Résumé :
Contract farming in seed production has played an instrumental role in bringing private investment into seed research and production. As developing countries have predominantly small and marginal farmers, the number of inefficiencies that arise from seed contractual agreements hinders producers from realizing the full potential benefits from seed contracts. We carried out an economic experiment with real producers and organizers currently engaged in seed production to analyze their preference for group seed contracts, its sustainability and welfare implications in the seed value chain. The producers are offered two types of group contracts: B and C. Contract B involves a company-organizer-seed producer group (SPG) whereas contract C removes the organizer and directly engages with the SPG (company → SPG). In the experiment, producers are asked to choose between an existing contract and either of the proposed group contracts. The experiment consists of two treatments: (i) concealed and revealed price information between agents, and (ii) presence and absence of a local organizer while making the decision. We find that the preference for group contract B is higher than for group contract C, suggesting the need for producers bargaining which can be achieved through group contract in the existing contract, Bargaining is high (6.3 percentage points) when price information is concealed. SPGs survive for about four out of five rounds and more than half of the groups (53%) formed in the first round survived throughout the five rounds, indicating a very high group sustainability.

Résumé :
The article discusses methods to protect the rights of the assignee from the dishonest behavior of the assignor, who, when concluding the contract, has concealed the right to claim the right to claim grounds for lowering the order of satisfaction of such a claim against the insolvent debtor. It is proved that the best means of protection at the stage of concluding a contract would be to use the institution of assurance of circumstances or to establish in the contract the right of the assignee to unilaterally terminate the contract in case of subordination of the claim. If the contract does not establish mechanisms for protecting the rights of the assignee, then the optimal solution for the assignee would be to challenge the contract as concluded under the influence of a material misconception.

Résumé :
In the difficult times of reconstruction of Polish statehood, having a life insurance policy that actually secured the existence of the family after the death of its breadwinner was a luxury that few citizens could afford. The burden of paying premiums was too heavy for the vast majority of society, hence the decision to take out the policy was sometimes made too late – at a time when the person concerned already knew about a deadly disease that was consuming his body. In order to obtain an insurance policy, he hid information about the disease, which in turn exposed the insurance companies to losses. They fought this practice by refusing payments to people who, by signing the contract, concealed information important from the insurer’s point of view.

Résumé :
This article discusses Nahda intellectual Buṭrus al-Bustānī’s public and pedagogic writings. It focuses on the nationalist pamphlets, the Nafīr Sūrriya, written in the wake of the first sectarian–civil war, and his translation of Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, both published in Beirut in 1860. I analyze Bustānī’s politico-theological and economic thought by looking at the nexus of debt, guilt, love, and mercy that he draws out in the Nafīr. The article argues that Bustānī’s nation is inaugurated into a “guilt-history” and eternally faced with the task of confronting the mercy of debt and the un-requitable debt of mercy. Nationality in this specific sociohistorical context became a form of artifice that in a postlapsarian age requires religion, labor, and exchange to survive as a social contract. The “civil war” exemplified a return to a state of nature that could only be amended by a return to the laws of nature and the seeking of refuge under the name of one God and one religion, diyāna. The social contract, articulated in these terms, could only be sealed through the recognition of natural laws as the foundation provided by God himself, while politics remained concealed under the folds of political theology.

<p>The role of marriage and family strengthening with regard to religious commandments and ethics is not concealed from people who follow the divine commands and basic teachings of the Holy books and prophets. However, nowadays in many western societies, the principles of natural marriage are violated. The new forms of marriage are called abnormal, unnatural, and unusual forms of marriage among individuals including the same or opposite sex. Unnatural marriage can’t be classified as a natural and legal contract. Note that both natural and unnatural forms of marriage have their own principles. Therefore, the recent research aims at analyzing the main reasons against unnatural marriage using analytical and library methods with regard to the fact that unnatural marriage has threatened standard marriage and family foundation. In this research, we rely on verses of Quran. All the data have been gathered by experts in the field of family affairs especially those who witnessed homosexual marriage and observed both personal and social difficulties of homosexual individuals. </p>

Résumé :
Urinary incontinence is an involuntary urination (leakage of urine). About 200 million people suffer from this condition, and 60% of cases are concealed and untreated because of shame. It is estimated that an increasing number of young women and women of menopausal age will suffer from urinary incontinence. This disease occurs during the perinatal, perimenopausal period, as a result of brain damage or an unhealthy lifestyle. There are four main types of urinary incontinence: stress, urge, overflow and mixed form. Treatment is adapted to the severity of disease, its type and includes physiotherapeutic treatment (kinesiotherapy, physiotherapy, massage), pharmacological, psychological and surgical treatment. In recent years, growing interest has been observed in the noninvasive biofeedback method. The patient learns to contract the weakened pelvic floor muscles, constantly monitoring progress in treatment. She is also motivated by visual and auditory stimuli. Growing evidence confirms the effectiveness of this method, which to a large extent eliminates urinary incontinence. Nevertheless, attention should also be paid to prevention, which reduces the risk of involuntary leakage of urine.

