Résumé :
Equilibrium studies have been carried out on complex formation of M2+ ions (M = Ni and Cu) with L = barbituric acid (BA) in aqueous solution at 25.0±0.1°C and with an ionic strength of I=0.10 M (KNO3) in aqueous medium. The basicity of the ligand was also assessed by the determination of the dissociation constants of the ligand. The experimental pH titration data were analyzed with the help of the BEST computer program in order to evaluate the stability constants of the various species formed. The stability constants of the binary systems decrease in the order of Cu(II) > Ni(II). Distribution diagrams for the species were drawn showing the concentrations of individual species as a function of pH by the SPE software program.

Speciation of Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes with succinic acid in the presence of anionic, cationic and non-ionic surfactants at an ionic strength of 0.16 mol dm-3 and temperature 303 K were investigated pH metrically. The existence of different binary complex species was established from modelling studies using the computer program MINIQUAD75. The decreased stability of the complexes with increasing micellar content was explained by electrostatic forces. The influence of the micelles on the chemical speciation is discussed based on the mole fraction of the medium. Distribution diagrams of various species of the complexes in relation to pH are presented.

Résumé :
We modified an algorithm for mechanical ventilation of infants with respiratory distress syndrome to create an interactive user-friendly computer program. To determine the effectiveness of this computer program, we evaluated the correction of deranged arterial blood gases in three groups of neonates: group I, treated before the introduction of the computer into the nursery; group II, managed by pediatric residents with the guidance of the computer program; group III, treated after the introduction of the computer into the nursery but managed without consideration of the computer output. Arterial blood gas values improved more frequently in the neonates managed with computer consultation (group II, 65/75, 87%) than in both control groups (group I, 37/57, 65%, P < .005; and group III, 46/63, 73%, P < .05). Furthermore, increases in ventilatory support in the presence of normal arterial blood gas values occurred only in patients managed without computer guidance. In a teaching institution, more effective care of neonates with respiratory failure may be facilitated by computer-assisted management of mechanical ventilators.

Résumé :
A bankcheck reading system using cross validation of both the legal and the courtesy amounts is presented in this paper. Some of the challenges posed by the task are (i) segmentation of the legal amount into words, (ii) location of boundaries between dollars and cents amounts, and (iii) high accuracy in terms of recognition performance. Word segmentation in the legal amount is a serious issue because of the nature of the data and patrons' writing habits which tend to clump words together. We have developed a word segmentation algorithm based on the character segmentation results to address this issue. The list of possible amounts generated by the word segmentation hypotheses is used as lexicon for the courtesy amount recognition. The order of magnitude of the amount is estimated during legal amount recognition. We treat the courtesy amount as a numeral string and apply the same word recognition scheme as used for the legal amount. Our approach to check recognition differs from traditional methods in two significant aspects: First, our emphasis on both the legal and the courtesy amounts is balanced. We use an accurate word recognizer which performs equally well on alpha words and digit strings. Second, our combination strategy is serial rather than the commonly used parallel method. Experimental results show that 43.8% of check images are correctly read with an error rate of 0%.

Résumé :
Since the widespread adoption of edge computing and IoT technology, Control-Flow Hijacking (CFH) attacks targeting programs in resource-constrained embedded devices have become prevalent. While the Coarse-Grained Control-Flow integrity Attestation (CGCFA) lacks accuracy for the CFH attacks detection, the Fine-Grained Control-Flow integrity Attestation (FGCFA) detect the attacks more accurately but with high overheads, which can be a big burden (e.g., to industrial control system with strict performance requirements). In this paper, we propose a NSGA-II (Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II) based Granularity-Adaptive Control-Flow Attestation (GACFA) for the programs in embedded devices. Specifically, we propose a Granularity-Adaptive Control-Flow representation model to reduce the complexity of programs’ control-flow graph and propose NSGA-II-based granularity-adaptive strategy generation algorithm to balance the security and performance requirements. Besides, runtime protection for the GACFA at the program end with SGX is proposed to protect the integrity and confidentiality of control-flow measurement data. The experiments show that our work can find out the best-so-far control-flow granularity with stability and provide secure program attestation for the verifier. In addition, the security/performance benefit of adopting our proposal over CGCFA is 13.7, 25.1, and 43.0 times that of adopting FGCFA over ours in different threat scenarios.

