Résumé :
The extensive use of computers by businesses makes it imperative for most business graduates to possess a fair amount of computer skills to effectively perform in today's work environment. Business schools are integrating computers into their curricula to provide their students with these skills. While many studies in education have evaluated the effect of computer-based education, there are very few in the field of business education. This study evaluates the influence of a computer-based support system on the decision-making skills of students in a introductory financial management course. It also evaluates the impact of various personal characteristics of the student on decision-making performance. An experimental design combined with a survey instrument is used to collect data from forty-two graduate students. Discriminant analysis is used to derive a profile of students classifiable into groups based on quality of performance and degree of satisfaction. The results of the study indicate that the computer support system does indeed improve the performance of the students. The results of discriminant analyses suggest aptitude to be an important variable that emerged consistently in all the discriminant models. The other important predictors of improved performance and satisfaction with computer-supported instruction were observed to be domain expertise, domain experience, system experience, and the gender of the students.

Résumé :
This paper presents a summary of the fire resistance computer program FRCP developed to analyze the influence of selected parameters on the response and behaviour of axially loaded square reinforced concrete columns subjected to fire. The mechanical and thermal properties of the concrete used in the reinforced concrete column and the variation of the elastic moduli of the concrete and the reinforcing steel with temperature need to be determined experimentally, prior to analysis using the FRCP computer program. Very good agreement (±15%) was obtained between the computed and the experimental responses of prototype and model columns. Key words: axial load resistance, computer program, concrete cover thickness, deterioration of strength and stiffness, direct models, fire endurance, reinforced concrete columns, temperature–time relationships.

Résumé :
The geometry of overlapping tubular joints, the equations of intersection curves and the coordinate of the intersection point are introduced first. The variational method for simple tubular joints is extended to the stress analysis of tubular K-joints with overlap. The computer program is compiled. The stress concentration factor and the position of the hot spot of an overlapping joint are found. For the sake of proving the feasibility of our analysis and program, the computed results are compared with experimental data of our photoelastic experiment and other experiments.

Résumé :
The purpose of this study is to develop a complex test and analysis technique to improve the reliability of seismic performance evaluation of buildings, and to establish a seismic performance evaluation system using shear damper as an earthquake preparation technology. In this study, validated examples of viscoelasticity provided by OpenSees were selected for verification of hybrid experimental results data and compared with hybrid experimental techniques. By applying the analysis program and the developed Labplugin, the hybrid experimental system built through the connection between the equipment was verified. As a result, the behavior of the cyclic loading test showed the general behavior of the damper, but in the hybrid test, the behavior of the damper with respect to the ground acceleration and the decrease in stiffness caused by fracture were found. From the above comparison experiment, it can be seen that the hybrid technique developed in this study shows excellent seismic behavior compared to the cyclic loading experiment, dynamic experiment, and analytical technique. With the system built in this study, it is judged that it is possible to design a structure damper in the future. In addition hybrid experimental system will help to conduct more economical and reliable research on seismic control by applying partial experimental data to structures with nonlinear behavior in the future.

Résumé :
Causal modeling and the accompanying learning algorithms provide useful extensions for in-depth statistical investigation and automation of performance modeling. We enlarged the scope of existing causal structure learning algorithms by using the form-free information-theoretic concept of mutual information and by introducing the complexity criterion for selecting direct relations among equivalent relations. The underlying probability distribution of experimental data is estimated by kernel density estimation. We then reported on the benefits of a dependency analysis and the decompositional capacities of causal models. Useful qualitative models, providing insight into the role of every performance factor, were inferred from experimental data. This paper reports on the results for a LU decomposition algorithm and on the study of the parameter sensitivity of the Kakadu implementation of the JPEG-2000 standard. Next, the analysis was used to search for generic performance characteristics of the applications.

Résumé :
A broadly applicable approach for numerical analysis of the kinematic working capability of mechanisms is presented. Composite workspaces are introduced to represent position and orientation capabilities of mechanisms, both individually and together. Numerical methods for solving systems of kinematic constraint equations, using a moving-frame algorithm and equations that characterize the workspace boundary are developed. Two analytic methodologies, comparison and incorporation methods, are presented to determine whether the workspace of a mechanism satisfies design requirements. An experimental computer program for workspace analysis that incorporates a numerical solver and computer graphics for visualization on a high speed graphics workstation is outlined. The feasible positioning space of a Stewart platform that is subject to orientation constraints is computed, to illustrate the use of this approach.

Résumé :
Sisvar is a statistical analysis system, first released in 1996 although its development began in 1994. The first version was done in the programming language Pascal and compiled with Borland Turbo Pascal 3. Sisvar was developed to achieve some specific goals. The first objective was to obtain software that could be used directly on the statistical experimental course of the Department of Exact Science at the Federal University of Lavras. The second objective was to initiate the development of a genuinely Brazilian free software program that met the demands and peculiarities of research conducted in the country. The third goal was to present statistical analysis software for the Brazilian scientific community that would allow research results to be analyzed efficiently and reliably. All of the initial goals were achieved. Sisvar gained acceptance by the scientific community because it provides reliable, accurate, precise, simple and robust results, and allows users a greater degree of interactivity.

