The Swedish Armed Forces are transforming to be able to conduct military operations in today’sstandard conflicts. To meet the demands that the new type of conflict represents the transformationrequires a development of new doctrines and tactical manuals. .Developments of new weapon systems are proportionately much more expensive than conceptualdevelopments. The armed forces’ combat capability must be adapted to existing military technologicalconditions. During the 1980s and 1990s Close Air Support aircrafts were represented by heavily armedand armoured fixed- and rotary-wing aircrafts which carried out CAS missions in close proximity tofriendly forces. These CAS platforms are today, more or less, represented by traditional fighter andstriker aircrafts. This observation will form the basis of this research and thereby formulate thescientific question.Has the significance of Close Air Support been changed and is it therefore made it possible to useother combat aircrafts for Close Air Support missions? The purpose of this thesis is to examine how Close Air Support has been put in practise in threemodern operations and to ascertain how this has developed the concept to what it is today.Furthermore the thesis will also clarify the significance of the concept and thereby contribute withknowledge to the concept of Close Air Support. The research will analyze the concept’s historical origin and the theory behind combined arms. Thisanalysis will form the basis for the following case studies, which comprise three military operationscarried out after 1990. The research will focus on coordination, platforms and operational and tacticaleffects. The final discussion will show that coordination of CAS has been executed differently during the threestudied operations. Today’s conflicts make it possible to use weapon systems in an extended role. Thiswill explain why different combat aircraft could be used in a CAS role. The research shows that theCAS concept hasn’t changed. However, CAS has been performed in different ways depending on theoperational circumstances within each operation. The thesis suggests three new research areas within the subject that could be appropriate for furtherexaminations.

Emanuel, Taylor C. « Gunship Diplomacy : carrier based close air support for joint expeditionary forces ». Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/30812.

Résumé :
This study examines whether current and future strategy, doctrine, and programmed systems are suitable to perform fire support and specifically, close air support (CAS)and close air support/troops-in-contact (CAS/TIC) missions for joint expeditionary warfare. Naval forces will provide the "enabling" power for this new come-as-you-are environment. To offset reductions in organic fire support, more frequent and sustained application of CAS and CAS/TIC will be required by joint expeditionary forces. To comparatively analyze selected CAS platforms, the study uses four air-to-ground measures of merit (MOM); (1) target detection/recognition; (2) lethality; (3) survivability; and (4) combat persistence. The results paint and bleak picture of current capability. Therefore, a Carrier-Based Gunship (CBG) concept is presented to fill this void. The concept is more important than the selection of one particular platform. For illustrative purposes, three CBG candidates were evaluated using AC-130 gunship systems and employment as a guide coupled with the four MOM as the baseline. The CBG would be situated on a forward-deployed carrier, close enough to the objective area to provide sustained CAS/TIC support for joint expeditionary forces.

Résumé :
There are many kinds of joint operations and combinations of combined arms. This thesis puts its focus on Close Air Support, CAS. Throughout history there have been several cases of success, regarding these kinds of operations, but also failure. Much can be taught from organizational behaviour studies, applied on these military organisations in their cooperation with each other. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the cooperation between the Swedish army and air force to determine the functionality of their process. This is done by text analysis and interviews. The study shows that the cooperation works at its bets at the unit level. The Swedish armed forces have a wide range of tasks it wishes to fulfil together with broad priorities. As of now, there is a balance between the two services´ needs and what they can deliver. Although there are indications that the army´s requirements might increase in the future. The air force focus on homeland defence might push this balance even further, though CAS is not a priority in that scenario. If there is a significant change in the balance of demand between the two services, at least one of the services might have to reconsider their whole line of business.    Key words: Collaboration, Organizational development, Close Air Support.
Nyckelord: Samverkan, Organisationsutveckling, Close Air Support.

