Résumé :
Channa punctatus, a species of freshwater fish, was subjected to an experiment to measure the effects of lead acetate on its morphology, respiratory rate, and operculum activity. The fish in the experiment were dosed with lead acetate, which might have entered their bodies through their gills, skin, or digestive systems. Lead acetate was shown to have accumulated on the gills, operculum, morphology, and respiratory rate of the cichlid fish Channa punctatus. Fishes are particularly vulnerable to the accumulation of heavy metals in fresh water since they are the top consumer in aquatic systems. Fish consumption may have an effect on humans, especially in regions where fish is a staple meal. Keyboard: Lead Acetate, Behavioral changes, Operculum movement, Channa punctatus.

Résumé :
Heavy metal pollution in aquatic environment has a significant adverse effect on fishes and also to the human being. The present investigation was designed to assess the concentrations of heavy metals in water and fish, Channa punctatus of Sawan Nallaha, a tributary of River Rapti in Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh, India. The different water samples were collected from the Sawan Nallaha, downstream the city of Balrampur, and analyzed for the selected heavy metals by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The concentration of heavy metals in Sawan Nallaha was below the permissible limit of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Heavy metal accumulation and bioconcentration factor were studied in gill, liver, kidney and muscles of fish, Channa punctatus inhabiting the Sawan Nallaha. The order of bioaccumulation of different metal concentrations in fish was: Ni >Pb>Mn> Zn > Cr > Cu>Cd and the order of total observed metal concentration in tissues was Liver> Kidney>Gill> Muscles. The results of Bioconcentration Factor (BCF) showed that fish, Channa punctatus has the ability to accumulate heavy metals in its tissues. As illustrated in BCFs, most of the heavy metals moderately bioaccumulate except nickel and lead which are highly accumulative. The fish, Channa punctatus in this study was used as biomonitoring indicator

The chromosomal aberration test in kidney cells of Channa punctatus was conducted to study the genotoxic effect of synthetic pyrethroid fenvalerate, Different chromosomal abnormalities were seen and their frequency was recoded in metaphase spreads obtained from fishes exposed to three sub lethal concentrations (0.0625, 0.0314 and 0.0157 ppm) of this compound. The exposure to fenvalerate caused various structural abnormalities in chromosomes such as chromatid break, fragment, gap, chromatid separation, deletion and ring type chromosomes. Results obtained in present investigations clearly indicate that fenvalerate acts as a genotoxic agent in Channa punctatus.

Résumé :
Summary Snakehead fishes are widely consumed throughout South East Asia, China and India because of their good taste of meat and high nutrient values such as presence of prostaglandins, thromboxane and Omega-6 fatty acid. Parasitic infection constitutes significant economic loss in fish production. The aim of this work was to study the seasonal variation of helminths in snakeheads. In the presented study, a three-year survey has been performed. A total of 1013 individuals of Channa punctatus and 247 individuals of Channa striatus were examined. A total of 3783 helminths were collected, with an average of 3.02 helminths/fish. 43.50 % individuals of C. punctatus and 59.10 % of C. striatus were found to be infected with acanthocephalans, trematodes, nematodes and cestodes per year. The prevalence and mean abundance of Pallisentis sp. was at its peak in summer. However the prevalence of trematodes, nematodes and cestodes was at peak during autumn. Mean abundance of nematodes was at peak in summer. Interestingly, the males were found more infected as compared to the females and the infection rate in males peaked in summer. In comparison to other weight groups, medium size hosts (21 – 40 g) were found more consistently infected. Thus the results indicate that there are seasonal variations in parasitic helminths infecting C. punctatus and C. striatus which also depend upon sex and weight. These variations may be attributed to various environmental and biological factors including parasite life cycle and immune level of host.

