Ancient Patterns of the Sporting BodyIn the world of ancient culture you can find images of corporeality which may be recognised as patterns of the sporting body. They come from Greek sculpture and vase painting. Among the preserved Greek cultural artefacts there can be pointed out three examples of patterns of male corporeality and one example of female corporeality connected with the world of sport. These are Polyclitus's sculptures "Doryphorus" and "Diadoumenos", Myron's sculpture "Discus Thrower", Lysippus's sculpture of "Heracles Farnese" and painting presenting Atalanta. They constitute ancient patterns of the sporting body, which are recognisable in the world of the European culture from the age of Renaissance to the 20th century. Each of those cultural artefacts points out to separate aspects of the world of sport: Polyclitus's sculptures are pictures of beauty of the body, Myron's sculpture expresses sporting movement, Lysippus's sculpture symbolises power and the figure of Atalanta is the first gender pattern in the world of sport. Ancient patterns of the sporting body perform functions of cultural archetypes in the contemporary world of sport. The contemporary sporting body is a corporeal form which is perceived and interpreted through the prism of the symbolic layer of ancient images of corporeal forms. A part of those corporeal patters has lost in European culture their sporting references, which were visible for Greek civilization. It refers to Polyclitus's sculptures and the figure of Atalanta, which was provided by Renaissance and Baroque art with a different semantic context. Research into cultural aspects of sport requires reconstruction of their sporting genealogy making it possible to construct wider interpretative contexts of contemporary corporeality. The notion of the "archetype of the sporting body" in European culture is enriched with a differentiated objective layer, which is composed of ancient patters of the sporting body encountered in social consciousness of the world of European art.

In September of 1921, the government of Alvaro Obregóón organized a lavish commemoration of the centennial of Agustíín de Iturbide's ouster of Spanish authority and the creation of Mexico. The occasion gave the administration the opportunity to present its image of the revolutionary state and society within the context of historical memory and public policy. The official program promoted economic and social programs rooted in nineteenth-century liberalism, as well as a new cultural vision that portrayed contemporary indigenous culture as integral to Mexican national identity. The occasion also gave conservatives the opportunity to present a counternarrative of Mexican history in newspaper articles and editorials that championed Iturbide, the Catholic Church, and Mexico's Spanish heritage. The organization of cultural and sporting events also showcased traditional and popular culture.
Abstract A sporting spectacle is an important cultural event, essentially influencing social and individual lives. In spite of this, there does not yet exist a monograph that analyzes, describes, and explains sporting performance from the point of view of aleatorism as part of the theory of sport and physical culture. Unfortunately, no monograph has developed this issue in a multi-aspectual, holistic, culturological, and philosophical way, dealing with its axiological values (aesthetic and praxeological). This applies to the relations between this phenomenon and the mechanisms that bring about the development and growth of interest in the social dimension.Generally, the theory of aleatorism has been applied in analyzing the phenomena of physics, music, and theatrical spectacle. The one relatively well-developed theory of performance is that of theatre spectacle. The above does not mean that the author aims to appreciate a sporting performance due to its links with theatre. He points to one of many possible aspects of a sporting spectacle, which are the assumptions of an aleatory nature included in its structure, plan, and the tactics of the game.

Résumé :
This paper examines the figurational dynamics and cultural significance of the emergence of American football on the landscape of English sports culture. To do this, it is necessary to place this development within the context of the more general debate concerning the Americanization of British culture. It is also necessary to examine how such changes in sports culture are intertwined with broader cultural changes. The substantive section focuses on the network of interdependencies involved in the making of American football in England in the 1980s. Attention is paid to the crucial role played by the marketing strategies of the NFL, Anheuser-Busch, and a British television company in promoting the game of American football in English society. An attempt is made to highlight the interweaving of interests of media and multinational corporations in the creation of a market not simply for the game of American football but also for the merchandising, sponsorship, and endorsement operations associated with it. The paper concludes with a consideration of Americanization, sport, and cultural change.

Résumé :
Indigenous people are over-represented as professional players in many sporting codes, and recently a trend has developed whereby Indigenous athletes are choosing to play internationally for their heritage nations as opposed to the top-tier countries they reside in. With regard to rugby league and rugby union, many of these athletes are Pasifika who have had minimal exposure to their heritage nations, being born and raised in, for example, Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia or the United States. Nevertheless, this cohort is increasingly choosing to play for their heritage nations, despite the substantial cut in pay and available resources this decision entails. Throughout this commentary, these athletes are not viewed as mere individuals. Instead, we acknowledge their relationality—that is, the fact that they are intertwined in collective networks of family and nationhood. As researchers from the Pasifika community, we explore the factors which contribute to Pasifika athletes choosing to play for their heritage nations. By analysing the rise of Mate Ma‘a Tonga, Tonga’s national rugby league team, we aim to gain a deeper understanding of the cultural pride—the connection to family and heritage nation—that drives these athletes to play for this team, and the subsequent implications for wellbeing and performance.

