Résumé :
Some administrative border areas are recently defined as cross-border areas, and have become a key phenomenon that is challenged by disparities between urban and rural areas. In this setting, the cross-sector collaboration is presented as a type of organization to respond challenges generating from these disparities. Despite its complexity, the cross-sector collaboration is becoming a significant strategy in cross-border areas to instigate sustainable development issues through bringing new dynamics into the traditional settings. From a realist perspective, the researchers in this study explore the cross-sector collaboration and approaches to organizing cross-sector collaboration in cross-border areas. Each side ofan administrative border in cross-border areas, there exists three main societal sectors - public, private and third sector having representation as collaboration stakeholders. In order to deal with sustainable development of cross-border areas through cross-sector collaboration, resource management and stakeholder management approaches are problematized as not adequate to address various dimensions of complexities regarded in cross-sector collaboration in cross-border areas. Moreover, the village of Röstånga has been studied in order to examine the practice of these approaches to cross-sector collaboration along the administrative border between Svalöv and Klippan municipalities in Skåne region.Fundamental factors in organizing cross-sector collaboration in cross-border areas have been identified throughout the case study. In order to organize cross-sector collaboration in such setting, the researchers also find out that there are 'other issues', commonly known by public and third sector as meeting points, local logic and social capital, that are not approached within neither resource management nor stakeholder management approach. These other issues need to be instantly addressed in cross-sector collaboration in cross-border rural areas in addition to the identified fundamental factors. At the end, the researchersdevelop 'Social Issue Management Approach' that integrates management-with-stakeholders approach, as having no focal organization but a common focal issue, and social issue approach as an ideal strategy suggested to organize cross-sector collaboration in cross-border areas.

Résumé :
The purpose of this study is to investigate one of the European Structural Fundprogrammes, Interreg V Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak (ÖKS) and the priority areaTransportation. The programme gives financial support to transportation projectsaiming to develop sustainable (environmentally friendly) transportation alternativesand solutions. Through studies and theories on cross-border collaboration (CBC) and goals forsustainable transportation a major need of joint strategies for solving shared problems, such as environmental concerns has been demonstrated. This approach ofcollaboration projects as a pillar for sustainable development has been the foundationof how the current Interreg programme has been studied and the starting point for thisresearch. The study aims to clarify the relationship between the overall view uponcooperation and joint development programmes (within areas stretching over nationaland administrative borders, such as transportation) and the specific Interregprogramme. A programme which during current period (2014-2020) experienced adrastic decline of number of applicants. In order to further understand the context thecurrent study has trough empirical research defined added values (advantages) of theCBC but also identified the perceived difficulties and barriers (disadvantages). Thefounding’s have further been compared and supplemented with perspectives fromrelevant actors engaged in transportation development. This material has beencollected through qualitative interviews enabling a vital and good understanding ofconcerned actors and their view of advantages and disadvantages with CBC. Theanalysis has also enabled the conclusion that the general view among the actors is thatcollaboration projects are necessary for a sustainable development. However, studiedprogramme with declined number of applicants did not succeed in attracting desiredparticipants. Consequently, the actors were also asked to share their view upon thedecline of applicants for current Interreg period. One identified explanation wasrelated to the administrative burden which was perceived too heavy by the actors. Inaddition, the financial part was perceived to be too low or poorly designed. Theknowledge about the programme was also found to be limited among some of theactors. To be able to involve more participants in the future it has been concluded thatimprovements within the three areas of defined obstacles have to be implemented. This investigation and findings aim to contribute to increased insights andunderstanding of the cross-border cooperation process in order to be able to reach andinvolve relevant actors in the most favourable way for successful future projects anddesired sustainable development.

The subject of this doctoral thesis revolves around the analysis of China’s policies, foreign direct investment, and international collaboration with regard to innovation. Chapter one, co-written with Ilja Rudyk, explores the rise of Chinese inventions in Europe, China’s innovation policies, and assesses their effect with regard to domestic ownership in strategic technologies through the lens of European patent data. Further, our methodology allows for an assessment of effects of the policies on characteristics of the patents, reflecting their quality. Chapter two, joint work with Anthony Howell and Jia Lin, investigates the effects of Chinese cross-border mergers and acquisitions on the domestic innovation activities and financial performance of the firms engaging in such foreign direct investment. The third chapter addresses the relationship between international collaboration and patent quality through an analysis of Chinese patent applications in Europe. It investigates the pattern of Chinese international co-inventions in Europe and scrutinizes the role cross-border co-invention play for the quality of Chinese overseas patent applications. It thereby contributes to the understanding of China’s internationalization and technological catch-up

