Summary, Conclusion and Recommendation. The first chapter as introduction has explained the history and origin of periodicals, development of periodical during the 20th century, meaning and definition of periodicals, types of periodicals, characteristics of periodicals, selection of Periodicals, Selection Tools of Periodicals, Acquisition of Periodicals, Payment procedures, methods of recording the receipt of periodicals, display of periodicals, completion of volume, accessioning, classification and cataloguing. Brief Description on Periodical Section. In addition, description on Statement of Problems includes the following problems: a. Increasing subscription cost of periodicals. b. Budgetary constraints. c. Gap in periodical receipt. d. Misplace of periodicals. e. Binding problem. f. Tearing of pages from journals. g. Lack of adequate furniture. h. Lack of space. The objectives of this study are to: i. Explore the total number of periodicals available in TUCL for Science and Management Faculty. ii. Find out how the periodical are organized in TUCL. iii. Find out users’ preference on print vs. electronic journals. iv. Find out satisfaction of users about the adequacy of journals for Science and Management Faculty. v. Recommend the appropriate periodical management system based on the suggestion of users. The scope of this study is limited to finding about the availability of total number of periodicals on Science and Management in TUCL only, portrays the collection strength of journals, and describes the organization and management of scientific journals only and does not include the daily newspaper, magazine. The significance of this study lies in the management of journals, finding out the collection strength of journals and finally it helps to know about users’ satisfaction about availability and adequacy of journals in TUCL. VI. The study includes the terminology in order to explain the words and phrases that deals with library and information science, which are also included in this research. The Review of Literature section includes 10 literatures that are consulted for preparation of this study. These literatures are reviewed because these are relevant to this study as they document about various methods of periodical management system in different academic libraries of different countries. The section “Focus of Study” is focused on explaining about the description of periodical section of TUCL with information about its activities regarding responsibilities, reader services, additional activities, creation of database, and detail record of periodicals on Science and Management Faculty. The study applies descriptive method and it is questionnaire-based data gathering survey containing 19 questions. A total of 100 questionnaires were distributed to the students of Science and Management faculty of Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur Campus, of which 69 responses were obtained with differing number of questionnaires attempted. The analysis and evaluation of the study is based on the responses received from them. Out of 69 responses analyzed, 39 (56.52%) respondents were from Science and 30 (43.48%) from Management faculty. Out of 57 respondents, 31 (54.38%) (Sci 18, Mgmt 13) opined the holdings (availability) of periodicals is satisfactory, 19 (33.33%) (Sci 13, Mgmt 6) indicated “Inadequate”. Out of 59 respondents, majority of respondents (34) (57.62%) (Sci 18, Mgmt 16), responded that they were able to find the periodicals for consulting. On the question “what they do to locate the information in eriodicals?”. Out of 59, 26 respondents (44.06%) (Sci 18, Mgmt, 8) consulted catalogues, 22 (22.02%) respondents (Sci 8, Mgmt 5) searched directly on display rack, 5 (8.47%) respondents (Sci 2, Mgmt 3) consulted or approached librarian for finding the information from periodicals. On the question of selecting their choice of periodical format, 28 respondents (Sci 17, Mgmt 11) preferred the print version (hardcopy) of periodicals, just 2 respondents from science faculty preferred their choice of periodical format as electronic. However, as many as 27 respondents (Sci 17, Mgmt 5) indicated their choice of periodical format of both the formats (print and electronic version). On the question to “rate the usefulness of periodicals, out of 69, 30 respondents (Sci 19, Mgmt 11) rated the periodicals of current year as "most" useful, 28 respondents (Sci 17, Mgmt 11) rated the VII periodicals of last two years as "more" useful, 14 respondents’ (Sci 5, Mgmt 9) ratings on periodicals of last 5-10 years as "less" useful, and 17 (Sci 10, Mgmt 7) (24.63%) rated the periodicals of last 10 years and beyond are "least" useful. On the organization/display of periodicals, 30 (50%) respondents (Sci 23, Mgmt 7) remarked on “lack of recent issues of periodicals on display racks, each 14 (23.33%) respondents (Sci 6, Mgmt 8) showed remarks on "good" and "not in proper order" and 2 respondents from management faculty opined the journal display as "bad". Four out of 61 respondents responded that they were able to find the journal/articles "immediately" and none of respondents from science faculty responded on this variable. 31 (Sci 24, Mgmt 7) (50.81%) respondents were able to find the journal/articles "occasionally", 16 (Sci 10, Mgmt 6) respondents responded "not in time of need" Only 10 (Sci 3, Mgmt 7) (16.39%) respondents remarked that they were able to find the journal/articles "soon". On the question “are you happy with the organization of periodicals”, out of 63 respondents, 30 (Sci 19, Mgmt 11) (47.61%) responded that they were satisfied (happy) with the organization of periodicals. 33 respondents (Sci 19, Mgmt 14) (30.15%) opined "No". Evaluation of journals usage is a difficult but necessary task considering the wide range of choices available. Limited funding and space, as well as other factors, influence the need for a carefully planned strategy of journal selection. In order to enhance the use of collection, the following effective strategies have to be carried out. 1. Effective orientation program should be carried out by involving as many students as possible and more time should be offered for the program so that students get more familiarized. 2. In the selection of periodicals, students' opinion should be sought or suggestions box should be kept. 3. Periodical section should place the periodicals in Display room soon after the completion of processing work and continue keeping vigilance to ensure the recent periodicals are on display. 4. A computer with Internet access should be in the Periodical section for user access. 5. Based on usability, frequency of use, the backdated volume of journals should be considered for withdrawal from the stack and should be planned for retention in space-saving manner. 6. TUCL should consider re-organizing the periodicals by following the scientific management system so that users could be better served. 7. Front desk service should be made available in Periodical Display room.

