Résumé :
The main purpose of the publication is the development of theoretical approaches, systematization of the results of analysis and definition of measures for the formation of logistic systems of trade enterpreneurship subjects (trade enterprises), which belong to the small business sector. The peculiarities of formation were identified and the problematic aspects of the modern stage of entrepreneurship development in Ukraine were identified. The existence of the logistic component in the general complex of the conduct of trading activity by the entrepreneurship subjects is determined. The essence and ratio of concepts «system of logistic» and «logistics system» of the enterprise are determined. The objective of the logistics system organization as a complex, economic and technical and technological system covering the logistics system of the enterprise is emphasized), personnel of the management services of the enterprise logistic activity, as well as legal, organizational, managerial and methodical principles of all these elements interaction of the system and its management, formed on the basis of the scientific and theoretical basis (theory) of logistics management. The peculiarities of the functioning of small business entities in Ukraine and the averaged parameters of commodity flows in this sector of economy are investigated, factors of logistic flows organization specificity formation in the retail segment, which influence the requirements for the creation and operation of trade enterprises logistic systems and the choice of approaches to them, are determined. The attention is drawn to the need to consider as the main factor in the formation of the trade complex system of logistic of operational and functional processes of logistics activities, which are carried out by a trading company in order to bring commodity flows to end buyers of goods. The necessity of determining the structure of the logistics system of the trading company is focused on taking into account the resources available from the dealer in order to create opportunities for organizational, economic, technical and technological interaction with other supply chain participants in which the given enterprise is involved, and simultaneously ensuring compliance of the goods sold with the requirements end buyers. The key directions of logistic activity improvement of enterprises of trade – subjects of small (and micro) entrepreneurship, which are connected with technical and technological and infrastructure improvements within the enterprise logistics system, introduction of modern management technologies in the logistics management subsystem and logistics administration, are grounded, as well as the use of outsourcing capabilities of logistics functions and operations and the use of modern communication tools for the radical change of trade technologies , which will be reflected in the requirements for organizing a complex of logistics activities of retailers and, accordingly, logistic systems created by them. The purpose of the research is to develop theoretical approaches, to systematize the results of the analysis of the essential characteristics and the composition of the trade company system of logistics, and to identify the main measures for the formation of the system of logistics of the subjects of trade enterprise (trade enterprises), which belong to the small business sector. Object of research – subjects of trade enterprise – trade enterprises, which belong to the small business sector. The subject of the study is theoretical and methodological principles of logistic activity organization and conceptual approaches to the construction of logistic formations in the conditions of integration processes. In accordance with the goal formulated, the main objectives of the study: • on the basis of analysis of the most common scientific theories to determine mechanisms for managing them; • to identify new approaches for identifying the essence of logistics, the content of logistics activities of trade enterprises and identify the actual problems of their construction; • to formulate a conceptual approach, basic principles and applied principles of organization of logistic formations with the participation of small business entities; • to develop scientific and practical recommendations on the construction of trade enterprises systems of logistics and their development taking into account the integration processes in the field of commodity circulation.

Résumé :
According to the distinctiveness heuristic, subjects rely more on detailed recollections (and less on familiarity) when memory is tested for pictures relative to words, leading to reduced false recognition. If so, then neural regions that have been implicated in effortful postretrieval monitoring (e.g., dorsolateral prefrontal cortex) might be recruited less heavily when trying to remember pictures. We tested this prediction with the criterial recollection task. Subjects studied black words, paired with either the same word in red font or a corresponding colored picture. Red words were repeated at study to equate recognition hits for red words and pictures. During fMRI scanning, alternating red word memory tests and picture memory tests were given, using only white words as test stimuli (say “yes” only if you recollect a corresponding red word or picture, respectively). These tests were designed so that subjects had to rely on memory for the criterial information. Replicating prior behavioral work, we found enhanced rejection of lures on the picture test compared to the red word test, indicating that subjects had used a distinctiveness heuristic. Critically, dorsolateral prefrontal activity was reduced when rejecting familiar lures on the picture test, relative to the red word test. These findings indicate that reducing false recognition via the distinctiveness heuristic is not heavily dependent on frontally mediated postretrieval monitoring processes.

