Résumé :
Scientific research in the area of chateau brownfields is quite new and thus offers room for interesting findings and insights. This text presents the results of a pilot study in search of causality between the causes of the occurrence and spheres of restoration of chateau brownfields in the Moravian-Silesian region in the Czech Republic, where chateau settlements are considered an urban phenomenon of the cultural landscape. Out of a total of 88 chateaux, 40 have received brownfield status over the years, of which 28 are currently regenerated. The main reason why the chateaux were abandoned can be found in the inappropriate economic activities that took place in them, which originated mainly in the directive decision on their functionality at the end of the Second World War. Most of the chateau brownfield sites are still abandoned or currently for sale, and many others have been regenerated for tourism and public sector services. The causality analysed between the causes of their occurrence and their restored function reflects the logical and economic context characteristic of a time of restoration and the general desire of the public sector to reduce the number of brownfield sites in its cadastral area.

Résumé :
Land desertification is a global environmental problem, leading to the deterioration of the ecological environment and is an issue that threatens humans. Hongsibu, located in Ningxia, northwest China, is a semi-desert area with the largest domestic single-site ecological resettlement area for poverty alleviation based on the wine industry. Here, we quantified the value of the ecosystem services of the wine industry in Hongsibu and used the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to quantitatively evaluate the comprehensive benefits of the wine industry for resolving desertification. We found that winegrapes significantly increase vegetation cover, while significantly decreasing blowing sand and generating a total annual value of ecosystem services of 6.13× 108 RMB. The evaluation score of the comprehensive benefits is 81.85%, with grape growers and chateaus obtaining large economic benefits from the wine industry. In conclusion, the wine industry’s development not only enhances the economic level of grape growers but significantly resolves desertification in impoverished areas—thus alleviating poverty and land degradation, contributing to sustainable development. Therefore, this may be an effective strategy for sustainable development in other parts of the world.

McCormick, Frank. « John Vanbrugh's Architecture : Some Sources of His Style ». Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians 46, no 2 (1 juin 1987) : 135–44. http://dx.doi.org/10.2307/990182.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This essay posits three basic sources for the vocabulary of Vanbrugh's mixed style: namely, (1) the interior architecture and scene design of the contemporary theatre, with which Vanbrugh became familiar in his capacity as dramatist and manager of the Queen's Theatre at the Haymarket; (2) the medieval forms of the walled city of Chester in which he spent his youth; and (3) the donjon and courtyards of the Chateau of Vincennes, which Vanbrugh would have come to know during his imprisonment there in 1691. The first two operate as rather general sources of the "theatrical" and the "medieval" elements in Vanbrugh's buildings. In the case of the Chateau of Vincennes the influence is more specific: the arrangement of the Chateau's donjon and courtyards supplied a model for the typical design of Vanbrugh's large-scale buildings in which forward-thrusting wings are attached to a deeply recessed centerblock. David Cast's neo-Hobbesian suggestions for "seeing" Vanbrugh are invoked as a means of making aesthetic sense of Vanbrugh's use of his three sources.

Résumé :
The paper presents the cultural landscape surrounding Roztěž near Kutná Hora. The existence of a designed landscape linked to the person of Franz Anton von Sporck was presumed in the area between the chateau of Roztěž and chapel of St. John Baptist on the Vysoká hill built in 1695–1697. Compared to other landscape designs of Sporck this project is almost unknown, but the name of the landlord offers a clue. This is the reason why this area was selected for testing the Methodology for Identification of Designed Landscapes created at the Department of Landscape Planning of FH MENDELU in 2012. The assessment confirmed the basic compositional relation (Roztěž chateau – chapel of St. John Baptist) and detected conditions of larger spatial relations linked to the chateau. The special part of surveys and analyses used GIS tools that allow for testing the visual links between individual features of the composition and spaces, and to formulate a hypothesis about the actual form of the composition in the landscape. The core of the composition was the chateau of Roztěž, but it was not limited only to the link with the chapel but included the surrounding settlements as well (Malešov, Nová Lhota), and also the extensive pheasantry.

Chateau de Balleroy located in the Calvados region of Normandy, France played an important role in the career of François Mansart, popularizer of the “Mansard” roof. Historic architectural features, subsurface archaeological features, and graffiti were documented using drones and multispectral imagery. The analysis of these data enhances our understanding of how the people of Balleroy marked and modified the Chateau and its associated landscape at multiple sociospatial scales over the last four centuries.