Résumé :
Identity and power are important components of any relationship, especially one as intimate as the connection between marital partners. Social support is expected and elicited within these relationships, however most social support researchers have not incorporated sociological theoretical orientations that would provide insight into the structural components of the relationship and their impact. Using ideas derived from Identity Control Theory and Power Dependence Theory this research investigates the impact of these powerful social factors. Specifically, I hypothesize that marital partners who are similar in their identities will be better able to offer social support in conversations in which those identities are salient. I also hypothesize that partners who are similar in structural power will offer more support than those who are dissimilar.

Iannarino, Nicholas Thomas. « Social Support in Young Adult Cancer Survivors and Their Close Social Network Members ». UKnowledge, 2014. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/comm_etds/27.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
A cancer diagnosis often causes biographical disruption in the lives of young adult (i.e., 18-39; YA) survivors and their close social network members (i.e., familial, plutonic, or romantic relational partners with whom the survivor has a salient relationship; SNM). In order to integrate their illness into their lives, normatively regain balance and equilibrium, and achieve a “new normal” following a cancer diagnosis, YA survivors and their close SNMs must work to reconstruct their biographies by engaging in tangible interpersonal communication processes often used to initiate and maintain relationships. However, YA cancer survivors report facing social struggles due to the biographical disruption of their illness across the trajectory of diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship. To learn more about their unique social experience of cancer, I conducted private, open-ended narrative interviews with 20 YA survivor-close SNM dyads, 1 YA survivor-SNM close triad, and 10 individual YA survivors (N = 51). I used thematic narrative analysis to determine how and why YA cancer survivors and their close SNMs communicate social support messages with romantic partners, family, friends, peers, and one another. By examining the narratives of YA survivors, their close SNMs, and the dyad itself, this dissertation explores the interpersonal communication processes used to initiate and maintain relationships across the illness trajectory by focusing on the barriers and facilitators these individuals experience in the communication of social support. Through their individual narrative accounts, YA survivors explained why and how they perceived various support attempts from others to be positive or negative, and their close SNMs detailed their attempts to navigate the YA’s larger support network and assume the duties inherent in their newly-adopted “top supporter” role. In addition, reports from YAs and their SNMs revealed that they often engaged in mutual pretense, a unique and often unsustainable form of support that occurred between YA survivors and their close SNMs involving topic avoidance and emotional management. Implications for the advancement of interpersonal communication theory and for practical intervention targeting YA patients and survivors, their close SNMs, and medical practitioners are also discussed.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In this qualitative study, gay and straight men's experiences in male friendships were examined in order to explore differences and similarities between the participants' construction of masculinities. A social constructionist approach to understanding human experience was utilised, through an examination of in-depth interviews with 21 men (10 straight, 11 gay). The data was interpreted following a hermeneutic phenomenological approach, utilising the lens of Gestalt therapy theory, resulting in a series of essence statements, which expressed the underlying structures of the participants' experiences of masculinity. These findings revealed constructions of masculinities which were explored in relation to the participants' close male friendships and support seeking processes. A major finding was the importance of shame as a regulating variable in the gay and straight participants' construction of their masculinity. Shame or avoidance of shame appeared to be linked to the influence of a dominant heterosexual masculine ideology. It was revealed that whilst dominant masculine ideologies were experienced as powerful 'background' beliefs, the participants were able to construct contemporaneous masculinities that were contextual and field sensitive. Thus the concept of masculinities appears inherently fluid, and changeable. Furthermore, the results indicated different definitions of friendship which appeared to be related to different constructions of masculinity. The gay participants' friendships were described in interpersonal terms compared with the straight participants' friendships which appeared more focussed on external activities. The experience of shame, or fear of the potential for shame emerged as important variables that influenced intimacy, closeness and distance in gay and straight participants' friendships and their ability to seek and receive emotional social support. The finding that men appear to seek help from male friends in ways that are consistent with their constructions of masculinity has important implications for fostering supportive interactions between men. Furthermore, an understanding of men's experiences regarding what constitutes a supportive interaction and defines intimacy appears important as these views will most likely guide their decision making processes about from whom and how they might seek support. Finally, the possibilities for constructing new masculinities are explored as men's friendships and support behaviour are both influenced by, and in turn influence, the construction of masculinities.

