Résumé :
The decay of false vacuum via the true vacuum bubble nucleation has been explored in Einstein theories of gravity with nonminimally-coupled scalar field using Coleman–De Luccia's semiclassical instanton approximation. In this case the false vacuum decay rates and the radius of the bubbles in Coleman's thin-wall approximation have been computed analytically and numerically with several values of nonminimal coupling constant and compared with the standard result obtained by Coleman–De Luccia in the context of scalar field minimally-coupled to Einstein gravity.

Résumé :
In this paper, we study the false vacuum decay of a single scalar field [Formula: see text] coupled to gravity described by the Coleman–de Luccia (CdL) instanton. We show that it is possible to numerically calculate the bounce factor, which is related to the CdL tunneling rate, without using the thin-wall approximation. In this paper, we consider [Formula: see text]- and [Formula: see text]-type potentials as examples, which have cosmological and phenomenological applications. Especially, in the [Formula: see text]-type potential, we show that the range of values in which axion decay constant can take is restricted by the form of the periodic potential if the CdL tunneling occurs.

Résumé :
Because of the presence of a cosmological horizon, the dilute instanton gas approximation used for the derivation of the Coleman–De Luccia tunneling rate in de Sitter space–time receives additional contributions due to the finite instanton separation. Here, I calculate the first corrections to the vacuum decay rate that arise from this effect and depend on the parameters of the theory and the cosmological constant of the background space–time.

Résumé :
In this paper, we study Einstein gravity with a minimally coupled scalar field accompanied with a potential, assuming an O(4) symmetric metric ansatz. We call an Euclidean instanton is to be an oscillating instanton, if there exists a point where the derivative of the scale factor and the scalar field vanish at the same time. Then, we can prove that the oscillating instanton can be analytically continued, both as inhomogeneous and homogeneous tunneling channels. Here, we especially focus on the possibility of a homogeneous tunneling channel. For the existence of such an instanton, we have to assume three things: (1) there should be a local maximum and the curvature of the maximum should be sufficiently large, (2) there should be a local minimum and (3) the other side of the potential should have a sufficiently deeper vacuum. Then, we can show that there exists a number of oscillating instanton solutions and their probabilities are higher compared to the Hawking–Moss instantons. We also check the possibility when the oscillating instantons are comparable with the Coleman–de Luccia channels. Thus, for a general vacuum decay problem, we should not ignore the oscillating instanton channels.

Résumé :
The random walk type eternal inflation in brane inflationary scenarios is reviewed. Unlike inflation in field theory with standard kinetic term, the DBI nature of the action describing the brane motion introduces extra constraints on eternal inflation. Constraints also appear due to the finite size of extra dimensions. In the context of false vacuum eternal inflation, we note that the Coleman–De Luccia instanton for a D-brane receives corrections due to the DBI nature of the action. This can enhance vacuum decay for a fine-tuned region of parameter space. Finally, some recent work on the stochastic Langevin description of the D-brane motion is reviewed. This leads to a modification to the Hawking–Moss probability distribution.

Résumé :
We present exact Coleman–De Luccia (CDL) instantons, which describe vacuum decay from Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space, de Sitter (dS) space and Minkowski space to AdS space. We systematically obtain these exact solutions by considering deformation of Hawking-Moss (HM) instantons. We analytically calculate the action of instantons and discuss a subtlety in calculation of decay rates.

Résumé :
In this paper, we study a type of one-field approach for open inflationary universe scenario in the context of braneworld models with a Gauss–Bonnet correction term. For a one-bubble universe model, we determine and characterize the existence of the Coleman–De Lucia instanton together with the period of inflation after tunneling has occurred. Our results are compared with those analogous obtained when the usual Einstein Theory of Gravitation is used.

