THERE ARE SOME DATES AND EVENTS WHICH REMAIN engraved in the collective memory of a people. In Algeria these are: 1 November 1954, which sparked the eight-year long War of Liberation; 5 July 1962, which witnessed the end of French rule over the country after 130 years of colonial settlement; and 12 June 1990, which signalled the withering away of the monopoly of power exercised by the ruling party - the National Liberation Front (FLN) - following the holding of the first ever free and competitive local elections in the history of independent Algeria. No doubt, on 12 June 1990 the Constitution of 23 February 1989, which fundamentally transformed the political and social system of Algeria, achieved its most spectacular application. These elections aimed at the renewal of seats in the Councils of both APC: Assemblées Populaires Communales (constituencies), and APW: Assemblées Populaires de Wilayat (provinces). For the first time, Algerians were offered the freedom to choose their representatives from among lists of candidates sponsored by several newly-legalized parties alongside the FLN, and for the first time, the FLN tasted defeat.

Purpose: The article examines the trial of French General Paul Aussaresses (b. 1918, d. 2013) in the 2000s for war crimes committed during the Algerian War (1954 to 1962). Approach/Methodology/Design: A historiographical analysis covering topics such as colonialism, public memory, collective memory, counter-narratives, education, forgetting, and authenticity. Findings: Public history without individual memories or lived experiences of communities that have survived historical events can be viewed as inauthentic. It might even be called propaganda to present only state state-sanctioned accounts of historical events. Many governments will consequently enact laws to distinguish between what constitutes official national narratives—and what remains peripheral, or perhaps extremist individual, historical accounts. Practical Implications: This paper contributes to the scholarly literature examining oral testimonials in political and war crime tribunals, and the ethics of conducting public history research using media archives. Originality/value: Towards a greater understanding of collective memory processes, the case of the Algerian War reveals the constant negotiations, formal networks, and informal channels used to distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate sources of historical memory—and the consequences on culture, law, and society.

This article examines the representation of postcolonial memory in Tony Gatlif’s 2004 film Exils / Exiles. The constant movement that occurs in the film through travel, music, and dance reinforces the permanent dislocation of the film’s pied-noir and beurette protagonists. The film’s road-movie narrative represents, on the one hand, a gravitational pull away from the French Republican integrationist ‘centre’ towards an increasingly complex and diverse landscape of cultural identities linked by France’s colonial history, and on the other, a sense of nostalgia for an Algeria that no longer exists and may never have existed. In so doing, Exils represents modern metropolitan France as a dynamic and polycentric postcolonial space whose lieux de mémoire can and should be positioned not only in geographical and cultural territories that lie outside its contemporary national borders, but also in the liminal spaces that characterize the migrant experience. In line with the title of Gatlif’s film, the protagonists find themselves in a state of permanent exile, both from Algeria and from France. The ‘destination’ of the return to cultural origin, Algeria, emerges as a fundamental but nevertheless mirage-like lieu de mémoire that, notwithstanding its cultural and geographical significance, serves primarily to facilitate a deeper understanding by the protagonists of their personal and collective identity that has long been internalized in the unanchored liminal space of the postcolonial migrant journey.

The Duty of Memory in the Light of Autobiography and History in L'Amour, la fantasia by Assia Djebar ABSTRACT: In L'Amour, la fantasia, the memory is declined from the compromising ordeals of the childhood and youth of Assia Djebar. Djebar's writing, which connects Algerian history and autobiography, is based on personal and collective memory, as well as on female subjectivity. If the "we" of the narrator traces a collective past in the form of various biographies, it is individualized to report the memories of the author. It is through the presence of women-witnesses, their anonymous voices and their stories that their creator writes the story of her life. This plural writing in French language calls upon the Berber and Arabic language to reconstruct a new identity. RÉSUMÉ : Dans L’Amour, la fantasia, la mémoire est déclinée à partir des épreuves compromettantes de l’enfance et de la jeunesse d’Assia Djebar. L’écriture djebarienne, qui relie l’Histoire de l’Algérie et l’autobiographie, s’appuie sur la mémoire personnelle et collective, ainsi que sur la subjectivité féminine. Si le « nous » de la narratrice retrace un passé collectif sous forme de biographies diverses, il s’individualise pour rapporter les souvenirs de l’auteure. C’est à travers la présence de femmes-témoins, leurs voix anonymes et leurs récits que leur créatrice écrit le récit de sa vie. Cette écriture plurielle en langue française interpelle la langue berbère et arabe pour reconstruire une nouvelle identité.