Fitchett, Deborah. « Students' natural use of language for academic library concepts ». Thesis, 2006. http://eprints.rclis.org/19599/1/StudentsNaturalUseOfLanguage.pdf.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Library jargon is a barrier to users in their interactions with library staff and systems. Comprehension testing has shown that many students do not understand common library jargon. Usability testing and preference testing have successfully sought user feedback in order to develop more user-friendly interfaces. In this study into language preferences, a questionnaire was based on 20 concepts taken from New Zealand university library websites. Participants were asked to label these concepts with terms of their own choosing. New Zealand university summer school coordinators were asked to forward a URL for the web-based questionnaire to students in their classes. Fifty valid responses were received. Concepts that were central to students' library experiences were labelled with as few as 4 different terms, while less central concepts were labelled with more than 30. Library jargon was an important influence on students' choice of terminology. For many concepts, however, students used terms that had not been found on library websites. Further research is recommended into a broader range of concepts, and into whether user-derived terminology outperforms library jargon in whole-library context usability testing.

Résumé :
The search activities and information retrieval consist of selecting of the information mass those elements that It assist satisfactorily the information needs of a group or individual, in the instant of your solicitation. Those activities, are own of the professional librarian, because, the essence of the Librarianship consists of locating, to treat, to store, to retrieval and to disseminate the information. But, with the development of the information and communication technologies the storage capacity in databases is growing, as well as the direct access of the users to the information, turning the information retrieval in half electronic a quite complex task. These factors take to investigate if the users have been getting to supply your information needs efficiently, without the professional librarian as intermediate. It was proposed the study of the behavior of a sample of the students of the powders graduation of the UNESP-Marília in the search activities and information retrieval in databases specialized, through the application of questionnaires and observations of your search procedures. With support of pertinent theoretical referential to the theme, the data were tabulated and analyzed quantitative and qualitative. As results, it was verified that several problems impede that the users take advantage of all the potentiality that the bases of data now offer for the information retrieval. It is ended that, the studies on the behavior of the users' search and the inherent knowledge to the librarian, they can contribute to the design of systems of information retrieval and more efficient search interfaces.

Shrestha, Nina. « A Study on Students Use of Library Resources and Self-efficacy ». Thesis, 2008. http://eprints.rclis.org/22623/1/NinaShrestha.pdf.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This study has been undertaken to determine the "Students use of the library resources and self-efficacy". This study has tried to find out the information seeking behavior of the graduate level students and their knowledge about the library resources and services made available to them. And how their familiarity with the resources and technology develops self-efficacy. The study has tried to find out how the integration of the Internet has affected the information searching habit on students. The study has collected empirical data on the information searching behavior of the students of the three respective colleges taken under study they are Thapathali College, NCCS(National College of Computer Science) and Kathmandu University. These data has been gathered from 25% of the actually targeted group of study. Questionnaire method has been obtained to collect primary data from the 200 full time students of which 127 has been returned which is the exact number of questionnaire tabulated for the study. After tabulating and analyzing the data the findings of the study indicated that students are most in the need of intervention as they often come to college unprepared. The guidance in the use of library resources and services is necessary to help students meet some of the information requirements. It is also found that library books, e-journals and Internet are the most popular source of information for the course work and research and the place of Google in the student’s information behavior is prominent and positively co-related to use of traditional library resources. The study shows that in today’s fast paced world the desire for expediency has promoted students to place a premium on information that can be found easily and quickly. To this end, many students limit their search to electronic resources, choosing format over substance and convenience over accuracy. In particular reliance on the world wide web as a primary and often sole research tool has impacted the quality and rigor of students projects and reduced students familiarity with more traditional print resources and bibliographical databases in their college library collection. Internet has rapidly become one of the most powerful global sources of wide range of information presenting many possibilities for the efficient and unlimited dissemination of information. It has contributed positively in enhancing the search effectiveness. Which has lead to giving students psychological boost and problem solving ability. The newfound confidence due to the easily accessible information resources has upgraded the learning ways among them. Students have become more competent and confident about what they could achieve in the given situations and knowledgeable about the ways that leads to the achievement. With the popularity of the electronic resources as the major information sources the study has also found that all the libraries is automated with some having their own online catalogue system with subscription to electronic journal sites and bibliographic indexes. Even if the library did not have various electronic resources they gave Internet services through computer labs and online catalogue. But without proper knowledge of accessing the information sources both electronic or print students are vulnerable to the overloaded information and was not seen so much keen on using the library’s electronic resources they preferred internet resources as its interface is easy to use and they could get unlimited information on the subjects. Proper guidance and lack of professional person along with the inadequate collection in the material as well as insufficient networking computers has been the main drawbacks on students exploring the resources. For them to be more interested towards libraries librarians along with the faculty members need to work together in educating them about the services and resources that is available and library should also work towards networking with other libraries so that it could provide better range of materials in given subject. In this study even though students are drawn to information sources that allow them to complete their research in “the easiest least painful way” the large percent of students are still motivated to learn about accessing their present library resources. With such a strong bias among students towards using the web as their primary research tool, library instruction should be considered a crucial means of introducing students to print resources of the library beside the web. Numerous studies have shown that positive change in student’s research skills and knowledge of the library and its resources after library instruction. This study has also tried to point towards that aspect of the library where it could educate its users by giving orientation so they can become an accurate searcher and make use of the right information at the right time.

