Résumé :
The human resource is constantly cited as an organisation's greatest asset. In a rapidly changing technological environment this is most applicable to the Information Technology (IT) function. Organisations are experiencing IT human resource problems such as low satisfaction, early plateauing, high turnover, burnout, limited advancement potential, nominal corporate commitment, supervisory aversion, poor organisational culture, and exceptional compensation. These problems are directly related to the IT professional's career. There is a lack of information and awareness surrounding IT careers to deal effectively with these problems. The research aims to create increased awareness of IT careers and the inherent problems through the development of a career management model. The research aims to identify the factors that influence IT careers, provide career management with a means to measure compatibility of the factors, and suggest solutions to incompatibility. The solving of this problem will be of mutual benefit to both organisations and individuals as they seek to better manage IT careers. After reviewing research literature relating to career anchors, IT job types, IT skills portfolios, and career dynamics a model for Effective IT Career Management (EITCM) has been constructed. The model represents the dynamic interactions between individual, organisational, and dependent factors. The model examines the compatibility of these interacting factors by measuring the levels of relevant career variables. The model suggests appropriate career management techniques to increase the compatibility of the interacting factors. An empirical study was designed and launched online to provide data that would confirm the seven Critical Success Factors (CSF) relating to the proposed model. The responses from the members of the Computer Society of South Africa (CSSA) allowed the seven hypotheses derived from the CSFs to be tested. The results of the empirical study were positive but required modification to five of the CSFs before they could be confirmed. The EITCM model was modified to reflect the improved CSFs. An awareness of career influencing factors combined with active career management is advantageous to both IT professionals and their organisations.

Résumé :
With the increase in employer-sponsored career development programs (CDPs) there has been the need to evaluate the effects of CDP interventions on the both individual and the organization. Previous-follow-up evaluations of participants in workshop oriented CDPs have focused on the effects of CDP intervention services in terms of individual outcomes (i.e., career/life planning, decision making, stress management), but have not dealt directly with the impact of CDPs on the organization, nor compared the CDP participant group with a group of nonparticipants. The subjects for this study were all employees of NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, Virginia. The CDP services are offered in a neutral on-site area, the Career Development Center (CDC), housed in the Technical Library. Using follow-up questionnaires and interviews, this study replicated many aspects of previously reported CDP evaluations. The results were generally comparable to those studies with respect to the positive impact of the CDP intervention on the individual. Specifically, participants evaluation of the CDC services received were: 1. positive with respect to the CDC process meeting their needs, 2. positive with respect to staff responsiveness, 3. positive with respect to questions they wanted answered, and 4. positive with respect to using the services again if the need arose. The matched groups of nonparticipants and participants scores (fifty in each group) were compared on the dependent variables of job satisfaction, job. commitment, and "actions taken" related to training services offered by the organization. The statistical analyses indicated nonsignificant differences with respect to job satisfaction, and significant differences with respect to job commitment and "actions taken" in the direction of the control group of nonparticipants. This study concluded from the comparative findings, with the equivocation of the job satisfaction measures, the differences noticed in job commitment were an attempt to use the services of the CDP to "self-actualize" their careers and better utilize their skills both on the job and in nonjob related activities. The "actions taken" variable did not show a high degree of involvement of the CDP participants in the organization's training services, but they did become more involved in nonjob related activities. Finally, questions were raised concerning the appropriateness of the dependent variables and matched groups design used in this study for measuring CDP effectiveness. Alternative approaches were suggested for future research.