Résumé :
This thesis presents a qualitative analysis of the Marine experience in the Korean War with air power. Evidence suggests that Marine Close Air Support in the early months of the Korean War was superior to Navy and Air Force CAS. The Marine Corps collected interviews during the war, which support this conclusion. Interviews were taken with pilots, commanders, tactical air coordinators, forward air controllers, mechanics, infantrymen and other front line soldiers who experienced the CAS in the opening months of the war. Many factors contributed to this qualitative difference including; training, doctrine, control system, and type of planes used. This qualitative difference amounted to the superiority of Marine CAS in the opening months of the Korean War.

In the present time amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an untreatable disease and the course of the disease is often very fast. Nursing of the patients has to be specific. Purpose: The purpose of this literature study was to elucidate caregivers encounter of patients with an untreatable disease like ALS and those who are close to the patients. Method: To answer our research questions we have chosen to do a literature study witch is based on ten scientific articles. The articles were quality rated using Carlsson and Eimans ratingscale for qualitative and quantitative studies. As a frame of reference we used a model by Carnevali. Result: To be one of those who are close to the patients with ALS can affect them in a negative way in their daily life. All patients and those who are close to them have to be encountered by their own needs and individual information is an important part of nursing. Conclusion: From our result we made the conclusions that all patients and those who are close to them are individuals and should be encountered by their personal needs.

This paper aims to examine the need for indirect fire and Close Air Support of military operations in mountainous terrain, highlighting the aspects that affect the use of Swedish armed forces units and their technical systems in the mountain environment. To answer the purpose of this paper the following question was asked: How did U.S. forces use the basic capacity of effect to the opponent during Operation Anaconda? A case study and text analysis has been used as a scientific method and technique for this thesis. Initially texts about Operation Anaconda were studied on how the operation was carried out. Then Swedish doctrines and regulations relating to theories of basic abilities and the effect achieved in the battle were studied. Finally, the writer analyzed how the U.S. used the basic capacity of effect during Operation Anaconda, with an emphasis on indirect fire and close air support. The main conclusions are that the battle is carried out in three dimensions with indirect fire, direct fire and mines. All are essential to achieved effect in the battle. If one dimension diminishes the other dimensions should increase by more elements.

Hughes-Jones, Megan. « Women's recovery in the eating disorders : exploring the role of perceived mutuality in close relationships and social support satisfaction ». Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/7145.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Despite significant research attesting to the importance of interpersonal relationships and social support to recovery from an eating disorder, little is known about the relational qualities associated with support satisfaction. Furthermore, the extent to which interpersonal relationships and support satisfaction are associated with recovery, specifically, eating disorder symptom severity and readiness to make changes, remains unanswered in the literature. Relational/Cultural Theory (RCT) emphasizes the importance of relationships to women’s well-being and mental health. RCT posits that chronic disconnection in one’s relationships may result in mental distress, including the development of an eating disorder. Consistent with this perspective on the etiology of an eating disorder, RCT suggests that recovery from an eating disorder may occur within the context of mutual relationships. The current study employed RCT as a framework to explore associations among perceived mutuality in a close relationship, social support satisfaction, eating disorder and psychiatric symptomatology, and readiness for change in a clinical sample (N = 31) of adult women (> 18 years) struggling with an eating disorder. The study analyzed cross-sectional data collected from the St. Paul’s Hospital Eating Disorders Program, in Vancouver, BC, Canada. As per RCT, it was hypothesized that perceived mutuality in a close relationship and social support satisfaction would be significantly related, and that these two psychosocial variables would be associated with lower eating disorder symptoms and higher readiness for change. Correlational analyses were employed to address the study’s research question. Results did not support any of the predicted relationships. Due to the unexpected primary findings, several exploratory post-hoc analyses were conducted. These follow-up analyses extended the study’s investigation of perceived mutuality, social support satisfaction, and eating disorder and psychiatric symptomatology. Results suggest that certain elements of mutuality in a close relationship may be particularly important to support satisfaction. Furthermore, results offered some support for a relationship between perceived mutuality and attitudinal dimensions characteristic of the eating disorders. Overall, however, study findings were inconsistent with hypotheses based on RCT, and thus, question its application as a model within which to understand recovery from an eating disorder for adult women in a clinical context.

