PurposeThis article explores how companies in multiple controversial industries report their controversial issues. For the first time, the authors use a new conceptualization of controversial industries, focused on harm and solutions, to investigate the reports of 28 companies in seven controversial industries: Agricultural Chemicals, Alcohol, Armaments, Coal, Gambling, Oil and Tobacco.Design/methodology/approachThe authors thematically analyzed company reports to determine if companies in controversial industries discuss their controversial issues in their reporting, if and how they communicate the harm caused by their products or services, and what solutions they provide.FindingsFrom this study data the authors introduce a new legitimacy reporting method in the controversial industries literature: the solutions companies offer for the harm caused by their products and services. The authors find three solution reporting methods: no solution, misleading solution and less-harmful solution. The authors also develop a new typology of reporting strategies used by companies in controversial industries based on how they report their key controversial issue and the harm caused by their products or services, and the solutions they offer. The authors identify seven reporting strategies: Ignore, Deny, Decoy, Dazzle, Distort, Deflect and Adapt.Research limitations/implicationsFurther research can test the typology and identify strategies used by companies in different institutional or regulatory settings, across different controversial industries or in larger populations.Practical implicationsInvestors, consumers, managers, activists and other stakeholders of controversial companies can use this typology to identify the strategies that companies use to report controversial issues. They can assess if reports admit to the controversial issue and the harm caused by a company's products and services and if they provide solutions to that harm.Originality/valueThis paper develops a new typology of reporting strategies by companies in controversial industries and adds to the theory and discourse on social and environmental reporting (SER) as well as the literature on controversial industries.

Is there is specific Jewish literature in France? The study of Jewish authors and their writing is not sufficient grounds to indicate that such a group exists as a sociohistoriacal entity; that their existence is real and not merely nominal. The question of the existence of Jewish literature — not to be confused with Jewish writing — is a central preoccupation of the community press, in which preferred answers are formulated with reference to an organised group of artists rather than in terms of artistic expression. We will attempt to show how and by what devices the position adopted by the press in question, often lacking in coherence and sufficient justification, has influenced that adopted by certain writers and academics.

Introduction: Over the past few years, there has been a huge surge of interest towards Ayurvedic system of medicine, and it has become a subject of intensive research for various aspects. However, variation in the languages and prevalence of folklore medicines has led to confusion in the true identity of different plants having similar name. Moreover, the description of a plant in the ancient literature is found in verses, having ample use of synonyms. These synonyms have caused controversy in the identification of plants and, hence, the correct source of the plant could be misleading. Background: Since herbal products are generally prepared using extracts of plants known for particular activity, the controversial source sometimes may lead to preparation of inefficacious medicines. Review Results: Substantial efforts are being made to standardize the Ayurvedic crude drugs as well as finished Ayurvedic medicines. However, these initiatives imperatively need establishing correct identity of the plant drug. Moorva is an important controversial drug in Ayurveda. Its roots are used for thetreatment of various disorders. Five different plants are considered as Moorva throughout India. Only preliminary pharmacognostic reports are available on these five species. Conclusion: The present review aims at differentiating these five sources of Moorva roots, i.e., C. fragrans, H. isora, M. arenaria, S. roxburghiana and Marsdeniatenacissima

Résumé :
Management of ambiguous genitalia is highly controversial. This condition was known previously as intersex and presently as disorders of sex development (DSD). There is no consensus regarding the choice, timing and method of sex assignment in neonates with DSD. Consensus conferences could not unify the views of various stakeholders and third parties. This article philosophically examines the nature and origin of such controversies. Misconception, bias and conflicting priorities are identified as the three cardinal sources of controversies. Conceptual duality of sexes, confused notion of sex and gender, bias towards penetrative intercourse, conflict between utopian ideals and reality, unwillingness to compromise are identified as perpetuators of controversies. Suggestions are made regarding sex assignment in various types of DSD based on the understanding of published literature and the author’s personal experience.

Design literature describes an expansion of design activity towards systemic relations, which requires dealing with controversies among multiple actors. These controversies have a sociotechnical nature, given the inextricably of social and technical relations. This research looks at the sociotechnical controversy in COVID-19 design responses to assess the extent of said expansion. A controversial design space mapping was conducted based on a set of web pages found in the international design community which describes design responses for the pandemic. Considered as a representation of a socially-produced design space, the mapping reveals that systemic relations are still overlooked by the design community. A possible explanation for that is the lack of depth in problematizing the COVID-19 pandemic. The research offers, thus, prospective recommendations for a systemic design space for pandemics and other systemic crisis.