Résumé :
Expropriation of real property as a collateral for a loan agreement was in practice used to exploit the debtor's coercive position or to mislead the debtor. Certainly, the real goal of the debtor was not to divest themselves of their assets or their only house or flat, but merely to obtain a loan. However, the enormous costs of the loan, over and above the interest only, deceitfully concealed from the debtor at the time of entering into a loan agreement, made it simply impossible to repay the loan and resulted in the loss of the debtor's house or flat. This huge social problem would not have transpired if not for the jurisprudence of courts of law or decisions of notaries or court en-forcement officers who often accepted non-equivalence of considerations of both the parties to a contract. Therefore, in 2020, the lawmaker rightly introduced a law whereby a greater part of such agreements is invalid. Furthermore, the so-called Usurious Loans Act of 2022 will eliminate abuses in the loan market by introducing, inter alia, a precise limit on non-interest costs and supervision to be exercised by the Polish Financial Supervision Commission (KNF).

Résumé :
Since 2007 Labour Code contains the definition of dependent work, which can be carried out only in labour-law relations. The Amendment to Labour Code from 2012 makes the definition more precise, when it stipulates essential elements of dependent work and designates the others as conditions, under which dependent work should be carried out. The Amendment to Employment Act changes the definition of illegal work. Illegal work is a performance of dependent work by natural person except for labour-law relation, or if natural person – foreigner carries out work in conflict with issued permission to employment or without this permission. Since 2012 sanctions for illegal work were increased. Labour inspection is entitled to impose sanctions, in case of foreigners it is Customs Office. For control purposes employer is obliged to have copies of documents at the workplace proving the existence of labour-law relation. Goal of controls and high fines is to limit illegal employment of citizens of Czech Republic and foreigners as well. Illegal work has unfavourable economic impact on state budget. It comes to extensive tax evasions and also to evasions within health insurance and social security. If a concluded commercial-law relation meets the attributes of dependent work, then it stands for a concealed legal relationship. Tax Office can subsequently assess an income tax to businessman. Labour-law relationship enjoys a higher legal protection than commercial-law relationship; nonetheless it is not suitable to limit liberty of contract in cases when it is not unambiguously a dependent activity.

Résumé :
High-contrast markings, called distractive or dazzle markings, have been suggested to draw and hold the attention of a viewer, thus hindering detection or recognition of revealing prey characteristics, such as the body outline. We tested this hypothesis in a predation experiment with blue tits ( Cyanistes caeruleus ) and artificial prey. We also tested whether this idea can be extrapolated to the background appearance and whether high-contrast markings in the background would improve prey concealment. We compared search times for a high-contrast range prey (HC-P) and a low-contrast range prey (LC-P) in a high-contrast range background (HC-B) and a low-contrast range background (LC-B). The HC-P was more difficult to detect in both backgrounds, although it did not match the LC-B. Also, both prey types were more difficult to find in the HC-B than in the LC-B, in spite of the mismatch of the LC-P. In addition, the HC-P was more difficult to detect, in both backgrounds, when compared with a generalist prey, not mismatching either background. Thus, we conclude that distractive prey pattern markings and selection of microhabitats with distractive features may provide an effective way to improve camouflage. Importantly, high-contrast markings, both as part of the prey coloration and in the background, can indeed increase prey concealment.

<p class="p1">The detection of concealed targets beneath a person’s clothing from standoff distance is an important task for protection and the security of a person in a crowded place like shopping malls, airports and playground stadium, etc. The detection capability of the concealed weapon depends on a lot of factors likes, a collection of back scattered data, dielectric property and a thickness of covering cloths, the hidden object, standoff distance and the probability of false alarm owing to objectionable substances. Though active millimeter wave systems have used to detect weapons under cloths, but still more attention is required to detect the target likes a gun, knife, and matchbox. To observe such problems, active V-band (59 GHz- 61 GHz) MMW radar with the help of artificial neural network (ANN) has been demonstrated for non-metallic as well as metallic concealed target detection. To validate ANN, the signature of predefined targets is matched with the signature of validated data with the help of the correlation coefficient. The proposed technique has good capability to distinguish concealed targets under various cloths.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></p>

