Résumé :
Agricultural competitiveness is a prerequisite to benefit from free trade. Increasing the competitiveness of agriculture can not be separated by the existence of small-scale farming because Indonesia's agricultural sector is dominated by cultivation activities conducted in small-scale units, inefficient, low productivity, low value added and low trading performance strategy is needed in improving the competitiveness of small scale farm-based. This review is a qualitative description presenting a review literature on the concept of competitiveness and the dynamics of agriculture based on small-scale farming and how to build competitivenessof small-scale farmer

In 2009 from the comprehensive competitiveness comparison of nearly 300 cities on district level shown in "Chinese Urban Competitiveness Report", 12 competitivenesses of more than 50 major cities are evaluated by using econometric models, and Chinese most competitive top 10 cities of Year 2009 emerge. Since the city's comprehensive competitiveness ranges many indexes which are difficult to quantify and various best programs with fuzziness, the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) is relatively more scientific and objective. This paper presents Mathematica program which use fuzzy analytic hierarchy process to evaluate the the city's comprehensive competitiveness, and the practicability of FAHP presented in this paper may provide the reference to the researchers in the field.

Résumé :
Numerous interpretations of the competitiveness of regional agri-food system in the scientific literature are predominantly fragmentary depending in specific goals of research. This creates problems for universalizing approaches, identifying areas of their complementarity, and integrating new definitions. To systematize existing interpretations of the competitiveness of regional agri-food systems and identify new areas of research, we carried out a structured review of the scientific publication from peer-reviewed academic journals indexed in international and Russian databases. We applied the method of content analysis to identify the definitions of the “competitiveness”, “sustainable competitiveness”, “regional agri-food systems”. Moreover, we calculated the average percentage of journal articles mentioning these categories per year. Cluster analysis of journal articles allowed identifying general concepts of the competitiveness of regional agri-food. As a result we systematized the definitions of the concept of «competitiveness of regional agri-food systems» depending on research area, actors and the level of sustainability of competitiveness. The systematization and classificatio n o f researc h investigatin g th e competitivenes s o f regiona l agri-food systems enabled determining new areas of future research. Firstly, a more detailed analysis of the factors of the sustainable competitiveness of regional agri-food systems, particularly in pandemic and post-pandemic periods is of critical importance. Secondly, searching for a comprehensive toolkit for ensuring sustainable competitiveness of regional agri-food systems, as well as cooperation and competition among the agri-food companies in the Internet can be a focus for future research.

Résumé :
There is a growing debate on the theoretical basis, how it could be conceptualised, as well as the utility and meaning of regional competitiveness. This is associated with various attempts to measure regional competitiveness with the help of composite indices for coming-up with league tables. However the measurement of regional performance has run ahead of the academic debate, such indices receive a lot of media attention, and in some cases are even used by policy-makers to support their arguments. It is therefore instructive to look at such indices in more detail to evaluate their utility from a practical standpoint. This is done by working out the theoretical framework for six indices, deconstructing these and analysing the single indicators. Methodologically, issues such as normalization, standardization and the aggregation into a single number are also included. In addition to this, since many authors claim that their indices can function as a proxy for future growth, a statistical analysis of the predictive quality with respect to economic performance has also been carried out. This thesis, therefore, for the first time, sheds light on the utility of regional competitiveness indices and contributes to the discussion of the meaning of benchmarking regional performance based on the regional competitiveness hegemony that can be observed. The findings suggest that indices of regional competitiveness can be of only limited help for policy-decisions besides although they are a source for a wealth of information on certain regional indicators. This is primarily because of the lack of a theoretical basis for measuring regional competitiveness, and secondly because of the poor performance in functioning as a proxy for future economic performance.

Résumé :
As competition becomes intense, firms seek strategies to keep afloat. Among others, they carefully choose their activity location, recruit a talented workforce, and engage in innovation. In this thesis, we shed light on these three features empirically, mainly using econometric techniques. Our contribution is in the literature of firms’ competitiveness, industrial organization and economic geography. At first, we study regional productivity disparities and their interplay with local agglomeration advantages. To do so, we apply a density-based machine learning clustering algorithm to identify firms’ clusters at a fine-grained geographic scale on a sample of Italian firms. Then, we observe simultaneously the extent to which clusters explain agglomeration economies and firm selection effects. Our findings suggest that dense clusters generate agglomeration externalities that are heterogeneous across regions. In the second part of the thesis, we investigate the impact of foreign managers on firms’ competitiveness on a sample of firms operating in the United Kingdom. We show that domestic firms become more efficient after recruiting foreigners to their management team due to previous industry-specific experience. In the last part, we assess the impact of patents on market share and labour productivity in the global Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector. Using a recent difference-in-difference approach, we find that patenting increase market share without significantly affecting labour productivity. Our evidence indicates some concerns regarding the implications of property rights from innovation on market competition.

Résumé :
National economic competitiveness is a major concern to governments, firms, and individuals in an increasingly globalised world. Culture is known affect economic competitiveness, but there is little existing research that links Hofstede’s cultural dimensions with the Human Capital Indicators in the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Index. U-blox is an international firm with offices around the world. The firm has grown through acquisitions and has become a key player in the wireless communication and positioning semiconductors business. The chosen topic will study the cultural aspects of a selected group of u-blox subsidiaries. The values in a workplace are in fact influenced by culture and by their human capital. Using Hofstede’s dimensions to analyse the cultural factors, it is possible to study the international context of the human capital in each subsidiary by using reliable international indicators provided in the Global Competitiveness Index.

