Most of the author's namesakes have humorous attributes, an unusually close relationship with one or more other characters, and a happy subsequent life. Three stages of the author's adult life are youthful, mature, and after separation from his wife. The fictional namesakes are most humorous in the author's youthful stage and least humorous after separation from his wife. The 12 fictional namesakes of Charles Dickens are compared with the two fictional namesakes of Jane Austen.

Esta obra, do poeta maldito, já recebeu mais de dez edições no Brasil ― a primeira em 1937 ― e com certeza outras virão, mas esta tem todo um charme especial, a começar pela capa que traz o autorretrato de Baudelaire. Petits poèmes en prose (Le spleen de Paris) apareceu pela primeira vez, como edição póstuma, no quarto volume das Obras completas (1869) do poeta, organizadas por Théodore de Banville (1823-1891) e Charles Asselineau (1820-874) e editadas pela Gallimard.

Charles de Vivray's Three Concerts Music is a keystone in the entire work of Marie Krysinska, who was first and foremost a musician. Guided by the rule of universal harmony, the perfect realisations of which are musical compositions, she applies it in her poems as well as in her narrative texts. Krysinska's novel, La Force du désir [The Force of Desire], was read in its time primarily as a roman à clef. Behind the literary characters are real people: poets, writers, actresses, singers, journalists, composers. One of the portraits is particularly touching, that of de Vivray whose real-life prototype was Charles-Erhardt de Sivry. A musician, conductor, poet and music theorist, de Sivry charmed listeners with his compositions. In the diegesis, all his professional activities are mentioned, more or less revealed. Thanks to Charles de Vivray's three concerts, the novelistic space transforms into a musical space.

Housed in the Charles Talbut Onions Archive within the Cadbury Research Library (Special Collections) at the University Birmingham are twelve unpublished letters from C.S. Lewis to his friend and colleague Charles T. Onions, one of Oxford's most renowned etymologists and long-time editor of the Oxford English Dictionary. The letters, about a third of which are dated, seem to have been composed between 1929 and the 1950's. Their bulk is given to Lewis's work on medieval literature, offering new insights into his reading, particularly of Milton and Aquinas. The correspondence is published her for the first time, accompanied by approximate datings of undated material (by Lewis handwriting expert Charlie W. Starr) and brief commentaries offering content analysis, textual and historical context, and indications for future research.

Charlie van der Horst, an emeritus professor at the University of North Carolina and a friend of Pathogens and Immunity, disappeared from sight on Friday, June 14 during a marathon swim in the Hudson River. His death was confirmed. Few who knew him would call him Charles as formality was not his strong-suit. Charlie was born in Holland to a Dutch father and a Polish Holocaust survivor mother. His family moved to the Buffalo, New York area and sent Charlie to school at Andover. He attended Duke University where he captained the varsity swim team in 1973-74. He remained a powerful swimmer, competing often in national Masters’ competitions. He received his MD degree from Harvard in 1979 and trained in medicine at Montefiore Medical Center and Infectious Diseases at the University of North Carolina. He was an expert in the management of fungal diseases and when the AIDS epidemic began, he knew he had to commit his career to AIDS research and care. He led a highly successful AIDS Clinical Trials Unit at the University of North Carolina and was a respected leader in this national consortium who gained international recognition and respect for his work. More than most anyone else I know, Charlie was driven to fight for justice, anywhere, any time. At the 2000 IAS meeting in Durban, South Africa he recognized that the greater AIDS need was in the developing world and he redirected his entire career towards the development of research and care programs in Africa. When Ebola hit West Africa, Charlie rushed to Liberia to help. In the U.S., Charlie was on the front lines urging his state legislature to deal fairly with all North Carolinians, working hard to fight for equity in health care. He was beloved by so many, respected for his talents, admired for his decency. He was, as my grandmother would have said—a mentsch—and more. Our world is lucky to have had him and is diminished by his loss.

Este artículo analiza la influencia del cine burlesco de los años 20 en la trilogía novelesca de Enrique Jardiel Poncela en la que se multiplican las referencias y alusiones a Charles “Charlie” Chaplin y al personaje mítico creado por él. En esta obra se aprecia el afán del escritor madrileño por adaptar el gag chapliniano al ámbito de la novela e intentar proponer una versión femenina de Charlot. Este homenaje a Chaplin pone de manifiesto el vínculo entre las ideas estéticas de Enrique Jardiel Poncela y las del maestro del cine cómico al que los vanguardistas de principios de siglo consideraban un icono de la modernidad.

When 1670 glass plate negatives taken by Kohukohu photographer Charles Peet Dawes were gifted to Auckland Libraries in 2018, it was immediately obvious from annotations on the negative envelopes that established ideas of how and when Charlie took up photography needed to be re-examined. Charlie’s notes also revealed the names of some previously unsuspected Hokianga visitors and residents who influenced and assisted him in his artistic endeavours. In addition, buried in the collection was a unique record of the 1898 Dog Tax Rebellion together with invaluable and historically important photographs of the people and communities of the Hokianga at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth.

Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar de que maneira se dá a construção de personagens queer na literatura quando suas identidades são constituídas de maneira interseccional à identidade latina nos Estados Unidos. Para isso, foram selecionados dois contos da coletânea From macho to mariposa: new gay latino fiction (2011), organizada por Charles Rice-González e Charlie Vázquez. Verificou-se, assim, de que maneira a interseccionalidade étnica que compõe a identidade desses sujeitos, a saber, a ascendência latino-americana, afeta suas vivências enquanto sujeitos queer, além de discutir o modo pelo qual esses sujeitos, já segregados devido a questões étnicas e culturais, sofrem um novo processo de marginalização em função de sua expressão de gênero e/ou sexualidade.

In an 1857Saturday Reviewarticleof the novelTwo Years Ago, T. C. Sanders characterizes Charles Kingsley's ideal man: he “fears God and can walk a thousand miles in a thousand hours – [he] breathes God's free air on God's rich earth, and at the same time can hit a woodcock, doctor a horse, and twist a poker around his fingers” (qtd. in Haley 108). Tom Thurnall, the fearless, constitutionally robust, well-traveled doctor and hero ofTwo Years Ago, fits these requirements. His physical strength also manifests itself as a charmed immunity to illness: during a cholera epidemic in Aberalva (a fictional Cornish town), “[Tom] thought nothing about death and danger at all . . . Sleep he got when he could, and food as often as he could; into the sea he leapt, morning and night, and came out fresher each time” (Kingsley,Years288). Charles Kingsley's own self-proclaimed medical and religious philosophies give clear insight intoTwo Years Ago'sintended effects. A sanitary reformer in the mould of Edwin Chadwick and Florence Nightingale, Kingsley felt that disease arose from crowding, filth, and poisonous vapors. Kingsley's contemporaries named his perspective “muscular Christianity,” recognizing that Kingsley “strong arms” his readers by inspiring in them fear and uncertainty about their own health practices and then shows them the way, with examples like Tom, to an active, devout lifestyle.

This issue went to press almost exactly four years after the death of Charles Gillespie, in whose honor I wish to dedicate the lustration symposium. A political scientist at the University of Wisconsin with a broad range of comparative interests, Charlie's major work chronicled the reemergence of democracy in Uruguay. He would doubtless have been a contributor to this issue were he still alive, and there were many times during the course of working on it when I wished I could have asked for his advice. In addition to his passion for democracy, I remember Charlie for his learning and his humor, both of which he wore with an elegant English grace. Throughout his long illness, he never lost his appreciation for the silly; his life was proof that stoicism and courage need not be cold virtues, and the world is a much poorer place in his absence.

My name was Charles Gard, but everyone called me Charlie. I was eleven months old when my parents decided to end a contentious legal fight and allow me to die. I was born in West London on August 4, 2016. My dad, Chris, is a postman and my mom’s name is Connie. They are still young, only in their thirties. At birth, I seemed to be developing normally, but by October, it was apparent that I was not gaining weight. I was then admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital, one of the world’s leading children’s hospitals, and treated for encephalomyopathic mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome, a rare genetic condition which prevents cells from producing sufficient energy to maintain normal bodily functions. Experts on my form of MDDS, called RRM2B, unanimously agreed that there was no cure or treatment. At the time of my death on July 27, 2017, it was thought that only sixteen children globally have this condition.

Charles Juliet découvre à sept ans qu’il est un enfant adopté. Il a une autre mère dont il ne verra jamais le visage. Il en a été séparé à l’âge de trois mois et elle meurt avant qu’il ne puisse jamais la revoir. Il ne verra que son cercueil lors de l’enterrement et ultérieurement, on lui montrera des photographies. Les premières failles dont rendent compte des œuvres comme Lambeaux ou La Fracture proviennent de cette rupture première avec la mère. De nombreuses questions vouées à rester sans réponse en découlent. Chaque question est vécue comme une déchirure. C’est l’écriture autobiographique qui est chargée de faire renaître la mère. Cette accession à une parole propre, à la reconstruction et à la reconquête imaginaire de l’origine fait de Juliet un écrivain. Accoucher de la mère le fait naître à son tour puisqu’il engendre une œuvre centrée autour de cette quête de l’absente insaisissable. Cette production marquée par la fragmentation et le désir du neutre se caractérise par sa modernité.

