Résumé :
ABSTRACT There are a number of treatment options for keratoconus, but only corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) appears to halt the progression of the disease. To guarantee effective cross-linking, CXL treatment involves removal of the corneal epithelium prior to riboflavin application and ultraviolet light illumination to ensure that riboflavin reaches the collagen in the stroma—epithelial-on cross-linking (‘Epi-off’ CXL). Several methods of ‘Epi-on’ (transepithelial) CXL have been proposed, as keeping the corneal epithelium intact should be less painful and help avoid other CXL-associated adverse events. The evidence to date is that Epi-off CXL remains the most effective method of strengthening the cornea and slowing keratoconus progression—but transepithelial methods are gaining ground. Résumé :
Purpose:To compare the clinical post operative results of off-flap epi- LASIK and photorefractive keratectomy (P.R.K) for the correction of myopiaMethods:In Al-Hillah teaching Hospital (Laser Unit),100 eyes of 50 patients with myopia in which off-flap epi-LASIK was done to one eye and photorefractive keratectomy (P.R.K ) was done to other eye , in epi- LASIK mechanical separation of the corneal epithelium was performed with MORIA epikeratome and alcohol assisted separation with 25 seconds application of 18% alcohol (P.R.K technique). Ablation was performed with NIDEK CXIII laser . The patients were seen daily until epithelial healing and at one, three, and six months, time to epithelial healing , haze grades and pain scales were recorded Results:pre operative myopic spherical refraction was (-3.90 ± 1.45 diopters ) range (-2.00 to-6.50 diopters ) , the mean time to epithelial healing was slightly longer after (P.R.K ) (4.9 ± 0.6 days ) compared to epi-LASIK (4.20 ± 0.56 days ). Of both techniques (P.R.K and epi-LASIK) treated eyes 94% achieved 6/6 after six months; the grades of pain and haze were nearly similar in both off-flap Epi-LASIK and P.R.KConclusions:Off-flap epi-LASIK and P.R.K offer effective correction of myopia with comparable results regarding postoperative pain and haze

Résumé :
AbstractThe cumulative printers index in W. Nijhoff and M.E. Kronenberg's Nerlerlranrl- .sche BiblioAr(zl)hie van 1500-1540 (NK), part III, vol III, contains the most recent, complete description of the Delft printer Cornelis Lettersnijder's publishers' list. It records four editions of the New Testament in 1518, 1524, 1525, and 1533. Copies exist only of the well-known edition of 1524 (NK 378). It is generally considered unlikely that a 1518 edition (NK 0140) ever existed. In contrast to previous scholarship, M.E. Kronenberg believes that no 1525 edition (NK 0149) existed either. Only a few 19th-century catalogues attest to the 1533 (NK 0160) edition. The present study starts with a short exploration of the printer and his list. It goes on to deal with his editions of the New Testament. The study confirms that the editions of 1518 anJ 1525 were indeed never published, so that of the four editions supposed, only two ever saw print. The recent discovery by the author in the "Jezuietenbibliotheek Berchmanianum" in Nijmegen of a copy of the 1533 edition enables him to offer a bibliographical description of the publication in addition to an analysis of the contents of this heretofore so poorly known edition. The edition was printed in octavo format and was published in a joint venture with the printer Henrick Peetersen van Middelburch. The study demonstrates how the Antwerp printer Michiel Hillen van Hoochstraten copied and simplified Lettersnijder's text in the 1524 edition for his own editions of the New Testament in 1527, 1530, and 1531 (2x). It goes on to show that one of Van Hoochstraten's editions in turn stood at the basis of Lettersnijder's 1533 edition of the New Testament.

