Résumé :
The transformation of Hong Kong into a high-density city has created a unique three-dimensional urban fabric defined through networks of urban activity and infrastructure within tight spatial constraints of mountainous slopes and the island shoreline. In Hong Kong urban development, the government performs a dual role both as landlord and as administrator determining the development agenda. With limited space available for development high land price policies have restricted land supplies and priority is given to ‘economic space’ rather than ‘life space’. This has created a city of mobility based on consumption where privatized public spaces such as shopping malls, corporate plazas and elevated walkways are linked primarily to promote shopping. Public spaces are increasingly managed by private parties, and the degree of publicness of such spaces is often not clearly distinguishable to their potential users. Due to Hong Kong’s population density of approximately 33,000 persons/km2, practices of everyday life are increasingly limited by multiple restrictions controlling the use of spaces that only seem to be public. The district of Central, Hong Kong features an urban network of both publicly and privately maintained elevated pedestrian walkways that provide a secondary circulation space. Designed according to commercial priorities, the walkway system in Central typically links privately owned second floor lobbies with similar owners to promote consumption. Although these regulated spaces are required to allow public access 24 hours a day, pedestrian connectivity seems merely an after thought. In such private public spaces, pedestrians move between consumption nodes through a maze of displays and windows filled with luxury consumer goods. This study takes focus on the walkways in Central thus investigating publicness specifically within the context of Hong Kong's high-density urban fabric, then within a wider context of elevated pedestrian walkway systems in Asian Pacific cities. To this end, this thesis employs an empirical case study methodology consisting of a series of observational studies. Each of these studies publicness transcribed through observations of use, users and use patterns. This study identifies a distinction that underlies the discussion of publicness: that of non-place as opposed to place. The distinction of space and place relates to whether users establish personal relationships to the spaces they use and has drawn much critical attention in urban studies over the past several decades. Places typically provide the stage for social practices. The relationship between place and mobility at an elevated level has however, not been studied in detail yet. As mobile urban populations pass through places more than we dwell in them, a new type of space has emerged to facilitate a ‘frictionless passage’, or non-place. Within this realm of non-place pedestrians pass through zones of movement like passengers experiencing a lack of relationship or disconnectivity with a space. This leads to the question whether elevated pedestrian walkways consisting of spatial flows, movement and transitional zones are only capable of performing as non-places? Can relationships develop between the walkways and their users, making them more than non-places, but places? A case study forms the main part of this thesis and specifically focuses on observing aspect of movement and circulation within Central that determine perceptions of publicness. Findings resulting from this study provide an understanding of the ambiguous nature of spaces in Central. From a background study of elevated pedestrian walkways in six Asian Pacific cities, indicators of publicness are established that provide a framework to distinguish characteristics of elevated pedestrian walkways. In Central, gatherings among domestic helpers are found to contribute to the success of the elevated pedestrian walkway system into urban context. Results of this study indicate that elevated pedestrian walkways can be both places and non-places depending on the publicness of space and suggest how a transition of publicness can occur within such spaces.

What means today being a hui ? what are the relations between han and hui. How do the hui conceive themselves and the others? what are the social practices of this double identity, both muslim and chinese ? what is here the role of religion, and what are we think of that islam which accepts within itself women's mosques ? many interpretations of this hui identity have been proposed. Are the hui a group confronted with the dilemna between assimilation and antagonism ? or are we to talk about syncretism ? any description which would immobilize individuals and groups into a fixed identity would prevent us from understanding realities which are much more instable. We have concentrated our investigations on the henan where the hui, though a minority, are nearly one million. Fieldwork made over a long period and at various points of time provides the materials for our reflexion. In our inquiries, whether about doctrine or about ritual, we never met anything corresponding to the classical definition of syncretism. There is never mixing, but always juxtaposition, and in the people's mind, the latter doesn't seem to make any difficulty : where observers from abroad would expect to find tensions, coexistence of dissimilar elements seems altogether natural. As happens in other contexts or regions, for instance in nepal or india, the double cultural reference is used in different ways according to situations. As to the place the hui hold within chinese society, here is a community which has always been a minority group and has during its whole history put up with that status. Moreover, they always considered themselves as an integral part of chinese society and knew how to bind their cause to that of those movements which agitated it in its depth

Résumé :
A study of nocturnal inversions in the Central Plains of the United States was conducted using 15 National Weather Service stations. Radiosonde data from 1960 to 2007 were analyzed in order to assess any regional trends in inversion characteristics. Previous research suggests that the urban heat effect counteracts the inversion effect and, therefore, a change in inversion characteristics was expected. Yearly, seasonal, and monthly statistical analyses revealed few trends in inversion frequency, intensity, and depth. Using statistical and graphical analyses, no overarching changes in nocturnal inversions were observable over the Central Plains during this time. While not explicitly the intention of this study, one consistent result was displayed through the average soundings: an overall atmospheric warming (from near surface to 500 mb) existed at thirteen of the fifteen sites.

