Del Sole, Francesco. « The Architectural Illusion of Edoardo Tresoldi : The Reconstruction of the Basilica of Siponto ». ATHENS JOURNAL OF ARCHITECTURE 7, no 2 (2 mars 2021) : 257–74. http://dx.doi.org/10.30958/aja.7-2-2.

Résumé :
The Ministry of Tourism commissioned Edoardo Tresoldi in 2016 to restore the Basilica of Siponto (Puglia, Italy), of which only ruins remain. The project is obtained through metal wefts that intertwine in the air presumably reconstructing the original environments: it is an example of creative restoration. This essay aims to examine the genesis of this artwork that has rekindled the debate on the usefulness of this type of restoration, introduced for the first time by Cesare Brandi (1906-1988) and Renato Bonelli (1911-2004) who gave rise to a critical discussion on the role that restoration must play in reconstructing the original spaces of a lost monument. Creative restoration tends to include in the concept of “restoration” all those actions of reconstruction necessary to restore “truth” to the lost monument in order to guarantee its enjoyment, making the “evocative fantasy” take over. Faced with an architecture that has now lost its face, the added value of Tresoldi’s creative restoration will be highlighted, which is not only the reconstruction of the Basilica but the possibility, through the wire mesh that generates transparency, to understand the monument not only as a historical document but as an artwork that needs to be experienced aesthetically, safeguarding the genius loci, making the site a place to be rediscovered in its link with the territory.

Résumé :
At the dawn of the Third Millennium, philosophy is at an important crossroads in its role as paideia—philosophy educating humanity. A major challenge for philosophy today is to mediate the emergmg science-religion dialogue, and enhance understanding of the relationship between science, ethics, and faith. Curiously, the methodological dilemmas and thorny issues of demarcation between science and religion reflect a new awareness regarding metascientific questions posed by science itself. We are at the threshold of a new Golden Age of scientific discoveries and faith-informed, interdisciplinary, and liberal learning interconnecting once more all areas of knowledge with ethics and faith. The likely key to new discoveries is an interdisciplinary approach seeking interrelatedness between all phenomena. This means also that the restoration of philosqphy in the classic sense as sophia or the love of wisdom can only be achieved within the larger framework of dialogue among all disciplines in the quest for truth.

Résumé :
Conservation science is born of an inherent conflict. On one hand it is based in science, an objective, value-free search for truth that leads to general laws, with no a priori desire for particular outcomes. On the other hand it is clearly driven by value–laden goals related to making the human–nature relationship an enduring one. In contrast to an objective science, particular outcomes – such as preservation of biodiversity and protection or restoration of functioning ecosystems – are clearly pursued in conservation. The result is a sometimes uncomfortable merging of two human endeavours – one objective and one value-laden – that are inherently antagonistic and can result in tension. To make this tension creative, rather than destructive, we need to understand how both components are necessary and synergistic in forming a complete conservation science.

Résumé :
Background: The Project Creative Conservation was developed at the Conservation and Restoration Laboratory / Polytechnic Institute of Tomar (IPT) as a form to recover, preserve and show in a new way industrial remnants and derelicts, complying with well-defined criteria for collection and selection of those fragments. As a new concept, it needed to be experimented, so students were involved in its practice, which enabled theory demonstrations and maintained a dynamic university learning atmosphere. Purpose: This paper presents the challenges posed to three Conservation and Restoration teachers: different ways to explain new and controversial information, engaging students for the Creative Conservation concept, developing practical extra work, learning and improving hands-on skills, and to practice team-work within a Conservation Laboratory and a Museum environment. Methods: A series of three different workshops were designed as learning tools to allow students to develop conservation skills, discuss problem solving and practice “out of the box” thinking, under the Project Creative Conservation, within the specialties of ceramics, tiles, metal, plastics and paper remnants preservation. It was also provided the chance to create different exhibition methods, installation and exhibition display. Results: A good percentage of students were enthusiastic and complied with the conservation challenges posed by teachers and by remnants themselves. The fragments were properly preserved and differently displayed in exhibitions. Conclusions: The IPT conservation teacher’s competencies and enthusiasm towards teaching a different concept within a practical frame enabled students to broad their view in the conservation field and widen the classical approach to conservation and restoration.

