Résumé :
Advances in miniaturization and wireless communications are providing the computer industry with the impetus to design handheld, portable computer terminals. Until enough research and experience evolves from handheld terminals to build a literature on design factors and to develop design guidelines and standards that would provide starting points for product design, the human factors community must rely on its user-centered design approach of designing, prototyping, and testing to ensure a safe and usable form factor for such terminals. The methodology that was used in establishing the design criteria for such a terminal included literature research, focus groups with potential users, contextual field research, expert testimony, and primary laboratory research, including a grasp analysis and screen viewability, data entry, signature capture, and holsterability testing. The user-centered design process described here provided the information required to establish the basic design criteria that would assure user safety and task efficiency. It also revealed informational needs for the human factors community involved in the development of handheld computer terminals.

Résumé :
To extend the usefulness of rod bipolar cells for studies of chemical synaptic transmission, we have performed electrophysiological recordings from rod bipolar axon terminals in an in vitro slice preparation of the rat retina. Whole cell recordings from axon terminals and cell bodies were used to investigate the passive membrane properties of rod bipolar cells and analyzed with a two-compartment equivalent electrical circuit model developed by Mennerick et al. For both terminal- and soma-end recordings, capacitive current decays were well fitted by biexponential functions. Computer simulations of simplified models of rod bipolar cells demonstrated that estimates of the capacitance of the axon terminal compartment can depend critically on the recording location, with terminal-end recordings giving the best estimates. Computer simulations and whole cell recordings demonstrated that terminal-end recordings can yield more accurate estimates of the peak amplitude and kinetic properties of postsynaptic currents generated at the axon terminals due to increased electrotonic filtering of these currents when recorded at the soma. Finally, we present whole cell and outside-out patch recordings from axon terminals with responses evoked by GABA and glycine, spontaneous inhibitory postsynaptic currents, voltage-gated Ca2+ currents, and depolarization-evoked reciprocal synaptic responses, verifying that the recorded axon terminals are involved in normal pre- and postsynaptic relationships. These results demonstrate that axon terminals of rod bipolar cells are directly accessible to whole cell and outside-out patch recordings, extending the usefulness of this preparation for detailed studies of pre- and postsynaptic mechanisms of synaptic transmission in the CNS.

Résumé :
One of the important tasks of such theories as theories of pattern recognition and the theory of information security, is the task of identifying terminals of information and telecommunication networks. The relevance of the topic is due to the need to study methods for identifying computer network terminals and build information security systems based on the knowledge gained. The main parameters that allow uniquely identifying subscriber terminals in the network are address-switching information, as well as a number of parameters characterizing the software and hardware of the computer system. Based on the obtained parameters, digital fingerprints of subscriber terminals are generated. The using anonymous networks by users of subscriber terminals and blocking of the methods of generating and collecting digital fingerprint parameters, does not allow to achieve the required degree of identification reliability in some cases. Based on the peculiarities of digital image formation in modern computer systems, many transformation parameters make impact on the output graphic primitive, thereby forming a digital fingerprint of the subscriber terminal, which depends on the placement of samples in a pixel, the algorithms used to calculate the degree of pixels influence, and also the procedures used of smoothing images in the graphics subsystem. In this paper an original model of image formation by means of a subscriber terminal web browser that allows to increase the degree of reliability of identification under conditions of anonymization of users of information and telecommunication networks is propesed. Features of the digital images formation in the graphic subsystems of modern computer systems are substantiated. These features allow identification under a priori uncertainty regarding the modes and parameters of information transfer.

Résumé :
In studying the circuitry of a given region of the brain, some knowledge of the density of synaptic terminals is useful. Such data is especially valuable when studying the brain under pathological or experimental conditions. The methods outlined in this paper have been used to detect axosomatic synaptic terminal loss in the aging rat brain, but they would be applicable to other experimental paradigms. The methods in the present paper have been described elsewhere, and were recently used in our study of the lateral superior olivary nucleus (LSO), a well-characterized cell group in the rat superior olivary complex, and a key component of the rat lower auditory pathway. Virtually all synaptic terminals ending on the cell bodies of LSO principal cells originate in the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MTB), which undergoes a significant loss of neurons with age in rats. Thus, we wanted to determine whether loss of MTB cells resulted in a significant loss of axosomatic terminals in the LSO.

Résumé :
There are many network topology designs that have emerged to fulfill the growing need for networks to provide a robust platform for a wide range of applications like running businesses and managing emergencies. Amongst the most famous network topology designs are star network, mesh network, hexagonal network, honeycomb network, etc. In a star network, a central computer is linked with various terminals and other computers over point-to-point lines. The other computers and terminals are directly connected to the central computer but not to one another. As such, any failure in the central computer will result in a failure of the entire network and computers in star network will not be able to communicate. The star topology design can be represented by a graph where vertices represent the computer nodes and edges represent the links between the computer nodes. In this paper, we study the vertex-edge-based topological descriptor for a newly designed hexagon star network.