Résumé :
Thesis (MTech (Business Administration in Project Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2011.
Human capital is both a key driver of economic growth and a means to promote overall development. In order to enhance human capital in South Africa, tertiary institutions have seen a tremendous increase in students' enrolment over the past few decades. But, in spite of the need for skilled labour, tertiary education graduates are increasingly faced with unemployment, which poses a serious obstacle to the economic growth of the country. This study investigated the role of tertiary education in enhancing selfemployment among project management graduates. This study was descriptive in nature and intended to find answers to research questions, which comprised the extent to which tertiary education seeks to motivate students to self employment. In addition, the study sought to find challenges related to self-employment facing project management students after they have completed their studies, as well as reasons why some people choose self-employment over salaried employment. Data were collected with the use of a self-administered structured questionnaire. Collected data were analysed using of the statistical software for social science (IBM SPSS Statistics version 19) for descriptive statistics in the form of tables and charts. Furthermore, statistical tests, using chi-square values at the 0.05 level of significance, were performed to determine factors influencing individuals to choose a self-employment career. The study found that education may either enhance individual entrepreneurial ability, thereby increasing the likelihood of choosing self-employment or increase opportunities for paid employment, both of which reduce unemployment. In addition, tertiary education provides human capital that enables graduates to achieve increased level of productivity, which leads to earning more income than lower educated people in both paid employment and self-employment career. Unfortunately, graduates face financial related challenges, which constrain them from undertaking self-employment endeavours. The results of this study suggest that graduate unemployment can only be eliminated if students are provided with the right skills and knowledge to match the requirement of the employment market. Furthermore, the study suggests that graduates should be assisted financially at the initial stage of their self-employment activities.

Résumé :
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2014
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The impact of the econom ic turndown in 2008, brought sustainability issues to the forefront of public debate as the realities of climate change, and society’s response to it, gain higher visibility. As a result, t he green economy is gaining global traction as it is evident i n South African policy frameworks and investment. In this new environment, human or social capital is fast becoming the foundation of sustainable businesses. The pursuit of green jobs is seen as a key economic driver in the 21st century, creating a green pathway out of poverty. Shifting the economy from business as usual to a low carbon, resource efficient, resilient and inclusive sustainable economy will involve large scale investment in new technologies, equipment, buildings, and infrastructure, research and development and skills training and could thus be a major stimulus for much-needed employment (UNEP, 2008:3). The focus of this to study is to investigate, career opportunities for graduates of the programme in Sustainable Development, offered by the School of Public Leadership (SPL) at Stellenbosch University. The question is asked if future careers in sustainability-related fields are secured for these graduates. The problem statement was formulated to determine possible challenges that graduates might face from advancing in their careers. I have aimed to address this problem by exploring the prospects for employment in various sustainability-related fields. The re search objectives are to: a) attain clarity regarding graduates` understanding and awareness of available careers in sustainability-related fields; b) to investigate attempts, tools and processes through which graduates could develop careers in the sustainability-related fields; and c) To confirm the graduates` employment status, pre-and post-graduation. My study will aim to demonstrate that more research needs to be conducted related to career guidance to prepare a new workforce, with skills and career knowledge to enter career opportunities in green economy.

Larey, Desiree Pearl. « Focus schools and vocational education in the Western Cape ». Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/20023.

Résumé :
Thesis (MEd)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The main goal of this thesis was to better understand the role and function of the focus schools project in the Western Cape, to explore the reasons for their emergence in 2006, and to locate the policy initiative within historical and policy developments around vocationalism in the province. The study focused in particular on how one focus school experienced the roll-out of this policy decision, what the impressions of the learners and educators at a case study school were, and also how officials attached to the Western Cape Education Department described the emergence and implementation of the policy. Further goals of the study were to contextualize the policy process that led to this form of provision, and to conceptualise how this fitted in with educational development issues in the province. A brief backdrop of historical developments and its role in the education of communities in the Western Cape, particularly the coloured community, was provided to contextualize the policy initiative. The main contribution of the thesis is its description and analysis of policy documents and the viewpoints of a range of people connected to a new provincial initiative, focus schools, with regard to what a focus school is meant to achieve and how it is experienced. Data was collected by studying a range of unpublished policy documents, and to link these to interviews conducted with departmental and district officials, educators, learners, and one principal in relation to one case study school. The study showed that focus schools were regarded mainly as a form of vocational education provision to accommodate the desire of the Western Cape economy for intermediate skills in the mid-2000s. It illustrated how the focus school band has run its own unique course within educational structures since 2006, and highlighted how they have fulfilled their goal of getting more learners from historically disadvantaged communities into further study or into positions that better serve the needs of the local economy. The thesis suggested that the policy focus of getting learners into higher education seemed misguided and contrary to the goals of vocational education provision. This policy confusion was further highlighted by learners interviewed in the study who noted that they would have preferred to follow a more academically-based path. Few believed they could either get to university (as claimed by policy officials) or into a viable employment poisition by following a vocational route at school.

