Résumé :
The appearance of a published complete translation of the Qur'an into Yoruba language was a recent occurrence phenomenon compared to the early contact of Islam with Yorubaland. This has been attributed to the fact that the early Imams and Arabic and Islamic teachers concentrated on the teaching of Arabic Language. This article discussed the activities of the Qur'an translators and examined the impact of that on the target audience. A number of grey areas in the Yoruba translations are brought to the fore for possible adjustment. The article employed historical and analytical methods in gathering information from primary and secondary sources. The translation of the Qur'an into Yoruba language remains a major intellectual contribution of the Yoruba Muslim scholars to the dissemination of Islamic teachings. However, the translators are yet to take cognizance of the conditions and prerequisites of translating the Qur'an. This has led to adverse effects on most of the translations of the Qur'an into Yoruba. The article has also brought to focus some improvements in translation of the Qur'an including the nature of the contributions, their merits and demerits. The study proposes a template for improvement so that subsequent translations will not only address contemporary needs but also benefit from an extensive circulation of the Quranic message

Résumé :
"Contributions for the description and translation of the discourse marker ainda por cima in contemporary European Portuguese. Based on a cognitive-functional framework, this paper analyses the different uses of the discourse marker ainda por cima in contemporary European Portuguese and, in a second step, its translation into Spanish, French, English, and German. This analysis is based on data collected in two corpora, CETEMPúblico, which allowed the identification of the functions of the marker in European Portuguese, and Europarl, for the listing of its translations. The research carried out in the source language reveals that the marker has an elaborative value, and more specifically an additive value, always associated with an element of unexpectedness, prefacing a new argument that reinforces the conclusion to be reached, which may (or may not) be the strongest argument in an argumentative scale. The contrastive analysis, in turn, shows the great variety of translational solutions adopted and a value not mentioned in any of the monolingual analyses: the counter-argumentative. The text concludes that (i) the different meanings of the marker in Portuguese are quite close and present themselves in a continuum, linked by family resemblances; (ii) there are important challenges in translating DM; (iii) the analysis of translations may require a reinterpretation of the DM in the source text. Keywords: ainda por cima; discourse markers; translation; translation strategies; contrastive analysis."

The discussion of translation used by students has been investigated long time ago in which the setup of the Second Language Development was firstly established, i.e around 1900s. Many Error Analyses on translation have been analyzed by linguists which become the valuable contributions towards the study of translation. This study deals with error analysis of students’ project on translations of English Department of UNIMED so that there could be drawn some factors that make students are in difficulty in translating texts idiomatically. Qualitative method is used in analyzing this study and all the data are taken from students’ projects and worksheets on translation. Among factors that cause students are in difficulty in translating texts idiomatically are less understanding the meanings of the texts, do not fully master the lexicogrammar, do not understand the language concepts, social context, language use, etc.

Résumé :
In Asia , we find numerous commentaries and translations of the Qur’ān in all Indian and Sri Lankan languages including the Tamil and Arabu-Tamil languages. The following paper is a humble effort to shed light on the commentaries and translations of the Qur’ān written in these languages. The commentaries and translations of the Qur’ān, is the religious field in which the Tamilian scholars engaged their attention. They had religious consciousness while interpreting the Qur’ān. They always relied on the Qurān, the Ḥadīth and the views of the companions of the Prophet while making the interpretation and translation of the Qurān. This article pours light on evaluating Tamilians achievements in uplifting the Islamic studies and to record their contributions as a lesson for the future generations in uplifting the Ummah(Islamic Society).

Résumé :
The reception of Aristophanes has gained extraordinary momentum as a topic of academic interest in the last few years. Contributions range from Gonda Van Steen's ground-breaking Venom in Verse. Aristophanes in Modern Greece to Hall and Wrigley's Aristophanes in Performance 421 BC–AD 2007, which contains contributions from a wide range of scholars and writers, a number of whom have had experience of staging Aristophanes' plays as live theatre. In Found in Translation, J. Michael Walton has also made strides towards marrying the theory of translation to the practice of translating Aristophanes (something I have myself also sought to do in print). And with the history of Aristophanic translation, adaptation, and staging being rapidly pieced together (in the English-speaking world at least, where Hall, Steggle, Halliwell, Sowerby, Walsh, and Walton, for example, have all made their own contributions), much of the groundwork has been laid for a study such as is attempted in this article. Here I aim to take a broad look across a range of translations in order to see how one particular text type within Aristophanic drama has been approached by translators, namely Aristophanes' lyric passages. The aim of this study will be to give both an insight into the numerous considerations that translators take into account when translating Aristophanic lyric and an impression of the range of end products that have emerged over the last two hundred years.