Résumé :
Volumetry and surface rendering of the cerebral lobes are effective for evaluating lobar atrophy. This paper proposes a novel computer-aided system for segmenting the frontal lobe from 3-D human brain IR-FSPGR MR images with the fuzzy rule-based active contour model (ACM). The proposed system uses the criterial curves consisting of the central sulcus and the Sylvian fissure, which are given by users with the proposed graphical user interface. The user-given criterial curves are optimized by the fuzzy rule-based ACM. The fuzzy rule-based ACM can represent physicians’ knowledge with fuzzy if-then rules. With these optimized curves and the anterior and posterior commissures, the frontal lobe is segmented automatically. The experimental results on three healthy volunteers operated by an expert user and three beginner users showed that our system could segment the frontal lobe with high repeatability by any users and to any subjects.

Résumé :
AbstractSpanish doubly filled complementizer (DFComp) clauses differ from plain embedded questions in a number of respects (availability of discourse-related projections, islandhood, sequence of tenses, licensing of discourse particles). I argue that the contrast is caused by the presence in the left periphery of these clauses of an illocutionary projection (Haegeman 2004, 2006; Coniglio and Zegrean 2012; Woods 2016b) between the leftmost projection, here identified as Haegeman’s (2004) SubP, and the criterial interrogative projections (InterP and QembP). This illocutionary projection prevents syncretism of the clause-typing and the criterial projections, the default option in plain embedded clauses. This not only explains the range of structural phenomena differentiating DFComp clauses and embedded questions, but also a key semantic property of the former, namely their speech-act denotation. Finally, DFComp clauses are compared with plain embedded questions displaying root behavior under first-person matrix subjects and with English inverted embedded questions. Both are shown to pose minimal variants of the structural pattern proposed for DFComp clauses.

Résumé :
When are psychologists entitled to call a certain theoretical construct “consciousness?” Until the past few years most cognitive psychologists avoided dealing with conscious experience, in part because of a widespread view that there are no reliable empirical constraints to provide a foundation for theory. Today there is an increasing willingness to address the question. But how do we find the relevant empirical constraints? This article maintains that we only need to specify the minimal conditions of occurrence and nonoccurrence of a conscious experience, as expressed in a reliable way by subjects. One can do this by contrastively analyzing closely matched pairs of psychological events which seem to differ only in respect to the fact that one member of the pair is conscious, while the other is not. The article discusses five sets of such phenomena, and suggests some general properties that characterize them. Much of the empirical evidence needed for a theory of consciousness already exists today–only the theory itself is lacking.

Résumé :
Cartography and geoinformatics are technical-based fields which deal with modelling and visualization of landscape in the form of a map. The theoretical foundation is necessary to obtain during study of cartography and geoinformatics based mainly on mathematics. For the given subjects, mathematics is necessary for understanding of many procedures that are connected to modelling of the Earth as a celestial body, to ways of its projection into a plane, to methods and procedures of modelling of landscape and phenomena in society and visualization of these models in the form of electronic as well as classic paper maps. Not only general mathematics, but also its extension of differential geometry of curves and surfaces, ways of approximation of lines and surfaces of functional surfaces, mathematical statistics and multi-criterial analyses seem to be suitable and necessary. Underestimation of the significance of mathematical education in cartography and geoinformatics is inappropriate and lowers competence of cartographers and professionals in geographic information science and technology to solve problems.

