Résumé :
Queen Helen Nemanjić (1250–Brnjaci near Zubin Potok, February 8, 1314) was a Serbian medieval queen and consort of King Stefan Uroš I (r. 1243–1276), the fifth ruler of the Serbian Nemanide dynasty. She was the mother of the kings Stefan Dragutin and Stefan Uroš II Milutin. Today, she is known as Helen of Anjou (Jelena Anžujska in Serbian) although her real name was most probably Heleni Angelina (Ελένη Aγγελίνα). She was the founder of the Serbian Orthodox monastery of Gradac as well as four Franciscan abbeys in Kotor, Bar, Ulcinj, and Shkodër. Together with her sons, Kings Stefan Dragutin and Stefan Uroš II Milutin she helped renovation of Benedictine abbey of Sts. Sergius and Bacchus near Shkodër on Boyana river in present-day Albania. After the death of her husband, she ruled Zeta and Travunija until 1306. She was known for her religious tolerance and charitable and educational endeavors. She was elevated to sainthood by the Serbian Orthodox Church. Along with Empress Helen, the wife of Serbian Emperor Stefan Uroš IV Dušan, Queen Helen was the most frequently painted woman of Serbian medieval art. Six of her portraits can be found in the monumental painting ensembles of the Serbian medieval monasteries of Sopoćani, Gradac, Arilje, Đurđevi Stupovi (Pillars of St. George), and Gračanica, as well as on two icons and one seal. Queen Helen is also the only female Serbian medieval ruler whose vita was included in the famous collection of the “Lives of Serbian Kings and Archbishops” by Archbishop Danilo II, a prominent church leader, warrior, and writer.

Résumé :
This article explores Washington's annotated copy of the Constitution and the Acts of Congress (hereafter called the Acts of Congress to remain consist with the label Washington had placed on the front cover) to reveal new insights into his constitutional interpretation. Held in a private collection until 2012, this article is the first to examine Washington's notations in the Acts of Congress for their value as statements about political authority. Washington's comments in the margins of his volume suggest an evolving view of presidential power and constitutional limitations on the executive branch as early as January 1790. His margin notes on the Acts of Congress served as blueprint for his defense of presidential authority and the expansion of the executive branch in the 1790s. Finally, the annotated Acts of Congress inserts Washington's ideas about the presidency into the debate surrounding originalism by revealing how his analysis of the language evolved to meet the demands of governing, leading him to reject the delegates' intent for Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution.

Résumé :
The study examines the nexus of the ruling party's slogans in the state of Oceania, "war is peace, ignorance is strength, freedom is slavery" in George Orwell's novel 1984 to the present societies in developing countries, using the lens of Marxism. Sufyan Al-Dmour states; Three different classes are present in the depicted novel: the ruling class, which is echoed by the Inner Party; Outer Party represents the middle class, the Proles consist of the working class (SufyanAl-Dmour, 2020). The class system is dominating all over the world, specifically in developing countries. MacCartney and Zaidi argue; It was the military-bureaucratic control of a few influential figures, with the three classes which kept what can be called Pakistan's political setup. (McCartney, Zaidi, 2019). Common people in 1984 were severely penalized for who exerted to think or act differently. The pertinence of the slogan "freedom is slavery" in 1984 is still dominant in developing societies.

On January 15, 1993, President George Bush transmitted to the Senate for advice and consent to ratification the Treaty Between the United States of America and the Russian Federation on Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (the START II Treaty), signed at Moscow on January 3, 1993. In his letter of transmittal, President Bush discussed the importance of the Treaty, in major part as follows:The START II Treaty is a milestone in the continuing effort by the United States and the Russian Federation to address the threat posed by strategic offensive nuclear weapons, especially multiple-warhead ICBMs [intercontinental ballistic missiles]. It builds upon and relies on the Treaty Between the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics on the Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (the START Treaty) signed at Moscow on July 31, 1991. At the same time, the START II Treaty goes even further than the START Treaty.

