Howes, Siobhan E. « Key stakeholders and their perceptions of the current position and viability of independent prep schools ? » Thesis, University of York, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/11419/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The current educational position and viability of the standalone preparatory (prep) school in England is examined through the perceptions of three sets of key stakeholders: parents, prep Heads, and senior school Heads. This type of school has been in existence for centuries and today forms a unique part of the independent education sector, but it is believed to be under threat due to declining numbers and school closures. The research used purposive and convenience sampling to identify case studies and face-to-face interviews were conducted with the key stakeholders. The case studies were selected from the Greater London area (deemed urban) and the Rest of England (deemed rural). Parents and Heads from eight prep schools and six senior schools were interviewed. The key stakeholders expressed their views with regard to the benefits (or otherwise) of prep schools and the pupils educated in them, the clients and the competition of such establishments. The study examines the issues currently facing the prep school as identified by the key stakeholders and considers whether these issues pose a potential threat to the sector’s viability. These risks are also considered in comparison to some broader trends affecting the education market in general. The research highlighted a large number of similarities across stakeholder views across geographical locations and noted the emergence of a new type of client. A second strand to the London market was identified which had a different purpose behind their choosing of a prep school. While no single threat is likely to be fatal to the prep school, a number of threats have appeared which, in combination risk a long, slow demise of this type of school. Although pupil numbers have plateaued over recent years, the emergence of the new customer, together with a willingness to adapt and to address at least some of the threats being faced, could be enough to ensure the survival of prep schools. However evidence of tension between education and the market was evident and could in itself impact on such a school.

Résumé :
Within Australia, Vocational Education and Training (VET) encompasses the Technical and Further Education (TAFE) sector, private providers, community education and training, and work-based training. Additionally, some VET activities are embedded within the secondary school and university sectors. As the major provider of Government-funded vocational education and training, TAFE has undergone significant change since its establishment in the 1970's. Historically, TAFE has provided broader education and social opportunities for individuals beyond a narrower focus on the achievement of training outcomes for economic benefits. However, shifts in policy direction in 1980's and 1990's have seen the delineation between broader education and economic outcomes becoming less distinct. While this is perhaps true of all education sectors, it has potentially impacted more on TAFE than any other sector. This thesis investigated these impacts within the context of TAFE's social service and economic utility roles. This was undertaken by analysing seven seminal Commonwealth and Queensland documents and by analysing the findings of interviews with six senior executives within Queensland's Department of Employment and Training and TAFE. The key findings of this thesis indicate that TAFE Queensland continues to perform a number of functions or activities that can be associated with a social service role. However, the findings also indicate that, for TAFE Queensland, there has been a shift towards an economic utility role. Since the Kangan Report (1974), TAFE's role has become more focussed on meeting Queensland's economic and industry needs within a broad view that Australia needs a flexible workforce, qualified to industry standards of competence and able to compete in a globalised world.