Associations of land cover/land use, socio-economic and housing, and hydrological and soil-hydrological variables were evaluated retrospectively as potential risk factors for canine leptospirosis in Kansas and Nebraska using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The sample included 94 dogs positive for leptospirosis based on a positive polymerase chain reaction test for leptospires in urine, isolation of leptospires on urine culture, a single reciprocal serum titer of 12,800 or greater, or a four-fold rise in reciprocal serum titers over a 2 to 4 week period; and 185 dogs negative for leptospirosis based on a negative polymerase chain reaction test and reciprocal serum titers less than 400. Publicly available geographic datasets representing land cover/land use, socio-economic and housing characteristics, and hydrologic and soil hydrologic themes were analyzed along with geocoded addresses of case/control locations in GIS. Among different land cover/land use variables evaluated, urban areas (high and medium intensity urban areas and urban areas in general) and evergreen forests and forest/woodlands in general were significant risk factors. Among socio-economic and demographic determinants evaluated, houses lacking complete plumbing facilities, poverty status by age (18-64), and living within 2500 meters of a university/college or parks/forests were significant risk factors. Proximity to water features, hydrologic density and frequently flooded areas were identified as significant risk factors for canine leptospirosis among hydrologic and soil-hydrologic variables. Pet owners whose dogs live in such areas or under these circumstances should consider vaccination to prevent canine leptospirosis.

Fossil pollen assemblages are widely used in paleoenvironmental reconstruction of vegetation regimes and climate conditions. The modern analog technique (MAT) is a popular method used for analysis of these fossil pollen assemblages, but a large modern pollen dataset, such as the North American Pollen Database (NAPD), is needed to provide modern comparisons for interpretation of analog/no-analog situations. While many climate types are well represented within the NAPD, the climates of the southern and central Great Plains of North America are poorly represented. In this study, I collected 31 sediment samples containing pollen from these underrepresented climate types across the Great Plains in the U.S.A. Analysis of these 31 pollen assemblages, along with 504 samples classified as “prairie” from the NAPD and 24 pollen samples from the Flint Hills of Kansas, U.S.A. was conducted to determine if the three major prairie types (short grass, mixed grass, and tallgrass prairies) could be delineated from pollen records alone. Two different MAT dissimilarity metrics (Squared Chord Distance and Canberra Distance Metric) were assessed for their ability to delineate among prairie types and Squared Chord Distance (SCD) was found to a be the better prairie type classifier than Canberra Distance Metric (CDM). Receiver Operator Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to assess the ability of each metric to identify similar pollen assemblages. It has been show in previous studies that two genera found in this region – Ambrosia and Artemisia –respond to temperature and moisture availability in different ways. Using the ratio of the proportions of Ambrosia and Artemisia pollen grains in a pollen assemblage it was found that tallgrass prairies are significantly different from the other two prairie types. The Ambrosia/Artemisia ratio is also useful in determining climatic conditions. This ratio provides paleoenvironmental researchers with a simple quantitative tool to quickly assess general climatic conditions and prairie type.

Sebillaud, Pauline.

Settlement spatial organization in China has yet to be intensively investigated for the critical transition between the end of the Neolithic to the beginning of the Bronze Age, two periods which usually constitute separate fields in Chinese academia. In order to conduct a thorough study of this transition, this dissertation synthesizes the vast and growing corpus of excavation and mapping data of archaeological sites in order to highlight variations of spatial occupation and changes of population dynamics. This includes a comprehensive definition of the chronological and geographical parameters of these periods that integrates previous research with a systematic GIS database. A statistical and spatial analysis of settlement distribution within the entire Central Plains shows the exchanges network that structured the human occupation. A subsequent regional-scale analysis allows us to analyze spatial occupation density and demographic evolution. These analyses help to build new paradigms for understanding multi-rhythm temporality in early China and redefine the main characteristics of the significant transition period between the end of the Neolithic and the Early Bronze Age

Serikbayeva, Assel. « China and Russia| Competition for Central Asian energy ». Thesis, Webster University, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1523365.

Texte intégral
Résumé :

Over the past two decades, a substantial literature has focused on the geopolitics of strategically located Central Asian energy supplies. Some analysts have even regarded the international competition over the regional oil and gas as a New Great Game among the developed West, Russia, and the emerging Asian energy importers. Much less attention has been paid to the means employed by the various competitors in achieving their interests in the Central Asian hydrocarbon sector. This Master Thesis analyzes the competition over the energy resources in Kazakhstan between two regional powers Russia and China for the period from 1991 to 2011. The study assesses the concept of power in its political, economic, and military terms as a way to achieve desired outcomes in the regional energy sector. The analysis concludes that economic statecraft is the dominant tool used in securing interests in the Central Asian oil and gas sector and thus allows China's economic clout to guarantee favorable energy deals. At the same time, the results suggest that Russia's soft power along with the traditional military engagements help to secure other strategic interests in the region apart from the energy sector.
