Résumé :
In this article, I discuss the relationships between ethnicity and religion, based on anthropological studies of religions in the urban context. I also discuss the transformations of these studies since the 1970s. Since I have myself contributed to this field of studies, my own experience as a researcher must be taken into account. I focus on the uses of the categories of ethnicity and religion during two distinct periods in the history of Brazilian anthropology. In each of these periods, I point out significant transformations in the way Brazilian researchers describe themselves and how they conceive the relationship between their research topics and the city.

<em><span>Freedom of religion in Indonesia is a right that must be owned by the Indonesian nation. Apart from the six recognized religions in Indonesia, the Sikh religion is one of them. The Punjabi people who follow the Sikh religion are part of the ethnic diversity found in Indonesia, especially in the city of Medan. Although the Sikh religion is not an official religion, it is still accepted and growing in Indonesia, especially in the city of Medan, North Sumatra. In the development of religious studies, the Sikh religion is included in the top ten religions in the world. However, the importance of this study is studied, seeing that its development is still able to maintain its existence among the Muslim minority. This type of research is field research using a religious history approach, trying to see the process of development that occurred in the Sikh religion. The results of these findings show that the spread of the Sikh religion in Indonesia can be said to be growing with an increasing number of adherents. evidenced by several buildings of houses of worship for the Sikh religion, namely Gurdwara Shree at several points in Medan City including, Gurdwara Perbhandak on Jalan Teuku Umar, Gurdwara Shree Guru Tegh Bahadur area on Jalan Polonia and Gurdwara Shree Guru Nanak Dev Ji on Jalan Karya Murni. Factors causing the Sikh religion to continue to grow are because the Sikh religion does not recognize caste which results in social inequality for its adherents. Moreover, the Sikh religion is able to live side by side in the midst of the majority.</span></em>

This study describes the conflict over the conflict over the holy land of three divine religions in Jerusalem during the Israeli period, namely, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, as the religion with the largest adherents on earth. The choice of this theme is considered important because of the dynamics of the struggle for territory that has civilizations that are connected to each other between the three divine religions, with the Prophet Ibrahim AS as the father of the prophets as well as the ancestor of their religion. The researchers took two theories that were used, among others, social action theory from Max Weber, and social conflict theory from Dahdrendorf. Yerusalem It has an important history for these three heavenly religions, presenting a sense of wanting to control and claim the holy city of Jerusalem as a city that belongs only to one religion. A re-reading of the history of Jerusalem has shown the historical spectrum of the social life of the three divine religions in Jerusalem. Résumé :
Modern megacities are becoming spaces where religious processes unfold most actively. And this poses the problem of studying the functioning of religion in urban space. Cities always were religious centers, religion defined social behavior, but the specificity of the urban way of life left its mark on religion and influenced religious evolution. This article attempts to explore the interaction of religion and the urban environment in its wide historical context. The conditions for the existence of a historical religion (Christianity) in a medieval European city contributed to the transition of religion to a new stage of historical evolution - to the emergence of an “early modern religion” (Protestantism), which led to a radical disenchantment of the social world and the concentration of religiosity in the human inner world. A new type of religiosity, embodied in Protestantism, has become one of the factors contributing to the modernization process.

Résumé :
Abstract Initially, the article concentrates on a major change in ancient Mediterranean religions that can be understood as an “intellectualization of religion.” Focusing on the text-based practices of early Christian religious specialists, it looks at this phenomenon as a facet of an urban religion rather than an inherent quality of early Christ religion. The article goes on to address heterarchy, i.e., the tendency toward a nonhierarchical arrangement of power, as a further element that characterizes city life as well as relations among cities. Not linearly ranked and topographically fractionated, the first urban Christ groups also constituted heterarchical formations shaped by the assorted types of power coalescing in urban environments. Zooming in on the imperial city of Carthage in the mid-3rd century, the article then analyzes the intersection of the two phenomena. It demonstrates the effects that the enforcement of a textually designed and conceptually sophisticated project of Church order produced on the Christ networks by arguing that, in urban contexts characterized by a host of powers, authority claims, and forms of capital, Cyprian’s intellectualized religion contributed to breaking apart existing coalescences of people united by religion.

