Résumé: Cet article prétend analyser les écrits premiers de deux administrateurs-historiens britanniques sur l’archipel malais: Thomas Stanford Raffles et John Crawfurd. L’intérêt de cet article est celui de présenter les prémices du discours ethnologique britannique sur les “races” du monde, à travers quelques travaux de ces deux auteurs, en particulier le deuxième. Puisque John Crawfurd a également étendu sa réflexion sur lesdites races à d’autres exemples que celui des peuples de l’archipel malais, ses écrits donnent un aperçu de l’ampleur géographique des théories racistes du XIXe siècle. Analyser ces discours, fréquemment laissés de côté en milieu académique brésilien, est important pour contribuer à l’élargissement de la discussion sur la notion de races dans différentes époques et contextes.

The British Library has a collection of 8 Southeast Asian Quranic manuscripts which have now been digitized. The Quranic manuscripts were collected from the 19th century until 2012. Initially, colonial philologists paid little attention to Quranic manuscripts and prayer’s books in Arabic. In fact, until the end of the 20th century there were only two copies of the ancient Qur’anic manuscripts there. This article wants to describe the development of the paradigm of British philologists and librarians at the British Library towards the ancient Qur’anic manuscripts of Nusantara. This study focuses on three Quranic manuscripts from the Javanese collection of John Crawfurd and Russel Jones with the code Add 12312, Add12343, and Or16877. These three manuscripts will be analyzed for their characteristics. The data used were sourced from literature review and interviews which were processed descriptively and analytically. The results of this study indicate a process that perceives the philologists and librarians in the British Library towards Quranic manuscripts of Nusantara, from the assumption that the manuscripts are not valuable to be valuable. This article also describes historical data related to the role of John Crawfurd and Russell Jones in tracing the Javanese Quranic manuscripts.

Transcriptions of Central Javanese gamelan melodies published in England in the early nineteenth century by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles and John Crawfurd are recognizably similar to compositions performed today and offer an opportunity to gauge change in an oral tradition. Comparison with modern concordances shows considerable stability in modal practice and the idiom of the rebab, provides evidence of changes in specific pieces, raises questions regarding regional variants and the significance of melodic register, and supports the viability of early repertory lists from other sources as a basis for historical research.

Chinese Muslim community play a role in the history of Islami- zation in Java, so it should be raised "Theory of China" in the history of the entry and development of Islam in the region. So far, the discussion of Islamization theory is always associated with the Middle East /Arab and India only- like pioneer of the theory of Arab/Middle East is Crawfurd, Keijzer, Naimann, de Hollander, including some Indonesia-Malay histo- rians like Hasjmi, al-Attas, Hamka, Djajadiningrat and Mukti Ali. While advocates of the India theory among others are Pijnapel, Hurgronje, Morison, Kern, Winsted, Fatimi, Vlekke, Gonda and Srhrieke. Almost no historians who argue explicitly that the Islamization in Java comes from China. Though both "Theory of India" and the Middle East, especially Saudi Hadramaut aren’t free of weaknesses.

This article investigates how British officials and observers of the Malay Archipelago in the nineteenth century explained the prevalence of piracy in the region, particularly in terms of race and civilization. The writings by, among others, Thomas Stamford Raffles, John Crawfurd, James Brooke and Peter Benson Maxwell on contemporary Malay piracy are analysed. Whereas there was broad agreement among these observers that the alleged lack of civilization on the part of the Malays was a major reason for the prevalence of piracy in the region, there was considerable disagreement about the Malays’ capacity for civilizational progress and improvement. The degree to which the Malays were deemed capable of civilization in turn influenced the policies and measures implemented by the British to suppress piracy, ranging from the promotion of free trade to the wholesale extermination of entire villages and communities of suspected pirates. Criticism from humanitarians and liberals in London against the brutality of the latter tactics, however, led to a more restrained British deployment of violence in the Malay Archipelago from the middle of the nineteenth century.

Debating the arrival of Islam in the archipelago, many historians have their own views and arguments. Arab trade in the archipelago has left very clear traces. This trace is compared as evidence of the early emergence of Islam. Thomas W. Arnold, John Crawfurd, L. W. C Van den Berg and Michael Laffan are figures who have the opinion that Arab traders had an important role in the process of entering Islam in the archipelago. This research is a theoretical study with the concept of library research which reconstructs the thoughts and views of these figures to see the influence of Arab traders in the archipelago. Even in the 2nd century BC Arab traders traded with Sri Lanka. The trading ability of the Arabs then solidified their dominance in the West-Eastern trade world which has intensified since the 7th century AD. Although some experts doubt the ability of Arab traders and their relations in the spread of Islam, Arab trading activities have been able to contribute to the Islamic world in the archipelago.

