Abstract This article is a response by the author to the contributions to the Historical Materialism symposium on Allegory and Ideology. The reply is framed in terms of the different theoretical strategies through which the articulation of ‘Marx’ and ‘Freud’ has been carried out, namely the precarious syntheses of Freudo-Marxism, the homological method pioneered by Lucien Goldmann, and the theory of allegorical levels and transcoding explored in Allegory and Ideology. It critically engages with the openings and challenges posed by the various contributions to the symposium, focusing in particular on matters of periodisation, and concluding with a reflection on how a theory of allegorical levels can be complemented by a materialist understanding of the ‘category’.

Résumé :
Karl Marx (1818-1883) and Friedrich Engels (1820-1895) created the philosophical conception of historical and dialectical materialism with a deep and critical theoretical and methodological perspective to understand the dynamics of reality. In this sense, the objective of this research is to understand the great transmutations of the historical processes of humanity. It is a bibliographical and documentary research. An electronic survey of articles, dissertations and theses was conducted in the SCIELO database and in the CAPES journal portal. Historical and dialectical materialism, from the methodological and educational point of view, seeks to understand the social production of the real and existence of humanity. At the same time, this method relates to various forms and modes of movement. In conclusion, it is believed that the method of historical and dialectical materialism is a kind of methodological skeleton more suitable for discussions about work and the metamorphoses of social phenomena, as well as for the conceptions of world and reality. The understanding of the real is not restricted to everything that is immediately given, observed, thought, perceived or felt.

Résumé :
This paper examines how the concept of dialectical materialism has evolved in the history of philosophy and its distinct features based on the work of Marx and Engels. Dialectical materialism, as a fundamental philosophical outlook of Marxism, is one of the greatest contributions of Marx and Engels in the history of philosophical discourse. The importance of dialectical materialism is far beyond imagination in analyzing the nature of things and human social development in a manner that conceiving social development against a linier and disconnected mode of cognition and things. As being foundational to Marxian thought, dialectical materialism deal in wide range of subjects, such as understanding of the nature of things and change, the nature of man and also the nature of social development. The aim of this paper is, therefore, to critically analyze the concepts of dialectical materialism in terms of its origin, evolution, and how it was understood by Marx and Engels in connection with its divergence from both mechanical materialism and metaphysical conception of the nature of things.

The ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has had a profound impact on people’s wellbeing. Here, we proposed that an individual characteristic might be associated with wellbeing; that is, materialism. Specifically, we conducted three studies (total N = 3219) to examine whether people with high levels of materialism would experience poorer wellbeing (i.e., anxiety and depression, in the current case). The results showed that materialism was positively associated with depression (Studies 1A, 1B and 2) and anxiety (Study 2). Moreover, such a relationship was mediated by people’s perceived threat of COVID-19 (Study 2). These findings were observed in both Chinese and American people. The findings are discussed in terms of their theoretical and practical contributions.

This article constitutes a substantial introduction to the thematic issue “Matters.” After introducing briefly the scattered constellation described by some as “new materialism” or “the material turn,” as well as its main concepts and methods, I offer a deconstructive reflection on “the turn” by challenging a series of theoretical gestures meant to coalesce the turn to materiality in contemporary continental philosophy—starting with the exclusion of the much maligned “linguistic turn” and the opposition to an “old” concept of matter presented as passive, inert, and mechanistic. I analyze how these two exclusions—precarious as they may be—allow for a relative coalescence of the new “scene” while betraying its essential heterogeneity and self-inadequacy. I thus interrogate the conditions that make the position of a “new” materialism possible, giving it force and necessity, while questioning what the production of this so-called novelty potentially obfuscates. After raising a series of questions related to new materialism’s conceptuality, I introduce the contributions that make up the thematic issue. I also provide a substantial bibliography to help the reader navigate the material turn as well as its various critiques from the perspectives of philosophical history, object-oriented ontology, social and ethico-political theory, deconstruction, critical race studies, or other perspectives on materialist theory.