Résumé :
In this study, in combination with mobile communication technology, sensor technology and computer technology, a tracking and monitoring system solution for preventing children and the elderly from getting lost is proposed. With the purpose of realizing monitoring and exerting no effect on the normal activities of the monitored objects, a mobile wireless terminal is applied in this system. Through using embedded microcontroller controller as control core, data acquisition, storage, and distance detection are realized. Through using embedded GPS positioning technology and GSM technology, the instant positions of the monitored children and the elderly are detected. When the monitored objects need to move in a fixed place (kindergarten or nursing home), portable terminals can communicate with computer control terminals and will automatically send a signal for providing warnings and informing computers and guardians when the monitored objects exceed the warning scope, so that it becomes easier for guardians to take corresponding measures in time. Besides, the system can effectively prevent children and the elderly from getting lost, or the emergence of other dangers.

Résumé :
The study investigated grade 6 students' comprehension of narrative text when presented on a computer and as printed words on paper. A set of comprehension tests were developed for three stories of varying length (382 words, 1047 words and 1933 words) using a skills hierarchy protocol. The text for each story was prepared for presentation on a Macintosh computer using a program written for the study and as print in the form of exact copies of the computer screen. Students from two grade 6 classes in a suburban elementary school were randomly assigned to read one of the stories in either print form or on the computer and subsequently completed a comprehension test as well as a questionnaire concerning attitude and personal information. The responses from the comprehension tests were evaluated by graduate students in Language Education. The data evolved from the tests and questionnaires were analysed to determine measures of test construct validity, inter-rater reliability, and any significant difference in the means of comprehension scores for the two experimental groups for each story. The results indicated small but insignificant differences between the means of the three comprehension test scores for computer and print. A number of students reading from the computer complained of eye fatigue. The scores of subjects reading the longest story and complaining of eye fatigue were significantly lower.

Résumé :
Road-rail transfer facilities ( or terminals, as they are referred to), represent a significant component of intermodal transportation. The term "intermodal" refers to the combination of two or more different modes used in transportation process of freight, in case of this study taking place between the road and the rail. The complexity of intermodal transportation has created a considerable demand for extensive application of computer modelling of its operations. Intermodal infrastructure represents a multimillion dollar capital investment, the utilisation of which has to be closely monitored. In recent years some innovative technologies have found their way into intermodal and some of them have been implemented with a various degree of success. One of those successful innovations is a system commonly known as RoadRailer. Its main features are bimodal trailers with the capability of being hauled on road as well as on rail. The research presented here includes the development of simulation models which are used to evaluate the operating performance of road-rail intermodal terminals. Two main types of terminals are modelled, namely: conventional container transfer facilities and RoadRailer trailer port facilities. The results of changing key operating resources and the incidence of trailer breakdowns have been tested using the simulation models developed as part of this thesis. Operations of other types of terminals and/or their combinations (for example sea-rail) are not the subject of this work. 960 detailed observations of important operations activities were made by the author during the research. The data collected were analysed to find the appropriate type of statistical data distribution. The Chi-Square test was performed to determine the best-fit line, with the conclusion, that the Erlang distribution was chosen correctly (Chapter 4.4 and Appendix F). The RoadRailer model described in Chapter 6 was developed as a mean of assessment of the new extended Adelaide RoadRailer terminal operation expected to commence from 1 March 1994. Data representing real-life operating performance were to be collected in due course, evaluated and used for the calibration of that model. However, due to changed ownership of RoadRailer trailers and interstate operating rights (which resulted in cessation of the interstate operation), the forecast scope of operation has not been realised. Thus the necessary data have not become available for the planned model calibration. An alternative approach had to be adopted, resolving the absence of data. A comparison of results achieved under the past limited scale of operations, with that given by the model, was performed. The RoadRailer terminal operation can take place under different set of conditions which influence the final result. The impact of specific conditions is investigated in depth in the model described in Chapter 6. The results thus obtained provide to the best knowledge of the author the first successful attempt in Australia to use computer simulation in modelling RoadRailer terminal operation. Dynamic simulation was found to be a very efficient tool for investigation/modelling of intermodal operations, both conventional and RoadRailer. As such it can be recommended for practical application whenever a number of factors with variable parameters of performance have to be considered The investigation of a Conventional terminal operation has proved the container manipulations (it means loading, unloading, transferring and storage manipulations from road to rail and vice versa) to be more efficient/productive than RoadRailer manipulations performed under a comparable set of operating conditions. However, it is recommended that a decision about the right choice between these two technologies be made according to marketing objectives and results of a detailed comparison of infrastructure capital costs. The close investigation of RoadRailer terminal operations has revealed a considerable impact of the number of resources deployed and the trailer breakdown ratio upon the performance reliability. If a performance commensurate with the best world standards is targeted, while sustaining a high breakdown ratio, then a relatively high level of resources have to be used. Reliability of trailers has been proved as a very important issue. The technical complexity of trailer design raises the possibility of trailer breakdowns unless an efficient preventive maintenance system is put in place. With the breakdown ratio grater than 5% it is highly recommendable that a dedicated repair crew be used. If the ratio exceeds 10% then successful performance is not achievable without such a crew, especially in the long run. These results have nevertheless to be considered as valid for the particular operating environment and as such do not claim general validity. After setting out the results obtained using the terminal models, several topics closely associated with the operating performance of road-rail terminals are discussed in Appendices. These are based on the experience of the author and Australian National. In Appendix G the key performance factors for a terminal are discussed, and associated performance indicators are put forward. In Appendix H the types of lifting equipment commonly used in terminals are described together with their main advantages and drawbacks. The strong relationship between the linehaul and terminal components of the overall road-rail intermodal task is highlighted with respect to customer service variables in Appendix I.

