Résumé :
Abstract Nontrivial diffeomorphisms act on the horizon of a generic 4D black holes and create distinguishing features referred to as soft hair. Amongst these are a left–right pair of Virasoro algebras with associated charges that reproduce the Bekenstein–Hawking entropy for Kerr black holes. In this paper we show that if one adds a negative cosmological constant, there is a similar set of infinitesimal diffeomorphisms that act non-trivially on the horizon. The algebra of these diffeomorphisms gives rise to a central charge. Adding a boundary counterterm, justified to achieve integrability, leads to well-defined central charges with c L = c R. The macroscopic area law for Kerr-AdS black holes follows from the assumption of a Cardy formula governing the black hole microstates.

Résumé :
The AdS/CFT conjecture offers the possibility of a quantum description for a black hole in terms of a CFT. This has led to the study of general AdS3 type black holes with a view to constructing an explicit toy quantum black hole model. Such a CFT description would be characterized by its central charge and the dimensions of its primary fields. Recently, the expression for the central charges (CL, CR) of the CFT dual to the warped AdS3 have been determined using asymptotic symmetry arguments. The central charges depend, as expected, on the warping factor. We show that topological arguments, used by Witten to constrain central charges for the BTZ black hole, can be generalized to deal with the warped AdS3 case. Topology constrains the warped factor to be rational numbers while quasi-normal modes are conjectured to give the dimensions of primary fields. We find that in the limit when warping is large or when it takes special rational values, the system tends to Witten's conjectured unique CFTs with central charges that are multiples of 24.

Sets of commuting charges constructed from the current of a U(1) Kac-Moody algebra are found. There exists a set Sn of such charges for each positive integer n>1; the corresponding value of the central charge in the Feigin-Fuchs realization of the stress tensor is c=13−6n−6/n. The charges in each series can be written in terms of the generators of an exceptional W algebra.

Résumé :
We construct the manifestly Lorenz-invariant formulation of the N = 1, D=4 massive superparticle with tensorial central charges. The model contains a real parameter k and at k≠0 possesses one κ-symmetry while at k=0 the number of κ-symmetry is two. The equivalence of the formulations at all k≠0 is obtained. The local transformations of κ-symmetry are written. It is considered using the index spinor for construction of the tensorial central charges. The equivalence at classical level between the massive D=4 superparticle with one κ-symmetry and the massive D=4 spinning particle is obtained.

This thesis collects three works about holographic computations of entanglement entropy. In the first one it is shown how to compute numerically, following the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription, the entanglement entropy for arbitrarily shaped entangling regions in three dimensional conformal field theories. The other two focus on holographic theories with hyperscaling violating exponents: the time dependence after a holographic quench is analyzed and the arising of new universal terms due to the presence of non smooth boundaries is shown.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDD) mainly concern neuromuscular diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, Huntington's disease. Due to the multiplicity of factors inducing a weight loss, the NDD are at risk of malnutrition, which can alter the evolution of these diseases and the quality of life of patients. The purpose of this work was to assess the nutritional status and / or the effect of treatment of patients with ALS and cognitive disorders (dementia and / or mild cognitive impairment [MCI]) in France with a health network, but also in Central Africa. The health network Limousin Nutrition (LINUT) realizes assessments and nutritional interventions in ALS patients at home and in residents of nursing homes (NH). The first evaluation by the network of ALS patients found more swallowing disorders than specialized consultation (60.0% vs. 47.5%) and taste disorders (43.8%), not further described in ALS. Improvements of practices were proposed. The network assessed also residents in NH, with or without dementia, initially and after a 4 months follow-up. Malnutrition affected more often demented patients (56.1% vs. 46.4% p=0.004), and energy intakes of all residents (26.4 ± 8.8 kcal/kg/d) were below the recommendations. The network intervention improved the nutritional status of patients with dementia (+0.29 ± 0.07 point of MNA®/month, p=0.003) and energy intake of all residents at 4 months. Two studies named

