Texte intégralBased on the idea that transmitting language is not only a linguistic act, but a transmission filled with affect, we intend to work on the often complex linguistic course of Tamil children from Sri Lanka. It is in a recent and particular context that most Tamil families have migrated to France. This research concerns children between four and five years old, born in France from parents coming from Sri Lanka. This thesis is part of a research on bilingualism: “A language to another” (which is a Hospital Clinical Research Program) conducted by the multidisciplinary team of the departement of child and adolescent psychopathology of Avicenne Hospital, whereby we were able to assess children in Tamil and French and meet their parents. This research aims at validating a tool which allows assessing the mother tongue and highlighting critical factors to the acquisition of bilingualism. The data in this thesis are collected as part of research on bilingualism. Thus, studying the use of languages and their representations, we found traces of filiation and affiliation in the language of Tamil children. Working on language with the children and their parents, we were able to show that the transmission of mother tongue does not consist only of words and that children are sensitive to what is transmitted beyond the words, through affects and representations. This research aims at better understanding the place of languages in order to provide appropriate care for Tamil children from Sri Lanka having language difficulties

Texte intégralThe study of Tamils in Colombo, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore shows the importance of adopting a multi-scale and comparative perspective in order to fully grasp an understanding of the complexity of the various factors affecting the identification and socio-spatial integration of a transnational minority group. These Tamils evolve in very different national political contexts. In Sri Lanka, they are at the heart of inter-communal conflicts. In Singapore, they are officially recognized as a component of a multicultural society, whilst in Malaysia the government officially favors Malays. The analysis of the policies enforced by the colonial power, followed by the three independent states toward minorities provides a better understanding of their impacts on the sense of identity and integration of Tamils in the Nation, as well as their geographical distribution in these cities. At the local level, the spatial inscription of tamil identity and their urban practices favor an appropriation of their urban environment. However, it is not immutable. Urban policies developed by states, which according to the cases preserve or destroy ethnoterritories, have an impact on the Tamil urban footprint and their practical of the city. This reality is not without consequence on how Tamils perceive their attachement to the nation. Finally, transnational ties (cultural, political, economical) between Tamils and contemporary dynamics of international migration of Tamils in these three countries also have consequences on the identification and integration of those from Colombo, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore

Texte intégralToday, the quest for honor can seemoutdated in Western countries. But for a long timeit has characterizedthe relationships between the Indian decision-makers and the South Asian leaders. Relationships with Sri Lankan protagonists are also shaped by this question of honor but also of glory. Just as the military, political leaders are also influenced by honor and glory which are often produced by a warrior ethos So they want to show their manliness. Virility is not biological but a political and social construct. Throughout the resolution of the Indian-Sri Lankan conflict, numerous clashes took place between between their respective leaders. Decisions, attitudes and actions taken by the Indians have been shaped by their interactions with their Sri Lankan counterparts. And this evolution has also been possible because of “catalyst events”. After the IPKF’s withdrawal and Rajiv Gandhi’s murder,Indian decision-makers refused to recognize the“Tamil Tigers” guerilla (Liberation Tamil Tigers of Eelam, in Sri Lanka. But the Indian Political leaders’ recognition of the Sri Lankan rulersopened the way to a conflict resolution with military means. Twenty-years ago it would have been completely impossible for the Indians to allow the Sri Lankans to have their way.Recognition on both parts have largely improved the Indian and the Sri Lankan interpersonal and interstate relationships