Résumé :
The present study documents the fragmented publication history of Malacostraca Podophthalmata Britanniæ by William Elford Leach, illustrated with coloured figures of all the species by James Sowerby. This work was originally proposed to consist of 12 or 14 numbers. One number was to be published every two months between the years 1815 and 1818. Although this was increased to 19 numbers its publication by James Sowerby halted at number 17 in 1820. In that year Leach had a complete nervous breakdown and, although he eventually recovered, he was retired from his post at the British Museum in 1822. Although Leach was optimistic and set out plans to complete Malacostraca, he died from cholera in 1836 near Genoa, Italy, with the work unfinished. During the early 1870s fortuitous events occurred that would lead to the publication of numbers 18 and 19 and the completion of the work. At that time William Sowerby began negotiating with Bernard Quaritch, a London publisher, for disposal of old stock from the Sowerby publishing house including Malacostraca. George Brettingham Sowerby the younger, an established naturalist and highly skilled illustrator, proposed that the Malacostraca should be updated and he prepared Nos. 18 and 19 for publication. These last two volumes of Malacostraca were finally made available by Quaritch in November 1875. The authorship of Nos. 1–17 has never been in doubt and this is the work of Leach with illustrations by James Sowerby. Among the taxa illustrated in Nos. 18 & 19 however, are species which were not known to occur in British waters when Leach was working and as such the choice of Malacostraca illustrated in 1875 differed significantly from the original proposals. Consequently the 1875 supplement should therefore correctly be credited entirely to G.B. Sowerby II and cited as Sowerby, G.B. II in Leach, W.E. (1875). Finally, because copies of the Malacostraca are not generally available, all the magnificent plates illustrated by James Sowerby and George Sowerby II are reproduced here in full colour.

Résumé :
Highlights. In recent decades, the number of patients with diffuse, multivessel coronary artery disease has increased due to widespread use of endovascular methods of treatment, long-term conservative management of patients, and the expansion of indications for surgical revascularization. In order to improve the results of treatment, in 2007 academician Yu. L. Shevchenko developed and began using the method of stimulation of extracardiac angiogenesis – «YurLeon». The present article demonstrates the long-term results of supplementing coronary bypass surgery with this method in patients with diffuse coronary artery disease.Aim. To evaluate long-term results of coronary bypass surgery supplemented by extracardiac myocardial revascularization.Methods. The prospective, randomized study included 205 patients with diffuse, multivessel coronary artery disease who were treated at the St. George Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Clinic, National Medical and Surgical Center named after N.I. Pirogov. The majority of patients were men – 75% (n = 153), whereas women accounted for 25% (n = 52), all patients were 60 to 78 years old (67.3±5.74 years). The group I consisted of patients with coronary bypass surgery supplemented with the «YurLeon» technique, the group II consisted of patients with coronary bypass grafting only. All patients provided consent to participate in the study. The clinical condition of patients, echocardiography, myocardial scintigraphy and coronary angiography data, quality of life indicators (the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey) were assessed.Results. In the long-term postoperative period (36 months), the group I, compared with the group II, presented with a statistically significant decrease in the functional class of angina pectoris (1[1–2] vs. 2[1–2], p = 0.02); fewer adverse events: myocardial infarction (4.5% vs. 11.6%, p = 0.011), recurrent angina pectoris (10% vs. 17.9%, p = 0.038); an increase in the left ventricular ejection fraction (59.0±5.15% vs. 53.2±6.13%, p = 0.001); a decrease in the Summed Rest Score (SRS) (4.5±3.5 vs. 8.4±5.7, p = 0.012) according to myocardial scintigraphy with technetril; a decrease in the Summed Thickening Score (STS) (6.1±3.3 vs. 10.7±2.9, p = 0.012); a decrease in the hibernating myocardium (3.5±2.2% vs. 7.4±5.1%, p = 0.03); additional extracardiac sources were found in the group I according to coronary graft angiography, there were no statistically significant differences between the groups by occluded autogenous venous bypass grafts (in the group I – 23 out of 46 venous conduits (49%), in the group II – 30 out of 49 venous conduits (51%), p = 0.089); The groups differed in terms of quality of life (the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey): physical functioning (87.3±10.32 vs. 75.3±14.15 points, p = 0.001); role-based functioning due to physical condition (90.1±10.50 vs. 79.7±7.01 points, p = 0.012); pain (93.10±6.37 vs. 80.5±5.21 points, p = 0.03); the total physical component of health (57.9±5.4 vs. 45.8±6.1 points, p = 0.012).Conclusion. We have accumulated 15 years of experience in conducting complex myocardial revascularization in patients with coronary artery disease and diffuse coronary atherosclerosis, which allowed us to prove the effectiveness and safety of the YurLeon technique.