As one of the important forms of intangible cultural heritage, heritage sporting events are becoming a potential catalyst of tourism. Commodification of heritage sporting events becomes popular for local authorities to boost economic development and express cultural authenticity, given that authenticity creates genuine performances and moving tourism experiences. However, commodification of heritage is a double-edged sword. It is a dilemma to commercialize a heritage sporting event while keeping its authenticity. Therefore, this study proposes a tourist-based model of authenticity to solve this problem, in which the authenticity of heritage sporting events incorporates “cool” and “hot” factors. The model examines these factors and their impact on tourist satisfaction and loyalty using Naadam as the example. Seven hundred questionnaires were distributed at six sites located from east to west of the Inner Mongolia, China. Factor analysis shows there are two factors in cool and hot authenticity, respectively. Both factors of cool authenticity have direct impacts on hot authenticity, satisfaction, and loyalty. Though both intrapersonal and interpersonal factors of hot authenticity have direct positive impacts on tourist satisfaction, only the former affects loyalty directly. The results show the authenticity of event culture is the most important and effective authentic factor, while authentic auxiliary products—the direct expression of commodification—is indispensable for authenticity. This study is helpful for maintaining authenticity and cultural sustainability of heritage sporting events as a destination tourism attraction, given the fact that commodification and the marketing of heritage sporting events has become popular for heritage destination development.

The knowledge of an English language is one of the crucial skills for any person in the field of sport. The multicultural diversity at international competitions and a large number of sports professionals working and competing worldwide created a bigger demand for a more adequate level of linguistic knowledge. Therefore, as a result of it, it is crucial to develop a model of learning English at the institutions of higher education where the focus will be on practicing the communication competence in the field of physical culture that would primarily be context based. This means that the learning environment and the curriculum should be organized in such a way that the students are placed in different situations where they will have real life simulations of the different situations in sport or training. The important part of this model would also be the cultural aspect of language learning which would contribute to the development of intercultural communicative competence.

Résumé :
Aleut baseball is a popular game played by the Sugpiat of Nanwalek and Port Graham on the lower Kenai Peninsula of Alaska. Despite its resemblance to American baseball and Russian lapta, Aleut baseball should be considered a Sugpiaq cultural novelty. Ranging from recreational to competitive, the game is a communal occasion, which often brings together Sugpiaq villages and communities. This article presents some of the profound elements that make Aleut baseball expressive of Sugpiaq culture, and a channel for renegotiating and re-energising established norms and values. Furthermore, looking at Aleut baseball through Victor Turner’s concept of play, the authors argue that sports and games provide immense opportunities for cultural innovation and experimentation, as well as for strengthening of group identity. Finally, the article explores the capacity of sports and games to link global perceptions with local realities.

This article is to reveal the intrinsic objectives and values of Bull Race culture. Basically, every culture must contain a purpose forecasted by the first initiator. Therefore, it tries to analyze the culture through Islamic Law by using the theories of ‘urf and maqâshid al-syarîah as the approach. The historical data shows that the intrinsic purpose of the culture is to create prosperity by increasing people’s income, especially in crop production. Besides, this culture also gives additional income to the cow’s livestock. As the result, Bull Race culture really gives great benefit to the society. The dry field becomes fertile and the crop production gets much more successfull. Furthermore, the income of cow also increases significantly because the local cows are healthy and fat with high quality meat. Meanwhile, the noble values from the Bull Race culture are: a. hard working, b. cooperative, c. competitive, d. discipline, e. sportive. Considering the intrinsic objectives and cultural values, it concludes that the culture of Bull Race is not contradictory with the Islamic rules. In fact, it is relevant with the maqasidh al-syari’ah providing that it neither hurts the animals (cows) nor contains gambling and any other immoralities. The purpose of this study was to explore what particular areas of organizational cultures facilitate the development and progression of women as football coaches and coach developers. The English Football Association provided the context for the research. Previous statistics demonstrate that recruitment, retention, and progression of women in English football coaching and tutoring are lower and slower than their male counterparts. In-depth interviews were completed with 26 women coaches and coach developers during November 2015 and February 2016 to understand their personal experiences as linked to the structure and culture of their sporting governing body, and analyzed using Schein’s theory of organizational culture. Three key tenets of organizational culture were found to be most influential on the career development of the participants: journeys and crossroads (the establishment of a learning culture), inclusive leadership, and vertical and horizontal relationships. The research demonstrates the need to identify disparities between espoused values and assumptions to enact cultural change toward supporting more women to be valued, included, and progressed in the sporting workplace.