This study examines the behavior that leads to relevance judgements. The analysis of the nature of relevance shows that there is no single definition for the concept. How users interpret relevance and how they make decisions is influenced by a large number of factors. In an exploratory eyetracking experiment with twelve students from the University of Applied Sciences in Darmstadt, the author examines the point when decisions are made, the information that they’re based on and what factors affect those judgments. Two categories of evaluators can be distinguished. Using four parameters, the overall length of the evaluation, the number of fixations, number of visited AOIs and length of the scanpath, all users of the study can be grouped into two kinds of evaluators, exhaustive and economic ones.

The thesis deals with the field of scholarly publishing. It analyzes the changes introduced by digitalization and networking and hypothesizes that a new field is developing: the field of digital scholarly publishing. It proposes an overview of the field using field theory, analyzing the situation of libraries with special attention to the serial pricing crisis and the changes into the organization of publishing houses. A socioconstructivist method is adopted to interpret the findings of the quantitative survey on academic scholar’s views on digital publishing and open access. The survey has received 250 answers and the results have been analyzed through cluster analysis. A detailed discussion of the frequencies of answers is proposed. The findings of the quantitative survey, along with the socioconstructivst interpretation brings to the final chapter where a few scenarios for the evolution of the field are proposed and discussed.

Résumé :
The appearance of electronic journals as a new media has transformed academic publishing and the services offered by university libraries. The big publishing houses have tackled the change from paper-based scientific journal publishing to electronic formats by introducing a new marketing model: substituting traditional title-by-title subscriptions to a system of subscribing to licence packages, known as the "Big Deal". In answer to this, the libraries have joined forces to negotiate better terms for the joint acquisition of electronic content. In the case of the University Library Consortium of Catalonia (CBUC), analysis has been carried out of the use of electronic journals to which libraries have subscribed. Based on the usage statistics supplied by the publishers, analysis was conducted on the use of subscription to seven electronic journals packages (American Chemical Society (ACS), American Institute of Physics (AIP), Blackwell, Elsevier, Emerald, Springer and Wiley) amongst the seven universities that made up the CBUC –Universitat de Barcelona (UB), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), Universidad de Girona (UDG), Universitat de Lleida (UDL) and Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV)– in 2005. The results showed that the universities, regardless of their size, had different levels of use of the journals. The results also showed differences between different scientific fields. These differences in use were referenced against each university's collection of back issues and with the institution's research activity. It was also seen that journals that were not previously subscribed to showed very low levels of use. Finally, the analysis showed that the level of use of a scientific journals can serve as an indicator of the research a university carries out and for its own evaluation purposes. Use can be taken into account when distributing the cost of subscribing to electronic journals.

Résumé :
As with service-based business enterprises, determining the quality of service provided by libraries is dependent on the discovery of reliable data. In modern libraries, the ability to accurately measure and evaluate quality service to users holds a significant place in determining the value of library service to users and provides a key to appraising performance and productivity. The ability to analyze performance is one of the most important factors in the successful performance of their duties for university libraries. The quality level of the various services provided by university libraries of our country cannot be defined numerically; on the contrary, libraries have usually relied on the traditional means of analysis, making judgements based on generalized observation or common opinion. In university libraries measuring quality levels of user-focused services is a core problem. The hypothesis of this research has been stated as “The quality of the services provided by METU Library can be measured and re-organized according to the dimensions of library service quality which affect service, access to information, library as place and personal control”. In this thesis, the LibQUAL+TM service quality measurement tool has been applied as the scale of user-focused service quality and the quality of service at the METU Library has been measured. Determining the findings and evaluating them against those found in the literature provide the results of this research.