This study intend in analyzing the factors that influent the students when they choose a business management as their graduation course. The starting point is a review on the existing vocationalguidance theories as well as the studies that approach the same theme. The factors were classified and groued, resulting in the following segmentation: social factors, psychological factors and economic factors. During the analysis of the mutual cause-and-effect relationship among the factors, three models was defined, each one based in the respective factor. The adequacy of the models was tested trough a field research with258 students of business management graduation courses from four private universities located at Sao Paulo State. A structural eauqtion modeling (SEM) was used as the parameters of the models were defined trough an estimation proces. According to the defined criteria, the results show that social factors are the most adjusted factors (to the model) that explain the decision process in the vocation choice.
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The study is divided into two major parts: a theoretical research of two knowledge transferring methods headed by a discussion on knowledge and learning, and a case study analysing the presence of mentoring within traditional apprenticeships at carpenter workshops in Germany. The two methods on knowledge transfer are mentoring and the cognitive apprenticeship model, whereas each of the models is discussed in terms of the individual characteristics present and techniques used within the relationship of the parties present. In the past, both methods have been established in modern business organisations to enhance knowledge creation, transfer and archiving though many approaches have failed due to mistakes in the basic conceptual interpretation or lack of support. The question, which underlined this research project, focused on whether positive aspects of the methods or the methods themselves have already been incorporated in the organisational culture of small to medium sized enterprises. Thus, the research explored whether knowledge transferral methods, and particularly mentoring, is apparent within the organisational structure of small to medium sized enterprises and in Germany and whether the size of the company has an influence on the presence of mentoring aspects in the businesses. With particular focus on mentoring, the research has shown that no aspects relating to mentoring have been incorporated. Even though some answers pointed to a correlation in between business size and the incorporation of aspects, no real correlation could be proven.

This study presents insights on career management in the creative and cultural industries in Scotland with detailed exploration into practices and strategies employed by cultural workers. Following a phenomenological approach, the study has used subjective data of individual career experiences and interpreted them into objective patterns of career management. Using qualitative research interviews and thematic analysis, the doctoral study explored the career management experiences of thirty six cultural workers and identified particular strategies adopted in the self-management of precarious and unpredictable careers. Employment in the creative and cultural industries is with precarious which constitutes a specific environment for career management and career progression. Not enough is known about the ways in which cultural workers manage their careers in these circumstances. The aim of this study was to understand the realities of contemporary career management in the creative and cultural industries and to identify particular practices and strategies in which creative careers might be managed. Beyond the scholars in this field, this research is of interest to cultural workers, policy makers in the creative and cultural industries more broadly and higher education institutions preparing graduates for work in the creative and cultural industries. The empirical evidence gathered can better inform cultural workers of effective career management strategies and propose policy interventions that would facilitate effective career management and career management education. Key findings focus on the use of online / social media within creative careers and how such activity takes place; the development of a new harmony between art and economic logics and the application of development based career strategies in creative careers, with cultural workers being more managerial than they even recognise themselves. The findings from this study offers confirmation to what is already known about careers in the creative and cultural industries, greater depth and detail to what is already known and extend understanding about the relationship disconnect between individual career Career Management in the Creative and Cultural Industries Abstract management strategies and the policies designed to support cultural workers – policies which focus on growth and development of the industry but not those individuals who make up the industry. Exploration of the phenomenon of career management in the creative and cultural industries requires further research, which could include: alternative methodologies to elicit perceptions based on the findings from this study, deeper exploration into both the difference in career management within the creative and cultural industries and the emerging relationship between art and economic logic.