The present thesis is divided into three main sections: the first consists of three chapters dealing wi th Geminiani's lifej the second comprises a chapter on his critical reception from his lifetime onwards and six chapters discussing his musical compositions and treatisesj the third contains footnotes to the chapters, a thematic catalogue of Geminiani's works, two appendices, and a bibliography. The opening, biographical section, which is in large part based on documents discovered by the author in the course of his research, is divided into chapters corresponding to the three main phases of Geminiani's life. The first <1687-1714) discusses the period that Geminiani spent in Italy (Lucca, Rome, and Naples>, his musical apprenticeship with Arcangelo Corelli and Alessandro Scarlatti, and the possible factors that induced him to seek his fortune abroad. The second (1714-1732) covers the first period of Geminiani' s residence in London, which saw him achieve his greatest success both as a composer and a violinist, culminating with the publication of his celebrated Op. III concertos (1732). The third (1732-1762> opens with his first sojourn in Paris, an event that marks the beginning of an unset tled period in his 11 fe that persistfJd up to his death. The main portion of the second section is devoted to a descriptive analysis of Geminiani' s works, which comprise three sets of concertos

This dissertation is a study of the controversial literature of the eighteenth century, an examination of certain texts which offended against the religious convictions of the period. The discussion concentrates on four works: Pierre Bayle's Dictionnaire Historique et Critique (1696-1701), Bernard Mandeville's Fable of the Bees (1714-1724), Henry Dodwell junior's Christianity not founded on argument (1742) and David Hume's Dialogues concerning Natural Religion (1779). This dissertation seeks to establish why these texts were so disconcerting, subversive and fascinating to an eighteenth-century audience. These works were not straight-forward declarations of impiety: the authors themselves - with varying degrees of irony - proclaimed their innocence of any subversive design. And the contemporary response was not always a unanimous chorus of disapproval: it was a curious mixture of outraged denunciation, careful negotiation and - in some cases - unqualified praise. While some readers believed that Bayle et al were seeking to undermine the Christian religion, other readers insisted that they were defending its prerogatives in good faith. This dissertation examines how such contrasting interpretations were constructed from the textual evidence and will thus be a contribution to the study of reader-response in the period. The interpretative difference of opinion was due - at least in part - to the presence of incommensurable theological idioms in the period. Bayle, Mandeville and Dodwell employed religious languages which were unfamiliar to an Anglican audience. While some readers shared the necessary theological presuppositions, many contemporaries were simply baffled by Mandeville's Augustinian moralism, Bayle's use of scepticism and Dodwell's rigorous fideism. The eighteenth century was riven by outbreaks of theological controversy: it was a period in which the definitions of orthodox and heterodox opinions were peculiarly fluid and unstable, a period in which a religious consensus could not be taken for granted.

This thesis aims to present and understand various accounts composed by medieval writers against the Isma'ilis and to determine the substance of the arguments forged by each writer to counter the Isma'ilis. Such writings were accepted without question by earlier researchers, and although a revision has been undertaken in more recent studies, the specific nature and orientation of anti-Isma'ili polemics has not been adequately investigated.
Through a careful study of different arguments--arguments at times quite sophisticated and difficult to appreciate fully--, we try to show the evolution and development of the style of anti-Isma'ili polemics, the different temperaments of the polemicists studied, and some of the permanent and complimentary features within this tradition.
An additional question examined in this study is the extent to which social, cultural and political factors had an impact on the shaping of this tradition and the various arguments employed within it.

