Résumé :
Seven species of freshwater Bryozoa (Ectoprocta) were collected from the lower Ottawa River near Montréal, Quebec: Lophopodella carteri (Hyatt), Plumatella repens (Linnaeus), Hyalinella punctata (Hancock), Paludicella articulata (Ehrenberg), Fredericella indica Annandale, Pectinatella magnifica (Leidy), and Cristatella mucedo Cuvier. Lophopodella carteri is reported from Canada for the first time, and this record represents a 300-km northward extension of its known range. Plumatella repens, H. punctata, F. indica, and P. articulata are new records for the province of Quebec. Bryozoan colonies were commonly associated with each other and with other macroinvertebrates, including freshwater sponges, molluscs, turbellarians, chironomid larvae, and caddisfly larvae. Larval caddisflies, Ceraclea (Trichoptera: Leptoceridae), and the microturbellarian Stenostomum (Turbellaria: Catenulida) were predators of living bryozoan colonies.

Résumé :
Background: The present study investigated the antifungal activity and mode of action of four Olea europaea leaf extracts, Thymus vulgaris essential oil (EO), and Boswellia carteri EO against Fusarium oxysporum. Methods:Fusarium oxysporum Lactucae was detected with the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. The chemical compositions of chloroform and dichloromethane extracts of O. europaea leaves and T. vulgaris EO were analyzed using GC-MS analysis. In addition, a molecular docking analysis was used to identify the expected ligands of these extracts against eleven F. oxysporum proteins. Results: The nucleotide sequence of the F. oxysporum Lactucae isolate was deposited in GenBank with Accession No. MT249304.1. The T. vulgaris EO, chloroform, dichloromethane and ethanol efficiently inhibited the growth at concentrations of 75.5 and 37.75 mg/mL, whereas ethyl acetate, and B. carteri EO did not exhibit antifungal activity. The GC-MS analysis revealed that the major and most vital compounds of the T. vulgaris EO, chloroform, and dichloromethane were thymol, carvacrol, tetratriacontane, and palmitic acid. Moreover, molecular modeling revealed the activity of these compounds against F. oxysporum. Conclusions: Chloroform, dichloromethane and ethanol, olive leaf extract, and T. vulgaris EO showed a strong effect against F. oxysporum. Consequently, this represents an appropriate natural source of biological compounds for use in healthcare. In addition, homology modeling and docking analysis are the best analyses for clarifying the mechanisms of antifungal activity.

Résumé :
In order to understand changes in cyclic adenylate levels of Volvox carteri during the process of sexual induction, we investigated the biochemical properties of its membrane-bound adenylyl cyclase. Membrane preparations possess low levels of Mg2+ -dependent or Mn2+ -dependent adenylyl cyclase activity. This activity was solubilised and then purified 7800-fold. The enzyme detergent complex has an apparent molecular mass of 100 kDa. Purified preparations contain a major ATP-binding protein of 33 kDa as shown by affinity labelling. The Mg2+ -dependent basal enzyme activity is regulated by Ca2+, and is highest in the presence of 10-7 M Ca2+, but is inhibited by Ca2+ above 10-5 M. La3+ at 10-4M also blocks activity. Neither calmodulin nor its antagonists affect the enzyme activity, nor do the purified preparations interact with immobilised calmodulin. Further mediators of G-protein action (NaF, or GTP and its derivatives) and forskolins have no influence on the basal activity of this plant enzyme. The function of adenylyl cyclase in sexual induction of Volvox is discussed.

