Résumé :
No work of Cyril devoted to exclusively Adam’s sin was preserved. Though in entire of his exegetical and pastoral production repeatedly this theme which one of patterns of his theology constitutes appears. According to Cyryl, Satan caused with jealousy took the man to the sin hitting the emotional sphere in order after all to take the man for falsifying the intellect. Tempting which consists in showing pleasure, is a modus operandi of the Satan which having an influence on an affective sphere after all he causes that the logic of this sphere is winning the logic of the intellectual sphere and a superiority in action is taking over making the man – animal rationale – less rationale, and more animale. This concept is dismissing Cyril oneself for Philo’s research, according to which for the figure in telling about the first sin they are symbolizing Adam and Eve’s two hierarchized spheres of one man: appropriately the intellectual sphere and the affective sphere. In his deliberations about the sin of the first parents Cyril also refers to elements of the biblical description (Genesis 1-3), so as: the heavenly commandment, the tree of getting to know the good and evil and its fruit. Cyril is reflecting also about the phenomenon of the snake and the issue of the woman, which created in order to be a help for the man, showed herself to be – how Cyril is describing her – with „intermediary of the sin”. The Alexandrian is also giving some thought to the inborn knowledge of the first people and the concept acquaintances of the good and evil. As the being and relevant aspects of the sin of the first people Cyril – referring to the Pauline tradition – is listing the insubordination, disregarding, the betrayal of the Holy Spirit, the lack of the circumspection, the exaggerated love of the body or exaggerated cherishing pleasure. Cyril – what was indicated in the article – very much willingly is using the metaphor of Egypt (Exodus), seeing, the symbol of the sin in it particularly in the days of patriarchs, of particularly Adam’s sin.

Kovaleva, T. I. « The Story about the Vision of Cyril Belozersky in the North Russian Lives of the Monasteries’ Founders : The Lives of Cyril Belozersky and Alexander Svirsky ». Studies in Theory of Literary Plot and Narratology 15, no 1 (2020) : 5–22. http://dx.doi.org/10.25205/2410-7883-2020-1-5-22.

Résumé :
The story about the vision of Cyril Belozersky is the first description of the Virgin’s appearance, indicating the place of the monastery’s foundation, in Russian hagiography. The text of this story is read in the North Russian Lives of the monasteries’ founders: Therapont Belozersky’s, Alexander Svirsky’s, Ephraim of Perekom’s, Cyril Novoezersky’s, Philip of Irap’s. From our point of view, there is a process of mastering by hagiographers the episode of the vision from the Life of Cyril Belozersky as a literary device for constructing the situation of the ascetic’s religious retreat in the listed monuments. In them the story of the vision is introduced by the authors in the narrative when the title character for some reason cannot make religious retreat, and this vision helps him to achieve what he wants. There is a similar plot schemes in these Lives, but the borrowed episode is used differently by their authors. They use it in accordance with the characteristics of the ascetic’s holiness. From this point of view, we have already examined the using of the plot fragment from the Life of Cyril Belozersky in the Life of Therapont Belozersky. The author of Therapont’s Life introduces Cyril and almost literally replicates description of the saint’s religious retreat from his Life without making Therapont the visionary. The story about the vision of Cyril Belozersky in the Life of Alexander Svirsky is used otherwise. In this article the analysis episodes of Cyril and Alexander’s religious retreat reveals the role of a similar story in the concept of two different Lives. In the Cyril’s biography, the observed vision marks the stage of the ascetic’s transition to the foundation of the monastery. This is the main achievement of Cyril. In the Life of Alexander, a similar story marks only one stage of the ascetic’s spiritual path. Alexander, like Cyril, became the founder of the monastery. But above all, he is known as the visionary of the Holy Trinity. This vision is the most significant in the concept of his Life. The most important stories of the visions in the Cyril and Alexander’s Lives had influenced the iconography of the saints becoming the basis for popular iconographic versions of compositions “The Apparition of the Virgin to Cyril Belozersky” and “The Apparition of the Holy Trinity to Alexander Svirsky”.

Shchukin, Timur A. « Severus of Antioch and Cyril of Alexandria : The question of the continuity of logical and ontological conceptual structure ». Issues of Theology 4, no 4 (2022) : 566–84. http://dx.doi.org/10.21638/spbu28.2022.401.

Résumé :
The paper is devoted to the transformation of the structure of the logical-ontological concepts of the doctrine of Cyril of Alexandria in the treatise of Severus of Antioch “Against the wicked Grammarian”. The question is raised about the sources of Severus’ teaching about the general and particular and the hypothesis is put forward about the existence of such a teaching in Cyril of Alexandria. A selective comparison of the quotations from Cyril of Alexandria quoted by Severus of Antioch and the interpretations of the data proposed by Severus is carried out. On the basis of this, five points are proposed in which, as Sevier believed, he follows the bishop of Alexandria. It is concluded that the key problematic point, according to which Severus could not clearly demonstrate his dependence on Cyril of Alexandria, is the interpretation of the concepts of “genus” and “species” in relation to the common (deity and humanity). The analysis of those passages from the writings of Cyril of Alexandria, in which both of these terms are used, is carried out. It is concluded that for Cyril of Alexandria, “genus and species” were a formula for describing an undifferentiated common, and even where genus and species are opposed, “genus” corresponds to an undifferentiated common, and “species” practically coincides with hypostasis. On this basis, the conclusion is made about the continuity of the logical-ontological model of Cyril of Alexandria in the works of Severus of Antioch, which, however, does not mean the continuity of the Christological model.