As the nineteenth-century French state expanded its borders in North Africa and incorporated what came to be Algeria into France, French King Louis-Phillipe, President and then Emperor Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, and various ministers of war, governors general for Algeria, and other advisors and government officials all faced the question of how and if to naturalize the territory's inhabitants as French citizens. Recent literature on the French use of law to classify and control populations in Africa has focused on the French colonial administration. This article emphasizes instead the role courts played in sorting out the legal contradictions created by French colonialism, by using the Jews in Algeria as an example. The existing precedent of the Jews' forced de-corporation and naturalization in France made their collective religious rights in Algeria particularly problematic, and cases in the Algerian and French courts highlighting the anomalous legal status of Algerian Jews eventually led to Jewish, but not Muslim, naturalization by decree in 1870. This new interpretation of Jewish naturalization in French Algeria highlights the philosophical problem that Jewish collective rights forced the French courts and French state to confront, and the barriers to resolving it.

Abstract This paper is interested in the individual memory of wars in Maïssa Bey. The writer devoted her two books to the wars in Algeria - they were written to be adapted to the theatre: Entendez-vous dans les montagnes… (2002) and Pierre Sang Papier ou Cendre (2008). In Entendez-vous dans les montagnes..., the memory in question is that of the War of Independence against the colonization during the years 1956-1962, while Pierre Sang Papier ou Cendre addresses the French colonization that lasted 132 years, from 1830 to 1962. In other words, the first relies on individual and collective memories, while the second concerns especially the collective memory.

In addition to proposing a survey and subsequent analysis of the French-Algerian War in French-language comics, also known as bandes dessinées, published in Algeria, France, and Belgium since the 1960s, my dissertation investigates the ways in which this medium re-appropriates textual and iconographic source materials. I argue that the integration or citation of various sources by artists functions to confer a measure of historical accuracy on their representation of history, to constitute a collective memory as well as personal postmemories of the war, and to re-contextualize problematic images so that they and the hegemonic discourses they reinforce may be deconstructed. Moreover, the bande dessinée mimics secondary schoolbook representations of the war in both Algeria and France in its recycling of problematic images such as Orientalist painting, colonial postcards, and iconic images of war. The recycling of textbook images has the double advantage of ensuring reader familiarity with these images and of inviting critical interpretations of them. By exploring how the bande dessinée reuses colonial images as well as critical histories in predominantly anti-colonialist narratives, I seek to explain how this popular medium uniquely problematizes questions of history, memory, and postcolonial identity related to French Algeria and its decolonization. It is my contention that, because historical bandes dessinées frequently include or reference authentic textual and iconographic source material documenting the repercussions of the French-Algerian war on various communities, they represent a valuable resource to middle and high school teachers looking to enrich the state-mandated history curriculum. By using the bande dessinée in this capacity, educators exploit this medium as both a historical document (whose objective is to transmit knowledge of the past) and a document of history (which allows scholars to retrace the evolution of public opinion).