Résumé :
The reorienting of Russian regionalism towards economic and socio-cultural competition between territories has made it relevant for them to have branding strategies. Saturating regions with various socio-political, economic, sporting and cultural events has become a key component of these strategies. This article analyzes the senses and meanings which they promote, representing one of Russia’s most active republics in this regard, the leading region in terms of implementing large-scale projects – the Republic of Tatarstan. Analysis of the international events held in this region from 2013 to 2019 revealed that the political senses which serve to establish the region’s status within the Russian nation are gradually fading into the background, with emphasis shifting towards integration. At the same time ideas are starting to emerge of the republic being an advanced, rapidly developing region, a center for modern technology and a Russian leader in terms of implementing innovative projects. Tatarstan also claims to be an intermediary in establishing partnership between the Russian Federation and nations of the Turkic and Islamic worlds. In turn, large-scale sporting events present the republic’s central city as Russia’s sporting capital, which facilitates the creation of a positive image for this region around the world while sustaining the international community’s interest. The senses produced by local cultural events help in building an ethno-confessional image for the republic, which is primarily built around the notion of a poly-ethnic and poly-confessional region which especially emphasizes parity of Tatar and Russian culture, Islam and Orthodoxy. The “center for the development of Tatar culture” formula, put forward in the 1990’s, also remains valid, with the region being a point towards which all Tatars gravitate, which allows for preserving their ethnic identity on the one hand, and articulating the region’s ethno-cultural distinctiveness – it being the foundation for developing its cultural economy – on the other. Analysis revealed that the elites conduct “strategies of inclusion” of various socio-cultural groups into the republican capital’s cultural life, as well as regional and urban activists into discussing and implementing plans for territorial development.

Résumé :
Abstract The study of sporting death is a neglected area of the history of sport. This paper, though drawing on English material, therefore has implications for American and other studies. It provides a broadly cultural analysis of the funeral processions, burials and public responses to the deaths of a small sample of top sportsmen in Victorian England in the second half of the nineteenth century, including the pugilist Tom Sayers (1826-1865), the sculler James Renforth (1842-1871), and champion jockey Fred Archer (1857-1886), all of whom competed successfully internationally. Drawing inter alia on London, provincial and foreign press material, and the symbolic language of the “rite of passage” to the grave, it explores the complex contradictions and differences between accounts and representations and the ways these helped to shape contemporary and later social attitudes to specific sports, sporting heroism, and sporting culture in Britain and abroad.

Résumé :
INTRODUCTION. The purpose of the article was to examine how two different regulatory entities - international sports law and lex sportiva - interact with each other in structural and functional terms. When characterizing the structural interaction, the author set herself the task of identifying the place of each of these normative complexes in the system of a larger whole. When analyzing functional interaction, the author viewed her task as considering the process in two aspects: static (delineation of the limits of regulatory influence) and dynamic (interference of regulatory efforts). As a result of studying the dynamic aspect of functional interaction, the techniques of incorporation, legitimation, and reference were characterized; the author gave the examples of the incorporation of the norms of the International standards adopted in addition to the World Anti-Doping Code into an international legal act - the 2005 UNESCO Convention against Doping in Sport, legitimation of the norms of the 2014 Council of Europe Convention against Manipulation of Sports Competitions through the adoption of the 2015 Code of the Olympic Movement on the Prevention of Manipulation of Competitions, and two types of reference: references to the World Anti-Doping Code in an international treaty - the 2005 UNESCO Convention against Doping in Sport of 2005 and references to international legal acts in the field of human rights in the FIFA Statutes (starting from 2016) and inthe FIFA Human Rights Policy of 2017. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The author listed the applicable international legal acts and acts of lex sportiva, studied the scientific works of leading representatives of domestic and foreign doctrine on such issues as the criteria for recognizing a specific branch of international law, the subject of regulation and the nature of transnational law, the interplay between international law and lex sportiva. Among the general scientific methods the author utilized substrate (substantive), structural and systemic approaches; comparative and hermeneutic approaches should be mentioned as the specific scientific methods used. RESEARCH RESULTS. As a result of the analysis of the structural interaction of the two regulatory orders, the author identified the place of international sports law in the system of international law and the place of lex sportiva in global law. When considering the static aspect of functional interaction based on the analysis of the content of the principle of autonomy of sport, a number of exclusive subjects of regulation by lex sportiva were identified. In the course of studying the dynamic aspect, the author characterized three types of transformation - the transfiguration of norms and their transition from one normative order to another - from the point of view of legal technique (incorporation, legitimation, reference). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS. In the author’s opinion, international sports law is a branch of public international law at the stage of its formation, and lex sportiva is an institution of transnational global law formed as a result of the activities of non-governmental actors. The study of the static aspect of the functional interaction between international sports law and lex sportiva indicates that the issues regulated by sports organizations in an autonomous manner include the establishment of rules for sports competitions, as well as issues of the internal life of sports organizations. The dynamics of transnational processes significantly expands the interaction between international sports law and lex sportiva and the transition (transformation) of norms from one regulatory complex to another in such areas as the fight against doping, countering the manipulation of sports competitions, introducing international legal standards in the field of human rights protection.