Résumé :
The field of biophilia focuses on the innate connection between humans and nature, seeking to promote well-being and quality of life. With this definition in mind, a literature review was undertaken to investigate its contributions to stimulating sustainability in creative projects. Therefore, the descriptors “biophilia” and “sustainability” were used to search the Scopus database from 2003 to 2020. After applying multiple filters, 22 articles were identified covering the themes of urban green spaces, urban biodiversity, gardens, green infrastructures, management of space resources, sustainable policies and certifications, and community environmental projects. It was concluded that the application of biophilic principles stimulate new projects in design, architecture, and urbanism that provide opportunities for the “restoration” of the body and mind, and that can also converge with sustainable aspects. Investigations in other databases are suggested for further understanding the subject, namely in the Brazilian scenario. Key words: biophilia, bioinspiration, sustainability, regenerative design, creative projects

Résumé :
Abstract Dating violence against adolescent women can devastate their health and long-term quality of life. While high school programs have been developed to address this worldwide epidemic, somatic antidotes are still not widely utilized despite evidence from the psychophysiology of relational violence trauma that there is an inextricable link between the body and mind and effective recovery requires a holistic approach. Creative dance, derived from dance education, can support female adolescent trauma victims of dating violence to reconnect with physical, mental, and emotional experiences that were severed during traumatic exposure. This qualitative arts-based case study narratively explores one adolescent woman’s experience of creative dance as an intervention for survivors of dating violent relationships. Conceptually, I draw from dance education, Authentic Movement, and Amber Gray’s Restorative Movement Psychotherapy. A feminist lens is utilized in an attempt to address calls to action from previous DMT researchers to tackle oppressive structural forces and increase activism in dance/movement therapy. Findings show that inner-directed dance can therapeutically facilitate restoration after trauma by recovering the social engagement system and decision-making capacity, reducing social isolation, and increasing bodily self-awareness, and self-esteem.

Résumé :
Beginning with the influential readings by Jacques Lacan and Jacques Derrida, poststructuralist fascination with Edgar Allan Poe's detective tales has treated them as fables of analytical method and exposed them as posing an insoluble challenge to totalizing frameworks of interpretive analysis. These studies overlook an excised paragraph from Poe's first detective tale in which Poe displays the debt his model of analysis owes to historical sources. This essay discovers the origins of Poe's model of analysis by recovering its discursive context and argues that the poststructuralist conclusions are anticipated in part by Poe's deliberate attempts to translate that model into narrative. This model, inherited from scientific debates in Renaissance history, defines analysis as comprised of two reciprocal processes—the process of resolution and the process of composition. The first part of this essay addresses the original first paragraph of “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” (1841) and the definition of analysis that its restoration enables. The discoveries there lead to a reading of “The Man of the Crowd” (1841) as a failed first attempt to translate the dynamic processes of resolution and composition into a narrative system. By recovering a first paragraph that the poststructuralist criticism misses, this study finds “The Man of the Crowd” central to Poe's strategies of narrative deferral and yields an important pre-history of the deconstructive critical aporia that is their legacy.

There is evidence of the value of individual creative arts (art, drama, music, etc.) in helping people to cope with bereavement. However, there is a gap in the research on the effectiveness of the intentional, combined use of creative arts activities in bereavement support group intervention for adults. This article describes an exploratory study which assessed the effectiveness of using creative arts activities in an eight session support group intervention. A waiting list, randomized control trial supplemented by limited qualitative data was used. Evidence was found that the intervention did help participants’ ability to move between loss and restoration coping when they attended at least six of the eight sessions. However, the use of creative arts activities appears to be more suitable for some people than for others.

Résumé :
The relentlessly growing relationship between tourism and creativity contributes to the search for alternatives to the development of the creative economy. The combination of concepts such as creativity and tourism has become a common diversification strategy, especially in the field of cultural tourism around the world. The creation and introduction of new events and festivals, the restoration of old buildings and the addition of animation to static attractions have become commonplace. Tourist destinations are looking for quick ways to become special and unique in the global economy, and therefore increasingly seek assistance from the creative industries. It is worth noting that architecture, as a variable phenomenon, and event tourism are of the most important cultural catalysts for the generation of originality and identity of a local area and, as a result, increased interest on the part of creative people and tourists. Next, the development of the cultural sector is directly proportional to the growth of the importance of digital technologies, which deserves attention from the authorities, emphasizing intellectual property rights. The Government of Ukraine has recognized the potential scale of the industry’s contribution to the national economy and has taken concrete steps to ensure its further growth. In particular, following global trends, Ukraine has integrated the cultural and creative dimension into its political program, including the political plan «Long-term strategy for the development of Ukrainian culture – strategy of reforming». In addition, the sector is identified as a priority in the framework political document – the Export Strategy of Ukraine. Advertising, crafts, design, film industry, fashion, performing arts and visual arts were singled out as key drivers of creating additional added value and producing innovations in the sector, which will contribute to the development of small and medium-sized enterprises and entrepreneurship in general. The concept of balanced development «Ukraine 2030» is aimed at achieving 10% of annual economic growth and determines that the development of the creative economy is one of the key mechanisms for sustainable development.