Résumé :
This article examines the conceptualisation of materialities in feminist theory through two paradigmatic examples: (French) materialist feminism and new materialisms. What can be interpreted as an opposition between different paradigms can also be disrupted as long as we define what matters as a relation or a process rather than a substance or a lost paradise to which we should return. New materialisms indeed help to investigate aspects such as corporeality, human/non-human interaction and textures, but the role of feminist materialism is invaluable in highlighting the social structures of power relations; more than ever, it makes a decisive contribution to the understanding of domination, such as the social relations and hierarchies implied in femosecularism conceptualised in this article. Ultimately, the tool of hybridised materialisms aims to articulate the theoretical perspective of materialist feminism with that of the new materialisms – in order to avoid the binarism between materiality and culture.

Résumé :
Abstract “Art Work as Life Work: Lu Märten's Feminist ‘Objectivity’” highlights the feminist stakes of German feminist-materialist art historian Lu Märten's interventions in the interwar discourses on art and labor, on objectivity (Sachlichkeit), and the new media of film and radio. The essay argues that Märten's contributions to these areas sit squarely within more familiar narratives of materialist aesthetics and Weimar culture (from Walter Benjamin's epochal Artwork Essay to the Bauhaus) and that they do so on account of her heterodox reading of Marx and commitment to Spinoza's monism. In Märten's view, this non-binary materialism offered an alternative, non-Hegelian route to a materialist conception of art or as she preferred to say, form. In contrast to art history's academic formalism, Märten espouses a notion of form that does not maintain art's autonomy but instead connects art to other social fields. Here form always evolves out of informality. The essay traces the close bond between art work and life work across Märten's multiple publications, including her theoretical magnum opus Essence and Transformation of Forms/Arts and her studies on The Economic Conditions of Artists and The Female Artist. In so doing, the text contributes to revisiting the firm boundaries that art history has drawn between objects and communities.

This article explores the contributions made by Raymond Williams and E.P. Thompson to communication for social change theory. It argues that Williams’ critique of technological determinism, his notion of the ‘structure of feeling’, analysis of culture and cultural materialism as a mode of analysis contributes to the theorising of communication for social change. This article also examines Thompson’s contributions to historiography, his engagement with the contextualised histories of ordinary people and their contributions to the making of the public sphere in 18th-century England. This article argues that the contributions made by these two theorists enable a critique of structures and a re-centring of agency, both of which are critical to a renewal of communication for social change theory.

Résumé :
Until recently, most commentators, including ecological Marxists, have assumed that Marx’s historical materialism was only marginally ecologically sensitive at best, or even that it was explicitly anti-ecological. However, research over the last decade has demonstrated not only that Marx deemed ecological materialism essential to the critique of political economy and to investigations into socialism, but also that his treatment of the coevolution of nature and society was in many ways the most sophisticated to be put forth by any social theorist prior to the late twentieth century. Still, criticisms continue to be leveled at Marx and Engels for their understanding of thermodynamics and the extent to which their work is said to conflict with the core tenets of ecological economics. In this respect, the rejection by Marx and Engels of the pioneering contributions of the Ukrainian socialist Sergei Podolinsky, one of the founders of energetics, has been frequently offered as the chief ecological case against them. Building on an earlier analysis of Marx’s and Engels’s response to Podolinsky, this article shows that they relied on an open-system, metabolic-energetic model that adhered to all of the main strictures of ecological economics – but one that also (unlike ecological economics) rooted the violation of solar and other environmental-sustainability conditions in the class relations of capitalist society. The result is to generate a deeper understanding of classical historical materialism’s ecological approach to economy and society – providing an ecological- materialist critique that can help uncover the systemic roots of today’s “treadmill of production” and global environmental crisis.

