Résumé :
Bibliography: leaves 108-113.
The study investigates the problem of recidivism amongst male trial-awaiting youth detained at Bosasa's Dyambu Youth Centre (DYC), to determine whether their experiences with the variables under investigation have in any way influenced them to consider changes in their attitudes towards criminal behaviour. The research design in this study followed both quantitative and qualitative methodological orientations .An interview schedule was constructed in advance and applied in a standardised manner and was administered by the researcher, face to face with each respondent. Data were analysed and presented both quantitatively and qualitatively. Findings in this study revealed that financial gain, drug addiction and peer pressure were the major driving forces and motivating factors that influenced the respondents to become repeatedly involved in criminal behaviour. Lack of a stable source of income, denial of re-admission at school, rejection by family and friends and lack of stable home and accommodation were some of the major factors that made reintegration into the community difficult for the respondents during the period after their previous release. The findings in this study point to inadequacy of services with regard to prevention of crime and recidivism amongst juvenile offenders. Re-integration and after-care services were identified as an area that is grossly neglected in the field of probation and in social work services generally. Nearly all the respondents reported that they would like to abandon their criminal lifestyle but the situations that they face and various other factors highlighted in the study drive them to crime. The predominant factors identified by the respondents as influential in encouraging abandonment of criminal activities include: a fear of heavy criminal record, disgracing the family, the acquisition of various skills and knowledge from DYC workshops and classes; and their own individual thinking.

Résumé :
The overall aim of the study was to explore factors that could be associated with criminal behaviour of youth offenders diverted in the life skills residential diversion programmes at Walter Sisulu Child and Youth Care Centre, so as to contribute towards a better understanding of their profile. Therefore the study explored the participants' family backgrounds, the circumstances surrounding the committal of their offences and their responses to the offences they were diverted for in the life skills diversion programmes. An exploratory-descriptive type of a qualitative design was adopted in this study. A semistructured interview schedule was used as the research instrument for conducting in-depth face-to-face interviews with the participants. The study had one set of target population; who were 18 youth offenders (both male and female) between the ages 14-17 attending life skills residential diversion programmes at Walter Sisulu Child and Youth Care Centre. The profile of the participants seem to indicate that most of them had absent fathers and therefore lacked male figures who could act as role models. The study found that biological fathers of most participants were either deceased, whereabouts unknown, not involved in their financial maintenance or those who had stepfathers, had a bad relationship with them. The findings indicated that the participants' mothers were unavailable and therefore most participants were taken care of by their grandmothers. However, it seems most grandmothers often failed to supervise their grandchildren properly and as such it created an opportunity for the participants to be mischievous with no consequences for their behaviour. It was also found that violence in the family also contributed significantly to the aggressive criminal offences of some of the participants. Lastly, the study showed that the influence of drugs and negative peer pressure also played a significant role in the participants' involvement in criminal behaviour.

