Résumé :
We examined the avifauna of Saurashtra University Campus (SUC), Rajkot, Gujarat from July to December 2017. The study area was divided into four sections: North (N), East (E), South (S) and West (W) and surveyed over 18 visits (four line transects/visit). We recorded a total of 82 bird species from 67 genera, 40 families and 16 orders. Of these 57 species were terrestrial and 25 aquatic. By population size the most abundant birds were members of Columbidae (28%), Sturnidae (13%), and Charadridae (8%). Seventy per cent of birds observed (n=7665) were classed as very common and 2% (n=261) as very rare. Species density (S/N = 3.39) and population density (n/N = 196) were at their maximum in December. Ecological indices on temporal base reveal high species richness and Simpson diversity (1/D =17.0 and 1-D= 0.942) in August and November and Shannon diversity was high (H’=3.275) in November during study period.

Résumé :
Faced with a growing demand for adequate policies and programs that meaningfully address sexual violence on campus, the provinces of British Columbia, Ontario and Manitoba have introduced legislation requiring all post-secondary institutions to institute a sexual assault policy. The remaining provinces and territories do not have similar legislation. In absence of such legislation, using the case study of Alberta, we examined how equipped post-secondary institutions in this province are to assist students in need. Utilizing publicly available data we examined: 1) whether Alberta’s post-secondary institutions have a sexual violence policy which is readily and easily accessible to the student; and 2) the ease with which students can access university resources and support services for sexual violence. The results indicate that most institutions do not have an accessible policy and support services for students in need. We are hopeful that this study can inform those designing and advocating for sexual violence policies on campus to institute measures to clarify institutions’ sexual violence policies, increase accessibility to those policies, create policies where they are missing, and work on clarifying the availability of resources for students on and off campus.

Résumé :
In August 1996, several 4- to 6-m-tall Abies fraseri (Pursh) Poir. in Adams County, PA, were found bearing numerous dead branches and/or dead tops. The trees had been severely stressed by being ball-and-burlapped and replanted in 1993. Distinct cankers occurred between the living and dead portions of stems and branches. Associated with these cankers were abundant, reddish-orange, erumpent stroma, each bearing three to 10 similarly colored cupulate ascomata. The latter contained asci bearing two to four large, muriform ascospores that, as they matured, formed large numbers of small ascoconidia, indicating the pathogen was Thyronectria balsamea (Cooke & Peck) Seeler (= Nectria balsamea Cooke & Peck). In September 1996, cankered dead stems and branches from affected A. frasrei Christmas tree plantations in Avery County, NC, were found bearing the same pathogen. This fungus is known on A. bal-samea (L.) Mill. from northern Minnesota east through Canada to northern New York and Newfoundland (2). Funk (1) reported it from A. lasio-carpa (Hook.) Nutt. in (presumably) British Columbia, but gave no details. This is the first report of it in the eastern United States south of northern New York, a considerable extension of its known range, and the first report of it from A. fraseri. Voucher specimens are in PACMA (Pennsylvania State University Mycologica Herbarium, Mont Alto Campus). References: (1) A. Funk. Can. For. Serv. BC-X-222:142, 1981. (2) E. V. Seeler, Jr. J. Résumé :
Widespread, ornamentally valuable angiosperm orchids belong to the family Orchidaceae. The Dibrugarh University campus is rich in biodiversity. Therefore, a survey was conducted inside the 500 acres area of the university to know the orchid diversity inside the campus. The campus bears 22 different orchid species belonging to 17 genera. The presence of two rear species like Dendrobium nobile and Vanda bicolour was reported from the campus. The campus provides a habitat for endangered species like Aerides odorata. Dendrobium and Cymbidium are the two dominant genera from the campus. The campus holds 17% of total species found all over the Dibrugarh district and 6% of species found in Assam. The species found inside the campus are economically important as they can be used as medicine, food and ornamentally. Although the university has a healthy environment for orchids still, they need more scientific methods and strategies to be developed for their conservation.

Résumé :
AbstractSex on college campuses has fascinated scholars, reporters, and the public since the advent of coeducational higher education in the middle of the nineteenth century. But the emergence of rape on campus as a public problem is relatively recent. This article reveals the changing social constructions of campus rape as a public problem through a detailed examination of newspaper reporting on this issue as it unfolded at Columbia University and Barnard College between 1955 and 1990. Adapting Joseph R. Gusfield’s classic formulation of public problem construction, we show the ways police and other judicial and law enforcement authorities, feminists, university faculty, student groups, university administrators, and health professionals and institutions have struggled over ownership of how the problem should be defined and described, attribution of responsibility for addressing the problem, and prescriptions for what is to be done. Our findings show how beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the simultaneous swelling of the women’s liberation movement and the exponential integration of women into previously male-dominated institutions of higher education and medicine catalyzed the creation of new kinds of knowledge, institutions, and expertise to address rape and sexual violence more broadly on college campuses. New actors—feminists and health professionals—layered frames of gender and health over those of crime and punishment to fundamentally transform how we understand rape on campus, and beyond.