Résumé :
The present article consists of key extracts from the recently published Adrian Pabst’s book “Postliberal Politics. The Coming Era of Renewal” (2021). According to the author, stability in the West faces the challenges of left and right populism. And if left populism hasn’t survived the trial by real elections, the right populism is quite successful in removing liberal elites from power. At the same time the strong point of the right populism is the provision of a political program, but its weakness is in the absence of any concepts or political instruments for transitions implementation. But forces, - the ultraliberal left and anti-liberal right, - develop various types of identity politics thus undermining the cultural and civilizational fundamental aspects of the West and the feelings of common goal and common destiny. The author opposes those extremes with postliberalism – non-uniform ideological movement directed at overcoming the contradictions of the deadlocked liberal ideology that is characterized by the rise of both left and right populism. According to Adrian Pabst, postliberalism acknowledges the failure of liberal projects and at the same time the necessity to preserve the most valuable liberal aspects in new form. Liberalism with its multiple trends is not beyond hope and some institutions it created are worth preserving. Still liberal ideology lead to the situation when freedom once alienated from self-restraint and mutual obligations turned into unfreedom. Self-destruction of liberal values such as freedom, equality, tolerance and pluralism demonstrates abnormalities that at once distort liberal principles and show liberal ideology logic. Postliberalism is intended to cut short those defects. In particular, postliberal ideology proceeds from acknowledging that the society is based not on some non-personal social contract between individuals as claimed by the liberals from the times of Hobbes and Locke, but appeared as the result of mutual arrangement between generations. Civil liberty does not man freedom from obligations or freedom for the sake of egoistical interests, but liberty to take care of oneself and others. Personality development based on personal independence should be balanced by common well-being. Equality does not mean uniformity but respect for integral virtue. Individual rights should not be downgraded but should be specific and relative due to their connection with obligations towards other people. Postliberalism in this interpretation endeavors to preserve the best gains of liberal ideology while eliminating the threat of blunt authoritarianism that is always concealed in liberal logic.

Résumé :
The ECJ West Tankers judgment has been the subject to turbulent discussions. The decision follows the line of argumentation expressed in the previous “arbitration” ECJ decisions (namely in the Turner case) in terms of the exclusion of arbitration from the scope of the Brussels I Regulation and the consequences on the practice of arbitration in the UK of the doctrine of incompatibility of anti-suit injunctions. The author believes that it is ill-conceived and inappropriate to determine the scope of application of the Regulation based upon the subject matter of the dispute (as in the Marc Rich case or the Van Uden case). In West Tankers, it was held that the subject matter of the dispute was the compensation for the damage caused by unlawful acts, which fell within the scope of the Regulation, and that the existence and application of the arbitration clause was merely a procedural objection, to be addressed by the court when reviewing its own jurisdiction. The argument appears unconvincing. Even though one can agree with the application of the New York Convention and its interrelation with the Regulation, as presented e.g. by the Advocate General in the opinion on West Tankers, reference was not made to an ‘exemption’ from the scope of the Regulation for arbitration proceedings merely because of the New York Convention. In no way may Article 1(2)(d) of the Regulation be understood as an exemption. It is merely the negative part of the definition of the scope of the Regulation. Using the term exemption means that the Regulation has usurped the authority to interfere with practically all spheres of jurisdictional authority of the individual member states, leading to a denial of their sovereignty. Such an approach denies the very principle of arbitration, which is based on the freedom of contract and on the legis arbitri. The concept endorsed by the ECJ in West Tankers may indeed give a foretaste of the future of arbitration in the EU. The West Tankers judgment is relevant not only for the institution of anti-suit injunctions. Its significance is substantially broader and highly alarming, since it is nothing less but an implied (though in no way concealed) move to apply all Community principles to arbitration and to subject arbitration proceedings (more or less completely) to Community law.

Passive millimeter-wave (PMMW) imaging is an effective technique for concealed objects detection. A PMMW imaging system optimized for corresponding with indoor surroundings is developed and tested. The metal is deposited on the surface of carbon fiber by chemical plating process and the temperature contrast between the human body and concealed objects can be improved by adding the metal deposited carbon fiber to concealed objects. An image enhancement algorithm is proposed on the basis of the combination of wavelet transformation and top-hit transformation, and the experiment results demonstrate that the algorithm proposed is highly efficient for the indoor passive millimeter-wave images. Furthermore, Lucy-Richardson iterative, restricted least square algorithm and user-defined palliative module filtering are combined to process the detecting images, and then the edge detection can be effectively realized using Canny arithmetic operator.

Résumé :
Abstract We consider optimal contracts when a principal has two sources to detect bad projects. The first one is an information technology without agency costs (ITP), whereas the second one is the expertise of an agent subject to moral hazard, adverse selection and limited liability (ITA). First, we show that the principal does not necessarily benefit from access to additional information and thereby may prefer to ignore it. Second, we discuss different timings of information release, i.e., a disclosure contract offered to the agent after the principal announced the result of ITP, and a concealment contract where the agent exerts effort before ITP is checked. We find that concealment is superior whenever the quality of ITP is sufficiently low. Then, ITP is almost worthless under a disclosure contract, while it can still be exploited to reduce the agent’s information rent under concealment. If the quality of ITPimproves, disclosure can be superior as it allows to adjust the agent’s effort to the updated expected quality of the project. However, even for a highly informative ITP, concealment can be superior as it mitigates the adverse selection problem.

