Texte intégralThis research is a contribution to the practices in use in philanthropic societies, social patterns and social policies in paris from the end of the ancien regime to the july monarchy. It attemps to describe the activities of parisian philanthropists, inspired by the enlightenment ideas, as both public (voluntary participation to public bureaux de bienfaisance) and private practices. These private philanthropic societies, which neither had religious objectives nor ecclesiastical conduct, have a triple function : social enquiries, social action and social directions and advice. The study analyses the special aspect of parisian philanthropy as it was practiced at that time, its specific fields of activities (relief of the poor, "prevoyance", criminal laws, prisons, school, family, "patronage"), the relationship between donors and recipients, and last, the means, the impact and the legal results of its opinion campaigns

Texte intégralThe nineteenth-century Paris night is summed up in a repertoire of « scenes » inscribed in novels, panoramic literature and newspaper images. The nocturnal mindset associated with the period of the July Monarchy in particular is revealed in these canonical texts, as well as little- consulted documents, penned by relatively obscure authors. Engravers and caricaturists, novelists and commentators all served as witnesses of, as well as participants in, the nocturnal capital. This thesis examines the imaginary and the poetics surrounding the nocturnal city, from depictions of the crowds thronging the boulevards to the evocations of the solitary noctambule on a voyage of self- discovery. Also scrutinised are the social types of the chiffonnier, the prostitute and the criminal. The poetics of this urban and nocturnal imaginary is located in between a Romanticism of nocturnal impressionism and fantasmagoria, and conversely a realism that highlights the social structures of the night

Texte intégralDuring the July Monarchy, French society is deeply transformed by the liberalisation of its political and economical activities. The Parisian theatrical life is a field of experiment of these new practices. Our thesis first studies the different and contradictory ways of the liberation of theatrical activities, in particular through the history of eight representative Parisian theatres. The traditional conflict between playwrights, actors, audience, critics and directors is updated within the framework of a “theatrical circle” characterized by free-market economy, competition, contractualization. Field of experiments, the Parisian theatrical life is also a theoretical object, at the heart of economical, political, juridical, historical and even philosophical debates. The second part of this work deals with the theoretical aspects of the phenomenon: how theatrical liberalism is thought, legitimated, questioned and promoted during the period? Theatre seems to be finally free to exist in society, without being controlled by politics and to become integrated into the economic field as if it were an industry. But this apparent integration actually reveals theoretical and practical deep contradictions that weaken the idea of liberalism. The performative nature of stage and theatre raises the issue of the liberal definition of the individual and society. Hence theatrical liberalism does not mean a political and economical lack of interest in theatre. On the contrary, it must be studied as a change of theatrical regime which affects not only social, economical and political conditions of theatrical activities, but the relationship between theatre and society, which is totally transformed. The third part of this work is thus dedicated to the study of critical potential of stage performances that remain (or don’t) just as theatre seems to have gained his social legitimacy

Texte intégralIn the autumn of 1795 some members of the constitutional church met in paris to organise the re-establishment of public worship in france. The idea seems to have occured first to abbe clement, but he was encouraged by the doctor charles saillant. Abbe gregoire joined the group in december and shortly afterwards he gave a speech in which he demanded freedom of worship. This freedom was granted grudgingly by the national convention and the 'eveques reunis' drew up a first encyclical letter in march in which they established some rules for the organisation of the new constitutional church. In the next few months some churches in paris were re-opened. Of course the constitutionals had to face the hostility of the refractory priests, who benefited from the same laws and settled in other parishes in the capital. Despite the difficulties, presbyteries were formed in paris and versailles, but the attempt to elect a bishop of versailles failed. Under the directory, the church faced the same anticlerical hostility as before, but the situation improved after the appointment of cochon as minister of police in april 1796. A second encyclical letter, published in december 1795, encouraged the organisation of the new church, but relations with the pope remained bad. Through its weekly newspaper the 'eveques reunis' managed to spread their ideas. Clement was finally elected bishop of versailles in february 1797, but the paris church remained without a bishop. Pierre thuin, bishop of meaux, rallied to the constitutional cause in 1796 and helped prepare the first national council in august 1797, this council was the fruit of the efforts of a group of christians, who were motivated by their gallican feelings but also urged on by the conviction that their faith had to be expressed fully in a republican society

Texte intégralNitrite is an intermediate in many microbial pathways of the nitrogen cycle, but is also toxic for most form of aquatic life. It is toxic at a cellular level for microorganisms, and for the respiration of complex organisms. In general the elimination of this compound is assumed to be fast in the environment, and the microorganisms responsible efficient. In the Seine River however, nitrite concentrations exceed the European norm of 1 µM between Paris and the estuary. The nitrite is released in the Seine River downstream of Paris by the waste water treatment plants (WWTP) despite the addition of nitrogen removal treatments (nitrification and denitrification). In addition to its content chemical compounds and organic matter, the WWTP outlets also contain microorganisms which can colonize the environment downstream. In the water column, measurements of nitrification kinetics showed that nitrite oxidizers had a higher potential activity than ammonia oxidizers. Quantification of nitrifiers by qPCR showed that nitrite oxidizers, Nitrobacter in the environment and Nitrospira in the WWTP outlets were more abundant than ammonia oxidizers. Despite these facts, in situ nitrite oxidation rates were similar to ammonia oxidation rates in the Seine River, even if both were higher downstream of the WWTP. This balance between nitrite production (ammonia oxidation) and elimination (nitrite oxidation) results in a very slow elimination of nitrite in the water column. This led to hypothesize that low nitrite oxidizing’s efficiency was caused by either inhibition by pollutants in the Seine River, or use a mixotrophic metabolism by nitrite oxidizers. In addition to the significant impact on nitrite concentration in the water column, the WWTP were shown to have a significant impact on the composition and distribution of the microorganisms present in the sediment. The microbial communities of the sediment were shown to be highly modified by the WWTP outlets, and were heavily colonized by the Nitrospira genera. The study of the sediment showed that this compartment of the Seine River was a source of nitrite for the water column, even though the rates of production were not significant in relation to the concentrations of nitrite. The nitrite was produced in the anoxic zone upstream of the WWTP (3-4 cm) when it was produced near the surface downstream of the WWTP (0-1 cm). As a consequence, the sediment appears to be more sensitive to the impact of the WWTP than the water column. As a whole the nitrogen cycle in the Seine River was observed to have a very limited impact on the nitrite concentration in the Seine River as its different steps are balanced. This could be viewed as the fact that this nitrite pollution is low enough to not unbalance the nitrogen cycle of the Seine River in a measurable way