Résumé :
This article gives an account of the paratexts of the Orhan Pamuk translations into Japanese between “2004-2024” and is based on my “descriptive and product-oriented” paratextual research on the Japanese translations of Pamuk literature (Oğuz Baykara, Orhan Pamuk Japoncada, Forum Tauri Press, İstanbul). This study has four basic aims: The first aim is to identify the paratexts of Pamuk Literature in Japanese and create a corpus. The second aim is to obtain empirical data from the Japanese paratexts inside the Orhan Pamuk translations (peritexts: such as the book cover, dust jacket, bands, introduction, preface, epilogue, etc.) and some paratexts outside the book (epitexts: such as translation-related articles, translation criticisms, promotional texts, etc.) and translate them into Turkish. The third aim is to present the translated empirical data to the readers in the form of texts, diagrams, tables, and statistical figures. The fourth and final aim is to determine the position of Orhan Pamuk Literature in the “Turkish Japanese Translation History” in the last 100 years and evaluate its contributions to the global visibility of Turkish Literature in the Japanese context.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This study focuses on the translation of Buddhist scriptures into Chinese, specifically the Faju jing, a Chinese version of the Dhammapada completed in the third century CE. It reveals that the Faju jing is not a straightforward translation but a combination of different sources. The translator, Zhi Qian, faced challenges in integrating multiple translation practices, dealing with diverse original Indian languages, incorporating pre-existing phrases from other translators’ work, and managing divergent opinions within the translation team regarding the translation style. This multi-layered process of translation, involving the participation of multiple translators, also likely occurred in other early translations. These challenges extended beyond mere comprehension of the Indian text, resulting in potential errors and deviations from straightforward translations. It is possible that some mistranslations were a consequence of integrating multiple traditions within the source text, making it difficult for translators to maintain a consistent linguistic framework and leading to errors. Furthermore, this study highlights the remarkable efforts of Chinese translators who collaborated with foreign monks in translation groups. It emphasizes the important role of Chinese translators in integrating diverse translation processes and refining the language to suit Chinese readers. They incorporated earlier translations and modified the language to align with Chinese forms. Overall, this case study sheds light on the complexity of early Chinese Buddhist translations, influenced by the integration of multiple traditions and the localization of the texts. It underscores the significance of Chinese translators in the translation process and their contributions to the development of Chinese Buddhist literature.

Résumé :
This paper makes a comparative analysis of the various Italian translations of the famous Serbian popular poem Kosovka djevojka [The Kosovo Maiden] and illustrates the different interpretations and consequent translations of epic formulas in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Italy. The Parry-Lord oral formulaic theory, together with other important contributions in the field of oral studies, is a starting point for this analysis, which also takes into consideration the socio-cultural context in which these translations were produced. Translation solutions are therefore brought into relation with the poetics of individual translators and especially with the socio-cultural context of their time. Particular attention is devoted to the centuriesold Italian rhetorical tradition, which influenced even the greatest experts in popular poetry in their interpretation of the figures and clich?s typical of oral production.

This Ph.D. dissertation provides with some contributions to the construction of a theory of paratext of the translated book. The theory of paratext is mainly based on the seminal work by Gérard Genette, Seuils, in which the author doesn t enter the field of this kind of paratext. Therefore, this dissertation aims at complementing the theorization by Genette, focusing on the analysis of translators prefaces/postfaces and, among them, of prefaces/postfaces in which translators talk about the translation and their translation project. The theory approaches employed in this work came from Translation Studies, Translation Historiography and the Theory of Textual/Discoursive Genres, based on data gathered in the research of a corpus compounded of French literary works translated in Brazil and published since the middle of the 20th century. The books selected to be examined are part of the collection of the Brazilian National Library, located in Rio de Janeiro, mainly.

Résumé :
This dissertation aims at identifying the common characteristics and trends set by amateur subtitlers on YouTube. By introducing the Community Contributions feature, YouTube has invited viewers from all over the world to participate in the creative process of a video with their translations. Indeed, YouTube is characterised by a participatory culture where the viewer is at the centre of the choices made by the content creators. The subtitles created by the viewers reflect this participatory culture, as the subtitler’s presence is clearly visible. The first chapter introduces the YouTube platform and the world of YouTubers. The figure of the YouTuber shares some characteristics with celebrities, however, their most striking characteristics are authenticity and ordinariness. These are the elements that make YouTubers popular and loved by their audience. The second chapter deals with subtitling and its many forms: from professional subtitling standards to renditions of humour, to fansubbing. All these topics are crucial in the understanding of the YouTube subtitling phenomenon. The third and last chapter contains the analysis of the subtitles from seven selected videos. The analysis identifies the different characteristics and issues of the subtitles. Particular focus is given to the instances of spam and abuse, which led to the Community Contributions being discontinued on the platform.

« Different Contributions to Cost-Effective Transcription and Translation of Video Lectures ». Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de València, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10251/62194.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
[EN] In recent years, on-line multimedia repositories have experiencied a strong growth that have made them consolidated as essential knowledge assets, especially in the area of education, where large repositories of video lectures have been built in order to complement or even replace traditional teaching methods. However, most of these video lectures are neither transcribed nor translated due to a lack of cost-effective solutions to do so in a way that gives accurate enough results. Solutions of this kind are clearly necessary in order to make these lectures accessible to speakers of different languages and to people with hearing disabilities. They would also facilitate lecture searchability and analysis functions, such as classification, recommendation or plagiarism detection, as well as the development of advanced educational functionalities like content summarisation to assist student note-taking. For this reason, the main aim of this thesis is to develop a cost-effective solution capable of transcribing and translating video lectures to a reasonable degree of accuracy. More specifically, we address the integration of state-of-the-art techniques in Automatic Speech Recognition and Machine Translation into large video lecture repositories to generate high-quality multilingual video subtitles without human intervention and at a reduced computational cost. Also, we explore the potential benefits of the exploitation of the information that we know a priori about these repositories, that is, lecture-specific knowledge such as speaker, topic or slides, to create specialised, in-domain transcription and translation systems by means of massive adaptation techniques. The proposed solutions have been tested in real-life scenarios by carrying out several objective and subjective evaluations, obtaining very positive results. The main outcome derived from this thesis, The transLectures-UPV Platform, has been publicly released as an open-source software, and, at the time of writing, it is serving automatic transcriptions and translations for several thousands of video lectures in many Spanish and European universities and institutions.