Using web analytics it is possible to establish Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for university websites, which together with other metrics of competitive intelligence that come from cyber- metrics and social media, allow us to measure on a global scale the presence of higher education institutions on the Internet, and to characterize the behavior of their audience. As an input for information architecture, however, this method should be complemented by other user research techniques that deliver qualitative data. This document presents a project case study on the institutional website of the University of Chile, with the goal of providing recommendations for redesign, and optimization of the areas of outreach, graduate studies and internationalization.

Résumé :
The growth of worldwide internet usage has given rise to the phenomenon of 'open movements'. These are communities that evolve based around the collaborative production of common resources, to which free access is typically provided to all who choose to use it. Such communities and the resources they create have developed rapidly over the past 10-20 years and are the cause for major scholarly interest. This study takes the step of applying the lens of Persuasive Design to the study of open movements in order to show how site design can play a role in increasing participant activity and longevity. For this purpose it looks at two 'open movement' resources, the collaboratively edited map OpenStreetMap and The Pirate Bay, a tracker for torrents uploaded by the le-sharing community. The analysis is two-fold: first, it uses quantitative data of user participation in the systems, derived from downloads of system-generated user-histories to generate an overall picture of user-participation in each of the systems. Second, it applies a set of heuristics to evaluate the persuasive design of the systems in question. It then connects the results of the quantitative analysis with the heuristic analysis in order to see how the persuasive design of the systems impact on user participation. This thesis will primarily be of value to researchers of online collaboration, although it may also be of interest to researchers in the field of Persuasive Design.

Résumé :
The objective of the study is to expand knowledge regarding aspects related to behavior when using databases, for alumni that found themselves working towards a masters or doctoral thesis at the College of Mexico (seria mejor usa el nombre aqui). The study bases itself on the Information Seeking Process(ISP) model proposed by Kuhlthau. The model consists of 6 phases> initiation, selection, exploration, formulation, collection and presentation. The models 6 states incorporate three branches, or axis of the experiences: affection (feelings/emotions), cognitive (thoughts), and physical (actions). The model develops 3 instruments to investigate knowledge of databases and the skills and attitude that students apply when using them. Using the results obtained it is possible to observe subjective aspects that are involved in the selection and use of databases. It is evident that the (iteractiva como interactiva en ingles interactive o iterativa en ingles iterative) nature of information searching where users of information attending the need for information take steps, return over the same steps or skip steps, depending on a diverse group of factors like knowledge prior abilities that a user may have when using databases. Furthermore it has been verified that natural need for information determines significantly the selection of the source to investigate, and the use of those sources

Résumé :
This study examined administrative appeals under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) at two federal government agencies: the Department of the Army and the U.S. Forest Service. The study reviewed all provided case files for appeals received by the agencies in fiscal year 2012, which consisted of 105 appeals at the Army and 53 appeals at the Forest Service. The researcher coded each appeal with respect to the processing time of the initial request, whether a lawyer was involved in preparing the request or appeal, and the professional or situational identity of the requester (journalist, business, agency personnel, etc.). From initial request through initial decision, the median wait time was 31 calendar days at the Forest Service and 40 days at the Army. At both agencies, a person with legal expertise assisted with nearly one-third of appealed FOIA requests. Requests from agency personnel and their families constituted the largest group of the appeals filed at the Army, while at the Forest Service the largest group of appeals came from the "other" category of requesters, including members of the general public and unidentified requesters.

An analysis and caracterization of the access and use of technical standards by engineers in the electrical, chemical and mechanical fields. The search identified the behavior of users in the following ways: kind and source of information, time to find information, recognition of some idiomatic difficulties in technical standards, and satisfaction with results. In the tested population the critical incident was used for data collection. Results include the illustration of a balance between the use of formal and informal channels of communication to access the documents. Technical standards generally are used to find a solution to technical problems. The kind of technical standards more frequently used are technical specifications, technical procedures and assay methods. Most of the technical standards needed by the users appear in the Portuguese language, and secondly in the English language. Analysis included questions about the Brazilian context: production, advertising, reference services from technical standards organizations; and also professional training and scholarships for librarians and library scientists in tecnhical standards areas.