Résumé :
The aim of this thesis is to extend sport career transition knowledge by developing and evaluating a psycho-educational curriculum for sport career transition practitioners. Study 1 provides an extensive overview of organisational intervention programmes for sport career transition, as well as of training and development programmes for sport career transition practitioners from 19 countries worldwide. The purpose of Study 1 was to examine the following five features of sport career transition organisational intervention programmes and training and development programmes for sport career transition practitioners: 1) At the government level, which organisation is responsible for the delivery of sport career transition organisational intervention programmes? 2) What is the typical strategy of sport career transition organisational intervention programmes? 3) Which activities and events are included in sport career transition organisational intervention programmes? 4) Who is responsible for the delivery of sport career transition organisational intervention programmes? and 5) Do sporting organisations have training and development programmes for sport career transition practitioners? Findings from Study 1 were used to inform Study 2 and to supplement the literature review. According to the literature, training and development programmes for sport career transition practitioners remain scarce, while the number of sport career transition organisational intervention programmes is gradually increasing. The purpose of Study 2 was to develop and evaluate a novel psycho-educational curriculum for sport career transition practitioners. There were three stages of development and evaluation: (1) content development, (2) curriculum design and (3) curriculum evaluation. To achieve the goal of Study 2, a focus group and a two-round Delphi method were implemented. The final version of the psycho-educational curriculum is presented in Chapter 5. The purpose of Study 3 was to test a key aspect of the psycho-educational curriculum developed in Study 2 concerning 38 competences of sport career transition practitioners. A curriculum package consisting in the key parts from the overall curriculum was developed for Study 3. The findings revealed that the curriculum package positively affected the confidence of the study participants in 38 competences concerning sport career transition. This demonstrates that the curriculum is effective for the development of sport career transition practitioners, as the study participants exhibited greater confidence on all four factorsDual Career Transition Management, Skill Transfer, Social Support, and Career Planningwhen completing the curriculum package. The discussion in Chapter 7 focuses on both the theoretical and practical implications of the research, limitations and future research directions. In conclusion, the findings presented here deepen the knowledge of sport career transition in the areas of organisational intervention programmes for high performance athletes and training and development programmes for sport career transition practitioners. In addition, a novel psycho-educational curriculum for sport career transition practitioners is developed and evaluated.

