As a group of friends, willing test subjects, a union of producers, a jury, a family, or an army, CHO explores the frictions and benefits of collectivity in both method and content. The three words that form its name provide a framework through which the practice engages with its context, questioning how the meanings of collective, home and office have been historically shaped. Targeting the agents most implicated in defining the current moment, namely the proto-state corporations, platforms and institutions that constitute Big Tech, CHO pitches a series of unsolicited projects to clients who are radically changing how we live and relate to one another. CHO believes that not only should these agents be held responsible for the drastic social and urban impacts they exert, but that they may become willing partners in designing new ways of living that respond to the social estrangement, imminent technological unemployment, and chronic housing crisis that have resulted from their unregulated conquest of market share. Far from neglecting the notion of collectivity, the tech world has appropriated its surplus value and replaced sharing with a sharing economy and then with a gig economy. The "capitalist collective" fails to recognize its misuse of the word; collectives differ greatly from memberships rosters. CHO believes that collectivity is a shared motivation towards a common goal. Fundamentally ideological, it is accrued over time through social intimacy built on shared experiences, both positive and negative. Spatially, this notion of the collective requires a new organizational strategy. Modeled on both the city and the home, forms of domestic urbanism are fostered by intimate encounters occurring at overlapping scales of interaction, redefining the notion of household. CHO focuses its practice on how this unlikely partnership can be used as an opportunity to rewire the collective with new priorities. The overall purpose of this essay, “‘I really hope you guys are enjoying this. Thank you so much for watching!’ - a qualitative and quantitative study of the interaction between YouTubers and their audience", is to study how YouTubers that play and comment video games interact with their audience, what kind of response these YouTubers receive and the interaction between viewers and fans in these YouTubers comment sections. This essay also studies if there is a difference between the response female and male YouTubers receive. The study is based on theories about fan culture, participation culture, collective intelligence, feminism and gender. A quantitative content analysis has been used to analyze 600 comments on six YouTube videos uploaded by six different YouTubers. The purpose of the quantitative analysis was to see what content of the comments most often occur as well as if the comment showed a positive, negative or neutral view of the YouTuber. The result of the quantitative analysis was used as a base for a qualitative critical discourse analysis, which also studied how the YouTubers behaved in the videos. The results of this study showed that the YouTubers mostly received positive comments about their personalities and their YouTube channel. They mostly received negative comments about the way they play the game. The female YouTubers received more negative comments than the male YouTubers, who in turn received more positive comments. The study also showed that YouTubers interact by talking directly to the audience and looking into the camera, by using the word “we” when talking about how they play the game as if they are playing with the audience, by asking the audience questions and by answering comments that the YouTubers have received. The YouTubers engage their audience by using strong expressions and by playing the game during a livestream. The YouTubers’ fans engage and interact by showing appreciation of the YouTubers and defend the YouTubers when they receive negative comments in the comment section of their videos. These ways which YouTubers interact with and engage their audience can be seen as part of a discourse about interaction and engagement online.

L'accesso a un alloggio adeguato è stato riconosciuto come una condizione direttamente collegata al benessere umano, diventata purtroppo un bene strategico per il mercato finanziario globale, provocando tensioni strutturali che raggiungono il loro apice nei contesti urbani alla periferia dello sviluppo neoliberista. In America Latina, l’instabilità socio-politica, il pensiero progressista (ad esempio, le teorie della Teologia della Liberazione e della Pedagogia degli Oppressi), il know-how tradizionale, la solidarietà e il mutuo soccorso e il sincretismo locale-europeo, hanno creato le condizioni per una tradizione accumulata bottom-up di auto-fornitura di alloggi, dove le persone che sono sistematicamente oppresse ed escluse hanno (ri)rivendicato il diritto all'alloggio e si sono impegnate in progetti politici più ampi. Riguardo a questo, sono stati fatti notevoli sforzi per descrivere la tradizione empirica che si è accumulata, ma ciò che è carente è il tentativo di collegare tale tradizione alle teorie urbane e sociali. Pertanto, questa dissertazione contribuisce proponendo lenti concettuali per osservare e comparare esperienze empiriche locali, in modo che i dati possano essere raccolti su scala regionale e alla fine si possano tradurre tali osservazioni in teorie.
Le condizioni abitative globali richiedono nuovi modi di pensare alla fornitura, alla gestione e al possesso di alloggi; quindi, dall'analisi di esperienze contro-egemoniche innovative si possono trarre lezioni preziose. Come metodologia è stata scelta l'analisi comparativa di casi studio e sono stati presi in considerazione alcuni principi derivanti da studi comparativi urbani postcoloniali. I casi di studio selezionati sono Sociedad Cooperativa de Vivienda Unión Palo Alto (Messico) e Asociación Cooperativa de Vivienda La Libertad 13 de Enero (El Salvador), entrambe hanno adattato i principi della rete uruguaiana di Cooperativismo de Vivienda por Ayuda Mutua (CVAM), che hanno ampliato in tutta l'America Latina e si distingue per la sua capacità di adattamento, resilienza, istituzionalizzazione e crescita.