Résumé :
A theoretically orientated and empirically supported research is presented, exploring and developing possible relations between uses of the public library, according to the dimensions of the usage of documentary resources, of space and of the Internet, on one hand, and its representations, on the other. Resorting to a qualitative approach, Michael Burawoy's extended case method was applied to the Library Almeida Garret in the city of Porto. The tools used to gather information were in-depth semi-structured interviews, analysis of children's drawings, observation, documentary analysis of official texts and photography. Several readers were interviewed, including non Internet-users, as well as managers, technical and front-office staff, and the architect. As intermediate results, several users' profiles are presented and an explanation is advanced for the genesis and functioning of a tacit system for the regulation of conducts, especially as far as noise is concerned. As a final result, I conclude that there is no clearly disruptive "impact" induced by the Internet from the collected and analysed representations, which are related to recently registered changes in the reading practices: for some representational images the Internet reinforces the traditional image of the library as an encyclopaedic organization, as a set of diversified resources; for others, Internet use will contribute, on one hand, to their reinforcement, while, on the other hand, it updates and democratizes these representations through an opening to non-learned practices and by the affordance of recreational, communication or, yet, instrumental uses based on the Internet; in more extreme situations, when library and Internet are used as synonyms in the representational grammar, without this technology a library would, naturally, not make sense; but, in the opposite extreme, its popular and intensive use is not thought as being compatible with the image of an institution devoted to culture, here understood as learned culture, the terms being almost antonymic. Changes in the frequency and usage of the public library, are else associated, in a clear manner, to the emergence of new types of readers reflecting changes in the urban social composition of the city and in the ways of urban living. So I conclude that the library without Internet would not be so public, or that it would not exist at all in some people's views, and that the library finds a reinforcement as to what is, and may keep on being, precisely in the public provision of Internet access and in open, free, and, when necessary, personally supported, Internet services.

Résumé :
This dissertation is focused on new email user interfaces that may improve awareness and handling of task-laden messages in the inbox. The practical motivation for this research was to help email users process messages more effectively. Two user studies were conducted to test hypothesized benefits of the new visual representations and to examine the effects of different levels of selected cognitive abilities on task-laden message handling performance. Task performance on both of the new visual interfaces was faster than on the more traditional textual interfaces, but only when finding date-related information. Selected cognitive abilities were found to impact different dependent measures. Working memory and flexibility of closure had effects on performance time, while visual memory and working memory had effects on user interactions involving manipulation of the visual field, such as scrolling and sorting.A field study was conducted to examine email practices related to handling messages that refer to pending tasks. Individual differences in message handling style were observed, with one group of users transferring such messages out of their email programs to other applications (e.g., calendars), while the other group kept prospective messages in email and used the inbox as a reminder of future events. This research contributes to understanding interactions among cognitive abilities, user interfaces and tasks. These interactions are essential for developing two types of interface: inclusive interfaces that work for users with a wide range of cognitive abilities, and personalized and adaptive interfaces that are fitted to individual characteristics. Two novel graphical user interfaces were designed to facilitate monitoring and retrieval of prospective information from email messages. The TaskView interface displayed task-laden messages on a two-dimensional grid (with time on the horizontal axis). The WebTaskMail interface retained the two-dimensional grid, but extended the representation of pending tasks (added distinction between events and to-do's with deadlines), a vertical date reading line, and more space for email message headers.

Résumé :
The “use” of information and library resources and services is frequently presented in Library and Information Science LIS) literature as a primitive concept: an idea so fundamental to the theoretical framework at hand as to be indefinable—even when presented as an operational variable. In fact, an examination of the LIS literature reveals that use is a multi-dimensional concept that requires clarification for effective empirical examination. This dissertation employs the Evolutionary Concept Analysis (ECA) method developed by nursing scholar Beth L. Rodgers (2000) to consider representations of use in a 200-item sample of LIS journal literature. ECA investigates the development of concepts by examining the attributes and characteristics of a concept as represented within a specific discipline (e.g., empathy as a concept in nursing) and within specific chronological, disciplinary, and theoretical contexts. Rather than to provide “the” definition of use, the purpose of this study is to illuminate the difficulties presented by the lack of clarity surrounding the use concept in LIS literature and practice. This process has produced a Typology of Use that can serve as a springboard to future empirical and theoretical projects in this area.

Résumé :
Purpose: The following research study is aimed at understanding the information practices of music fans, particularly fans of tango music and metal music in the city of Medellín. Design/methodology/approach: Based on three conceptual starting points, a social practice theory, the serious leisure perspective, and the information transfer model, a qualitative study was designed, with an exploratory and descriptive scope. In-depth interviews and observations were carried out with 18 music fans, 9 of tango music, 9 of metal music. The collected data was analized deductively using categories found on the conceptual models, and comparing it with the findings of a review of 50 previous studies found on the literature. Findings: The studies found on the literature suggest that up to this moment, music information behaviour has not been studied in a comprehensive manner, rather each activity has been viewed as isolated from others. The statements gathered from fans allow us to assert that an information practice is a coherent whole, all its activities are connected to each other and integrated with each person‟s lifestyle. Personal factors sucha as general understandings, values and world view are the ones that have greater incidence upon the practice, more so tan sociodemographic factors. A model for information practice is presented that describes all these elements. Originality/value: This study proposes a new theoretical and practical approach to the subject. The findings are an original and novel description upon which it is posible to conduct further studies.