Résumé :
The arrival of the Big Data era has become a major topic of discussion in many sectors because of the premises of big data utilizations and its impact on decision-making. It is an interdisciplinary issue that has captured the attention of scholars and created new research opportunities in information science, business, heath care, and many others fields. The problem is the Big Data is not well defined, so that there exists confusion in IT what jobs and skill sets are required in big data area. The problem stems from the newness of the Big Data profession. Because many aspects of the area are unknown, organizations do not yet possess the IT, human, and business resources necessary to cope with and benefit from big data. These organizations include health care, enterprise, logistics, universities, weather forecasting, oil companies, e-business, recruiting agencies etc., and are challenged to deal with high volume, high variety, and high velocity big data to facilitate better decision- making. This research proposes a new way to look at Big Data and Big Data analysis. It helps and meets the theoretical and methodological foundations of Big Data and addresses an increasing demand for more powerful Big Data analysis from the academic researches prospective. Essay 1 provides a strategic overview of the untapped potential of social media Big Data in the business world and describes its challenges and opportunities for aspiring business organizations. It also aims to offer fresh recommendations on how companies can exploit social media data analysis to make better business decisions—decisions that embrace the relevant social qualities of its customers and their related ecosystem. The goal of this research is to provide insights for businesses to make better, more informed decisions based on effective social media data analysis. Essay 2 provides a better understanding of the influence of social media during the 2016 American presidential election and develops a model to examine individuals' attitudes toward participating in social media (SM) discussions that might influence their decision in choosing between the two presidential election candidates, Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton. The goal of this research is to provide a theoretical foundation that supports the influence of social media on individual's decisions. Essay 3 defines the major job descriptions for careers in the new Big Data profession. It to describe the Big Data professional profile as reflected by the demand side, and explains the differences and commonalities between company-posted job requirements for data analytics, business analytics, and data scientists jobs. The main aim for this work is to clarify of the skill requirements for Big Data professionals for the joint benefit of the job market where they will be employed and of academia, where such professionals will be prepared in data science programs, to aid in the entire process of preparing and recruiting for Big Data positions.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this mini-thesis I share the action research that I undertook at the school where I teach. This research was an attempt to improve my practice in career guidance, a sub-division of Life Orientation. The need for a study of this nature was developed out of my experiences with matriculants who appear to be confused about their future careers they intent pursuing. It appeared that they lacked the capacity to do self-planning and did not really comprehend how to plan their future careers. In reflection on career guidance, in general, and my own teaching practice in particular, I came to the conclusion that there is a real problem in terms of the effectiveness of career guidance and that I, in my technicist attitude towards policies of the education department, perhaps unconsciously, became part of the maintenance of a fruitless practice. Although I dutifully carry out the curriculum according to the required education policies, there remain an uncertainty and a concern regarding the practicality surrounding career guidance and more so when it comes to disadvantaged students from rural areas. This compelled me to do some introspection about the way I was teaching and involving the learners in my career guidance classes. This introspection lead me to the realisation that the instrumentalist and technicist way of teaching (‘talk and chalk’ method of teaching) and my endeavour to finish my content and assessment tasks within a certain prescribed timeframe, were at odds with creative career guidance teaching. My classroom practice was trapped in the old methods, and I was caught up in the old traditional ways while teaching a 21st-century learner. In an effort to address the above-mentioned issues of concern, I address the following critical questions, namely: - How can career guidance be used as a tool to improve the life skills of learners from a poor rural school? - How can I improve my classroom practice? In Chapter one I explore my background and provide reasons why I got involved in this project. In my literature review, I suggest that the principles of the National Curriculum Statement Grades R–12 (2012) and the outcomes that the learners have to achieve have certain implications for classroom practice. This is in line with Cuseo’s (1996) view that basic education is guaranteed by not only giving form to the structure of the curriculum, but also to what happens between learners and teachers in the classroom. A detailed description of the two action research projects that were undertaken with Grade eleven learners at my school is given in Chapters four and five. In the final chapter of this thesis, I reflect on the research engaged in the classroom and I also reflect on the future of teachers as researchers. I believe that any attempt to improve the education and conditions of our rural and disadvantaged schools would go a long way in addressing the inequities prevalent in our society.

abstract: While credit rating agencies use both forward-looking and historical information in evaluating a firm's credit risk, the role of forward-looking information in their rating decisions is not well understood. In this study, I examine the association between management earnings guidance news and future credit rating changes. While upward earnings guidance is not informative for credit rating changes, downward earnings guidance is significantly and positively associated with both the likelihood and speed of rating downgrades. In cross-sectional analyses, I find that downward guidance is especially informative in two important circumstances: (i) when a firm's current credit rating is overly optimistic compared to a model predicted rating, and (ii) when the relevance or reliability of alternative information sources is lower. In addition, I find that downward guidance is associated with lower future cash flows, as well as a higher volatility of future cash flows. Overall, the results are consistent with credit rating agencies incorporating voluntary bad news disclosures into their decisions about whether and when to downgrade a firm.