Soixante-dix ans après la fin de la guerre et alors que l’héritage immatériel de Vichy constitue aujourd'hui, selon Pierre Nora, un des principaux lieux de mémoire en France, la ville de Vichy continue d'être un non-lieu de mémoire. L'étude du cheminement de la mémoire de Vichy à Vichy s'avère particulièrement intéressante car elle met en lumière les difficultés pour les villes symboles de honte à dépasser le paradoxe triangulaire entre leur volonté (nécessité) d'écrire leur propre histoire, l’impossibilité qu'elles ont de se libérer totalement du poids écrasant des mythologies nationales, et l'inévitable prise en considération des contraintes imposées par le contexte économique, social et/ou politique propre à chaque lieu. En utilisant une méthodologie à la fois historique et anthropologique, ma thèse met en évidence l'importance de ne pas considérer la mémoire collective comme étant imposée par les groupes hégémoniques, mais plutôt comme étant le résultat d'un processus complexe au sein duquel les traditions, les mythes et les légendes locales occupent une place centrale
Following the June 22, 1940 armistice and the subsequent occupation of northern France by the Germans, the French government left Paris and eventually established itself in the city of Vichy. The name 'Vichy' soon came to be used to refer to the regime instigated by Pétain and his ministers. The shortcut was maintained and popularized in the postwar period, to the great displeasure of the Vichyssois. Whereas the Vichy regime has long been considered one of the most defining historical events of France’s recent past, in the French memorial landscape of the Second World War, the city of Vichy continues to stand out as a non lieu de mémoire. This dissertation investigates the wartime period in Vichy and explores how the population has dealt with the fraught legacy of the Vichy regime from 1944 to the present. My research examines how the interaction between national mythology, specific local concerns, and broader troubling issues have impacted - and blocked - the formation of a local war memory

Notre réflexion porte sur l’imagerie de deux quartiers à Annaba, Kouba et Les Allemands, respectivement représentatifs des ensembles collectifs réalisés dans le cadre du Plan de Constantine en 1958 et des ZHUN dans les années 1980. Les constructions identitaires qui y sont attachées sont largement liées à l’histoire urbaine et aux conditions de leur peuplement, le premier abrite majoritairement des cadres, des techniciens, le second reflète une sorte de proximité spatiale entre le même type de population et des sinistrés provenant des bidonvilles et de la médina. Ainsi, nous considérons que saisir l’imagerie contrastée caractérisant ces espaces, permettrait d’accéder aux logiques à la base, tant des actions urbaines initiées par les pouvoirs publics, que des modes d’appropriation des populations de ces quartiers, à travers leur itinéraire résidentiel, leurs mobilités, leurs usages, leurs interactions sociales et leurs relations à la ville
The efficiency of the representations to work in the dynamic socio-space ones and their crystallization through a strong imagery constitute with our direction a fertile object of research to understand the urban fact. Our reflection relates to the imagery of two districts to Annaba, Kouba and the Allemands, respectively representative of the collective units carried out within the framework of the Plan of Constantine in 1958 and the ZHUN in the years 1980. Identity constructions which are attached there are largely related to the urban history and in the conditions of their settlement, the first shelters mainly executives, technicians, the second reflects a kind of space proximity between the same type of population and the disaster victim coming from the slums and medina. Thus, we consider that to seize the contrasted imagery characterizing these spaces, would give access logics the base, as well of the urban actions initiated by the authorities, as modes of appropriation of the populations of these districts through their residential route, their mobilities, their uses, their social interactions and their relations at the city