This research project aims to raise awareness of the information needs and information seeking behavior of family members of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), since in this community the use of information is vital when making the best decision regarding their well-being and quality of life. The methodology used is of a qualitative type and is framed within the ELIS (Everyday Life Information Seeking) model proposed by Reijo Savolainen in 1995; to carry out this research, semi-structured and recorded interviews were conducted with 12 parents of people with ASD who have some relationship with the organization Aletea; this organization attends all kinds of consultations on this subject and tries to train family members and raise awareness about this spectrum to achieve a more inclusive and tolerant society. Also, at a previous stage, qualified informants of the Aletea organization were interviewed, as well as an important professional in health to better contextualize the problem of the use and management of information by these families, as well as to have a more insight clear of the existing advances and the improvements that are still necessary in this community. The results were rigorously analyzed based on categories and subcategories for a better understanding and separated by block according to the main subject to which they refer. Due to the scarce research production in Uruguay and the world on this specific issue, it is expected to contribute and give rise to new research to make this community visible and the obstacles they face daily. Résumé :
With the development of the Web and, consequently, of the digital libraries, open archives, repositories between other, new systems and information sources have been created, placing the users in a new search and information retrieval environment, characterized by the abundance of informational resources disposed in the hypertext format, increasing the access possibilities significantly. Ahead of this ‘information digital environment’, one of the Indexing Languages functions is to represent the information of the documents contained in these information systems, so that the user be capable to access that information for the use, communication and, mainly, for the generation of new knowledge. However, the problem-key of the Information Retrieval goes by the search of theoretical and methodological proceedings for the Information Organization and Representation. In other words, the principal problematic is to find means of improving the methods of Information Organization at the conceptual level, in way to increase the accessibility for the end-users. Ahead this, an exploratory study of theoretical analysis was proposed of some information search behavior models that, in agreement with the specialized literature, they are the ones that have larger impact in research terms in the area. Such models can be incorporate to the information thematic treatment processes, allowing to librarians and indexers the if give bill of the intervening variables in the search and information retrieval process of the users and, this way, that they understand the factors that affect the information organization and representation. As results are considered that an approach that tries to place the user in the center of the concerns in the Information Organization should appeal to the accumulated experience in the calls studies of users. It is ended that the studies about the users' information behaviors, that include the contextual factors that intervening in these behaviors, can contribute for the development of new systems and tools for the Information Organization and Representation, as well as for the use of the information, be in the academics/scientifics contexts or, still, in other types of organizations.

Résumé :
This study aimed to identify the relationship between information behaviour of managers and analysts in the credit risk sector and the organizational communication amongst them, within financial institutions from the federal government in Brazil, namely CAIXA Banco do Brasil S/A. Based on the work of Tubbs (2003), Wilson (1981) and Kunsch (2003), the conceptual model built up for the study suggests that variables of information behaviour of the subjects investigated should be taken into account in order to improve the communication process amongst them. Based on the authors studied, the study theoretical framework pointed the way to be followed in terms of methodological procedures. It has also been the base for the discussion of the research data. Qualitative and quantitative approached used, and the consequent triangulation of data through the use of questionnaires and interviews make possible to minimize some of the disadvantages of these research instruments. Driven by each specific objective, the study has allowed describing managers and analyst’s characteristics, the communication process amongst them, their information behaviour patterns and aspects of this behaviour that can be taken into account in the communication process within their organizations. Results show that managers and analysts of credit risks within federal governmental financial institutions in Brazil have higher education studies, mostly in Management, Account and Economics. They also have a good level of professional experience. In terms of the communication process, it should be highlighted that the internal communication is very intense and is essential for carrying out their professional activities. Quanto ao processo de comunicação, destaca-se que a comunicação interna é intensa entre os gestores e analistas de risco de crédito estudados, e essencial para realização das atividades de análise e avaliação de risco de crédito. Results obtained allowed identifying the major elements of the organizational communication process in the institutions studied. Regarding the information behaviour patterns, the study showed that the tasks performed by managers and analysts of credit risks have influence on their information needs, seeking and use. The study took account of the cognitive aspects of the information behaviour, only. The trial of finding a theoretical relationship between information behaviour as an input to communication has been an academic exercise within the context of the Post-Graduate Programme in Information Science at the University of Brasilia. From the results of the present study, it was possible to find out that knowing the information needs of colleagues and the way they seek and use information facilitates the communication with them. Therefore, information seeking and use patterns constitute an important factor for a good communication. It is therefore possible to state that, from the theoretical point of view, the present study added to previous ones that has focused this relationship. This, in turn, meets the approach of theorists like Belkin and Brookes, and positively adds to epistemological issues in Information Science. From the applied side, the study results shall be taking into account in both institutions studied. Its questionnaire has, in fact, been used as a model for services related to the communication process in one of them.