Résumé :
We propose a novel approach for steganography using a reversible texture synthesis. A texture synthesis process resamples a smaller texture image, which synthesizes a new texture image with a similar local appearance and an arbitrary size. We weave the texture synthesis process into steganography to conceal secret messages. In contrast to using an existing cover image to hide messages, our algorithm conceals the source texture image and embeds secret messages through the process of texture synthesis. This allows us to extract the secret messages and source texture from a stego synthetic texture. Our approach offers three distinct advantages. First, our scheme offers the embedding capacity that is proportional to the size of the stego texture image. Second, a steganalytic algorithm is not likely to defeat our Steganography approach. Third, the reversible capability inherited from our scheme provides functionality, which allows recovery of the source texture. Experimental results have verified that our proposed algorithm can provide various numbers of embedding capacities, produce a visually plausible texture images, and recover the source texture.

Résumé :
ABSTRACT The outer membrane of Treponema pallidum, the noncultivable agent of venereal syphilis, contains a paucity of protein(s) which has yet to be definitively identified. In contrast, the outer membranes of gram-negative bacteria contain abundant immunogenic membrane-spanning β-barrel proteins mainly involved in nutrient transport. The absence of orthologs of gram-negative porins and outer membrane nutrient-specific transporters in the T. pallidum genome predicts that nutrient transport across the outer membrane must differ fundamentally in T. pallidum and gram-negative bacteria. Here we describe a T. pallidum outer membrane protein (TP0453) that, in contrast to all integral outer membrane proteins of known structure, lacks extensive β-sheet structure and does not traverse the outer membrane to become surface exposed. TP0453 is a lipoprotein with an amphiphilic polypeptide containing multiple membrane-inserting, amphipathic α-helices. Insertion of the recombinant, nonlipidated protein into artificial membranes results in bilayer destabilization and enhanced permeability. Our findings lead us to hypothesize that TP0453 is a novel type of bacterial outer membrane protein which may render the T. pallidum outer membrane permeable to nutrients while remaining inaccessible to antibody.

We explore the capabilities of the radio-frequency atomic magnetometers in the non-destructive detection of concealed defects. We present results from the systematic magnetic inductive measurement of various defect types in an electrically conductive object at different rf field frequencies (0.4–12 kHz) that indicate the presence of an optimum operational frequency of the sensor. The optimum in the frequency dependence of the amplitude/phase contrast for defects under a 0.5–1.5 mm conductive barrier was observed within the 1–2 kHz frequency range. The experiments are performed in the self-compensated configuration that automatically removes the background signal created by the rf field producing object response.

Résumé :
Abstract Sampling methods for detecting stink bugs are intensive, time-consuming, and yield variable results. In a 2-yr mark-release-observe experiment, over 500 adult green stink bugs, Chinavia hilaris (Say) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), were used to test for variation in nocturnal and diurnal insect distribution patterns on cotton. Field-collected stink bugs were marked or unmarked with nontoxic fluorescent sharpie markers, released, and monitored in cotton fields at peak bloom. Stink bugs were monitored visually during day and night, aided by a handheld blacklight for nighttime observations. Within-cotton distribution insect observations were categorized by plant section (i.e., bottom, middle, and top branches), by fruiting positions and leaf surface, and by concealed or exposed orientation on floral bracts and leaf surfaces. Green stink bugs were primarily distributed on the middle and top branches irrespective of photoperiod, and on bolls in first position from the main stem. Differences in stink bugs observed concealed or exposed on fruiting structures were detected. During daytime, stink bugs were primarily observed inside the bract of bolls, and when detected on leaves concealed on the lower surface. In contrast, stink bugs were primarily outside the bract of bolls at night, and when detected on leaves were exposed on an upper surface. These results support focus on assessing internal boll injury for evaluating stink bug injury to avoid the challenges in stink bug detection observed here, and point to additional study to refine stink bug density estimation when needed.

This essay examines the stereotype that transgender people are “deceivers” and the stereotype's role in promoting and excusing transphobic violence. The stereotype derives from a contrast between gender presentation (appearance) and sexed body (concealed reality). Because gender presentation represents genital status, Bettcher argues, people who “misalign” the two are viewed as deceivers. The author shows how this system of gender presentation as genital representation is part of larger sexist and racist systems of violence and oppression.

Résumé :
In subjects with sinus rhythm, respiration has a profound effect on heart rate variability (HRV) at high frequencies (HF). Because this HF respiratory arrhythmia is lost in atrial fibrillation (AF), it has been assumed that respiration does not influence the ventricular response. However, previous investigations have not considered the possibility that respiration might influence HRV at lower frequencies. We hypothesized that Cheyne-Stokes respiration with central sleep apnea (CSR-CSA) would entrain HRV at very low frequency (VLF) in AF by modulating atrioventricular (AV) nodal refractory period and concealed conduction. Power spectral analysis of R-wave-to-R-wave (R-R) intervals and respiration during sleep were performed in 13 subjects with AF and CSR-CSA. As anticipated, no modulation of HRV was detected at HF during regular breathing. In contrast, VLF HRV was entrained by CSR-CSA [coherence between respiration and HRV of 0.69 (SD 0.22) at VLF during CSR-CSA vs. 0.20 (SD 0.19) at HF during regular breathing, P < 0.001]. Comparison of R-R intervals during CSR-CSA demonstrated a shorter AV node refractory period during hyperpnea than apnea [minimum R-R of 684 (SD 126) vs. 735 ms (SD 147), P < 0.001] and a lesser degree of concealed conduction [scatter of 178 (SD 56) vs. 246 ms (SD 72), P = 0.001]. We conclude that CSR-CSA entrains the ventricular response to AF, even in the absence of HF respiratory arrhythmia, by inducing rhythmic oscillations in AV node refractoriness and the degree of concealed conduction that may be a function of autonomic modulation of the AV node.