Résumé :
The study was conducted to determine the comparative occurrence of protozoan parasites of two host species- Anabas testudineus and Channa punctatus. The host fishes were collected from April, 2018 to March, 2019 from freshwater bodies of Mymensingh, Kishoreganj, Faridpur and Jashore districts of Bangladesh. Three species of myxozoa (Henneguya mystusia, Henneguya qadrii and Henneguya acerinae) and four genera/species of ciliophora (Trichodina acuta, Trichodina sp., Epistylis lwoffi and Amphileptus disciformis) in A. testudineus; three genera/species of myxozoa (Henneguya chaudhuryi, Henneguya bengalensis and Myxobolus sp.), three species of ciliophora (Trichodina pediculus, Epistylis lwoffi and Apisoma piscicolum) and a few actinosporean stage of myxoza in C. punctatus were identified. The prevalence of protozoan infections were found higher in A. testudineus (76.19%) compare to C. punctatus (51.72%). However, mean intensity was relatively higher in C. punctatus (95.93 ± 41.53) than that of A. testudineus (71.38 ± 32.26). Myxozoans were clearly dominant group in both hosts. Multiple parasitic infections were higher in A. testudineus. The highest parasitic infection was observed in Mymensingh (100%) and lowest in Jashore (40%) in A. testudineus, whereas it was highest in fish of Faridpur (100%) and lowest in Mymensingh (33.33%) in C. punctatus. Shannon Diversity Indices indicated that the parasite community was poorly diverged in both hosts of all study areas. However, Simpson’s Diversity revealed that, parasites community was moderately diverged in both hosts in Mymensingh and in other study areas they were poorly diverged. Dhaka Univ. J. Biol. Résumé :
This investigation was carried out to investigate the effects of ectoparasites on the organic reserves of some tissues of fresh water snakeheaded fish, Channa punctatus collected from the polluted lotic fresh water body flowing through Balrampur city, India. The results indicated that the highest rate of parasitic infection in fish significantly reduce carbohydrate, protein and lipid contents in liver, muscles, gill, gut and kidney. Results of the present investigation also indicated that the Superoxide (SOD) and Peroxidase (POD) activities were significantly increased in liver, muscles, gills, gut and kidney tissues of the infected fish compared to uninfected fish. The differences in organic reserves between infected and uninfected fish, Channa punctatus indicated that the heavy infestation of parasites decreases the nutritional value such as moisture, ash, fat, protein and carbohydrate as well as energy production level. Infection with parasites in fish had the highest effect on liver, muscles, gills, gut and kidney.

Résumé :
The pottery and ceramic industry release toxic heavy metals during preparation and other steps which in turn go to environment and finally to aquatic ecosystem through leaching and runoff water. In the view of above facts it is mandatory to explore this non target effect of ceramic industry for aquatic ecosystem. A dye is a coloured material that chemically attaches to the substrate it is applied on. Dyes are distinguished from pigments by the fact that they do not chemically attach to the substrate they colour. In most cases, the dye is administered in an aqueous solution. Keeping these points in view, the present study is undertaken to assess impact of pottery industry chemical tin oxide on total leucocyte count and erythrocyte sedimentation rate of Channa punctatus (Bloch.). The TLC and ESR have been found to be increased after treatment due to hematotoxic effect of pottery chemicals and adverse effect on hemopoietic system of fish. Résumé :
Histopathology is an important diseases diagnostic tool. Penetration into the host is the first step for a microbial agent to mutiply and invade the vital organs of its host. Like all animals fishes suffers from environmental, stress, which is followed by pathogenic attacks and parasitic afflictions causing Epizootic Ulcerative syndrome (EUS). Histological investigations of tissues of EUS infected fish Channa punctatus showed an eroded epidermis, necrosis of skeletal muscles and intense granulomatous inflammation, infiltration of mixed inflammatory cells in muscular as well as submuscular layers of the skin. Also a characteristic focal grannular granuloma in the gill lamellae was noticed. The electron microscopic observations, of the tissue cells of the fishe showed viruses like Parvovirus even at a red spot stage. Thus, it can be said that Viruses being crystalline in nature have cellular penetrating power & the EUS infection follows the phyllogenetic evolution in life in true sense i.e. RNA virus followed by Bacterial cell and then Fungus. Thus, the presence of EUS in Channa punctatus is confirmed histologically.