Немалую роль в успехе ревитализации Канадзава сыграл также выход города на мировую арену, достигнутый благодаря участию в международной сети Творческих городов ЮНЕСКО. The article is devoted to the analysis of historical Kanazawa town complex experience that was successful thanks to the longtime considerable initiative of municipality implying several original strategies. Some of them are: the historical architecture restoration based on the local specialist education, modern construction of unique design, creative modernization of local crafts, creation of “Art village” - the complex of cheap hired exhibition and auditorium spaces for international and local activities. Significant step in Kanazawa revitalization success was also entering in UNESCO Creative Cities network that helped the town to achieve an international level of collaboration.

Résumé :
A half century has elapsed since the appointment of an official body, the Nature Conservancy, in 1949, and the beginnings of what might be described as the modern nature conservation movement in the UK. Whilst ecologists perceived the 'heritage of wild nature' to be largely the outcome of past land use, and that the nature reserves would have to be managed consciously if their wildlife interest were to be sustained, there was only the most rudimentary understanding of how this might be achieved. Drawing for the most part on projects affecting wetlands, the paper illustrates the early steps taken to bring greater scientific rigour to reserve management. Whilst the potential for habitat restoration was recognized, there was little opportunity for its practice in the intensively-farmed countryside until grant aid was made available for such purpose from the agricultural budget in the 1980s. Where nature conservation had begun to subsume nature preservation, some fifty years ago, notions of 'creative conservation' have similarly encouraged reassessment of the purpose and practice of wildlife-resource management. This time however the challenge is being met in both the wider countryside and the built environment.

Résumé :
Rapid modernization has brought about massive changes in the urban and rural landscapes of China. While many old places and ancient buildings have been pulled down and replaced with more modern alternatives, others have been protected and restored. These include ancient ancestral temples, an important cultural space in China. Previous research has shown how different level governments and rural communities work together to restore ancient temples, but didn’t bring to light artistic and non-government financed and patronized cases of restoration projects. This article adopts a bottom-up perspective to examine a case in Guangzhou how an individual artist transforms an ancient ancestral temple into a new cultural space. Through an ethnographic-style exploration of the practice of restoration, we unfold the interconnections between an individual’s social memory of the past, their love of place, and their enthusiasm for restoration work. Differing from the government’s ‘standardized’ and functionalist restoration of ancestral temples, this case study shows an individual’s emotional and material devotion to transforming a neglected ancestral temple into an eclectic cultural space where the art works are a result of freedom of creative expression.

Résumé :
The essence of the XVth century Renaissance humanism was the apology of the creative person. This idea was completely original then, for during the Antiquity and the Middle Ages, man was thought of as being subject to the immutable laws of Nature. Because of this it is possible to identify Renaissance and humanism, specially in works such as Pico de la Mirandolla’s Oration on the Dignity of Man, which puts personal dignity on the same level than freedom. To Pico the simultaneous restoration of the culture of Antiquity and the praise of the creative person culminates and constitutes the origin of a new myth, that of the learned man whose words reveal his inner being.