The Path to Power, by Margaret Thatcher This Project Work focuses on the translation of the seventh and eighth chapters of The Path to Power ("No End of a Lesson" and "Seizing the Moment"), the second of the two volumes of Margaret Thatcher's autobiography, published in 1995 by HarperCollinsPublishers. Aiming to contribute to broaden the Portuguese public’s knowledge of a relevant political figure in the United Kingdom who also assumed worldwide importance in a given period of Contemporary History, the translation of the aforementioned chapters was underpinned by theoretical concepts of translation studies, which, simultaneously, provided both the opportunity to reflect on this universal practice and on some translation issues raised by the autobiographical discourse.

Résumé :
When Turkey became a republic in 1923, modernist and progressive policies gained momentum in Turkish society, stimulating the creation of a new cultural repertoire inclusive of global literature in translation. Turkish policymakers hoped that other nations’ literatures would contribute to updating and refreshing Turkish culture and society. Although the translation activities carried out systematically for this purpose under the auspices of Turkey’s newly founded, state-run Translation Bureau in the 1940s were short-lived, their traces in Turkish literature have proved significant and lasting. This essay will scrutinize the lives and contributions of those Turkish translators employed by the Bureau, as well as offering an overview of twentieth-century Turkish translations of Russian literature.

By introducing the New York Times Multilingual Parallel Corpus (NYTMPC), this contribution illustrates how multilingual parallel corpora can be designed, constructed, and used for Journalistic Translation Research (JTR). Also, by drawing on a theoretical framework interconnecting imagology and journalistic translation, I conduct a pilot study to demonstrate the exploitation of the NYTMPC for studying national image construction in news translation. The results indicate that stereotyped images of China in English news are reconstructed differently in their Chinese and Spanish translations, and the translational factors that underlie this process are uncovered more clearly with the aid of multilingual parallel corpora.

Résumé :
AbstractTranslations are part of gender history. Early Modern translations of the classics not only offer insights into the contributions men and women of that period made to accessing and building knowledge. They also show how gender concepts were reconfigured and adapted to the ideals of the target culture. This article examines the myths of Europa and Alcyone as examples of how Johannes Spreng’s German translation of the Metamorphoses shifted emphases in gender-specific power relations. With the aid of comparative analysis, the author reveals the linguistic and literary techniques Spreng employed to turn Ovid’s heroines into Early Modern housewives. In competing Metamorphoses interpretations as well, idealization and the cautionary example prove to have been key strategies for negotiating the transfer of culture and ideology from antiquity to the Early Modern age and conveying gender-specific norms.

ZusammenfassungThis article cites the example of the Royal Hospital in Chelsea endowed by King Charles II of England in 1681 to discuss interlingual, inter- and intramedial translations processes that apply not only to that hospital (a home for war veterans), but to the entire replanning of London after the major conflagration of 1666. John Evelyn’s English translation of the Parallèle de l’architecture antique et de la moderne by Roland Fréart de Chambray, published in 1664, forms a frame of reference enabling a more precise understanding of the guidelines of urbanist design and the characteristics of the architecture and interior decoration of the Royal Hospital in Chelsea. Both the architect Christopher Wren and the painter Antonio Verrio made reference to the Querelle et Anciens und des Modernes in their contributions to the hospital’s design, thus addressing the political and cultural competition between England and France in the late phase of the Stuart reign by visual means.

Résumé :
ZusammenfassungMy contribution discusses two translations of John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress into Welsh, Taith neu Siwrnai y Pererin ‘The pilgrim’s progress or journey’ (London, 1688) and Taith y Pererin ‘The pilgrim’s progress’ (Shrewsbury, 1699). It begins with a presentation of the translators, their background and interests, and the books themselves. It then concentrates on the earlier text, especially on the introductory letter of the main translator and driving spirit behind the project, Stephen Hughes (1622–1688), in which he remarks on the strategies for translating, on the changes implemented in the Welsh text, and on the marginal paratexts, complemented by some comparisons with the later version. The metrical forms of the Welsh adaptations of the English verses and the Welsh translations of English descriptive names and special terms are considered next. The contribution closes with remarks on the reception of the translation, which shows that it has become part of the Welsh literary canon of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. One result of the analysis, instructive for literary and translation studies, is the insight that due to the translators’ interventions the relation between the source and the target texts becomes opaque: readers can never be quite certain whether they read Bunyan or his translators.