Jusqu’au milieu du XXe siècle, la littérature kabyle fut essentiellement orale et s'exprimait principalement dans le genre poétique. Si les contes, les fables, les légendes et autres récits mythiques furent l'autre moyen par quoi les Kabyles exprimèrent leur génie, il reste que c’est la poésie qui fût la matrice de leur culture et le réceptacle de leur histoire. Plus qu’un art qui doit transfigurer le réel, la poésie kabyle a pour rôle de rendre ce réel, l’interpréter et le clarifier pour donner du sens aux événements historiques et politiques auxquels sont confrontés les hommes et les femmes de cette région. L’objet de notre recherche est de partir de la production poétique la plus ancienne telle qu’elle est arrivée à nous par les recueils de Adolphe Hanoteau (1867), Amar-Ou-Saïd Boulifa (1904), Belkacem Bensedira (1887), Jean Amrouche (1988) et la somme considérable établie par Mouloud Mammeri (1969, 1980, 1989) afin de scruter l’horizon culturel de la Kabylie et saisir, à travers l’étude les textes, l’homme dans son enracinement social et culturel
Until the middle of the twentieth century, Kabyle literature was essentially oral and was mainly expressed in the poetic genre. If tales, fables, legends and other mythical narratives were another way by which the Kabyle people expressed their genius, it remains that poetry was the matrix of their culture and the receptacle of their history. The Kabyle poetry, more than an art that has to transfigure reality, has the role of rendering this reality, interpreting it and clarifying it to give meaning to the historical and political events.The object of our research is to start from the earliest poetic production as it came to us by the collections of Adolphe Hanoteau (1867), Amar-Ou-Saïd Boulifa (1904), Belkacem Bensedira (1887) Jean Amrouche (1988) and the considerable sum established by Mouloud Mammeri (1969, 1980, 1989) in order to examine the cultural horizon of Kabylia through the study of its oral poetry

This research has been stimulated by the profound ambivalence which Jewish schools show in deciding whether or how to teach Jewish history. This ambivalence is first examined in the context of a philosophical analysis of the relationship between critical history and other forms of historical consciousness. Finding this approach deficient, a psychological examination of how Jewish students experience the study of Jewish history is proposed. A critical review of research into children's historical thinking leads to the suggestion that alternative research traditions may be more fruitfully employed here. As a result, it is proposed to apply a concept mapping methodology to the investigation of what Jewish students acquire from the critical study of Jewish history. Theoretical problems raised by this proposal are confronted and resolved, and a defensible research strategy is then formulated according to series of explicitly articulated empirical and theoretical assumptions. This culminates in the presentation and description of an instrument for the generation and analysis of conceptual representations of Jewish historical knowledge in cognitive structure. Two case studies are offered. These are followed by a discussion of (1) how these studies might inform debate about the consequences of teaching critical Jewish history in Jewish schools; (2) the possibilities offered by applying a concept mapping methodology to Jewish education in general.

Prenant appui sur l'intérêt contemporain pour les rencontres texte/image et la prolifération récente des oeuvres bi-médiales, cette thèse se propose d'étudier les structures et les qualités du photo-roman, en vue de soutenir que cette forme nouvelle offre un espace privilégié à l'interrogation — et potentiellement à la représentation ¬des événements traumatiques collectifs. L'exploration d'une série de travaux photo-littéraires produits entre la fin du 20ème siècle et le début du 21ème et caractérisés par une thématique historiographique ainsi que la concomitance avec une catastrophe historique suggère que la combinaison de la fiction et de la photographie au sein d'un même dispositif photo-narratif est susceptible de fournir une alternative à la problématique bien connue de l'irreprésentabilité du trauma. Nous considérons que la photo-littérature emploie les rapports souvent notés entre la photographie et l'histoire, la biographie, le temps et la mort dans le cadre familier du roman, tout en faisant appel au lecteur comme un acteur indispensable du processus d'élaboration du sens textuel. Les mécanismes complexes du composé photo-textuel permettent de mettre en lumière le fait que les histoires de vie personnelles sont pertinentes à l'expérience collective, ainsi que les parallèles entre des événements historiques traumatiques divers. Drawing on the increased interest in word-image interactions and the recent proliferation of bimedial works of literature, this study proposes an investigation of the structures and qualities of the photo-nove', with the contention that this emergent new form constitutes a privileged space where instances of collective trauma may be addressed, potentially even represented. The exploration of a series of works of photo-literature of the Tate 20th and early 215t century that are affiliated to historiography and unfold in the midst or aftermath of a great historic calamity suggests that the combination of fiction and photography within a single, photo-textual narrative may counter the problematic of unrepresentability raised by Trauma Studies. Photo-literature, as this study purports, employs photography's well-lçnown relations to history, biography, time and'cleath within the familiar schema of the nove', while invoking? the respondent reader as an essential component of the meaning¬making process. These elaborate workings of the photo-textual compound result in the highlighting of the individual life story's pertinence to the collective experience and the establishment of parallels between diverse historical instances of trauma. Thus, photo-literature enables the passage from history to an essentially connective type of memory and, subsequently, responds to a professed inability to enunciate the traumatic experience, by offering an approach that is reliant on affective investment and attention