AbstractLenin's name has been coupled with that of Marx as the co-founder of the theory of ‘Marxism-Leninism'. However, despite his emphasis on the role of revolutionary theory, Lenin's original theoretical contributions to the development of Marxism were very limited. His talents were those of a determined revolutionary, in the populist tradition of Chernyshevsky, and a brilliantly effective propagandist and political organiser. His contribution to ‘Marxism-Leninism’ was to modify Marxist orthodoxy in such a way as to integrate the political and organisational principles of revolutionary populism into Marxism, on the basis of Plekhanov's ‘dialectical materialism', whose distinctive interpretation of Marxism was Lenin's constant guide and inspiration. In this paper I want to argue that Lenin never broke from the theoretical and political traditions of Russian populism, but completed Plekhanov's project by assimilating Marxism to the very different theoretical framework of populism.

Résumé :
Tax evasion remains a persistent concern that continues to captivate the attention of scholars and professionals alike, owing to its profound implications for a nation's economic landscape. The objective of this study is to assess the impact of money ethics, intrinsic religiosity, and extrinsic religiosity on tax evasion. Specifically, the study aims to examine the moderating effects of intrinsic religiosity, extrinsic religiosity, gender, and materialism on the relationship between money ethics and tax evasion. A purposive sampling technique is employed to select participants for this study, and primary data is collected through the direct distribution of questionnaires to respondents. The sample size consists of 100 participants. Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) is utilized as the data analysis technique. The findings of the analysis reveal that money ethics and extrinsic religiosity positively influence tax evasion, while intrinsic religiosity has a negative impact on tax evasion. Moreover, the moderating effect of intrinsic religiosity weakens the relationship between money ethics and tax evasion, whereas the moderating variables of extrinsic religiosity, gender, and materialism do not demonstrate significant effects on the relationship between money ethics and tax evasion. This research provides practical contributions to the government in understanding the reasons behind taxpayers' behavior in engaging in tax evasion.

AbstractNeo-Gramscians have made invaluable contributions to expanding traditional IR/IPE theory. Nevertheless, as the following article indicates, the ontological, epistemological, and methodological positions they adopt results in a rather one-sided interpretation of Antonio Gramsci and a partial, at times erroneous, account of the nature of the current global system. In highlighting these oversights, the neo neo-Gramscian approach presented here – rooted in a critical realist philosophy of science, specifically ‘emergentist materialism’, and involving a more complete reading of Gramsci – seeks to lay the basis for the elaboration of a more convincing theoretical and conceptual framework to analyse the changing dynamics of contemporary world order, without which the Coxian critical theory dream of engendering social emancipation cannot be fully realised.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine young consumers’ financial behavior (e.g. saving) and pro-environmental behavior (i.e. reduced consumption and green buying) as effective proactive strategies undertaken in the present to satisfy materialistic values and maximize well-being. Design/methodology/approach The study is based on an online survey among a panel of young American adults (N = 968). Findings The study finds a positive effect of materialism on personal well-being and negative effects on financial satisfaction, proactive financial coping and reduced consumption, but no effect on green buying, a separate and distinct pro-environmental strategy. Both proactive financial coping and reduced consumption are positively associated with subjective well-being. Research limitations/implications Future research should re-examine conceptualizations of materialism in the context of climate change and the meaning of possessions in the global digital economy; studies could also focus on the specific well-being effects of reduced consumption and alternative pathways to align materialistic and environmental values. Practical implications Consumer education should look to models of financial education to demonstrate how limited natural resources can be managed at the micro level to enhance consumers’ subjective well-being, as well as reduce resource strain at the macro level. Originality/value Key contributions are the examination of materialism and consumption in the dual contexts of financial and environmental resource constraints and the effects of these key macro-social phenomena on consumers’ perceived well-being. Another study highlight is the differentiation of two strategies for proactive environmental coping, of which only one, reduced consumption, increased personal well-being and decreased psychological distress.

