Résumé :
This study explored the use of staff in a sample of institutions specifically designed to be innovative - City Technology Colleges (CTCs). The research focused on theories of educational change developed by Gross, Giacquinta and Bernstein (1971) and Fullan (1991) in order to evaluate the benefits, problems and cost-effectiveness of innovative associate (non-teaching) staff posts. Eight CTCs, providing a geographical spread and a variety of innovative posts, were selected. In each, four posts (15 women and 17 men) were chosen for detailed study. The posts covered: • support for management and administration (10) • support for the curriculum (13) • support for both management and curriculum (9). Two hundred and two semi-structured interviews were conducted with governors, senior and linemanagers, teachers and postholders during two phases of fieldwork undertaken between autumn 1993 and summer 1995. The freedom of CTCs provided scope for the opportunistic use of postholders' skills. The majority of posts were judged to be cost-effective. The benefits of the innovative posts included improved opportunities for students and staff to gain from associate staff expertise; managers and teachers, respectively, having more time for planning and pedagogy; and more cost-effective use of resources. Problems were related to teachers' resistance, lack of clarity in the posts and excessive responsibilities being given to postholders. Gross et al's and Fullan's theories were congruent with the fmding of the study but neither theory was sufficient to explain the success or failure of innovation in these CTCs. The concept of culture - both positive aspects (which enabled staff, including those who were not teachers, to feel part of a new innovative venture) and negative aspects (teaching or industrial sub-cultures preventing the innovations from taking root) - emerged as a useful explanatory concept. The study concluded with implications for policy, practice and further research. Gross, N, Giacquinta, J. and Bernstein, M. (1971) Implementing Organizational Innovations, New York: Basic Books. Résumé :
Top executives are interested in more transparent and formalized structures, applicable measurements, and clear justification of alignment. Limited or improper information technology governance (ITG) affects the business strategy that will ultimately influence the overall business alignment in local city government agencies (LCGAs). The problem addressed in this study was the lack of information regarding LCGAs IT/business strategic alignment maturity model (SAMM) level and the LCGAs' employment size. The purpose of this survey study was to evaluate 48 LCGA participants in the Southwestern part of the United States and compare their alignment perceptions with their cities' employment size. The theoretical framework for this study was based on ITG and business strategy as measured by the SAMM instrument. An online survey was used for data collection and data results were analyzed using descriptive statistics and an Analysis of Variance. After using the SAMM instrument, the current snapshot maturity level of LCGAs was 2.49 out of a maximum 5.0 level. Results illustrated no significant relationship between LCGAs alignment maturity levels and a city's size. This study empowers positive social change by providing LCGAs 6 incremental steps to improve the overall alignment maturity level in areas of transparent and formalized structures, applicable measurements, and improved alignment measures.

Starting from the idea of city as an amplified field for communication and art, this theoretical-pratical research aims to investigate artistic experimentations that involve the handling of new technologies, mobile devices and locative medias, establishing a direct relation with Fortaleza city. Based on a route passed through observation, participation, construction of relations and experience exchanges, it was made an analysis from the work of three artists that operate in Ceara's capital: David da Paz, CecÃlia Andrade and Andrà Lopes. The approximation and diversity of these artistic proposals bring matters like assemblage of collaborative practises; dialogues between geo localized video performances and nomad poetics; erasures and dispute of urban imaginary; notions of public, private and virtual social medias on daily environments; neighbourhood, proximity and surroundings connected to the use of ordinary technologies; contributing to the construction of a thought that presents possible configuration dynamics of contemporary cybercities. Based upon notions of sitespecific and De Certeau's view about ways to invent and practise the daily life, critical outcomes are build from a social space connected by creative ways of being a part of a city tensioned by informative flow and intense political-economic-social transformation process.