Résumé :
Thesis (MTech (Civil Engineering))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2008.
There is an ever increasing need to introduce travel demand measures as the ability to construct new and upgrade existing roads to accommodate additional traffic volumes decreases. The City of Cape Town, hereinafter referred to as the City, has forecasted that traffic in the city could continue to increase by two and a half percent per year. To mitigate against the increased traffic volumes, the City is proposing a number of travel demand strategies, including a park and-ride facilities and high occupancy vehicle initiatives in the short term. The City’s draft travel demand management strategy identifies congestion charging as a measure more possible implementation in the medium term. This study investigates the feasibility of introducing a congestion charge from a traffic engineering perspective. This entails determining if there could be a reduction in traffic entering the Central Business District, what type of congestion charge is most suited for Cape Town and what type of technology is most appropriate at this point in time. In determining the type of charge and technology for introduction in Cape Town, international experience and trials were drawn upon in terms of case studies and research completed. These included developed and developing cities that had either introduced a congestion charge or considered it. To determine the potential level of traffic reduction, transportation elasticities for road pricing/congestion charging were used. This method of calculating the traffic reduction has been used on similar studies and provides a reasonable indication of the potential percentage reduction which could be achieved. The elasticities were based on post-implementation studies undertaken in cities which had introduced a congestion charge or road user pricing. For this study, elasticities between -0.1 and -0.5 were used. The study found that of the types of congestion charging available, a simple cordon charge, around the central business district (CBD) was most feasible. A cordon area would be more appropriate due to the small charge area involved, the flexibility that it allows and because it does not need to be visually intrusive in terms of roadside and enforcement equipment. The location of the cordon area also allows the key roads around the CBD to become the bypass route for vehicles that currently pass through the area. In terms of the charge payment system, it was found that presently, a manual payment system would be more appropriate for the city than a tag and beacon system.

Résumé :
AbstractAs the beam intensity increases, the beam can no longer be considered as a collection of non-interacting single particles: in addition to the “single-particle phenomena”, “collective effects” become significant. At low intensity a beam of charged particles moves around an accelerator under the Lorentz force produced by the “external” electromagnetic fields (from the guiding and focusing magnets, RF cavities, etc.). However, the charged particles also interact with themselves (leading to space charge effects) and with their environment, inducing charges and currents in the surrounding structures, which create electromagnetic fields called wake fields. In the ultra-relativistic limit, causality dictates that there can be no electromagnetic field in front of the beam, which explains the term “wake”. It is often useful to examine the frequency content of the wake field (a time domain quantity) by performing a Fourier transformation on it. This leads to the concept of impedance (a frequency domain quantity), which is a complex function of frequency. The charged particles can also interact with other charged particles present in the accelerator (leading to two-stream effects, and in particular to electron cloud effects in positron/hadron machines) and with the counter-rotating beam in a collider (leading to beam–beam effects). As the beam intensity increases, all these “perturbations” should be properly quantified and the motion of the charged particles will eventually still be governed by the Lorentz force but using the total electromagnetic fields, which are the sum of the external and perturbation fields. Note that in some cases a perturbative treatment is not sufficient and the problem has to be solved self consistently. These perturbations can lead to both incoherent (i.e. of a single particle) and coherent (i.e. of the centre of mass) effects, in the longitudinal and in one or both transverse directions, leading to beam quality degradation or even partial or total beam losses. Fortunately, stabilising mechanisms exist, such as Landau damping, electronic feedback systems and linear coupling between the transverse planes (as in the case of a transverse coherent instability, one plane is usually more critical than the other).

Résumé :
Low back pain, a major socio-economic concern in the United States, is believed to result from degeneration of the intervertebral disc (IVD) of the spine [1]. The IVD is characterized as a charged, hydrated soft tissue made up of a central nucleus pulposus (NP) surrounded by the layered annulus fibrosus (AF). The negatively-charged nature of the disc derives from the charged groups attached to the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) molecules found on proteoglycans (PG) in the extracellular matrix of the disc. The fixed charge density (FCD) is a measure of the number of negative charges attached to the disc matrix per unit volume. FCD is important to disc function, both mechanically (i.e., swelling pressure) and in terms of transport through the disc [2].

Résumé :
This work examined a multilayer composite charge composed of an internal explosive charge, an intermediate non-explosive material and an outer aluminized explosive arranged in a coaxial structure. Using numerical simulations, a back propagation (BP) neural network algorithm and experimental verification, the shock wave overpressure characteristics of multilayer composite charges s having various structural parameters and initiation modes were examined. The ratio of the shock wave overpressure increase from simultaneous initiation of the internal and external charges to that generated by initiation of the central single charge was used to assess the effects of the structural parameters, overpressure increase ratio and suitable ranges for these parameters were generated. The structure of the composite charge was then optimized based on BP neural network calculations. The reliability of the numerical simulation method was verified by actual static explosion tests of warheads.