In Epizootic ulcerative syndrome (EUS) affected Channa punctatus and Clarias magur, the serum total proteins were decreased by 24.63% and 38.75% respectively along with A:G ratio. During immune response, the antibodies produced were found to be positively exponential with the amount of antigens (bacteria, fungus and viruses). The present changes may be because of the changing environmental conditions especially temperature fluctuations producing stress conditions in the fishes.

Résumé :
The study was conducted to determine the nutritive value in terms of proximate composition, fatty acid (FA) profile and lipid quality indices off our catfish species (Wallago attu, Ompok pabda, Clarias gariepinus, Pangasidon hypophthalmus) and two murrel species (Channa striatus, Channa punctatus) from Odisha, India. Among the species investigated the maximum fillet protein (22.35%) and lipid (13.45%) was recorded in C. striatus and C. gariepinus, respectively. All the fish species showed a FA profile of saturated fatty acid (SFA)> mono unsaturated fatty acid (MUFA)>poly unsaturated fatty acid (PUFA). The n-3 PUFA distribution in the experimental species was observed as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6 n-3)>alpha linolenic acid (ALA, 18:3 n-3)>eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5 n-3) except C. gariepinus. The fillet EPA and DHA content of two murrel species and W. attu were similar and significantly higher (P<0.05) among the species. Similarly these three species viz., W. attu, C. striatus and C. punctatus showed maximum DHA quantity in their fillet. The n-6/n-3 ratios in five species except C. gariepinus were below 4.0. The athrogenic index (IA) and thrombogenic index (IT) were<1 and cholesterolomic index (h/H) for all species were>1, suitable for human health. Overall, considering nutritive value, fillet protein and very essential fatty acids, the experimental species can be arranged in the following order C. Straitus>C. punctatus=W. attu>P. Hypophthalmus>O. Pabda>C. gariepinus.

Résumé :
The DNA damaging effect of 4-nonylphenol was evaluated in blood cells of fish Channa punctatus by using single gel electrophoresis assay (SGEA). Fish were exposed to three sublethal concentrations (0.15 mg/l, 0.31 mg/l and 0.63 mg/l) of 4-NP which were calculated after LC50 determination. Exposure was given for 96 hours and blood sampling was done after 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours. Tail moment (TM), tail intensity (TI), tail length (TL) and olive tail moment (OTM) were used as parameters for assessing DNA damage. Comet assay results indicated significant DNA fragmentation in blood cells of C. punctatus as a significant increase in the values of all parameters was observed when exposured to different concentrations of 4- NP. Highest damage was observed at 24 h of exposure followed by a decrease in value at 48 and 72 h while at 96 h of exposure increase in the value of all the parameters were observed. On the other hand, after exposure to different concentrations highest damage was seen after treatment with 0.31 mg/l of NP. Owing to the results, the blood cells of C. punctatus show great sensitivity for 4-NP and can be used as bio-indicator for genotoxicity testing.

Résumé :
Histopathological studies of early and late stages of Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome infected fishes from three natural ponds at Demra, Dhaka. Five different types of freshwater wild fishes such as Anabas testudineus, Channa punctatus, Colisa fasciatus, Mystus vittatus and Puntius ticto were collected from August, 2009 to December, 2010. In this study, a prevalence of ~ 64% (322/500) was recorded. Channa punctatus was found to be the most infected fish among the examined fishes. Petechia haemorrhages and moderate necrosis with melanomacrophages and multinucleated giant cells without fungal hyphae were pronounced in the early stages in the muscles. Moderate to severe necrosis friable tissues possessing trailing fungal hyphae associated with fungal, protozoan and bacterial infection may have caused denuding or total erosion of the affected tissues. Extensive ulcers and high mortality were prominent in the late stages of infection. Cystic granulomas associated with multinucleated giant cells often engulfing fungal hyphae were the most characteristic features at the late stages in EUS affected fish. Other observations made were muscle degeneration, surrounding perforated muscle fibres and frequent degeneration of the blood vessel walls. However, the causative link between EUS and the observed histopathological features needs to be further elucidated.Bangladesh J. Zool. 43(1): 121-130, 2015