Résumé :
Hand gesture provides an attractive alternative to cumbersome interface devices for human computer interface. Many hand gesture recognition methods using visual analysis have been proposed. In our research, we exploit multiple cues including divergence features, vorticity features and hand motion direction vector. Divergence and vorticity are derived from the optical flow for hand gesture recognition in videos. Then these features are computed by principal component analysis method. The hand tracking algorithm finds the hand centroids for every frame, computes hand motion direction vector. At last, we introduced dynamic time warping method to verify the robustness of our features. Those experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach yields a satisfactory recognition rate.

The aim. To study the features of the breathing process based on the breathing curve analysis in patients with various forms of bronchial asthma using computer visualization methods.Material and Methods. The experimental data comprised breathing curves registered with the MONITOR device in patients with various bronchial asthma types and a group of apparently healthy people. The original algorithm of spectral-time analysis was used to identify the characteristic features of the breathing curves in each group at the stage of digital processing.Results. Breathing curves were analyzed and typical images were obtained for the group of apparently healthy individuals and four groups of patients with various types of bronchial asthma (following the classification of E.V. Nemerov). Conclusion. A spectral-time analysis allowed us to obtain characteristic “single” graphical images of the breath curve in patients with various forms of bronchial asthma. The resulting images can be used as an additional diagnostic criterion. The algorithm proposed by the authors can also be used in the analysis of any other biosignals.

Résumé :
The polarization switching kinetics of nanosized ferroelectric crystals and the transition between homogeneous and domain switching in nanoscale ferroelectric films are considered. Homogeneous switching according to the Ginzburg-Landau-Devonshire (LGD) theory is possible only in two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectrics. The main condition for the applicability of the LGD theory in such systems is its homogeneity along the polarization switching direction. A review is given of the experimental results for two-dimensional (2D) films of a ferroelectric polymer, nanosized barium titanate nanofilms, and hafnium oxide-based films. For ultrathin 2D ferroelectric polymer films, the results are confirmed by first-principle calculations. Fitting of the transition region from homogeneous to domain switching by sigmoidal Boltzmann functions was carried out. Boltzmann function fitting data enabled us to correctly estimate the region sizes of the homogeneous switching in which the LGD theory is valid. These sizes contain several lattice constants or monolayers of a nanosized ferroelectrics.

Résumé :
The paper presents experimental and computer researches of ferroconcrete beams at high-temperature influences. There were conducted the experimental fire tests of ferroconcrete beams. The most promising way of verifying these experimental research data is computer simulation of structures, also during a fire. In order to evaluate the quality of the experiment and the reliability of the received temperature distribution, there was conducted a computer simulation of the ferroconcrete beam in the ANSYS R.17.1 software complex. There were conducted a comparative analysis of the results of experimental studies and numerical analysis. The results confirm that the method of conducted experimental research and computer simulation with further numerical analysis can be recommended for practical application.

Résumé :
Abstract Stealth is a frequent requirement in military applications and involves the use of devices whose signals are difficult to intercept or identify by the enemy. The silent sonar concept was studied and developed at the Department of Marine Electronic Systems of the Gdansk University of Technology. The work included a detailed theoretical analysis, computer simulations and some experimental research. The results of the theoretical analysis and computer simulation suggested that target detection and positioning accuracy deteriorate as the speed of the target increases, a consequence of the Doppler effect. As a result, more research and measurements had to be conducted to verify the initial findings. To ensure that the results can be compared with those from the experimental silent sonar model, the target's actual position and speed had to be precisely controlled. The article presents the measurement results of a silent sonar model looking at its detection, range resolution and problems of incorrect positioning of moving targets as a consequence of the Doppler effect. The results were compared with those from the theoretical studies and computer simulations.

Résumé :
Flat-plate reinforced concrete structures tend to behave nonlinearly, even at service load levels, when subjected to lateral loading. This is due mainly to the deformations that occur at the column-to-plate boundaries. Currently available structural analysis computer programs assume linearly elastic behaviour and thus underestimate lateral displacements. This paper describes an efficient, easy-to-use structural analysis procedure and computer program for predicting the nonlinear response of flat-plate structures subjected to lateral loading. The structure is assumed to be a three-dimensional frame comprised of linearly elastic columns, flat-plate floor panels and shear walls, and nonlinear "connections" between the columns and the flat-plate floors. Utilizing all available experimental data, standardized functions have been derived to predict the nonlinear moment–rotation behaviour of these plate-to-column connections. The functions have been incorporated into the structural analysis computer program. Examples are presented to illustrate the capabilities of the program, to compare results computed by it with published results, and to illustrate the effects of several geometric and material parameters on the behaviour of the structure. Key words: reinforced concrete, flat plate, structural analysis, nonlinear analysis, lateral load analysis.

Résumé :
With the advent of artificial intelligence, computer-aided instruction has developed into intelligent computer-aided instruction. Computer-aided instruction not only overcomes many weaknesses of traditional physical education teaching but also significantly increases the teaching effect and efficiency. This article first studies and analyzes the characteristics of computer-aided instruction systems. Then, we use statistical methods and logical analysis to randomly select two classes of undergraduate students as the experimental and control group, respectively. In the control group, the traditional teaching model was adopted, while the experimental group adopted the computer-aided teaching mode. The experimental group showed significant improvement in physical education as compared to the control group. The results of this study validated that the use of computer-assisted instruction is beneficial in the implementation of physical education programs, mostly in teaching concepts and principles of academic nature.