Résumé :
Middle East Technical University (METU) campus has such an extensive area that reaching the necessary information which affects campus life, such as the locations of the buildings, classrooms, computer labs, and etc. may be very difficult for anyone who does not know the campus well, and even for a student, personnel or a graduate who had a long time in the campus. An interactive campus map and a database structure related to this map which can be accessed by multiple types of users on the Internet can display this information with its geographical locations, and will reduce the "
difficulty for reaching information"
widely. For this purpose, data of METU were collected from various sources, edited, organized, and inserted into data tables. An interactive campus map displaying the locations of the physical structures and facilities in the campus was created in Scalable Vector Grapics (SVG) standard, and published on the Internet. By JavaScript functions, the map can be browsed with map navigation tools, including zoom in, zoom out, move and information buttons, and layers control. There is a search section on the user interface, which allows users make queries to find building and classroom names, and list the buildings and facilities according to their usage and category types. Data are stored in PostgreSQL database, transmitted through PHP scripts, and can be edited by authorized users through the specialized web interfaces. Lastly, web-based implementation of the application is entirely based on open-source standards.

Alexis, Lance. « A Case Study of the Involvement of Undergraduates with Physical Disabilities in Campus Organizations at East Tennessee State University ». Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2008. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/1899.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The purpose of this study was to examine the level of relationship that existed between undergraduates with physical disabilities at East Tennessee State University and campus student organizations. The study was designated a case study as it focused on one institution of higher education. Interview and document review were the 2 methods used for data collection. People from 2 select groups were interviewed on a one-on-one basis. One group was people involved in recruiting for selected campus organizations geared toward undergraduates and the other group was undergraduates with observable physical disabilities. Constitutions, bylaws, mission statements, and other documents offered by the recruiters for the select organizations were reviewed in an effort to discover references to people with disabilities. The results of the study are intended to assist in bridging the gap between involvement in extracurricular organizations and undergraduates with physical disabilities at East Tennessee State University. It has been documented that increased campus involvement lends itself to successful college and post-graduate careers, so it is a relevant issue to resolve. Campus organizations can benefit because their recruiters will have the opportunity to view ways to reach a new pool of possible participants. The findings could also prove beneficial to any campus experiencing a similar phenomenon.

In the spring 2017 semester, East Tennessee State University (ETSU) hosted an on-campus Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Through a series of discussions with other department faculty, it was decided to offer the experience as an internship for accounting students who had completed the federal income tax course in our accounting curriculum. Although one could easily see the benefits of VITA for taxpayers who received the service, I personally had no idea what a blessing the experience would be, nor did I recognize the positive ripple effects it would have for students, alumni and employers. This article will explain what the VITA program is and the process to develop a VITA site.

Résumé :
AbstractThe 70th year of the IAU has been marked not only by the Covid-19 pandemic but by the geopolitical tension between the United States and China. After almost four decades of cooperation, which began in shared opposition to Soviet Russia and a shared interest in China’s modernisation, the leaders of each country have become strident critics of the other. The escalating war of words has led to disruptions in trade, communications and visas and now threatens the vast and fruitful cooperation between universities and researchers. Much is at stake. Many US universities are in China, such as Stanford with its state-of-the-art centre at Peking University and NYU with a branch campus in Shanghai. Chinese universities benefit from visits in both directions, from bench-marking using American partner templates and from the return of US-trained doctoral graduates. US-China links in science are focused on crucial areas like biomedicine and epidemiology, planetary science and ecology, engineering, materials, energy, cybernetics.

Résumé :
AbstractThis chapter shares findings of and recommendations from a three-year initiative at the University of British Columbia to develop and assess enhanced and explicit instruction in academic integrity in first-year writing courses, an enterprise that now involves 42 faculty members teaching up to 5000 students each year. This project began from the appreciation that, as an institution, we needed to close the gap between our expectations of academic integrity and students’ understanding of those expectations, and to make explicit what is often treated as assumed understanding. This approach was intended to help students develop more robust knowledge and appreciation for academic integrity as a core element of the academic community to which they now belong. Drawing on the qualitative and quantitative data we gathered from students and faculty, including surveys, focus groups, misconduct reports, and interviews, I illustrate how what I call “pedagogies of integrity” have led to improved uptake by students (and instructors) of academic integrity as both theory and practice, resulting in a change in the number as well as type of academic misconduct cases, and have led to significant insights about the place of academic integrity in larger conversations about student belonging, wellness, and access. I share not only how the instructors in this project changed the conversation in their own courses, but also how these discussions are resonating across disciplines and faculties of our campus and beyond. Finally, I outline recommendations for next steps in policy and practice that these findings suggest.