Résumé :
The paper deals with problems of the development of the Episcopate under one of the greatest person of the Alexandrian Church - Cyril of Alexandria. The paper analyzes the Historia Ecclesiastica by Socrates Scholasticus, the works of Eusebius Caesarea and John of Nikiu, that outlines the key issues of the establishment of power relations in the Alexandrian Episcopate in IV-V centuries. The research has shown that the Cyrils inauguration was prompted by the practice of continuity, which was developed in the Church Hierarchy, beginning with Athanasius of Alexandria, when power was handed down from uncle to nephew. After following his uncle Theophilus of Alexandria in a position by descent Cyril of Alexandria faced a number of important issues that needed quick response and significant resources: a power struggle with his rival Archdeacon Timotheus, continuing the practice of getting rid of heresy in the Nicene Christianity, and a need to establish a unified intellectual Christian environment. To solve these tasks was possible by a mass of public support as well as by using military force of the commander of the Emperors troops. The paper also emphasizes an escalating confrontation between the Alexandrian Bishop, followers of Novatian and a large Jewish community.

Résumé :
This article examines the process of organizing the Cyril and Methodius society of devotees of faith, enlightenment and morality in the spirit of the Holy Orthodox Church in the Astrakhan governorate at the end of the XIX century. The border regions of the country, to which the Astrakhan governorate belonged, were distinguished by confessional heterogeneity. In the region beginning from the XVII century, a significant percentage of the population was made by Old Believers, schismatics, sectarians of various kinds appeared here. Such a state in the region persisted in the XIX century, which was overlaid by new trends in the secularization of society, the spread of atheistic ideas. The intensification of schismatic and sectarian movements in the second half of the XIX century required expanding and deepening the missionary activity on the part of the Russian Orthodox Church in the Astrakhan governorate. For this purpose, the Brotherhood of Saints Cyril and Methodius was established in the region, officially called the “Astrakhan Cyril and Methodius society of devotees of faith, enlightenment and morality in the spirit of the Holy Orthodox Church”. The main purpose of the presented research is a retrospective and problem-chronological analysis of the main stages in the formation of the Brotherhood of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Astrakhan governorate at the end of the XIX century. Materials and methods. Based on the analysis of the reports of Cyril and Methodius society of devotees of faith, enlightenment and morality in the spirit of the Holy Orthodox Church and the diocesan papers using historical-genetic, retrospective, problem-chronological methods, the main institutionalisation stages of Cyril and Methodius Society, created to help the diocese for missionary work in the region, are considered. Study results. Based on the analysis of the source materials in the periodical press and accounting documents, the main milestones in institutionalisation of Cyril and Methodius society of devotees of faith, enlightenment and morality in the spirit of the Holy Orthodox Church at the end of the XIX century in the Astrakhan governorate are investigated. The main reasons and factors that predetermined the need to create the Orthodox Brotherhood are considered, among which the prevalence of Molokanism teachings, schismatics and various religious sects in the Astrakhan Region was predominant. The need to activate the missionary activity of the Russian Orthodox Church in the region for the Orthodox-Christian education of local residents is emphasized. The first steps in the formation of Cyril and Methodius Brotherhood are considered, starting with the opening of a Brotherhood for conducting missionary conversations with Molokans in the town of Tsarev in Astrakhan governorate, the center of concentration of Molokans. The activity of Astrakhan Holy Trinity Brotherhood at the cathedral as an intermediate link in the formation of Cyril and Methodius Brotherhood is studied. The factors of the growth of the Trinity Brotherhood into an organized structure of Cyril and Methodius society of devotees of faith, enlightenment and morality in the spirit of the Holy Orthodox Church are analyzed. Conclusion. Having passed through several stages of its evolvement, Astrakhan Cyril and Methodius Society became an organized socio-Orthodox structure to help the diocese in missionary activities.

Résumé :
Abstract Cyril of Alexandria was a prolific biblical commentator who underscored the meaning and relevance of the Old Testament for Christian theology by employing a typological method of interpretation. His exegetical concern was to demonstrate that everything associated with the old covenant- people, events, commandments, institutions-were types and shadows foretelling the ‘mystery of Christ’. The key to understanding the types of the Old Testament is to recognize their soteriological fulfillment in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Throughout his exegetical writings, Cyril draws particular attention to the Jewish rite of circumcision, showing how the physical operation signifies the saving work of Christ through the Spirit. Cyril does not interpret circumcision in a monolithic sense, but derives multiple soteriological meanings from it. Insofar as circumcision represents a variety of saving realities for Cyril, it helps us understand his complex, multi-faceted doctrine of salvation.

Résumé :
In the early fifth century, both Cyril of Alexandria and Augustine of Hippo used Eusebius of Caesarea's Chronicle in the writing of their respective apologetic treatises – Against Julian for Cyril and The city of God for Augustine. The present study compares the use that these two authors made of their predecessor and argues for two continuities between these acts of reception: the use of synchronisms between biblical and non-biblical history and the tracing of Mosaic monotheism through time. In both these respects, Cyril and Augustine were carrying forward themes of Christian apologetic that reached back to the second-century apologists.