Résumé: L'objectif de ce travail est celui de suivre la réception critique de l'ouvre de Lúcio Cardoso. J'analyse la répercussion que les romans ( à l'exception du roman Crônica da Casa Assassinada dont l' étude devra être réalisée dans une phase ultérieure ) et les nouvelles de l' auteur ont mérité dans notre milieu littéraire. Ayant débuté dans la fiction avec Maleita en 1934, l'écrivain, catholique et originaire de I'Etat de Minas Gerais, a initialement été affilié au groupe des régionalistes. Mais à partir de 1936, avec la publication de son troisieme livre intitulé A Luz no Subsolo, il a été considéré chez nous comme l'un des amateurs du roman introspectif. Auteur de cinq romans et de sept nouvelles, Lúcio Cardoso a publié la plupart de ses livres pendant les années 30 et 40, c'est-à-dire, des décennies spécialement polémiques dans l'histoire de la littérature brésilienne. Parmi les discussions qui avaient lieu à cette époque-là, on relevra celle qui a opposé le groupe d'écrivains du dit "romance do Nordeste" ( "roman du Nord-Est" ) - considérés de gauche - aux auteurs catholiquesvus comme de droite. .Ayant un tempérament impétueux, Lúcio Cardoso a activement participé à ce débat. Son expressive participation par le moyen d'articles, témoignages et interviews semble avoir eu un poids décisif en ce qui conceme la réception de son oeuvre et celle-ci est, une des idées principales que je soutiens et développe dans mon travail
Resumo: Acompanhar a recepção crítica da obra de Lúcio Cardoso é o objetivo deste traballio. Nele analiso a repercussão que os romances e novelas do autor mereceram em nosso meio literário, exceção feita ao romance Crônica da Casa Assassinada, cujo estudo deverá ser realizado em uma etapa posterior. Estreando na ficção com Maleita em 1934, o escritor, mineiro e católico, foi a princípio filiado ao grupo dos regionalistas, para, a partir de 1936, com o lançamento de A Luz no subsolo, seu terceiro livro, ser considerado um dos cultuadores do romance introspectivo entre nós. Autor de cinco romances e de sete novelas, Lúcio Cardoso publicou a maior parte de seus livros ao longo dos anos 30 e 40, décadas especialmente polêmicas na história da literatura brasileira. Entre as discussões que então se processavam, destaca-se li que opôs o grupo de escritores do chamado "romance do Nordeste" considerados de esquerda - aos autores católicos tidos como de direita. Dono de um temperamento arrebatado, Lúcio Cardoso participou ativamente deste debate. A sua atuação significativa através de artigos, depoimentos e entrevistas parece ter pesado decisivamente para a recepção de sua obra e é esta uma das idéias principais que defendo e desenvolvo ao longo do meu trabalho

The dissertation discusses the work O amanuense Belmiro of Cyro dos Anjos, based on the critical reception, going through some readings and studies undertaken on the mining author and his literary production, to settle in the analysis of the novel's narrative. At this point, it looks like the character Belmiro Borba faces the evils of affection. In other words, how it reacts to evil that print you love, nostalgia, fear and loneliness. Each of these affects the mark with a different pattern of pain. However, our brave hero always reacts the same way; writing their pain on a daily intimate and solitary as a way of redemption. This analytical perspective about the emotions that affect the amanuensis takes us at the end of the dissertation, to reflect on ourselves and our relationship to life.
A dissertação aborda a obra O amanuense Belmiro, de Cyro dos Anjos, partindo da recepção crítica, passando por algumas leituras e estudos empreendidos sobre o autor mineiro e sua produção literária, até fixar-se na análise da narrativa do romance. Nesse ponto, examina-se como o personagem Belmiro Borba enfrenta os males dos afetos. Em outras palavras, como ele reage diante do mal que lhe imprimem o amor, a nostalgia, o medo e a solidão. Percebemos que cada um desses afetos o marca com uma estampa diferente de dor. No entanto, nosso bravo herói reage sempre da mesma maneira; escrevendo sua dor em um diário íntimo e solitário, como forma de redenção. Essa perspectiva de análise acerca dos afetos que acometem o amanuense nos leva, ao final da dissertação, a uma reflexão sobre nós mesmos e sobre nossa relação com a vida.

The chapter provides a case study of the popular, controversial, and ephemeral items printed and published in Norwich during the century after the establishment of printing there. For three quarters of this period Norwich was either the largest or second largest provincial city in England and enjoyed considerable prosperity. The chapter considers the types and subject matter of street literature and controversial items produced and the individuals and businesses that printed and sold them. It considers such items as controversial sermons and religious works, popular chapbooks, execution broadsides, pamphlets associated with the coming of Methodism, poll books, and literature associated with elections. During the 1790s there was also a growth in popular literature calling for political reform.

In my contribution, I analyze texts by Mykola Zerov, Mychajl’ Semenko, and Mykola Chvyl’ovyj, three leading Ukrainian writers of the 1910s and 1920s, that thematize Ukrainian literature of the first years of the twentieth century, criticizing its alleged backwardness and lack of artistic quality. With their rejection of recent tradition, Zerov, Semenko, and Chvyl’ovyj were pursuing an ambitious program of cultural renewal aimed at elevating Ukrainian poetry and prose to the same level as classical and contemporary European literature. A recurrent name in their poems and pieces of criticism is that of Mykola Voronyj, a key figure of early-twentieth-century Ukrainian culture, whose controversial reception sheds light on the extent to which Zerov and Semenko were eager to radically renew Ukrainian literature after its first modernization attempts, which they deemed unsatisfying.