Résumé :
In late 2007, a new disease was found in commercial cutflower fields of bells-of-Ireland (Molucella laevis L.) in Texcoco, Mexico. Four plantings surveyed during this time had 100% incidence. A few spots on cutflowers make them unmarketable. Symptoms consisted of gray-green spots on leaves, calyxes, and stems, which turned brown with age. Spots were initially circular to oval, delimited by major leaf veins, and were visible on both adaxial and abaxial sides of the leaves. A Cercospora species was consistently associated with the spots. The fungus was isolated on V8 agar medium. Three single-spore cultures were obtained from isolation cultures. Cultures were incubated at 24°C under near-UV light for 7 days. Pathogenicity was confirmed by spraying a conidial suspension (1 × 104 condia/ml) on leaves of 16 potted M. laevis plants, incubating the plants in a dew chamber for 48 h, and maintaining them in a greenhouse (20 to 24°C). Identical symptoms to those observed in the field appeared on all inoculated plants after 2 weeks. No symptoms developed on control plants treated with autoclaved distilled water. The pathogenicity test was repeated twice with similar results. The fungus produced erumpent stromata, which were dark brown, spherical to irregular, 10 to 26 μm diameter, and giving rise to fascicles of five to nine divergent conidiophores, which were clear brown, paler near the subtruncate apex, straight to curved, not branched, rarely geniculate with two to four septa, and 57 × 3.4 μm. The conidia were formed singly, hyaline, acicular, base truncate, tip acute, straight to curved with 11 to 19 septa, and 172 × 3.5 μm. Fungal DNA from single-spore cultures was obtained with a commercial extraction kit (Qiagen, Hilden, Germany), amplified with ITS5 and ITS4 primers, and sequenced. The sequence, deposited at the National Center for Biotechnology Information Database (GenBank Accession No. EU564808), aligned almost perfectly (99% identity) to the bells-of-Ireland isolates from California (GenBank Accession Nos. AY156918 and AY156919) and New Zealand (Accession No. DQ233321). A 176-bp species-specific fragment was amplified with CercoCal-apii primers but not with CercoCal-beta or CercoCal-sp primers. These results, coupled with the morphological characteristics (1) and pathogenicity test, confirm the identity of the fungus as Cercospora apii sensu lato (including C. molucellae) (2,3,4). Although C. apii sensu lato has been reported on other hosts in Mexico (1,2), to our knowledge, this is the first report of this disease on M. laevis plants in this country. References: (1) C. Résumé :
Artworks that use found or appropriated images and objects often function as collections. These collections simulate the everyday collections of mementos and souvenirs that come to represent aspects of an individual's personality and past. The collections of objects mirror the individual's collection of memories that help to define himself and provide a means of communication with others. The artist as collector takes on roles similar to that of storyteller and anthropologist, providing a narrative of conscious preservation. Through various devices of display and denial a curiosity cabinet I Wunderkammer representing and simulating a Self is created and the role of collector is passed on to the viewer.

Résumé :
This biography of Clarence Samuel Stein comprehensively examines his built and unbuilt projects and his intellectual legacy as a proponent of the “Garden City” for a modern age. This examination of Stein's life and legacy focuses on four critical themes: his collaborative ethic in envisioning policy, design, and development solutions; promotion and implementation of “investment housing;” his revolutionary approach to community design, as epitomized in the Radburn Idea; and his advocacy of communitarian regionalism. His cutting-edge projects such as Sunnyside Gardens in New York City; Baldwin Hills Village in Los Angeles; and Radburn, New Jersey, his “town for the motor age,” continue to inspire community designers and planners in the United States and around the world. Stein was among the first architects to integrate new design solutions and support facilities into large-scale projects intended primarily to house working-class people, and he was a cofounder of the Regional Planning Association of America. As a planner, designer, and, at times, financier of new housing developments, Stein wrestled with the challenges of creating what today we would term “livable,” “walkable,” and “green” communities during the ascendency of the automobile. He managed these challenges by partnering private capital with government funding, as well as by collaborating with colleagues in planning, architecture, real estate, and politics.

Résumé :
This book offers the only examination of the television writing of David Milch and David Simon as significant contributions to American culture, literature, and social realism. David Milch and David Simon are two of the most prolific and successful television drama writers in the last 30 years. These talented writers have combined real-world knowledge with wild imaginations and understandings of the human psyche to create riveting shows with realistic environments and storylines. Minch and Simon's writing have resulted in television series that have earned both critical acclaim and millions of viewers. The Wire, Deadwood, Homicide, and NYPD Blue: Violence is Power is the most comprehensive text yet written about Milch and Simon, and documents how television dramas of the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s mirrored American culture with unprecedented sociological accuracy. The author explains how both individuals are not only capable dramatists, but also insightful cultural critics. This book also examines the full range of Milch's and Simon's authorial careers, including Milch's books True Blue: The Real Stories behind NYPD Blue and Deadwood: Tales of the Black Hills and Simon's Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets and The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood.