This dissertation is a comprehensive study of the content, author demographics, publishing history, and media representation of the most prominent Vietnam veteran memoirs published between 1967 and 2005. These personal narratives are important because they have affected the collective memory of the Vietnam War for decades. The primary focus of this study is an analysis of how veterans' memoirs depict seven important topics: the demographics of American soldiers, combat, the Vietnamese people, race relations among U.S. troops, male-female relationships, veterans' postwar lives, and war-related political issues. The central theme that runs through these analyses is that these seven topics are depicted in ways that show veteran narratives represent constructed memories of the past, not infallible records of historical events. One reoccurring indication of this is that while memoirists' portrayals are sometimes supported by other sources and reflect historical reality, other times they clash with facts and misrepresent what actually happened. Another concern of this dissertation is the relationship of veteran memoirs to broader trends in public remembrance of the Vietnam War, and how and why some books, but not others, were able to achieve recognition and influence. These issues are explored by charting the publishing history of veteran narratives over a thirty-eight year period, and by analyzing media coverage of these books. This research indicates that mainstream editors and reviewers selected memoirs that portrayed the war in a negative manner, but rejected those that espoused either unambiguous anti- or pro-war views. By giving some types of narratives preference over others, the media and the publishing industry helped shape the public's collective understanding of the war.

Coal mining communities across Britain have often been argued to have possessed powerful collective memories of past struggles, though such memories have, as yet, been little studied. This thesis is a study of the collective memory of the interwar years within the mining communities of south Wales, and explores the ways in which the great strikes and lockouts, underground accidents, the interwar depression, and clashes with police and strike-breakers were remembered by the men and women of the coalfield. Using nearly 200 oral history interviews that were recorded in the 1970s, alongside newspapers, political and trade union records, novels and other sources, this study examines collective remembering as a reciprocal interaction between the public representations of the past, and the memories and attitudes of individuals. It argues, firstly, that individual memory did not just reflect or rework discourses about past events, but was itself an important agent in shaping and creating collective understandings of that history. Those individual memories remained integral to those collective memories, rather than being subsumed within or subjugated by them. It also suggests that the relationship between individual and collective memory should not be seen as necessarily oppositional, nor as between two distinct and separate types of memory, but rather as a spectrum. Secondly, it argues that the experiences of the inter-war years were understood and remembered within a number of distinct temporalities. Strikes and protests were often recalled within a linear framework, accidents underground were understood as a cyclical experience, whilst the depression was seen as a discontinuous rupture. It thus argues that conceptions of historical time were not singular, but plural and overlapping, and were themselves shaped and transformed by historical events. It thus traces understandings of time and how these changed at a popular level, rather than an intellectual or cultural one, through examining the memories, thoughts and attitudes of the men and women of the south Wales coalfield.

Representations of Germany's crisis of anti-foreigner violence and ambivalent government policies regarding guestworkers misrepresent this crisis and reproduce several myths: that Germany has only recently relied on foreign labor, that Germany is an unusually "homogenous" nation, has experienced little integration of foreigners, and is not and cannot become an "immigration" country. These myths hinge on a widespread "forgetting" of much of German labor history. This paper outlines this missing history. Features common to past and present "guestworker" policies are highlighted. An examination of modern German citizenship and naturalization laws suggests that guestworker crises derive from a fundamental contradiction between economic and political interests. The current crisis can be viewed as one phase of a longer unresolved conflict between economic goals and the definition of the German nation. Such a perspective is generally avoided, however, as earlier periods of conflict are erased through widespread collective forgetting.

