Résumé :
In this study, the transient behavior of a concentrated photovoltaic thermal (CPV/T) system is assessed using one-dimensional mathematical model. The model is based on the heat balance of the concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) solar cells, receiver pipe, thermal fluid, insulation, and the storage tank attached to PV/T system via insulated pipes. The mathematical model was developed and solved using ordinary differential equation solvers in MATLAB® computer program. The interdependence thermo-electric dynamic responses of the CPV/T system were modeled and analyzed by considering two cases such as with and without glass enclosure around the receiver. The electrical and thermal efficiencies are evaluated as the function of enclosure effect, beam solar radiation, and circulating fluid flow rate. For the purpose of model validation, experimental measurements of the CPV/T system were performed. Satisfactory agreements were found between the experimental data and the predicted results. The developed dynamic model is most suitable to predict and evaluate the performance of a point-focused CPV/T system.

Résumé :
The knowledge of the actual energy performances of a concentrating photovoltaic and thermal (CPV/T) system with a linear focus optics, allows to evaluate the possibility of adopting this type of system for cogeneration purposes. Hence, the main aim of this paper is the design, realization, setting and modeling of a linear focus CPV/T system in the high concentration field. An experimental linear focus CPV/T plant was created in order to determine its electrical and thermal performance under different working conditions in terms of environment temperature, sunny and cloudy conditions, focal length, etc. Moreover, a theoretical model of the linear focus CPV/T system was also studied. This model evaluates the temperatures of the working fluid that flows in the cooling circuit of the CPV/T system under several operating conditions. The temperatures of the triple junction (TJ) cells, experimentally evaluated referring to different solar radiation and atmospheric conditions, were considered as the input data for the model. The values of the fluid temperature, theoretically and experimentally determined, were thus compared with good agreement. The electrical production of the CPV/T system depends generally on the TJ cell characteristics and the concentration factor, while the thermal production is above all linked to the system configuration and the direct normal irradiance (DNI) values. Hence, in this paper the electric power obtained by the linear-focus CPV/T system was evaluated referring to the cogeneration applications, and it was verified if the TJ cell and the cooling fluid reach adequate temperature levels in this type of system, in order to match the electrical and the thermal loads of a user.

Résumé :
The costs of concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) and concentrating photovoltaic and thermal (CPV/T) systems are highly reduced in the last years because of their increasing diffusion. The unit power cost also depends on the plant size. Hence, the main aim of this paper is to analyze the feasibility of a CPV/T system adopted for users with increasing sizes located in Salerno (Italy): the house, the hotel, and the food industry. An experimental model was developed for an accurate evaluation of the electrical and thermal powers supplied by the CPV/T system when direct normal irradiation (DNI) and environmental temperature vary. A modular configuration of a line-focus CPV/T system was sized to match the electrical and thermal loads of each user. The current economic results, together with a forecast till the year 2025, were discussed. In 2025, for the same CPV system adopted for the domestic user, the net present value (NPVs) are expected to increase by 6.7% and 13% in pessimistic and optimistic scenarios, respectively, with reductions of its discounted payback period (DPBP) of 16% and 30%. For the same CPV systems adopted for the other two users, the NPVs are expected to increase by about 4.2% and 8.4% in pessimistic and optimistic scenarios, respectively, with decreases of its DPBP of 14% and 27%.