Résumé :
Equilibrium study on complex formation of L-histidine with Pb(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II) has been investigated pH metrically in DMSO-water mixtures (0–60% v/v) at 303 K and 0.16 mol L−1 ionic strength. The predominant species detected for Pb(II) and Cd(II) are ML2H4, ML2H3, ML2H2, ML2H, and ML2 and those for Hg(II) are ML2H4, ML2H3, ML2, and ML. The appropriateness of experimental conditions is verified by introducing errors intentionally in the concentrations of ingredients. The models containing different numbers of species were refined by using the computer program MINIQUAD75. The best-fit chemical models were arrived at based on statistical parameters. The trend in variation of stability constants of the complexes with dielectric constant of the medium is attributed to the electrostatic and nonelectrostatic forces. The species distribution and the plausible equilibria for the formation of the species are also presented.

This study reports experimental data taken with a hydraulic energy regeneration system and compares the measured data with analytical results. The system tested consisted of two foam-filled hydraulic accumulators, a variable-displacement piston-type pump/motor, a reservoir and a flywheel. During a series of experiments, energy was repeatedly transferred between the hydraulic accumulators and the flywheel through the pump/motor. Computed system variables compared favorably with the experimental results. At high and moderate pump/motor swivel angles, the round-trip efficiency varied from 61 to 89 percent. It was significantly lower at small angles.

There was, apparently, no occupational or accidental exposure to toxic substances and a correct diagnosis of the condition had not been possible. The computer-aided program AIDEDIAG II was therefore used to attempt a diagnosis. This approach indicated possible saturnism which was confirmed by metabolic and lead analyses. The lead source was identified as the hand-made food-plates used by the patient for his meals.

Résumé :
Introduction and Aim: The technology enhanced education programs are efficient than traditional passive learning methodologies with respect to learning gains and knowledge retention, thereby reinforcing positive habits in students of all ages. The present study was designed to develop a computer assisted digital educational program on ill effects of tobacco and to assess the impactof this methodology over traditional classroom based anti-tobacco awareness program. Materials and Methods:Two types of anti-tobacco awareness programs namely, computer assisted and conventional teaching, were administered to school childrenof teen age and successivelyknowledge retention, the attitude and behaviour towards tobacco were assessed through a structured questionnaire. Assessment was done on two occasions: subsequent to the training program (Phase I), six months after the program (Phase II). The results were compared usingindependent ‘t’ test and paired ‘t’ test. P < 0.05 was consideredstatistically significant. Results:The students who received the computer-assistedtraining had a significantly higher cognitive learning outcome, both short term and long term and presented a significantly more positive attitude towards tobacco prevention (p < 0.05). However, no significant difference was noted in behaviour. Different parameters within Group 1 and 2, in phase I and phase II remained without significant difference (p> 0.05). A very strong positive correlation between knowledge and attitude was noted among participants of computer-assisted program. Conclusion:Computer assisted anti-tobacco awareness program is better in terms of short term and long term knowledge retention in comparison to conventional classroom based learning program. Also long-term knowledge retention seems to have increased the concern about tobacco, which would have modified their behaviour towards engaging in protective practices.

Résumé :
SummaryThe ONCOCIN Interviewer program provides a graphical interface between physicians and an expert system that is designed to assist with therapy selection for patients receiving experimental cancer therapy. A principal goal has been to increase acceptance of advanced computer tools in a clinical setting. The interface has been developed for high-performance Lisp workstations and is tailored to the existing paper forms and practices of the outpatient clinic. To be flexible, the program makes use of a document formatting language to control a raster graphics display of medical forms, traditional paper versions of which have been used to track patient progress. The program utilizes a mouse input device coupled with a software-defined data entry approach that may be customized to the specific environment. The work described suggests ways in which high density graphics interfaces, with pointing devices rather than an emphasis on keyboards, may make decision support tools more useful to physicians and more acceptable to them.

Résumé :
The thermal characteristics of energy recovery incinerators are examined, both parametrically and, to the extent possible, by direct comparison. A mathematic model is employed, using a computer program to solve the governing equations. Three energy recovery configurations are considered: a water tube heat exchanger downstream from the combustion chambers, waterwalls, and a combination of the two. Results show the advantages of combining water walls and a convection boiler.