Résumé :
One way of doing research on translation history is to measure and analyse translations (for a classic example see Pym and Chrupała 2005). This quantitative approach normally focuses on published translations between different languages and as such is limited in several respects. First, it focuses primarily on translations as products of translatorial activities. Secondly, translation flows are mostly structured along particular source and target languages, which are more than often not equated with particular political entities. In my contribution I would like to adopt a spatial approach to these translation flows. In doing so, I focus not only on translations as physical objects but also on the agents enabling them, that is authors, translators and finally readers. My aim is to reconstruct patterns of mobility of relevant agents and objects in translation which together constitute a so-called translatorial space. Where do these agents live and work? Where are these works published and where are the readers of these works located? Is the mobility of ideas automatically connected to the mobility of people or objects? In this respect it is not important that a certain language or literature circulates, but how it disseminates beyond its initial place(s) of origin.

Résumé :
The present article intends to produce new historiography about the nineteenth century Romanian women's writing from transnational and relational perspectives. It also takes as its starting point not only the production aspect of women's literary writing, but their reception-- especially by readers or other women writers or translators contemporary to the publication. This approach takes into account all the contributions to the literary field of both canonical and non-canonical women writers. A second approach refers to the fact that women's writing is viewed from an explicitly transnational perspective, underlining the connections between women writers across the world at the literary and translation levels. By using these methods, the students get familiar with social and cultural contexts in which women's writing was produced, promoted, and translated. As a member of the European project Women Writers in History I have taken part into training schools, workshops and conference where along with my colleagues from other 25 countries I have worked for the Women Writers database (www.womenwriters.nl) as an electronic means for teaching literature. The present database contains information on the production of women writers from the Middle Ages up to 1900, and on the reception of their writing in the world. Thus the database offers students the possibility to study these women's writing in their international context and make connections concerning their transnational historiography. The entries for authors refer to biographical details, professional situation, writing achievements (fictional and non-fictional writings), translations, national and international critical reception, allowing the students to analyze women's writing from a comparative perspective.

Résumé :
Taking advantage of computationally lightweight, but high-quality translators prompt consideration of new applications that address neglected languages. For projects with protected or personal data, translators for less popular or low-resource languages require specific compliance checks before posting to a public translation API. In these cases, locally run translators can render reasonable, cost-effective solutions if done with an army of offline, smallscale pair translators. Like handling a specialist’s dialect, this research illustrates translating two historically interesting, but obfuscated languages: 1) hacker-speak (“l33t”) and 2) reverse (or “mirror”) writing as practiced by Leonardo da Vinci. The work generalizes a deep learning architecture to translatable variants of hacker-speak with lite, medium, and hard vocabularies. The original contribution highlights a fluent translator of hacker-speak in under 50 megabytes and demonstrates a companion text generator for augmenting future datasets with greater than a million bilingual sentence pairs. A primary motivation stems from the need to understand and archive the evolution of the international computer community, one that continuously enhances their talent for speaking openly but in hidden contexts. This training of bilingual sentences supports deep learning models using a long short-term memory, recurrent neural network (LSTM-RNN). It extends previous work demonstrating an English-to-foreign translation service built from as little as 10,000 bilingual sentence pairs. This work further solves the equivalent translation problem in twenty-six additional (non-obfuscated) languages and rank orders those models and their proficiency quantitatively with Italian as the most successful and Mandarin Chinese as the most challenging. For neglected languages, the method prototypes novel services for smaller niche translations such as Kabyle (Algerian dialect) which covers between 5-7 million speakers but one which for most enterprise translators, has not yet reached development. One anticipates the extension of this approach to other important dialects, such as translating technical (medical or legal) jargon and processing health records or handling many of the dialects collected from specialized domains (mixed languages like “Spanglish”, acronym-laden Twitter feeds, or urban slang).

Résumé :
Aim/Purpose In this paper we propose an ecosystem for translational learning that combines core learning principles with a multilevel construct that embraces the tenets of translational research, namely, teaming, translating, and implementing. The goal of the paper is to argue that knowledge of learning sciences is essential at the individual, team, and organizational levels in the translational science enterprise. Background The two decades that we can now call the translational era of health and medicine have not been without challenges. Many inroads have been made in navigating how scientific teaming, translating knowledge across the health spectrum, and implementing change to our health systems, policies, and interventions can serve our changing global environment. These changes to the traditional health science enterprise require new ways of understanding knowledge, forging relationships, and managing this new tradition of science. Competency requirements that have become important to the enterprise are dependent on a deep understanding about how people learn as individuals, in teams, and within organizations and systems. Methodology An individual, team, and organizational conceptual framework for learning in translational ecosystems is developed drawing on the learning science literature, a synthesis of 9 key learning principles and integrated with core competencies for translational science. Contribution The translational learning ecosystem is a means by which to understand how translational science competencies can be reinforced by core learning principles as teaming, translating, and implementation intersect as part of the translational science enterprise. Findings This paper connects learning science to tailored principles in a simplified way so that those working translational science with less knowledge of theories of learning and pedagogy may be able to access it in a clear and concise way. Recommendation for Researchers This paper provides a framework for researchers who engage in the education of translational scientists as well as those who are charged with training new scientists in an emerging field critical to health and medicine. Future Research The translational ecosystem described can serve to expand how teaching and learning impact scientific advances. In addition, it serves as a means in which to understand the impact of learning on micro, meso, and macro levels.