Purpose of the study: To estimate the degree of relationships between financial attitude, materialism, consumption by status, and consumer perception of the chosen payment method, and impacts on indebtedness.Methodology / approach: We used the survey technique, which collected data from 161 respondents. The quantitative data obtained were analyzed through structural equation modeling, as well as conditional mediation and moderation tests.Main results: Individuals with weak financial attitudes tend to be more materialistic and to consume more by status, and individuals with materialistic and status-driven tendencies are more prone to debt. No relationship was identified between the chosen means of payment and indebtedness. On the other hand, the mediation of the financial attitude in debt mitigation was observed.Originality / relevance: Despite the vast literature on the theories cited in the paper, the relationship between the financial attitude and the buying behavior of the Brazilian consumer had not yet been established, from an attitude perspective as a predictor of behavior.Theoretical / methodological contributions: The work contributes to studies on the inversely proportional advance relationship between financial attitude, status consumption and materialism, in which the latter constructs are discouraged by the individual's trait with that first characteristic. The study also identified the mediation of financial attitude as a debt reduction mechanism.

Résumé :
Purpose: This research aims to analyze whether productivity orientation, change-seeking, and materialism influence the consumption of collectible experiences in different tourist destinations.Design/methodology/approach: It was necessary to carry out a quantitative research, of a single cross-section, with a non-probabilistic sampling for convenience. An online survey was adopted using the snowball technique to collect the data. The sample has 601 participants and the data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling. An online survey was conducted over 7 days, starting on October 12, 2020, and concluding on October 18, 2020, to analyze and interpret the data collected from the survey. Originality: The findings of this investigation show that individuals who collect tourist experiences are oriented towards productivity. That is, they are concerned with using time productively and doing as many activities as they can, like visiting as many tourist destinations as possible in the shortest possible time.Findings: The results indicate that productivity orientation and change-seeking positively influence the consumption of collectible experiences in different tourist destinations. That shows that individuals want to visit new places and have different experiences while optimizing their time and changing their routine. Theoretical/methodological contributions: The productivity orientation positively influences change-seeking. In turn, it is emphasized that materialism does not have a positive influence on the consumption of the aforementioned experiences.

Worth welcomes Amin’s call for a renewal of Internationalism, but he is critical of the “significant shortcoming of understanding an internationalist strategy around a traditional collection of national struggles.” Recalling Rosa Luxemburg’s contributions to the second International at the 100th anniversary of her brutal murder, he notes: Luxemburg … condemned any form of nationalism as a tool used by the bourgeoisie in order to divide the proletariat….[F]or Luxemburg, the whole notion of dialectical materialism should be understood not through the development of existing structures but as a process where new structures emerge and develop over time. Likewise, Internationalism should not be something restricted by structures of the present, nor by pre-existing norms such as national sovereign, but instead be understood as a mechanism that could move beyond the confines of the present towards the realms of the ‘possible.’”

The present study aims to bring into light reflective dialogues over child development from the contributions brought by cultural-historical psychology and critical-historical pedagogy in the field of early child education. The bibliographic-analytical research supports its analyses in the epistemology of the dialectical-historical materialism when the human development conditioned to the real circumstances of existence is understood. The thematic categories found in the analyzes were the periodization of child development and the organization of its teaching practices, which restated that the historical totality permeated by the conditions of life and education are determining factors for psychic development. As consequence, it was possible to conclude that the pedagogical treatment based on the theoretical matrices presented for early child education, proposes a break of the naturalist conception, emphasizing the need for pedagogical intentionality based on the periodization of development.

It was written from the analysis of contributions by authors of this area that reflect on this theme and from Marxist authors who analyze the method and the production of knowledge from dialectical historical materialism. To do so, it chooses two premises. The first refers to the production of knowledge as one of the expressions of human activity that, in the movement of reality, seeks the apprehension of particularities as expressions of concrete thought. The second refers to the defense of the necessary linkage of research in the field of social work with the social meaning of this profession, which, in the contemporary era, bears itself in a direction sustained in its current and radically current political ethical project.