Résumé :
The article presents the theoretical and methodological foundations of a holistic process of musical research, providing the development of musical thinking of masters. In this regard, strategic and tactical approaches to the research of musical thinking of the individual were developed. At the same time the rational-creative research approach was the leading methodological foundation of the holistic process of the emergence and formation of musical thinking among masters. In other words, the research became a methodology of musical education, since on its basis and in its process the development of musical thinking of music teachers has occurred. In the course of this research, future musicians in their professional activities achieved rational creativity. With the help of the system approach, the structural basis was provided both for studying the musical thinking of the individual and for the holistic musical process. The theoretical basis was the criterial-value approach to the assessment of the musical thinking of masters, as well as to a holistic research of their musical art. These theoretical preconditions have been practically realized with the help of a personality-activity approach to future musicians in the process of their interaction with subjects, phenomena of musical art. Consequently, the system of relations between informing and stimulating situations of interactions with subjects, phenomena of musical art was the object of the research of masters. This system was developed on the basis of the unity of the systemic, criterial-value and personality-activity approaches presented under the aegis of the rational-creative approach. The generalized mental actions mastered by the masters in the process of a holistic of musical research were: the skill to select the goal of musical research; the skill to find or creatively build up tactics of relations that arise in the process of interaction with the subjects of musical research; the skill to elaborate a value-methodological strategy; the skill to assess, self-evaluate the relevance, reliability, strength of the developed strategy and tactics of the relationship of the holistic process of musical research. The factors determining the development of the musical thinking of the masters were identified such as: interest in activity of musical research; the need to engage in it and the vocation for it; qualities of personality, necessary to musician-teacher-performer; knowledge of peculiarities of the development of musical art; skills: constructive, organizational, communicative, gnostic. Thus, on the one hand, the achievement of the professional reasonableness of the musician in the process of research the holistic musical process is ensured. On the other hand, the basic ideas of the concept of the formation of the musical thinking of the personality are realized, which consist in the fact that the formation of the designated thinking is determined by the dialectical unity of generalized mental actions that constitute the essence and content of this thinking, the factors that influence its development, and the system of strategic and tactical approaches necessary for its implementation. As a result, the system of professional university training has been transformed taking into account approaches to: musical education as a research of the holistic musical process; researching as the self-critical activity of a future musician; a musician as a special person who takes a subjective position, and creates polysubject (dialogical) relations in the course of mutual communication.

Abstract.EXPLORA QUESTIONNAIRE FOR VOCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCEThe guidance and career counseling are increasingly needed in our educational system to the extent that career decision making is seen as an increasingly complex process that is affected by personal factors ( questions , immaturity , indecision, preparation and information of our students ) and contextual factors ( situation of the labor market , globalization , increased specialization and elective subjects , modification training routes , creation of new degrees , ...). From this perspective it is necessary that professional counseling and educational and vocational guidance have the precise tools to stimulate the development of vocational maturity of our young people they can get to make effective decisions realistic and mature. The aim of this paper is to present the psychometric characteristics of the EXPLORA, Questionnaire for Vocational Guidance. The EXPLORA assesses six professional fields (Technical- Manual , Scientific - Investigative, Artistic , Creative , Social - Assistive, Persuasive Business - and Office- Management ), which correspond to the types and environmental models of the theory of Holland ( 1997) , taking into account the interests , skills and personal characteristics of the individuals . In order to assess its psychometric properties was applied to a sample of 3570 subjects from different educational levels. The reliability of the scales measured by Cronbach ‘s alpha coefficient ranged between 0.92 and 0.94 . The different procedures used to test its construct validity and criterial evidence the suitability of the instrument to the theoretical model on which it is based. The results allow us to conclude that this instrument has sufficient scientific and technical assurance processes for application in orientation and vocational counseling.Keyword: Vocational interest assessment, vocational guidance, vocational counseling, career decision making, vocational choiceResumen.
In this essay, I will examine some murky questions concerning the theory of A’-movement in Italian. I will focus on two main empirical problems: the behaviour of Criterial Subjects (Rizzi 2006) and the syntax of multiple wh-questions in Italian. Both these domain of inquiry pose some questions about the restrictions that A’-movement has to respect and the consequences that these restrictions have on the superficial form of languages. The aim of this study is to show that many idiosyncratic properties concerning these two empirical domains can be explained by a rather simple theory of syntactic computation. The general picture that will emerge is that the syntactic computation in many A’- constructions can be described as a quite simple device, which is limited by (rather) independent interface requirements (Chomsky 1995 and subsequent works) and by some structural characteristics of the left periphery (Rizzi 1997, Cinque & Rizzi 2008). Moreover, it will emerge that the syntactic computation can make use of different strategies to circumvent these restrictions. In Chapter 2, I will go through a long-standing problem concerning the position of subjects in a number of A’-constructions in Romance languages. I will show, that some puzzling restrictions on the position of subjects can be explained adopting two basic elements: a feature-based theory of locality (Starke 2001, Rizzi 2004, Abels 2012) and a quantificational theory of Criterial Subjects (Bianchi & Chesi, to appear). I will argue that it is possible to derive a wide empirical range of data in a number of Romance Languages, from these two basic ingredients. In Chapter 3, I will examine a rather neglected group of Italian constructions, namely Multiple wh-questions. I will show that Italian displays a rather complex behaviour with respect to these structures, much more complex than previously thought. The idea is that 6 the whole pattern of data can be derived by two simple restrictions on A’-constructions. On the one hand, Italian is restricted to have only one position for wh-phrases in the left periphery of the clause (Rizzi 1997); on the other hand, only a sub-class of wh-phrases can be interpreted without being moved, namely argumental wh-phrases (Reinhardt 1997, 1998). I will argue that these two well-known restrictions force the syntactic computation to employ different circumvention strategies, from which the complex pattern of data emerges. I will argue that coordination turns out to be a flexible tool that syntax employs to build multiple wh-questions in compliance with the restrictions mentioned above.