Résumé :
Abstract. The varved sedimentary AD 1917–2004 record from the depositional center of the Santa Barbara Basin (SBB, California) was analyzed with monthly to annual resolution to yield relative abundances of six coccolithophore species representing at least 96% of the coccolithophore assemblage. Seasonal/annual relative abundances respond to climatic and surface hydrographic conditions in the SBB, whereby (i) the three species G. oceanica, H. carteri and F. profunda are characteristic of the strength of the northward flowing warm California Counter Current, (ii) the two species G. ericsonii and G. muellerae are associated with the cold equatorward flowing California Current, (iii) and E. huxleyi appears to be endemic to the SBB. Spectral analyses on relative abundances of these species show that all are influenced by the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and/or by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Increased relative abundances of G. oceanica and H. carteri are associated with warm ENSO events, G. muellerae responds to warm PDO events, and the abundance of G. ericsonii increases during cold PDO events. Morphometric parameters measured on E. huxleyi, G. muellerae and G. oceanica indicate increasing coccolithophore calcification from ~1917 until 2004 concomitant with rising pCO2 and sea surface temperature in the region of the SBB.

Résumé :
Abstract High abundances of coccoliths have been observed in surface sediment samples from near the coasts of the Oman Sea in February 2011. At the end of the NE monsoon, the locally observed high Gephyrocapsa oceanica production is hypothesized to respond to local injections of nutrient-rich deep water into the surface water due to sea-surface cooling leading to convection. The most abundant coccolithophore species are G. oceanica followed by Emiliania huxleyi, Helicosphaera carteri, Calcidiscus leptoporus. Some species, such as Gephyrocapsa muellerae, Gephyrocapsa ericsonii, Umbilicosphaera sibogae, Umbellosphaera tenuis and Florisphaera profunda, are rare. The G. oceanica suggested a prevalence of upwelling conditions or high supply of nutrients in the Oman Sea (especially West Jask) at the end of the NE monsoon. E. huxleyi showed low relative abundances at the end of the NE monsoon. Due to the location of the Oman Sea in low latitudes with high temperatures, we have observed low abundances of G. muellerae in the study area. Additionally, we have identified low abundances of G. ericsonii at the end of the NE monsoon. Helicosphaera carteri showed a clear negative response with decreasing amounts (relative abundances) at the end of the NE monsoon. C. leptoporus, U. sibogae and U. tenuis have very low relative abundances in the NE monsoon and declined extremely at the end of the NE monsoon. F. profunda, which is known to inhabit the lower photic zone (<100 m depht) was rarely observed in the samples.

V. carteri f. nagariensis is an established model for the study of the genetic basis underlying the acquisition of mechanisms of multicellularity and cellular differentiation. This microalga constitutes, in its most simplified form, a sphere built around and stabilised by a form of primitive extracellular matrix. Based on its structure and its ability to support surface cell adhesion most likely induced by the composition of its extracellular matrix, we have developed a modular approach to soft tissue engineering by compact-stacking of V. carteri colonies. V. carteri suspension demonstrated cytocompatibility, histogenesis promoting properties, and no induction of an inflammatory response in vitro, which allowed us to consider the use of V. carteri suspension colonies for soft tissue augmentation and to initiate the study of its in vivo biocompatibility. V. carteri exhibited cellular fate-directing properties, causing fibroblasts to take on an alkaline phosphatase+ stem-cell-like phenotype and both human adipose-derived stem cells and mouse embryonic stem cells to differentiate into preadipocytes to adipocytes. The ability of V. carteri to support histogenesis and adipogenesiswas also observed in vivo by subcutaneous tissue augmentation of athymic mice, highlighting the potential of V. carteri to support or influence tissue regeneration. The potential identified in V. carteri inspired us to develop other alternatives materials including plant-based polymers in the form of a cellulose and polyvinyl alcohol based composite hydrogel that we extensively characterised with the same intent of application as a substitute for soft tissue augmentation. We finally pursued the biomimetic approach by studying the feasibility of developing plant-based and V. carteri-based materials that would display its microsphere morphology and, additionally, its protein content. Our conclusion presents V. carteri as an innovative and inspiring biomaterial for tissue engineering and soft tissue regeneration. Its strategies in terms of shape, structure, and composition can be central in the design of a new generation of bio-inspired heterogeneous biomaterials, recapitulating more appropriately the complexity of the body tissues when guiding their regeneration