Rogers, Carol. « Beyond bereavement : is close kinship enough ? : an exploration of the bereavement experiences and support in Gypsy and Traveller families ». Thesis, Bucks New University, 2017. http://bucks.collections.crest.ac.uk/15673/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The purpose of this research is to gain an understanding of the cultural norms and community practices influencing the bereavement experiences of Romani Gypsy and Irish Traveller families in England. The aims and objectives set out to explore the impact of bereavement on individuals and wider family members. To identify whether bereavement has a long term impact on their life experiences, and to explore the extent to which membership of a close-knit family and community, with explicit cultural norms offers effective support for managing the processes of loss, or potentially exacerbates the risk of long-term complicated grief. The research was undertaken in partnership with the Child Bereavement UK and a number of Gypsy and Traveller support organisations. The study has a phenomenological paradigm and uses a narrative approach, focus groups and narrative conversations to gain an understanding of the bereavement experiences of Gypsy and Traveller women. Consideration is also given to potential bereavement support needs and how best organisations can tailor their policy and practice to meet the needs of these ‘hard to reach’ populations. Gypsies and Travellers remain one of the most marginalised ethnic minority groups in Britain. Policy enactments and a decline in stopping places have impacted on their cultural tradition of nomadism, leading to significant socioeconomic challenges and rapid cultural change in recent decades. Additionally, Gypsies and Travellers face significant health inequalities, including a reduced life expectancy of between ten to twelve years compared to ‘mainstream’ populations. Furthermore considerably higher levels of suicide, maternal and infant mortality, miscarriage and stillbirth are reported. The numerous intergenerational bereavements experienced can result in complicated and prolonged grief reactions with long term health implications including depression, anxiety and an increase in risk taking behaviours including alcohol and substance misuse. The research findings suggest that the close knit nature of Gypsy and Traveller communities means that the death of a relative is felt with great intensity, articulated by some research participants as an event that they ‘never come to terms with’. Consequently complex family relationships and stoic attitudes result in personal grief responses often becoming hidden losses as highly protective behaviours place the needs of others above that of the individual; thus family becomes a barrier rather than support mechanism following bereavement. The research offers new insights and understanding of the bereavement experiences of Gypsies and Travellers, recognising the increased vulnerability to complicate grief responses resulting from the often frequent, multiple intergenerational deaths. These findings highlight the need for specialist community bereavement support resources and services.

Résumé :
HIV/AIDS is an important health issue worldwide, and in Tanzania the estimated amount of people living with HIV year 2012, was around 1,5 million people. Many of them are living a restricted life at home, leaving the responsibility of care to their next of kin. This leads to a big number of care providers lacking both financial and educational resources, making it difficult to provide care. The aim of this study was to investigate next of kin’s experiences of being a care provider for a relative infected with HIV/AIDS. A qualitative design with semi-structured interviews was chosen and data were analysed using the qualitative content analysis. The result showed that the majority of care providers lived in poverty and experienced a lack of resources, unabling them to give sufficient care to the patients. Many care providers were depending on the support of food, finances and practical help from organizations, neighbours and relatives. Common care providing tasks consisted of helping the patients with their personal hygiene, washing their clothes and bed sheets, cooking, cleaning and looking after the whole family. These chores limited them to attain a sustainable income, leading to a lack of financial security. The lack of security was also amplified by a lack of training in how to give good care. According to WHO, counselling must be offered to patients infected with HIV/AIDS. However, the result in this study shows the importance of including next of kin in the counselling criteria, as they are in need of advice and education in how to give care. Care providers’ commitment to the patients was particularly visible in the lives of women, who chose to put their own future plans aside for the sake of their sick close ones. As limited resources made it difficult to provide good care, more research needs to be done about the need of sustainable support to care providers in Tanzania.