Résumé :
Introduction. Stomach perforations caused by ingested foreign bodies are extremely rare injuries in adults, accounting for less than 1% of all gastrointestinal perforations. The clinical picture is diverse and often presents a diagnostic problem. There are few publications reporting such cases in literature.Materials and methods. Using the example of a clinical case, this paper describes the clinical picture, diagnostic role of X-ray instruments and surgical tactics of diagnosing and treating a stomach perforation concealed by a foreign object, which occurred one week prior to admission. The patient V., 52 yo, was admitted to hospital on an emergency basis in the condition of moderate severity, complaining of abdominal pain for two days. The onset of the disease had no apparent reason. Similar pains had bothered the patient a week earlier the incident but were relieved without treatment. Results and discussion. On the basis of clinical and laboratory-instrumental data, acute pancreatitis was pre-diagnosed. Conservative drug therapy with positive dynamics was started. Two days later, computed tomography of the abdominal organs with intravenous bolus contrast was performed. According to the CT data, a foreign body in the abdominal cavity was identified, which rested on the liver at the level of the gallbladder, perforating the wall of the pyloric department of the stomach. Localized inflammatory effusion in the abdominal fat was observed. The patient was operated and discharged in satisfactory condition.Conclusion. Stomach perforations caused by small-sized foreign bodies are characterized by non-specific clinical manifestations. The use of radiation diagnostic methods facilitates the timely diagnosis and therapy choice in patients with stomach perforations caused by small-sized foreign bodies.

To highlight a very uncommon presentation of intestinal perforation in a child caused due to foreign body. 10-year-old kid presented to the emergency with chief complains of pain abdomen for 2 days. There was no evidence of any peritonitis. X-ray and Contrast enhanced computed tomography scan revealed no pathology other than gas under diaphragm. On exploration there was a concealed perforation caused due to chocolate stick ingested by the kid. There was no free fluid or contamination found in the peritoneal cavity. Foreign body ingestion by kids is very common. 80-90 % these objects pass with stool not causing any injury to the viscera. In 10 to 20 % cases they require endoscopic removal. 1 % of these cases can cause perforation and have to be removed surgically. Majority of the times these foreign bodies are not seen on X-rays or CT scans. There may be cases in which patients may not present with features of perforation peritonitis but still patients must be assessed properly to undertake intervention at appropriate time to reduce complication. In such children presenting to emergency with acute pain abdomen, a high degree of suspicion for foreign body ingestion should be kept in mind and evaluated accordingly. Résumé :
AbstractAdenosine, when given as an intravenous bolus, has been shown to produce atrioventricular nodal block in humans. To examine the effect of adenosine on conduction across both accessory pathways and the atrioventricular node in children, we reviewed our experience with adenosine administered during both atrial and ventricular pacing in 42 patients with atrioventricular resting tachycardia and in eight patients with atrioventricular nodal reentry tachycardia. Adenosine was administered as a mean bolus of 195 μg/kg/dose during both atrial and ventricular pacing, examining antegrade and retrograde conduction before and after radiofrequency ablation. In those patients with persistent or intermittent pre-excitation, anomalous ventricular activation was either unchanged (n=8) or increased (n=11). Retrograde conduction (either through the accessory pathway alone in three, or across both the accessory pathway and the atrioventricular node in 19) persisted in 92% of the 24 patients studied. Adenosine produced either first or third degree antegrade heart block in all patients studied without pre-excitation (those with either dual atrioventricular nodal pathways or concealed accessory pathways). Adenosine produced retrograde block in all of the eight patients with dual atrioventricular nodal pathways. In contrast, retrograde conduction persisted in 82% (14/17) of patients with concealed accessory pathways (p=0.001). When used to examine retrograde conduction, adenosine was a sensitive (82%) and highly specific (producing retrograde atrioventricular block in all patients with dual atrioventricular nodal pathways) predictor of tachycardia supported by a concealed accessory pathway. Adenosine yielded a sensitivity and specificity of 96% and a positive predictive value of 99.5% for the success of ablation of accessory pathways. These data indicate that the pattern of adenosine-induced changes in either antegrade or retrograde atrioventricular conduction, or conduction in both directions, in young patients with supraventricular tachycardia is related to the mechanism of the tachycardia. Adenosine, therefore, is a useful adjunct in the electrophysiologic evaluation of supraventricular tachycardia in children.