Ha, Keunsoo. « Position Estimation in Switched Reluctance Motor Drives Using the First Switching Harmonics of Phase Voltage and Current ». Diss., Virginia Tech, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/28296.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Position estimation using only active phase voltage and current is presented to perform high accuracy position sensorless control of a SRM drive. By extracting the amplitude of the first switching harmonic terms of phase voltage and current for a PWM period through Fourier analysis, flux-linkage and position are estimated without external hardware circuitry such as a modulator and demodulator, resulting in increasing cost, as well as large position estimation error produced when the motional back emf is ignored near zero speed. Hence the proposed position estimation scheme covers the entire speed range including the standstill under various loads and it has high resolution information depending on switching frequency. Fourier series and Fast Fourier transform are employed to decompose the phase voltage and current into its first switching harmonic. A two-phase SRM drive system, consisting of an asymmetrical converter and a conventional closed-loop PI current controller, is utilized to validate the performance of the proposed position estimation scheme in comprehensive operating conditions. The estimated values very closely track the actual values in dynamic simulations and experiments. It is shown that the proposed position estimation scheme using Fourier analysis is sufficiently accurate and works satisfactorily at various operating points. This research also proposes an accurate self-inductance measurement method. In general, when applying circulating currents within the body of a ferromagnetic material under conditions of a time varying magnetic flux, the effects of eddy current losses and resistance changes due to heating decrease the magnetic field strength and thereby the reduced magnetic field decreases the magnetic flux-linkage of SRM. These losses make a challenge to the measurement of magnetic characteristics of SRM. These motives lead to propose a measurement methodology based on 60 Hz sinusoidal excitation using a variable AC power supply, which provides an alternative to time domain integration approaches for self-inductance or flux-linkage measurement as well as eliminates error arising from thermal and eddy currents effects. The validation of the proposed method is verified with the correlation between the measurement and FEA results of flux-linkage. Furthermore, this research proposes the solutions for low cost and high efficiency drive systems, consisting of a split AC converter and a two-phase SRM. Its performance is analyzed and verified with experiments at the rated speed under various loads. It is believed that this drive system combined with the proposed position estimation scheme using Fourier analysis is a strong contender to be a low cost motor drive system with single switch per phase having comparable efficiency and acoustic noise level as an asymmetric drive system.

Résumé :
In order to provide the means to set up a control theory lab experiment involving position control of a brushed DC motor with current feedback, a pulse-width modulated motor controller was designed. The output voltage is controlled by an analog reference signal and the magnitude of the output current and voltage are measured and output. These inputs and outputs are connected to a DAQ I/O-unit such that the lab experiment can be implemented digitally. In addition, defining equations for the whole system were derived. Comparison between measurements and model showed it possible to use the current as feedback if low-pass filtered and the angular displacement controlled over a small angular interval.

Résumé :
In this thesis, position and current control systems for a brushless DC (Direct Current) motor are designed and integrated into one FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) chip. Experimental results are obtained by driving the brushless DC motors of Control Actuation System of a guided missile. Because of their high performance, brushless DC motors are widely used in Control Actuation Systems of guided missiles. In order to control the motor torque, current controller is designed and implemented in the FPGA. Position controller is designed to fulfill the position commands. A soft processor in the FPGA is used to connect and configure the current controller, position sensor interfaces and communication modules such as UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter) and Spacewire. In addition
position controller is implemented in the soft processor in the FPGA. An FPGA based electronic board is designed and manufactured to implement control algorithms, power converter circuitry and to perform other tasks such as communication with PC (Personal Computer). In order to monitor the behavior of the controllers in real time and to achieve performance tests, a graphical user interface is provided.

Résumé :
A new method for determining the entry point of gamma-rays in closed ended HPGe detectors has been developed. Exploiting the position dependence shown by the current pulses generated when a gamma-ray interacts with the detector, it is possible to electronically divide the crystal in the radial coordinate and thus increase the effective granularity of the detector. Position resolution is particularly important for correcting the Doppler peak broadening observed in many in-beam gamma-spectroscopy experiments. Position resolution within coaxial crystals is accomplished by combining the angular information gained by segmenting the outer contact with the determination of the event radius by current pulse shape analysis. With increasing gamma-energy, more than one interaction is in general required to completely stop a gamma-ray in a germanium detector. The concept of a main interaction, defined as that depositing the largest fraction of the original gamma-energy, is introduced and seen to be the dominant contribution to the event current pulses. A Monte Carlo simulation for the positions and energies of the interactions in an event has been performed in order to establish the physical limits for the position resolution that can be measured in a segmented CLUSTER module. A varying fraction of events, from 55% at a gamma-energy of 400 keV to 85% at 1800 keV, have their main interaction within 5 mm from the entry point. The position of the main interaction can therefore be successfully used to measure the entry position of the gamma-ray in the detector. In order to provide high quality charge/energy and current outputs from the detector signal, a new preamplifier for large volume HPGe detectors has been developed. The intrinsic equivalent noise contribution from the preamplifier was measured at 0.65 keV + 35 eV /pF. The measured energy resolution when the input FET is operated at cryogenic temperature is 2.30 keV at 1333 keV with 3 μs shaping time. Using this preamplifier and the first prototype of a two-fold segmented CLUSTER module, a radial resolution of ±4mm has been measured with the new method both at 662 and 1333 keV. The method can be incorporated into an analogue electronic circuit and is therefore directly applicable in in-beam gamma-spectroscopy experiments.