Résumé :
When translation is considered in the context of university studies, the key questions – how to teach and how to study translation – become two closely related perspectives, equally essential for teachers of translation. This close association between the perspectives of the teacher and the student is also linked to the requirement to be aware of the decision-making routines used by student translators. Teachers need to anticipate potential issues and equip students with problem-solving methods; in general terms, this means a specific way of thinking and acting for translators. Though highly individual, there are some common features and approaches. This paper is aimed at providing, based on brief references to theoretical literature, analytic insights into several aspects of teaching translation in tertiary education that make an essential contribution to enhanced competence of student translators. It does this by examining, first, the primary aspects of translation studies and translation to be discussed with students; second, a number of the most important approaches and techniques for ensuring productive studies; and third, illustrative translation units. The paper covers some key terminological, contextual, co-textual, and editorial considerations for developing student awareness regarding the prerequisites for efficient translation procedures and for quality translations. In practical terms, tertiary translation studies should be aimed at undertaking course activities that ensure advancement of students’ competence, including general background knowledge and specific skills. Structured theoretical and analytical insights into translation and ready-made sets of priorities and approaches save time for students in understanding the essence of translation and the factors that determine the quality of the target language-for-special-purposes or literary text. In particular, discussions should emphasise interpretative aspects, the poeticity of text, function-based, process-oriented, and product-based approaches, the technique of key focus areas, ways of encouraging flexibility and avoiding literal translation, contextual and co-textual considerations, and text revision.

Résumé :
Exploring the shift in meanings of translating the preposition “on” from English to Vietnamese, the study, besides analyzing the cases of the changes in meanings of the preposition, aims at explaining the cases where the preposition “on” is not translated as “trên” and its Vietnamese equivalents under the cognitive semantics approach. The methods of analysis and synthesis of theories from the available data on the preposition “on” as well as the methods of classifying and systematizing prepositions are applied to English-Vietnamese translation. From the collected data, this study reveals the cases of the shift in meanings of “on” and the characteristics of multiple meanings of the preposition under the cognitive semantics approach. In the course of translation, contextual meanings are used in order to convey the meanings appropriately in the Vietnamese style. The research paper can make some contribution to the teaching of translation and make it a reference material for English learners.

Résumé :
This research addresses two aspects of multi disciplinary product development; understanding what the customer needs and translating this knowledge effectively into a transparent system architecture. A clear overview and understanding of this architecture can be obtained by using function models. How to make an effective translation from the customer needs to function models is not trivial. The approach taken in this research is to discuss, develop, negotiate, align and model the intended users’ workflow of the system. Multiple stakeholders (e.g. buyer, user, marketers, application experts, architects, designers and third party suppliers) should participate in this process. The user workflow is systematically mapped to a system function model. The contributions of this paper can be divided in two. First a systematic and easily applicable design method to capture and validate user requirements in a multi disciplinary design process using explicit workflow models is proposed. Secondly a systematic method of translating user workflow models to system function models will be given.

Résumé :
Both the emergence of the pandemic and lack of knowledge and/or time needed to translate texts related to this topic brought about an increased interest in analyzing Neural Machine Translation (NMT) performance. This study aims to identify and analyze lexical and semantic errors of language aspects that appear in medical texts translated by Google Translate from English into Romanian. The data used for investigation comprises official prospects of 5 vaccines that were approved to be used against the current coronavirus. The focus is on the lexical and semantic errors, as researchers state that these errors made by Machine Translation have the highest frequency compared to morphological or syntactic errors. Moreover, the lexical errors may affect the meaning, the message, and may easily lead to mistranslation, misunderstanding and, therefore, misinformation. The texts to be analyzed are collected from official websites and translated using Google Translate and Google Languages Tools. From the data analyzed, there are 22 lexical and semantic errors that are approached through descriptive methodology. By examining types of errors in translation from English into Romanian and analyzing the potential causes of errors, the results will be used to illustrate the quality and accuracy of Google Translate when translating public health information from English into Romanian, to observe how much the message is affected by the error, in order to sharpen up linguistic awareness. The results of the study can ultimately help improve of the quality of NMT in terms of better lexical selection and attempt to give inputs as a contribution for a more adequate translation into Romanian by Google Machine Translation.