Résumé :
Labyrinth seals are used in various kinds of turbo machines to reduce internal leakage flow. The working fluid, or the gas passing through the rotor shaft labyrinth seals, often generates driving force components that may increase the unstable vibration of the rotor. It is important to know the accurate rotordynamic force components for predicting the instability of the rotor-bearing-seal system. The major goals of this research were to calculate the rotordynamic force of a labyrinth seals utilizing a commercial CFD program and to further compare those results to an existing bulk flow computer program currently used by major US machinery manufacturers. The labyrinth seals of a steam turbine and a compressor eye seal are taken as objects of analysis. For each case, a 3D model with eccentric rotor was solved to obtain the rotordynamic force components. The leakage flow and rotor dynamics force predicted by CFX TASCFlow are compared with the results of the existing bulk flow analysis program DYNLAB. The results show that the bulk flow program gives a pessimistic prediction of the destabilizing forces for the conditions under investigation. Further research work will be required to fully understand the complex leakage flows in turbo machinery.

Résumé :
The Pratt & Whitney and Northrop companies together, under the Air Force Wright Research and Development Center (WRDC) sponsored Integrated Reliable Fault-Tolerant Control for Large Engines (INTERFACE II) Program [1, 2], designed and demonstrated an advanced real-time Integrated Flight and Propulsion Control (IFPC) system. This IFPC system was based upon the development of physically distinctive, functionally integrated, flight and propulsion controls that managed the Northrop twin engine, statically unstable, P700 airplane. Digital flight control and digital engine control hardware were combined with cockpit control hardware and computer simulations of the airplane and engines to provide a real-time, closed-loop, piloted IFPC system. As part of a follow-on effort, lessons learned during the INTERFACE II program are being applied to the design of a flight critical propulsion control system. This paper will present both the results of the INTERFACE II IFPC program and approaches toward definition and development of an integrated propulsion control system for flight critical applications.

Résumé :
The main objective of the present study is to conduct an experiment to analyze the variation of protonation-deprotonation equilibria with regards to the dielectric constants of an organic medium, influence of errors on protonation constants and effect of pH chemical species distribution. The present investigation was carried out by using pH meter, processing of data was done by Gran titration. To obtain best fit chemical models, a modelling strategy such as SCPHD was used and a computer program was used for the refinement of results. In the present study, we studied the influence of dielectric constants of a medium DMSO on stability constants of Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) with 5-hydroxysalicylic acid (5-HSA). The species distribution diagrams were presented. The metal-ligand equilibria of the ligands revealed the calculated statistical parameters such as χ2, skewness, kurtosis and R-factor. Significant influence of co-solvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-Water mixtures on the stability constants of metal-ligand complexes was observed.

Résumé :
This paper presents a three-dimensional quasi-static analysis of continuous or jointed pipelines. Transfer Matrix Method was applied to the analysis providing for nonlinear behaviors of joints and soil frictions. An improved computer program ERAUL-II (Earthquake Response Analysis of Underground Lifelines-II) was developed for numerical computations. First, numerical response analyses were carried out for three-dimensional pipe systems with steel or cast iron pipe materials subject to large ground deformations or seismic ground motions. Analytical results show that torsional properties of pipes are also important factors for seismic behavior, which cannot be known by two-dimensional analyses. Second, experimental test data of three-dimensional steel pipe systems were simulated by using the ERAUL-II program. Simulated results agree well with the experimental values.

Résumé :
The purpose of this paper is to assess whether the national program on beef self sufficiency could be achieved at 2014. A dynamic system model with Vensim computer program is applied. The model validated by Mean Absolute Percentage Error. The results shows high accuracies of the model. The assessment show that, first, the beef self sufficiency would not be achieved at 2014 if the program are treated and running as usual (Scenario I). Second, the beef self sufficiency would be achieved at 2015 if government increase the cow population by reducing the slaughter of local cows and expanding the cross breeding program through artificial insemination (Scenario II). Third, the beef self sufficiency would not be achieved at 2014 if the actual beef consumption are higher than the supply that produce through Scenario II (Scenario III). Another innovative solution for increasing local cow population is needed.
