E l'impensato sta a testimoniare l'eccedenza.

This paper presents an evaluation of ride comfort performance of a passenger vehicle when converted into an electric vehicle (EV). The evaluations were done using a validated 7 degrees of freedom of vehicle’s ride model. The developed vehicle’s ride model was used to predict the vehicle’s ride behaviours when subjected to random road profiles. The ride model of EV conversion was then integrated with the active suspension system in order to further improve the EV conversion’s ride comfort performance. It was found that the modifications of a normal passenger vehicle into an EV conversion do not affect vehicle’s ride comfort performance significantly, except the conversion changes only the magnitude of vehicle’s vertical displacement, pitch rate and pitch angle responses. However, the integration of an active suspension system in EV conversions ride model was improves the observed responses of EV conversion’s ride comfort performance by overall improvement of 65.7 percents.

Résumé :
Many contemporary understandings and implementations of conversion are prefigured in historical periods of world Christianity. In this paper, I consider a selection of historical moments, which together illustrate the broad variety of understandings and practices of conversion. I begin with conversion’s role in the formation of Christianity, followed by conversion in oriental Christianity under the influence of Islam from the seventh century. I then explore conversion in occidental Christianity during the early modern period. Exported to China in the seventeenth century, this conception ultimately failed to translate into the Chinese context. After briefly considering this development, I turn to an understanding of conversion that emerged in African societies, which responded in their own ways to Western missions during late colonialism. Finally, I consider the nature of conversion, de-conversion and re-conversion in secularized societies. This article is in English.

Résumé :
This article takes the post-secular mind-set as a heuristic lens to see the concept of conversion in a new, and perhaps refreshing, way. Missiology, taken here as the theological and therefore critical study of Christian mission, has always had a keen eye on conversion as a concept covering manifold experiences of change in religious faith, behaviour, and allegiance. However, the modern secular outlook has not been able to cater for a good missiological explanation and understanding of ongoing conversions. We will assess the work of two outspoken missiologists of our day, Marion Grau and Bryan Stone, in order to find out what a post-secular outlook on conversion may bring to light. Post-secularity may encourage missiologists to move beyond the secular imaginary of conversion as only a socioeconomic phenomenon on the one hand, and beyond the religious imaginary of conversion as only an answer to a divine call on the other hand. Post-secularity opens up to see the complex contextual entanglement of the religious and the secular realm involved in conversion.1 本文以后世俗的思想倾向作为启发式的透镜,用全新的方式来看待转化的概念。 This article is in English.

This paper deals with development of an n-bit binary to decimal conversion, decimal to n bit binary conversion and decimal to IEEE-754 conversion for floating point arithmetic logic unit (FPALU) using VHDL. Normally most of the industries now a days are using either 4-bit conversion of ALU or 8-bit conversions of ALU, so we have generalized this, thus we need not to worry about the bit size of conversion of ALU. It has solved all the problems of 4-bit, 8-bit, 16-bit conversions of ALU’s and so on. Hence, we have utilized VHSIC Hardware Description Language and Xilinx in accomplishing this task of development of conversions processes of ALU

In a Yucatan village, the main population has recently converted to Protestantism. This situation brought to a redefinition of some elements of local culture and its practical rituals . This process of redefinition, which is realized partly by rejecting the cultural system, practices and rituals of the Catholic organization, and, partly, by a selective manteinance and a reshaping of some of its terms. The het'z mek ', a ritual "traditional" practice, is also celebrated by Protestants on the basis of the emphasis on its functionality over the physical body associated with an "orthopedic" intervention. The shaman's initiation path is rather strongly contrasted by the use of the rhetoric of conversions tale to Protestantism

The thesis focuses on cases of conversions from Judaism to Christianity which occurred from the second half of the eighteenth century to the unity of Italy in the legations pontificals of Bologna, Ferrara and Ravenna. The first chapter will present the beginning of the research work and the reconstruction of the events of the Jewish community of Cento. Subsequently I will introduce some spontaneous and forced conversions that took place in the Cento area. With the second chapter we will enter more specifically of the theme relating to spontaneous conversions. This will be done by analyzing some cases of Jewish women converted during the Napoleonic period in the city of Ferrara. Closing a case of spontaneous conversion that took place after the Restoration. In the third chapter we will analyze the forced conversions doing particular reference to some cases which aroused lively reflection inside the church. It is permissible to coerce an adult Jew, secretly baptized unbeknownst to him as a child, to embrace the Christian religion after having lived for so many years in the faith of their fathers? To this about to propose an interesting reflection by the Master of the Palace Apostolic Thomas Maria Mamachi stretched out in 1785.