I principali risultati della ricerca includono: primo, un modello preliminare per l'analisi comparativa in cui le ipotesi sono delineate sulla base di collegamenti concettuali provenienti da diverse tradizioni accademiche. Social Innovation (SI) fornisce una comprensione più ampia dei processi sociali alla base delle esperienze di Producción Social del Hábitat (Produzione Sociale di Habitat); Hope è riconosciuta come una forza collettiva per contrastare la stagnazione, organizzare azioni di rivendicazione dell'alloggio e fissare orizzonti raggiungibili basati sulle capacità territoriali; e Autonomy rappresenta il processo spazio-temporale di allineamento delle azioni di resistenza in una ricerca collettiva di autodeterminazione che implica la partecipazione agli spazi decisionali.
Secondo, un'analisi del quadro normativo nazionale, del sistema istituzionale del settore abitativo e dell'evoluzione di entrambi i casi studio. Primo, sono conclusioni che riguardano collegamenti concettuali e alcune definizioni originali; secondo, sono conclusioni sul modello concettuale proposto e delle sue categorie più rilevanti; infine, c’è una serie di conclusioni del confronto pilota che potrebbero fornire ipotesi per la ricerca futura.<br>Access to adequate housing has been acknowledged as a condition directly linked to human well-being that has however become a strategic commodity for the global financial market, causing structural tensions that reach their apex in urban contexts on the periphery of the neoliberal development. In Latin America, neoliberal principles have been widely adopted, and urbanization dynamics have reproduced socio-spatial exclusion and inequality. However, socio-political turmoil, progressive thinking (e.g., theories of Liberation Theology and Pedagogy of the Oppressed), traditional know-how, solidarity and mutual-aid, and local-European syncretism, have created the conditions for an accumulated tradition of bottom-up housing self-provision, where people that are systematically oppressed and excluded have (re)claimed their right to housing and engaged in broader political projects.
Since the 1970s in Latin America, exemplary practices of organized bottom-up housing claims have emerged, institutionalized, informed governance structures, and been impactful in terms of housing provision. Over this, considerable efforts for describing the accumulated empirical tradition have been done, but less in trying to link it with urban and social theories. Therefore, this dissertation contributes by proposing conceptual lenses for approaching and comparing local empirical experiences, so data can be collected at a regional scale, and theorization can eventually be produced.
Global housing conditions demand new ways of thinking about housing provision, management, and tenure; hence, valuable lessons can be drawn from the analysis of innovative counter-hegemonic experiences. Comparative case study analysis has been selected as the methodology and some principles coming from post-colonial urban comparative studies are considered. The case studies selected are Sociedad Cooperativa de Vivienda Unión Palo Alto (Mexico) and Asociación Cooperativa de Vivienda La Libertad 13 de Enero (El Salvador), both have adapted principles of the Uruguayan Mutual-Aid Housing Cooperative Network (CVAM), which have extended across Latin America and stands out due to their adaptability, resilience, institutionalization and scaling-up capacity.
The main outcomes of the research include: First, a preliminary model for comparative analysis where assumptions are outlined based on conceptual linkages coming from different scholarly traditions. Social Innovation (SI) provides a broader understanding of the social processes underpinning the experiences of Producción Social del Hábitat (Social Production of Habitat); Hope is recognized as a collective force to counteract stagnation, organize actions of housing claim, and set an attainable horizons based on territorial capacities; and Autonomy represents the spatial-temporal process of aligning actions of resistance in a collective pursuit of self-determination that implies participation in decision-making spaces.
Second, a comprehensive analysis of the national regulatory framework, the institutional system of the housing sector, and the evolution of both case studies in different periods. Third, a pilot comparative analysis of Social Innovation in Housing (SI-H) where the conceptual categories of the preliminary model are fine-tuned by reflecting over the results coming from the fieldwork, and data is used for cross-analysis. Fourth, results of the interviews and testimonies of experts which provide new perspectives for data interpretation and inform the mapping of the internationalization of Mutual-aid Housing Cooperatives (CVAM) network in Latin America. Finally, conclusions are organized in accordance to the research questions. First, conclusions regarding conceptual links and some original definitions; second, conclusions on the proposed conceptual model and some of its most relevant categories; third, a series of conclusions from the pilot comparison that could inform hypotheses for future research.

A quantitative analysis of carrier-carrier scattering for electron-hole semiconductor plasmas is presented. Material parameters appropriate for GaAs are used for all calculations. Calculations are performed using the Boltzmann equation for carrier-carrier scattering. Screening of the Coulomb potential is treated in the fully-dynamical random phase approximation. Results are shown for roomtemperature near-equilibrium and far-from-equilibrium plasmas. Also, the equilibrium zero momentum scattering rates are calculated as a function of temperature (T = 10K to T = 1000K) and density (n = 10¹⁵ cm⁻³ to n = 10¹⁹ cm⁻³). Ultrafast scattering rates (on the order of 10 fs) are found to result for a carrier distribution with vacant low-momentum states. These rates are shown to be associated with the undamping of the acoustic plasmon which influences the scattering through screening of the Coulomb potential. Further analysis of plasmon undamping is presented, showing the conditions necessary for undamping of the acoustic mode. Results from a separate set of calculations, showing the time-evolution of the Wigner distribution for a semiconductor quantum wire, are shown. These numerical calculations were performed using the collisionless quantum Boltzmann equation for the case of a lightly-damped plasmon and an unstable growing plasma mode. Comparison is made with results predicted by the linear theory (Lindhard). Results showing the effects of increasing the field strength beyond the linear regime are also presented.