Résumé :
Adoniram Judson, whose 1840 translation of the Bible is still the most widely used version in modern-day Myanmar, rejected James Chater’s 1812 translation of Matthew into Burmese. Comparing Chater’s work with Judson’s first attempt at translating Scripture, which was also the Gospel of Matthew, in 1817, reveals five main issues: (1) Judson’s translation is generally better executed than Chater’s; (2) the two translations are mostly different; (3) there are some places where it appears Judson was following Chater’s translation; (4) occasionally Chater provides a better translation than Judson; and (5) Judson uses more “polite” honorific and religious language than Chater. Judson’s work demonstrates more sophisticated exegesis and translation technique. Two factors contribute to this, the first being Judson’s superior education. The second is that Chater’s work stands in the Serampore/William Carey tradition of Bible translation and shares the weaknesses that have been identified in that approach.

While not strictly philosophical, this article is an excellent exercise in the kind of scrupulous detective work rarely done by those who spread such myths. It also nicely illustrates how such myths are often started.

The center of the study is an outline of the cultural image of the chateau residences in Slezské Rudoltice, Velké Hoštice and Jánský Vrch. Attention is paid not only to the cultural activities of Albert Josef Hodice, Dominik Skrbenský and Filip Gotthard Schaffgotsch, but also to the mutual cultural interconnectedness of the mentioned estates. Karel Ditters von Dittersdorf in particular became the central figure in the cultural life of the above-mentioned castles, whose musical work was accompanied by performances in the castle theaters in Slezské Rudoltice and Velké Hoštice and at castle Jánský Vrch. Although cultural life in western Silesia developed in the shadow of the Seven Years' War, it flourished significantly. The literary and cultural panorama of the chateau in Westsilesia reflected not only the impulses of Baroque culture, but also received stimuli from literature, philosophy and lifestyle of Enlightenment.

ABSTRACT This article investigates the destruction of the Beaver Avenue commercial corridor and removal of 954 families in Pittsburgh’s Manchester neighborhood to create a 164-acre industrial park during the early 1960s. Known at the time as the Chateau West Redevelopment Project, the massive undertaking occurred in the context of national highway construction and industrial park development. These trends fueled a growing African American rebellion in Pittsburgh during the 1960s. With more than 5,700 families relocated throughout the city for fourteen urban renewal projects underway in 1963, the turmoil impacted a disproportionate number of low-income and Black residents. While the renewal story of Pittsburgh’s Lower Hill District and East Liberty neighborhoods is more familiar, there is little detailed research about Chateau West. This investigation discusses more fully the relationship between planned industrial districts and highway development to the emerging civil rights movement of the 1960s.

Résumé :
Abstract The UFR Lansad (Language centre teaching languages to specialists of other disciplines) was created in 2014 at the University of Lorraine. The process leading to its creation was led by a small number of teachers and researchers, from the pre-existing teams of the previous Lorraine universities (Molle et al. 2019). It is the result of didactic reflection and expertise, which convinced the University board to set up a structure dedicated to foreign language teaching. After several evolutions, the newly-created structure positioned itself as a policy maker in language teaching. Finally, the university board asked the UFR to set up a language training model that could be implemented throughout the institution. This training model involves blended-learning systems that emphasise the concepts of self-directed learning and autonomy and gives a central role to the EDOlang platform and the self-access centres since “part of the research and practice on learner autonomy is situated in self-access language learning settings” (Chateau and Tassinari 2021: 53). After a brief history of the creation of the UFR, the article focuses on this model, inspired by research carried out within the CRAPEL team (Guèly et al. 2021; Holec 2000). It also describes how the model is the result of the dissemination of innovative training courses implemented through action research over the last ten years (Chateau and Zumbihl 2010, 2012; Chateau and Bailly 2021). Furthermore, the paper explains how the institutional recognition of the training framework illustrates the need to promote a strong link between research and training.