Résumé :
Inversion of residual gravity anomalies is an important geophysical technique for depicting subsurface density contrasts, for example, for mineral deposits. We have expressed subsurface density variations using depth-variable polynomial functions and developed the polynomial coefficient inversion (PCI) method, which is an alternative method for mapping subsurface density distributions by inverting the coefficients of density-contrast functions. PCI enables the linear inversion of density variations without vertically subdividing the subsurface. Synthetic tests indicate that PCI combines polynomial functions and multiple constraints to highlight the anomalous masses through an iterative process with appropriate weighting parameters. We apply our method to a local investigation of banded iron formation (BIF) deposits in the Hebei Province, North China. The inversion results depict the approximate distribution of the subsurface density contrasts to identify the stratigraphic boundaries of different lithologies and BIF-favorable zones, thus implying that local iron-rich ore bodies may be located at the syncline axis or dip along the faults. The successful application of PCI for the BIF deposits indicates that this method is a promising strategy for density mapping.

LH 110 is part of the ancient Near Eastern scholarly debate regarding the function and role of the nadiātu-priestess groups in Old Babylonian society. Seemingly, LH 110 forbids the uncloistered nadītu from opening up or entering a business place associated with the sābītu; the penalty for such a crime is public execution by burning. Mainstream scholars view the nadiātu through the lens of either (a) indulging in illicit behaviour or (b) that LH 110 reflects a prohibition for the nadītu to compromise her chastity. In contrast, Martha Roth (1999) opines that LH 110 is an economic regulation of the nadītu, prohibiting her from overshadowing the money-lending business of the sābītu. However, what poses a problem is the horrific penalty, which seems to suggest and be justification for a seemingly terrible crime committed in concealment. I propose that when this prohibition is transgressed, a horrific crime is committed – tax evasion – which is a furtive crime that endangers the continuous welfare of the king/state. LH 110 is a fiscal regulation protecting the state/king’s revenues. The intention is to prevent a specific group of the nadiātu – an uncloistered priestess – to enter or open an enterprise, which the OB state administration is unable to regulate. Consequently, the nadītu could effortlessly conceal her yielded profits and thus evade paying tax to the king/state.

Résumé :
Pancreatic cancer is a concealed and highly malignant tumor, and its early diagnosis plays an increasingly weighty role during the course of cancer treatment. In this study, we developed a polymeric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) nanoplatform for MRI contrast agents. To improve tumor-targeting delivery of MRI contrast agents, we employed a pancreatic cancer targeting CKAAKN peptide to prepare a peptide-functionalized amphiphilic hyaluronic acid–vitamin E succinate polymer (CKAAKN–HA–VES) for delivering ultra-small superparamagnetic iron oxide (USPIO), namely, CKAAKN–HA–VES@USPIO. With the modification of the CKAAKN peptide, CKAAKN–HA–VES@USPIO could specifically internalize into CKAAKN-positive BxPC-3 cells. The CKAAKN–HA–VES@USPIO nanoparticles presented a more specific accumulation into pancreatic cancer cells than normal pancreatic cells, and an obvious decrease in signal intensity was observed in CKAAKN-positive BxPC-3 cells, compared with CKAAKN-negative HPDE6-C7 cells and non-targeting HA–VES@USPIO nanoparticles. The results demonstrated that our polymeric MRI nanoplatform could selectively internalize into CKAAKN-positive pancreatic cancer cells by the specific binding of CKAAKN peptide with pancreatic cancer cell membrane receptors, which provided a novel polymeric MRI contrast agent with high specificity for pancreatic cancer diagnosis, and makes it a very promising candidate for magnetic resonance imaging contrast enhancement.

Résumé :
Only a few Herculaneum rolls exhibit writing on their reverse side. Since unrolled papyri are permanently glued to paperboard, so far, this fact was known to us only from 18th-century drawings. The application of shortwave-infrared (SWIR; 1000-2500 nm) hyperspectral imaging (HSI) to one of them (PHerc. 1691/1021) has revealed portions of Greek text hidden on the back more than 220 years after their first discovery, making it possible to recover this primary source for the ongoing new edition of this precious book. SWIR HSI has produced better contrast and legibility even on the extensive text preserved on the front compared to former imaging of Herculaneum papyri at 950 nm (improperly called multispectral imaging), with a substantial impact on the text reconstruction. These promising results confirm the importance of advanced techniques applied to ancient carbonized papyri and open the way to a better investigation of hundreds of other such papyri.