Résumé :
Over the last years, electrical roads have emerged as a cost effective and environmentally friendly solution towards a transportation system with less dependency on fossil fuels. This thesis presents the design of a search and locate system for road-bound conductive electrical roads with position control in two axes. The system is intended to find and follow the position of an electrified rail. The actuator system constitutes a firm groundwork for further research and development in this field. A laboratory test set up has been designed and both hardware and software parts have been constructed. The control of the system uses the CompactRIOTM technology from National Instruments. Results from the practical evaluation suggest that the non-linear characteristic of the system and the lack of direct position feedback from the motor rotation are the main causes of a non-accurate position control. Future development steps should focus on improving the mechanical design and include encoder feedback for the control loop as well as absolute automatic control with the incorporation of rail sensors.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The thesis covers the field of the contract law known as the consumer credit law. It deals with the legal protection afforded to the consumer under current South African law with emphasis on the legal position in specific credit agreements contained in standard-form contracts. The thesis focuses on those credit contracts in which the legal relationship between the consumer and the dominant party is contained in the standard-form contracts, specifically credit agreements relating to money lending transactions in which the credit grantor’s rights are secured either by means of mortgage agreement, a suretyship contract, or a deed of cession. In South Africa the right to equality and human dignity, as opposed to the classical theories of contract: pacta sunt servanda and the principle of freedom of contract, are supported by the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa Act 108 of 1996 which entrenched democratic values permeating all areas of the law including contract law. In this thesis the harmonisation of these classical theories of contract law and the constitutional values of human dignity and equality have been considered. As has been shown in a number of cases, notably those relating to the contracts of suretyship, cession in securitatem debiti, and mortgage, the current law regulating the relationship between the credit grantors and the credit receivers is in need of law reform to fall in line with the constitutional values of equality and human dignity. The greatest difficulty inherent in this area of the law is the reluctance of the courts to intervene at the instance of consumers. The courts would only intervene in the clearest of the cases, and would only do so in the public interest. In this thesis the current South African Law is considered in the light of the developments elsewhere. The tendency of credit providers to alter the terms of the contracts unilaterally and the growing number of conflicting decisions of the Provincial Divisions of High Court has also been considered. The writer also considers the role of the newly created Consumer Affairs Court.

Résumé :
As the world moves towards a cleaner and greener future, electrical machines for various industrial purposes and transport applications have gained a lot of attention. Permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) are usually the solution for electric vehicle (EV) applications thanks to their high efficiency, compactness and high-power density. On the downside, although the price of rare-earth materials has recovered close to historical levels, concerns still remain and the questions on the environmental sustainability of these materials have also been raised, which has encouraged the researchers to consider rare-earth-free machines. The switched reluctance machine (SRM) is one of the competitive alternatives, thanks to the simple and robust construction, high reliability and inherent fault tolerance capability. However, it has a bad reputation when it comes to torque ripple and acoustic noise. And the highly nonlinear characteristic brings much difficulty to routine design purposes and machine optimisation. Therefore, some of the above mentioned problems are addressed - a torque-ripple-reduction, reliable and low-cost system of SRMs is presented in this thesis. Firstly from the modelling point of view, a combined magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) and finite element (FE) model of SRMs is developed for fast characterization the nonlinear behavior. Secondly from the control point of view, various torque-ripple reduction techniques are implemented and compared. Moreover, a minimal current sensing strategy with enhanced fault-detection capability is proposed and validated experimentally. It requires two current sensors, to replace the phase current sensors, with no additional devices for fault detection, to achieve a more compact and low-cost drive. Finally from the reliability point of view, an interturn short-circuit fault detection method and a rotor position estimation approach are investigated and validated experimentally, which leads to a more reliable system.