Between 1946 and 1987, Crawford Productions was a major independent Melbourne producer of radio and television drama, and innovative musical and educational programs. Led by orchestra conductor Hector Crawford, his sister Dorothy Crawford and her son Ian Crawford, Crawford Productions, or simply Crawfords, was influential in developing an ‘Australian consciousness and identity’ through its many successful programs. This dissertation explores several elements of Hector Crawford’s quest to create an ‘Australian consciousness’, including the opportunities he provided for many singers and artists through live musical radio programs. I argue that Dorothy Crawford’s production skills were pivotal throughout this process as well as during the formative years of television. Hector lobbied against the dominance of American television programs and in support of Australian dramatic television content which, I argue, added greatly to a public awareness that television was not portraying Australia’s national traditions and culture. I contend that this awareness helps explain why Crawfords’ television drama series such as Homicide (1964) and Division 4 (1969) were so readily accepted by national audiences. Through employee oral history accounts I demonstrate how Crawfords engendered a collegiate training environment with a ‘get the job done whatever the cost’ attitude. The ensuing employment, training and career opportunities benefited the entire television and film industry and contributed to an evolving ‘Australian consciousness’. This dissertation also examines the rationale behind Melbourne’s third commercial television licence being granted to Ansett Transport Industries and why Crawfords’ bid failed. In response to the existing literature, I argue that the Federal Government was not biased towards Ansett as a ‘business friend’. While Hector Crawford has often been described as the ‘Father of Australian Television’, I argue that his entrepreneurial and business skills alone may have been ineffectual without the contributions of family members and senior staff. I contend that ‘The Family of Australian Television’ is a more accurate epitaph.

Résumé :
The Stiles-Crawford effect (SCE) is the differential effectivity of light entering the eye at different positions in the pupil. Its parameters are directionality (rate of change across the pupil) and peak location in the pupil. Using a spatial light modulation system, I investigated influences of field size, accommodation (focusing), and flicker frequency on the subjectively-measured SCE. SCE directionality increased with increase in field size, while peak location shifted temporally in the pupil with increase in focusing, but the SCE was not affected by a range of flicker frequencies. The field size results support a photoreceptor absorption model of the SCE.

Crawford about the formation and actions of the Sixtieth Tennessee Infantry (Confederate) in Jonesboro during the Civil War, annotate them, and provide an introduction that details the events and people described in the letters. These letters are important because they describe first-hand the process of formation of this Confederate infantry unit in an area of East Tennessee that predominately supported the Union. The letters themselves can be found in the Archives of Appalachia at East Tennessee State University’s Charles C. Sherrod Library.

Background: Mechanical forces either due to accommodation or myopia may stretch the retina and/or cause shear between the retina and choroid. This can be investigated by making use of the Stiles-Crawford effect (SCE), which is the phenomenon of light changing in apparent brightness as it enters through different positions in the pupil. The SCE can be measured by psychophysical and objective techniques, with the SCE parameters being directionality (rate of change across the pupil), and orientation (the location of peak sensitivity in the pupil). Aims: 1. To study the changes in foveal SCE with accommodation in emmetropes and myopes using a subjective (psychophysical) technique. 2. To develop and evaluate a quick objective technique of measuring the SCE using the multifocal electroretinogram. Methods: The SCE was measured in 6 young emmetropes and 6 young myopes for up to 8 D accommodation stimulus with a psychophysical technique and its variants. An objective technique using the multifocal electroretinogram was developed and evaluated with 5 emmetropes. Results: Using the psychophysical technique, the SCE directionality increased by similar amounts in both emmetropes and myopes as accommodation increased, with an increase of 15-20% with 6 D of accommodation. However, there were no significant orientation changes. Additional measurements showed that most of the change in the directionality was probably an artefact of optical factors such as higher-order aberrations and accommodative lag rather a true effect of accommodation. The multifocal technique demonstrated the presence of the SCE, but results were noisy and too variable to detect any changes in SCE directionality or orientation with accommodation. Conclusion: There is little true change in the SCE with accommodation responses up to 6 D in either emmetropes or myopes, although it is possible that substantial changes might occur at very high accommodation levels. The objective technique using the multifocal electroretinogram was quicker and less demanding for the subjects than the psychophysical technique, but as implemented in this thesis, it is not a reliable method of measuring the SCE.

An evaluation of spatial and temporal variation in composition of soil solutions collected from a hydro-toposequence with seasonally saturated soils ranging from Xeralfs to Aqualfs. The sub-catchment is under native eucalyptus and is formed from granite gneiss. The study shows that mineral weathering under eucalypt vegetation contributes substantially to the quantity of elements measured in soil solution with some aeolian salts. Migration of soil solutions to low lying areas promotes dryland salinity in these landscapes.