Résumé :
Abstract The Eocene nephelinite from Księginki quarry (SW Poland) contains five types of clinopyroxene phenocrysts varying by texture and chemical composition. Type I phenocrysts are formed of Mg-rich (mg# = 0.93–0.88) homogenous cores, patchy mantle and zoned rims. Abundant type II is less magnesian (mg# = 0.65–0.88) and consists of spongy or spongy-patchy core surrounded by zoned rims, whilst in type III (mg# = 0.69–0.84), the cores are massive but patchy. The mg# of cores of type IV phenocrysts is slightly lower than that of type I (0.79–0.89), but its cores are either massive or patchy. Type V is very scarce and consist of relatively Mg-poor (mg# = 0.75–0.77) core enveloped by nonpatchy, sometimes zoned mantle and zoned outer rim. Chemical composition of type I and type IV cores suggests that they are xenocrysts introduced into the nephelinite from disintegrated peridotite and clinopyroxenitic xenoliths, respectively. Type V is also of xenocrystic nature, but its source rock was significantly more evolved than mantlederived ones. Types II and III are possibly cognates from the host nephelinite or a melt related to the nephelinite. All the types of phenocrysts suffered from disequilibrium with the nephelinitic (or proto-nephelinitic) melt or dissolution during adiabatic uplift. Linear variation in chemical composition of phenocrysts of Księginki nephelinite suggests its evolution because of fractional crystallisation, without significant influence of other differentiation processes.

Linnell, Anna-Marie. « Writing the Royal Consort in Stuart England ». Thesis, University of Exeter, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/23628.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This dissertation examines the literature of royal consorts in Stuart England. Critics and historians have devoted considerable attention to the creation of the monarch’s image during this tumultuous period, which witnessed two revolutions and the explosion of print. We know that the Stuart monarchs embraced different forms of visual media – including pageantry, portraiture and print – to disseminate their image within the court and to a broader public. However, the extensive literature about the royal consorts remains under-examined. My thesis makes an original contribution to scholarship by exploring what texts were written about the royal consorts, by whom, and how these writers constructed images of the royal consorts that participated in broader debates over the status of the monarchy. The dissertation is divided into two main parts. Part 1 comprises six chapters that analyse succession writing, when a new monarch came to the throne and established their iconography for the new reign. I draw on hundreds of texts that were printed about the Stuart consorts at these moments. These writings span a variety of genres, from poems and plays to sermons and political pamphlets. I investigate the literature of each succession in turn, analysing the main themes and motifs that emerged. This approach enables me to uncover a swathe of anonymous and under-utilised literature, but also re-interpret works by more canonical writers such as Aphra Behn. I ask how the royal consorts themselves, their spouses and members of the public could influence the creation of the royal consorts’ images at these moments. Critically, I also compare the conventions that were used to describe the consorts across the century. Part 2 analyses how writers re-constructed ideals for the royal consorts in Restoration England, as debates about the structure of the monarchy came to be more explicit. Chapter 7 concentrates on images of Henrietta Maria when she returned to England as Queen Mother. Chapter 8 asks how writers adapted former models of representation to praise Catherine, the infertile queen, when it became clear that she would not bear an heir. Finally, Chapter 9 examines the numerous secret histories and romances that were authored about Mary Beatrice’s purported behaviour during her exile in the 1690s. These chapters highlight the continued importance of these women and examines how writers constructed their legacies. As a whole, the literature about the royal consorts reveals a dynamic project as part of which authors engaged with and adapted earlier models of writing. This enabled them to address broader questions about changes in the nature of the Stuart monarchy and political life.