Résumé :
This dissertation is concerned with extensions and wedge products of positive currents. Our study can be considered as a generalization for classical works done earlier in this field. Paper I deals with the extension of positive currents across different types of sets. For closed complete pluripolar obstacles, we show the existence of such extensions. To do so, further Hausdorff dimension conditions are required. Moreover, we study the case when these obstacles are zero sets of strictly k-convex functions. In Paper II, we discuss the wedge product of positive pluriharmonic (resp. plurisubharmonic) current of bidimension (p,p) with the Monge-Ampère operator of plurisubharmonic function. In the first part of the paper, we define this product when the locus points of the plurisubharmonic function are located in a (2p-2)-dimensional closed set (resp. (2p-4)-dimensional sets), in the sense of Hartogs. The second part treats the case when these locus points are contained in a compact complete pluripolar sets and p≥2 (resp. p≥3). Paper III studies the extendability of negative S-plurisubharmonic current of bidimension (p,p) across a (2p-2)-dimensional closed set. Using only the positivity of S, we show that such extensions exist in the case when these obstacles are complete pluripolar, as well as zero sets of C2-plurisubharmoinc functions.

Résumé :

With the possibility of connecting several computers and networks the necessity of protecting the whole data and machines from attackers (hackers) that try to get some confident information to use for their own benefit or just destroy or modify valuable information was born. At this point IDS appears to help users, companies or institutions to detect when they are getting compromised. This thesis will cover two main parts: the first one consists of an intense research study about the world of IDS and its environment. Subsequently, we will conclude this part with some points where IDS still needs to be questioned and show up desirable requirements for “the perfect” intrusion detection system. This “perfect” adjective can of course be discussed variously. The second part of the thesis approaches the implementation of the most used open source IDS: Snort. Some basic attacks on the machine where Snort is installed will be performed in order to make the future user see what kind of protection it ensures and the usability of this. There is a brief discussion about two of the main challenges in IDS will follow: analyzing big amounts of packets and encrypted traffic. Finally there are conclusions for a safe computer environment as well as the suggestion that some skilled programmer should give Snort a more friendly interface for every kind of users and a built in programme package which includes webserver, database and other libraries that are needed to run it properly with all its features.

Résumé :
This thesis presents an alternative method for measuring the rotor position of a synchronousgenerator, without the use of sensors to measure the rotor position. The method uses thecurrent and voltage measurements on the stator and rotor terminals from the protectionrelays. The rst step is to investigate how the rotor position can be estimated basedon the available measurement data. It was found out that the rotor position couldn'tbe estimated during dynamic state operation, when directly solving it from measurementdata. This is due to the presence of the eld and d-axis damper winding current dynamics, including the q-axis damper winding current. In order to achieve this, multiple stepsconsisting of dierent methods for estimating the rotor position were utilized. The rststep is to estimate the rotor position during steady state. The second step estimates therotor position iteratively based on initial values. This method is useful during a dynamicstate operation. The initial values are obtained from the rst step at the start of a dynamicstate operation. The nal step predicts the rotor position based on previous data. It isused during cases when the second step fails to estimate the rotor position accurately.Due to insucient data for estimating the rotor position during saturation, the eects ofsaturation for the simulated synchronous machine were not considered.