This volume explores new ways of understanding medieval and early modern conceptualizations of nature in light of current developments in critical animal studies, ecocriticism, new materialism, as well as our expanding knowledge of premodern philosophy, medicine, and encyclopedism. The articles engage numerous disciplines, including philosophy, history of science, history of ideas, and Anglo-Saxon, French, and English literary studies; their approaches represent a broad range of Anglophone and Continental European academic traditions. Collectively, the volume brings to light tensions and contradictions in premodern ideas of “nature” and “the natural.” The “versions of the natural” that emerge are more ecological and less anthropocentric than in much previous work in this area, their emphases correspondingly more philosophical, scientific, even secular, than religious or theological. All contributions combine the detailed study of specific texts and problems with wider historical, theoretical, or philosophical inquiry.

Résumé :
Alister Hardy was one of the pioneers of the scientific study of spiritual experiences (SE); however, his work and insights have not received the attention they deserve. This paper, based on an in-depth analysis of Hardy’s own writings, presents his main methodological and epistemological contributions for advancing the investigation of SE. Hardy’s main epistemological propositions were as follows: the transcendent as the core of spirituality and SE as a major source of R/S beliefs; a nondogmatic approach, acknowledging that Darwinian evolution does not imply materialism and that mind is not reducible to matter; and a call for studies of psychic experiences and considering an expanded naturalism, including the “para-physical”, that could lead to a perennial philosophy and a natural theology. His methods focused on phenomenological classification and the development of a natural history of SE based on studies with proper ecological validity on the experimental and the experiential, mixing large surveys of the general population with in-depth qualitative studies of the most prominent cases. In addition, it would be worth investigating developments of SE throughout a person’s life. Bringing back Hardy’s contributions will foster a better understanding of the history of the scientific study of SE and provide key insights for moving it forward.

Contemporary debates on freedom traverse questions concerning metaphysics, the mind/body relationship, evolution, morality, and religion. Throughout his life, the French philosopher Henri Bergson dealt with these questions from the perspective of time, believing that spatializing these problems led to inadequate solutions. That freedom was a centralizing concern in his oeuvre can be demonstrated in the way he approached these questions in challenging determinism, materialism, mechanism, and finalism. Bergson studies, despite noting the importance of freedom for Bergson, have focussed on intuition and duration as his seminal contributions. Bergson himself never thematized freedom in any specific way, but by working with a positive conception of freedom, as a creation of the new within the fiow of duration, freedom can be seen as a centralizing motif in his work. By clarifying the nature of freedom and its centrality, the ground can be cleared for a Bergsonian intervention into contemporary debates on freedom.

In view of the concern with the insertion of critical environmental education in school, we seek theoretical-methodological contributions in critical historical pedagogy. In this sense, this article will address theoretical reflections that are born within the “Grupo de Pesquisa em Educação Ambiental” - Unesp-Bauru and that were issued during the 1st Symposium on Dialectical Historical Materialism and Research on Science Education and Environmental Education. Thus, we approach the question of the content of critical environmental education from the curriculum design of critical historical pedagogy. Despite the question of the content and form of Environmental Education being present since its origins, we understand that the indepth debate on what should be its content in the school context is still absent. In this sense, assuming the school insertion of critical Environmental Education as the core of the curriculum is a way to overcome its limitations in theory and practice for the human formation necessary for social transformation.

Scientific advances have made great contributions into the understanding of biological basis of psychopathology. Materialism has become a very popular concept. In this thesis, I shall argue that both the mind and the brain exist though as separate entities, but that their functions are related. I shall rely as much as possible on what happen in psychotic states as well as in states of introspection. Thus by way of objectives, this paper sets out to show that there is no identity between the mind and the brain though both are related functionally. The nature of this relationship is such that all actions including the reflexes are under the direction of the mind but are carried out by the brain and other parts of the nervous system. I maintain that the view that there is no immaterial component in Man cannot be sustained. Rather than proclaim identity between mind and brain, we should endeavour to Interpret the relationship between them.