Résumé :
The current study focused on to evaluate the bioactive potential and immunostimulant effect of seaweeds in striped murrel Channa punctatus against the fish pathogen Aeromonas hydrophila. The aqueous extracts of seaweeds, Glacilaria foliifera, Acanthophora spicifera and Ulva lactuca were obtained in four different concentrations (25 µL, 50 µL, 75 µL and 100 µL) and evaluated for their immunostimulant potential. Aqueous extract of G. foliifera and A. spicifera has shown promising activity against fish pathogen. G. foliifera exhibited higher bacterial inhibitory zone of 8mm at 100 µL concentration followed by A. spicifera with 6mm at same concentration. The disease challenge study was used to ascertain the immunostimulant efficacy of active seaweed extracts. C. punctatus was administrated with the A. hydrophila and then fed with artificial feed incorporated with seaweeds extract. The survival rate seems to be higher in G. foliifera (80%) when compared with A. spicifera (60%). Observed result shows that both seaweeds possess active metabolites which may pave the way for the discovery of novel compounds with immunostimulant potential, which can be used in the field of aqua industry to augment disease management. Résumé :
The genus Pallisentis has been mostly found among the freshwater fishes of Channidae family. Pallisentis ophiocephali is characterized with some unique characters of proboscis, hooks, and spines. However, initial description is a little sketchy and yet not updated. The present study communicates the detail morphology of an acanthocephalan species obtained from two host fishes of Channidae family—Channa striatus and Channa punctatus—during a one-year survey from different places of Hooghly District, West Bengal. The parasite is examined under light microscope as well as under scanning electron microscope. Unique four hook circles with different sizes, collar, and trunk spines, male and female genital organs are described for taxonomic study. Scanning electron microscopic study also provides the detailed information about the surface topography including longitudinal muscle, retractor muscles, and posterior ends. Comparing the studied specimen with other closely related species, the present acanthocephalan specimen has been identified as P. ophiocephali from Channa striatus. The retractable nature of proboscis has also been studied from the live specimens with the help of light microscope.

Résumé :
A study was carried out to determine dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its metabolites in Gangetic mystus, Mystus cavasius and spotted snakehead, Channa punctatus. DDTs was extracted by QuEChERS method, cleaned-up by H2SO4 treatment and analyzed by GC with Electron Capture Detector. The calibration curves were linear over the range of the tested concentrations as shown by the fact that the correlation coefficients (r2) for the linearity range were 0.995-0.999. The detection limit was found to be 5ppb for DDTs and the quantification limit was 6.5ppb. Recoveries were found (70-130%); this is acceptable for fish samples according to standard methodology. The DDT and its metabolites were not detected in the liver of M. cavasius and C. punctatus. In this study, M. cavasius was found to contain detectable amount of residual targeted pesticides DDTs at 64.21 ppb in digestive tract, 75.23 ppb in gill, 119.82 ppb in gonad and 45.84 ppb in muscle. The C. punctatus residual targeted DDTs were at 8.42 ppb in digestive tract, 4.04 ppb in gill, 56.44 ppb in gonad and 23.15 ppb in muscle. However, this study shows the higher DDT and its metabolites were in the gonad of M. cavasius and C. punctatus. Bangladesh J. Zool. 49 (3): 393-402, 2021

Résumé :
Pesticides are chemicals used for pest control in the agricultural fields. Modern agricultural pesticides result in indiscriminate use of various pesticides. Which usually enter into the aquatic environment? They finally reach the surrounding water bodies through surface runoff affecting the aquatic fauna. 2, 4-D is frequently used pesticides due to its effectiveness and rapid breakdown into environmentally safe products. A 96hr static sub-lethal concentration toxicity test was carried out to determine the LC50 value of 2, 4-D on the snake head fish channa punctatus. The fish were exposed to 5 different concentrations of 2, 4-D (40, 45, 50, 55 & 60ppm) for toxicity. Control (0.0ppm) was also carried out. The data were subjected to Finney’s Probit analysis and processed with Trimmed Spearman-Karber statistical software. The LC50 values for 2, 4-D for 24, 48, 72 and 96hr were 4.87, 3.12, 2.69 and 1.92 mgl-1 respectively. At higher concentration of 2, 4-D (3.25 mgl-1 and above) the fish showed uncoordinated behavior such as erratic and jerky swimming, attempt to jump out of water, frequent surfacing and effected the allover of body.