Résumé :
The increasing usage of the mobile web imposes new requirements on discovery tools of libraries. Therefore the North Rhine-Westphalian Library Center (hbz) sees the need of a mobile version of the hbz library portal "Digitale Bibliothek (DigiBib)" for the use by smartphones and tablet computers. The purpose of this master thesis is to identify the demands on a mobile version of the DigiBib with regard to functionality and content and particular emphasis on usability. The paper determines the current state of research concerning mobile web, mobile usability and mobile library applications. Furthermore, a quantitative survey was conducted with DigiBib users. The results show that a mobile DigiBib would be used predominantly by Android or iOS smartphones. The most important use case is the known item search, closely followed by the subject search. A single search box as well as multiple search boxes should be provided. Important usability requirements are the reduction of text input, which can be achieved through default and automatic completion of search terms as well as possibilities of data export. The availability check should contain a site-specific localization of libraries possessing the desired title. Also interlibrary loan is relevant for the mobile use of the DigiBib. Less important are links to databases and e-journals. Due to limited resources and in order to create platform independence, the mobile DigiBib should be developed as a web application.

Résumé :
Electronic journals are the most efficient scholar communication tools for academicians searching, keeping up with current affairs and publication of their works. Scientific journals are published in the 17th century for the first time. It is seen that the publishing of electronic journals is formed with technological developments in the 1990’s. Projects of many universities and professional groups begin to attribute publising of electronic journals. With the effect of open access electronic publishing begins to gain a different dimension These developments cause many researches on electronic journals. However, studies upon the features of electronic journals and usage causes affecting them are few. It is seen that especially with the development of the electronic journal publishing, studies on users in this subject began to increase. But still, there is not a study which aims to use the sources of different academicians from different disciplines. So our research aims to show the place of electronic journals in communication, the development of these sources up untill today and the effects of differences among disciplines on use of electronic journals. Furthermore, the findings which we obtain are compared with similar studies in literature. In this respect, the hypothesis of our research is as follows: “The academicians use of e-journals varies depending on -the discipline they are associated with, -the knowledge and experiments of the users and -the local factors.” In our research, literature survey, survey and interview techniques have been used. While the capacity of universe is 1428 academicians, sampling is made up of 249 persons. Sampling is divided into four disciplines which are science , engineering, social science and humanities. As a result of our study, it is seen that there are similarities and differences in the features of Ankara University academicians usage of electronic journals. It is found that engineers and sciencists use e-journals more excessively when compared to other disciplines. The human scientists are observed to be the group of academicians who use e-journals least. User preference in scientific journals, their attitutes towards the weak and strong sides of journals, their knowledge about open access, the states of benefiting from open access sources and the things which they pay attention while publishing an article change according to the discipline which they are associated with.

For this purpose, a log transaction analysis of the OPAC´s searches was done as a methodology. Three causes of searches with zero result were found: 1) Terms mismatched: words or phrases written correctly in search statements which do not match those used in the bibliographic description and subject terminology assigned to each bibliographic record. 2) Wrong writing in search statements due to typographical and spelling mistakes. 3) Wrong index selection: when a user selects a wrong index for his/her search statement. A more detailed analysis was done for each OPAC's index. Suggestions are offered regarding to reinforcement in OPAC searches training, improve search engine interface, and use of log transactions analisys of OPAC´s searches as a methodology to detect library materials demand not in its physical and virtual collections.

Résumé :
The study was motivated by the need to find out the factors that determined team based learning in tertiary institutions in Ede, Osun State, Nigeria. The researcher observed that the rate in which students in tertiary institutions get involved in team based learning is considerably high. It was also observed that very little has been done to assess the factors that determine the use of mobile technologies and academic and research libraries for team based learning by undergraduate students. The case study research method was adopted to carry out the study in three tertiary institutions in Ede, Osun State, Nigeria. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the one thousand one hundred undergraduate students that constituted the study’s sample population. The questionnaire was adopted as the study’s data collection instrument. The simple percentage score was used as the study’s data analysis technique. The study revealed three indicators of human factors namely, trust, sense of competition and willingness to share knowledge as the human factors that impact the extent to which mobile technologies are used to facilitate communication among members of team based learning groups. The study also revealed three indicators namely, space, rules outlawing group discussion and rules outlawing use of mobile technologies as factors prevalent in academic and research libraries that determine the use of academic and research library by members of team based learning groups. The study concludes that human factors are instrumental to the extent to which mobile technologies can support team based learning and that academic and research libraries must reassess their rules and regulations from the point of view the requirements of team based learning needs. Recommendations were made to students on how to manage human factors and academic and research libraries on how to implement rules that will not hamper team based learning. The study is useful to students, lecturers, librarians and administrators of tertiary institutions.

