Texte intégralHow can a former city-centre which, a century ago, made up the greater part of the city and which still remains densely populated, partake of the dynamism of a modern city while retaining the essential elements of its composition ? this question synthesises the problematics and serves as the main theme of this thesis which presents the attempts at co-existence between a historic centre, classified as a world heritage site, and an urban area which has stayed very active. The first section sets out the factual and socio-geographical situation at the crucial periods of the 20th century which have marked this evolution. 1908, first of all, which is noteworthy for the opening up of the sierra with the arrival of the coastal railway and the major drainage works which marked quito's entry into modem times. Then 1946 which saw the start of the application of the regulating plan for quito and on which the organisation of a large part of the urban area still depends today. After this evocation, there follow descriptions of the situation, permanence and role of the old city which today is merely the historic centre of a capital keen to modernize. It is at this stage that are discussed the vocation and the specific activities of the city centre within the framework of the life of the city in 1996. A second section is more closely concerned with the activities of the historic centre and life in its various neighbourhoods. It is based on a large number of fieldsurveys and dwells more specifically on the history and everyday life of two residential areas : la loma and san juan. Finally, a third section deals with the heritage of the historic centre, seen in terms of the various institutional actions which have led to its being taken in hand and restored ; it also treats of the way in which the inhabitants of quito see these actions. The study concludes with the pronouncements of those responsible for the restoration programme for the old city, and a analysis of them
Estrada, Federico. « Pouvoirs publics, commerce informel et marché du travail : étude de cas sur les transformations du centre historique à Guatemala-Ville ». Paris, EHESS, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012EHES0098.
Texte intégralThis doctoral study of informal merchants of the historical zone of Guatemala City was intended to comprehend their social and political organization. The analyses were achieved from three different perspectives: the public administration and its influence over the phenomenon; the social organizational logics and the political expressions being produced. It is a qualitative thesis accomplished between 2006 and 2011. The main informants represent two different groups: merchants and employees from the Guatemala City municipality. The analysis revealed that public policies from the municipality are strategically modifying the public space in order to confront the groups that occupy the zone. This type of commerce is erasing the borders of informal and formal, creating a non regular but stable activity. Local and traditional logics are fractioning the space and the political claims. The political movement is still structuring itself and it depends on the municipality. Analyzing the social representations, we prove the modifications of contents given to the category “labor”, herby the flexibility attached to the shape and sense of labor. At the conclusions, three mayor questions arise for continuing the research on informal sectors: Given a frame of a weak Guatemalan State, which are the remaining capacities of the public sphere to intervene the social orders? What are the upcoming effects of the fusing between formal and informal sectors? What type of society could it be created from these emerging new local regulations? And what are the political criteria of the urban renewal project?
Parra, Johanna. « Le business : une forme sociale mexicaine : ethnographie d'un marché de textile et confection au centre historique de la ville de Mexico ». Paris, EHESS, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015EHES0158.
Texte intégralThe purpose of this dissertation is the understanding of the reasoning, behaviors and actions, of some specific Mexican traders of the Historical Center of Mexico City, that develop informal and illegal commercial activities, such as sales in public spaces, piracy or smuggling. I have therefore to introduce to the sociological concept of business. It will help for the explanation of the effective case studies which I made ethnography with extensive fieldwork between 2005 and 2008 of these Mexican trading areas and populations. The understanding of this concept is very important because it constitutes the interpretation key of the ethnography. The sociology of business is not only descriptive but has also deep inspiration based on a central question related to the Latin American societies where we live. As are used to do the anthropologists, I focused on a particular case, but I never stopped thinking in general questions on the becoming of other cases. The invention of this concept has the motivation, although studying a particular fieldwork, to interrogate on other similar cases. This is why this work although the continuous ethnographic characteristic of this dissertation, has never stopped holding a general sociological perspective. The business is the way I call all along the text, a mixed set of rational instrumental economic action which seeks to set up a trade, a sale, a profit, with behaviors orientated to norms which obey to parentage, obedience and legitimacies which trace family, community and paternalistic aspects to the social groups I studied. Around business, are tied together great social and political sectors giving birth to a social form in which the exercise of business determine the structures of social control, of security, so to the group and community norms that regulate, arrange and impose their hierarchies : they form a social form. The individuals of this social group have economic motivations searching for the optimization of their profit and motivations for subsistence, their motivations to follow the rules of the family group, motivations for exploitation of family and community networks. We should say that they have multiple motivations, there is not a motivation for the business, but a crossroad of motivations between trades and subsistence, group norms and instrumental self motivated behavior. The constant characteristics of these motivations are the flexible and malleable adaptation according to the circumstances that the situations proposed to them. It deals with a complex and sophisticated « resourcefulness » in constant change, in a constant process of definition, redefinition and re-elaboration. The social form of the business is based on the economic, political and states-related structures. They are dealing in complicity with local powers and bring around to the different social organizations and the local leaderships develop a fundamental role in the Mexican social functioning

Texte intégralImproving the energy efficiency of buildings and mitigating the urban heat island is a priority, particularly in historical city centres, which are composed of poorly insulated buildings. One of the levers of action envisaged is wall insulation. However, the retrofit of old walls faces numerous obstacles (technological, architectural, urban). In particular, these walls have a specific hygrothermal behavior, which needs to be taken into account to avoid the appearance of pathologies and to correctly estimate energy losses. It is therefore essential to integrate hygrothermal transfers through the walls to effectively simulate old buildings. However, most urban-scale models neglect moisture transfer through walls. This thesis proposes a new numerical method for solving hygrothermal transfers, which is adapted to the various constraints of urban-scale modeling (spatio-temporal resolutions, numerical method, etc.). Validation is carried out in two steps: a numerical part and an experimental part. Numerical validation is based on an inter-model comparison, using fifteen wall compositions and three climates. Experimental validation uses data recorded in several buildings retrofitted with bio-based materials and instrumented in the medieval city centre of Cahors. Then, coupled heat and mass transfer through walls are integrated into the TEB (Town Energy Balance) urban climate model, using the developed and validated method. The suitability of this new version of TEB to represent the medieval town center of Cahors is assessed by comparison with in-situ measurement. A significant improvement is observed when simulating indoor relative humidity. The impact of moisture transfer is discussed at several scales. Finally, the retrofit of the old walls of buildings in the city center of Cahors is studied using several types of thermal insulation positioned inside or outside. These retrofitting scenarios are simulated with the modified version of TEB, including moisture transfer through the walls. Their relevance is compared with regard to energy issues, indoor and outoor comfort, heritage conservation and wall durability. Recommendations are given according to the type of wall

Texte intégralA comparative study between the historic places of cities of Joao Pessoa, Brazil, and Tours, France was conducted. Our aim was to understand how these historic places are perceived by people, especially by the inhabitants. The study also aims to understand the value that the people will attribute to old buildings after his rehabilitation, related to the enhancement of cultural heritage, which functions as lifting axis of urban policies. An ethnographic analyses shows that both realities reveal not only differences but also similarities