Corbett, David. « Exploring the potential of technology in enabling the inclusive co-production of space ». Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/22727.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The potential of emerging technology to address poly-urban issues is a growing focus on the agendas of cities worldwide. However, there is a lack of consensus regarding how and in whose interests it should be applied - should the aim be to establish 'smart cities' or to encourage 'smart citizens'? The 'bottom-up' approach advocates the latter and recognises the potential of technology to facilitate the prioritisation of issues and co-production of spaces. Particularly in a developing context where resources are severely limited, the ability to prioritise interventions to have maximum impact is exciting. However, these projects and the processes which enable them are under-researched. In this dissertation, a combination of Network Action Research and case study methods are used to guide the application of a selection of digital tools in combination with semi-structured and indepth interviews, surveys, and focus groups to a specific context. The products of this are insights regarding the processes which enable inclusive bottom-up smart city projects; the application of the Network Action Research method; and a context-specific resource of information to guide the future prioritisation of projects and planning in the study area. This dissertation explores the value of inclusive participation in planning, and the role that technology can play in facilitating this. However, it also uncovers the complex and non-linear nature of these projects, ultimately arguing that although technology is a valuable resource, it is not a catch-all. A hybridised approach to bottom-up smart city projects is crucial to their success.

Résumé :
This study deals with finding a way to enable citizen-led urban innovation through technology while concentrating on various aspects of controversial city developments. Therefore the literature concerning this topic is first investigated and current online systems designed for citizens to engage in city development decisions explored. In addition, literature, approaches and systems related to conflict resolution are also presented and discussed. By means of applying multiple design cycles, including several user studies, an online platform for citizens to elaborate controversial ideas for the city together was developed. These design cycles were focused on first finding a suitable process to elaborate on ideas and find consent. The process implementing this is tested during two workshops that portray the procedure that would be realised on the platform. Findings after each workshop are used to revise the process. In order to design a user interface that could implement such a process first an expert focus group was asked to brainstorm solutions for multiple design questions. Considering this input two platform mock-ups were created and shown to participants to receive feedback. A final prototype of the online platform was then implemented and tested in a final user study. During this study participants elaborated an idea together to test the whole resulting product, while being able to use the online platform in an in the wild setting. In spite of discovering how dependent the usage of the platform is on its users, the feedback received for the general idea of using an online platform to elaborate on ideas and find consent was overall positive.

Résumé :
Abstract3D printing (3DP) is considered as a promising technology in construction industry due to a number of advantages that among others include fast and accurate construction, as well as elimination of formworks and material waste. Although 3DP technology is at an early stage of adoption in construction industry, its positive contribution towards a more sustainable construction approach is well acknowledged. Nevertheless, various constraints prevent its further establishment that include among others lack of knowledge among construction actors, premature investigation regarding techniques and material properties, as well as limited work on design optimization, cost, and environmental impact performance analysis. This chapter aims to contribute towards this direction by analysing the 3DP cost and environmental impact of a number of brick units, forming walls with different geometrical complexity. Results show that while walls’ complexity is increased, there are no significant changes in cost, global warming and primary energy consumption. In contrast, through the application of traditional construction processes, the result values would have been increased proportionally to the degree of complexity. This proves the potential of applying the 3DP technique to the construction of any structure at no extra cost and without increasing the environmental impact. Also, it provides an indication of its potential to be included within a regenerative construction framework.

Résumé :
Information and communication technology is fundamentally changing the way we live and operate in cities, such as instant access to events, transportation, bookings, payments, and other services. At the same time, three “megatrends” in the automotive industry—self-driving, electrification, and advanced manufacturing technology—are enabling the design of innovative, application-specific vehicles that capitalize on city connectivity. Applications could countless; however, they also need to be safe and securely integrated into a city’s physical and digital infrastructure, and into the overall urban ecosystem. Unsettled Issues Concerning Automated Driving Services in the Smart City Infrastructure examines the current state of the industry, the developments in automated driving and robotics, and how these new urban, self-driving city applications are different. It also analyzes higher level challenges for urban applications. Ultimately, this report includes several options for sharing lessons learned among different cities and their stakeholders.