Observing the journey of French men and women who converted to Islam, this thesis delves into identity redefinitions on personal and family levels, resulting from the conversion. From experiences of non-practising believers to those of orthodox believers, the conversion is grasped at the intersection of individual itineraries and contemporary religious evolutions. In an era of secularisation, the conversion to Islam, symptomatic of individualisation but also of transgression, remains frequently embedded in an Islamic transnational revival. The conversion symbolizes the crossing of a border between ethnic groups constituted as such and arouses strong reactions within the converter's close circle. More precisely, this research questions the re-organization of family relationships in a situation of mixed marriage. It also looks into the re-configuration of gender relationships and the constitution of new educational models. The parenthood one can observe in these families reveals a strong maternal investment and, more generally, accounts for the creation of new marital and educational norms related to a "neo-communitarian" Islam

Chase, Zachary J. « Pacha and performativity : the colonial conversion of prehistoric Huarochirí ». Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, 2017. http://repositorio.pucp.edu.pe/index/handle/123456789/113297.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In this chapter I consider the religious conversion of Indian populations as the primary objective of Catholic evangelization during the first two centuries of the Spanish colonial period in Huarochirí (in the highlands east of Lima). I demonstrate how these activities were performative acts aimed at the conversion of space, which had implications for the conversion of the Andean past. Due to its unique Quechua manuscript, Huarochirí has been an epicenter both for studies of evangelization and for the reconstruction of the culture and history of the prehispanic and colonial indigenous world. However, the prevalence of ethnohistoric studies and the lack of systematic archaeology in the central axis of the manuscript’s composition has hindered deeper understandings of Huarochirí’s past and the different historicities employed in its reconstruction. Here history is combined with recent systematic archaeological research to provide a view of the different ways the past was understood, codified, and communicated in Huarochirí’s past–evident both in the material record and in the contents of the manuscript itself. The evidence presented challenges the prevalent ethnohistorical reconstruction of Huarochirí’s prehistory, demonstrating how both the contents and the very concept of history were converted as narrative sequences were conflated with historical sequences, obscuring culturally distinct forms of understanding, codifying, and communicating the past in the indigenous Andes. Additional archaeological and historical data provide a glimpse of an «Andean historicity».

This thesis analyzes condominium and apartment development in the downtown Chicago residential market between 1997 and 2011. Specifically, it focuses on developments that converted from apartments to condominiums mainly during the boom years between 1997 and 2007 and developments that converted from condominiums to apartments during the bust years between 2008 and 2011. In the case of the latter, this thesis seeks to determine the reason or reasons that these developments had to convert from condominiums to apartments through a detailed analysis of four such developments. This analysis addresses development drivers including timing, pricing, and location. Additionally, this thesis considers the overall market conditions including supply, demand, economics, and demographics to determine what caused the boom and the ultimate bust of the market and these developments.

Résumé :
The conversion of the convent of San Francisco into a school of architecture in Havana, comes out of my omnipresent desire to work with old structures, my faith in architectural education, and my love for he city in which I was born. My intention was to propose an alternative to conventional restoration and preservation. From the mutilated body of the convent, and the seed of education planted by the monks the new school sprung. The memory of the lost limbs, still present in the city, began to materialize slowly, letting the old structure breathe again.

Résumé :
Music, engineering, mathematics, and many other disciplines have established notations for writing their documents. The effectiveness of each of these notations can be hampered by the circumstances in which it is being used, or by a user's disability or cultural background. Adjusting the notation can help, but the requirements of different cases often conflict, meaning that each new document will have to be transformed between many versions. Tools that support the programming of such transformations can also assist by allowing the creation of new notations on demand, which is an under-explored option in the relief of educational difficulties. This thesis reviews some programming tools that can be used to manipulate the tree-like structure of a notation in order to transform it into another. It then describes a system "4DML" that allows the programmer to create a "model" of the desired result, from which the transformation is derived. This is achieved by representing the structure in a geometric space with many dimensions, where the model acts as an alternative frame of reference. Example applications of 4DML include the transcription of songs and musical scores into various notations, the production of specially-customised notations to assist a sight-impaired person in learning Chinese, an unusual way of re-organising personal notes, a "website scraping" system for extracting data from on-line services that- provide only one presentation, and an aid to making mathematics and diagrams accessible to people with severe print disabilities. The benefits and drawbacks of the 4DML approach are evaluated, and possible directions for future work are explored.