Résumé :
Abstract We study the effects of gravitationally-driven decoherence on tunneling processes associated with false vacuum decays, such as the Coleman-De Luccia instanton. We compute the thermal graviton-induced decoherence rate for a wave function describing a perfect fluid of nonzero energy density in a finite region. When the effective cosmological constant is positive, the thermal graviton background sourced by a de Sitter horizon provides an unavoidable decoherence effect, which may have important consequences for tunneling processes in cosmological history. We discuss generalizations and consequences of this effect and comment on its observability and applications to black hole physics.

Résumé :
Abstract Membrane nucleation, a higher dimensional analog of the Schwinger effect, is a useful toy model for vacuum decay. While a non-perturbative effect, the computation of nucleation rates has only been accomplished at weak coupling in the field theory. Here we compute the nucleation rates of spherical membranes using AdS/CFT duality, thus naturally including the effects of strong coupling. More precisely, we consider the nucleation of spherical membranes coupled to an antisymmetric tensor field, a process which renders the vacuum unstable above a critical value of the field strength. We analyze membrane creation in flat and de Sitter space using various foliations of AdS. This is accomplished via instanton methods, where the rate of nucleation is dominated by the semi-classical on-shell Euclidean action. Our findings generalize the holographic Schwinger effect and provide a step toward holographic false vacuum decay mediated by Coleman-De Luccia instantons.

Résumé :
AbstractMetastable states decay at zero temperature through quantum tunnelling at an exponentially small rate, which depends on the Coleman–de Luccia instanton, also known as bounce. In some theories, the bounce may not exist or its on-shell action may be ill-defined or infinite, thus hindering the vacuum decay process. In this paper, we test this possibility in modified theories of gravity interacting with a real scalar field. We consider an Einstein–Hilbert term with a non-minimally coupled scalar field and a quadratic Ricci scalar contribution. To tackle the problem, we use a new analytic method, with which we prove that the scalar field on the bounce has a universal behaviour at large Euclidean radii, almost independently of the potential. Our main result is that the quadratic Ricci scalar prevents the decay, regardless of the other terms in the action.

Résumé :
Abstract We investigated black hole evolution on a quantum-gravitational scattering framework with the aim of tackling the black hole information paradox. With this setup, various pieces of system information are explicit from the start and unitary evolution is manifest throughout. The scattering amplitudes factorize into a perturbative part and a non-perturbative part. The non-perturbative part is dominated by an instanton-type contribution, i.e. a black hole analogue of the Coleman–De Luccia bounce solution, and we propose that the Hawking radiation be identified with the particles generated by the vacuum decay. Our results indicate that the black hole degrees of freedom are entangled not only with the Hawking modes but also with the pre-Hawking modes. The Wald’s entropy charge measures their entanglement. The full quantum-gravitational entropy is defined as the vacuum expectation value of the Wald entropy charge. With this definition, a shifted Page-like curve is generically generated and its quantum extension is readily defined.

Résumé :
Abstract Coleman-de Luccia processes for AdS to AdS decays in Einstein-scalar theories are studied. Such tunnelling processes are interpreted as vev-driven holographic RG flows of a quantum field theory on de Sitter space-time. These flows do not exist for generic scalar potentials, which is the holographic formulation of the fact that gravity can act to stabilise false AdS vacua. The existence of Coleman-de Luccia tunnelling solutions in a potential with a false AdS vacuum is found to be tied to the existence of exotic RG flows in the same potential. Such flows are solutions where the flow skips possible fixed points or reverses direction in the coupling. This connection is employed to construct explicit potentials that admit Coleman-de Luccia instantons in AdS and to study the associated tunnelling solutions. Thin-walled instantons are observed to correspond to dual field theories with a parametrically large value of the dimension ∆ for the operator dual to the scalar field, casting doubt on the attainability of this regime in holography. From the boundary perspective, maximally symmetric instantons describe the probability of symmetry breaking of the dual QFT in de Sitter. It is argued that, even when such instantons exist, they do not imply an instability of the same theory on flat space or on R × S3.