Résumé La notion de charme soulève une confusion de sens, car elle est souvent utilisée dans un sens commun et dans une perspective occidentale. Le charme a été défini comme une qualité naturelle et s’oppose à la séduction, qui est une stratégie du paraître. Cette distinction reprend celles de l’inné et de l’acquis, comme du naturel et du culturel ou socialement construit. Les représentations du charme féminin des Peuls Djeneri du Mali montrent que le charme n’est pas un don naturel ou inné. Il relève des représentations sociales du corps, du symbolisme humoral et des normes esthétiques. Il s’appuie sur un savoir-faire gestuel, sur le code d’expression des émotions et sur l’incorporation de valeurs sociales qui lui donnent un sens. Le charme met donc en relation différents ordres, le biologique, le social et le culturel.

The rise of technology and information makes it easier for humans to communicate, introducing new aspects about the relationship between individual freedom and technology. Digital technology and social media are very influential in everyday life, communication between family and friends is not limited by geographical challenges. Social media makes it easier to express and understand ourselves through online communities. This research aims to see how self-representation in the digital era is shown through Netflix TV show Black Mirror episode Nosedive by Charlie Brooker. The reasercher conducted a semiotic analysis on the first episode in Season 3, "Nosedive," regarding the self-representation shown and how the relationship was created through social media in all Lacie Pound's relationships. Obsessed with social rankings Lacie must carry out positive interactions and represent herself according to social standards. Rating values in Nosedive make relationships between people seemed fake because they are concerned with the judgments given to each other. All people in the world must follow the existing social standards or they can be exiled because they have low rating. Nosedive mimics the real life problem of obsession with social achievement through cognitive alienation, that tells their current excitement with digital and social connectivity. This study uses Charles Sanders Pierce's semiotics theory with a qualitative research method approach. Researchers collect data by observation and documentation, library research and online sources.Munculnya teknologi dan informasi memudahkan manusia untuk berkomunikasi, memperkenalkan aspek-aspek baru tentang hubungan antara kebebasan individu dan teknologi. Teknologi digital dan media sosial sangat berpengaruh dalam kehidupan sehari-hari, komunikasi antara keluarga dan teman tidak dibatasi oleh tantangan geografis. Media sosial memudahkan mengekspresikan dan memahami diri kita sendiri melalui komunitas online. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat bagaimana self-representasi di era digital yang ditunjukan dalam acara TV Black Mirror episode Nosedive karya Charlie Brooker. Penulis melakukan analisis semiotika pada episode pertama di Musim 3, "Nosedive," mengenai self-representasi yang ditunjukan dan bagaimana hubungan yang diciptakan terhadap melalui media sosial dalam semua hubungan Lacie Pound. Terobsesi dengan peringkat sosial Lacie harus melakukan interaksi positif dan merepresentasikan dirinya sesuai dengan standar sosial. Peringkat nilai dalam Nosedive membuat hubungan antar masyarakat menjadi palsu karena mereka mementingkan penilaian yang diberikan satu sama lain. Abstract For users of climate services, the ability to quickly determine the datasets that best fit one’s needs would be invaluable. The volume, variety, and complexity of climate data makes this judgment difficult. The ambition of CHARMe (Characterization of metadata to enable high-quality climate services) is to give a wider interdisciplinary community access to a range of supporting information, such as journal articles, technical reports, or feedback on previous applications of the data. The capture and discovery of this “commentary” information, often created by data users rather than data providers, and currently not linked to the data themselves, has not been significantly addressed previously. CHARMe applies the principles of Linked Data and open web standards to associate, record, search, and publish user-derived annotations in a way that can be read both by users and automated systems. Tools have been developed within the CHARMe project that enable annotation capability for data delivery systems already in wide use for discovering climate data. In addition, the project has developed advanced tools for exploring data and commentary in innovative ways, including an interactive data explorer and comparator (“CHARMe Maps”), and a tool for correlating climate time series with external “significant events” (e.g., instrument failures or large volcanic eruptions) that affect the data quality. Although the project focuses on climate science, the concepts are general and could be applied to other fields. All CHARMe system software is open-source and released under a liberal license, permitting future projects to reuse the source code as they wish.

Resumo: Este artigo discute como Charles Taylor reconstrói a era secular. A tese de Taylor é que a era secular não pode estar restrita à ideia da saída da religião do espaço público (secularidade 1), nem apenas pode significar a diminuição de crenças e práticas religiosas (secularidade 2). Taylor propõe uma nova leitura da era secular (secularidade 3), segundo a qual o pluralismo de crentes e não crentes seria a melhor descrição para um mundo que se seculariza, mas que, ao mesmo tempo, as doutrinas de fé ainda continuam influenciado o modo de vida das pessoas. Taylor enfatiza que a religião ainda se relaciona com a formação das diversas identidades, à medida que exerce, ao mesmo tempo, uma perspectiva de reconhecimento dos sujeitos, mesmo em sociedades modernas. Na parte final do artigo, são discutidas críticas à filosofia de Taylor, a partir das propostas teóricas de Jürgen Habermas e Nancy Fraser. A metodologia consistiu em análises das obras de Taylor (principalmente Uma Era Secular, como obra-chave deste artigo), bem como de seus intérpretes e estudiosos.