Résumé :
San Diego and Tijuana are the site of a national border enforcement spectacle, but they are also neighboring cities with deeply intertwined histories, cultures, and economies. In Unequal Neighbors: Place Stigma and the Making of a Local Border, Kristen Hill Maher and David Carruthers shift attention from the national border to a local one, examining the role of place stigma in reinforcing actual and imagined inequalities between these cities. Widespread “bordered imaginaries” in San Diego represent it as a place of economic vitality, safety, and order, while stigmatizing Tijuana as a zone of poverty, crime, and corruption. These dualisms misrepresent complex realities on the ground, but they also have real material effects: the vision of a local border benefits some actors in the region while undermining others. Based on a wide range of original empirical materials, the book examines how asymmetries between these cities have been produced and reinforced through stigmatizing representations of Tijuana in media, everyday talk, economic relations, and local tourism discourse and practices. However, both place stigma and borders are subject to contestation, and the study also examines “debordering” practices and counternarratives about Tijuana’s image. While the details of the study are particular to this corner of the world, the processes it documents offer a window into the making of unequal neighbors more broadly. The dynamics of this case present a framework for understanding how inequalities between places rest in part on cultural practices that produce asymmetric borders.

Résumé :
Tucked away in the northeastern corner of Alaska is one of the most contested landscapes in all of North America: the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Considered sacred by Indigenous peoples in Alaska and Canada and treasured by environmentalists, the refuge provides life-sustaining habitat for caribou, polar bears, migratory birds, and other species. For decades, though, the fossil fuel industry and powerful politicians have sought to turn this unique ecosystem into an oil field. Defending the Arctic Refuge tells the improbable story of how the people fought back. At the center of the story is the unlikely figure of Lenny Kohm (1939–2014), a former jazz drummer and aspiring photographer who passionately committed himself to Arctic Refuge activism. With the aid of a trusty slide show, Kohm and representatives of the Gwich’in Nation traveled across the United States to mobilize grassroots opposition to oil drilling. From Indigenous villages north of the Arctic Circle to Capitol Hill and many places in between, this book shows how Kohm and Gwich’in leaders and environmental activists helped build a political movement that transformed the debate into a struggle for environmental justice. In its final weeks, the Trump administration fulfilled a long-sought dream of drilling proponents: leasing much of the Arctic Refuge coastal plain for fossil fuel development. Yet the fight to protect this place is certainly not over. Defending the Arctic Refuge traces the history of a movement that is alive today—and that will continue to galvanize diverse groups to safeguard this threatened land.

Résumé :
AbstractThe main IOL power formulas are described along with the input variables used by each of them to predict the IOL position and the refractive outcomes reported by published studies. An overview of measurements techniques of anterior chamber depth, lens thickness, and corneal diameter is given. The impact of these variables is illustrated for the Barrett Universal II, EVO, Haigis, Hill-RBF, Hoffer Q, Holladay 1, Holladay 2, Kane, Olsen, PEARL-DGS, and SRK/T formulas. With formulas that do not take the anterior chamber into account, eyes with a deeper anterior chamber are more likely to experience a hyperopic outcome compared to eyes with a shallow anterior chamber. With most formulas, a tendency toward a myopic shift occurs with thin lenses and toward a hyperopic shift with thick lenses. Corneal diameter has a minimal effect on IOL power calculation.

Résumé :
This chapter examines the changes in political definitions and legal regulations of martyrdom. It recounts the uprising of a group of local gentry, businessmen, overseas students, and secret society members who broke into the residence of the viceroy of Guangdong and Guangxi, Zhang Mingqi. Some leaders of the insurgency had joined the Revolutionary Alliance, founded by Sun Yat-sen in Japan in 1905. Many of the rebels were killed in battle. The body count was recorded at eighty-six, but only seventy-two of the bodies could be identified. These seventy-two men became the Yellow Flower Hill martyrs. The chapter then exposes the plan of the county magistrates to dump them on Stinking Hill, where the local authorities had been burying criminals. However, Pan Dazheng, a participant in the uprising himself, and Jiang Kongyin, a Hanlin Academy member, intervened and had them buried on a hill outside the city center. The site, with its simple graves, became the Yellow Flower Hill, where a memorial complex was constructed in the late 1910s. Instead of being condemned as criminals, the chapter further analyses how these insurgents came to represent the ideal citizens of the Republic of China.