Abstract The aim of this work is to understand the emergence of an individual in modern society. We understand that both individual and society are made of the same material and historical reality, so all the social science contributions on the perspective of dialectical historical materialism are very important. This way, the apprehension of the idea of individual and how it has developed in History is crucial. Similarly, the notion of hegemony, presented in Gramsci, was essential for this study, since it has contributed to elucidate and clarify the material and historical conditions of individual in the liberal society. At the end, the analyses point out an individual wrought by liberalism in consonance with the system of the industrial capital, showing that the “free”, “equal” and “particular” individual is an illusion because its accomplishment presupposes a different reality from what has been shown. Résumé :
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present evidence about cultural differences between Mexico and China, and analyze their significance when implementing an innovative financial model. Specifically, the authors analyzed the case of the Yunus model (or Grameen model), originally developed in Bangladesh and further implemented in China and Mexico. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses a comparative quantity study to test the cultural difference which affects the innovative financial model implementation. A materialism and credit overuse value scale (Ponchio and Aranha, 2008; Richins, 2011; Roberts and Jones, 2001) is applied to analyze cultural differences with a sample of 250 people in each country. Findings The results show that the survey responses are statistically significantly different in these two countries. The Mexican sample shows a greater affinity with luxury and bragging. The Chinese sample shows more responsibility toward credit. Recommendations for the implementation of the innovative financial model considering cultural differences are suggested. Practical implications Based on the survey results, gender equality, greater caution with young borrowers, financial education programs, and strict liability agreements to ensure credit repayment, especially for Mexico, are suggested, with the aim of enabling microfinance institutions to increase the successful implementation of the Yunus model in China and Mexico. Originality/value There are few existing cultural comparisons between China and Mexico. Therefore, one of the relevant contributions of this work is to shed light on the cultural differences of these two important emerging economies for future research. Additionally, the authors applied a materialism and credit overuse value scale developed to assess consumer behavior as a proxy for culture. The results are relevant for further usage of this scale as a tool to help adapt innovative financial models for application in other cultures.

Both new and historical materialisms have attracted a reputation for leading to ‘bad politics’. Historical materialisms have been accused of reducing too much to material relations and their production, whereas new materialisms have been accused of avoiding politics completely. This article reads the critique directed at materialisms against Hannah Arendt’s exceptional distrust of matter. Focusing on her concept of ‘worldliness’, it grapples with the question ‘why do we need an attention to matter in the first place?’ The attempted re-reading takes place through a feminist and postcolonial lens that draws out the contributions and failures of Arendt’s (anti)materialist framework in its banishing of matter from politics. Arendt’s focus on the prevention of dehumanisation further serves as a means to discuss materialism’s risk in negotiating the tension between deindividuation and dehumanisation.

Résumé :
Cognitive Linguistics started from the 1980s, and it has become a mainstream since the end of the last century and the beginning of this century, which has got widespread attention, with a nickname as the third revolution in linguistic circles after the Saussurean Revolution and the Chomskyean Revolution. According to the dialectical principle of “negation of negation”, theoretical research is always advancing, thus the linguists are beginning to think of the shortcomings of Cognitive Linguistics and new developments in the future. For instance, Dabrowska (2016) pointed out the seven deadly sins of Cognitive Linguistics, which, we think, are overstated and too radical. Cognitive Linguistics has its own historical significance and makes great contributions to the criticism of Saussurean “Linguistic Apriorism” and Chomskyean “Linguistic Nativism”, but Cognitive Linguistics also has its own weaknesses, which are to be exposed in brief in this paper. We have also tried to propose “Embodied-Cognitive Linguistics as a revision in order to emphasize the philosophical views of “materialism” and “humanism” as a basic start in linguistic research.