Hagel, Michael W. « An exploration of international acquisition and Joint Venture collaboration as means for closing strategic deficiencies of automotive suppliers : providing an evidence-based advisory framework for cross-border transactions with US partners ». Thesis, University of Gloucestershire, 2018. http://eprints.glos.ac.uk/5709/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Purpose/objectives: The study considered international Joint Venture projects (‘IJV’) and international acquisitions (for recognition purposes, the term of international Mergers & Acquisitions ‘IM&A’ is used even though mergers are not specifically part of the study) with a focus on automotive suppliers in the passenger car market and regionally on US partners. The objective was to analyse how suppliers in the automotive industry can close their strategic deficiencies through these IJV and IM&A transactions. The regional focus on US partners was chosen, as the USA is a major market for automotive suppliers (volumes/size and innovation-focus). The idea was to identify, categorise, and subsequently analyse decision-making parameters of the engagement in IJV and IM&A. Design/methodology/approach: The research had two main areas: a general literature review and an empirical part with a case study approach. As the research drew on a constructivist perspective, the empirical part of the research was conducted with a qualitative approach. At the centre were three case studies of a major German supplier analysed in depth: one IM&A, one IJV and one ‘hybrid’ transaction. These studies examined good practices, highlights, and challenges through semi-structured interviews. Senior experts in the Business Units and collaboration teams involved in these strategic projects were interviewed. Documentation reviews and the researcher’s own observations flanked these interviews. Findings: Bringing together ideas from the existing literature, and enriching them with insights from projects in the real automotive world, the current study contains valuable considerations about these complex strategic transactions. In order to enhance the deliberate use of these collaborations, the research reflected on the possible alignments of the various parameters and strategic factors. Contributions: The study represents a contribution to the practice and to the academic world, since it is a study to bridge the relevant theory/practice literature with real casestudy- based insights of German-USA inter-firm collaborations in the automotive industry. On that basis, an ‘advisory framework’ was developed to enhance decisionmaking in that area of corporate strategy. It focuses on important factors to consider when engaging in cross-border IJV and IM&A in a specific industry. Research limitations/implications: The research results would need to be further explored in practice, which could be the subject of future research. Limitations from the current study stem from the chosen research design and sample size.

Due to its institutionalised cross-border cooperation, the Upper Rhine cross-border region seems to offer theideal conditions for the optimal teaching/learning of the neighbour’s language. However, systematic learningof the language spoken on the other side of the Rhine does not seem to take into account either the regionalspecificities of this particular geographical context (Faucompré & Putsche, 2015) or the significant influenceof proximity to the neighbour’s language and culture on the pupils’ and their teachers’ representations(Putsche, 2011; Raasch, 2002). This doctoral study proposes to respond to this problem through theimplementation of a collaborative and participatory action research approach (Gonzalez-Laporte, 2014;Macaire, 2007) with four teachers of the neighbour’s language working in secondary schools in Strasbourgand Freiburg im Breisgau. The aim is to develop and test out an educational approach that is designed tobe cross-border (Raasch, 2005 and 2008) and to take into account the learners’ and their teachers’representations and the particularities of the Upper Rhine space. The results, which are mainly qualitative, highlight the need to systematically use a cross-border educationalapproach when teaching the neighbour's language in this context in order to make it consistent with theneeds of learners by enabling them to acquire what I call ‘cross-border communicative competence’.The implementation of this action research approach enabled the teachers to take a position on their role asteachers of the neighbour’s language in a border context. This gave my cross-border educational approachidea a lasting dimension by turning it into a kind of permanent cross-border laboratory, which is in keepingwith the dynamics of the Upper Rhine region