Jenkins, Deborah Gwendoline. « County administration in the reign of George II : the example of Surrey ». Thesis, University of Warwick, 1986. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/73384/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis investigates the restructuring of local government in the reign of George II in the county of Surrey. The decay of mediaeval and Tudor institutions such as manors and church courts, the redefinition of the role of the Assizes in local administration, the ending of the isolation of the boroughs, the marked professionalisation of County Quarter Sessions contributed to a very considerable change in the nature of local government in the period. The research opens with an introduction on the administrative relationship between central and county government, is then divided into three parts, each subdivided into chapters. Part one discusses forms of government at parish and borough level and charts the development of vestries and, against a background of municipal insecurity, assesses the reality of an urban renaissance in eighteenth century Surrey towns. Part two examines the important work of the court of Quarter Sessions and, in particular, the impact of administrative prescription on the individual Surrey inhabitant. Part three looks at the influence and social status of the county magistracy and their commitment and dedication to administrative work in the localities. The importance of administrative procedure as an agency of social control in the eighteenth century is emphasised in the conclusion, which also stresses the uses of administrative history to the social historian.

Résumé :
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that the main theme of Heptameron, by Marguerite de Navarre, is not love, as numerous critics maintain, but the notion of honour. This notion is the real unifying principle that indisputably confers its penetrating unity to the book.
If the kind of dialogue favoured by the Queen creates a polyphony which, at first, may seem destabilizing and hinder the coherence of the book, after reading it carefully, however, one notices that a certain number of guidelines relating to the notion of honour permeate the book. By identifying systems and ensembles, one discovers different sets of correlations--in connection with the notion of honour, that are connected by intelligible links and form homogeneous units that are completely meaningful. This reveals that, behind the obvious conservatism of the characters and members of the storyteller circle of Heptameron, the bivalence of the honour code, in the relationships between men and women, is challenged, even criticized.

The use of unilateral force under George W. Bush is not a new phenomenon in US foreign policy. As the author argues, it is merely a continuation of Bill Clinton’s foreign policy and is deeply rooted in both the foreign policy traditions of Jacksonianism and Wilsonianism. The analysis concludes that Clinton used unilateralist foreign policy with a 'smile' whereas the Bush administration uses it with an attitude.

For more than three centuries, violin pedagogical practices have been extensively developed towards music covering the common practice period. However, a problem arises when a violin student performing avant-garde music needs to find realistic solutions to problems that are not addressed in the standard repertoire. This critical essay offers a pedagogical approach to a work that fits well within this paradigm: Four Nocturnes (Night Music II), George Crumb’s only published work for violin and piano duo. The multi-dimensional aspect of this avant-garde work requires an equally multi-faceted approach to overcoming the inherent technical hurdles. Through practical illustrations and concise explanations, musical examples indicate how the score may be re-notated and simplified to create a preliminary step towards advancing to the original notation. Borrowing from the methodology of Otakar Ševčík and other leading twentieth-century violin pedagogues, the author shows how students can modify their approach to fit contextually in the realm of avant-garde music. Students who approach the work with this methodology will find it helpful in eliminating many of the potential pitfalls that they are likely to encounter.