Résumé :
The research was stimulated by involvement in leading elements of an Education Management programme. Developing part of the teaching material led to the realisation that while pupils' choice of school has been extensively researched it appeared that subject choice, particularly at A level had not. It also became apparent that ideas and models concerning decision making, extensively adopted within the Consumer Behaviour literature had not been applied in this context. Extensive reviews ofthe literature confirmed this position and indicated that the post sixteen school choice was also under researched and further that it was not possible to apply extant consumer behaviour models directly to the A level or School choice contexts. The research programme consisted of a mixture of qualitative and quantitative techniques. Building on elements of theory, from the literature, exploratory research employing focus groups was used to develop an initial model of adolescent pupil decision making. Early in the exploratory research it was found that the decision for adolescents choosing where to study their A levels was inextricably linked to choice of subjects. Choice of A level subjects was added to the research programme. Based on the exploratory results a quantitative study, using questionnaires, was developed to test the model on both single (choosing a school) and multiple (choosing A level subjects) choice situations. The study investigated differences between single-choice and multiple-choice decision making, an area neglected by consumer research, which provides at least a partial explanation of the process used by the pupils when they choose schools/colleges and A level subjects. Findings identify that although some aspects ofthe choice process are similar, there are important differences between the two types of decision. Evoked set are larger for multiple-choice decisions, and multi-choice decisions are likely to involve more stages in the decision making process than single-choice decisions. The results also identified that the parents' role has changed from 'decider', when their children were younger, to 'influencer', with the adolescent pupils becoming the decision makers. Concomitantly, choice criteria are shown to have evolved with 'discipline' decreasing markedly in importance and subject range increasing. The pre-eminence of personal sources of information is confinued but co-orientation emphasised.

Résumé :
The evolution of fiber composites has resulted in a new paradigm of material selection for automotive industries. In specific, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastics (CFRTP) has shown its advantages in the feasibility of mass production as well as its high strength to weight ratio; allowing significant weight reduction compared to conventional steel largely in dominance today. In automotive sectors where weight saving is a major factor in operation, material shift from steel to CFRTP could be an inevitable and societally profitable future of automobiles. In the thesis, topology optimization is conducted on a bonnet-like plate using CFRTP subjected to various load cases and criteria regarding vehicle safety. Furthermore, results of such optimizations are compared to that of existing optimization results using the same material but designed for stiffness only. Finally, conducted optimization is analyzed and verified by Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The purpose of the proposed thesis is to promote vehicle safety and initiation of mass production of automotive parts by the use of CFRTP materials; updating the use of conventional steel components currently in dominance today in automotive industries.