Résumé :
Public transport is important to society as it provides spatial accessibility and reduces congestion and pollution in comparison to other motorized modes. To assure a high-quality service, all parts of the system need to be well-functioning and properly planned. One important aspect for the system's bus terminals is their capacity. This needs to be high enough to avoid congestion and queues and the delays these may lead to. During planning processes, various suggested designs and solutions for a terminal need to be evaluated. Estimating capacity and how well the suggestions will function is a challenging problem, however. It requires analysis of complex interactions and behaviour of the vehicles. This sort of analyses can preferably be carried out using microsimulation. Furthermore, a discrete event simulation approach can make use of the fact that the path of a vehicle through a terminal can readily be described by a sequence of events (such as arriving, starting to drive to a stop etc.). The overall aim of this thesis is to investigate how discrete event simulation can be used to evaluate bus terminal design and traffic control policies. The main contribution is the development of a method for bus terminal simulation. As a first step, a discrete event simulation model of a combined bus and tram stop is formulated. The model is tested on a real system where the current design is compared to an alternative one. The test shows that a model developed with a discrete event approach can be used to evaluate the situation at a stop and compare design alternatives. In the next step, a general discrete event simulation model of bus terminals is formulated. A modular approach is introduced, where a terminal can be constructed from a set of module building blocks. Another important contribution of the model is its spatial resolution that allows for queues and blockages to occur throughout the terminal. By applying the simulation model in a case study, it is shown that the model can be used to evaluate and compare various scenarios related to the layout, number of passengers and the outside traffic situation. Lastly, the bus terminal simulation model is used in a second case study in order to compare model output with empirical data. This study identified a number of factors that may have had an influence on differences between observations and simulation results and that is of interest to look further into. This includes the actual adherence to terminal rules and the effects of model parameters.

This thesis presents ZigZag, an 802.11 receiver that combats hidden terminals. ZigZag exploits 802.11 retransmissions which, in the case of hidden terminals, cause successive collisions. Due to asynchrony, these collisions have different interference-free stretches at their start, which ZigZag uses to bootstrap its decoding. ZigZag makes no changes to the 802.11 MAC and introduces no overhead when there are no collisions. But, when senders collide, ZigZag attains the same throughput as if the colliding packets were a priori scheduled in separate time slots. We build a prototype of ZigZag in GNU Radio. In a testbed of 14 USRP nodes, ZigZag reduces the average packet loss rate at hidden terminals from 82.3% to about 0.7%.

Résumé :
This study focuses on developing a new approach to seated work positions. It was conducted on 67 office workers who use the Video Display Terminal (VDT) as a major function of their working day. Muscle tension was measured by surface electromyography when subjects were asked to adopt four selected working postures. Pain was measured before and after ergonomic intervention on the Nordic scale, which was modified for this study. Performance was measured on timed typing tests. A psychosocial questionnaire was used to determine influences of job demands, and a diagnostic assessment was performed to determine symptoms and pre-existing musculoskeletal conditions. Furniture was used to place subjects in desired positions during the clinical testing sessions and the extended intervention period. The chair seat pan was adjusted to a forward tilt to promote a lordotic curve of the low back, resulting in an erect upper body and upright head position. The desk and keyboard were adjusted to the proper height for each worker. A neutral wrist position was obtained by lowering and tilting the keyboard away from the user. Results revealed muscle tension scores in the upper trapezius and forearm extensors were significantly reduced when the workers were placed with the head in a midline position, with forward-tilting seating and with use of a negative sloping keyboard tray. Subjects reported low pain scores at pretest so no changes were noted after intervention. Loss of control over job elements, lack of job satisfaction, and fear of job loss were related to an increase in muscle tension. Only fear of job loss correlated to increased pain levels. There was no relationship between any of the job demand factors and performance.