The quest for home is ever-present. When looking at the destructive nature of urban planning history - urban renewal, redlining, block busting, etc. - it is imperative to see urban planning's historical impact on the communities vulnerable populations, particularly communities of color, have fought to call home. Understanding the sense of home is crucial to begin humanizing the lived experiences city-dwellers have in places. These places move beyond being just places into being home. Using visual and narrative-based methods, this thesis investigates how residents of one neighborhood define home. Ascribing importance of the home and sense of home can lead to better understandings of the emotional impact processes of displacement have had on vulnerable communities, equipping planning and design practitioners with the capacity to sensitively approach the potential impacts on people's homes. The community of Watts in South Central, Los Angeles, California serves as a case study in understanding what meaningful content collecting narratives about home can reveal. As a study in my own home, the thesis also operates as a journey of self-discovery in rethinking preconceived understandings of this concept. This research is both a personal and political statement about the power of maintaining quality of life for vulnerable populations through sustaining the home. As an act to fight against displacement, the collected narratives reveal the important complexities of how individuals define home, ranging from individualistic, to relational, to spatial and beyond.<br>by Alexis A. [My definition of] home is found along the surfaces of the city and within the body of its urban inhabitant. By reading the traces found between skin and surface, qualities of this dispersed home [and its user] within the urban landscape are identified. Using casting as a primary method -- a [re]collective practice -- home is identified and obtained [physically] along surfaces within the city. Sites identified between user and landscape will be tested for their specificity in an effort to prove that the dispersed home is reliant upon both subject and place. The posture of the body specific to occupation within/along a site, and the interaction of the specificity of the surfaces in contact define the space of the "release agent". This cross-sectional study extended Snyder's Hope Theory (1991) by analyzing the difference in trait hope levels, pathway thinking, and agency thinking of pre-literate (no prior access to literacy) and non-literate (access to literacy, but little or no prior literacy education) Haitian adults. The data were derived from archival records of 135 students enrolled in Haitian-Kreyol adult literacy classes in Petit-Goave, Haiti. Mann-Whitney U results indicated that there were no significant differences in trait hope, pathway thinking, or agency thinking between the pre-literate and non-literate Haitian adults. Both groups reported average trait hope, average pathway thinking, and low agency thinking. Cypher contributes significantly to the ‘underground’ hip hop scene in New York, as well as further afield; its rich musical and cultural roots can be traced directly from African oral traditions and cultural practices, and it reflects the epitome of hip hop culture by the way it advocates the principles of communication, knowledge and truth whilst enabling empowerment and fulfilment of its participants in a multi-faceted social dynamic. Cypher is unique in terms of its practice, as it requires little to no monetary or material input to take part, and is accessible to people from all backgrounds, but particularly to those from marginalised communities. It is an important musicological phenomenon which, seemingly unconsciously, contributes significantly towards the survival of hip hop; with so much discussion about the ‘death’ of hip hop, it is refreshing to have the assurance that certain practices within hip hop culture, such as cypher, are very much thriving and playing a large role in the survival, if not the existence, of hip hop culture as a whole. While there have been significant studies in hip hop culture in the fields of sociology and English studies, there remain relatively few published texts that have been written from a musicological standpoint. This thesis contributes to hip hop scholarship in a pioneering sense, especially since cypher is a form of rap which in itself is rarely investigated. In terms of the theoretical contributions that are made in this study, it is fair to say that cypher has a strong musicological and social role in its practice as well as holding great prominence in African-American culture; it forms an intrinsic part of everyday life for many of its participants. Using a combination of scholarly research and fieldwork methodology, using the latter to be able to account for experiencing cypher first-hand, means that this thesis presents academic research whilst remaining true to the essence of hip hop by keepin’ it real. With an emphasis on authenticity running throughout hip hop culture, the ability to reflect a genuine understanding of the role and dynamics of cypher has been of paramount importance in order to achieve credibility in the academic field as well as in the hip hop community. This thesis fully supports the notion that cypher has a highly significant role in hip hop culture, and, furthermore, that cypher reflects a team spirit that for some provides a form of cultural compensation and an alternative education; cypher also gives a voice to marginalised individuals and communities. This research marks cypher on the musicological map.

This study aims to generate insights into the business start-up and maintenance activities of Kurdish and Turkish business owners in catering and retail sectors in North London by utilizing a new theoretical approach influenced by Charles Tilly’s (1978) collective resource mobilisation theory. The research objectives are: - to examine the reasons behind the formation of business start-ups for Kurdish and Turkish business owners in the catering and retail sectors; - to identify and investigate the ways in which the ‘forms of capital’ (Bourdieu, 1986) are acquired and mobilised for starting and maintaining these businesses. Methodologically, the research draws on extensive fieldwork with 65 participants. The thesis draws on qualitative research methods that enable the participants’ business start-up and maintenance experiences to be analysed in the context of the existing literature, and allows for the generation of a new theoretical approach to emerge based on their explanations. The thesis makes theoretical and empirical contributions to the field of study. Empirically, it sheds light onto two ‘invisible communities’ that are largely concentrated in the catering and retail sectors. The field study for this project presents an original contribution by examining business start-up and maintenance activities of the Turkish and Kurdish communities. Theoretically, the business start-up and maintenance activities of Kurdish and Turkish business owners are analysed through the lens of collective resource mobilisation theory. This has three components: interests, mobilisation of networks and opportunity structure. The three components provide an analytical framework for examining the interplay between agency and structural influences on the start-up and maintenance activities of Kurdish and Turkish business owners.