Résumé :
This research will explore the relevance of the human being as an element in an information system. The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence technology, especially information technology, has had on the way human beings understand and use information systems. This study will look at the use of forward air controllers and close air support in the European Theater of Operations during WWII and evaluate the technology, the doctrine and the people involved as they related to the forward air control-close air support information system. Other areas that will be discussed as they relate to the development of close air support include: incremental vs. radical change, organizational culture and change, and the dynamic nature of current and future operations as they relate to information systems. The primary research objective is to explore the answer to the following question: Based on the role of forward air controller in the European Theater of Operations during World War Two, what is the significance of the human being as an element in an information system? Secondary questions include: What are the necessary elements that make up an information system? How and where were forward air controllers used and were they effective? What were the information systems used by the forward air controllers and were they effective? Last, what implications do the findings of this research have for current technologies, organizational structure and the interaction between human beings and information systems in U.S. military operations?

Guenole, Nigel Raymond. « A Close Look at the Nomology of Support for National Smoking Bans amongst Hospitality Industry Managers : An application of Growth Mixture Modeling ». Thesis, University of Canterbury. Psychology, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/1498.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Politicians and social marketers considering whether, and how, to implement a national smoking ban in their countries require sound evidence regarding what the causes of support are amongst key stakeholders, how this support will develop over the short to medium term in which they seek to be re-elected, and how support relates to critical outcomes like enforcement. In response to this need, I use structural equation models to develop a model of the antecedents of support, based on theories of self interest and common sense justice, amongst hospitality industry managers. I show that support is determined more by fairness related constructs than self interest constructs, that support for national smoking bans increases consistently over time, and that the initial level of support, and the rate at which support increases, is positively related to subsequent enforcement behaviour by bar managers, in the year after implementation of such a ban, in New Zealand. I use growth mixture modeling to identify two subgroups of bar managers whose support changes at different rates. First, a class of bar managers with a high proportion of smokers who reported fewer instances of respiratory related health problems, showed low initial support, and whose support for the legislation slowly decreased. And second, a class of bar managers comprised of fewer smokers, but reporting more instances of respiratory related health problems. This class began with a high degree support, and steadily increased in support for the national smoking ban. I discuss the implications of these findings for social marketers, health educationalists, and politicians interested in introducing a similar ban in other countries.

Résumé :
Eagles Overhead provides a critical history of US Air Force Forward Air Controllers and examines their role, status, and performance in the Air Force's history. It begins by examining the US's initial adoption of air power, and American participation in aerial combat during World War I and traces the FACs' contributions to every US Air Force air campaign from the Marne in 1918 to Mosul in 2017. However, since 2001 FACs' contributions have been sporadic. Eagles Overhead asks why, despite the critical importance of FACs, have they not been heavily used on US battlefields since 2001? It examines the Air Force FAC's theoretical, doctrinal, institutional, and historical frameworks in the first nine chapters to assess if the nature of air warfare has changed so significantly that the concept and utility of the FAC has been left behind. Or, has the FAC been neglected since 2001 because the Air Force dislikes the capability as it clouds the service's doctrinal preferences? From these examinations, Eagles Overhead draws conclusions about the potential future of Air Force FACs.

Résumé :
Attachment theory suggests that children develop internalized expectations of primary care givers that predict the availability of care and protection offered by parents (Bowlby, 1969; 1973; 1980). Parenting practice has been found to significantly impact on the development of internalised attachment schemas (Nickell, et al., 2002). Both one’s attachment and conception of gender-role orientation, which define appropriate gender-based behaviour, have been found to correlate (Shaver, et al., 1996). Furthermore access to emotional support has been found to correlate with attachment (Fairchild & Finney, 2006) and genderrole orientation (Houle, et al., 2008). This study used data from a random community sample to explore the impact of recalled parenting experiences on attachment in romantic relationships, gender-role values and the development of emotional support networks. The randomised sample was also used to develop community norms for the Experiences in Close Relationships Questionnaire Revised (ECR-R; Fraley, Waller & Brennan, 2000). Results indicated the importance of paternal indifference and maternal over control in female attachment to romantic partners. Mental health symptoms differed depending on parenting practice experienced and the gender of the participant. Both romantic attachment and gender role orientation impacted on the nature and propensity to access emotional support. Finally, results supported the psychometric properties of the ECR-R.