Résumé :
A linear focus Concentrator Photovoltaic and Thermal (CPV/T) system can match the thermal demands of a user. The evaluation of the cooling fluid temperature levels of a CPV/T system is fundamental to understand if this system is capable of satisfying the typical thermal requirements of a residential user (heating, cooling and domestic hot water). First, an experimental line-focus CPV/T system, realized in the Laboratory of Applied Thermodynamics of the University of Salerno (Italy), has allowed to determine the cooling fluid temperature at the CPV/T system outlet. Successively, the cooling fluid temperatures, experimentally obtained, have been compared with the same temperatures calculated by means of a theoretical model under the same operation conditions. A deviation in terms of the percentage relative error between theoretical and experimental results included between about 0.5% and 5%, has been found. The goodness of the theoretical–experimental comparison in terms of the temperature of the operation fluid at the CPV/T system outlet has represented a fundamental point to evaluate theoretically, by means of the TRNSYS software, the other levels of temperature of an integrated system, constituted by CPV/T system, thermal tank and user, for different temporal scenarios (hourly, weekly, monthly and yearly). The input data of the TRNSYS model are: Direct Normal Irradiance (DNI), Triple-Junction (TJ) cell temperature and environmental conditions. A tank model is also adopted to satisfy the thermal energy demand peaks, and the temperature stratification in the tank linked to the CPV/T system, as function of the height, is obtained in winter and summer. It is important to define these thermal levels to verify if a CPV/T system is capable to satisfy the residential user energy demands or a thermal energy integration is necessary in some periods of the year. A good stratification has been noted in the summer season, with temperature values that are variable between about 40 and 90 °C. From April to October, the tank average temperature is generally resulted about 10 °C higher than the temperature required by the fluid sent to the residential user, and a very low integration is then necessary. It has been verified that the CPV/T system covers a large part of the thermal energy needs of the residential user during the year; the coverage is limited only in the winter months.

Résumé :
The increasing energy demand encourages the use of photovoltaic solar systems coupled to organic rankine cycle (ORC) systems. This paper presents a model of an ORC system coupled with a concentrating photovoltaic and thermal (CPV/T) system. The CPV/T-ORC combined system, described and modeled in this paper, is sized to match the electrical load of a medium industrial user located in the South of Italy. A line-focus configuration of the CPV/T system, constituted by 16 modules with 500 triple-junction cells, is adopted. Different simulations have been realized evaluating also the direct normal irradiance (DNI) by means of the artificial neural network (ANN) and considering three input condition scenarios: Summer, winter, and middle season. Hence, the energy performances of the CPV/T-ORC system have been determined to evaluate if this integrated system can satisfy the industrial user energy loads. In particular, the peak power considered for the industrial machines is about 42 kW while other electrical, heating or cooling loads require a total peak power of 15 kW; a total electric average production of 7500 kWh/month is required. The annual analysis shows that the CPV/T-ORC system allows satisfying 100% of the electric loads from April to September; moreover, in these months the overproduction can be sold to the network or stored for a future use. The covering rates of the electrical loads are equal to 73%, 77%, and 83%, respectively for January, February, and March and 86%, 93%, and 100%, respectively for October, November, and December. Finally, the CPV/T-ORC combined system represents an ideal solution for an industrial user from the energy point of view.

Résumé :
The performance of Concentrating Photovoltaic and Thermal (CPV/T) systems is also linked to climatic conditions. In this paper, the main purpose is to determine the energy and economic performance of a line-focus CPV/T system used for a residential user, considering three cities with different weather conditions: Amsterdam (The Netherlands), Marrakech (Morocco), and Salerno (Italy). A modular configuration of a CPV/T system, with a concentration factor equal to 90 and module of 60 Triple-Junction (TJ) cells, is considered. The electrical power is linked to the values of TJ cell temperature and concentrated radiation by an experimental model. Electric production is highly influenced by the TJ cell temperature values. Hence, Marrakech presents lower power generation in summer than Amsterdam, 126 W, and 134 W respectively; in winter season the trend is reversed. However, the electric production in Marrakech will be higher because presents a higher number of daylight hours than other cities considered. The CPV/T system electrical and thermal producibility is evaluated for each city and for typical winter and summer sunny days, together with the modules number able to obtain the investment profitability.

