Lamour, Marie. « Utilisation des habitats estuariens par l'esturgeon européen (Acipenser sturio) dans un contexte de restauration des populations : étude des facteurs abiotiques, biotiques et apport des modèles hydrodynamiques ». Texte intégralThe European sturgeon (Acipenser sturio) is an anadromous species that was abundant in European rivers before the 20th century. Due to a sharp decline in its populations, the species has been classified as critically endangered, and is now the subject of two restoration programmes, in France and Germany. Thanks to restocking actions, there are currently two supported populations: one in the Gironde (France) and the second one in the Elbe (Germany). Between 2007 and 2015, more than 1.7 million individuals were released in the Gironde-Garonne-Dordogne basin and 20.000 individuals were released in the Elbe basin. In the Gironde, the population is monitored regularly, especially through scientific fishing campaigns in the estuary. The estuary is an essential habitat during the life of A. sturio, it is a migration corridor for juveniles and spawners, and it is also a growing habitat in which it may reside for several years as a juvenile before migrating to sea. During its growth at sea, given its coastal habits, A. sturio may also continue to make incursions into estuarine environments, either to find refuge (favourable environmental conditions) or preys. However, the environmental factors involved in the selection of estuarine habitats are not yet well identified. The aim of this study is to identify the influence of abiotic and biotic factors on the spatio-temporal distribution of A. sturio in the Gironde estuary. Based on the ecology of the species, the individuals were divided into two groups according to a size/age threshold (68cm fork length, which corresponds to about 3 years old). Above this threshold, most individuals are able to move back and forth with the marine environment; below this threshold, most individuals live only in the estuary. A spatial analysis combining biological data from sampling campaigns with environmental data simulated by a hydrodynamic model (MARS3D) has revealed a difference in habitat selection between these two groups on a seasonal scale in the Gironde estuary. The environmental variables tested, i.e. temperature, salinity, water column height, suspended matter concentration and current speed, explain more than 76% of the seasonal distribution of A. sturio. These results led to the localisation of potential habitats in the estuaries of the Gironde (beyond the sampling zone), the Loire, the Seine and the Elbe using hydrodynamic models similar to the one used in the Gironde. Potential habitats were identified in the four estuaries, in varying quantities and distribution depending on the season. The Seine and the Loire estuary can be favourable in terms of abiotic conditions in summer, mainly at the mouth of the estuary. In the Elbe estuary, potential habitats were identified for individuals < 68 cm mainly in spring and winter, while in autumn and summer the areas were very limited. Potential habitats were also identified at all seasons for individuals ≥ 68 cm, mainly at the mouth of the estuary and in coastal waters at all seasons but mainly in summer. VIII Finally, to explore the influence of biotic factors, a more specific study of prey consumption by A. sturio in Gironde was carried out. The results show that habitat selection is influenced by the presence of prey, mainly in autumn