Résumé :
The purpose of the study was to determine the management of learner counselling at LHS. The little information on career counselling in post-apartheid South Africa as most information dates back to the Bophuthatswana era. Data was gathered through questionnaires and interviews. These were used to determine management of student counselling in the areas of: number of learners in class, availabilityof career counselling, and the importance of career counselling, parental involvement and departmental and community involvement in the education of learners. The response from the sample under study indicated that there is no active participation in the management of career counselling by all the stakeholders. Departmental involvement, is urgent, as more learners leave school, not ready and unarmed with relevant and important information. It is recommended that career counselling be a compulsory subject. The introduction of career counselling mechanisms will guide the school counsellor in identifying the needs of the learners, thus eliminating problems that may be encountered. This can be attained by the creation of more posts for school counselllors by the Department of Education. The counsellor at times lacks the necessary information, training and support from the education department to guide learners. A lack of career centers further exacerbates poor counselling in schools.

Résumé :
This research sets out to identify (i) the perceptions of careers advisers and other relevant stakeholders about current career management practices provided for secondary school careers advisers by the NSWDET and (ii) the current and future career issues faced by NSWDET careers advisers in view of social political and economic changes in the last decade in so far as they impact upon their careers. In this thesis, career management is conceptualised as a process which involves employees becoming aware of their own interests, values, strengths and weaknesses, obtaining information about job opportunities within their organisation (and by implication, with other potential employers), identifying career goals and creating plans to achieve such goals. As such, the process is not exclusively driven by the employer, but is rather a joint responsibility. However to discover what the career management stakeholders viewed about the career management received by NSWDET secondary careers advisers, it was necessary to focus on what this employer had provided. To establish a set of criteria to discover the types and support for such career management, the schema of career management interventions provided by Arnold’s (1997) see Table 1.1, was used as an investigative tool. The conclusions reached are that there remain unmet challenges for the career management of secondary school careers advisers and indeed to the careers of these practitioners in NSWDET schools. An important outcome of this thesis will be to create a set of recommendations to guide the future course of managing the careers of these secondary school careers advisers.

Walters, Irma Elzette. « Self-knowledge for career management : an educational psychological model ». Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/7697.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
D.Ed.
The goal of this study is to design a model that could guide and direct the educational psychologist in the facilitation of the client's self-knowledge for career management: The rationale of this study is based on the fact that previously the educational psychologist, as career counsellor, had to counsel within specific limiting boundaries. In terms of career counselling this meant that he simply guided the client to make the correct career choice. Career management was not considered by the educational psychologist as part and parcel of career counselling. The need for career management is reinforced by the view of the Gauteng Education Department that education in South Africa is seen as a process of lifelong education. Career counselling should therefore be conducted in such a way that it ensures lifelong dividends. Self-knowledge can be seen as the basis for career management. The educational psychologist should possess specific knowledge and skills in order to facilitate self-knowledge in such a way that a client is empowered to manage his own career in a changing career market. The main purpose of this study will therefore be: the, development and description of a model that could serve as a guide to the educational psychologist in the facilitation of a client's self-knovViedge in order to empower him to do career management. To be able to meet this goal the following sub-goals are set: the exploration and description of the concepts necessary for self-knowledge in order to do career management by means of a literature study; the generation of the provisional model; the evaluation and the refinement of the provisional model on the basis of recommendations made by the model development experts and peer group • the writing of a manual for educational psychologists regarding the operationalisation of the final model. The execution of the development of the model will be discussed in three phases. During phase one the model is developed and described by means of a literature research. The model is functional, therefore the survey list of Dickoff, James and Wiedenbach (1968:435), is used to identify and classify the concepts in the study. A concept analysis of the central concept "self-knowledge for career management" is performed and a theoretical definition is:formulated. During phase one the main concepts and their relationships to the central concept are described in the form of relational statements. These statements do not only highlight the relationship between the concepts, but also lay a sound foundation for the conceptual framework on which the provisional model "self-knowledge for career management" is based. During phase two the provisional model is evaluated and refined by model development experts and the peer group. According to the r,ecommendations and the relevant critique, the model is refined and the final model described. The final model describes the structure of the model, as well as the process to facilitate self-knowledge for career management. During phase three a manual is written on how to operationalise the model, which serves as a guideline to the educational psychologist.