Résumé :
This chapter concerns mountain skis that are securely attached to the foot. Such skis allow various methods of hill climbing because they are easier to control than running skis that have no heel straps. One has to know how to climb a hill, ski back down while making turns, and in general control one's skis. Only then can one move about in variable terrain and perform jumps with confidence. The chapter shows that one can surmount a small slope without special exertion simply by lifting the front part of the skis and driving them back into the snow more forcefully, thereby preventing a slide backward.

Résumé :
This chapter focuses on Clarence Samuel Stein's contributions as a houser lending consistent support for a government role in order to more effectively engage the private sector while charting his transition to promoting investment housing as a preferable alternative to public housing. Stein and his colleagues enthusiastically welcomed the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt as an unprecedented opportunity to advance regionalism, new town planning, and worker housing. As a community architect, Stein favored a particular type of assisted housing—“investment housing”—a comprehensive design, development, and management approach to ensure the project's ongoing sustainability at affordable rates. This chapter first considers Stein's Hillside Homes project in New York before discussing the Resettlement Administration's Greenbelt Town program. It also examines Stein's role as consulting architect for the Baldwin Hills Village in Los Angeles.

Résumé :
This chapter focuses on the trials, tribulations, and results of planning and managing redevelopment of two activity centers in Montgomery County: Friendship Heights and the Hills and Bethesda. It first considers the decision of the Committee on the Planning, Zoning and Development of Central Business Districts and Transit Station Areas to rethink its development strategy for the twelve Metro station areas under county jurisdiction. It then describes the committee's proposal for three Central Business District zones, called CBD-1, CBD-2, and CBD-3, which secured the approval of the Montgomery County Council. It also discusses the planning politics of Friendship Heights and Bethesda and shows how the two projects provided tests of the legal theories underlying new hybrid zones and for balancing land use with the capacity of public facilities, especially transportation.

Résumé :
This chapter talks about the research-in-action Faculty Learning Community (FLC) that focused on integrating civic engagement (CE) into general education (GE) courses at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH). It illustrates the use of a collective leadership model in a genuine partnership between stakeholders from the community and the university, providing an example for how to create room for culture change within the campus community. It also mentions the diverse group of individual team members that made up the backbone of the FCL project, including their unique backgrounds and areas of expertise in tackling a common goal together. The chapter highlights how the project serves as a model for how to implement collective leadership with multiple stakeholders in higher education. It details how the institutional culture at CSUDH borrowed from common systems that impact how the faculty communicates and accomplishes goals.

Résumé :
This chapter examines how the obsidian craters just east of the Sierra Nevada mountain range erupted in the last few millennia, some in recent centuries. Obsidian, because it lacks the constraints imposed by an internal molecular order, can in fact be flaked into tools with edges that are many times sharper than a razor blade. In the Sierra Nevada, the authors found flakes of obsidian, shards left by indigenous hunters who worked the black volcanic glass into arrowpoints, their edges sharpened to translucence, to hunt the animals that would sustain their loved ones. Throughout their millennia of continuous presence in the Mono Basin, they would have witnessed volcanic eruptions give birth to the region's pale hills. The chapter then looks at the deep resemblance between the making of a mountain and the making of a mind.

Résumé :
Born in Hendersonville, North Carolina, Robert Morgan grew up on his family’s farm and wrote his first short story in the sixth grade at the prompting of a teacher. During college, after a professor said reading one of Morgan’s stories moved him to tears, Morgan transferred from North Carolina State University, where he was studying mathematics and engineering, to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, majoring in English. He began encouraging young writers himself when he accepted a teaching position at Cornell University in 1971. Since then, Morgan has made his academic home at Cornell in Ithaca, New York, on the northern edge of Appalachia, but his creative home is the southern mountains of his boyhood and young adult years....