Résumé :
Morphometric variation study was carried out using truss analysis in freshwater murrel,Channa punctatus(Bloch, 1793), to explore different phenotypic stocks ofC. punctatus.Significant variation in the morphometric analysis was observed using the truss network and multivariate analysis of the three subpopulations of freshwater murrel,C. punctatus, from the two different regions of India. Principal component analysis accounted for a total variation of 91.95% by the first three principal components. PC 1 represented the variation due to size and PC 2 and PC 3 represented variations due to shape. The 95% confidence ellipses depicted the clear isolation between the samples in scatter graph of PC 1 on PC 2. The combined groups plot (DF 1 on DF 2) based on discriminant function analysis (DFA) also validated the existence of three different subpopulations. In group classification using DFA, 100 percent of all the samples were correctly classified into their original subpopulation. These results support the existence of multiracial composition ofC. punctatusacross the different geographical isolated sites and, thus, these findings indicate the presence of three different phenotypic stocks ofC. punctatus.

Résumé :
Metacercaria Clinostomum complanatum is a digenetic trematode, which is mainly found in fresh water fishes. Present communication deals with the infection status of C. complanatum in C. punctatus of Meerut district, which is supported by the data spreading over one year. About 250 specimens of C. punctatus from different ponds of Meerut were studied through regular periodical collection in the year Jan 2010 to Dec 2010. Overall prevalence 35.6%, mean intensity 3.06 and abundance 1.09 were reported. The infection was maximum in winter and minimum in rainy season. Prevalence, intensity and abundance of the infestation were also found to be related to different length group and sex of the hosts, the medium sized fishes were more infected and the larger size fishes were less infected while the smaller size fishes showed moderate infection. Susceptibility of infection was not significantly different between male and female fish.

Résumé :
The aim of present study was to assess the genotoxic effects of endocrine-disrupting compounds 4-nonylphenol (NP) on Channa punctatus after sub chronic exposure. Blood cells from gill and kidney were used for the study and micronucleated cell (MNC) and aberrant cell (AC) frequencies were used as biological indicators. The exposure was given to C. punctatus for 90 days, and the effect was seen after 30, 60, and 90 days of exposure. Three sublethal concentrations were decided after calculating the safe application rate. Exposure resulted in increased frequency of MNC and AC in both the tissues. Gill tissue was found to be more sensitive to 4-nonylphenol exposure. Highest MNC and AC frequency was found at 90 days of exposure in gill tissue and the values were 4.45±0.28 and 63.71±0.84 respectively. After exposure for 90 days, post-30 days recovery was also studied and we found a significant reduction (p?0.01) in the values of both the parameters showing a great capacity of C. punctatus to restore its DNA integrity.

Résumé :
Heavy metal contamination in fresh water bodies is of great concern owing to their toxicity, persistence and bioaccumulation. The current study deals with the acute toxicity of cadmium to fresh water fish, Channa punctatus. The objective of this study was to grasp the link between mortality and abnormal behavioral and morphological changes of C. punctatus exposed to cadmium chloride. Static bioassay tests were carried out to evaluate LC50 value of Cadmium (Cd) for fresh water fish, C. punctatus as well as the behavioral responses and morphological changes were also observed. Fish after treatment with various concentrations of cadmium chloride for different exposure period the percent mortality was recorded. The lowest cadmium chloride concentration at which mortality was observed as 45 mg/l. The first death of experimental fish was recorded as 125 mg/l at 24 hrs. of exposure. After 96 hrs. LC50 value of cadmium (Cd) was found to be 80.62mg/l. The major behavioral responses observed during the experiment were restlessness, jumping, erratic swimming, gulping of air at the surface, loss of equilibrium, sluggishness, opercular movements and fishes lied on the water surface before death and morphological changes like, discoloration of skin, pigmented patches on body, shedding of scales, sedimentation of chemical on body, mucous secretion, and ballooning were observed in exposed animals. The observed data showed that C.punctatus can be used as a good bio-indicator for heavy metal contamination in fresh water bodies.