The counselor is an important contributor to client outcome. Research findings about therapist effects are mixed. In this study positive psychology variables, hope and optimism, were evaluated with client outcome. The sample for this study consisted of 43 graduate-level counselor trainees in the first or second practicum semester and their adult clients in a university's community counseling clinic. Results revealed no statistically significant relationships between student counselors' hope and optimism and client outcomes. Post hoc analysis of student hope and their post-graduation expectations, revealed statistically significant relationships. This master thesis explores different forms of home-making among internally displaced persons living in Collective Centres in Tbilisi, Georgia in the context of an ongoing privatisation programme. Following the break-up of the Soviet Union the Caucasus have been haunted by internal conflict and strife leading to the mass displacement of large populations. Georgia is faced with an internally displaced population that numbers between 257 000 to 277 000 as of 2009. Around half of this population is settled in Collective Centres consisting of old schools, student dorms, factories, hospitals and other buildings that were transformed into what was initially meant to be temporary dwellings, but have remained the more or less permanent housing since displacement. This thesis explores how people make homes in the temporary dwellings in Collective Centres. Home is understood as a "spatial imaginary" where the physical structures of a dwelling are imbued with ideals, feelings and emotions that create home. Home is both a physical location and an affective space shaped by feelings and senses of belonging. Home needs to be actively created through home-making practices. In this thesis I will explore how home is both imagined and practiced. The concepts of agency and structure will be employed as analytical tools to facilitate the understanding of these processes. The overall argument is that people in all segments of society are perceived to have an impact on their own lives. As much as we depend on the social systems in which we have to negotiate, we are also contributing to the establishment of this social system. This thesis entails a discussion of how homes are made in the context of an ongoing privatisation programme that seeks to provide the internally displaced with durable housing solutions. The possible influences of this privatisation programme on home-making practices will also be discussed. IDPs have been kept on the side of society and not allowed to integrate in their areas of displacement. As return officially has remained the favoured durable solution the IDPs have become interminably displaced. This thesis discusses whether privatisation and the provision of durable housing solution can contribute to the search of durable solutions to internal displacement.

This is a collection of short stories and memories from the eight places that I have lived. Through these stories and memories, I reflect on themes of identity and community. I also consider the idea of home: what defines a home, how we make a place feel like a home, and what transforms a city or a town into a home. Each chapter also includes my own original designs and photographs.
The stories about Sharon and Westwood, small towns in Massachusetts, focus on childhood and familial relationships. The narratives about St. Louis, Missouri and Toluca Lake, California, consider the transition from childhood to adulthood. Meanwhile, the memories from Claremont, California, Silver Lake, California and Santa Monica, California all meditate on the idea of belonging. Lastly, the recollections from London, England, contemplate how a foreign city can become a home.

The complexities of issues existing in Kenya create a domino effect directly affecting not only the effective management and economic growth of Kenya, but also social and legislative constraints to the lower socioeconomic classes. Land dispossession, proof of ownership to property and nationality are ongoing troubling issues affecting increased orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in Kenya, most noticeably within predominantly poverty stricken rural enclaves. This research focuses on the bold move of stakeholders of Trinity United Methodist Church in Naivasha, Kenya partnering with First United Methodist Church of Winter Park, Orlando, United States of America. In 2010, they conceptualized Panua Partners in Hope, a transformational ministerial assisted non-profit organization program. These churches recently established support to orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in Naivasha, Kenya. Decisively apply all their available resources to stem the varying issues these orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) are facing. Whereby, the program is designed to teach self-sufficiency, wealth creation through sustainable income generation and entrepreneurship, and religious relationship development. Continued education is a key component of which Panua mandates. Ongoing (learning) education ensures each child remain in school – (basic, primary and secondary school levels). In addition to ensuring orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) are legally aware of their civil, human and property rights. Conversely, these issues being perpetual worldwide challenges, however, the aim of this research is to specifically address its impactive progression on orphans and vulnerable children (OVC). Thus, outlining their local conditions, the provisions of governmental policies, and assistance, or lack thereof to remedy such current challenges. Film cooling is a method used to protect surfaces exposed to high-temperature flows such as those that exist in gas turbines. It involves the injection of secondary fluid (at a lower temperature than that of the main flow) that covers the surface to be protected. This injection is through holes that can have various shapes; simple shapes such as those with a straight circular (by drilling) or straight square (by EDM) cross-section are relatively easy and inexpensive to create. Immediately downstream of the exit of a film cooling hole, a so-called horseshoe vortex structure consisting of a pair of counter-rotating vortices is formed. This vortex formation has an effect on the distribution of film coolant over the surface being protected. The fluid dynamics of these vortices is dependent upon the shape of the film cooling holes, and therefore so is the film coolant coverage which determines the film cooling effectiveness distribution