This is an analysis of combat operations of US First Army under the command of Courtney Hodges, between August 1 and September 12, 1944, with an emphasis upon 1st, 4th, 9th, and 30th Divisions. However, other formations are necessarily discussed in order to maintain context. Indeed, many historians have failed to emphasize the complex interdependent nature of these efforts, and the traditional narrative has been distorted by inadequate situational awareness. This study argues that the army's operations were exceedingly difficult, resulting in approximately 40,000 casualties over a six week period. Although historians claim that the Germans were essentially defeated by the end of July, and that the Allied advance was subsequently halted by logistical difficulties, the official combat records clarify that logistical shortages were a tertiary factor, as the enemy remained capable of strong resistance. Consequently, defensive efforts were the primary factor hindering the advance, in conjunction with deteriorating weather conditions, rugged terrain, and surprisingly severe traffic congestion. Although this was mobile warfare, military theorists have overestimated the effectiveness of mechanization and underestimated the potential for antitank defenses. Ultimately, this study asserts that First Army was the primary American combat formation, and historians have exaggerated the importance of George Patton's Third Army. Therefore, in order to understand an American way of war, the combat operations of First Army deserve far more attention than they have previously received. This narrative thus emphasizes forgotten battles, including: Tessy, St. Sever, Tete, Perriers, Mayenne, Ranes, Flers, Mace, Elbeuf, Mantes, Corbeil, Sevran, Mons, Cambrai, Philippeville, Dinant, and Aubel.

Résumé :
The issue of George Bezvikonny’s scientific and literary heritage study and classification is considered in the article. The sphere of his interests included the history of Romania, Romanian-Russian relations, Bessarabian studies, genealogy, Pushkin studies, Armenology, Moldavian literary studies, iconography. The name of George Bezvikonny is associated with the underestimation of his legacy in modern Moldovan science. That is why it was important for us to compile a reviewed bibliography of his scientific works. The article surveys the most significant recent publications, written by our researchers. These works treat Bezvikonny’s literary work as an ethnographic asset that contains important ethnic values. The article outlines the problem of assessing and understanding George Bezvikonny’s creative heritage. The problem is caused by multidimensional approach to his personality and the lack of a single generalizing scientific work, which could be able to systematize the ethnic values of his works, having their historical and ethnocultural originality.

Résumé :
Symphony No. 2, a recent creation of composer Viorel Munteanu (first performance in 2021), is a fascinating, modern and provocative work. It is part of the “Shadows and Genesis” cycle, accumulating the effort of over thirty years of experience: “My shadows and genesis are quasi-permanent sources of inspiration; they are themes always born and reborn from my own evolution”1 . Symphony No. 2 stands out through the massiveness of its structure, the originality of the orchestration and its character deeply anchored in Romanian folklore motifs. The sources of inspiration, “shadows and genesis”, can be recognized, through references to previous creations and to Enescu’s music, as well through its use of the “George Enescu” melogram. The symphonic work is made up of five parts, entitled suggestively: - I. Imprints, II. Contrasts, III. Heterophonies, IV. Byzantine Sources, V. Dance of colors. This paper presents the compositional techniques, Viorel Munteanu’s fascination for the melograms - melodic “codes” transformed into the main thematic profile - and proposes an interpretation of the sound images generated by the expressive orchestration and thematic richness.

Résumé :
The paper analyses the global tendency of conceptualizing transnational and regional literature in order to suppress national literatures at first, and then to completely replace them. The analysis is based on History of the Literary Cultures of East-Central Europe: Junctures and disjunctures in the 19th and 20th centuries (Eds. M. Cornis-Pope and J. Neubauer, Vol. I 2004, Vol. II 2006, Vol. III 2007, Vol. IV 2010). The tendency to replace national literatures with the transnational one is depicted within the framework of broader cultural, social, and political circumstances. Based on the ideology of “Western liberalism, global capitalism, and George Soros” – which was stated as the core idea of the History of the Literary Cultures of East-Central Europe by its editors – this tendency leads to a general weakening of traditional identities framework: from personal to national identity. Therefore, the suppression of national literature is simultaneous with the suppression of nationality in general, and with changing the notion of literature as it existed in the age of national states since that notion was correspondent with the personal identity which also undergoes through changes.