Résumé :
As to design new strategies for the quality improvement of all services offered by the Marcel Roche Library (MRL) of the Venezuelan Institute of Scientific Investigations (IVIC) this work studies the beginnings and evolution of quality management improvement reviewing some of the studies presented by some of the most outstanding authors in this subject as well as analyzing the basic components and principles of the total quality management (TQM). This document also focuses on the analysis of the nature, evolution, characteristics and importance of current services inside the manufacturing industries as well as service industries itself. Having these concepts in mind, service quality can be defined as a mayor factor in the progress of all corporations due to the increasing demands and expectation of costumers nowadays, they no longer evaluate quality as the final product but as the result of all processes involved in the delivering of the final product. This paper also refers to the incorporation of the philosophy of quality services into the library scope, and marketing and strategic planning notions are studied as the concretion of management towards quality. To determine the factors which affect service quality, elements of quantitative and qualitative investigations were used, employing direct observation, questionnaires and focal group interviews techniques, being the latter the mayor provider of real and instant information, which helped us identify the needs and expectations of users as well as the perception of employees of MRL. Conversations with both audiences allowed us not only to know their answers to each question but also to observe their reactions towards them, adding value to the interpretation of these answers by helping us identify emotional ties associated to the offering and use of services. At last, as a consequence of the results obtained in this study of factors which influence the offering of services at MRL, nine application areas were defined for which specific strategies and actions were designed. Such areas are: personnel, organization, collection development, information recovery, documents reproduction, users education, physical infrastructure and technological platform, automated system of library management and marketing. Résumé :
Information technologies are a fundamental part today within a library or information center, with the passage of time these centers or libraries must make use of these tools and resort to updating methods in order to maintain an optimal level in its heritage and increase the scope of information produced worldwide, this is thanks to the adaptation of information and communication technologies. The information centers make use of this important tool since, being for a specific user community, the databases also have special characteristics according to the needs that these users present. The objective of this study is to determine the level of use of digital resources, in this case the databases that are accessed by the agreements maintained by UNAM or those that are open access, this study is carried out carried out at the Library and Information Research Institute of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. The most relevant thing in this study will be to be able to identify who are the users (academic technicians or researchers) who make the most use of this information resource and the frequency in the usability of said databases to support themselves in the development of their research activities.

Résumé :
A study of scholarly communication, based upon written interviews with historians of colonial Brazil located in this country. It investigates the use of digitized rare books for the production of knowledge from 1995 to 2009, which corresponds to the first fifteen years of digitization projects in libraries, both research libraries and others. The goal of the present study was to verify to what extent the digitized rare books on the internet are part of the Historian´s scholarly communication process at the moment in Brazil and a possible impact factor on his research. It investigates the open access to information movement, going back to the seventeenth century, and considers the issue of the so-called "two cultures" in the sciences and the humanities. Responses create a profile of the historians studied, the use of printed and digitized collections, use of technology, aspects of the flow of information during the research process, and their knowledge of the open access movement. Among other findings, results showed that historians of colonial Brazil in this country extensively use technologies and do not feel pressured by them; find more barriers in using printed rare books than digitized rare books on the internet, but they are well aware that the digitized book does not substitute for the original printed copy. Access to digitized rare books was an impact factor on research and results may point to a possible threat to the printed book as the main tool for those historians. The majority is in favor to the Open Access Movement.

Résumé :
The issue of Biblioclasm is clearly ethical, because involves professional responsibility in the management of information. And, as a philosophical issue requires thinking in any categories of situational analysis. The elimination of texts at different levels could respond to the identity between the subjects and the information that they produce (or possibly require), hiding the desire of destroy both present and future possibilities that the knowledge open them. Through violent acts occurring in a real dimension, by substitution, is projected the symbolic destruction of a rival. Elucidation of the mechanisms operating in the relationship between subjectivity and information, illuminate the denied places of diverse speeches that are in conflict. Thus, it is proposed to analyze the phenomenon of biblioclasm through language as their main socio-analytic mediation, suggesting the addition of other disciplines (eg, anthropology, psychology, sociology) that contribute to the understanding of how some ancestral mechanisms are operate and subconscious, in the silencing of subjects.

Résumé :
In this thesis I examine the relationship with literacy constructed by the users of public libraries, such as, in this case, the José Vasconcelos Library in México city. As a central dimension of the ethnographic study, I analyze reading in groups as a social practice. I show how the José Vasconcelos Library as a public space is signified through various uses beyond the traditional practices to which many Library spaces are subjected. I describe some examples of the appropriation of public spaces and show how diverse practices are produced that involves literacy and written culture. I then analyze the relationships that are woven between different manners of reading and the activities and practices undertaken by several groups or collectives of readers who use the library as a meeting point to study, to read or to perform different activities in places that are available to the public. To approach this problem, I take into account a sociocultural concept of reading, which emerged from the New Literacy Studies. I considered “reading” not only as a cognitive competence, but also as a social tool.