In the beginning of the 21st century, Sweden started to develop the capability to perform CAS insupport to ground troops. It has been clarified that CAS performed in the present Afghanistanconflict sometimes has been accused of not coinciding with international law. The purpose of thisthesis is to examine what measures the contemporary research advocate regarding the use of CASso it will be performed in the highest possible quality regarding target acquisition and target hit,and by that what the Swedish Air Force possibly could do in order to minimize the risk ofviolating international law when implementing CAS in international Peace Support Operations. The research is formed around three main questions. First, what international laws are applicableto Swedish units during an international operation? Second, what actions might be taken in orderto reduce the risk for unintended damage to civilians or civilian infrastructure when conductingCAS and finally what measures should the Swedish air force take to minimize the risk to violatethe international law while conducting CAS in peace support/peace keeping operations. The result of this research shows that the Swedish Air Force, in order to operate within theframework of international law, needs to conduct training in a similar and realistic environmentwith live ammunition. The training needs to be entailing a moral and ethical view from ahumanistic perspective. Furthermore, regarding the effect, there need to be weapons with bothnon-lethal to lethal effects with high precision. Finally, the communication between the pilots andthe Forward Air Controller (FAC) needs to be built upon technical equipment with high standard.

The development in the field of UAVs is extensive and gaining in focus andinterest as their mission catalogue is widened. The recent use of weaponizedUAVs in Afghansistan and Iraq to combat an array of targets has shown theirpotential. At the same time there is an ongoing development of offensivesystemes known as UCAVs, designed to strike targets all throughout thebattlespace.Land operations demands systems which allow tempo, flexibility and the useof combined effects to achieve the maximum possible dislocation of theopponent. The author arrives at preconditions for such systems to partakeeffectively by outlining land operations and describing the conduct of closesupport of land formations. Today, the air to ground support part of it iscontrolled by a forward air controller who controls manned platforms andtheir weapon systems. This thesis also describes UCAV systems and theircomponents with focus on authonomy, sensors, communications and weaponsystems.By connecting the conduct of landoperations, close support in general andclose air support (CAS) especially with the description of UCAV systems, thepurpose of the thesis is to outline how CAS to land operations can beconducted with UCAVs. The thesis does this by answering the questions as tohow to control CAS with UCAV and which demands that must be met by theUCAV system.

Facing a transformation of the armed forces both individual units and the organization will be confrontedwith new tasks and challenges. For the air force this could cause some problems due to the fact that it oftentakes some time from decision to implementation of new weapons and technical systems. This is not thecase with political objectives; they can change from one defense decision to another. When the politicalaim and direction regarding the air force capacity for global operations now also includes the ability tosupport the Nordic Battle Group, do the air force and the JAS 39C have the right means to carry out CloseAir Support in modern international conflicts? The purpose of this essay is to analyze if JAS 39C with its weapon-, sensor-, and communication systemscomply with the modern demands on a fighter aircraft carrying out Close Air Support in international operations. With the support of an analytical framework containing theories, doctrines and modern experiencesboth the requirements that lay the foundation for an effective accomplishment of Close Air Supportand a specific analytical instrument has been identified. The analytical instrument was thereafter used toanalyze JAS 39C and its ability to carry out Close Air Support. The results of the analysis show that JAS 39C, technically and materially, in all likelihood will be able tocarry out Close air support as early as 2008. Its strength being the ability to carry out precision engagementstogether with a high responsiveness and its weakness consisting in the lack of all-weather capacity. The results furthermore indicates that the foundation for an effective accomplishment of Close Air Supportcan be found within both moral related pre-conditions as well as conceptual or purely physical preconditions.A solution only focused on fulfilling physical pre-conditions may therefore risk that the combinedeffect and the effectiveness of a future Close Air Support mission will not reach the desired level.