The development of closed loop controls for electrical drives requires the sensor installations in order to get feed back information. Nevertheless, any occurred sensor fault (current sensor,speed/position sensor,…) shows an operation system deterioration which leads in most cases to its shut down. This consequence is in contrast to industrial expectations especially concerning the system high accuracy that they are asking for. Statistic studies point out the sensor faults as frequent. So, it is necessary to find out solutions ensuring the system service continuity in case of any sensor fault. Firstly, the study presented in this work shows the used sensor technologies in order to understand both of the reason and the kind of occurred faults. Secondly, the studied system is presented which is an electrical drive based on a Doubly Fed Induction Machine (DFIM) operating in motor mode and connected to the grid by two inverters. The control developed is a Direct Torque Control (DTC). The control validation, in healthy operating mode, is realised throw simulation and experimentally. After, a study considering alternative current sensor and speed/position sensor faults are achieved. The developed algorithms are based on signal estimation, on a Fault Detection Isolation (FDI) and reconfiguration algorithms. In fact, they are simple to carry out, they don't need much hardware resources for implementation and their execution time is short. Finally, the experimental validation of the developed algorithms shows their efficiency. The system continues working even in presence of a sensor fault. Thus, the obtained control becomes a fault tolerant control thanks to these algorithms

Fiala, J. « Investigation of space charge neutralization effects in high-current positive ion beams ». Thesis, University of Salford, 2008. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/26675/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Through the experience gained during the industrial development of low energy implanters, it is commonly believed that improvements in forced space-charge neutralization are responsible for the maintenance of high currents down to an energy of about 3 keV. However, despite major improvements in plasma flood neutralizer design, drift mode currents below this energy are still too low to have the same performance as obtained in accel/decel (A/D) mode. It has become clear that neither the nature of neutralization process nor the role of the "so called" beam plasma that is created in the beam environment are fully understood. The work presented was carried out on the PLUTO ion implanter beamline at the University of Salford fitted with a high density (HD) plasma flood source (PFS). The beam and flood plasmas were studied independently prior to the investigation of the coupled system. Langmuir probe measurements have been carried out on 1-10 keV Ar + beams at the wafer position in the PLUTO machine, which is a specially adapted version of a commercial ion implanter (Applied Materials xR LEAP). The main parameters of the beam plasmas, electron and ion densities, electron temperatures, and plasma and floating potentials have been measured as functions of beam energy, beam current, beam-line pressure and beam tuning settings. It has been found that in common with the plasmas in ion source and plasma flood plasmas, the electrons in the beam plasma are characterized by two temperatures. All plasma parameters depend critically on the details of the tuning parameters and the beamline pressure. The PFS plasma using mainly Xe was studied and the two operational modes (A/D and BIAS) compared. The results from mass energy analyser suggest that the plasmas are very similar after correcting the plasma potentials for the different electrical setups. When the ion implanter and the PFS are operated simultaneously, the beam current transmitted to the wafer changes in a manner that depends on the operating conditions (ion beam current, PFS arc voltage, PFS arc current, PFS gas flow rates). This dependence is the strongest when the A/D mode is used, due to the presence of a positive potential close to the ion beam.

Keywords: life satisfaction, happiness, subjective well-being, current mood

Résumé :
We performed ab-initio Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations of a pulsar magnetosphere. We injected particles in two ways: everywhere and only near to the star surface. Then we study how the magnetosphere transitions from the vacuum to a nearly force-free configuration. We compare the injection from the surface force-free like configuration with ones obtained in a PIC simulation where particles are injected everywhere as well as with macroscopic force-free simulations. We found that although both PIC solutions have similar structure of electromagnetic fields and current density distributions, they have different particle density distribution. In fact in the injection from the surface solution, electrons and positrons counterstream only along parts of the return current regions and most of the particles leave the magnetosphere without returning to the star. We also found that pair production in the outer magnetosphere is not critical for filling the whole magnetosphere with plasma. We study how the current density distribution supporting the global electromagnetic configuration is formed by analyzing particle trajectories. We found that electrons precipitate to the return current layer inside the light cylinder and positrons precipitate to the current sheet outside the light cylinder by crossing magnetic field lines contributing to the charge density distribution required by the global electrodynamics. Moreover, there is a population of electrons trapped in the region close to the Y-point. On the other hand the most energetic positrons are accelerated close to the Y-point. These processes can have observational signatures that, with further modeling efforts, would help to distinguish this particular magnetosphere configuration from others.

