Résumé :
The conventional engineering design process consisting of three phases, synthesis, analysis and evaluation can be extended for solving rehabilitation problems by including a diagnosis phase during which abnormalities and malfunctions are identified and characterized. After diagnosis, the design objectives are clearly specified and the conventional engineering design process can begin. Different problem solving strategies, information representation, and processing are useful for the different phases of rehabilitation design. This paper describes the RETAIN knowledge-based rehabilitation design system which integrates a relational database, production rules and algorithmic functions. RETAIN diagnoses retaining wall failures and synthesizes preliminary rehabilitation designs and cost estimates. Its framework and methodology may be applied to other infrastructure components such as pavements, water and sewage networks, bridge piers and marine structures. RETAIN decomposes rehabilitation problems into influencing failure modes then identifies a set of rehabilitation strategies such that each strategy remedies one or more failure modes. Complete rehabilitation solutions are formed by searching and combining strategy components. Conceptual knowledge for design synthesis is organized in relational database tables. The paper includes an example of design synthesis with relational operations for selecting rehabilitation strategies and forming complete rehabilitation solutions.

Résumé :
Computer-aided conceptual design of mechatronic products is becoming more and more important since it offers much convenience in design scheme retrieval and enhances the utilization of existing designs. One of the key technologies for computer-aided conceptual design is an efficient search algorithm for retrieving existing designs. As such, it’s necessary to find a feasible way to select the most suitable design out of a number of candidates for further development. By applying behavioral modeling method for representation of conceptual design, this paper proposes a node matching algorithm for searching behavioral model, together with a model similarity evaluation method. Based on these methods, a framework for computer-aided conceptual design is subsequently proposed. Finally, a case study is presented to illustrate the applicability of the proposed methodologies.

Résumé :
The creative phases of design are based upon the human ability to conceptualise or abstract ideas from physical observations of the real world. That ability comes from experience, based on experiment: discerning patterns of behaviour in particular sets of observations. In this work it is shown that the process of identification, experiment and abstraction may be modelled accurately on a computer by definitive, or agent-oriented, programming, so forming a powerful aid to conceptual design. A new computer modelling language, called EdenLisp, has been developed by the author around Definitive Notations and interfaced to a commercial Computer Aided Design package. It provides a tool whereby computer models of systems can be originated that have state and on which state change can be made, not only by the designer but also by other autonomous agents of change Experiments with the language are described that show that scripts of definitions can have characteristics that permit the design to proceed as if there were an engineering prototype of the physical system being designed. The explicit representation of state at the lowest levels permits experimentation, observation of properties and addition of further observations. The interactive construction of EdenLisp is analogous to the conceptual design process It is used to illustrate and test design meta-theories for modelling conceptual design. It is shown to have potential for concurrent or multi-agent design, and is also an excellent vehicle for design education.

Résumé :

This thesis presents the work done to implement new computational tools and methods dedicated to aircraft conceptual design sizing and optimization. These tools have been exercised on different aircraft concepts in order to validate them and assess their relevance and applicability to practical cases.First, a geometry construction protocol has been developed. It is indeed essential to have a geometry description that supports the derivation of all discretizations and idealizations used by the different analysis modules (aerodynamics, weights and balance, stability and control, etc.) for which an aircraft concept is evaluated. The geometry should also be intuitive to the user, general enough to describe a wide array of morphologies and suitable for optimization. All these conditions are fulfilled by an appropriate parameterization of the geometry. In addition, a tool named CADac (Computer Aided Design aircraft) has been created in order to produce automatically a closed and consistent CAD solid model of the designs under study. The produced CAD model is easily meshable and therefore high-fidelity Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) computations can be performed effortlessly without need for tedious and time-consuming post-CAD geometry repair.Second, an unsteady vortex-lattice method based on TORNADO has been implemented in order to enlarge to scope of flight conditions that can be analyzed. It has been validated satisfactorily for the sudden acceleration of a flat plate as well as for the static and dynamic derivatives of the Saab 105/SK 60.Finally, a methodology has been developed to compute quickly in a semi-empirical way the buffet envelope of new aircraft geometries at the conceptual stage. The parameters that demonstrate functional sensitivity to buffet onset have been identified and their relative effect quantified. The method uses a combination of simple sweep theory and fractional change theory as well as the buffet onset of a seed aircraft or a provided generic buffet onset to estimate the buffet envelope of any target geometry. The method proves to be flexible and robust enough to predict within mainly 5% (and in any case 9%) the buffet onset for a wide variety of aircrafts, from regional turboprop to long-haul wide body or high-speed business jets. This work was done within the 6th European framework project SimSAC (Simulating Stability And Control) whose task is to create a multidisciplinary simulation environment named CEASIOM (Computerized Environment for Aircraft Synthesis and Integrated Optimization Methods), oriented toward stability and control and specially suited for aircraft conceptual design sizing and optimization.