This paper examines the types of artwork restoration innovation that museums undertake, and how their knowledge bases influence these innovations. The study is based on a sample derived from a survey of 167 museums in 43 countries, with 90 of the museums having a restoration and conservation department. The sample selected for this paper includes 59 museums from nine countries: South Africa, the United States, Austria, Germany, Norway, Poland, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Two important conclusions can be inferred from the results obtained in this paper. The first is that museums in these nine countries do innovate in the restoration and conservation of artwork. The second is that innovation performance, and the works that museums are able to restore, depend on the combination of symbolic, analytical and synthetic knowledge bases. Keywords: creative industries, innovation, artwork restoration, museums.¿Innovan los museos en la Conservación y Restauración de obras de arte? Résumé :
What role will ubiquitous sensing play in our understanding and experience of ecology in the future? What opportunities are created by weaving a continuously sampling, geographically dense web of sensors into the natural environment, from the ground up? In this article, we explore these questions holistically, and present our work on an environmental sensor network designed to support a diverse array of applications, interpretations, and artistic expressions, from primary ecological research to musical composition. Over the past four years, we have been incorporating our ubiquitous sensing framework into the design and implementation of a large-scale wetland restoration, creating a broad canvas for creative exploration at the landscape scale. The projects we present here span the development and wide deployment of custom sensor node hardware, novel web services for providing real-time sensor data to end user applications, public-facing user interfaces for open-ended exploration of the data, as well as more radical UI modalities, through unmanned aerial vehicles, virtual and augmented reality, and wearable devices for sensory augmentation. From this work, we distill the Networked Sensory Landscape, a vision for the intersection of ubiquitous computing and environmental restoration. Sensor network technologies and novel approaches to interaction promise to reshape presence, opening up sensorial connections to ecological processes across spatial and temporal scales.

Résumé :
Abstract The art of creative expression is a mentally tasking endeavour which requires intense probing of the creator’s inward states. Since writers create in solitude and and engage in dialogic strategies in shaping their imagery, they manifest ‘normal’ neurotic episodes, which are privileged as markers of artistic genius. Despair has thus been acknowledged as a significant feature of the creative imagination. Many writers script out their distressed moods, a paradoxical catharsis, in artistic mentation, that has become a major issue in contemporary studies of scriptotherapy, especially in Europe and North America. Studies of psychotherapy have revealed that the art of re-creating agonizing experiences brings mental restoration to the writer. Due to the emotional commitment and spontaneity required, poetry is clearly a convenient literary genre for the exploration of despondency and melancholic depression. However, this subject of poetry therapy has not been given adequate attention in Nigerian literary scholarship. The present study attempts an exemplary ‘poetic-diagnosis’ of melancholia in Wumi Raji’s Rolling Dreams. The article relies on psychoanalysis, a theory of the mind, deployed for the analysis of the abject imagery of the poems, and on deconstructionist theory, for autonomous and polysemous investigation of the melancholic poetic canvas of the collection.

Résumé :
Introduction: In addition to recognizing and taking into account the vital need for the maintenance and repair of historical structures, this study will focus on their inherent design potential at the intersection of the new and the old. Purpose of the study: The study aims to review the approach to restoring such landmarks as the library in Vyborg and the Arsenal building in the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin. We will also focus on the restoration of more mundane structures. In addition to historical monuments, this study will look at instances when there is no attempt to return the buildings to some idealized version of the past, but instead, the restoration process is used to celebrate the qualities of the buildings’ age in the here and now, and to recognize that they are living, evolving, and constantly changing entities. Methods: The study uses the method of analysis, which we apply to the standard solutions for various purposes and objects, in the form of structural and technological protection of cultural heritage sites during their restoration and adaptation. The use of modern restoration materials and protective structures’ construction technologies will help protect the environment while taking into account LEED, BREEAM, the Energy Star program (the USA), and the GREEN ZOOM standards. Results: We offer selected examples from contemporary practice in Europe, the United States, and Russia to illustrate these approaches to restoration, including two student-led architectural installations that explore the creative intersection between the new and the old. Discussion: Discussing the execution of specific restoration and reconstruction projects reveals the importance of international cooperation in the development of educational strategies and practices in the field of conserving and restoring the cultural heritage. The growing volume of conservation and restoration work is putting pressure on the development of research approaches and methodologies aimed at solving practical problems. At the same time, the restorer must be mindful of continuity with the past when reconstructing the more mundane and utilitarian structures that can benefit from less restrictive approaches to the intersection of the old and the new.

Introduction. The authors emphasize the importance of pre-explosive concentration sensors, that ensure the required fire safety (FS) at fire/explosion hazardous facilities of oil refineries. The authors substantiate the importance of maintenance procedures for first-level alarming devices that are part of automated process control systems (APCS) installed around outdoor facilities of refineries.Theoretical fundamentals. The authors argue that two counter-running subprocesses (destructive and creative (restorative)), that ensure fire safety, can describe a decrease in the efficiency of APCS subsystems in the FS monitoring, as well as their restoration at refinery facilities. The proper maintenance of gas detectors is presented as a discrete creative subprocess. The authors demonstrate a relation between the spatial location of sensors of stationary gas analyzers and the computability of their number, depending on the outdoor facility perimeter.Research results. To mathematically describe the maintenance procedure applied to stationary gas analyzers, the authors assess the dependence between the number of remote detectors, the perimeter of the rectangular outdoor unit, around which they are installed at a refinery, and the prescribed distance between the sensors.Conclusion. This assessment conveys the features of installation of gas detectors of any type depending on their classification based on physical methods of analysis. A conclusion is drawn that the perimeter data can help to calculate the number of rows for the installation of devices, the length of each row, the prescribed number of gas detectors in each row.