Résumé :
This thesis explores the changing nature of accountancy in Birmingham and the increasing price-sensitivity of the industry, which is producing interesting tensions inside firms and between the workplace and home lives. This is part of ongoing commoditization, which has been frequently cited in the literature, but overlooked empirically. This research presents an integrated analysis of commoditization based upon 60 semi-structured interviews, investigating its drivers as well as the responses to the phenomenon. A conceptualisation of the current phase of commoditization is presented and the adaptations in firm level routines are explored. It then analyses the impacts of commoditization and changing firm practices on the lives of individuals at work, and the resultant effect on home lives. This thesis uncovers an increasing hybridisation of the worlds of work and home and highlights the contested nature of the boundary between the two spaces, which is placing constraints on career lifestyles. This work contributes a holistic and empirical understanding of commoditization to the literature, changing the way that knowledge services are conceptualised. It also uncovers new dimensions of organisational routines; hidden and visible routines, and identifies the individual as a powerful actor in the performance of firm routines, contributing to the literature on evolutionary theory.

Tax competitiveness is proven to be of growing importance due to the globalization and digitalization era, which increases the capital mobility of businesses. Hence, countries increasingly need to remain tax competitive. The latter raises the question whether this has a positive influence on the economic performance of a country. This dissertation aims to shed light on the impact of the Dutch corporate taxation system on its economic performance over the period 1995 until 2018. An OLS regression was performed to answer the main research question; "Do Dutch corporate taxes impact the economic performance of the Netherlands?" The effect of various explanatory variables such as statutory, effective, and implicit corporate tax rates, onthe dependent variables GDP growth, net FDI, and GCF were examined. The empirical results of the study present the negative and significant relationship between effective corporate tax rates and GDP growth as well as the positive and significant relationship between corporate tax revenues and GDP growth. Moreover, statutory corporate tax rates demonstrate a negative and significant impact on net FDI. The 2007 tax reform, used as a control variable, has a positive and significant impact on net FDI. The dependent variable GCF does not disclose any relevant significance with the explanatory variables. To scrutinize the results, it can be concluded that to a certain degree Dutch corporate taxes do influence the economic performance of the Netherlands.

Résumé :
Clusters are regional agglomerations of enterprises (industry), universities and research organisations (RDI), regional/local public authorities and other catalyst institutions gathered around common objectives and goals. Cluster models are strictly linked to measuring their competitiveness based on innovation and internationalisation, as they are regional development instruments in the first place. Several platforms are currently in use at international level measuring cluster competitiveness, created and focused on the very objective they have been defined for. The Cluster Modelling Platform proposes an integrated approach harmonising theoretic considerations and practical aspects of utility aiming at becoming an useful tool for the generation of competitive clusters based on innovation and internationalisation (1); an instrument to measure cluster competitiveness and a consultancy tool (2); a way to evaluate performance of the cluster management team (3); a flexible method allowing assessments both at cluster level and at the level of each member. The evaluation methodology considers both quantitative and qualitative aspects, taking into considerations various indicators such as turnover, exports, employment, innovation (quantitative) and geographical concentration, labour force, strategy, internationalisation and cooperation (qualitative).Qualitative aspects play a validation role, after answers given by peers are being digitalised. In the end, an analogical cluster function is being calculated. As data flow in, the function autocorrects itself in order to give accurate results. Results are being interpreted and recommendations are being provided. The tool is embedded in a user-friendly web-platform. The end beneficiaries are mainly clusters and their members but policy makers can also make a good use of it.

Résumé :
This report marks the start of a new stage in analysing the competitiveness of the Basque Country. In Chapter 1, we analyse the history of competitiveness in our territory, focusing on the characteristics over the past decade of a strategy begun more than 40 years ago. We also identify the challenges continuing that strategy currently presents. With the aim of guiding the next stage of the strategy, based on these challenges, in Chapter 2 we propose a new framework to drive territorial competitiveness. This is the result of a process of reflection, consultation and experimentation at the local and international level. In Chapter 3, we present a preliminary assessment of competitiveness and wellbeing in the Basque Country based on the core of the new framework. In Chapter 4, we conduct an exploratory analysis of some dimensions of the levers of competitiveness for wellbeing identified in the framework. Lastly, in the final chapter, we present the main conclusions of the assessment and reflect on the steps needed for this new framework to evolve as a beacon to guide the continuous improvement of competitiveness for the wellbeing of the Basque Country.

It then identifies the six main levers that can be used to influence the results of competitiveness and well-being, and thus bring about the structural changes necessary in the medium to long term to achieve a society with a small environmental footprint. The report concludes with a series of conclusions and recommendations to support decision making.

Résumé :
International organizations most often recommend a virtual one stop shop such as the Single Window for Foreign Trade (Spanish acronym: VUCE). This model is undoubtedly the most successful scheme available. This paper presents the general framework for trade facilitation and shows how VUCEs have triggered a new perspective of cohesiveness as countries seek to facilitate trade and influence competitiveness indexes. In addition, it assesses the current situation in countries of the Americas that are starting to or have already taken the first steps in developing a VUCE, such as Costa Rica, Colombia, Mexico, and Chile, and discusses the conditions required to implement a VUCE with the understanding that there is more than one possible model of implementation and every government must choose one that is suitable to its own institutional structure and technological progress. This paper was presented at the Fifth Americas Competiveness Forum for the Inter-American Development Bank and Compete Caribbean Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, October 5-7, 2011.