Résumé :
Imaging concentrators like the parabolic trough solar concentrators have been widely employed for energy production in solar power plants. The conventional imaging solar concentrators form a non-uniform Gaussian distribution on receiving absorbers yielding the highest temperatures. The traditional CSP system normally truncated a peripheral region of heat flux to better use the central part. CPV/T systems using the waste heat recovery method can largely improve the total efficiency. However, for the CPV module, the coolant temperature was usually below 80 °C, which limited the applications of the thermal cycle such as the ORC system. In this article, a novel trough-type free-form secondary solar concentrator (TFSC) for PV/Thermal hybrid application has been proposed. Different from other CPV/T concepts using a combined PV panel and cooling tunnel/tube, the current concept separates the receiver in two parts. The secondary free-form reflector is generated by the geometric construction method, resulting in uniform heat flux in the edge region and high concentration in the central region. Through the ray tracing method, the optical properties have been verified. Sensitivity analysis of the concentrating structure is also conducted. The results provide supports for the design and applications of novel CPV/T systems.

Résumé :
Objectives The present study was undertaken to characterise the viral polypeptide 2 (VP2) gene of parvovirus from domestic cats in India. Methods The faecal samples from diarrhoeic/healthy domestic cats were collected from different geographical regions of India for screening by PCR assay followed by sequence analysis of the VP2 gene. Results Canine parvovirus (CPV)/feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) infections were found in 12 (11.3%) of 106 faecal samples tested. Two new CPV-2a (297Ala and Asn426) and three FPV strains were identified by VP2 gene analysis. Several unique and existing amino acid mutations were found, suggesting continuous evolution and emergence of newer variants. The phylogenetic analysis of the CPV sequences revealed that the two new CPV-2a strains from Mumbai (MC8) and Puducherry (P15) were clustered together in a single clade but had evolved independently and were ancestrally related to Chinese CPV-2a isolates. The FPV sequences (T-C-6 and T-C-1) from Thrissur, Kerala, formed a different clade (FPV clade) and were closely related to each other and had an ancestral relationship with an FPV isolate from the USA. Another FPV isolate from Goa (GC1) was positioned in the same clade but had evolved independently. Conclusions and relevance Detection of CPV in both diarrhoeic/healthy cats and the occurrence of FPV infection in a vaccinated cat provide new insights into parvovirus infections in cats in India.

Résumé :
The technology of a hybrid solar concentration photovoltaic/thermal (CPV/T) system is an efficient way of converting solar energy to heat and electrical power, in which overall energy-extraction efficiency is at its highest. In this study, numerical dynamic simulation models were developed for a hybrid solar CPV/T system and an adsorption refrigeration system (ARS). Under the climatic conditions of Riyadh all year round, the electrical and thermal powers generated by the CPV/T system were used to estimate the ice production of both the vapor compression refrigeration system (VCS) and the ARS. The CPV/T system can provide a thermal energy of 37.6 kWh and electrical energy of 24.7 kWh a day on average over the year using a 12.5 m2 facing area of Fresnel lenses. The ARS employed an advanced approach which used Maxsorb III adsorbent packed in two aluminum foam beds. An optimum cycle time of the ARS was adapted for each month to match the variation in the thermal energy, while a variable-speed compressor was chosen for the VCS. Due to its higher coefficient of performance (COP), the proposed solar hybrid system can produce 494.4 kg of ice per day while sharing 84.5% of the VCS. The average solar COP over the year of the hybrid system can attain 0.875, which represents a promising value for a solar ice-production system.

ABSTRACT Unlike the multiple-shelled organization of otherReoviridae members, cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus (CPV) has a single-shelled capsid. The three-dimensional structures of full and empty CPV by electron cryomicroscopy show identical outer shells but differ inside. The outer surface reveals a T=1 icosahedral shell decorated with spikes at its icosahedral vertices. The internal space of the empty CPV is unoccupied except for 12 mushroom-shaped densities attributed to the transcriptional enzyme complexes. The ordered double-stranded RNA inside the full capsid forms spherical shells spaced 25 Å apart. The RNA-protein interactions suggest a mechanism for RNA transcription and release.