Foley, Brian M. « A System for Detecting the Position of a Molten Aluminum Metal-Front within a Precision Sand Mold ». Digital WPI, 2009. https://digitalcommons.wpi.edu/etd-theses/50.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Manufacturers of cast metal parts are interested in the development of a feedback control system for use with the Precision Sand-Casting (PSC) process. As industry demands the ability to cast more complex geometries, there are a variety of challenges that engineers have to address. Certain characteristics of the mold, such as thick-to-thin transitions, extensive horizontal or flat surfaces, and sharp corners increase the likelihood of generating defective casts due to the turbulent metal-flow during fills. Consequently, it is critical that turbulent flow behavior within the mold be minimized as much as possible. One way to enhance the quality of the fill process is to adjust the flow rate of the molten metal as it fills these critical regions of the mold. Existing systems attempt to predict the position of the metal level based on elapsed time from the beginning of the fill stage. Unfortunately, variability in several aspects of the fill process makes it very difficult to consistently predict the position of the metal front. A better approach would be to embed a sensor that can detect the melt through a lift-off distance and determine the position of the metal-front. The information from this sensor can then be used to adjust the flow rate of the aluminum as the mold is filled. This thesis presents the design of a novel non-invasive sensor monitoring system. When deployed on the factory floor, the sensing system will provide all necessary information to allow process engineers to adjust the metal flow-rate within the mold and thereby reduce the amount of scrap being produced. Moreover, the system will exhibit additional value in the research and development of future mold designs.

Résumé :
The purpose of this study was to determine the implementation status of School-wide Positive Behavior Supports (SWPBS) in selected elementary and middle schools (N = 123) situated within three regions of Virginia. Additionally this study sought to identify and determine the relative impact of specific facilitators and barriers to successful implementation. Finally, this study identified the types of professional development opportunities related to SWPBS available to school personnel. In order to answer each overarching research question, participants were asked to complete the School-wide Positive Behavior Support Systems Implementation Survey, a validated instrument, adapted from the Delaware PBS Implementation Self Assessment. Findings indicate above average levels of implementation on 35 of 36 specific features of SWPBS. Additional findings reveal significant levels of impact related to specific facilitators and barriers on identified critical feature categories of SWPBS. Finally, with regard to professional development, results indicate that a majority of schools offer more than one type of professional development opportunity to school personnel and that most schools use new teacher orientation programs to provide in-service for SWPBS.

Executive discretion, the latitude for executives strategic decisions, is a powerful moderator of strategic decision making. In spite of its potential contribution to strategic management studies, Hambrick and Finkelstein's (1987) socio-political model of executive discretion has received little empirical research effort. Some of the basic propositions of the model, which incorporates industry, firm and individual characteristics as determinants of discretion have not been empirically tested. The restricted research effort is partly attributable to the lack of quantitative measures for industry-level discretion. This thesis initially uses the correlation between industry-level attentional homogeneity, the similarity in foci of attention of executives in an industry, and industry-level discretion to produce 116 new values for industry-level discretion for 23 U.S. 4-digit SIC coded industries for the years 1990 to1997. Predictive validity for the new values is demonstrated using long-term debt data and annual accounts adjustment data. Theil's (1992b) industry variety measure based on information theory is modified to produce strategic variety measures that permit pan-industry comparisons. Strong support is demonstrated for a positive association between variety in long-term strategic positions and industry-level discretion. Some weak evidence suggesting large firms in low discretion industries may compete using behaviours that impact on current accounts is also identified.