Résumé :
Abstract The Tokyo Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) is the first cap -and-trade program of CO2 emissions in Asia, and it is unique in regulating commercial and service sectors. We examine the impacts of the Tokyo ETS on CO2 emissions and energy consumption by universities in the first phase. Focusing on universities allows us to estimate the effects of the Tokyo ETS separately from the economic stagnation Japan experienced after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 because universities are less likely to be affected by economic fluctuations compared to other sectors. In addition to the ETS, other factors may have achieved CO2 emissions reductions in Tokyo in this phase due to the influence of the earthquake. To deal with the shortage of electricity supply after the Fukushima disaster, several measures were undertaken, such as rolling blackouts and power-saving orders, particularly in the Tokyo Electricity Power Company’s jurisdiction. To capture the characteristics for each university at the campus level and their experience with being regulation targets of the policies mentioned above, we conducted a mail survey for universities in Japan and obtained panel data that contain information about both regulated and unregulated universities over 5 years (2009–2013). The difference-in-differences approach reveals that the Tokyo ETS caused regulated universities to reduce their CO2 emissions and energy consumption by approximately 3–5% relative to unregulated universities in the first phase. In addition, we find that the quantitative regulations, such as rolling blackouts and power-saving orders, also had an impact on the universities’ behavior.

Résumé :
Abstract The study area is a part of Dammam Dome that is situated at King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) campus, Dhahran, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The gravity survey was conducted as a pilot case study to explore part of Dammam Dome in greater detail. Gravity data were collected solely during night hours due to low noise levels. A significant part of the survey was conducted during the summer holiday period, , when there was no student are on campus. A total of 235 gravity measurements were made using a Scintrex CG5 gravitometer, while a Trimble R10+ differential GPS (DGPS) was used to measure the stations’ location and elevation with the highest accuracy. All gravity data were reduced using several algorithms, and their outcomes were cross-compared. The Complete Bouguer anomaly map for the campus was then generated. Several enhancement filters including edged detection and shallow to deeper source separation were applied. Data were inverted, and 2.5D and 3D models were created to image the subsurface conditions. The main purpose of this study is to better understand the subsurface geology, tectonic settings of the Dammam Dome by applying the high-resolution gravity method before carrying out any comprehensive geophysical (seismic) 3D survey.

Résumé :
A new dual-campus subject librarian program is being rolled out at the University of Central Florida (UCF) whereby several subject librarians divide their time between two campuses, the legacy main campus in East Orlando and the new Downtown Orlando Campus. As of Fall 2019, four UCF subject librarians regularly travel to the new Downtown Campus to provide library support for academic programs, faculty, and students who recently relocated to the new facility. Dual-campus subject librarians are also maintaining support services for their assigned academic programs that remain at the UCF Main Campus. This article provides information and reflections about how the dual-campus subject librarian model operates and how it impacts staff duties from two perspectives. The first perspective is from the UCF Social Sciences subject librarian, who supports graduate and undergraduate programs in The School of Public Administration and Public Affairs graduate programs at the Downtown Campus, as well as graduate and undergraduate programs in Politics, Security & International Affairs and Criminal Justice at the Main Campus. The second perspective is from the Main Campus Head of the Research and Information Services Department, who supervises the dual-campus subject librarians.

Résumé :
<p>The Campus Bridge establishes the link between the east and west parts of the new University Campus in Heilbronn, which is divided by the railway. The integral bridge structure, without sliding bridge bearings, is realized by a cable-stayed bridge system with a total length of 122 m. The main span at the rail tracks reaches a distance of 77 m. The bridge, which is curved in plan, reaches a necessary height of 9 meters at the crossing of the railway tracks. It is accessible at both sides by stairways and also by glazed elevator towers. The bridge girder is completely integrated into the stairways. It is formed by a double-compartment steel box girder with a high torsional stiffness. In the area of the railways, the bridge is suspended from an inclined mast with a total height of 31 m by five stay cables. The bridge deck is executed as an orthotropic steel plate with a thin layer coating. Micropiles are used as a deep foundation.</p><p>The need for an extremely short assembly period and the limitations in the location of the foundation of the mast were a complex task for the engineering team</p>

Résumé :
We study the validity of the Duolingo English Test for high-stakes university admissions, using data from Carnegie Mellon University’s satellite campus in Rwanda. We find that Duolingo scores submitted during the 2015 application process are significantly correlated with IELTSTM scores (r = 0.834). We then link Duolingo test scores to the IELTS exam, with results that are consistent with previous research linking Duolingo scores to the TOEFL® iBT exam. Finally, we infer CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) levels from this linking, and find that they are consistent with the design of the Duolingo English Test scale.