Résumé :
In the field of solar power generation, concentrator systems, such as concentrator photovoltaics (CPV) or concentrated solar power (CSP), are subject of intensive research activity, due to high efficiencies in electrical power generation compared to conventional photovoltaics (PV) and low-cost energy storage on the thermal side. Even though the idea of combining the thermal and electrical part in one absorber is obvious, very few hybrid systems (i.e., concentrator photovoltaics-thermal systems (CPV-T)) are either described in literature or commercially available. This paper features the conversion of a commercial thermal parabolic trough collector to a CPV-T hybrid system using multi-junction PV cells. The design process is described in detail starting with the selection of suitable PV cells, elaborating optical and mechanical system requirements, heat sink design and final assembly. Feasibility is proven by practical tests involving maximum power point tracking as well as empirical determination of heat generation and measurement results are presented.

Résumé :
Symmetries, and Symmetry Breakings, in the Laws of Physics play a crucial role in Fundamental Science. Parity and Charge Conjugation Violations prompted the consideration of Chiral Fields in the construction of the Standard Model, whereas CP-Violation needed at least three families of Quarks leading to Flavour Physics. In this Lecture I discuss the Conceptual Basis and the present experimental results for a Direct Evidence of Separate Reversal-in-Time T, CP and CPT Genuine Asymmetries in Decaying Particles like Neutral Meson Transitions, using Quantum Entanglement and the Decay as a Filtering Measurement. The eight transitions associated to the Flavour-CP eigenstate decay products of entangled neutral mesons have demonstrated with impressive significance a separate evidence of TRV and CPV in Bd-physics, whereas a CPTV asymmetry shows a 2σ effect interpreted as an upper limit. Novel CPTV observables are discussed for K physics at KLOE-2, including the difference between the semileptonic asymmetries from KL and KS, the ratios of double decay rate Intensities to Flavour-CP eigenstate decay products and the ω-effect. Their observation would lead to a change of paradigm beyond Quantum Field Theory, however there is nothing in Quantum Mechanics forbidding CPTV.

Résumé :
This work presents performance study of a concentrating photovoltaic/thermal (CPV/T) collector and its efficiency to produce electric and thermal power under different operating conditions. The study covers a detailed description of flat photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) and CPV/T systems using water as a cooling working fluid, numerical model analysis, and qualitative evaluation of thermal and electrical output. The aim of this study was to achieve higher efficiency of the photovoltaic (PV) system while reducing the cost of generating power. Concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) cells with low-cost reflectors were used to enhance the efficiency of the PV system and simultaneously reduce the cost of electricity generation. For this purpose, a linear Fresnel flat mirror (LFFM) integrated with a PV system was used for low-concentration PV cells (LCPV). To achieve the maximum benefit, water as a coolant fluid was used to study the ability of actively cooling PV cells, since the electrical power of the CPV system is significantly affected by the temperature of the PV cells. This system was characterized over the traditional PV systems via producing more electrical energy due to concentrating the solar radiation as well as cooling the PV modules and at the same time producing thermal energy that can be used in domestic applications. During the analysis of the results of the proposed system, it was found that the maximum electrical and thermal energy obtained were 170 W and 580 W, respectively, under solar concentration ratio 3 and the flow rate of the cooling water 1 kg/min. A good agreement between the theoretical and experimental results was confirmed.

Résumé :
Nanofluids are identified as advanced working fluids in the solar energy conversion field with superior heat transfer characteristics. This research work introduces carbon-based diamond nanomaterial and Therminol®55 oil-based nanofluids for implementation in a concentrated photovoltaic/thermal (CPV/T) solar collector. This study focuses on the experimental formulation, characterization of properties, and performance evaluation of the nanofluid-based CPV/T system. Thermo-physical (thermal conductivity, viscosity, and rheology), optical (UV-vis and FT-IR), and stability (Zeta potential) properties of the formulated nanofluids are characterized at 0.001–0.1 wt.% concentrations of dispersed particles using experimental assessment. The maximum photo-thermal energy conversion efficiency of the base fluid is improved by 120.80% at 0.1 wt.%. The thermal conductivity of pure oil is increased by adding the nanomaterial. The highest enhancement of 73.39% is observed for the TH-55/DP nanofluid. Furthermore, dynamic viscosity decreased dramatically across the temperature range studied (20–100 °C), and the nanofluid exhibited dominant Newtonian flow behavior, with viscosity remaining nearly constant up to a shear rate of 100 s−1. Numerical simulations of the nanofluid-operated CPV/T collector have disclosed substantial improvements. At a concentrated solar irradiance of 5000 W/m2 and an optimal flow rate of 3 L/min, the highest thermal and electrical energy conversion efficiency enhancements are found to be 11 and 1.8%, respectively.