Résumé :
This thesis presents a research project and results of design and optimization of a composite wing structure for a large aircraft in flying wing configuration. The design process started from conceptual design and preliminary design, which includes initial sizing and stressing followed by numerical modelling and analysis of the wing structure. The research was then focused on the minimum weight optimization of the /composite wing structure /subject to multiple design /constraints. The modelling, analysis and optimization process has been performed by using the NASTRAN code. The methodology and technique not only make the modelling in high accuracy, but also keep the whole process within one commercial package for practical application. The example aircraft, called FW-11, is a 250-seat commercial airliner of flying wing configuration designed through our MSc students Group Design Project (GDP) in Cranfield University. Started from conceptual design in the GDP, a high-aspect-ratio and large sweepback angle flying wing configuration has been adopted. During the GDP, the author was responsible for the structural layout design and material selection. Composite material has been chosen as the preferable material for both the inner and outer wing components. Dans ASME 2019 Pressure Vessels & Piping Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2019-93155.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Abstract Design equation (4.3.1) for the minimum required thickness of a cylindrical shell subjected to internal pressure in Part 4 “design by rule (DBR)” of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Division 2 [1] is based on the Tresca Yield Criterion, while design by analysis (DBA) in Part 5 of the Division 2 Code is based on the von Mises Yield Criterion. According to ASME PTB-1 “ASME Section VIII – Division 2 Criteria and Commentary”, the difference in results is about 15% due to use of the two different criteria. Although the von Mises Yield Criterion will result in a shell wall thickness less than that from Tresca Yield Criterion, Part 4 (DBR) of ASME Division 2 adopts the latter for a more convenient design equation. To use the von Mises Criterion in lieu of Tresca to reduce shell wall thickness, one has to follow DBA rules in Part 5 of Division 2, which typically requires detailed numeric analysis performed by experienced stress analysts. This paper proposes a simple design equation for the minimum required thickness of a cylindrical shell subjected to internal pressure based on the von Mises Yield Criterion. The equation is suitable for both thin and thick cylindrical shells. Calculation results from the equation are validated by results from limit load analyses in accordance with Part 5 of ASME Division 2 Code.

Résumé :
There are many middle areas in cities, such as open terraces and pilotis, at the boundary between public and private spaces. Urban street space is full of diversity and flexibility as a middle area between the public and private, with space created as by-products that protrude into the street and storefronts that are open to the street. Watanabe focused on the composition and content of the middle area in the storefronts of shopping streets and classified the middle area into two types: the “intrusion” and “extrusion.” This study focused on the offset of street-facing storefronts in the middle area. This study aimed to analyze the subject’s sensory street center position and gain insights into street planning in the shopping district. The subjects wore a head-mounted display (HMD) and experimented with immersive virtual reality (VR). Ten healthy college students in their twenties participated in the experiment. The width of the street was set to 6m, and buildings were created to flank the street. In the building on one side, a middle area was set to face the street. Four middle areas were created by multiplying two offset values (1m and 2m) and two unevenness directions (concave and convex), respectively. One of the four types of middle areas was arranged on one side of the buildings in each condition. The street was flowing so that the subjects felt it at a speed of 0.5 m/sec. Furthermore, to consider the differences in the criteria for determining the central axis among the subjects, a street space without a middle area was also created as the base space. While the street space flowed from front to back, the subject started from the edge of the building on one side and walked to the center of the buildings with his legs. The coordinates in the width direction of the position where the subject finally stopped, feeling that he had reached the center, were extracted and recorded as the coordinates of the sensory center. The following two findings were obtained from the analysis of the experimental results. When the middle area was retracted, the subject’s sensory center position depended on the side of the middle area. In addition, we found that the subject’s sensory center position depended on the side of the middle area. In the future, using the width of the middle area as a variable, we will experiment with the relationship between the base and concave conditions, which produced significance in this experiment, and discover proof that subjects indicate the public/private boundary of the middle area.

Dans ASME 2010 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. ASMEDC, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2010-39018.

Résumé :
Crankshafts are subject to multiaxial fatigue because of the complex stress distribution caused by the loads when this engine component is in service. So far there is no universally accepted approach to multiaxial fatigue; each theory is used for a determined application. Among the many high-cicle fatigue criteria, two have been largely accepted to be used with mechanical components, the one based on the critical plane and the one based on the stress invariant. This work presents the comparison of the safety factors calculated with those criteria for a conventional crankshaft. As critical plane criteria we chose those known as Matake, McDiarmid, and Dang Van, each one with a different approach. Same way we chose the Sines, Crossland, and Kakuna-kawada criterias as the stress invariant approaches. First, the work describes the basic concepts and the fatigue criteria listed. Following that the loads over the crankshaft are estimated from the loads flowing through the conrods and from the dynamic of the movement for critical points of the crankshaft. The third step was to apply the criteria to evaluate the safety when the component is working at 1700, 2100, and 3050rpm, which are the speeds where the engine is subjected to the maximum torque, maximum power, and at the maximum speed conditions. The results showed that the engine analyzed did not fail, that the critical plane criteria is more conservative, and that the safety factor is not smaller than 1.77.