Résumé :
Abstract. The restoration work management in cultural heritage presents lots of difficulties according to the context where it takes place. Some of them are the precarious communication network and civil infrastructures, the absence of specialised local labour or sensitized with cultural heritage whom work with or the need to import suitable materials to develop the project correctly. In the case that arises, the churches of San Manuel de Colohete and San Sebastian (Honduras) converge, among others, all of these difficulties involve the heritage management directly. Besides, the planned work budget is usually reduced and needs the implication of all the actors involved in the project. Therefore, the objective of this work is to identify the difficulties around the development of these restoration works and possible solutions that allow them to achieve the purpose planned. The methodology applied for this article is based on the practical experience and the comparative analysis of cases in similar situations. All of it, in a broad context of citizen participation, in international cooperation actions which takes place in remote and inhospitable geographical areas, where any action is complex. The results refer to the way to solve problems that arise and to the solutions, sometimes creative, which finally make possible the cultural heritage restoration.

Résumé :
Recent military base closures and realignments in the United States have opened dozens of former training and testing sites to new uses and priorities. One common transition is to designate these lands as national wildlife refuges. This presents conservation opportunities on hundreds of thousands of hectares previously under military control, but the ecological restoration and subsequent reuse of these lands is complex and fraught with challenges. Unexploded ordnance, soil and water contamination, reinforced structures, and other military remainders exist on many of these sites, and wildlife refuge managers typically receive little funding or training to contend with such relicts. This paper acknowledges some of the real conservation opportunities provided by military-to-wildlife (M2W) refuges, but emphasizes that restoration and conservation measures at these sites remain bounded by physical and sociopolitical constraints. One outcome of these constraints is ‘opportunistic conservation’, where habitat and wildlife goals are shaped or constrained by the lingering presence of prior military uses. Working from case studies and interviews conducted at M2W sites in the United States, this research suggests that opportunistic conservation represents a limited vision for restoration and conservation at these places that also potentially obscures these limitations. At many of these same sites, however, more affirmative opportunistic conservation efforts exhibit creative responses given the conditions that exist.

There is a growing interest in cultural heritage preservation. The notion of HyperHeritage highlights the creation of new means of communication for the perception and data processing in cultural heritage. This article presents the Digital Surface HyperHeritage approach, an academic project to identify the topography of art painting surfaces at the scale at which the elementary information of sensorial rendering is contained. High-resolution roughness and imaging measurement tools are then required. The high-resolution digital model of painted surfaces provides a solid foundation for artwork-related information and is a source of many potential opportunities in the fields of identification, conservation, and restoration. It can facilitate the determination of the operations used by the artist in the creative process and allow art historians to define, for instance, the meaning, provenance, or authorship of a masterpiece. The Digital Surface HyperHeritage approach also includes the development of a database for archiving and sharing the topographic signature of a painting.

Résumé :
The research focused on problems pertaining to restoration of missing parts of rebuilt and reconstructed buildings in Lithuania during the Soviet period. Solutions to such problems very much depended on the amount of available authentic data. The most accurate solution is to use scientific research information, which is based on architectural research or objective visual material. This type of restoration reveals the previous view of a fragment. As a result, application of this method allows restoration of the missing parts and helps rebuilding the destroyed composition. In the case of logical interpretations inspired by scientific research, scientific information is not sufficient for complete restoration of fragments; thus, the missing data is received by mathematical counting. This type of restoration makes it impossible to strongly state the degree, to which the restored information coincides with the previous view and whether it fulfils the rules of international conservation. In the case of a mixture of scientific research and creative interpretation, remains of authentic fragments are insufficient to restore an object. As a consequence, the missing fragment parts are created seeking for the composite unity. Similarly, when creative interpretation is used, authentic information only shows that there has been a specific detail, but there are no data about its exterior, therefore, the lost detail has to be created. The last two ways contradict to the rules of international conservation. It is important to emphasize that observers often concentrate their criticism around the lack of information objectivity. In buildings, it is not possible to distinguish between repetitions of authentic forms and the 20th century interpretations. Thereby, one of the most important values, the cognitive one, loses its meaning.