Sunglasses are widely used for eye protection against ultraviolet radiation. However, the current Brazilian manufacturing standards, copied from a European model, do not consider the country’s specific characteristics and only focus on lens spectroscopic conditions. This study evaluates different eyewear frames geometries in relation to scattered light that may reach the eyes through the sides, since the use of sunglasses increase the eye vulnerability due to pupil dilation and facial muscle relaxation. A prototype was developed to calculate this protection by simulating a spherical environment that exposures a mannequin to diffuse and direct radiations. The project still in progress is already functional, but the incomplete arrangement containing one LED isn’t enough to deliver concrete results already shown in previous prototypes with the same objective that showed values in the range of 75%-85% of blocked light.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The COP9 signalosome (CSN) is an eight-subunit protein complex that is highly conserved among eukaryotes. Genetic analysis of the signalosome in the plant model species Arabidopsis thaliana has shown that the signalosome is a repressor of light dependent seedling development as mutant Arabidopsis seedlings that lack this complex develop in complete darkness as if exposed to light. These mutant plants die following the seedling stage, even when exposed to light, indicating that the COP9 signalosome also has a central role in the regulation of normal photomorphogenic development. The biochemical mode of action of the signalosome and its position in eukaryotic cell signaling pathways is a matter of controversy and ongoing investigation, and recent results place the CSN at the juncture of kinase signaling pathways and ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation. We have shown that one of the many CSN functions may relate to the regulation of translation through the interaction of the CSN with its related complex, eukaryotic initiation factor (eIF3). While we have established a physical connection between eIF3 subunits and CSN subunits, the physiological and developmental significance of this interaction is still unknown. In an effort to understand the biochemical activity of the signalosome, and its role in regulating translation, we originally proposed to dissect the contribution of "h" subunit of eIF3 (eIF3h) along the following specific aims: (i) Isolation and phenotypic characterization of an Arabidopsis loss-of-function allele for eIF3h from insertional mutagenesis libraries; (ii) Creation of designed gain and loss of function alleles for eIF3h on the basis of its nucleocytoplasmic distribution and its yeast-two-hybrid interactions with other eIF3 and signalosome partner proteins; (iii) Determining the contribution of eIF3h and its interaction with the signalosome by expressing specific mutants of eIF3h in the eIF3h- loss-of function background. During the course of the research, these goals were modified to include examining the genetic interaction between csn and eif3h mutations. More importantly, we extended our effort toward the genetic analysis of mutations in the eIF3e subunit, which also interacts with the CSN. Through the course of this research program we have made several critical scientific discoveries, all concerned with the apparent diametrically opposed roles of eIF3h and eIF3e. We showed that: 1) While eIF3e is essential for growth and development, eIF3h is not essential for growth or basal translation; 2) While eIF3e has a negative role in translational regulation, eIF3h is positively required for efficient translation of transcripts with complex 5' UTR sequences; 3) Over-accumulation of eIF3e and loss-of-function of eIF3h both lead to cop phenotypes in dark-grown seedlings. These results were published in one publication (Kim et al., Plant Cell 2004) and in a second manuscript currently in revision for Embo J. Are results have led to a paradigm shift in translation research – eIF3 is now viewed in all systems as a dynamic entity that contains regulatory subuits that affect translational efficiency. In the long-term agronomic outlook, the proposed research has implications that may be far reaching. Many important plant processes, including developmental and physiological responses to light, abiotic stress, photosynthate, and hormones operate in part by modulating protein translation [23, 24, 40, 75]. Translational regulation is slowly coming of age as a mechanism for regulating foreign gene expression in plants, beginning with translational enhancers [84, 85] and more recently, coordinating the expression of multiple transgenes using internal ribosome entry sites. Our contribution to understanding the molecular mode of action of a protein complex as fundamental as eIF3 is likely to lead to advances that will be applicable in the foreseeable future.

Résumé :
Our long-term goal is to learn to control (expand and restrict) the host range of baculoviruses. In this project our aim was to expand the host range of the prototype baculovirus Autographa cali/arnica nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AcMNPV) towards American and Israeli pests. To achieve this objective we studied AcMNPV infection in the non-permissive hosts L. dispar and s. littoralis (Ld652Y and SL2 cells, respectively) as a model system and the major barriers to viral replication. We isolated recombinant baculoviruses with expanded infectivity towards L. dispar and S. littoralis and tested their infectivity towards other Lepidopteran pests. The restricted host range displayed by baculoviruses constitutes an obstacle to their further implementation in the control of diverse Lepidopteran pests, increasing the development costs. Our work points out that cellular defenses are major role blocks to AcMNPV replication in non- and semi-permissive hosts. Therefore a major determinant ofbaculovirus host range is the ability of the virus to effectively counter cellular defenses of host cells. This is exemplified by our findings showing tliat expressing the viral gene Ldhrf-l overcomes global translation arrest in AcMNPV -infected Ld652Y cells. Our data suggests that Ld652Y cells have two anti-viral defense pathways, because they are subject to global translation arrest when infected with AcMNPV carrying a baculovirus apoptotic suppressor (e.g., wild type AcMNPV carryingp35, or recombinant AcMNPV carrying Opiap, Cpiap. or p49 genes) but apoptose when infected with AcMNPV-Iacking a functional apoptotic suppressor. We have yet to elucidate how hrf-l precludes the translation arrest mechanism(s) in AcMNPV-infected Ld652Y cells. Ribosomal profiles of AcMNPV infected Ld652Y cells suggested that translation initiation is a major control point, but we were unable to rule-out a contribution from a block in translation elongation. Phosphorylation of eIF-2a did not appear to playa role in AcMNPV -induced translation arrest. Mutagenesis studies ofhrf-l suggest that a highly acidic domain plays a role in precluding translation arrest. Our findings indicate that translation arrest may be linked to apoptosis either through common sensors of virus infection or as a consequence of late events in the virus life-cycle that occur only if apoptosis is suppressed. ~ AcMNPV replicates poorly in SL2 cells and induces apoptosis. Our studies in AcMNPV - infected SL2ceils led us to conclude that the steady-state levels of lEI (product of the iel gene, major AcMNPV -transactivator and multifunctional protein) relative to those of the immediate early viral protein lEO, playa critical role in regulating the viral infection. By increasing the IEl\IEO ratio we achieved AcMNPV replication in S. littoralis and we were able to isolate recombinant AcMNPV s that replicated efficiently in S. lifforalis cells and larvae. Our data that indicated that AcMNPV - infection may be regulated by an interaction between IE 1 and lED (of previously unknown function). Indeed, we showed that IE 1 associates with lED by using protein "pull down" and immunoprecipitation approaches High steady state levels of "functional" IE 1 resulted in increased expression of the apoptosis suppressor p35 facilitating AcMNPV -replication in SL2 cells. Finally, we determined that lED accelerates the viral infection in AcMNPV -permissive cells. Our results show that expressing viral genes that are able to overcome the insect-pest defense system enable to expand baculovirus host range. Scientifically, this project highlights the need to further study the anti-viral defenses of invertebrates not only to maximi~e the possibilities for manipulating baculovirus genomes, but to better understand the evolutionary underpinnings of the immune systems of vertebrates towards virus infection.