This paper explores the cultivation of ‘memory’ as reflected in the teachings of Fethullah Gülen and the practices of the community inspired by him. For example, it discusses how particular places, themes, and images are remembered within the movement, evoked and re- enacted so as to create community and inspire a sense of participation and allegiance. Although the history of the Gülen movement is relatively brief-some forty years or less, prac- tices of sharing memories inspires a collective sense of community and even sacrality. In this paper memory within the Gülen movement will be presented in terms of its reso- nance with broader themes in Turkish collective memory such as Anatolian/Turkish Islam, the Ottoman cultural ideal, etc. In addition, the relationship of particular remembered sym- bols and experiences in the history of the Gülen movement to its current practices will be elaborated, for example ‘the Light Houses’ and ‘camps’. All of this will be set against the background of the topography of a movement that has ex- panded its imagination and its practice from local to national and ultimately global contexts.

In the middle of pandemic, January 2021 marked the 30th anniversary of the Barricades of January 1991. Media events have the function of transmitting social memory and teaching history to an audience of children, young people, and people who do not have these memories in their personal experience. Sociologist John Thompson introduced the concept of ‘mediated historicity’ almost two decades ago. He explained that most individuals in Western societies gained their knowledge on 20th century history primarily from media products (Thompson, 2004). The study analyzes the discourses of remembrance of the Barricades in the most popular media in Latvia: “Latvian Television”, www.delfi.lv, Channel TV, www.tvnet.lv, “Latvian Radio 1” (Media Literacy of the Population of Latvia: Quantitative Research, 2020), paying particular attention to the content of the remembrance (exhibitions, concert programs, memories, documentaries, photo competitions for young people, book openings, etc.). The theoretical basis of the research is formed by the theoretical approaches of media event and mediated historicity. Media messages was analyzed with the discourse historical method by Ruth Wodak. The research results confirm the impact of the current epidemiological situation on the sense of the commemoration forms and the emotions of the participants, new educational dimension and orientation towards the past.

Reuse of urban defensive heritage in AlgeriaThe growing interest in the heritage that contemporary society carries with it, and which is reflected in the extent of the debates and issues relating to its preservation and enhancement, runs up, most of the time, to the authentic memory / memory dichotomy. Dynamic. That being said, the reuse of built heritage in the process of renewing the image of our cities (use-value) becomes dependent on a global conception included in a sustainable urban development approach. The monumental heritage, subdivided, generally, into five categories namely; religious, hospitable and funeral, civil (public or private), agricultural and industrial and finally military, raises enormous problems as for its reuse. These are more pronounced towards the military-defensive architecture that is the subject of this contribution. In Algeria, defensive architecture occupies an important part in its heritage site. The typological diversity –the result of a long stratification from the early antiquity to the middle of the last century– as well as the dominant position occupied by this defensive heritage abandoned in the current urban landscape imposes a more urgent care. Therefore, we want, through this communication, to lay the first steps of a patrimonial approach to highlight this or these unknown military architectures and preserve our defensive heritage for which the collective memory is not attested and still painful. The reuse of the defensive heritage in Algeria must first and foremost go through its identification, inventory its various typologies, evaluate its current physical impact and finally explore the different urban alternatives that will result from its reintegration into the urban experience and for sustainable cities and citizens.