Résumé :
Recent discoveries of vast natural gas reserves in the United States have led to increased domestic natural gas production, resulting in lower prices. Utility and large industrial facilities are performing solid fuel conversions on their boilers to natural gas as a cost-effective and efficient fuel solution. Natural gas is not only economically beneficial but also environmentally efficient with cheaper prices and reduced SO2, NOx, and CO2 emissions. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently released mandatory requirements that directly affect the cost effective operation of solid fuel boilers, resulting in natural gas becoming a more economically appealing choice of fuel for facility operators. As more facilities consider boiler fuel conversions, it is important to understand all facets of the conversion, from the thermal evaluation of the boiler, to the complete design, supply and installation of the new firing system. Zeeco will provide specific details and recommended practices from a recent Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) Boiler solid fuel conversion to natural gas application designed for 1.3 billion Btu/hr of heat input for the maximum continuous steam rating. The information will detail the boiler conversion from a solid fuel fluid bed to a 100% natural gas fired boiler design. Thermal performance results, design and supply of the complete new gas firing system, and installation conversion assistance for the boiler modifications and firing system installation details are also provided.

Résumé :
Processing-In-Memory (PIM) devices usually implement vector instructions to efficiently utilize the large main memory bandwidth. One possible way to vectorize applications for such PIM systems is to convert CPU instructions into PIM vector instructions dynamically. In this work, we present a study on the feasibility of the dynamic conversion between these instructions for the Vector-In-Memory Architecture (VIMA). Our results show that 24 % of the loops from some SPEC-CPU 2017 applications are suitable for this conversion. Furthermore, we conclude that dynamic conversion mechanisms must to be able to efficiently deal with memory access conflicts, a problem present in 99 % of all possible conversions to VIMA.

Résumé :
Abstract Computer integrated manufacturing practices require the sharing of product information between functions, which is the larger context for the work presented in this paper. We are addressing the problem of converting from one feature-based representation to another, where the second representation is for a different application than the first. In particular, we are focusing on converting a design-with representation of a component into representations suitable for manufacturability evaluations. We offer a methodology for describing conversions as a three-step process: filtering information, such as features and geometry, out of the primary representation, selecting those entities that satisfy conditions appropriate to the secondary viewpoint, and aggregating entities into secondary viewpoint features. This methodology is applied to the conversion of a component from the design viewpoint to the injection molding viewpoint for the purposes of tooling cost evaluation. Results from the injection molding conversion, and several others under development, show that our methodology supports conversions at early design stages and suggests broad applicability.

Résumé :
Concrete for airport rigid pavement construction is generally specified to achieve a minimum characteristic flexural strength of 4.5 MPa and acceptance testing during construction aims to verify this key design assumption. The large flexural beam specimens are cumbersome and the testing is expensive. Consequently, industry desires a more convenient test and a laboratory-based conversion to an estimated flexural strength for acceptance testing during production. This research developed and trialed a protocol for the conversion of indirect tensile strength and compressive strength to estimate the flexural strength. The laboratory correlation was encouraging. However, when trialed on a real construction project, the conversions significantly underestimated the measured flexural strength and the risk of rejecting compliant batches of concrete was significantly higher. Further research is required to understand why the reliable conversions developed in the laboratory failed in the field. This may be related to the effect of ambient temperature on 28 day flexural strength, despite the constant curing condition.

Résumé :
Abstract Four fundamental forms for representing rigid body motion, i.e. the rotation-of-vector form, the matrix form, the quaternion form and the screw form, all based on the conventional concept that motion is specified by the movement of a reference point together with an orientation change, are expounded. The inter-relationships among these forms are elucidated. The geometric images of these representation-forms, i.e. the motion mappings, are explained, and an innovative duplex-mapping, a powerful tool for mobility analysis of multi-loop mechanisms and robots, is introduced. An exotic motion representation, based on a concept totally different from the conventional concept, is described. This is a purely geometric representation, a representation by a pair of conjugate curves on respective conjugate surfaces, and is called the conjugation form of motion representation. The conversion from the conjugation form to the rotation-of-vector form and the inverse conversion are described. These conversions, which constitute the essential and featured contents of the Theory of Conjugate Surfaces, have great potential applications in motion design for numerically controlled manufacturing and in surface generation by numerically controlled manufacturing. The basis equations for the conversions, i.e. the three relationship-equations, are deduced. The fundamental equation conjugation, the four conjugato-kinematic entities and the five differential formulas for the inverse conversion are derived.