Résumé :
Section III of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code provides stress limitations, which are developed based on the maximum shearing stress criteria (Tresca stress criteria). Structures in a nuclear plant are subjected to a variety of loadings (deterministic and random). Unlike the deterministic loadings, the structural responses subjected to random excitations (such as a load induced by a fluid turbulence) must be evaluated in probabilistic terms based on the random vibration theory. One way to evaluate the structural responses under this type of loading is the Monte Carlo simulation. However, in general, a Monte Carlo simulation requires a large sampling, which is not efficient for large structures. This paper implements the Advanced First-Order Reliability Method (AFORM) to evaluate the Tresca stresses at the predefined reliability level. The failure criterion to define the performance function is considered as the principal stress difference (Tresca stress). Numerical examples demonstrate that the proposed method is accurate and efficient.

Résumé :
The objective of this study is to develop an efficient methodology for classifying patients suffering any type of blood pressure dysregulation from healthy subjects. Four features of malfunctions in blood pressure regulation are introduced, and a criterion is proposed for each feature to evaluate and distinguish patients from healthy subjects. The evaluated features are based on the analysis of difference between data related to healthy subjects and those collected from patients. The proposed criteria are implemented on a group of healthy and patient subjects by collecting their systolic blood pressure (SBP) and their heart rate (HR) time series. The proposed method is applied on three different groups of subjects each containing four healthy and eleven patients. It is shown that the algorithm properly detects the status of all fifteen subjects in one group and fourteen subjects in two groups. The results obtained indicate that the selected features have remarkable capability in detection of blood pressure dysregulation.

Résumé :
Different approaches to determine the acceptance criteria for fatigue induced failure of structural systems and components are discussed and compared. The considered approaches take basis in either optimization (societal cost-benefit analysis) or are derived from past and actual practice or codes (revealed preferences). The system acceptance criteria are expressed in terms of the maximal acceptable annual probability of collapse due to fatigue failure. Acceptance criteria for the individual fatigue failure modes are then derived using a simplified system reliability model. The consequence of fatigue failure of the individual joints is related to the overall system by evaluating the change in system reliability given fatigue failure. This is facilitated by the use of a simple indicator, the Residual Influence Factor. The acceptance criteria is thus formulated as a function of the system redundancy and complexity. In addition, the effect of dependencies in the structure on the acceptance criteria are investigated. Finally an example is presented where the optimal allocation of the risk to different welded joints in a jacket structure is performed by consideration of the necessary maintenance efforts.

Résumé :
This paper addresses a mixed mode driven cracking and its integrity assessment for applications in aging nuclear power piping. Following our earlier discussion on the use of mode-I based criteria in the current R6-method-based practice of integrity assessment, case studies conducted using finite element analysis are conducted and examined: (1) A plate with a single and multiple central crack(s) under tension; (2) A full-scale laboratory test of a straight pipe with an obliquely inserted crack in a dissimilar metal weld. Our results confirm the following earlier observations: For cases when mixed mode loading conditions are significant, (i) the fracture initiation predicted by using J-integral based mixed mode cracking criteria can approximately be achieved by an “effective stress intensity factor” based approach; (ii) it is not conservative to use a purely mode-I based criterion for the evaluation of the fracture failure assessment for typical problems of mixed mode driven cracking; (iii) The effect of multiple cracks can be significant and an assessment by only examining one crack, which is a common practice today, may not be fully conservative.

Dans ASME 2013 Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2013-97575.

Résumé :
Current minimum spacing requirements for local thin areas near structural discontinuities in pressurized components are outlined in Part 5 of API 579-1/ASME FFS-1, Fitness-For-Service. For Level 1 and Level 2 assessments, it is recognized that the current spacing criteria can be overly conservative. This paper examines preliminary results from a Materials Properties Council Fitness-For-Service Joint Industry Project that is intended to evaluate the current spacing criteria and develop a potential methodology for new assessment procedures based on computational results. Finite element models are employed to examine the interaction of stresses between local thin areas and stiffening rings and to investigate the relationship between local thin area spacing and pressure capacity. Performance is compared for models with and without areas of local metal loss near stiffening rings to form a potential basis for an improved assessment procedure. Furthermore, a criterion for classifying stiffening rings as major axisymmetric structural discontinuities is proposed.