Résumé :
China’s modern wine industry began in 1892 when Changyu Wine Company was founded. After more than 130 years of development, China has formed 11 major wine regions with their own characteristics. The wine grape varieties of China are divided into three categories: international mainstream varieties, Chinese indigenous varieties, and varieties that can be used for both winemaking and table grape purposes. There are various types of wine produced in China, including sparkling wine, dry white, dry red, rose, ice wine, aromatized wine, and fortified wine. There are more than 1,680 wineries in China, whose production modes are categorized as “Chateau & Chateau wines” mode and “winery & brand wines” mode. The number of Chateau enterprises accounts for 80% of the total, and is developing fast. China's wine industry management organizations mainly include Ministry (departments, bureaus) of Agriculture, and the Ministry (departments, bureaus) of Industry and Information Technology. And the industry service organizations mainly include the China Alcoholic Drinks Association (Wine Branch), China National Food Industry Association (Wine Branch), and Grape and Wine Association or Wine Industry Development Service Center established by provinces and cities. Up to now, 12 sub-wine regions in China have obtained the certification of geographical indication protection. Chinese wine consuming markets are divided into five groups, with huge consumption potential, and the activity of consumer market remains the top of Asia. China's wine industry integrates the three industries of grape growing, wine making and wine consumption, tourism, and cultural promotion. Such growth is in accordance with the advancement of agriculture, rural areas, and ecological protection, exhibiting sustainable development with vigor and vitality.

Résumé :
This paper presents an experimental investigation on the hydromechanical behaviour of a partially saturated soft rock (a porous chalk), the Chateau-Landon chalk. Such conditions correspond to those of a chalk mine known as Royer located in the North-centre of France in Paris basin, subjected to shrinking, drying and potential flooding cycles. To study this rock, we apply a method usually used in soils whose hydromechanical behaviour is strongly modified by changes in suction, according to the degree of water saturation. Different degrees of saturation are imposed by controlled relative humidity conditions with continuous measurement of physical parameters. Hydrostatic compression and conventional triaxial compression tests are performed under drained conditions for saturation degrees up to 100% under low confining pressures. The obtained results have allowed to show fundamental aspects of the chalk behaviour. Correlations between water saturation degree, confining pressure and the mechanical behaviour of the chalk are discussed.

Résumé :
This article deals with how the residents of the town Rosice perceive the surrounding landscape in aesthetic terms, how it affects them and which of the landscape components they find the most valuable and necessary to preserve for the next generations. This article briefly describes the essential characteristics as well as the landscape composition of the area in question. It summarizes the results of a sociological survey which was carried out in April 2015. The majority of respondents considered the town of Rosice to be a good place to liveand agreed that what they liked most were visual percepts of the area and the sites where panoramic views could be enjoyed. Those components which the residents of Rosice wished to preserve in the town of Rosice for the next generations is Chateau Rosice, Nejsvětější Trojice (the Holy Trinity) chapel, the Stone bridge, St. Martin’s church, and the way of the Cross leading to the Holy Trinity chapel. The natural components that the respondents frequently mentioned included Rosická Obora (deer‑park) wooded land, the park and garden adjacent to the Chateau, the way of the Cross lined with linden trees leading to the Holy Trinity chapel, and the river Bobrava. One of the most significant problems and threats to the countryside is, according to many respondents, the usurpation of land in the form of residential and commercial development.

Résumé :
Flumioxazin (Chateau 51WG) is an herbicide for the preemergence and early postemergence control of broadleaves and grasses. Chateau was recently labeled for use in non-bearing fruit trees and bearing grapes. Long-term weed control in apple, peach, and blueberry was investigated following fall application of herbicides. Treatments consisted of simazine 2.8 kg a.i., norflurazon 2.24 kg a.i., napropamide 2.24 kg a.i., and oryzalin 2.24 kg a.i. were applied on 11 Nov. 2003. Flumioxazin was also applied at 0.1 and 0.43 kg ai on apple and peach. All treatments included glyphosate 1 lb a.i. for burndown control of preexisting weeds. Weed control evaluation in mid-April or 4 months after application showed that flumioxazin-treated plots had no weeds present and no weed regrowth. Plots treated with napropamide, norflurazon, and oryzalin showed significant regrowth of dandelion, common ragweed, and chickweed. Simazine plots had fewer weeds germinating than the other herbicides. By early June or 6 months after application, no differences in residual weed control were observed for all treated plots when compared to the control. All plots were equally weedy and required immediate floor management measures. It appears that flumioxazin weed control benefit was exhausted by 6 months after application, compared to 4 months for all other herbicides. Fall application of flumioxazin can eliminate the need for early spring weed control. This time saved can be spent on other important activities such as pruning and disease and insect control.