Duan, Xinjian, Don Metzger et Mukesh Jian. « Influence of Yield Criteria on the Prediction of Shear Localization Considering the Inhomogeneous Distribution of Microstructure ». Dans ASME/JSME 2004 Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference. ASMEDC, 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2004-2747.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The occurrence of shear localization in structural materials is often associated with bifurcation in continuum solid mechanics. Many approaches such as J2 corner theory and the void model have been proposed to simulate this phenomenon by the use of FEM. In this paper, a new approach with a basis in microstructural inhomogeneity has been proposed and successfully applied to simulate large strain deformation in uniaxial tension of aluminium alloys. The method, in addition, takes advantage of a more suitable hardening law for Al alloys — namely the Voce equation. Further, the influence of various yield criteria (i.e. von Mises, Hill’s 1948 and Barlat’s 1991) on the prediction of shear localization is discussed in the present work. The predicted shear band angle is also compared with the measured value.

Whitehead, William Kay. « The Boulton and Watt winding engine for the Duke of Devonshire's Ecton copper mine, Staffordshire 1787-1790 ». Dans 2nd International Early Engines Conference. International Early Engines Conference & ISSES, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.54267/ieec2-2-07.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In 1787, the depth of Ecton mine was such that it became too slow and difficult to extract the ore using horse whims. This paper is presented as a diary of the design and construction of a rotative steam engine to replace these whims. Boulton and Watt had installed two such engines in Cornwall, using a new method of balancing (equalising) the winding ropes. The technical difficulties caused by the position of the mine-shaft, high on the steep sides of Ecton Hill meant that it took a year to design and build the engine. Finding someone to produce tapered ropes was also a challenge, as indeed is still the case in the 21st Century.

Résumé :
The Italian military architecture of Ancona’s Citadel: construction techniques and defensive systems in the sixteenth centuryThe objective of this research is regarding the construction techniques used in the military architecture of Cittadella-Fortezza (Ancona, Marche, Italy). In this case, attention will focus primarily on historical, bibliographic and archive research, then through a comprehensive analysis of building methods used in the sixteenth century and on the strategic function that this fortification covered in the coastal strip of the Middle Adriatic. Together with Rocca Paolina (Perugia) and Fortezza da Basso (Florence), it has in fact a remarkable importance in the military architecture’s history, as it was one of the first experiments of fronte bastionato all’italiana. Built from 1532 by Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane, it rises on the top of Astagno hill in a panoramic and defensive position, overlooking the city and the port. It clearly distinguishes itself from the surrounding building fabric as it is characterized by five mighty bastions in bricks and by the central bulwark with the vaulted ground floor. The study aims to investigate the structural details of Ancona’s fortress such as the modeling of walls, the suppression of protruding volumes, the extension and rounding of the corner towers and the introduction of the central type plan. A great understanding of this research will be analyzed in the drawings and the volumes’ reliefs, which highlighted the general geometric data, the materials used for the realization of the work, the angle of the curtain walls and the technical/constructive strategies. Therefore, the methodical-metric knowledge of the parts will be made more accessible also in relation to the three-dimensional modeling of the fortress, in addition to the critical comparison based on other historical examples of military architecture in the Renaissance period.

Résumé :
The Gold Hill quadrangle is on the northern end of the Deep Creek Range, approximately 65 kilometers (40 miles) south southeast of Wendover, Utah and 20 kilometers (12 miles) east of the Nevada border. The Deep Creek Range is a north-trending fault-bounded range exemplifying the ranges in the northern Basin and Range physiographic province. Dutch Mountain, approximately 7.2 kilometers (4.5 miles) north-northwest of Gold Hill town, is the highest point in the Gold Hill quadrangle at 2,372 meterc (7,794 feet). Lowlands, south of Dutch Mountain and west of Gold Hill town, range in elevation from 1,877 meters (6,160 feet) to 1,582 meters (5,190 feet) and are, in part, underlain by a pediment eroded on Eocene quartzmonzonite and Paleozoic strata. In the northeastern corner of the quadrangle, surficial deposits of Pleistocene Lake Bonneville occur at elevations ranging from 1,591 meters (5,220 feet) to 1 ,292 meters (4,240 feet). Abrupt boundaries between the mountains and lowlands in the Gold Hill quadrangle are illustrative of Basin and Range physiography.