AbstractThis article examines Tertullian's multifaceted notion of physician and his views of illness and redemptive healing, particularly his arresting re-appropriation of dirt and dishonor as the basis for restoration against Marcion's alleged conception of a pure and spiritual salvation. Tertullian inverts the dominant value paradigm by rendering the shameful and dishonorable circumstances of the flesh as the necessary signifiers of truth and redemption. His creative reconfiguration of healing through filth and shame redraws early Christian discourse on embodiment and corrects facile typologies about purity and impurity, body and soul, incarnation and salvation, and individual and society.

Résumé :
Abstract Historians have begun to think about the emergence of the early modern ‘state’ in complex and creative ways, far from the conventional focus on overweening central bureaucracies. One component of this discourse is the role of criminal law and criminal prosecution, which, it has been argued (particularly by English scholars), assisted state-forming processes by providing a universal interface between ruler and ruled, and by demarcating common patterns of behaviour. This paper attempts to apply these ideas to the case of early modern Scotland—whose decentralised legal system and reputation for judicial barbarity has tended to discourage research—through detailed analysis of the judicial activities of the Privy Council. Focusing on the reigns of Charles II and James VII & II, the paper assesses the Council’s theoretical competence as a criminal court, and also reconstructs its day-to-day activities in terms of the kinds of cases tried, the varieties of punishment imposed, and the use of alternative mechanisms such as judicial commissions. The paper argues that the Restoration Privy Council was clearly able to utilise its judicial powers as a state-building tool, despite the general diffuseness of judicial authority in Scotland. It is suggested, therefore, that the Scottish data confirms the utility of criminal prosecution in early modern projects of state formation, underlining historians’ need to conceptualise the process in broad, multi-faceted terms.

Third paper on the topic. The formation of the restoration project of the Darovoe Museum is reaching a turning point. Bringing the creative laboratory of the museum construction into public space allows the scientific community to influence the process of establishing a new museum of the writer and sets a precedent for transparency in the restoration process. The combination of museum design, natural landscape, and architectural research with the achievements of philologists and historians are forming a new kind of interdisciplinary cooperation between scientists and practitioners. In fact, the process is now facing a conflict, ultimately of axiological nature. The article includes proposals of famous scholars to the General Directorate of the Cultural Heritage for the Moscow Region and the Protocol of the meeting of the section of the Council for the Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation; it presents the contradictions causing conflict. The concept of a natural museum of Dostoevsky’s childhood, defended by the academic community, is winning the right to implement with great effort.

Résumé :
Accepted as part of the methodological structure of restoration, the reconstruction of the work of art, in its widest sense, from architecture to objects of mobile heritage, was legitimised either by the recovery of the memory of the destroyed heritage, or by the need of integrity of the image, with its many connotations. Also, the reconstruction has been assimilated, more or less abusively, with the act of fanciful reconstruction, of creative remaking or anastylosis. Stimulated today by the possibilities of endless, performant reconstitutions, by means of virtual space, reconstruction seems to get further and further away from one of the fundamental principles that governs the existence of heritage: the principle of authenticity understood as indestructible relationship between the image and the historicized matter in which it survived. This article analyses the dramatic destiny of the two monuments which were destroyed during the communist regime, the church of the Cotroceni Palace and the Văcărești monastic ensemble, in relation to the genesis of the concept of conservation-restoration of historical monuments in the Romanian space.

Résumé :
Ecosystem restoration is proposed as one aspect of the transformative changes required to meet global sustainability goals. In the prairie region of Canada, where the widespread and relatively recent conversion of natural ecosystems to farmland displaced Indigenous peoples and made way for a thriving agricultural sector, I propose that ecosystem restoration requires two intertwined transition processes: reorienting worldviews to embrace the social and biophysical contexts of local ecosystems, and taking practical steps to restore ecosystem functioning and integrity. Attention to ecosystem functioning—the relational processes that undergird the desired outcomes—can promote the design and implementation of agricultural landscapes that mimic key features of natural ecosystems while maintaining a mix of land uses. Human ingenuity and thoughtful integration of traditional and scientific knowledge are needed to develop locally adapted land use that supports synergetic relationships within and among farm fields and other landscape features. Integrating social goals into the design of agricultural landscapes can spawn creative solutions but will require a shift toward a more open and collaborative approach, especially regarding the use of privately owned lands.