AbstractThis introductory chapter provides the rationale for adopting an interdisciplinary approach to study the implications of shared physical custody arrangements for families and their members. The Chapter gives a rapid overview of the current state of the literature on shared physical custody in the legal, sociological and psychological literature and highlights the uncertainties and controversial aspects still open to exploration in this field. It addresses the specific research needs in order to move forward from the current situation, where evidence on shared physical custody produce results that are scattered across disciplines and hard to compare across contexts. It concludes by arguing that the complexity of shared physical custody implications in terms of health, educational, relational and living standards requires research from different disciplinary fields in order to agree on a comprehensive theoretical perspective, standardize definitions and collect longitudinal and comparable data on the custody arrangements and their normative environments.

Background: Spinal Cords Injuries (SCI) is an important cause of permanent physical disability and firearm injuries are one of its main etiologies.The treatment can be conservative or surgical, with controversies regarding the evaluation criteria and the choice of management. Objectives: Understand the differences in surgical and conservative management, their indications, complications and associated clinical outcomes. Design and setting: A literature review at the University of Pernambuco in Recife city. Methods: A literature review of articles, indexed in the MEDLINE/Pubmed database in April 2021, in English and Portuguese and were published in the last ten years (2011-2021). Results: A prevalence of complete injuries and a number of complications and injuries associated with SCI by firearms was observed. Conservative management was the predominant treatment approach. Surgery was recommended only in the face of specific indications. Antibiotic therapy was recommended, while the use of corticosteroids was contraindicated. Debridement was controversial. Some studies have pointed out a higher incidence of complications in the surgical group, while others have shown similar rates between surgical and non-surgical patients. Many authors have not identified differences in the prognosis of patients treated surgically or conservatively. Conclusions: Patients’ prognosis is determined by the initial injury, regardless of whether the treatment choice is conservative or surgical, but surgical management is associated with a higher incidence of complications. Conservative treatment was shown to be preferable to surgical treatment, except in specific situations.

Linder Theory which is a considerable theory about international manufactured goods trade suggests that international trade in manufactured goods will be more intense between countries with similar per capita income levels than between countries with dissimilar per capita income levels. But in practice, cultural differences between countries may also restrain the density of trade. This literature survey will aim to explain the relationship between income level and culture which may be different for one to another group. G. Hofstede who is an influential cultural anthropologist suggests five different cultural dimension to explain cultural differences between countries. Later, Hofstede calculates the values of different countries in these dimensions. So, in this study, initially, international trade in manufactured goods between similar per capital income levels will be examined. This will be done by comparing per capital income levels of selected countries. OECD data in trade and TÜİK's data (for Turkey) will be used in comparison. Later Hofstede's data will be used. In conclusion, the survey will try to explain how large are the effects of cultural differences between countries with similar income levels in international trade in manufactured goods. Previous studies generally find statistically significant results, but the main framework of these studies suggests controversial results. The study has aimed to commit a literature survey and in this study, comparisons of trade flow between countries are also controversial.

In this article, we propose a reflection on how (anti)racist discourses manifest themselves in language, especially in Lima Barreto's literary production. Using Foucauldian Discursive Studies (EDF) as a basis and in dialogue with Literary Studies, we analyzed excerpts from the author's works "Triste Fim de Policarpo Quaresma" (2015) and "Recordações do Escrivão Isaías Caminha" (2010), seeking to identify and report racist practices from the beginning of the 20th century and understand how they resist and persist today. Considering the literary text as a space for the materialization of discourses, the next topic proposes an analysis of the enunciative excerpts of Lima Barreto's works mentioned, exploring the controversial themes addressed by the author within the historical context in which they were written. Furthermore, the analyzes and data obtained will be used to reflect on possible connections with the present and the discourses of (dis)continuity of this literary object.

Validity is a crucial issue in test development because it represents the accuracy of test score interpretation in describing the measured attribute or construct. Among validity evidence that can be collected to support test score interpretation, the one based on test content incited controversies. The content-based validity evidence includes analyses of the relationship between test content and the construct the test purported to measure. Some authors opposed the use of such evidence in the validation process, arguing that the evidence can only provide hypotheses to be tested in the subsequent processes. Other authors argued that the content validation process provided meaningful information regarding test validity, particularly tests based on content such as achievement tests. Unfortunately, literature regarding such issues hitherto has not addressed the controversies adequately. Furthermore, several techniques for quantifying the content-based validity evidence have been proposed without any other article reviewing and evaluating them in comparison with the others. The current study was conducted to examine propositions made by prominent authors regarding validity based on test content and to compare proposed quantification techniques.