Résumé :
The article is devoted to the system classifi cation of religions on the basis of various criteria, the most important of which is the communication one. As the cross-cultural method shows, there is no word «religion» in many languages o f the world, but there is its equivalent, denoting the connection of man with God and supernatural forces. The system classifi cation of religions is more a system of classifi cations than a classifi cation, which based on ideal, hypothetical models. It based on the object of worship (the religion of Nature, the religion of Tradition, the religion of Revelation), on the sources of the doctrine (the religion of the scriptures), on the methods of obtaining information, or, in the religious paradigm, religious knowledge /hidden truths (prophetic, non-prophetic, etc.). The author tries to fi nd conjugations between these classifi cations. The system-communication method is one of many possible ways of scientifi c knowledge of religion, which allows us to divide complex social essences and phenomena into composite elements, and each of them in their close interconnection and interaction with other elements of systematic knowledge, taking into account the specifi city of religious communication.

Jon Butler's God in Gotham: The Miracle of Religion in Modern Manhattan affirms what historians of religion have long known and some urban historians have begun to discover—that few things in American history have survived so well as religion. Political moments and social movements have come and gone. Fashions have fallen out of favor; fads have faded. But that thing that we call “religion”—however defined, theologically, experientially, or institutionally—has survived, even thrived, particularly in American cities and perhaps most particularly in America's largest city, New York.

Résumé :
Background: Interfaith marriages occur in Indonesia, one of which is in the city of Surabaya. Once the marriage is valid, it must be reported to the Civil Registry Occupation Service and issue an Ottentic Deed. Authentic Deeds that are considered official must comply with the provisions of Article 1868 of the Civil Code. What is meant by official in this article is a notary. This is regulated in Article 1 Article 15 paragraph 1 of UUJN. The Notary Department plays an important role in the ratification of Marriage Certificates both of the same religion and different religions in Indonesia. Aim: The author's purpose in creating this journal is to find out how interfaith marriage relations in Indonesia with the civil law of interfaith marriage and the hierarchy of laws and regulations related to interfaith marriage. Method: The research method that researchers use is juridical normative with qualitative research. Findings: The result of this study is that the Interfaith Marriage Agreement in Indonesia based on Law No. Article 16 of 2019 concerning Marriage clarifies the role of religion in marriage and the confirmation of faith, stating that a valid marriage is a marriage carried out according to the laws of each religion and its adherents. The state leaves the assessment of the validity of marriage to the religion and beliefs of the people concerned. Thus, Law Number 16 of 2019 concerning Marriage is a standard that regulates not prohibits. The state does not prohibit individuals from interfaith marriages.

Résumé :
Starting from a discussion against the notions of a unified ‘public religion’ my focus during the past decade has been on ‘religious individualization’ and the fluidity of religion captured by the concepts of ‘lived ancient religion’ and ‘religion in the making’. These concepts focus on the inherent dynamic qualities of those cultural products that I identify as religion in the course of historical analyses. And yet, the undeniable presence of traditions and even canones can be conceptualized beyond a world of individually fragmented religious practices and beliefs and incipient, ever-changing and also dissolving institutions that would be clustered together only in the form of narrative shorthand terms by historians. The paper offers a theoretical reflection on a concept of religion useful for the question of tradition and canonization, building on earlier proposals and developing those further by developing the notion of sacralisation. This will be framed by an historical assumption, namely that the processes of interest here are pushed in urban contexts. Here, my focus will be on the ancient Mediterranean.