Résumé :
To date, there is little research focusing on the role of culture and Indigenous ways of knowing in Western science-dominated high performance sporting environments. This paper takes inspiration from the emerging field of Postcolonial Science Studies and feminist Indigenous scholars to explore how Aotearoa (New Zealand) Black Ferns Sevens players from Māori and Samoan descent make meaning of their bodies within Westernized high performance sporting spaces. Drawing upon a thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with 18 members of the Black Ferns Sevens squad, we illustrate how players navigate divergent cultural value systems within and across various aspects of the high performance sport environment, including training, nutrition, menstruation, and the everyday quantification of their bodies. This paper also reveals some of the important considerations, learnings, and vulnerabilities experienced during this cross-cultural research collaboration, and highlights the need for more research by/with/for Indigenous women in high performance sport environment.

Résumé :
Abstract Boxer Kid Chocolate was one of the most prominent and popular athletes in Cuba in the 1920s and 1930s. An analysis of his career and the reasons for his popularity in Cuba shed light on the cultural dimensions of U.S.-Cuban relations during this time. Appreciation of the career of Kid Chocolate in both the U.S. and Cuba suggests that Cubans and Americans shared a cultural world that centered on the appreciation of sport in general and was characterized by extensive Cuban consumption of North American sporting culture. But Cubans were not simply passive consumers of this culture. Instead they infused their own meaning into the career of Kid Chocolate, subtly invoking it as a challenge to North American hegemony in Cuba while also critiquing North American racism.

Résumé :
Cultural consumption writ large has had a prominent place in the sociological discipline since Pierre Bourdieu. While Bourdieu often considered sport in analyses of culture, there have since been relatively few studies that are focused on considering sport within the broader landscape of cultural consumption. This paper seeks to assess the place of sports participation within the cultural lifestyles of Canadians. To this end, this paper employs multiple latent class analyses of various cultural and sporting variables from a large-scale Canadian government survey. It also employs regression analyses of those latent class groups. The results show three primary groups of consumers, pointing strongly to confirming the omnivore thesis in Canada. The results of the core of the analysis show, however, strong delineations in which sports these different groups consume. Ultimately then, the cultural domain of sports may be an area where omnivores practise more distinctive consumption, eschewing the sports of other consumer groups.

Résumé :
Over the last decade, a voluminous debate has evolved around the concept of globalization, prompting Featherstone and Lash (1995) to identify this multifaceted phenomenon as replacing modernity and postmodernity as the central thematic within current cultural theorizing (for example, see Appadurai, 1990; McGrew, 1992; Robertson, 1995; Wallerstein, 1990). In light of this claim, the goal of this paper is to examine the interconnections and disjunctures that distinguish the complex relationship between global media and local meaning within the context of contemporary transnational sport culture. Specifically, the paper uses Michael Jordan—a vivid example of the “export to the entire world” (Kellner, 1995, p. 5) of much of America’s commodity-sign culture—as a vehicle for critically exploring the relationship between globally mediated cultural products, and the cultural contingencies of three markedly distinct localized contexts. Such a task will be realized by reconstructing Jordan’s location and significance within particular domains of contemporary New Zealand, Polish, and British cultures. In this way, we hope to provide a preliminary analysis of the global-local nexus as it pertains to the transnationally imaged and commodified expressions of American sporting culture.

Taking inspiration from the ethico-onto-epistemological implications of new materialisms, this poem is a modest and partial attempt at experimenting with new ways of bringing my sporting past-present-future together to reimagine feminist politics, vulnerabilities, and the implications of sporting policies that continue to reinforce gender binaries, harming, and excluding so many. This piece of writing was triggered—in a visceral and unexpected way—by a surge of transphobic discourse in Aotearoa New Zealand society in 2021, with groups of athletes, pseudo-feminists, doctors, politicians, and the public protesting transgender women’s rights to participate in sport at elite and community levels.