During recent years the sharing economy has had an increased impact on the modern business climate, and the level of engagement among researchers has increased. The sharing economy is changing the way individuals perceive business and challenges traditional business models. Sharing economy firms are implementing innovative business approaches to face the dynamic business climate. Its peer-to-peer sharing philosophy is fighting against the increasing hyper-consumption we are facing. Previous scholars have discussed how traditional firms can gain market shares and internationalize through M&As and strategic partnerships. However, the research on how M&As and partnerships can be implemented among sharing economy firms is minimal. Also, the empirical studies regarding this field are inadequate. Accordingly, examining this research gap in practice and gaining a deeper understanding of the subject is highly relevant. This thesis aims to shed light on the motives behind sharing economy firms internationalizing, mainly through mergers and acquisitions or strategic partnerships, involving at least one sharing platform in the process. To accomplish the intentions of this study, a qualitative research approach has been conducted, with a diverse group of respondents from different parts of the world and operating in various areas within the sharing economy. Moreover, the empirical data has been collected through conducting findings from four semi-structured interviews. The outcome of this research implies that the motives for sharing economy firms to internationalize using M&As or strategic partnerships are beneficial regarding the sharing economy characteristics. For instance, the paper highlights how sharing economy firms have a comfortable path internationalizing into foreign markets but can struggle to gain platform user activity in the early stages in new markets. Therefore, are M&As and strategic partnerships strategic tools for sharing economy firms to acquire an already existing customer base or have strategic alliances that can ease cultural barriers and such when entering foreign markets.

The present study carried out a comparative investigation of three projects of three organizations of collaborative journalism: The Panama Papers, of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ); Microsoft, of Investigate Europe; and “América Latina, Región de Carteles” by Connectas. In order to understand the impact of these organizations on the media market, their commitments and practices, the present study carried out a two-stage analysis: seven qualitative semi-structured interviews in depth, and quantitative content analysis of 10 pieces of news from each of the projects. Some results obtained are that collaborative investigative journalism organizations are more than platforms, they publish, teach, capture resources for themselves and their own investigations, as well as often owning their own teams. Collaborative journalism organizations are non-profit media organizations that, because they are smaller, more agile and flexible, and mainly producing more and better investigations and high-quality information, have been more effective in conducting large-scale investigative journalism, and more efficient in raising funds from a variety of sources.

The collaboration of craft and design is emerging design praxis in Taiwan. The complement between craft and design inspires designers and craftspeople to create works with more commercial and cultural values. The fruitful results of the collaboration have positive impacts on both sides. Under the collaboration, designers acquire knowledge of craft techniques and materials, and obtain inspiration to further their creation. On the other hand, the designers play a catalytic role to empower the craftspeople and assist them in designing products to meet modern market needs. The craft-design collaboration not only brings value-added to each other but also contributes to knowledge for both sides. Collaborating with craftspeople has become a new trend of design praxis, the collaboration pattern is still under development and needs more exploration to achieve the better success. This study aims to get insight of craft-design collaboration by conducting case studies via Craft and Design Cross-border R&;D Cooperation Program(hereafter be shorted as Yii), which was conceived by National Taiwan Craft Research Institute and Taiwan Design Center. The objectives of this study are:(1) to understand the development process of Yii project, (2) to discover the factors facilitating craft-design collaboration, (3) to indentify the roles and the required capabilities of the designers in craft-design collaboration. The findings of this study are outlined as follow: 1. The development process of Yii includes:Matching stage, Co-creation stage, Prototyping stage, and Feedback stage. 2. The enabling factors that enhance the cooperation include:same motivation, mechanism of exchanging ideas(workshop), international exhibition opportunities, face to face communication, interesting design ideas, convincing arguments, heterogeneity members(design director), and good relationship between members. The barriers include: vague sketches, poor communication, bad attitude, lack of project leader, project outcomes not for sale, and insufficient time for collaboration. The lack of craft knowledge can be considered either an enabler or a barrier depending on the context. 3. The roles a designer can play in the collaboration include: learner, challenger, facilitator, and leader. The core abilities of designers in the collaboration include:innovation, aesthetics, visualization skills, computer-aided design skills, knowledge of engineering and manufacturing, knowledge of technology and material, and marketing. The peripheral design capabilities include:research, teamwork, communication, leadership, management, and integration.