VSAT stations (Very Small Aperture Terminals) are small, cheap terrestrial satellite stations, which are equipped with small antennas (typically from 1 m to 2 m), low power RF transmitters (typically from 0.5 W to 2 W) and in modems and signal converters, forming a compact structure. Stations can be very easily installed on the roof, wall or car park in front of the user's office, where the end devices are placed. Stations can be used in a very convenient and economical way to connect end users devices to the main computer located in a remote data center. VSAT stations are usually used to transmit digital data.VSAT stations often work in a star network. VSAT stations communicate with a large ground station, called the central station. In this case, the type of modulation, transmission rate, coding and access methods for the outgoing channel (from the central station to the VSAT station) and for the incoming channel (from the VSAT station to the central station) are usually differentiated, in order to use the satellite channel effectively, using methods multiplied access. In this type of VSAT networks, user data is usually processed by VSAT stations and the central station, so as to effectively support various computer network protocols. The article concerns problems related to electromagnetic compatibility of military satellite terminal with small VSAT antennas (Very Small Aperture Terminals). The article focuses on the measurement of the frequency range of military satellite terminal work in the basic band for VSAT satellite terminals intended for data transmission. The article presents a laboratory stand and a method for measuring the operating frequency in the basic band for VSAT satellite terminals, which was developed on the basis of European civil standards and a military standard containing requirements on the operating frequency in the basic band for VSAT. In the case of measuring the operating frequency in the basic band for satellite terminals of the tested device, we must remember to estimate the uncertainty of the measurement. The extended value of the uncertainty of measurement for individual frequency ranges is determined from the f0± 2*10^-7 relationship.

Résumé :
The original objectives of the approved proposal included: (a) The determination of species- and tissue-specificity of the PBAN-R; (b) the elucidation of the role of juvenile hormone in gene regulation of the PBAN-R; (c) the identificationof the ligand binding domains in the PBAN-R and (d) the development of efficient screening assays in order to screen potential antagonists that will block the PBAN-R. Background to the topic: Moths constitute one of the major groups of pest insects in agriculture and their reproductive behavior is dependent on chemical communication. Sex-pheromone blends are utilised by a variety of moth species to attract conspecific mates. In most of the moth species sex-pheromone biosynthesis is under circadian control by the neurohormone, PBAN (pheromone-biosynthesis-activating neuropeptide). In order to devise ideal strategies for mating disruption/prevention, we proposed to study the interactions between PBAN and its membrane-bound receptor in order to devise potential antagonists. Major conclusions: Within the framework of the planned objectives we have confirmed the similarities between the two Helicoverpa species: armigera and zea. Receptor sequences of the two Helicoverpa spp. are 98% identical with most changes taking place in the C-terminal. Our findings indicate that PBAN or PBAN-like receptors are also present in the neural tissues and may represent a neurotransmitter-like function for PBAN-like peptides. Surprisingly the gene encoding the PBAN-receptor was also present in the male homologous tissue, but it is absent at the protein level. The presence of the receptor (at the gene- and protein-levels), and the subsequent pheromonotropic activity are age-dependent and up-regulated by Juvenile Hormone in pharate females but down-regulated by Juvenile Hormone in adult females. Lower levels of pheromonotropic activity were observed when challenged with pyrokinin-like peptides than with HezPBAN as ligand. A model of the 3D structure of the receptor was created using the X-ray structure of rhodopsin as a template after sequence alignment of the HezPBAN-R with several other GPCRs and computer simulated docking with the model predicted putative binding sites. Using in silico mutagenesis the predicted docking model was validated with experimental data obtained from expressed chimera receptors in Sf9 cells created by exchanging between the three extracellular loops of the HezPBAN-R and the Drosophila Pyrokinin-R (CG9918). The chimera receptors also indicated that the 3ʳᵈ extracellular loop is important for recognition of PBAN or Diapause hormone ligands. Implications: The project has successfully completed all the objectives and we are now in a position to be able to design and screen potential antagonists for pheromone production. The successful docking simulation-experiments encourage the use of in silico experiments for initial (high-throughput) screening of potential antagonists. However, the differential responses between the expressed receptor (Sf9 cells) and the endogenous receptor (pheromone glands) emphasize the importance of assaying lead compounds using several alternative bioassays (at the cellular, tissue and organism levels). The surprising discovery of the presence of the gene encoding the PBAN-R in the male homologous tissue, but its absence at the protein level, launches opportunities for studying molecular regulation pathways and the evolution of these GPCRs. Overall this research will advance research towards the goal of finding antagonists for this important class of receptors that might encompass a variety of essential insect functions.