Résumé :
Arctic-breeding geese are at record high population levels and are causing significant changes to some of their breeding and staging habitats. These changes could influence sympatric wildlife, but the nature and strength of these effects are unknown. Here, we review the interactions between geese and sympatric species and propose future research that could help to fill important knowledge gaps. We suggest that geese may be indirectly affecting other species through changes to nesting habitat, prey availability, and predator–prey interactions. Many ground-nesting Arctic birds prefer vegetated wet tundra habitats that offer concealed nest sites; areas also heavily used by breeding and staging geese. Where goose foraging exceeds the capacity of the plants to regenerate, habitats have shorter graminoids and more exposed substrate, potentially reducing the availability of concealed nest sites for other birds. Studies have documented local reductions in the abundance of these concealed-nesting species, such as shorebirds. Despite the nutrient enrichment contributed by goose feces, habitats heavily altered by geese have also been shown to host a reduced diversity and abundance of some invertebrate groups. In contrast, generalist predators show positive functional and numerical responses to the presence of breeding geese. Therefore, the risk of predation for alternative or incidental prey (e.g., lemmings or small bird nests) is likely elevated within or near breeding colonies. Studies have demonstrated a reduced abundance of small mammals in areas heavily used by geese, but it is unknown whether this is related to shared predators or habitat alteration. Sympatric wildlife could be further affected through higher stress-levels, altered body condition, or other physiological effects, but there is currently no evidence to demonstrate such impacts. Few studies have explored the potential effects of geese at larger spatial scales, but we suggest that hyperabundant geese could result in regional declines in the abundance and diversity of shorebirds and passerines. We recommend coordinated studies across multiple regions to quantify nesting habitat, arthropod communities, and predator–prey interactions in response to nearby goose colonies. To align with current multispecies approaches to conservation, adequate knowledge of the potential effects of hyperabundant goose populations on other wildlife should be a priority.

Résumé :
<p>The Hamersley Province in the northwest of Western Australia contains extensive banded iron formations (BIFs) and large hematite-goethite deposits. Density information of rocks and ores in this region has been scarce. This study reports the results of a systematic density investigations based on more than eight hundred density datasets in the province. This study not only provides a better understanding of density distribution of the rocks and ores in the province, but also allows forward gravity modeling over the known iron-ore deposits to be conducted for exploring the usefulness and effectiveness of gravity surveys for detecting concealed iron-ore deposits in the region. This should have a significant impact on iron-ore mining in the province as the outcropped ores have been mined for over 40 years in the province and the future targets are likely the concealed deposits below the surface. The analysis shows a clear density contrast around 1.0 g/cm3 between the Brockman iron ores and the host BIFs, which should generate clear positive net gravity anomalies over buried large iron-ore deposits. However, porous goethite ores hosted in the Marra Mamba BIFs have an average density of about 2.8 g/cm3 due to porosity about 30–40% in the ores. A density contrast of −0.5 g/cm3 may exist between the goethite ores and BIFs, which would produce net negative gravity anomalies over the deposits. Since most goethite deposits are layered consistently with the host rocks and associated with broad folds, the net gravity anomaly of an orebody itself may generally have the similar shape to the corresponding BIF bedrock. This implies that gravity surveys may be able to detect paleochannels which host the goethite ores, rather than directly detecting the orebody.</p>

Résumé :
AbstractThis paper discusses the recruitment procedure and the gradual loss of autonomy of low-skilled migrant workers in international labour migration, by using the example of Vietnamese workers’ trajectories to Malaysia. It argues that debates on indentured labour and all other forms of bonded labour remain relevant today as new manifestations of the practice are now concealed behind extensive economic exchanges and inter-state economic cooperation. A detailed study of the process of Vietnamese labour migration shows how migratory trajectories that start from ‘voluntary’ indebtedness eventually lead to a status of subordinate and immobilised guest workers in Malaysia. The interrelations between debt and contracts play here a central role. Encouraged by the promising messages of local recruiters and the official support for migration, candidate workers readily consent to sign the triple contracts that will lead them to work in Malaysia. In the process, they gradually get entangled in a web of obligations towards their recruiter, their state (bank) and their employer, leading to severe restrictions in their autonomy over life and work in Malaysia.

Colonizations of islands are often associated with rapid morphological divergence. We present two previously unrecognized cases of dramatic morphological change and niche shifts in connection with colonization of tropical forest-covered islands. These evolutionary changes have concealed the fact that the passerine birds madanga, Madanga ruficollis , from Buru, Indonesia, and São Tomé shorttail, Amaurocichla bocagii , from São Tomé, Gulf of Guinea, are forest-adapted members of the family Motacillidae (pipits and wagtails). We show that Madanga has diverged mainly in plumage, which may be the result of selection for improved camouflage in its new arboreal niche, while selection pressures for other morphological changes have probably been weak owing to preadaptations for the novel niche. By contrast, we suggest that Amaurocichla 's niche change has led to divergence in both structure and plumage.