Résumé :
Violence in close relationships is a big society problem both in Sweden and around the world. Most of the violence happens in the home, which results in that the violence remains a hidden problem. The purpose with this study was to increase knowledge of women's experiences of relationship violence and to see if there is a relation, between societies support and the desire to return to a destructive relationship. The study has had its starting point in a qualitative research method, where the collected empirical evidence was carried out through six qualitative interviews, to get closer to women's experiences of violence in close relationships. The collected empirical evidence was analyzed based on the sociological theoretics Cooley, Goffman, Connell and Homans. Earlier research shows that crime in close relationships is a society problem that has to be more enlightened to reduce vulnerability. Furthermore, you can see that women do not feel prioritized by the Justice system, which is one of the factors why they choose to go back to the relationship. The result shows that violence in close relationships occurs in all different ages, social classes and ethnicities. The violence can be both sexual, economical, material and physical where the perpetrator gradually is trying to take control over women's lives. The result shows that these specified women have a habit to return to relationships that involves domestic violence. They fall back into a relationship constituted by physical, psychological and finical violence. The research also proves that certain factors such as kids, lack of support, finical difficulties such as debts, guilt and shameful emotions holds a crucial role in the women’s decision-making process.

Résumé :
A dynamic, thermal model of a Selfsustaining Closed Environment Life Support System (SCELSS), a closed system designed to extend the range of human habitat to extreme climatic zones on Earth and Near Space, is developed and used to simulate the thermal behaviour of a SCELSS located on the surface of the Earth. The resulting heat loads on the air conditioning unit for a given control strategy and two different SCELSS configurations are studied. The SCELSS is represented by thermal models of the biome, the physical structure encompassing the cover, air and vegetation, the ground, and an optional body of water, and by the model of an air handling unit, encompassing a fan, coils and a control to track prescribed biome air temperature and relative humidity set points. A modular approach is used in developing the model to allow for future expansion to include biological aspects in the representation of the SCELSS. The structure of the models in conformed to the formalism of the computer simulation program TRNSYS. A test for isothermality is used to verify the mathematical and thermodynamic behaviour of the model. Simulations with the model show that a large fraction of the solar input is converted into moisture transferred to the biome air, which has to be dehumidified in the air conditioning unit coils to maintain livable conditions inside, making substantial reheat of the air necessary. The inclusion of a pond in the SCELSS configuration proves to modify the normal path of heat through the biome substantially, reducing peak and total air conditioning loads.