and also has an effect on the heat transfer coefficient distribution. Differences in horseshoe vortex structures and in resultant effectiveness distributions are shown for circular and square hole cases for blowing ratios of 0.33, 0.50, 0.67, 1.00, and 1.33. The film cooling effectiveness values obtained are compared with experimental and computational data of Yuen and Martinez-Botas (2003a) and Walters and Leylek (1997). It was found that in the main flow portion of the domain immediately downstream of the cooling hole exit, there is greater lateral separation between the vortices in the horseshoe vortex pair for the case of the square hole. Incorporating traditional craft mediums of crochet and embroidery, I use digital technology to experiment with wording to graphically represent my abuse trauma. Due to the severity of the subject matter and the work ethic I employ in my art practice, using my hands and being completely involved is a form of masochistic pleasure. My process takes on a Sisyphean approach of penance for the sins of others in my work. During my studio practice, my process reaches a meditative state where my mind is clear and free of the burden. Once I've completed a panel of trauma, the burden is transported into the art and a state of enlightenment is achieved. I began this program taking an analysis from an external perspective, gradually shifting my focus of artistic practice to my internal struggles with memory and repressed abuse trauma. Oftentimes, the children of immigrants find themselves straddling two worlds. As Americanized minorities, we navigate torn psychological landscapes in which uneasy dichotomies are formed: living up to our parents' expectations, or fulfilling our own; embracing tradition, or birthing a new culture; admiring the lives of our family, but wanting different for ourselves. These tough decisions are further compounded by identifiers such as age, race, and gender. My creative thesis, a collection of fiction and nonfiction, examines these issues through three central characters. In fiction, they are the Latina sisters Mel and Nena; in nonfiction, it is myself. Through these stories, these young women struggle to feel a sense of belonging where
they are, be it at home, work, or school; among friends or on their own; in places they choose, or in places where they are put. Each of these characters is forced to consider whether they will ever find a place to call home. Research was conducted to determine whether there is a relationship between the theory of collective behavior and the selection of a corporate strategy. To conduct the first portion of the study, existing survey information was obtained from the National Association of Home Builders to investigate the existence of a heightened shared feeling of optimism within the home building industry. A test of the variance (ANOVA) suggests that during the housing boom the industry experienced peak levels of optimism consistent with the theory of collective behavior.
Using secondary financial data, the research then investigated the possibility that builders moved to a growth strategy as a response to that heightened sense of optimism. A test of the variance (ANOVA) suggests that builders moved to a growth strategy as a response to the heightened optimism by substantially increasing their assets, debt and shares outstanding, as compared to previous years.
Using the results of 150 surveys, the study investigated the theory that optimism lowers the effects of uncertainty. Hence, the research hypothesized that as optimism increases, uncertainty decreases, and as a result, strategic growth decisions become more likely. The research found strong correlations between respondents who were optimistic and those willing to make decisions that are consistent with growth strategies. The analysis found negative correlations with optimism and uncertainty. More specifically, the research concluded that as optimism increases, uncertainty decreases, and thus, home building managers are more likely to move to a growth strategy.
In general, the research supports the hypothesis that collective behavior can have a significant impact on strategic decisions among managers. While previous research suggests that information is the variable that lowers levels of uncertainty, this research supports the possibility of an additional variable: optimism.

The collection of stories When I Get Home explores the loss of home and the effects of war and persecution on migrants and refugees, as well as children's capacity for cruelty and one's own potential for violence. The short stories blend elements of the modem lyric story, horror, metafiction, travel narrative and more fragmented postmodern forms. In the critical commentary I situate the collection within contemporary short fiction and short story theory, drawing on the theory of the modem lyrical story by Eileen Baldeshwiler as well as theories of postmodern short fiction. While critical theory tends to prefer the experimental story over the traditional, I argue that the postmodern form is not necessarily more progressive than traditional forms. Instead, I contend that each story produces its own politics in the act of writing. I broach the ethics of voice appropriation when writing about characters from different ethnic backgrounds and ask how an ethical practice might be possible. I relate my representation of the home to the cultural and literary debates around women's writing and the domestic, and defend the domestic as an important literary starting point. I contest the ongoing separation of the private and public spheres in the cultural evaluation of women's writing by demonstrating how I have placed the home at the centre of my stories about war and persecution. I situate my approach within war literature and analyse how the home is represented in war fiction by men and women writers. I consider how memory and imagination have played a complex role in my stories about childhood. I analyse the gap between the speaking, narrating self and the seeing, narrated childhood self in the story and argue that this gap is used by short story writers to interrogate the practice of writing the self. Finally, I take into consideration the form of the short story collection and contend that stories should be read in relation to other stories in a collection and not as single texts. Throughout the commentary I emphasise the process of writing and drafting of the stories rather than focusing on the finished text, and in so doing, I demonstrate that when writing there is no preconceived ideology between form and content; politics is written anew with each story.