Notre objectif a été d'analyser l'influence de la variabilité spatio-temporelle de la réflectance des cônes sur le comptage des cônes par imagerie à haute résolution par optique adaptative plein champ, et de proposer des méthodes pour pallier ces difficultés. La première partie des travaux porte sur l'étude de la variabilité temporelle des cônes. Nous avons confirmé la présence d'un phénomène de scintillement des cônes à une fréquence au moins égale à celle de notre système d'acquisition. Nous avons proposé une procédure d'analyse d'images incluant restauration par déconvolution myope, recalage rigide, fusion d'images pour la construction de cartographies de cônes. Nous avons montré que dans le cas des sujets sains, la procédure de fusion d'image permet de rapprocher la mesure de la densité des cônes des références histologiques. La directionalité de la réflectance des cônes est appelée effet Stiles-Crawford optique. Nous en avons identifié une nouvelle manifestation clinique, à travers une étude portant sur l'analyse d'images d'optique adaptative en périphérie de la rétine. Nous avons montré, à travers l'alternance des mosaïques positive/négative, que la réflectance des cônes peut devenir inférieure à celle des bâtonnets. La comparaison avec les données de la tomographie de cohérence optique a montré une forte corrélation de cette commutation avec la couche des segments externes des cônes. Nous avons proposé une procédure d'intégration de la variabilité spatiale pour la construction des cartographies. Cette procédure a été évaluée sur des sujets sains et pathologiques et a montré un gain significatif (en termes de dénombrement des cônes) chez les cas pathologiques
Our objective was to analyze the importance of spatial and temporal variability of the reflectance of cones in counting for adaptive optics high resolution imaging, and propose ways to overcome these difficulties.The first part of the work focuses on the study of the temporal variability of cones. We confirmed the presence of a scintillation phenomenon at a frequency at least equal to that of our acquisition system. We have proposed an image analysis process including restoration by deconvolution, rigid registration, and image fusion for cone mapping. To validate this approach, we conducted a validation test for two deconvolution methods. We have shown that in the case of healthy subjects, the image fusion procedure to bring the measurement of cone density and histological references. The angular variation of cone reflectance is called optical Stiles-Crawford effect. We have identified a new clinical manifestation of this phenomenon, through a study on the analysis of adaptive optics images periphery). We have shown, through the alternation of the positive / negative mosaics, that the reflectance of the cones may become lower than that of rods. Comparison with the data of the optical coherence tomography showed a strong correlation of the switching with the outer segment layer. We then proposed a procedure of integration of spatial variability for cone mapping. This procedure was evaluated in healthy and diseased subjects and showed a significant gain (in terms of cone enumeration) in pathological cases

Stiles and Crawford (1933) showed sixty years ago that the sensitivity of the retina varies with the place of entry of the light in the pupil, and thus with the direction of incidence of light upon the retina. Sensitivity is generally greatest near the centre of the pupil and progressively decreases for more eccentric entry points. This phenomenon is known in the literature as the Stiles-Crawford effect of the first kind (SCE I). The hue shift associated with the SC-effect was discovered by both investigators (Stiles 1937) in a further study of the retinal direction effect. This effect is called the chromatic Stiles-Crawford effect, often also referred to as the Stiles-Crawford effect of the second kind (SCE II).

Field crews recently collected more than 10 years of classification and mapping data in support of the North Coast and Cascades Inventory and Monitoring Network (NCCN) vegetation maps of Mount Rainier (MORA), Olympic (OLYM), and North Cascades (NOCA) National Parks. Synthesis and analysis of these 6000+ plots by Washington Natural Heritage Program (WNHP) and Institute for Natural Resources (INR) staff built on the foundation provided by the earlier classification work of Crawford et al. (2009). These analyses provided support for most of the provisional plant associations in Crawford et al. (2009), while also revealing previously undescribed vegetation types that were not represented in the United States National Vegetation Classification (USNVC). Both provisional and undescribed types have since been submitted to the USNVC by WNHP staff through a peer-reviewed process. NCCN plots were combined with statewide forest and wetland plot data from the US Forest Service (USFS) and other sources to create a comprehensive data set for Washington. Analyses incorporated Cluster Analysis, Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling (NMS), Multi-Response Permutation Procedure (MRPP), and Indicator Species Analysis (ISA) to identify, vet, and describe USNVC group, alliance, and association distinctions. The resulting revised classification contains 321 plant associations in 99 alliances. A total of 54 upland associations were moved through the peer review process and are now part of the USNVC. Of those, 45 were provisional or preliminary types from Crawford et al. (2009), with 9 additional new associations that were originally identified by INR. WNHP also revised the concepts of 34 associations, wrote descriptions for 2 existing associations, eliminated/archived 2 associations, and created 4 new upland alliances. Finally, WNHP created 27 new wetland alliances and revised or clarified an additional 21 as part of this project (not all of those occur in the parks). This report and accompanying vegetation descriptions, keys and synoptic and environmental tables (all products available from the NPS Data Store project reference: https://irma.nps.gov/DataStore/Reference/Profile/2279907) present the fruit of these combined efforts: a comprehensive, up-to-date vegetation classification for the three major national parks of Washington State.

Kate Crawford, autora del libro “Atlas of AI” quien en un artículo de Nature advierte que: “la pandemia de la COVID-19 se está utilizando como pretexto para introducir herramientas de inteligencia artificial no probadas en los lugares de trabajo y las escuelas.” Por lo que, además, insiste en que es hora de regular a los sistemas de inteligencia artificial (en adelante IA) que “interpretan” emociones humanas. En efecto, esta preocupación no es algo nuevo. Desde hace algunos años la mencionada autora junto a diversos investigadores y organizaciones protectoras de derechos humanos han venido advirtiendo sobre el incremento en la comercialización y el uso de sistemas de IA que aseguran poder analizar los movimientos faciales, el tono de voz y los patrones del habla, para interpretar emociones humanas.