Résumé :
AbstractIn 1650, an encyclopedia of comparative religion known as Dabistān-i Maẕāhib (the School of Doctrines) was completed near the city of Hyderabad. Asserting that the religions of the world are reflections of a single inner truth, its author Mīrzā Ẕu'l-fiqār Āẕarsāsānī, known by the poetic penname ‘Mūbad’, travelled widely across India to record encounters with diverse religious figures. This article re-examines the composition and legacy of the Dabistān in light of new manuscript evidence relating to its author and the world he inhabited. It argues that the Dabistān's universalist project reflects a widely held theory of the interrelatedness of the macrocosm, in which sociality with diverse populations was understood to be a spiritual exercise leading to saintly perfection in the same way that venerating the cosmos and ascetic bodily practices were. The article provides a close reading of the Dabistān's shortest chapter on the religion of the Tibetans, the earliest such description in Persian. Situating the Dabistān within the diverse expressions of ‘Universal Peace’ (ṣulḥ-i kull) during the Safavid and Mughal periods, it argues that the Dabistān's project of recovering a universal theology that was attributed to ancient Iran and India led to expressions of dual religious belonging—to particular religions of revelation as well as to the universal religion of the philosophers—parallel to and connected with what Jan Assmann has termed the ‘religio duplex phenomenon’ in early modern Europe. Finally, the article briefly traces the legacy of the Dabistān into the modern period. The free do not think of religion, doctrine, and spiritual guidance—Those shackled by seeking liberation are not truly free. For how long must we wander the alleyways of religion and nation?—There is no highway through the land of verification (taḥqīq) besides heresy (ilḥād).—‘Mūbad’ Mīrzā Ẕu'l-fiqār Āẕarsāsānī (fl. 1060s ah/1650s ce)1

And heavy influenced at the religion structure of the city. Steven D. Smith’s Pagans and Christians in the City is an important and unique contribution to the vast literature on the American culture war. Smith’s distinction between immanent and transcendent religion refines and deepens James Davidson Hunter’s famous analysis of this conflict. As illuminating as this volume is, however, it fails to fully appreciate the religious dimension of the American founding. Specifically, Smith does not acknowledge or account for the covenantal nature of the American founding, and thus does not recognize the full degree to which the American experiment was informed by the transcendent religions of the Western world, namely, Judaism and Christianity.

Abstract Shakespeare's King Lear offers later writers a scaffolding on which to construct do-it-yourself religions that emerge when intentional and unintentional pilgrims venture, abdicate, or are expelled from existing institutional orders and discover the covenantal core of religion when they encounter Other dispossessed people. Shakespeare's play, in dialogue with the Book of Job, develops the idea of a suffering God that is latent in the Hebrew Bible. When students at the University of Michigan-Flint adapted the play to their contemporary environment, they began their own pilgrimages into a wounded city and family traumas. Without biblical literacy, they instinctively reached for John Keats’ Lear-inspired ‘Vale of Suffering’ letter and the Bible-belt inflected stories of Flannery O'Connor to reassemble Lear as a religious play for today.

Résumé :
Abstract Is Harvey Cox’s Fire from Heaven which focused on Pentecostalism merely a mea culpa for the hubris of predicting the death of God in the 1960s or a case of using the “pentecostalization” of religions to describe the shape of religiosity in the emerging global civil society, global secular city? This essay shows how theologically liberal ideas in both his Fire from Heaven and Secular City are today used to theologize the relevant shape of faith in the global civil society in ways that hauntingly suggest Pentecostalism is implicated in the emergence and working of the global secular city which reject notions of transcendence in religion. The essay then challenges pentecostal theologians to seriously consider the question: In what way is Pentecostalism already secularized or secularizing from its core?

Scholars who have written about the city of Petra have concentrated on the history and archaeology of the city. And, while some of them have written about Nabataean religion, only few of them mentioned information about the holiness of the city; specifically, if it was worshiped as a deity. The aim of this study is to fulfil a gap in Nabataean religion in general and, in particular, re-examine the status of Petra in their religion. In addition to the archaeological evidence, such as buildings, art, and features, the study is based on written resources, such as historical sources and Nabataean inscriptions found in Petra and other cities.