As análises propostas são baseadas nas considerações teóricas sobre identidade, identidade coletiva e representações sociais. Os dados utilizados no estudo foram coletados por meio de entrevistas abertas roteirizadas com mulheres que participam do movimento (nas cidades de Piracicaba e São Paulo) e de letras de rap (elemento artístico do movimento hip hop). Compreendemos que o movimento hip hop se constitui como uma possibilidade de identificação para mulheres que buscam um agir coletivo, seja este orientado para a reivindicação feminista ou para a reivindicação dos direitos daqueles que vivem em condições de exclusão social e econômica, utilizando manifestações artísticas como veículo/instrumento de relato e protesto destas condições. O hip hop, porém, por meio de seu principal elemento, a música rap, propaga representações sociais tradicionais referentes à mulher. Assim, grupos femininos começam a questionar o posicionamento inferior que lhes é atribuído, reivindicando outros papéis e visibilidade cultural e política<br>Abstract: The research aims to think over the women participation in hip hop movement, and to analyze the women social representation built by the movement as well. The proposed analyses are based upon the theoretical grounds on the identity, collective identity and social representations. The data used in this study were gathered through open oriented interviews made with women who participate in the movement (in the cities of Piracicaba and São Paulo), and through the lyrics of rap (an artistic element of the hip hop movement). We understand that the hip hop movement is constituted as a possibility of identification for those women who search for a collective action, whether be directed for feminist demand or be directed for demanding the rights of those who live in social and economical exclusion conditions, using artistic manifestations as a mean/ instrument of reporting and protesting of such conditions. However, the hip hop, by its principal element, the rap music, spreads the traditional social representation related to woman. A partir d'un travail de terrain (fieldwork) basé sur la méthode de l'observation in situ, on pose l'hypothèse que la culture hip-hop est un espace propice à l'expérimentation et au développement de nouvelles sociabilités juvéniles. Durant trois ans, on a observé les comportements développés et entretenus par les danseurs hip-hop, dans le cadre des différents aspects de leur pratique. Cette recherche présente les résultats d'une démarche inductive qui pose la notion d'interaction comme analyseur des comportements observés dans le monde social des danses hip-hop. Les données recueillies nous ont amené à distinguer des principes, des valeurs et des usages propres à cette pratique et/ou parfois à d'autres volets de cette culture. Cette recherche présente et analyse, en proposant les concepts d'expérimentation collective partagée, de compétences pass'port et de complexe du pass'passeur, la construction sociale d'une figure urbaine particulière : le "Pass'Passeur"<br>Hip-hop culture enables youths to experiment and develop new juvenile sociabilities. This assomption is based on a three years'direct observation fieldwork during which hip-hop dancers'behaviors and interactions were studied in différent aspects of their practice. This study proposes to present results obtained through a deductive process, regarding interaction as a means of analyzing the social behaviors observed in the hip-hop dancing world. The data thus gathered made it possible to define a set of principles, values and uses peculiar to hip-hop dancing proper and sometimes also to other aspects of hip-hop culture. Ce travail de these s'integre dans l'etude des nouvelles symetries en physique. Il se compose de trois parties. La premiere porte principalement sur l'etude de l'algebre quantique u#q#p(u#2). Plus precisement, nous developpons sa structure d'algebre de hopf et portons un interet particulier sur sa structure de coproduit. Les bases d'une theorie de la representation de u#q#p(u#2) sont introduites, d'une part, en construisant ses representations irreductibles de dimension finie et, d'autre part, en calculant ses coefficients de clebsch et gordan par la methode de l'operateur de projection extremal. Nous completons notre etude par la construction de quelques realisations en termes de bosons deformes des algebres quantiques u#q#p(u#2), u#q2(su#2) et u#q#p(u#1#,#1). La deuxieme partie est consacree a la construction d'un nouveau modele phenomenologique de rotateur non rigide se basant sur l'algebre quantique u#q#p(u#2). L'energie de rotation et les probabilites de transition reduites e2 sont obtenues en fonction des deux parametres de deformation de l'algebre quantique. Nous montrons comment et, dans quelle mesure, l'utilisation de la double deformation de l'algebre u#q#p(u#2) permet de generaliser le modele du rotateur en symetrie u#q(su#2). Nous introduisons egalement un nouveau modele de l'oscillateur anharmonique sur la base de cette algebre quantique. Nous montrons que les systemes physiques du rotateur non rigide et de l'oscillateur anharmonique peuvent etre couples par l'intermediaire des parametres de deformation de u#q#p(u#2). Un spectre de ro-vibration est obtenu sous la forme d'un developpement a la dunham de l'energie. L'objet de notre troisieme partie est l'application de notre modele de rotateur a la dynamique collective de rotation dans les noyaux super-deformes des regions de masse a 130 - 150 et a 190 et des isomeres de fission dans les actinides et les terres rares. Dans ce but, nous ajustons les parametres libres de notre modele ainsi que, a titre de comparaison, ceux de quatre autres modeles. Une analyse comparative est menee sur les energies de transition issues de l'ajustement et sur les valeurs des parametres. Nous calculons a partir des expressions des energies de rotation les moments d'inertie dynamiques. Une comparaison des resultats obtenus pour differents modeles permet de mettre en evidence le role des parametres de deformation de l'algebre quantique u#q#p(u#2)

The health care systems of developing countries, which are already weak, have to carry an additional strain brought on by the burden of infectious diseases. This added strain means that the health care provided is not of the highest quality. The use of home community based care (HCBC) was introduced as an attempt to provide basic health care services to people through the services of community health care workers (CHCW). With the development of HCBC in developing countries and the CHCW playing a vital role in ensuring that the lives of people living with diseases are improved, the need for information and communication technology (ICT) solutions is increased. The information that is collected by the CHCW is paper-based and it cannot be analysed and used efficiently and effectively. This study embraces the adoption of a socio-technical perspective when an ICT solution is introduced in an environment. A socio-technical perspective focuses on three dimensions: the user, the environment and the technology used. These three need to be in coherence to ensure that the technology is used effectively by the user within the environment. Therefore the objective of this study is to identify a list of socio-technical factors that affect CHCWs when they are using mobile phones for data collection purposes in home community based care. In order to achieve this it was necessary to understand how the socio-technical subsystems of the HCBC environment are constituted. The study followed a qualitative approach, including interviews and observations, to collect the data which will best enable the researcher to understand the home community based care environment, its people and the use of the technology to collect data in this environment, in particular mobile phones. A qualitative content analysis approach was followed to analyse the data and constitute a list of factors affecting the use of mobile devices for remote data collection in home community based care. It is hoped that this research will assist to inform the design of appropriate mobile health applications to both ease the burden of CHCWs (i.e. it should be faster and easier to use than paper) and improve the healthcare service provided through enabling access to patient records to all partners in the care continuum.