Résumé :
The subject of this article is a wooden stela (AAd6) kept in the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. By iconographical and typological criteria, this object is datable to the 22nd Dynasty and probably comes from the Theban area. The stela displays several particularities, among others, one of the longest genealogies preserved on this object type. Alongside a careful investigation of the different iconographical elements and a new translation of the text, this contribution looks into the onomastic and the prosopographical material, examining different titles such as “ḥnk-nw.w-priest in southern Heliopolis” or “wab-priest in chief of the estate of Mut, the great one, the mistress of Isheru.” This study not only reconstitutes the family tree but also connects this object with three others, that are datable to a timeframe from the 21st Dynasty to the beginning of the 26th Dynasty. An excursus focusing on the painting sequence of the text and depictions contributes to a better understanding of the creation of wooden stelae in the Third intermediate Period.

Résumé :
Computing the most specific concept (msc) is an inference task that can be used to support the 'bottom-up' construction of knowledge bases for KR systems based on description logics. For description logics that allow for number restrictions or existential restrictions, the msc need not exist, though. Previous work on this problem has concentrated on description logics that allow for universal value restrictions and number restrictions, but not for existential restrictions. The main new contribution of this paper is the treatment of description logics with existential restrictions. More precisely, we show that, for the description logic ALE (which allows for conjunction, universal value restrictions, existential restrictions, negation of atomic concepts) the msc of an ABox-individual only exists in case of acyclic ABoxes. For cyclic ABoxes, we show how to compute an approximation of the msc. Our approach for computing the (approximation of the) msc is based on representing concept descriptions by certain trees and ABoxes by certain graphs, and then characterizing instance relationships by homomorphisms from trees into graphs. The msc/approximation operation then mainly corresponds to unraveling the graphs into trees and translating them back into concept descriptions.

Résumé :
This study explores the pivotal role of Indian state governments in shaping urban development, contributing nearly half of the capital expenditure from 2011 to 2018. Examining five diverse states—Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu—during the 2021-22 to 2023-24 period, the research reveals a recent surge in attention and financial commitment to urban development. Despite constituting 1-5% of total expenditures, centrally sponsored schemes (CSSs) have emerged as a crucial budgetary component, aligning state priorities with CSS agendas, particularly in infrastructure development. The nuanced strategies of state governments, observed in the emphasis on CSSs and state schemes, underscore the existence of channels translating local demand into the budgetary process. Noteworthy variations among states—Madhya Pradesh’s focus on CSSs, Odisha’s significant investment in state schemes, Rajasthan’s substantial transfers to Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), Kerala’s unique approach with diversified state schemes, and Tamil Nadu’s ambitious plans for urban infrastructure loans—highlight the need for context-specific governance approaches. This study provides valuable insights into the evolving landscape of urban development in India, laying the groundwork for informed policy discussions and strategic interventions.

Journeay, M., P. LeSueur, W. Chow et C L Wagner. Physical exposure to natural hazards in Canada. Natural Resources Canada/CMSS/Information Management, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.4095/330012.