Résumé :
This study analyses The Passion of New Eve by Angela Carter, Orlando by Virginia Woolf, Woman on the Edge of Time by Marge Piercy and The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin from the perspective of é
criture fé
minine. After a thorough discussion of the roots of é
criture fé
minine, the theory of the French feminists is put into practice in the analysis of the novels. The study asserts that the concepts of bisexuality, the other and the voice are common elements in novels of é
criture fé
minine, thereby the novelists mentioned in the study follow the propositions of Hé

ne Cixous, Julia Kristeva and Lucé
Irigaray. The argument of the study is that the use of é
criture fé
minine as portrayed with reference to the novels, can be an efficient way in deconstructing the patriarchal system of language. Literature has a significant influence on social life, however women cannot make themselves heard using the language of patriarchy. Therefore an alternative such as é
criture fé
minine is essential. This study shows how this alternative can be practiced in various ways and it also creates the opportunity to consider the possibilities of alternative lives if this kind of thinking is widespread.

Résumé :
Abstract This chapter considers Carters ongoing efforts to broker peace in the Middle East. In order to bring Menachem Begin and Anwar Sadat together at Camp David to negotiate a peace agreement, Carter had to understand each personality and the needs of each nation, convince Jewish-American voters that he was on their side, and balance the US relationship with Arab countries for economic and national security reasons. When he sold F-15 fights jets to Saudi Arabia, Senator Abraham Ribicoff held a closed door meeting with Jewish members of the Senate to convince them that Carter would always keep Israel better armed than its Arab enemies. The chapter also considers problems at home, where he had to deal with Senator Ted Kennedy’s opposition to his national healthcare bill, which weakened Carter’s position in the Democratic party. In addition, although the United States had given asylum to famed Soviet novelist Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the Russian novelist made a powerful speech condemning the degradation of values in the hedonistic and wasteful West. Rosalynn Carter intended to answer him, and did so by defending the progress that the United States had made during the Carter administration.

Résumé :
Tosylates are among the least expensive, but also among the least reactive toward Pd(0) oxidative addition, of aryl sulfonates. Jie Wu of Fudan University has now devised conditions (J. Org. Chem. 2007, 72, 9346) for the Pd-catalyzed coupling of aryl tosylates such as 1 with arene trifluoroborates. Kei Manabe of RIKEN has found (Organic Lett. 2007, 9, 5593) that an ortho OH activates an adjacent Cl for Pd-mediated coupling, allowing the conversion of 4 to 6 . Philippe Uriac and Pierre van de Weghe of the Université de Rennes I have developed (Organic Lett. 2007, 9, 3623) conditions for the catalytic acylation of aryl halides with alkenyl acetates such as 8. Multi-component coupling lends itself well to diversity-oriented synthesis. As illustrated by the combination of 10 with 11 and 12 to give 13 reported (Organic Lett. 2007, 9, 5589) by Michael F. Greaney of the University of Edinburgh, benzynes can do double addition with high regiocontrol. For other recent references to unsymmetrical double additions to arynes, see Angew.Chem. Int. Ed. 2007, 46, 5921; Chem. Commun. 2007, 2405; and J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2006, 128, 14042. C-H functionalization of arenes is of increasing importance. John F. Hartwig of the University of Illinois has described (Organic Lett. 2007, 9, 757; 761) improved conditions for Ir-catalyzed meta borylation, and conditions for further coupling of the initial borate 16 to give amines such as 17. Lei Liu and Qing-Xiang Guo of the University of Science and Technology, Hefei have found (Tetrahedron Lett. 2007, 48, 5449) that oxygen can be used as the stoichiometric oxidant in the Pd-catalyzed functionalization of H’s ortho to anilides. Two other research groups (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2007, 129, 6066; Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2007, 46, 5554; J. Org. Chem. 2007, 72, 7720) reported advances in this area. In a close competition, Jin-Quan Yu, now at Scripps/La Jolla (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2007, 129, 3510) and Olafs Daugulis of the University of Houston (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2007, 129, 9879) both reported that a carboxyl group can activate an ortho H for direct functionalization.