Fredericks, Chanel. « An exploratory study of the experiences of youth transitioning out of Child and Youth Care Centres in Cape Town to independent adult living ». Master's thesis, Faculty of Humanities, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/31295.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Every year youth living in child and youth care centres (CYCCs) in Cape Town prepare themselves for independent adult living as they approach the age of majority, eighteen years of age, which enables them to legally leave state care. This research study explored the experiences of Cape Town youth transitioning from CYCCs to independent adult living. The study was conducted with a sample of twenty youth from five different CYCCs in Cape Town, South Africa. The study adopted a qualitative approach using a semi-structured interview schedule for face-to-face interviews with the participants. A purposive sample was used for the selection of participants for this study. Data collected during this study was analysed using Tesch’s eight-step approach to data analysis. The study findings revealed that participants had various perceptions regarding their transition from their CYCCs to independent adult living. Some perceived their exit from state care as a disturbance in their lives which resulted in them experiencing a range of emotions such as fear and anxiety as they anticipated how their lives would change once they leave state care. Others recognised that during this time they would experience some independence which meant taking on more responsibility for their lives such as being accountable for their daily living costs which include groceries, electricity and transport. Participants also viewed this transitional period as a time to actively look for alternative accommodation before leaving state care to avoid potential homelessness. Living in care was also understood as an opportunity for youth to successfully complete their high schooling without any disruptions. In addition to this the study findings revealed that participants had aspirations that they hoped to see come to fruition while they prepare for independent adult living. These included making contact with their families of origin, enrolling into tertiary institutions, finding employment and helping others in need. They also foresaw challenges that may arise while they prepared for independent adult living. These challenges included repetition of negative past behaviours, struggling to find employment, worries about safety, worries about not having support after leaving care and possible financial challenges. The study findings also revealed how youth living in CYCCs can be better supported during their transition to independent adult living. This can occur through improving existing transitional programmes, assigning youth living in CYCCs with mentors during their transitional period and improving the government’s role in supporting CYCCs and youth leaving care by, amongst other things, creating more employment opportunities for youth. The main recommendations of the study include that CYCCs provide youth preparing to leave care for independent adult living with the necessary emotional support such as individual counselling sessions where they can disclose and deal with their fears and anxieties about leaving state care. It is also recommended that CYCCs continue to push their education agenda with youth preparing to leave state care so that they can continue to be ambitious when it comes to furthering their education. Another recommendation is that CYCCs readily support youth wanting to make contact with their family of origin during their transition to independent adult living. Finally, children living in CYCCs should be introduced to transitional programmes soon after their entrance into the CYCC programme rather than too close to their exit from state care.

Aluha, Roselidah Anyango. « Evaluation of the food service for adolescent boys in Mogale Child and Youth Care Centre in Gauteng, South Africa, 2012 ». Diss., University of Pretoria, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/43670.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The study was carried out at the Mogale Child and Youth Care Centre (MCYCC) a privately run institution by Bosasa Operations in partnership with the Gauteng Provincial Departments of Social Development and Health and Social Welfare Department. The facility caters for boys in conflict with law aged 14–18 years, who have been legally placed in the facility as a place of safety by court order. It is expected that the findings and recommendations from this study will be useful in improving the food service standards for such institutions. At the time of this study there were 200 adolescents, 137 were awaiting trial, 55 on the diversion programmes and 8 were serving court sentence at the centre. The cross sectional study evaluated the food service offered at the MCYCC to establish the nutritional adequacy of the food served. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were used to collect and analyse data. Out of the 200, 144 answered the customer satisfaction questionnaire and 167 took the BMI test. Observations were done in the kitchen to determine the compliance level to the food and safety regulations. The analytical results of the responses from the self-administered questionnaire on the customer service satisfaction generated by the SAS software revealed reliable results. The probability, (p-value) from the Chi-square (χ2) test showed that there was a significant difference in response the parameters tested including the overall satisfaction. Body Mass Index (BMI) calculations established different anthropometric patterns of which 1.3% adolescents were found to be obese, 28.2% were overweight, 57% had normal weight while 13.5% were found to be underweight. The Foodfinder 3 software used to evaluate the nutrient composition in a 2-week cycle menu revealed that in most cases both the macronutrients and micronutrients in the menus exceeded the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for the adolescent boys. Food safety and hygiene standards results showed that the unit is compliant with the required standards as it scored 86%; it was colour coded Silver and rated as very good. All the parameters evaluated scored above average percentage rating the customer satisfaction level for the services offered at the MCYCC are as good. Both underweight and overweight adolescents exist among the adolescents at the centre. The weights from the sample food plates exceeded the RDA of the adolescent boys. The centre’s compliance to health and safety regulations was rated as very good. The authorities in the Gauteng Provincial Departments of Social Development and Health and Social Welfare and Bosasa operation management should make use of this evident information to further improve the food service standards for other such institutions.