Résumé :
The power of science is dazzling: to create and clone life in the laboratory, to send words and pictures thousands of miles away by the touch of a button, etc. Today we live in a world of spaceship, of satellite, of computer and the test tube. Advances in genetic engineering have given us the power to intervene in the structure of DNA, the stuff of life itself. So in a way we are Godlike in our achievements, with the power to create and to destroy. However, it has become necessary to temper the scientific progress by the moral imperative, and to add Divine wisdom to human knowledge. To exclude God from human calculations, and to rely solely on human power, without seeking to do the will of our creator, is to build a Tower of Babel, which in itself is a symbol of self-destructive human arrogance. Therefore, religion must be seen to be very relevant and vital in our age and time, for it testifies to the spiritual values of truth, justice, love and peace, which alone can form a sound basis for lasting human fulfilment.

The paper argues the thesis that the modern city rises in Genesis and that urban development intertwines (a) with changes to religious concepts from spiritual religion to rational religion, and (b) with changes to economic concepts from behavioural socio-economics to non-behavioural institutional economics. The conclusion arrived at is that the modern city and religious pluralism do manifest themselves, exemplarily so in the final stories of Genesis. Then, ideas on rational religion and institutional economic governance become much more visible. Through textual, narratological analysis, the paper contributes to an institutional economic theory of ancient polity, religious text and of Old Testament-based religion.

Despite predictions of decline, religion has featured prominently in the public sphere and the media since the events of 11 September 2001. Previous research on media and religion in Australia post-September 11 has focused largely on its negative impacts, particularly on Muslim communities. This article, in contrast, examines media representations of religion, spirituality and non-religion on an ‘ordinary day’, of 17 September, over a three-year period in the city of Melbourne. Its findings reveal that religion, in its myriad forms, permeates many aspects of Australian public life, but in ways which do not always reflect the actual religious composition and lived experiences of worldview diversity in Australia.

A Religion of Progress has taken shape over the last 21 centuries, from the Enlightenment to present times. It is quite simple to follow a thread from Hermeticism to today, however, several facts have altered its content, therefore, reformulating some of its promises and vision of the world. This paper attempts to evaluate how that Religion of Progress has become a sort of Techno-Hermeticism 2.0. Digital technologies have redefined old hermetic myths into a high-tech religion with dire environmental consequencies. Some of those myths are the resurrection of the bodies, the construction of the City of God, the Adamic universal language and so forth. Now religion must confront the upcoming collapse, however, it is unable to provide satisfactory answers. This goes for all the different churches, from accelerationists (Nick Land) to extinctionists and believers of digital solutionism. That leaves possible imaginative responses to that sociecological crisis without any relevant proposals.

<em>This study attempts to examine the implementation of religious freedom in a multicultural education institution, namely at SMU Selamat Pagi Indonesia (SMU-SPI )in Batu City, East Java. This study focuses on the meaning of religious freedom for the academic community, and the supporting and hindering factors for the implementation of religious freedom in this school which has diverse multicultural backgrounds. This empirical study uses a qualitative- phenomenological approach. It shows some important findings. First, the meaning of religious freedom for the academic community of this school is the freedom for everyone to practice their religion in accordance with the religion and beliefs of each, while respecting the religion and beliefs of others. Second, the application of freedom of religion in this school is expressed through moral conducts amongst the school community such as compassion, good advice, moral support, religious commitment and respect for other religious observance. In addition, the implementation of religious freedom is also evident in the efforts of the school to provide teachers and spiritual guide to students in accordance to their respective religion and in the establishment of places of worship for all religions.</em>

Religions are recognized as having a great influence on Korean society, although the number of those who have religion has decreased. We tried to extract spatial statistics on the distribution of religious sites using the zoning information of the Korea Land Information System and to interpret their meanings. Nationally, the religious population decreased by 15% in 2015 compared to 2005, while the number of parcels for religions increased by 38% in 2018 compared to 2008. The total areas of parcels for religions increased 42%. In addition, parcels for religions showed a cluster distribution, and the degree of clustering in 2018 increased in comparison with that in 2008 across Korea. We investigated Busan Metropolitan City in detail. In this case, we found very low correlation between the total population and areas of parcels for religion, and that both Kangseo-gu, new-developed area and youngdo-ku, old town showed an increase in a huge cluster. We discussed the meanings of statistical figures and the necessity of qualitative and quantitative research.