Since granted world heritage status by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1982, Old Havana has been the site of contested heritage practices. Critics consider UNESCO’s definition of the 143 hectare walled city center a discriminatory delineation strategy that primes the colonial core for tourist consumption at the expense of other parts of the city. To neatly bound Havana’s collective memory/history within its “old” core, they say, is to museumize the city as ”frozen in time,” sharply distinguishing the “historic” from the “vernacular.”While many consider heritage practices to resist globalization, in Havana they embody a complex entanglement of global and local forces. The Soviet Union’s collapse in 1991 triggered a crippling recession during what Fidel Castro called a“Special Period in a Time of Peace.” In response, Castro redeveloped international tourism—long demonized by the Revolution as associated with capitalist “evils”—in order to capture the foreign currency needed to maintain the state’s centralized economy. Paradoxically, the re-emergence of international tourism in socialist Cuba triggered similar inequalities found in pre-Revolutionary Havana: a dual-currency economy, government-owned retail (capturing U.S. dollars at the expense of Cuban Pesos), and zoning mechanisms to “protect” Cubanos from the “evils” of the tourism, hospitality, and leisure industries. Using the tropes of “heritage”and “identity,” preservation practices fueled tourism while allocating the proceeds toward urban development, using capitalism to sustain socialism. This paper briefly traces the geopolitics of 20th century development in Havana, particularly in relation to tourism. It then analyzes tourism in relation to preservation / restoration practices in Old Havana using the Plaza Vieja (Old Square)—Old Havana’ssecond oldest and most restored urban space—as a case study. In doing so, it exposes preservation/ restoration as a dynamic and politically complex practice that operates across scales and ideologies, institutionalizing history and memory as an urban design and identity construction strategy. The paper ends with a discussion on the implications of such practices for a rapidly changing Cuba.

‘Public memores’ are an imporant aspect in preserving a place’s culture and heritage. Actions of the government and society many times define/redefine identities of places, impacting collective memory of people in perceiving places. Conscious efforts are required to make and keep public memories alive. Insensitive and uninformed Urban Planning can lead to erasing history and heritage not just physically but from public memories as well. This Paper discusses the issues of Fading Urban Memories by taking case studies of two historic towns in the South Indian State of Telangana. Most of the Small & Medium Towns in Telangana, India, developed over the last two centuries from their historic core areas of the Capitals of erstwhile Samsthans/Zamindaris, land revenue admistration units/sub-regional authorities under the British and the Princely States’ Rulesin India till Independence in 1947. These Samsthans/Zamindars/ Jagirdars were ‘Chieftains’ of their own territories and ruled from ‘Palaces’ located in their Capital city/town. The palaces and historic areas of old Samsthan/Zamindari settlements represent local histories whose significance, memory, heritage needs to be preserved for posterity. Gadwa and Wanaparthy were two such towns, which developed mid-17 Century onwards becoming present day Municipalities of different Grades. The Department of Town and Country Planning, Govt. Of Telangana, prepares Master Plans for development of Municipalities. The surviving Fort/Palaces is marked by their present land use in the development plans, unrecognized for thier heritage status, thus posing threat to heritage being erased from collective Urban memory. The case studies presented in this paper are from the ongoing doctoral research work being done by the author at School of Planning and Architecture, Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University, Hyderabad, on the topic of ‘Planning for Conservation of Samshtan/Zamindari Palaces of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh’.

The old town of Arequipa - Peru was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000. The architectural style of the buildings in the city of Arequipa has evolved, adapting to the prevailing architectural trends over time, and to the constant earthquakes that have marked the pattern of its transformation through history. Some of the main identified styles are Andean baroque, neo-colonial, historicist, modernist, and postmodernist. This project proposes a qualitative, historical, spatial, and stylistic analysis of the buildings built in the city according to academic criteria and the collective memory of the inhabitants of Arequipa. The applied method consists of a stage-by-stage evaluation of the main representative buildings in the city using mapping and matrix tabulations from graphic documentation, in situ surveys, academic criteria according to the categories of antiquity, historicity, instrumentality and artistic value. In addition, the study aims to reflect the point of view of the buildings’ inhabitants, whilst becoming a useful tool for them. It will result in the development of a catalog of relevant buildings that will help to understand their representativeness in society.