Three cropping patterns (CP1 - Transplanted Aman rice (var:Binadhan-7)– Mustard (var:BARISarisha-14)– Boro rice (var:BRRIdhan-28)– Transplanted Aus rice (var:Parija), CP2 - T. aman rice – Potato (var:Diamont) – Boro rice – T. aus rice and CP3 - T. aman rice – Mustard (var:BARISarisha-15) – Mungbean (var:BARIMung-6) –T. aus rice) are based on four crops; and one cropping pattern (CP4 = T. aman rice – Fallow – Boro rice – Fallow) with two rice crops as control were tested. Four crops can be grown successfully one after another in sequence in all the three cropping patterns tested. On an average organic matter 3.56, 4.70, 3.58 and 2 t ha-1 were added to soil in CP1, CP2, CP3 and CP4 by incorporation of biomass of respective crops. The highest rice equivalent yield (REY) 34.10, 34.02 and 33.36 t ha-1 was obtained from the cropping pattern CP2 in 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14, respectively and it was followed by CP1 and CP3. The highest average gross return (Tk.5,00,469 ha-1) and net return (Tk. 2,63,773 ha-1) were obtained from CP2 and it was followed by CP3 but the highest average B:C ratio (2.89) was obtained from the cropping pattern CP3 followed by CP2 (2.11) due to lower cost of production than in the former one. Four crops based patterns can be recommended for higher productivity, soil enrichment & economic benefit besides creating more employment opportunity.SAARC J. Agri., 13(1): 135-147 (2015)

Résumé :
A highly sensitive novel amperometric genosensor has been developed for rapid detection of canine parvovirus (CPV) DNA in fecal swabs of naturally infected dogs. The genosensor is based on a single stranded 5°-thiolated (SH) DNA probe complementary to VP1/VP2 gene of canine parvo vaccine strain, immobilized covalently on a polycrystalline gold (Au) electrode. The genosensor has been characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR), cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS). The ssDNA-SH/Au electrode was hybridized with single stranded target DNA (ss T-DNA) in the sample. This hybridization was detected by reduction in current, generated by interaction of methylene blue (MB) with free guanine of ssDNA. The current response of genosensor was determined by CV, DPV and EIS. The sensor detected single stranded genomic DNA (ss g-DNA) isolated from vaccine strain of CPV in the range, 1.0–12.0 ng/μl at 25 °C for 10 min. Subsequently, the genobiosensor was applied for detection of CPV viral DNA in fecal swabs of naturally infected dogs. The limit of detection (LOD) of the sensor was 1.0 ng/μl of fecal viral DNA. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on development and application of amperometric biosensor for rapid, sensitive, specific point of care detection of viral DNA of CPV in feces.