Résumé :
In today's highly competitive shipbuilding market the emphasis is on the production of acceptable design proposals within a very short timescale. A computer-aided conceptual ship design system, which utifises the latest developments in workstation technology, has been developed. It is intended to help reduce the technical and commercial risks associated with the process of tendering for newbuilding contracts. The system as a whole, uses fundamental modeffing techniques to enable areas such as dimensions generation, huilform development, layout design, powering estimation, mass estimation, motions prediction, work content estimation and cost estimation to be considered at a much greater level of detail at the concept design stage than was previously possible. This thesis describes the specification and development of those parts of the overall design system concerned with the generation of vessel dimensions and huliform and layout design. In order to improve the flexibility of the system, a so-called expert system approach has been adopted to provide the mechanism for the control of the design methodology. For this purpose, a unique expert system shell named INCODES (INtelligent COncept DEsign System) was specified and developed. The development of this shell is described in some detail. The application of the INCODES shell to the control of the logic involved in the development of design proposals for containerships is discussed, and the knowledge base developed for the generation of these design proposals is described. The knowledge base is shown to incorporate fundamental procedures for the generation of vessel dimensions and for huliform and layout design, as well as a comprehensive suite of analysis routines to assist in the verification of the design proposals. The knowledge base is also considered to be unique in its treatment of the investigation of the loading arrangements of containership design proposals. The flexibility of the procedures developed is demonstrated by their application to the generation and examination of containership design proposals which possess a range of physical and operational characteristics.

Résumé :
The engineering design process may be seen as a series of interrelated operations that are driven by decisions: each operation is carried out as the consequence of an associated decision. Hence, an effective design process relies heavily upon effective decision-making. As a consequence, supporting decision-making may be a significant means for achieving design process improvements. This thesis concentrates on how to support selection-type decision-making in conceptual engineering design.

Résumé :
Abstract This paper describes the computer aided design system Modessa. Modessa is developed to support multi-disciplinary design teams in the conceptual design phase. Modessa is based on the “morphological design method” which decomposes the design problem into a number of so called functions. Then several alternatives are identified for each of these functions. These alternatives are visualized using pictures and arranged by function in a matrix which results in a so called “morphological overview”. Finally the alternatives are evaluated based on the customer requirements. The best alternatives for each function are combined to form the optimum solution for the design problem. Modessa supports multi-disciplinary design teams during the conceptual design process by: - Suggesting known design alternatives for design functions, thus leaving more time for the creation of novel design alternatives. - Offering a “common language” to objectively evaluate the design alternatives. - Simplifying the creation and reuse of the conceptual design documentation. Modessa is general purpose in nature and can be used for a wide variety of design applications. The kernel of Modessa is a design knowledge database that increases continuously as design teams add new functions (problems) and appropriate alternatives (solutions). In this paper the use of Modessa is illustrated by an industrial design example.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Entity Relationship (ER) diagrams are among the most popular formalisms for the support of database design [7, 12, 17, 6]. Their classical use in the (usually computer aided) database design process can roughly be described as follows: after evaluating the requirements of the application, the database designer constructs an ER schema, which represents the conceptual model of the new database. CASE tools can be used to automatically transform the ER schema into a relational database schema, which is then manually fine-tuned. During the last years, the initially rather simple ER formalisms has been extended by various means of expressivity to account for new, more complex application areas such as schema integration for data warehouses [12, 3, 13]. Designing a conceptual model with such enriched ER diagrams is a nontrivial task: there exist complex interactions between the various means of expressivity, which quite often result in unnoticed inconsistencies in the ER schemas and in implicit ramifications of the modeling that have not been intended by the designer. To address this problem, Description Logics (DLs) have been proposed and succesfully used as a tool for reasoning about ER diagrams and thereby detecting the aforementioned anomalies [5, 6, 8].