Résumé :
This thesis presents measurements of charged current deep inelastic scattering cross sections in e+p collisions with longitudinally polarised positron beams. The measurements are based on data taken by the ZEUS detector at the HERA collider during the 2006-2007 run- ning period. The data sample has an integrated luminosity of 132 pb-1 and was taken at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeY. The total cross section has been measured at positive and negative values of the longitu- dinal polarisation of the positron beam (Pe). In addition, the single differential cross sections dδ / dQ2, dδ / dx and dδ / dy have been measured for Q2 > 200 Ge y2, also using both positively and negatively polarised positron beams. The reduced cross section has been measured in nine bins of Q2 in the kinematic range 280 < Q2 < 30000 Gey2 and 0.0078 < x < 0.42. The results are compared against the descriptions provided by the CTEQ6.6, MSTW 2008, HEARPDF1.0 and ZEUS-JETS PDFs. In general, the measured cross sections are well described by these predictions. Based on the measurement of the total cross section as a function of the polarisation of the positron beam, a lower limit on the mass of a hypothetical right-handed W boson has been extracted from the upper limit of the cross-section at Pe = -1. This limit is complementary to the limits obtained from direct searches (for example at CDF and D0) because the limit presented herein is for a space-like vV, whereas for direct searches, the limit on the mass of a time-like W boson is obtained. The results of this analysis have been published and have been included ill the determination of the HERAPDF theoretical prediction and also in HI and ZEUS combined results.

Résumé :

The problem for women in the work market has been and is still being widely studied from different domains and fields, there is however still countless fissures linked to it. Even though the gender equality has comprehensively increased in recent decades, it is still apparent in high responsibility positions. This situation caught our attention and stimulated us to analyse the women’s condition within organizations.

Scholars have developed different theories linked to organizations, but our complex and fast developing society has surpassed most of these classical theories, making them either partially or totally irrelevant. For instance standards such as hierarchical organizations, individualism and aggressiveness are no longer considered as the most efficient values.

This work investigates the barriers that women have to overcome in order to break though leading positions, as well as the identification of female and male leadership and their stereotypes’ consequences. Accordingly, we intend to propose solutions and new approaches liable to help integrating more women in high profile positions. We are aspiring to create a new trend representing successful leadership that is no longer correlated to the male stereotype.

The theoretical part engages in theories surrounding female gender leadership as well as gender related barriers, while the empirical method involves the conduction of semi structured interview with women in high management positions, with the aim of setting up a solid ground for analysis and discussion. Due to this fact, we believe that the woman is the future of the organization, therefore we firstly call for the implementation and the reinforcement of the female “role model” and secondly encourage companies to adopt and promote our new concept of “the ecological organization” in order to achieve a more flexible, balanced and sane organizational culture in a foreseeable future.

Résumé :
This qualitative case study was designed to determine the perceptions about female leadership among female faculty and administrators at East Tennessee State University. Participants were asked about the motivating and prohibiting factors (barriers) that affected their leadership capabilities at the institution. They cited motivating factors that led them to optimal performance. These included family support, mentoring practices, affirmative action, collegial working atmosphere, support from the top leadership, and encouragement from their colleagues. The dissertation was also to investigate how female leaders perceived their leadership roles and the factors that enhanced female leadership and the barriers that hindered female leadership at ETSU. The women in this study talked about the impediments or barriers of their upward movement. These included salaries that were lower than those of their male colleagues, stereotyped thinking within the community with biases against females, family chores vis-à-vis work schedules, sexual discrimination, lack of role models, etc. The findings were: (a) Female leadership was uniquely relationship-oriented; (b) female leaders combined work and family and managed the two fairly well; (c) female leaders were more likely to mentor other women but also were often mentored by men; (d) female leaders worked at a more relaxed pace with details in mind and did not have the target of the big picture as a priority; (e) they worked hard to attain the positions previously held by men and are now at par in higher positions both in faculty and administration; (f) they worked hard to surmount the barriers placed in their way as they moved up the ladder in faculty and administrative positions; (g) they volunteered for positions in the staff and faculty senates without considering financial gains; (h) they were the majority in the lower ranks of the administrative ladder of the university and played crucial supportive roles; and (i) their leadership styles were more humanitarian and on the relationship philosophy than were the leadership styles of their male counterparts.