Résumé :
Glycerol is a by-product in biodiesel synthesis, and its current market condition allows the possibility to transform into value-added compounds. In this work, the enzymatic esterification between glycerol and carboxylic acids of different molar weights was studied to obtain glycerides of industrial relevance. Therefore, eight different carboxylic acids were evaluated: formic, acetic, levulinic, caprylic, capric, lauric, stearic, and oleic. Immobilized lipase from Candida Antarctica was employed as a catalyst. Solvent-free reactions were carried out at 65 °C, 450 rpm, at a molar ratio of glycerol: carboxylic acid of 1:1 and a 1,6% enzyme concentration (based on reagents weight). Conversion of carboxylic acids was followed with time by titration. Under these conditions, acids from octanoic to oleic, which initially formed biphasic systems with glycerol, showed high conversions (68%-80%) and initial reaction rates in the same magnitude order. On the other hand, no enzymatic catalysis was observed with formic, acetic, and levulinic acids. Formic acid exhibited a higher rate and 58% of conversion without catalyst. However, for acetic and levulinic acids, conversion was low in uncatalyzed reactions. Then, for these acids, toluene was added as a reaction solvent. As a result, conversions and initial rates increased for these lighter acids, indicating the need for a non-polar media or a biphasic character to activate the enzyme.

Résumé :
Biofuels derived from cellulosic biomass offer a promising alternative to petroleum-based liquid transportation fuels. Cellulosic biomass can be converted into biofuels through biochemical pathway. This pathway consists of two major conversions: sugar conversion and ethanol conversion. Sugar yield in sugar conversion is critical to the cost effectiveness of biofuel manufacturing, because it is approximately proportional to the ethanol biofuel yield. Cellulosic biomass sugar conversion consists of pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis. Biomass particle size is an important factor affecting sugar yield. The literature contains many studies investigating the relationship between particle size and sugar yield. Many studies focused only on the sugar yield in enzymatic hydrolysis, and failed to take into account the biomass weight loss during pretreatment. This weight loss results in a loss of the amount of potential sugar (cellulose), which continues going into enzymatic hydrolysis. Without considering this loss, cellulosic biomass with a higher enzymatic hydrolysis sugar yield may end up with a lower total sugar yield through sugar conversion. The present study aims to address this issue by investigating the effects of biomass particle size using total sugar yield, a parameter considering both the biomass weight loss in pretreatment and the sugar yield in enzymatic hydrolysis.

Résumé :
Conversion rate (CVR) prediction is becoming increasingly important in the multi-billion dollar online display advertising industry. It has two major challenges: firstly, the scarce user history data is very complicated and non-linear; secondly, the time delay between the clicks and the corresponding conversions can be very large, e.g., ranging from seconds to weeks. Existing models usually suffer from such scarce and delayed conversion behaviors. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning framework to tackle the two challenges. Specifically, we extract the pre-trained embedding from impressions/clicks to assist in conversion models and propose an inner/self-attention mechanism to capture the fine-grained personalized product purchase interests from the sequential click data. Besides, to overcome the time-delay issue, we calibrate the delay model by learning dynamic hazard function with the abundant post-click data more in line with the real distribution. Empirical experiments with real-world user behavior data prove the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Résumé :
This paper presents a computational investigation of the effect of composition modulations on an automotive catalytic converter. The objective is to develop a better fundamental understanding of the converter’s performance under actual driving conditions. Such an understanding will be beneficial in devising improved emission control methodologies by exploiting the catalyst transient behavior. The study employs a single-channel based, one-dimensional, non-adiabatic model. Two types of imposed transients (sinusoidal and step changes) are considered. The results show that composition modulations cause a significant departure in the catalyst behavior from its steady behavior, and modulations have both favorable and harmful effects on pollutant conversion. The departure is relatively significant for catalyst CO and HC conversion performance. The operating conditions and the modulating gas composition have substantial influence on catalyst behavior. Near stoichiometric condition, modulations of HC concentration have relatively greater effect and result in increased CO and HC conversions. Modulations of CO, on the other hand, result in a decrease of CO conversion. The effect of CO modulations on HC conversion is slightly positive. For the conditions studied, NO modulations generally do not result in any significant change in catalyst performance.

Résumé :
The Forestry and Agriculture Sector Optimization Model with Greenhouse Gases (FASOMGHG) has historically relied on regional average costs of land conversion to simulate land use change across cropland, pasture, rangeland, and forestry. This assumption limits the accuracy of the land conversion estimates by not recognizing spatial heterogeneity in land quality and conversion costs. Using data from Nielsen et al. (2014), we obtained the afforestation cost per county, then estimated nonparametric regional marginal cost functions for land converting land to forestry. These afforestation costs were then incorporated into FASOMGHG. Three different assumptions for land moving into the forest sector were run; constant average conversion cost, static rising marginal costs and dynamic rising marginal cost, in order to assess the implications of alternative land conversion cost assumptions on key outcomes, such as projected forest area and cropland use, carbon sequestration, and forest product output.