Since the exchange between mainland China and Taiwan, smuggling, drug traffic, money laundering, human traffic and telecom fraud overrun across border. After Jinmen Agreement was signed by both sides in 1990, crime across border of both sides still increased for close exchange which contributed to the Crime Fighting and Mutual Judicial Agreement of Both Sides of The Taiwan Straits signed between Taiwan Strait Exchange Foundation and Association for Relations across the Taiwan Straits on April 26th, 2009 to build institutional mechanism to commonly fight crimes to cope with cross border crimes. However, it was actually still affected by political sovereignty disputes of Taiwan and Mainland China. Besides, it still remained coordination, execution and limitation in information exchange, investigation and evidence collection, criminal investigation system, contact channel and agreement articles. Moreover, cross border crimes of both sides have been inclined to be international with the trend of globalization under the investigation of governments of both sides and spread to surrounding countries, especially Southeast Asian countries which impacted current cooperation model of fighting crimes of both sides. Taking telecom fraud crime of both sides as an example, it has overrun in Taiwan and mainland China and spread to surrounding countries. After investigation by governments of both sides, it has transferred to Southeast Asian countries where government ignores and people have low awareness so that they can continue such fraud. After Crime Fighting and Mutual Judicial Agreement of Both Sides of The Taiwan Straits was signed, related units have cooperated with Southeast Asian countries for many times to wipe out telecom fraud groups and made mechanism to commonly fight cross-border crimes changed. Based on telecom fraud cross-border crime cases and in-depth interview, this study explored 1. limitation of Crime Fighting and Mutual Judicial Agreement of Both Sides of The Taiwan Straits, 2. channels and models of cross-border crimes fighting of current both sides of cross straits and Southeast Asian countries; 3. factors of telecom fraud crimes spreading from Mainland China to Southeast Asian countries; 4. prominent questions of practical application in case study; 5. dilemma of current both sides and Southeast Asian countries fighting telecom fraud cases; 6. opportunities and challenges of cooperation between both sides and Southeast Asian countries fighting cross-border telecom fraud crimes. It is found that mechanism of fighting cross-border crimes of both sides in globalization can enhance and amend agreement to fight crimes of both sides in third place, widely build official and non-official connection channels between Taiwan and Southeast Asian countries, enhance sending liaison officer function, join hands to build multiple fighting cross-border crime mechanism with Southeast Asian countries, deeply research cross-border crime causes, legalize investigation and evidence collection procedure of each country, carry out unit-to-unit case cooperation and promote signing official judicial mutual agreement.

Résumé :
This study sought to enrich the research in cross-border strategic brand alliance (SBA), an international business practice highly utilized today. In order to spread out the risk of competing in international markets, firms formed alliances with overseas counterparts. However, confusing positioning and inaccuracies in communication in cross-cultural settings reduced the success rate of these partnerships. The content analysis examined cross-border SBA advertisements to shed light on their communicational strategies. Taiwan and the US, representative of inherent cultural values in Eastern and Western countries, served as great research subjects for this comparative study. The findings suggested that cross-border SBA advertisements do not have significantly distinctive communication strategies except for the inherent difference in multi-national characteristics. However, cross-border SBA advertisements in both countries differ from generic advertisements documented in previous studies in terms of information cues, advertising appeals, and general communication strategies. The comparison between cross-border SBA advertisements was reflective of the cultural differences in these cultural contexts. In sum, cross-border SBA advertisements were embedded with stronger cultural distinctiveness and in need of special execution to integrate proper messages.

Fritz, Justin. « The SWELSWÁLET of the W̱SÁNEĆ Nation : narratives of a “nation (re)building process” ». Thesis, 2017. https://dspace.library.uvic.ca//handle/1828/8842.

Résumé :
In this Master’s thesis, I document my experience working with members of the W̱SÁNEĆ Nation in their efforts to revitalize the reef net fishery. As part of this research project, I interviewed W̱SÁNEĆ community members, and I created a digital map of reef net fishing locations (SWELSWÁLET). In each of these interviews, different W̱SÁNEĆ community members chose to frame reef net fishing differently, and they highlighted specific and unique “alternative political approaches” toward W̱SÁNEĆ cultural resurgence (Kew & Miller 1999:58-59). Despite these differences, each W̱SÁNEĆ community member that I interviewed believed that reef net fishing is something that “needs to be shared” (XA’LATE, pers. comm., June 14, 2016). In Chapter 1, I explore the variations in what specific W̱SÁNEĆ community members want shared. In Chapters 2 and 3, however, I examine the delicate cultural, political, and legal contexts that have made sharing a complicated process. In Chapter 2, I analyze how the BC Treaty Process (BCTP) has exacerbated conflicts among First Nations in British Columbia. Further, I discuss the impact that these conflicts have had on how the W̱SÁNEĆ Nation shares information with their intranational and international neighbours. In Chapter 3, I explore how my misaligned expectations of knowledge sharing in collaborative community-based research—as a white settler man—clashed with “the values and beliefs, practices and customs of [the W̱SÁNEĆ Nation]” (L. Smith 2012:15-16; Lassiter 2005). I also make recommendations for how settler researchers in the future should proceed with research projects in these contexts.