This short story collection follows diverse characters as they long to find their place in the chaos of modern world. As the trend of postmodern literature traces our failure to understand our lives and discover a larger context, we find that our reality is ever-changing and there is not a single constant to follow. We are disappointed by modern political systems, our lovers, and our own individual capabilities. The issue of belonging means finding a place that, both physically and mentally, provides context and meaning for our existence. The five short stories presented here examine social issues, such as immigration, political revolution, and social role of the media. At the same time, the subtleties of personal belonging--love, rejection, fear of the future, crisis of identity--are dissected under a looking glass, brought forward to emphasize the individual human element while the larger themes fade into the background. The main character of "Winter Velvet" speaks from the midst of the Velvet Revolution taking place in Prague, anxiously awaiting the outcome and attempting to understand the impact this revolution will have on his life. The narrator of "Metathesiophobia in Three Parts" possesses the kind of existential fears and anxieties we see in the eyes of American youth as they all face grim futures in a country without direction. "The Stage" explores the moments of terror an immigrant experiences when facing his first deportation scare. "El Pollo Negro" is the story of a Mexican man haunted by a black chicken as he attempts to build a life in America. Finally, "Jeremy Stock Live!" examines the role of morality in American reality TV shows ala Jerry Springer.; What is it that fascinates us about pitting tragically flawed people against an audience of judges and a host/executor? Direct observation of the child remains an essential part of the gold standard clinical practice in the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment planning for children with Autism and related developmental conditions. Clinical professionals acknowledge that observing behavior in the natural environment is crucial to obtain an accurate and comprehensive assessment of child behavior. However, direct observation in the natural environment is not feasible for wide-scale implementation into clinical practice. Another key challenge with respect to autism diagnosis is that there is significant time lag (about 20-60 months) between age at which parents first get concerned and the age at which the child finally gets diagnosed. Delay in diagnosis can lead to delay in invaluable early interventions which could impact a child’s future developmental outcomes.
A capture and access solution can play a role to fill these gaps. This thesis presents the design, development, and evaluation of a Clinician-directed Capture and Access System that can enable parents to easily collect in-home behavior specimens that have clinical utility and clinicians to use this data to complete a diagnostic assessment for autism. Analogous to a traditional lab specimen collection and assessment procedure, this approach involves three steps: 1) the clinician’s prescription of behavior specimens to be collected; 2) in-home collection and remote sharing of prescribed behavior specimens by parents; and 3) diagnostic assessment of behavior specimens by a remote and qualified clinician.
The contributions of this thesis are as follows: a) identified potential opportunities and challenges specific to the design and adoption of a technology solution that enables in-home behavior specimen collection and diagnostic assessment for autism; b) identified key features and functionalities of a smart-phone based Capture System that can enable parents to easy collect in-home behavior specimens that have clinical utility; c) identified key features and functionalities of the web-based Access System that facilitate clinicians to complete remote diagnostic assessment based on in-home behavior specimens.; d) demonstrated through an end-to-end study with parents and clinicians that parents can easily capture behavior specimens through the Capture System and clinicians can complete remote autism diagnostic assessment based on in-home behavior specimens via the Access System.

Despite concerted efforts to decrease costs and increase public health, the embattled U.S. health care system continues to struggle to alleviate these widespread issues. Because the problem of hospital utilizations among patients with heart failure is posited to increase as the population ages, innovative methodologies need to be explored to mitigate adverse events. Remote monitoring harnesses the strength of advanced information and communication technology to affect positive changes in health care quality and cost. By reaching across geographical boundaries, remote monitoring may support increased access to less costly services and improve the quality of home health care.
The purpose of the study was to examine the home care quality effects of remote monitoring technology in patients with heart failure and to provide an economic justification for its adoption and diffusion. It compared remote monitoring as a potential intervention strategy to a standard no-intervention group (without remote monitoring). Specifically, it analyzed remote monitoring as a viable strategy to decrease hospital readmissions and emergency department visits. It also compared the cost of remote monitoring against the current standard-of-care.
The theoretical framework of Donabedian's Quality Model was used in the evaluation of remote monitoring. A retrospective posttest only, case control study design was used to test the degree which remote monitoring was effective in promoting health care quality (hospital readmissions and decreased emergency department visits). Retrospective chart reviews were performed using electronic medical records (EMR). Analysis of Variance, Path Analysis, Automatic Interaction Detector Analysis (Dtreg), and Cost Outcomes Ratio were used to test the hypotheses and validate the proposed theoretical model.