Résumé :
Objective: To study the risk factors, management protocols and outcome of vulvar cancer cases over a period of 10 years in a tertiary care hospital. Methods: It is a retrospective cohort study of vulvar cancer from January 2004 to January 2014 at King George Medical University, Lucknow. Hospital records of 41 patients with histologically proven diagnosis of vulvar cancer were studied from Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Department of Radiotherapy. The presence of risk factors, stage of disease, treatment modalities used and disease outcome in terms survival were studied. The data collected was analyzed and compared with the published literature. Results: The mean age for diagnosis of vulvar cancer was 52 years and peak incidence was seen in age group of 50-70 years. Incidence was significantly more in multiparous (p = 0.001) and postmenopausal women (p = 0.007). An average of 4.1 cases were seen per year. 97.56% cases were squamous cell carcinomas including one case of verrucous carcinoma. Only one non-squamous case of Bowen’s disease was seen. 20 cases belonged to early stage (1 and 2) while 21cases had advanced disease (3 and 4). 48.78% cases were primarily treated with surgery, 26.83% with radiotherapy, 7.3% with chemotherapy and 17.07% with combined chemoradiation. 78% of surgically treated cases had mean survival of 5 years. Mean survival of 1 year was recorded in advanced disease cases. Limitation of the study was poor follow up after treatment. Conclusion: Incidence of vulvar cancer is significantly high in multiparous and postmenopausal women. Surgical treatment is the best option in early stage of disease (stage I and II) and gives high survival rates while advanced disease treated with chemoradiation has poor survival.

Meidan, Rina, et Joy Pate. Roles of Endothelin 1 and Tumor Necrosis Factor-A in Determining Responsiveness of the Bovine Corpus Luteum to Prostaglandin F2a. United States Department of Agriculture, janvier 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2004.7695854.bard.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The corpus luteum (CL) is a transient endocrine gland that has a vital role in the regulation of the estrous cycle, fertility and the maintenance of pregnancy. In the absence of appropriate support, such as occurs during maternal recognition of pregnancy, the CL will regress. Prostaglandin F2a (PGF) was first suggested as the physiological luteolysin in ruminants several decades ago. Yet, the cellular mechanisms by which PGF causes luteal regression remain poorly defined. In recent years it became evident that the process of luteal regression requires a close cooperation between steroidogenic, endothelial and immune cells, all resident cells of this gland. Changes in the population of these cells within the CL closely consort with the functional changes occurring during various stages of CL life span. The proposal aimed to gain a better understanding of the intra-ovarian regulation of luteolysis and focuses especially on the possible reasons causing the early CL (before day 5) to be refractory to the luteolytic actions of PGF. The specific aims of this proposal were to: determine if the refractoriness of the early CL to PGF is due to its inability to synthesize or respond to endothelin–1 (ET-1), determine the cellular localization of ET, PGF and tumor necrosis factor a (TNF a) receptors in early and mid luteal phases, determine the functional relationships among ET-1 and cytokines, and characterize the effects of PGF and ET-1 on prostaglandin production by luteal cell types. We found that in contrast to the mature CL, administration of PGF2a before day 5 of the bovine cycle failed to elevate ET-1, ETA receptors or to induce luteolysis. In fact, PGF₂ₐ prevented the upregulation of the ET-1 gene by ET-1 or TNFa in cultured luteal cells from day 4 CL. In addition, we reported that ECE-1 expression was elevated during the transitionof the CL from early to mid luteal phase and was accompanied by a significant rise in ET-1 peptide. This coincides with the time point at which the CL gains its responsiveness to PGF2a, suggesting that ability to synthesize ET-1 may be a prerequisite for luteolysis. We have shown that while ET-1 mRNA was exclusively localized to endothelial cells both in young and mature CL, ECE-1 was present in the endothelial cells and steroidogenic cells alike. We also found that the gene for TNF receptor I is only moderately affected by the cytokines tested, but that the gene for TNF receptor II is upregulated by ET-1 and PGF₂ₐ. However, these cytokines both increase expression of MCP-1, although TNFa is even more effective in this regard. In addition, we found that proteins involved in the transport and metabolism of PGF (PGT, PGDH, COX-2) change as the estrous cycle progresses, and could contribute to the refractoriness of young CL. The data obtained in this work illustrate ET-1 synthesis throughout the bovine cycle and provide a better understanding of the mechanisms regulating luteal regression and unravel reasons causing the CL to be refractory to PGF2a.