Résumé :
Cycling is a sport of opposites. The mechanisms that comprise a bicycle are beautifully simple and work in perfect harmony to produce a graceful and efficient means of transportation. Additionally, cycling is a rigorous form of full-body exercise that has a relatively low-impact on the body’s bones and joints. Most importantly cycling tears down boundaries, it forces the rider to notice his surroundings and be aware of those around him. Cycling builds community and allows for interactions, both between riders and between rider and place. Juxtaposed against the simplicity and elegance of the bicycle, is the complexity and corruption of the sport. In recent years, cycling has been marred by scandal, fraud, and greed. The sport, on an international scale, has shifted away from friendly competition and community building to racketeering and marketing. In contrast to the wealth associated with the sport, stands the fact that participation in cycling can be prohibitively expensive. In an effort to overcome this obstacle, organizations like the Richmond Cycling Corps (RCC) are attempting to grow the popularity of the sport by introducing it to Richmond’s underserved youth. The RCC is a non-profit organization whose chief goal is to increase exposure to the sport in an effort to promote the development of healthy lifestyle choices for Richmond’s youth. By doing so, the RCC strives to build stronger, more connected communities. Using the program and mission statement of the Richmond Cycling Corps as a starting point, this project seeks to develop a space that promotes emotional and physical growth using cycling as the method of delivery.

Résumé :
Antisocial behavior in adolescence could be influenced by multiple factors. Developmental psychology and criminology mostly evaluated the influence of family, social, individual and environmental characteristics in aggressive and antisocial conduct. The tendency to assume such attitudes is widespread in adolescence and sometimes predicts delinquency. In Italy it is estimated that seven teenagers (14-18 years old) out of ten commit crimes and are involved in criminal justice system. The most diffuse offences among youths are property crimes and violent crimes, often related to a specific background of belonging. Nevertheless, not all adolescents behave in a transgressive or antisocial way, and not all young people involved in justice have the same characteristics. This dissertation aims to provide a general overview on juvenile criminality in Italy. It is divided in three chapters. The first part shows the main multifactorial theories of crime; the second part illustrates the types of crimes, life condition in Youth Detention Centers and the social rehabilitation programs adopted to prevent recidivism. Finally, the last part is dedicated to the research, divided in three studies: (1) analyzes the background of youths justice involved and their life condition in Youth Detention Centers; (2) investigates the influence of family factors in aggressive and antisocial conducts of high schools adolescents; (3) compares risk and protective factors of two groups: high school students and youths involved in criminal justice system, in order to investigate similitudes and differences and to promote interventions and prevention programs.

This dissertation aims to analyze the process of creation and development of the Cultural Center for Youth Ruth Cardoso (Centro Cultural para a Juventude Ruth Cardoso, CCJ) and the impact caused by the actions of the CCJ in the community, particularly among its target audience, using in this reflection the concepts of \"cultural development\" and \"cultural rights\". The CCJ was established in 2006 in order to meet the demands of the young residents of the regions of Brasilândia, Cachoeirinha, Freguesia do Ó and of the city of São Paulo as a whole. The CCJ involved the creation of differentiated cultural facilities, focusing on the population aged 18 to 29 years, the general public that is not the main focus of the other facilities maintained by the Municipal Government of São Paulo. We analyze initially the relationship between culture and cities, focusing specially on the presence and distribution of cultural facilities within the Department of Culture (Secretaria de Cultura) of São Paulo, in order to achieve an overview of the characteristics of each of them. Subsequently we present the history of the CCJ, its creation, its networks, objectives and operation. These information were obtained from testimonies collected from the managers of the CCJ, documents and observation. Afterwards we make a discussion on the concept of youth and its expectations, and finally we deal with the analysis of the interviews applied to users of the CCJ, checking its characteristics, the uses of the facilities, and the evaluation of satisfaction, which indicates changes in the cultural profile of these young people in relation to their attendance of the CCJ. The results showed that differentiated cultural spaces and decentralization contribute effectively to the cultural development of its public and to the democratization of the access to cultural goods.

Résumé :
There are many programs throughout the world and in the state of Virginia that have been developed to change the outlook of youth on a broader spectrum. Youth in at risk communities face a different set of parameters and are often mislabeled as "bad kids". Many of these youth simply need an environment filled with positive energy. This redesign will create an environment that guides through intuition and the understanding of angles and markers that are considered universal in all languages. The space will open up a world that is non-institutional and without the normal boundaries and pressures of typical grading system. The education center will cultivate healthy habits for learning that can carry them on to community colleges, universities and the eventually the workforce.