Nablus old center stands as a typical Arab city with a relevant geographical location. Successive historical periods distinguish its history - from Canaanite to Roman, Byzantine, Islamic, Crusader or Ottoman - till nowadays. This cultural diversity has layered chronological strata on its urban fabric. Therefore, diverse historical characteristics reflected in the city’s urban morphology have undergone continued physical and functional transformations, not only gradually by time and various socio-cultural, economic or political factors, but also radically by earthquakes and war destructions. Present-day Nablus’ physical image echoes a palimpsest of urban/social identities and an asset for a very sensitive collective memory. This paper examines the formation, evolution and constitution of the old city of Nablus by a retrospective analysis that searches the morphological momentum for each phase in articulation with a reflection around its historical meaning for the city. Methodologically, this study is conducted on both urban and architectural levels, surveying street hierarchy and plot distribution. This understanding will be extremely important for an accurate perception of this tissue in order to advocate for a concerned idea of the city’s reconstruction, following recent urban annihilations. At a time when urban rehabilitation pushes plans for quick and immediate results, reading Nablus’ urban morphology can work as the lacking tool for an instructed and operative regeneration.

El presente artículo expone como los actuales criterios de protección de patrimonio urbano vigentes en los catálogos de elementos protegidos siguen centrándose en aspectos exclusivamente visuales, estéticos o artísticos, ignorando aquellos aspectos simbólicos o identitarios, vinculados a la memoria colectiva y la vida cotidiana de la población local. Asimismo los criterios históricos actuales remiten a la historia “oficial” ignorando aquellos aspectos disonantes o incómodos, convirtiéndose el patrimonio urbano en una entidad contestada. Plasmar en los catálogos oficiales aquellos elementos identitarios del patrimonio urbano se convierte en algo prioritario, sobre todo para las periferias, pues ese patrimonio local hoy sin reconocimiento oficial alguno y en riesgo, supone una base material ineludible para el afianzamiento y perpetuación de las diferentes identidades urbanas locales dentro de la gran ciudad. The present paper shows how the official criteria for urban heritage assumed by the official catalogues used by the Municipality, are still focused on visual, aesthetics and artistic aspects, forgetting those related to symbolism or urban identity which are associated with collective memory and everyday life of the local population. Additionally, historic criteria are always referred to “official History”, leaving apart “dissonant” or conflictive aspects. So built heritage becomes a contested entity. Reflecting in the official catalogues identitary urban elements, comes out to be a prior issue, especially in the case of the city outskirts, nevertheless, this local urban heritage at a risk situation nowadays without any official recognition, constitutes the material base for the preservation and the persistence of the different urban identities which come together in the modern metropolis.

This paper addresses the relationship between identity and territory from a cultural geography perspective. The case of study is the Popocatépetl Volcano settlements in central Mexico. Natural and social features that have determined the traditional local building and urban spacial solutions are considered. The theoretical approach is based on hermeneutics theories, namely, the symbolic-cultural appropriation of the territory, based on the meaning and symbolism underlying the cultural identity of the communities’ territorial ways of life. It is supported by the results of field research carried out over three years in two towns where university students and local people joined. According to Giménez, whose theory is fundamental for this study, the territories hold a symbolism for the peoples and their history, from which it follows that in rural areas spatial decisions respond mainly to cultural factors. The meaning that ancestral territories comprise for ethnic and mestizo groups, as well as their attachment explains the conception of being places of anchoring collective memory, in the author terms. The latter will be explained through the local vernacular constructive solutions of the volcano towns, their streets and trails, the complementary spaces and elements of daily community life such as orchards and barns. This paper does not overlook the current matter and issues that have arisen after several governmental policies, that together with real estate and cement companies, have disrupted local quality of life, people values and their idiosyncrasies. The cultural development of these towns took centuries to achieve; the mastery of the trades from the knowledge of the materials, among others. Three decades have sufficed for the globalization interests disguised as progress, to make local people let go their ancestral knowledge on how to build their dwellings and how to solve their public spaces. All these is in detriment of the natural resources leading to a loss of balance between human space and nature.