Résumé :
Natural hazard threats occur in areas of the built environment where buildings, people, and related financial assets are exposed to the physical effects of earth system processes that have a potential to cause damage, injuries, losses, and related socioeconomic disruption. As cities, towns, and villages continue to expand and densify in response to the pressures of urban growth and development, so too do the levels of exposure and susceptibility to natural hazard threat. While our understanding of natural hazard processes has increased significantly over the last few decades, the ability to assess both overall levels of physical exposure and the expected impacts and consequences of future disaster events (i.e., risk) is often limited by access to an equally comprehensive understanding of the built environment and detailed descriptions of who and what are situated in harm's way. This study addresses the current gaps in our understanding of physical exposure to natural hazards by presenting results of a national model that documents characteristics of the built environment for all settled areas in Canada. The model (CanEM) includes a characterization of broad land use patterns that describe the form and function of cities, towns, and villages of varying size and complexity, and the corresponding portfolios of people, buildings and related financial assets that make up the internal structure and composition of these communities at the census dissemination area level. Outputs of the CanEM model are used to carry out a preliminary assessment of exposure and susceptibility to significant natural hazard threats in Canada including earthquake ground shaking; inundation of low-lying areas by floods and tsunami; severe winds associated with hurricanes and tornados; wildland urban interface fire (wildfire); and landslides of various types. Results of our assessment provide important new insights on patterns of development and defining characteristics of the built environment for major metropolitan centres, rural and remote communities in different physiographic regions of Canada, and the effects of ongoing urbanization on escalating disaster risk trends at the community level. Profiles of physical exposure and hazard susceptibility described in this report are accompanied by open-source datasets that can be used to inform local and/or regional assessments of disaster risk, community planning and emergency management activities for all areas in Canada. Study outputs contribute to broader policy goals and objectives of the International Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 2015-2030; Un General Assembly, 2015) and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR 2015-2030; United Nations Office for Disaster Reduction [UNDRR], 2015), of which Canada is a contributing member. These include a more complete understanding of natural hazard risk at all levels of government, and the translation of this knowledge into actionable strategies that are effective in reducing intrinsic vulnerabilities of the built environment and in strengthening the capacity of communities to withstand and recover from future disaster events.

Résumé :
The long-term goal of this research is to understand how pollen cope with stress, and identify genes that can be manipulated in crop plants to improve reproductive success during heat stress. The specific aims were to: 1) Compare heat stress dependent changes in gene expression between wild type pollen, and mutants in which pollen are heat sensitive (cngc16) or heat tolerant (apx2-1). 2) Compare cngc16 and apx2 mutants for differences in heat-stress triggered changes in ROS, cNMP, and Ca²⁺ transients. 3) Expand a mutant screen for pollen with increased or decreased thermo-tolerance. These aims were designed to provide novel and fundamental advances to our understanding of stress tolerance in pollen reproductive development, and enable research aimed at improving crop plants to be more productive under conditions of heat stress. Background: Each year crop yields are severely impacted by a variety of stress conditions, including heat, cold, drought, hypoxia, and salt. Reproductive development in flowering plants is highly sensitive to hot or cold temperatures, with even a single hot day or cold night sometimes being fatal to reproductive success. In many plants, pollen tube development and fertilization is often the weakest link. Current speculation about global climate change is that most agricultural regions will experience more extreme environmental fluctuations. With the human food supply largely dependent on seeds, it is critical that we consider ways to improve stress tolerance during fertilization. The heat stress response (HSR) has been intensively studied in vegetative tissues, but is poorly understood during reproductive development. A general paradigm is that HS is accompanied by increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and induction of ROS-scavenging enzymes to protect cells from excess oxidative damage. The activation of the HSR has been linked to cytosolic Ca²⁺ signals, and transcriptional and translational responses, including the increased expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs) and antioxidative pathways. The focus of the proposed research was on two mutations, which have been discovered in a collaboration between the Harper and Miller labs, that either increase or decrease reproductive stress tolerance in a model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana (i.e., cngc16--cyclic nucleotide gated channel 16, apx2-1--ascorbate peroxidase 2,). Major conclusions, solutions, achievements. Using RNA-seq technology, the expression profiles of cngc16 and apx2 pollen grains were independently compared to wild type under favourable conditions and following HS. In comparison to a wild type HSR, there were 2,776 differences in the transcriptome response in cngc16 pollen, consistent with a model in which this heat-sensitive mutant fails to enact or maintain a normal wild-type HSR. In a comparison with apx2 pollen, there were 900 differences in the HSR. Some portion of these 900 differences might contribute to an improved HSR in apx2 pollen. Twenty-seven and 42 transcription factor changes, in cngc16 and apx2-1, respectively, were identified that could provide unique contributions to a pollen HSR. While we found that the functional HS-dependent reprogramming of the pollen transcriptome requires specific activity of CNGC16, we identified in apx2 specific activation of flavonol-biosynthesis pathway and auxin signalling that support a role in pollen thermotolerance. Results from this study have identified metabolic pathways and candidate genes of potential use in improving HS tolerance in pollen. Additionally, we developed new FACS-based methodology that can quantify the stress response for individual pollen in a high-throughput fashion. This technology is being adapted for biological screening of crop plant’s pollen to identify novel thermotolerance traits. Implications, both scientific and agricultural. This study has provided a reference data on the pollen HSR from a model plant, and supports a model that the HSR in pollen has many differences compared to vegetative cells. This provides an important foundation for understanding and improving the pollen HSR, and therefor contributes to the long-term goal of improving productivity in crop plants subjected to temperature stress conditions. A specific hypothesis that has emerged from this study is that pollen thermotolerance can be improved by increasing flavonol accumulation before or during a stress response. Efforts to test this hypothesis have been initiated, and if successful have the potential for application with major seed crops such as maize and rice.