Résumé :
The dissertation’s aim is to highlight the presence of young people in the Central Business District of Pretoria, Tshwane. The proposal aims to provide a facility to entertain the youth in the city while waiting for transport before or after school. An in depth analysis done on the Central Business District (CBD) of Pretoria revealed that there are currently 13 schools, as well as, several Further Education and Training Facilities (FET) in the CBD. These children and students form a huge sector of the population that is currently not catered for in term of entertainment. The project is located in the south eastern quadrant of the CBD, as this is where most of the schools and FET’s are located. The facility will comprise of various child and student based activities and facilities that they can engage in before and after class or school. These include indoor and outdoor activity spaces as well as commercial enterprises. All the facilities are arranged around a central courtyard space where unprogrammed activities may occur. The facility will also incorporate a small transportation node consisting of Taxi’s and Municipal busses. This will reduce the need for children to walk extensive distances between their after school activities and their modes of transportation. As the title ‘Game On’ suggests the dissertation aims to investigate games in both their architectural structure and narrative. Furthermore, the aim is to utilize the design principals and narrative found in games during the design process and using them to determine the hierarchal organization of spaces found at the centre. As in a game, design is a process that follows a narrative as determined by a set of rules and limitations. The imposed restrictions on the design may result in an unsuccessful attempt to overcome it. In games this phenomenon can be seen as reaching a level of difficulty. The player then needs to start over in order re-evaluate the situation or to gain the skills necessary for advancing to the next level. The process of design should be approached in a similar way. When a problem is reached the design should be re-evaluated and the necessary exploration should be done in order to solve to problem. Ultimately the process of design may be compared to the playing of a game, it has to adhere to rules and regulations and what is technically possible. The end product (architecture) can be engaging and may allow the user to interact with their surroundings like in a video game.

Résumé :
Thesis (MPhil (Sustainable Development Planning and Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
This research explores spaces for enchantment and the unknown, exploring our relationship to fairy-tales and alternative ways of dreaming that break from a modern worldview, using complexity thinking as lens. I conducted extra-mural group work with two groups of adolescents from disadvantaged backgrounds. I considered the world young people receive at a metaphysical level; the world they dream of, connect to and enact. My thesis is based on the premise that we must act towards a ‘sustainable unknown development’ that goes beyond modern deadly homogenisation. The research objectives were as follows: Firstly, to explore the relationship between dreams (about the future) and a sustainable future. Secondly, to reflect, based on the group’s holding-space, on our relationship to dreams. Thirdly, to reflect on possible alternative ways of approaching the unknown and enacting enchantment to create change. Fourthly, to explore the importance of imagination and creativity with regards to the above. I review literature pertaining to the affects of the modern paradigm, specifically in its fairy tale blueprinting form, on our world. I argue that this paradigm is currently dangerous to the earth as a living system; causing the oppression and abandonment of nature, the feminine, children and our imagination. Alternative ways such as states of ‘interbeing’, polycentric thinking, and the experience of thresholds and heterotopian spaces where differences meet, are considered. The importance of personal experience and imagination in building resilience and meaning in the unknown are emphasised. My research uses a practical design of ‘enchantment methodology’. Methodologically it tries to tackle some ontological questions, considering different approaches in which negotiation is possible at a metaphysical level. My findings were that although alternative approaches do exist they cannot be generalised in a modern thinking way. Beyond the modern numbness and the tantrums of breaking away from its devastating divides, is the potential of inner wisdom found in our own hearts. Recommendations are that more holding spaces are created to promote an alternative relationship to the unknown to nurture a sense of enchantment.

Résumé :
Starting in the everyday life of Söderhamn’s youth, this thesis presents the driving forces that affect youth as they make decisions to stay in or to leave their home region. The research has been done with an interactive approach in close collaboration with youth and adults, and a number of different methods have been used. Based on the interviews, essays, questionnaires, conversations and meetings that underlie this work, the ambition has been to participate and contribute to the formation of knowledge in dialog with the youth and the adults who surround them. The dissertation (thesis) shows that society’s basic structures have great influence on youth’s decision whether to stay or leave. Important factors are actual circumstances, such as the access that youth have to resources – economical, social, and cultural. Society’s gender order has a big impact on the question whether to move or stay. Likewise, the tension between center and periphery plays an essential role – where the power to define what is “right” and “natural” coincides with values on how youth “are” and “should be”. The dissertation (thesis) shows that the interplay between these factors appears different for different individuals and groups, and that the interplay has significance both for the move/stay –decision and for the youth’s desire and possibility to participate in and have influence over society’s development in the region.