Mechanical Engineering
Ph.D.
The ability to fabricate structures and engineer materials on the nanoscale leads to the development of new devices and the study of exciting phenomena. Nanostructures attached to the surface of a substrate, in a manner that renders them immobile, have numerous potential applications in a diverse number of areas. Substrate-supported nanostructures can be fabricated using numerous modalities; however the easiest and most inexpensive technique to create a large area of randomly distributed particles is by the technique of thermal dewetting. In this process a metastable thin film is deposited at room temperature and heated, causing the film to lower its surface energy by agglomerating into droplet-like nanostructures. The main drawbacks of nanostructure fabrication via this technique are the substantial size distributions realized and the lack of control over nanostructure placement. In this doctoral dissertation, a new pathway for imposing order onto the thermal dewetting process and for manipulating the size, placement, shape and composition of preformed templates is described. It sees the confinement of substrate-supported thin films or nanostructure templates by the free surface of a metal film or a second substrate surface. Confining the templates in this manner and heating them to elevated temperatures leads to changes in the characteristics of the nanostructures formed. Three different modalities are demonstrated which alters the preformed structures by: (i) subtracting atoms from the templates, (ii) adding atoms to the template or (iii) simultaneously adding and subtracting atoms. The ability to carry out such processes depends on the choice of the confining surface and the nanostructured templates used. A subtractive process occurs when an electroformed nickel mesh is placed in conformal contact with a continuous gold film while it dewets, resulting in the formation of a periodic array of gold microstructures on an oxide substrate surface. When heated the gold beneath the grid selectively attaches to it due to the surface energy gradient which drives gold from the low surface energy oxide surface to the higher surface energy nickel mesh. With this process being confined to areas adjacent to and in contact with the grid surface the film ruptures at well-defined locations to form isolated islands of gold and subsequently, a periodic array of microstructures. The process can be carried out on substrates of different crystallographic orientations leading to nanostructures which are formed epitaxially and have orientations based on underlying substrate orientations. The process can be extended by placing a metallic foil of Pt or Ni over preformed templates, in which case a reduction in the size of the initial structures is observed. Placing a foil on structures with random placement and a wide size distribution results, not only in a size reduction, but also a narrowed size distribution. Additive processes are carried out by using materials which possess high vapor pressures much below the sublimation temperature of the template materials. In this case a germanium substrate was used as a source of germanium adatoms while gold or silver nanostructures were used as heterogeneous nucleation sites. At elevated temperatures the adatoms collect in sufficient quantities to transform each site into a liquid alloy which, upon cooling, phase separates into elemental components sharing a common interface and, hence, resulting in the formation of heterodimers and hollowed metal nanocrescents upon etching away the Ge. A process which combined aspects of the additive and subtractive process was carried out by using a metallic foil with a high vapor pressure and higher surface energy than the substrate surface (in this case Pd foil). This process resulted in the initial preformed gold templates being annihilated and replaced by nanostructures of palladium, thereby altering their chemical composition. The assembly process relies on the concurrent sublimation of palladium and gold which results in the complete transfer of the templated gold from the substrate to the foil, but not before the templates act as heterogeneous nucleation sites for palladium adatoms arriving to the substrate surface. Thus, the process is not only subtractive, but also additive due to the addition of palladium and removal of gold.

Résumé :
This dissertation introduces a new problem in the delivery of healthcare, which could result in lower cost and a higher quality of medical care as compared to the current healthcare practice. In particular, a framework is developed for sedation and cardiopulmonary management for patients in the intensive care unit. A method is introduced to automatically detect pain and agitation in nonverbal patients, specifically in sedated patients in the intensive care unit, using their facial expressions. Furthermore, deterministic as well as probabilistic expert systems are developed to suggest the appropriate drug dose based on patient sedation level. This framework can be used to automatically control the level of sedation in the intensive care unit patients via a closed-loop control system. Specifically, video and other physiological variables of a patient can be constantly monitored by a computer and used as a feedback signal in a closed-loop control architecture. In addition, the expert system selects the appropriate drug dose based on the patient's sedation level. In clinical intensive care unit practice sedative/analgesic agents are titrated to achieve a specific level of sedation. The level of sedation is currently based on clinical scoring systems. In general, the goal of the clinician is to find the drug dose that maintains the patient at a sedation score corresponding to a moderately sedated state. This is typically done empirically, administering a drug dose that usually is in the effective range for most patients, observing the patient's response, and then adjusting the dose accordingly. However, the response of patients to any drug dose is a reflection of the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of the drug and the specific patient. In this research, we use pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic modeling to find an optimal drug dosing control policy to drive the patient to a desired sedation score.

Most infectious diseases are contracted in indoor environments. The time spent and the confinement in these spaces fosters the emergence and transmission of certain respiratory viruses. Various studies have shown a link between the presence of viruses on surfaces and infections. The role of the environment on the survival of the virus, particularly the relative share of fomites, although briefly mentioned, remains unknown. This research aims to evaluate the propensity of media to inhibit the transmission of viruses. In this context, the aim of this work is to study the role of building materials and products. The originality of this thesis lies in the development of methodologies to reproduce contaminating surface contamination by oropharyngeal emission, using a saliva substitute associated with two modes of surface contamination: airborne contamination and droplets deposition. Monitoring of contamination is provided by two quantitative approaches. One based on the RNA of the viral particles and the other on the infectivity of viral particles. The results show that the virus is able to retain some of its infectivity after an artificial aerosolization. They also highlight the ability of certain materials, such as copper and the linoleum to affect the viral genome according to the mode of contamination. However, some materials can preserve infectivity for at least 24 hours