Résumé :
D. Tech. Interior Design
Work integrated learning at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) is an integrated approach to teaching and learning for the attainment of qualifications. It specifically encourages and enhances learning partnerships between all role players, which include students, university staff and employers. The university perceives itself to be in partnership with commerce and industry in the development and delivery of high-level human resources who will uniquely contribute to the South African economy. It is important to acknowledge that the Interior Design management model for work integrated learning will in future form a division of the management practice at the TUT. The regular communication, exchange of information and asking for support in connection with a design problem or knowledge about a finishing material, between the Interior Design departments and the industry is of vital importance to support and distribute new design drawing techniques, new innovative design ideas and sharing knowledge with students and staff alike. The specific demands in the industry determined the management model for work integrated learning for the Interior Design qualification. Work integrated learning lies between the curriculum of Interior Design and the workplace. It is, therefore, important to develop a thoughtful management model to develop the area in-between the curriculum and the knowledge the students absorb during studying the Interior Design qualification and the real-life, work-based placement in the industry.

Résumé :
The construction industry is an important role player in any country. Past research has shown that the industry suffers from a poor image which, inter alia, resulted in a lack of new entrants. A quarterly survey conducted by the Construction Industry Development board (CIDB) showed that over 50% of survey respondents recorded a severe shortage in skilled labour. The objective of this study was to determine how young people viewed the construction industry, how employers and employees within the industry viewed construction, whether companies were involved in promoting the industry, and if the industry was attractive as a career choice to high school students. The literature reviewed stated that the construction industry was globally suffering from a poor image and critical shortage of skills. The literature provided the researcher with a number of factors which contributed to the industry’s poor image. These factors were empirically tested against the opinions of high school students and employers and employees in construction via questionnaires. Interviews were conducted with industry professionals who had over 20 years of industry experience. The interviews allowed insight into the image and what has made it poor. It also indicated that there was little being done to promote careers in the industry. The industry did have a poor image from the perceptions of high school students, employers and employees. Very few students indicated a willingness to work in construction. The lack of new entrants, shortage of skilled labour and lack of promotion were not conducive to a sustainable industry. The dissertation ends with recommendations for addressing the issue of the image from the perspective of high school students and recommendations for further research.

The vocational exploration has been a concept studied among adolescents, young adults and adults (Faria, 2008; Faria & Taveira, 2006; Faria, Taveira & Saavedra, 2008; Mota, 2010; Pinto, 2010; Silva, 2008; Silva, 2010) . Aiming to contribute to understanding of vocational exploration in another sample type, including inmates, a study was conducted in which we assess the competences of vocational exploration in a sample of 58 inmates serving time in a prison of the regional center of the country. A questionnaire was used Career Exploration Survey (Taveira & Silva, 2010) to assess the beliefs of exploration, exploration behaviors and reactions to the exploration. It analyzes the different subscales of the questionnaire and the relationship between these and sociodemographic variables. The results point towards that age and duration of imprisonment act as hindering the reintegration into the labor market and occupation of professional position preferred. The age proved to be a predictor of exploratory behavior, and the civil status proved to be a predictor of stress levels in the target population.