Shopping centres have become part of the daily lives of the urban citizens. Going to shopping centres for dining, shopping, entertainment activities is commonly observed among normal families and individuals of all ages in Hong Kong. How do people choose the shopping centre they are going to visit? What are the factors that affect the choice of shopping centres for visit? Youth, being the most active group for the retail market, and also the frequent visitors of shopping centres, plays a relatively more important role than other customers. It is worth to have a study for youth’s preferences for shopping centres. This study focuses on the youth who are aged from 18 to 30. In order to get their opinions about the factors affecting their choices in visiting shopping centres, a questionnaire survey was conducted. After the analysis of the views obtained, it was noticed that a good location, mature transportation, variety of shops, tenant mix, as well as entertainment features are the most important factors that the youth in Hong Kong would consider when they are choosing shopping centres. Among those factors, location was chosen as the most important determinant that the youth would consider in choosing shopping centres for visiting. It is suggested that the landlords, management agents and business operators of shopping centres should take these factors into account and have to consider those when they plan, develop, manage, and promote their shopping centres.

Shaikh, Majidullah. « Youth Leadership in a Physical Activity-Based Positive Youth Development Program for At-Risk Youth ». Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/36591.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Physical activity-based positive youth development (PA-PYD) programs can serve to empower and alleviate barriers to development for at-risk youth. Youth leaders may play an important role in these programs to foster the development of their younger peers, while mutually benefiting from the program as they foster and apply skills such as leadership, communication, and self-direction. Currently, there is a gap in literature as very few studies have examined youth leadership within PA-PYD programming. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to explore the perspectives and experiences of youth leaders and their fellow program participants in relation to youth leadership within the context of a PA-PYD program for at-risk youth. Data were gathered from 16 youth leaders (Mage= 13.37, SD = 1.36) and 15 program participants (Mage= 10.53, SD = 1.12) across four different program locations, using semi-structured, one-on-one interviews. This thesis is composed of two articles. The first article used a deductive-inductive thematic analysis to better understand the experiences that youth leaders had in the program. Three themes were identified: (a) building youth leaders is a process, (b) mentorship is perceived as critical for one’s leadership development, (c) trust is important for enhancing youth leader engagement. The second article also used a deductive-inductive thematic analysis to examine how youth leaders perceive the influence they have on younger peers who participate in the physical activity-based youth development program, as well as how these program participants perceive the role and impact of the youth leaders. Five themes emerged from the analysis, which were: (a) learning and building skills, (b) receiving support, (c) enjoyment, (d) relatability, and (e) lack of maturity. This research contributes to current gaps in the literature on youth leadership within physical activity-based youth programming and provides practical recommendations to improve such programming.

Interest in youth civic engagement continues to increase and a small but growing group of organizations are seeking to get young people involved in political activism. At the same time, researchers are giving more attention to the features of adolescent settings and how they relate to the overall development of young people. What remains to be absent is a contextual understanding of how the characteristics of adolescent settings contribute specifically to political development. The purpose of this study is to identify organizational level characteristics of youth organizations that promote the political development of adolescents. Semi-structured interviews and grounded theory analysis with 15 young activists revealed a “Big Six” of organizational characteristics and properties that influence participation in societal involvement behaviors. Post hoc analyses also revealed potential relationships between political development and the Big Six. Implications for both theory and practice are discussed and directions for future research are delineated.