Résumé :
The transport of charge due to electric stimulus is the primary mechanism of actuation for a class of polymeric active materials known as ionomeric polymer transducers. Continuum-based models of ion transport have been developed for the purpose of understanding charge transport due to diffusion and migration. In this work a two dimensional ion hopping model has been built to describe ion transport in ionomeric polymer transducer (IPT) with Monte-Carlo simulation. In the simulation, cations are distributed on 50nm × 50nm × 1nm (or 50nm × 10 nm × 1nm) lattice cells of IPT while the same number of negative charges are uniformly scattered and fixed as background. In the simulation, thermally activated cations are hopping between multiwell energy structures by overcoming energy barriers around with a hopping distance of 1nm during each time step. A step voltage is applied between the electrodes of the IPT. In one single simulation step, coulomb energy, external electric potential energy and intrinsic energy of the material are calculated and added up for the energy wells around the cations. And then hopping rates in every potential hopping direction are obtained. Due to the random nature of the ion transitions, a weighting function from Monte-Carlo algorithm is added in to calculate the ion hopping time. Finally hopping time is compared, the minimum hopping time is chosen and one hopping event is completed. Both system time and ions distribution are updated before the next simulation loop. Periodic boundary conditions are applied when ions hop in the direction perpendicular to the electric field. The influence of the electrodes on both faces of IPT is presented by the method of image charges. The charge density at equilibrium state is compared with the result from a continuum-based model. The property of charge density has charge neutrality over the central part of the membrane and the charge imbalance over boundary layers close to the anode and cathode. Electric field distribution is obtained after charge distribution. After it is demonstrated that ion hopping model leads to the results qualitatively matching the property of IPT, the paper uses the model to analyze the polymer-metal interface when the electrode shape inside transducer varies.

Résumé :
Because of an increase in peak electricity demand during summer daytime, a decrease in the annual load factor of power generation facilities has been one of the serious problems for central power utility systems. On the other hand, utility-connected dispersed cogeneration systems have been increasingly installed for energy supply in industrial and commercial sectors. This paper analyzes the cooperative relationship between power utility and cogeneration systems through time-of-use pricing. A game-theory approach in mathematical programming, i.e., bilevel programming, is applied to attain this objective. At the upper level, a power utility system determines the time-of-use rates for demand and energy charges of electricity purchased by a cogeneration system to maximize its load factor, and at the lower level, a cogeneration system determines its design and operation to minimize its annual total cost. Through a basic case study, it has been shown how the time-of-use rates are determined to attain the cooperative relationship between power utility and cogeneration systems.

Résumé :
It is possible to induce second order nonlinear effects in glass systems, such as fibres, films or bulk silica samples by recording a permanent electric field optically, or by poling the samples with high voltages and heat. Characterising the charge distribution is central to understanding the mechanisms involved. We recently imaged frequency doubling gratings in fibres previously prepared for SHG, by etched the fibres until close to the core. Due to the presence of charges, etching is nonuniform, and the period of the grating can be unambiguously identified. Here, we present a simple technique to determine the charge distribution in poled glasses with submicron resolution. An interference pattern was formed by the reflections of a HeNe beam on the faces of a 1 mm thick poled slice of SiO2(3 KV, 280 °C). One of the faces was etched in HF, while the other was used as a reference, and the intensity of one fringe was monitored in real time. The optical path of the light reflected off the surface being etched was altered. When the glass was not poled, the etching rate was constant and a periodic variation of the fringe intensity was seen. When the glass was poled, a strong frequency modulation was observed. Positive charge resulted in slower etching, and negative charge caused faster etching [1].

Résumé :
This paper focuses on the economic regulation of airports in Central Europe and in the world, but also focuses in detail on the method of implementing economic regulation in the Slovak Republic, which results from the transposition of Directive 2009/12/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on airport charges. The introductory part of the paper explains in detail the theory needed for a comprehensive understanding of this task, such as the basic characteristics of the airport and the economics of airports. Due to need for a comprehensive solution to the topic, the airport was examined from an operational point of view, and for the purpose of determining the scope of regulation, the paper also focuses on the characteristics of aviation and non-aviation activities. Paper characterizes the various approaches to economic regulation of airports in selected countries of the world and the countries of Central Europe, where we focused on the forms and scope of regulation, as well as in the case of EU Member States on the implementation of Directive 2009/12/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on airport charges into national legislation. The most important part of the work a comprehensive summary of the approach to the economic regulation of airports in the Slovak Republic from its onset to the present with an indication of the legislation that regulates it. At the same time, the paper points out possible options of changes in the set system, which are benefits of the paper. Paper uses research methods such as analysis, comparison, and abstraction, as well as graphs, figures, and tables, which facilitate the understanding of the task and the researched issue.

The 21st century has witnessed a significant shift in how the concept of nationalism is understood. A political marriage between identity politics and populism has resulted in “civilizationism,” a new form of nationalism that entails an emotionally charged division of society into “the people” versus “the Other.” All too often, the divisive discourses and policies associated with civilizationalist populism produce intercommunal conflict and violence. This paper draws on a salient case study, India’s Hindutva movement, to analyze how mainstream populist political parties and grassroots organizations can leverage civilizationist populism in campaigns to mobilize political constituencies. In surveying the various groups within the Hindutva movement and conducting a discourse analysis of their leaders’ statements, the paper shows the central role of sacralized nostalgia, history, and culture in Hindutva populist civilizationism. By analyzing the contours and socio-political implications of civilizationist populism through this case study, the paper contributes to the theoretical understanding of the concept more generally.