Résumé :
Human resources are the most important assets of any health system. In recent years it has been increasingly recognised that improving the performance of health personnel should be at the core of any sustainable solution to health system performance. However, it is widely acknowledged that health systems are not producing the desired output of health interventions due to factors such as insufficient skilled and experienced health personnel, demotivated health personnel, lack of management skills, poor working conditions and environment, and inadequate remuneration. This study explores the factors that affect performance of nurses in Namibia with the aim of providing a management framework for improving the performance of professional nurses. The study followed a quantitative research approach using an explorative descriptive design. A survey method using questionnaires was applied. The reaction to the study was positive as a response rate of 75.8% was obtained. Data analysis included identifying and comparing existence or absence of factors using the SSPS package. The target population included all professional nurses in Oshana, Otjozondjupa and Khomas regions. Baseline results revealed various factors which affect performance. The study revealed that hospitals currently have deficiencies in human resource management aspects such as recognition of employees who perform well, working conditions, implementation of performance appraisal systems, feedback on performance outcomes and management skills. These aspects are strongly associated with level of performance of health personnel. Based on the results, a management framework was proposed. The framework consists of activities for enhancing the nursing profession; strengthening knowledge and expertise, including management skills; improving performance; and generating knowledge through research.

Résumé :
The facilitator model for dual credit offers a way for student to earn directly transcripted credit to colleges and universities, overcoming many barriers faced by other dual credit models. Successful implementation of this model requires high degree of involvement from the cooperating institution. This IRB approved qualitative case study explored the needs of five teacher facilitators in both summer professional development and on-going support throughout the school year when implementing a facilitator model for dual credit with open-ended design coursework. Code-recode and axial coding techniques were applied to over 90 hours of transcribed data, artifacts, and observations from a seven month period to find emerging themes and offer recommendations for implementation.

Summaries in Afrikaans and English
Education today stands before the comprehensive task to empower our youth through appropriate guidance and training to enter the job market as entrepreneurs. Teachers are increasingly put to the task to act as facilitators in their guidance of the youth to adapt more effectively to changing circumstances, new technology and information. Within this context, education directed to entrepreneurship forms one of the most timely issues that education should address. Although the provision of education directed to entrepreneurship has been described as a cross curricular concern within the new Norms and standards for teacher education it does not provide in the need for a comprehensive strategy to develop entrepreneurship in education. In an answer to this deficiency, this study is directed to develop a proposed implementation strategy to enhance entrepreneurship in education. In the course of this investigation it was needed to thouroughly account with concerns such as: • the role and significance of entrepreneurship within the South African school context; • factors which underlie entrepreneurial success or failure; • the development of a positive entrepreneurial attitude and entrepreneurial skills and • local and foreign initiatives to enhance entrepreneurship within the school context. Résumé :
Studies relating to recent curriculum changes implemented by SAICA and CIMA with an increased focus on pervasive skills are limited. The problem addressed in this study related to the challenge faced by ODL accounting education institutions to deliver practice-ready accounting graduates. This study explored accounting educators’ and students’ perception of whether pervasive skills can be developed effectively through the use of case studies in an ODL environment. The study aimed to determine whether ODL accounting departments should introduce a dedicated case study-based module as part of their curriculum. The perceived level at which case studies should be introduced, challenges and the benefits of case studies in light of their pervasive skills development potential were considered in an ODL environment. The study revealed that the case study-based approach is effective and that a staggered approach to introducing case studies in existing accounting-related modules tailored for different difficulty levels, would be appropriate.

Résumé :
The serious shortage of social workers (nationally) caused by their exodus from the profession at an alarming rate and the resultant classification of social work as a "scare skill" served as motivation for this research project into retention strategies to retain social workers for the profession. A qualitative research approach and an explorative, descriptive and contextual research design was employed to conduct semi-structured interviews with 15 purposely selected participants in the geographically defined boundaries of the Northern Free State and Gauteng. Tesch's (in Creswell, 1994) and Guba's models (in Krefting, 1991) aided the processes of data collection and verification, respectively. The research findings uncovered: general and specific reasons for the social workers' exodus, feelings and emotional reactions of social workers subsequent to the early exodus from the profession, and retention proposals to retain social workers. Based on the findings, recommendation directed to practice, education, policy and further research, were made.