Review question / Objective: Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (LC) had recognized as the standard operation for cholecystectomy . With the development of laparoscopic technology day by day, acute cholecystitis, once considered as unsuitable for immediate surgical treatment, today is accepting by surgeons gradually . Base on congestion and edema of gallbladder, severe peripheral inflammatory reaction, and unclear anatomical formation of Calot trangle, intraoperative or postoperative complications may be occurred when performed ELC for acute cholecystitis. However, with the gradual understanding of the causes of the above complications and the gradual improvement of surgical methods, the intraoperative and postoperative complications have significantly reduced .Therefore, for acute cholecystitis, there still have some controversial about ELC and DLC. Condition being studied: Even though several researches had published about the advantage of ELC comparing with DLC, however, the number of research cases was not large and had some conflicting results (.So there still have some controversies about the feasibility and safety between ELC and DLC. Therefore, we designed and analyzed the available literature to evaluate the efficiency, safety, and potential advantages of ELC compared with DLC.

Following the adoption of the European Green Deal, the traditionally reluctant position of the government of Poland regarding climate neutrality is showing ruptures and has become controversial. The aim of this policy brief is to assess the structural and discursive elements shaping the climate and energy policy of the Polish government. The paper uses a mixed methodology of literature review and qualitative content analysis involving official statements issued by three government bodies between 1 September and 31 December, 2021. The study finds that the reluctance of the Polish government is maintained by frames that presume an incompatibility between ambitious climate action and the will of ‘the people’, as well as structures that can be characterised by a state capture of the energy sector and the dominance of pro-coal actors.

Review question / Objective: Erector spinae plane block (ESPB) has been employed in arthroscopic shoulder surgery (ASS) as an alternative novel interfacial plane block. However, its analgesic efficacy is still controversial. Whether ESPB could improve analgesic efficacy in ASS is what the current meta-analysis seeks to find out. Information sources: We searched different databases including the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science from inception to November 29, 2022, using medical subject headings (MeSH) and free-text terms without language restrictions. The primary purpose of searching was for the selection of RCTs for meta-analysis but also to avoid unplanned duplication and compare reported review methods from other systematic reviews. The following search terms were used for the search of each database: “arthroscopic shoulder surgery”, “shoulder surgery”, “total shoulder arthroplasty”, “shoulder arthroscopy”, and “erector spinae plane block”, “erector spinae muscle”. We also searched for grey literature by supplementary hand searching.

Which households are more exposed to financial risk and to what extent is their debt systemically relevant? To provide an answer, we advance a new classification of the population, adapted from Fessler and Schürz (2017), based on the type of wealth families own and their sources of income. Then, we investigate data from eleven waves of the Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF), a triennial survey run by the U.S. Federal Reserve, to explore the association of different debt configurations and motives to get into debt with our class distinctions. Our new approach allows us to assess competing hypotheses about debt and financial vulnerability that have so far been analyzed separately in disconnected strands of literature. The results of our study reinforce and qualify the controversial hypothesis that relative poverty and inequality of income and access to services have been important factors explaining household indebtedness and its relationship with economic growth over time.

Review question / Objective: Perineural invasion (PNI) is a possible route for metastatic spread in various cancer types, including colorectal cancer (CRC). PNI is linked to poor prognosis. For patients with lymph node positive colorectal cancer, a number of large-scale RCT studies have confirmed that they can benefit from chemotherapy, but there are still many controversies about whether colorectal patients with negative lymph nodes need adjuvant chemotherapy. At present, there is a general consensus that patients with stage II colorectal cancer who have risk factors such as PNI+ need chemotherapy. However, there are many recent literatures that show that patients with stage II colorectal cancer with nerve invasion risk factors can not prolong the OS and DFS of patients. At the same time, chemotherapy increases the toxicity, economic and mental burden of patients. Therefore, we hope to write this review to summarize the current research findings and provide some clinical guidance on whether patients with lymph node negative colon cancer who have perineural invasion should receive chemotherapy. Condition being studied: Patients with high-risk such as PNI+ stage II colon cancer (CC) are recommended to undergo adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT). However, whether such patients can benefit from ACT remains unclear. And recently studies shown that, ACT had no significant benefit among patients with PNI.