Résumé :
Skövde Kulturhus is a cultural centre in Skövde that have been remodelled to incorporate new areas and to improve the old ones. The centre has different locals where different activities can be performed such as watching movies and theatre plays, dance, etc. In the art gallery, one of the new areas is the workshop, and for this, new furniture is needed. During the project, a set of a table and chairs have been developed for the workshop, following some specifications, set by the personnel of the Cultural Centre and by the conclusion from the different investigations. This report covers the whole process from the different researches to the evaluation and the development of the final concepts; it follows a modification of the Cyclic Strategy Method process, which includes the research and different design tools to create the concepts, as morphological chart, braindrawing and a study of the form. User studies have been made to get a good understanding of the way a person uses this furniture using surveys; ergonomics research has been made to design furniture for all kind of people; and market research have been made to discovered what kind of furniture is usually used. All these researches have been investigated to create the optimal table and chair for the activities done at the Centre. The final solutions, which have been evaluated against other concepts, are a wooden table, whose design and modular form permits to join other tables to work in teams; and a wooden chair, which have been designed for different people size. Both would fulfil the requirements and fit in the new cultural centre.

Résumé :
Despite theoretical and policy advancements in global human and gendered approaches to development, youth in mainstream development policy discourse remains subsumed. The ratification of global best practice models of human development in Nigeria, without contextualizing the probable dividends of youth capability strength in shaping national development realities, will present challenges that are likely to threaten the sustainable future of country. Perhaps if this is sustained, this thesis argues that the capabilities of Nigerian youths will continue to remain trapped or mismatched in areas that they fail to contribute positively to Nigeria's national development. In this regard, this thesis evaluated the extent to which youth capabilities are enhanced in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for national development in Nigeria. Firstly, this thesis contributes conceptually to understanding, broadly, the social constructions of youth in mainstream policy discourse and their positioning in both global and national development practice in Nigeria. It also critically examines through literature how western epistemological interpretations of development theorizing are reproduced in youth discourse. Succinctly, the theoretical contribution of youth in development explains how development-underdevelopment dualism in mainstream development reproduces similar youth-adult dualisms in conceptualizing how youths are recognized, represented and constituted within policy discourses. Based on this, the theoretical gaps that this thesis bridges, operationalizes the Sen's capability approach (SCA) through the utilization of Narayan-Parker's empowerment framework in order to contextualize how the intersections of youth agency and structural contributions of the NYSC could aid the effective utilization of youth capabilities for national development in Nigeria. Secondly, this thesis contributes methodologically to development practice as it adapts a mixed-method approach (MMA) to researching youth lives, especially from a developing country's context. The application of a qualitative dominant mixed method approach (qual-MMA), suggests how through social constructivist ontology and through poststructuralist epistemology, the understanding of how youths socially construct their identity and the roles they play in national development becomes clearer. Thirdly, the germane and empirical contribution of this thesis especially to mainstream development theorizing is that, youth voices captured through narratives and quantitative data helped explore the experiences of Nigerian youth's transition pathways from education to the NYSC pathway. This further allowed for critical examination of how youths are: absorbed through mobilization into the NYSC; developed through the activities in the scheme; deployed and utilized in addressing national development challenges in Nigeria. This thesis suggests that dominant social constructions based on age and transition patterns, undermine the impact/effective functioning of youth capabilities for addressing national development challenges. It concludes that limited support structures during the youth educational pathways and lack of opportunity structures while youths are in the NYSC pathways continue to limit the functioning of their capabilities in sectors of national development needs. It recommends a need to rethink the current deployment strategy of the NYSC so that youth capabilities fit the national development narrative.

Van, Tonder Rene. « An exploration of the female adolescent learner-educator interaction within the youth care centre ». Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/20863.

Résumé :
Thesis (MEd)--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The study aims to explore and describe the Youth Care learner's relational interaction with her educators in order to establish what could enhance this relationship with her educators. The specific focus is on the female Youth Care learners' experiences of this relationship and how they impact on the learners' sense of well-being within a particular Youth Care Centre. The participants for this study consisted of eight female learners from the Youth Care Centre. The research methods which were used are semi-structured interviews with each participant. I also conducted focus groups with educators which resulted in confirmation of data. The analysis of the interview guides' data provided themes which are discussed according to certain categories that emerged in the data produced during the interviews. The study shows that various factors such as lack of empathy, trust, respect and understanding impact on the educator-learner relationship within a Youth Care Centre. These factors directly impact on Youth Care learners' well-being. The study shows that the presence of these factors could be used to decrease the number of Youth Care learners who have sad or hopeless feelings. The Youth Care learners also made suggestions on how this relationship with their educators could be enhanced. Thus, it can be concluded that Youth Care educators who possess superior competency in the different realms of emotional skills have many advantages that lead to mutually satisfying and responsible interpersonal relationships. This research therefore calls for a greater focus on the development of the emotional skills of Youth Care educators, which could lead to better interactions with their learners. I conclude by suggesting that further studies be conducted to assess the emotional skills of Youth Care educators and to determine in which realm they need improvement.