This article conducts an analysis of the relationship between school education and the development of thinking through concepts, based on the contributions of the historical-cultural psychology and the historical-critical pedagogy. The text is part of a theoretical-conceptual research that seeks to understand the relationship between psychology and education, based on the theoretical-methodological approach of historical-dialectical materialism. To present the results, three axes of analysis were selected: human psyche from the perspective of the historical-cultural psychology and the role of conceptual thinking in its development process; the concept as an activity of thought; and the role of school education in the process of conceptual development. The text highlights that the concept is an activity composed of a series of thought processes that reach their formative peak from adolescence onwards. However, it emphasizes that this process does not occur naturally, requiring that systematized content such as science, art, and philosophy is internalized by students to enable the development of this new form of thinking.

Résumé :
Instagram not only offers an arena for the fulfillment of basic human desires but also cultivates new types of multifaceted desires and consumptions in Web 2.0 environments. This study aims to examine a wide variety of dispositional, psychological, and attitudinal predictors of Instagram consumption and selfie-and-groupfie cultures. Three cross-sectional surveys (Study 1 (N = 108); Study 2 (N = 140); Study 3 (N = 557)) were conducted, and empirical data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) with Mplus 8.0. Study 1 shows associations among appearance-related self-confidence, appearance-related actual–ideal self-discrepancy, materialism, and Instagram consumption. Study 2 confirms relationships among weight status perception, self-esteem, eating disorder, malicious envy, and Instagram consumption intensity. Study 3 further demonstrates dynamic associations among eating disorders, perceived mate value, narcissistic grandiosity, envy, social comparison, intrasexual competition for mates, and frequency of posting selfies/groupfies on Instagram. Theoretical contributions to the psychosocial and human aspects of the Web 2.0 digital culture, managerial implications for online dating cultures, and practical implications for consumption markets including social media-based health communication, cultural communication, and marketing communication are discussed.

Résumé :
This article intends to approach two contemporary contributions, by the theorists Mark Fisher and Laurent Bove, who, each in his own way, claim the actuality and effectiveness of certain concepts and notions of the seventeenth-century philosopher Benedictus Spinoza (1632 – 1677). In Laurent Bove, the foundation and dissemination of a political clinic, at the same time, singular and social, unfolds under the relation between conatus and freedom, always corresponding to the affective and intellectual rules of the autonomous project of the multitude, as formulated by Spinoza. Mark Fisher, in turn, from the Spinozian concept of entity, produces a speculative articulation between Gothic materialism and cyber-Spinozism that aims to create a collective body, immanent and antagonistic to the tyranny of financial capitalism. Furthermore, based on Spinoza’s theory of affects, he develops an ethical analysis of his time that also intends to be a convocation to political action. Finally, the paper aims to clarify what the two authors have in common, namely, their belief in the positivity of political action, and how this characteristic reaffirms the relevance of maintaining an ever attentive and vibrant dialogue with Spinoza’s philosophy.

Résumé :
Purpose: The objective of this study is to analyze the relationships between material, or frugal, consumption and the congruence between personal and spiritual life, mediated by the search for well-being, generating a segmentation proposal. Methodology/approach: Structural Equation Modeling and regression tests were used for mediation and moderation analysis, complemented by Latent Class Analysis for sample segmentation Originality/Relevance: The study pioneeringly investigates material, frugal, and wellness consumption relationships, as well as the indirect role of positive emotions with the congruence between personal and spiritual life, to propose a segmentation of consumers in a crisis situation. Key findings: The results indicated that well-being and positive emotions allow for moderate mediation, enabling consumers to reconcile both frugal and material goals with a balanced life, individually and spiritually. The proposed segmentation identified three distinct groups based on congruence between practical and spiritual life. Theoretical/methodological contributions: The study advances the understanding of heterogeneous consumer profiles in crisis situations, proposing to practitioners and policymakers to better know the profile of consumers in a health crisis. Methodologically the study combines structural equation modeling, mediation and moderation analysis, and latent class analysis to reach the study’s objective.