This article explores the relationship between education, training and the single market, focusing on the market for the production of policy evaluations in the areas of education and training, culture and youth of the European Commission. Two questions are addressed: the first question relates to the geographical distribution of the organisations that deliver policy evaluation services to the European Commission (‘Commission’) in those areas; and the second relates to the nature of the ideas for policy development put forward in the evaluations examined. Based on information gathered from 23 evaluations carried out between 2012 and 2016 (in particular, the circa 300 recommendations they included), the analysis reveals that although the Commission relied on competitive processes for the award of those evaluations, competition was somewhat restricted: there is a marked dominance of a limited number of countries as the powerhouses for the Commission’s education policy evaluation. In relation to the second question, and by contrast to other policy spaces, the analysis provided little evidence of unfettered penetration of private sector ‘ideological repertoires’, lexicons and sensitivities into the European policy evaluation space.

Hélène Cixous’s liminal text ‘The Laugh of the Medusa’ calls for a challenge of traditional representations of femininity and prompts women to inscribe their hitherto concealed femininity into the world. Depicting the love, relationship and loss experienced by two female characters, Julie Maroh’s 2010 Blue Is the Warmest Color provides a narrative sustained by a reclaimed matrixial gaze that challenges patriarchal definitions of women. Whereas the original comic book acts in concert with Cixous’s perspective and seeks to assert the infinite richness of women’s individual constitutions, the 2013 film adaptation by Abdellatif Kechiche presents a different economy. This article analyses how, in contrast to Maroh’s original, the filmic adaptation discounts the feminine stance, develops a heteronormalised take on the same story and could therefore be read as promoting heteronormative leitmotifs and fantasised clichés of lesbian subjectivity and sexuality.

It is potentially devastating event to occur in pregnancy and associated with significant maternal morbidity and mortality. Case study: A 28-year-old primigravida with pre-eclampsia at 30 weeks 5 days period of gestation, presented with altered sensorium and emergency caesarean revealed massive concealed placental abruption with intrauterine fetal death. She later presented with left sided hemiparesis. Non-contrast computed tomography confirmed intracerebral frontal hemorrhage. Other radiodiagnosis tests done ruled out rupture arterial aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations and cerebral venous sinus thrombosis. She underwent decompressive craniectomy andvacuation of blood clot for intracerebral hemorrhage. Her Modified Rankin score was 2 at the time of her discharge. Conclusion: The complication of intracerebral hemorrhage with preeclampsia is rare. An early diagnosis, timely referral and interventions are associated with decreased maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality.

Résumé :
Thomas Jay Oord has recently proposed that God’s relationship to the world and its human inhabitants is well described as one of uncontrolling love, and that God is constitutionally incapable of intervening unilaterally in human lives. Consequently, prayer for God so to act is misjudged and inappropriate. This article argues that this conclusion runs counter to the biblical record, which sees God’s relationship with the world as sustaining and upholding, but also allowing for specific willed actions. However, God has given the world functional autonomy, which would be abrogated by interventions too predictable or too attributable. It is proposed that intervention by God is real and not uncommon, but often of concealed and unprovable provenance. God’s self-limitation with regard to intervention is seen as consistent but chosen, in contrast to Oord’s proposal of an ‘essential’ kenosis.

Résumé :
Long-term memory is a crucial adaptation for long-lived species. However, there have been few tests of the long-term retention of learned behaviours in free living, wild animals. Here, we demonstrate that the North Island robin ( Petroica longipes ; hereafter toutouwai) can recall a learned foraging behaviour for close to 2 years, with no intervening reinforcement. Birds that had been trained to peck open lids to retrieve a concealed food reward spontaneously solved a lid opening task between 10 and 22 months since they had last encountered the lid opening apparatus. By contrast, naive individuals could not solve the task. This long-term retention of a learned skill with no reinforcement, spanning over a quarter of the median age for wild toutouwai in our population, suggests that this threatened species may be an ideal candidate for conservation management strategies aimed at teaching individuals about novel threats and resources.

Résumé :
AbstractThe communication revolution has made texts and languages available to people who, it is here suggested, might not have the cultural components needed to use them in the same way as native speakers. Introduced languages have in much of Africa eclipsed indigenous knowledge from opportunity for home grown development. Africans flocking to Western languages supported by numerous Western subsidies, leaves African ways of life concealed from the West. Western languages can be used to undermine the West. The inadequacy of English in Africa is illustrated by the contrast between the holistic and dualistic worldviews; English being dualistic is a poor means for expressing African holism. This makes the use of English in and for Africa inherently confusing. It is proposed that indigenous development be encouraged through challenging and encouraging African theology on its own terms, by encouraging some Western missionaries to use African languages and resources in their task.

Résumé :
Abstract This article explores the relation between biological life and political life, placing it in the context of the ancient Greek distinction between the life of the home (the oikos) and the realm of politics (the polis). In contrast with the oikos, the life of the polis was characterized by attempts to exclude from its sphere both the constraints of necessity that oblige human action to conform to the exigencies of survival as well as the violence that accompanies this pursuit. Although this exclusion has never been successful, the question of how to achieve it lies at the heart of the oldest philosophical reflections on politics and, in a more concealed fashion, remains central to our political concerns today. Invoking the work of Giorgio Agamben, this article explores the earliest discussions concerning the question “what is political life?” to show why so much depends upon how we answer this question.