Résumé :
Concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) systems have displayed an important cost reduction and in the next few years could offer a competitive cost advantage compared to that of flat plate PV systems. Such CPV systems require some cooling methods to overcome high operating temperatures, which reduces their efficiency significantly. On the other hand, thermoelectric generators (TEG) are devices that convert thermal energy directly to electrical energy, provided that there is a temperature difference between its two faces. A hybrid concentrator photovoltaic/thermal (CPV/T) system is proposed in this work. Such a system uses TEG in a two-fold manner: to passively cool down the CPV cell in order to maintain its power conversion efficiency in such high temperature conditions, and to use the accumulated thermal energy to generate electrical energy, which is added to the system’s total power output. Two types of solar cells were investigated, namely, Ga0.35In0.65P/Ga0.83In0.17As with efficiency an of 28% at 250X, and a Laser Grooved Buried Contact (LGBC) silicon concentrator PV cell with an efficiency of 18.3% at 40X. These cells are assumed to be coupled with two TEGs of the same type but with a different number of junctions. Experimental results showed that coupling TEG modules to a CPV system could be a useful method for enhancing the overall output power, provided that PV cells are chosen with a low efficiency temperature coefficient and high PV performance. Also, TEG modules have to be chosen with a high figure of merit. Moreover, the operating optical concentration ratio, as well as the covered area of the TEG, have to be optimized in order to maximize the total system output.

Résumé :
A field trial was conducted at the Regional Wheat Research Centre of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Rajshahi to study the comparative agronomic performance and economic return of four crops based cropping patterns. The cropping patterns were as follows: CP1= Transplanted Aman rice (cv. Binadhan-7)–Mustard (cv. BARI Sarisha14)–Boro rice (cv. BRRI dhan28) – Transplanted Aus rice (cv. Parija); CP2= T. Aman rice–Potato (cv. Diamont)–Boro rice–T.Aus rice; CP3=T. Aman rice–Mustard (cv. BARI Sarisha15)–Mungbean (cv. BARI Mung 6) –T. Aus rice and CP4 = T. Aman rice–Fallow–Boro rice–Fallow (Control). The results showed that four crops could be grown successfully one after another in a sequence in the field with three crops patterns. The highest rice equivalent yield (REY) 25.62 t ha-1 was obtained from the cropping pattern CP2 (T. Aman rice–Potato–Boro rice–T.Aus rice) and it was followed by CP1 (18.49) and CP3 (16.03) during one year crops cycle. The highest gross margin Tk. 148882 ha-1 was also obtained from CP2 followed by CP3 (Tk. 133315 ha-1). The highest MBCR (2.24) was however, obtained from the cropping pattern CP3 (T. Aman–Mustard– Mungbean–T. Aus). Based on overall yield performance, economic benefit and climatic situation of Rajshahi region it may be concluded that CP3 was the best pattern than others.Bangladesh Agron. J. 2014, 17(2): 55-60

Résumé :
ABSTRACT The conservation of the core structure and diversification of the external features among the turreted reoviruses appear to be relevant to structural evolution in facilitating the infection of diverse host species. The structure of Rice ragged stunt virus (RRSV), in the genus Oryzavirus of the family Reoviridae, is determined to show a core composed of capsid shell, clamps, and long turrets. The RRSV core structure is equivalent to the core structure of Orthoreovirus and the virion structure of Cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus (CPV). In RRSV, five peripheral trimers surround each long turret and sit at the Q trimer position in the T=13l icosahedral symmetry, a structural feature unique to turreted reoviruses. That is, the core of RRSV is partially covered by 60 copies of the peripheral trimer. In contrast, the core of Orthoreovirus is covered by 200 copies of the trimer that sit at the Q, R, S, and T trimer positions. Our results suggest that among the three viruses, RRSV has a structure intermediate between that of Orthoreovirus and the CPV virion. This conclusion coincides with the results of the phylogenetic analysis of amino acid sequences of RNA-dependent RNA polymerases.