Bibliography: leaves 82-84.
The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Young People at Risk (IMC) undertook a comprehensive analysis of the Child and Youth Care system, including the Juvenile Justice system in South Africa and made recommendations for transformation thereof. Various transformation initiatives in the Child and Youth Care System stimulated the researcher's interest in the progress of the implementation of transformation policies. In particular the policies related to the Juvenile Justice system at the Cape Town Juvenile Justice Assessment Centre were of interest to the researcher. Services and legislation governing youth in conflict with the law was fragmented. New legislation was needed that incorporated national and international instruments to protect the rights of children and to regulate the juvenile justice system. Since the establishment of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Young People at Risk (IMC) in 1996, various documents, policies, discussion papers and draft legislation have been published. The aim of this study is to determine to what extent the recommendations in these various documents have been implemented at the Cape Town Juvenile Assessment Centre. The aim of the Cape Town Juvenile Assessment Centre is to assess all youth in conflict with the law in the magisterial district and, where possible, to divert the case away from the justice system. From the findings of the study it is clear that the Cape Town Juvenile Assessment Centre has progressed far on the continuum of implementing the transformation policies. The probation officers in particular had excellent insight into the transformation process and the implementation of practice principles. It was also clear that every effort was made to make services child and family centred. Diversion options are implemented where possible and detention of juveniles in prisons was reduced drastically. The Cape Town Juvenile Assessment Centre has good relationships with other role-players. Services are co-ordinated through a monthly co-ordination meeting, where role-players like the Departments of Social Services, Justice, South African Police Services and NICRO are represented. In summary, the Cape Town Juvenile Justice Assessment Centre has made commendable progress in implementing policy recommendations and policy related to the transformation of the juvenile justice system. There is, however, room for improvement, particularly with the after-hour assessments. Delegating decision-making powers to all prosecutors will streamline the diversion process. Diversion options for second- or third-time offenders should be developed. Furthermore, not enough support is given to youth in conflict with the law and their families in that very few of them are referred to welfare organisations for continued services.

This study investigates the children's experiences whilst awaiting trial at Dyambu Youth Centre. DYC is the largest Youth Development Centre in the country, which serves involuntary clients. A qualitative research method was used to investigate whether the children in the centre do experience change, or does change come about as a result of other factors? Does staff succeed in transferring their skills and motivation to these children? Do the children feel they belong to DYC whilst awaiting trial? Seeing that a whole range of issues needed to be explored and investigated, interview schedules and focus groups were administered and the children's views about DYC had to be investigated from themselves, their parents, staff, volunteers and probation officers at court, who were responsible for their admission at DYC.

Résumé :

This study explored how citizen science programs can connect young people with nature while providing needed scientific data. The premise was that, with attention to proper design, modification of current programming might increase citizen science outcomes for conservation. Furthermore, combining sound scientific protocols with effective education and positive youth development strategies can lead to consequential benefits for youth and society. An embedded single-case study explored a set of 20 citizen science programs relevant to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to determine how the programs intended to educate and develop youth and to understand the programs’ designs. A theoretical framework based upon science education, environmental education, and positive youth development guided the inquiry. The study also explored how environmental educators, youth group leaders, scientists, and public land managers might work together to design and implement youth community and citizen science programs on federal lands. Study findings informed development of a prototype planning framework to guide planning and implementation of youth-focused community and citizen science programs on federal lands. Using the framework to design robust citizen science programs can assist scientists monitoring environmental conditions to inform land management decisions; and assist environmental education program coordinators to design meaningful service–learning activities for youth.