No significant difference was noted in remote monitoring and usual care groups. Results suggested that remote monitoring does not statistically lead to a decrease in heart failure-related hospital readmissions and all-cause emergency department visits. Results of the cost ratio analysis suggested that there was no statistically significant difference in the net income between usual care and remote monitoring; however, data suggest that there were significant increases in cost and intensity of nursing utilization for the remote monitoring intervention. The Automatic Interaction Detector Analysis showed that the unfavorable results in hospital readmissions were due to a decrease in collaborative care and patient education prior to the recommendation for hospitalization.
The role of nursing care, whether in hospital or community-based care, in heart failure management is critical to quality outcomes. This is a collection of discrete essays, each embodying original research and bearing on the theme of gender and slavery at the Cape of Good Hope. Amelioration at the Cape profoundly altered gendered perceptions of slaves, both on the part of slaveholders, and of the slaves themselves. The amelioration regulations entailed a redefinition of the gender of female slaves, which was resisted by slaveholders and transformed by slave women, while slave men began to redefine their own gendered identities in this light. Slaveholders' traditional patriarchal self-concepts were severely threatened in this context, as they progressively lost power and authority, both to the new paternalist colonial state and to those who had formerly been subsumed within the patriarchal family. There are five papers, the first an introduction to the theoretical framework of the collection and an outline of the general argument as outlined above. The second paper provides a critique of existing Cape slave historiography from a gendered perspective. It examines the problems of this literature methodologically and theoretically, focusing on the implications of the slave sex ratio for the history of slave women. The final three papers are based on empirical research. The third paper examines the structural constraints on slave family formation in Cape Town from the perspective of slave women. The fourth and fifth papers explore issues related to infanticide and slave reproduction, and slave resistance in relation to the Bokkeveld rebellion of 1825, respectively.

The written portion of this investigation gathers materials and information that deals with the conception of the family unit and the house that is literally, and metaphorically, utilized in the notion of home. This focus on the structure as a metaphor for home has further reaching implications than the structure itself. Findings show that a Western view of community and belonging is rooted in a place of stability in one's community. The basis for personal growth within that community has a direct impact on an individual's development in it. (Goldburgh, 67) The fractured nature of my experience and emotions tied with the notions of home, are expressed through both A Home Divided and the Chez Moi series photographic series. The intent of this thesis was to write a memoir of my five month trip to Libya that explores cultural differences through my experiences as an American with Western ideals. This memoir is focused on the cultural norms of marriage in the rural town of Msalata, in the central rural farming belt north of the ever expanding Sahara Desert of North Africa. My goal was to produce a work that is informational while showing the humanity of the local people through my perceptions as an outsider with different expectations. It was a time of discovery for me about the value of my upbringing and the positive aspects of American and Libyan culture. Our five months in Libya proved our strength and weakness. Libya was not what I expected. The people were hospitable beyond my experience. The customs at times were primitive and required an open mind. My children and I were the token Americans that summer who were invited to every wedding and birth. I was expected to attend many social events from circumcision celebrations to giving condolences along the side of my brother-in-law’s wife. Due to my American Christian upbringing I shared the moral values of Islam, which made it easy for me to become Muslim and live an Islamic life. At the same time, I could not fully accept all aspects of Libyan culture nor did my husband. Hadi rejected many things about his culture because it conflicted with Islam. My thesis did not come out the way I expected. It took a different direction from what I had original planned. Since the invention of the cinema, people have been taking home movies. The ever- increasing popularity of this activity has produced a hundred years worth of amateur film culture which is in desperate need of preservation. As film archival and public history have coalesced in the past thirty years around the idea that every person's history is important, home movies represent a way for those histories to be preserved and studied by communities and researchers alike. The University of Central Florida is in a perfect position to establish an archive of this nature, one that is specifically dedicated to acquiring, preserving, and presenting the home movies of Central Florida residents. In the literature on B2C logistics of e-commerce, the two main delivery methods - home delivery and delivery to collection-delivery points (CDPs) - have rarely been compared with respect to their environmental effects. This is the case despite a growing e-commerce and the fact that the logistic part of the transportation sector stands for a great amount of the pollution in urban areas. In this report, the two delivery methods have been compared to each other with respect to their environmental impacts through a custom-made network impact model, including simulation using vehicle routing problems (VRPs) and a cross-nested logit model. The results show that one delivery method's advantage over the other (only regarding emissions) is strongly dependent on the distance to the distribution center (DC), the customer density, the density of CDPs and the demographics of that area. Home deliveries proved to be more sensitive to the customer density factor and the distance to the DC than CDP deliveries.<br>I litteraturen om e-handelslogistik har de två huvudsakliga leveransmetoderna -- hemleverans och leverans till utlämningsställe (CDP) -- sällan jämförts med avseende på deras miljöeffekter. Detta trots en växande e-handel och faktumet att logistikdelen av transportsektorn står för en stor del av föroreningarna i städer. I denna rapport har de två leveransmetoderna jämförts med avseende på deras miljöpåverkan genom en skräddarsydd modell, som bygger dels på simulering med hjälp av ruttplaneringsproblem (VRP) och dels på en korsnästad logitmodell (CNL). Resultaten visar att vilken leveransmetod som presterar bäst (räknat utifrån lägst utsläpp), är starkt beroende av avståndet till distributionscentret (DC), kundtätheten, tätheten av utlämningsställen och områdets demografi. Hemleveranser visade sig vara mer känsliga för kundtätheten och avståndet till distributionscentret än leveranser via utlämningsställe.