Résumé :
Abstract Cancer vaccines induce cancer-specific T-cells capable of eradicating cancer cells. The impact of cancer peptide vaccines (CPV) on the tumor microenvironment (TME) remains unclear. S-588410 is a CPV comprising five human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-A*24:02-restricted peptides derived from five cancer testis antigens, DEPDC1, MPHOSPH1, URLC10, CDCA1 and KOC1, which are overexpressed in esophageal cancer. This exploratory study investigated the immunologic mechanism of action of subcutaneous S-588410 emulsified with MONTANIDE ISA51VG adjuvant (median: 5 doses) by analyzing the expression of immune-related molecules, cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) response and T-lymphocytes bearing peptide-specific T-cell receptor (TCR) sequencing in tumor tissue or blood samples from 15 participants with HLA-A*24:02-positive esophageal cancer. Densities of CD8+, CD8+ Granzyme B+, CD8+ programmed death-1-positive (PD-1+) and programmed death-ligand 1-positive (PD-L1+) cells were higher in post- versus pre-vaccination tumor tissue. CTL response was induced in all patients for at least one of five peptides. The same sequences of peptide-specific TCRs were identified in post-vaccination T-lymphocytes derived from both tumor tissue and blood, suggesting that functional peptide-specific CTLs infiltrate tumor tissue after vaccination. Twelve (80%) participants had treatment-related adverse events (AEs). Injection site reaction was the most frequently reported AE (grade 1, n = 1; grade 2, n = 11). In conclusion, S-588410 induces a tumor immune response in esophageal cancer. Induction of CD8+ PD-1+ tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes and PD-L1 expression in the TME by vaccination suggests S-588410 in combination with anti-PD-(L)1 antibodies may offer a clinically useful therapy. Résumé :
Given the common ancestry of Dutch and Afrikaans, it is not surprising that they use similar periphrastic constructions to express progressive meaning:aan het(Dutch) andaan die/’t(Afrikaans) lit. ‘at the’;bezig met/(om)te(Dutch) lit. ‘busy with/to’ andbesig om telit. ‘busy to’ (Afrikaans); and so-called cardinal posture verb constructions (zitten/sit‘sit’,staan‘stand’,liggen/lê‘lie’ andlopen/loop‘walk’), CPVte(‘to’ Dutch) and CPVen(‘and’ Afrikaans). However, these cognate constructions have grammaticalized to different extents. To assess the exact nature of these differences, we analyzed the constructions with respect to overall frequency, collocational range, and transitivity (compatibility with transitive predicates and passivizability). We used two corpora that are equal in size (both about 57 million words) and contain roughly the same types of written text. It turns out that the use of periphrastic progressives is generally more widespread in Afrikaans than in Dutch. As far as grammaticalization is concerned, we found that the Afrikaansaan die- and CPV-constructions, as well as the Dutchbezig- and CPV-constructions, are semantically restricted. In addition, only the Afrikaansbesig- and CPVen-constructions allow passivization, which is remarkable for such periphrastic expressions.*

Résumé :
Water productivity improvement is getting the prime concern to sustain irrigated rice production in the water-scarce areas of Bangladesh under changing climate. Besides, profitable cropping pattern selection is one of the major indicators of commercial agriculture. The study was conducted at Mithapukur and Pirganj Upazilas of Rangpur district during 2018–2020 to evaluate the water saving and profitability of three crop cropping patterns over two crops pattern. The experiment involved two improved patterns, T. Aman-Mustard-Boro (CP1) and T. Aman-Potato-Boro (CP2), and one locally popular pattern, T. Aman-Fallow-Boro (CP3). Irrigation management involved supplemental irrigation for T. Aman rice, irrigation application after disappearing standing water for Boro rice, and two irrigations at critical stages of potato and mustard. Both CP1 and CP2 received higher rainfall than CP3 because the delayed transplanting of Boro rice captured more rainfall. The improved patterns of CP1 and CP2 saved 22–40% of irrigation water compared with CP3. Among the patterns, CP2 achieved the highest rice equivalent yield (REY) of 21.1–33.6 t·ha−1 due to excellent potato production. Similarly, CP2 provided the highest irrigation water productivity because of higher REY as well as less irrigation requirement. Both CP1 and CP2 patterns returned a higher gross margin than CP3. The findings indicated that the inclusion of potato and mustard in the T. Aman-Fallow-Boro cropping pattern saved irrigation water as well as increased production and economic benefit. Adoption of these water-efficient cropping patterns may reduce groundwater irrigation in the water-scarce areas of Bangladesh.