Résumé :
This chapter argues that The Omen makes hay with a prejudice of a Roman Catholic conspiracy to gain control and enforce Satan’s will over nations of the world. It draws connections between the fictional Thorn dynasty and the Kennedy dynasty, with particular reference to John F. Kennedy and his Catholicism. It also places the film in post-Watergate context: the election of Democrat Jimmy Carter, who promised to challenge entrenched interests in Washington, and the ascent of Republican Ronald Reagan, who was instrumental to the ‘rightward turn’ in American politics and society. But for a film about the devil-child’s rise in the world of politics, The Omen is remarkable for its lack of engagement with world events and politics. This chapter also speculates about the extent to which star Gregory Peck, a liberal Democrat and Catholic, identified with the Robert Thorn character.

Résumé :
If vaudeville spoke so effectively to modern life and if it was so popular, why did it disappear after World War I? There was nothing inevitable about vaudeville’s decline; but its vulnerabilities were apparent even as it grew. As vaudeville became more popular, some entrepreneurs tried to separate their businesses from the mass of variety theaters by creating what they called the “big time,” a glitzier vaudeville based on palatial theaters, glamorous amenities and high-priced celebrities. Referencing characters like Fred Proctor, Edward F. Albee, and Sherman Dudley, this chapter shows how managers formed national chains and booking cartels and tried to strangle out their competitors. These tactics drove managers who could not secure enough affordable celebrity acts to reduce overhead by showing movies. The cost of ever-increasing glamor burdened “big time” chains with staggering overhead, something which made them vulnerable when the market contracted sharply after WWI. The cause of vaudeville’s decline was both structural and unrehearsed.

Résumé :
The single sideband (SSB) modulator described by Carter and Haus1 has limitations over a broadband frequencies. To maximize the output of their device with CdTe in a square waveguide, the beat frequency of the laser and the sideband are phase matched with the microwaves. The dimension of the guide a is determined by satisfying the equation where β1,2 are the propagation constants of the sideband and the laser beams respectively in CdTe at 10.6 μm, ϵ =7.2, ϵ μ =10.4. Equation(1) is satisfied for a =5.2 mm and f μ =16 GHz. When the microwave frequency deviates from this value , then the output is reduced according to the solution of the coupled-mode equations.1

Résumé :
The chemisorption of a mono-energetic molecular beams of F2 , Cl2, and Br2 onto a room temperature Si(111)-7x7 surface are examined using scanning tunneling microscopy and the resulting adsorbate structures are studied as a function of translational energy/chemisorption mechanism. For F2 chemisorption on Si(111)-7x7, there is no intrinsic physisorption state and therefore no island formation at low incident translational energy1. Instead at low translational energy (0.03eV), we observe that the dominant adsorption sites are single reacted adatoms (Si-F), while at higher translational energy (0.27eV) dimers/neighboring pairs of reacted adatoms are commonly observed. From previous work by the Ceyer2 and Carter3 groups, it is known that at low translational energy, F2 can adsorb via abstraction ( F2 collides, one F atom chemisorbs, the other is ejected into the gas phase), while at higher translational energies, dissociative chemisorption becomes the predominant adsorption mechanism. Our STM experiments, in conjunction with a simple Monte Carlo model, show that at low translational energy, the abstraction mechanism accounts for nearly all chemisorption of F2 because nearly all adsorption sites are single reacted adatoms. At higher translational energy, the dissociative chemisorption mechanism becomes important and the predominance for single site adsorption is greatly reduced while the occurrence of dimers/pairs of reacted adatoms is increased.

This negletc state produces a serious problem related to a wider phenomenon of abandonment of entire portions of italian territories. Realities that differ form the city because of their morphology: Does urban shape represent an urban limit? or is it an alternative testimony to the city? Research purpose is to understand how relationship, between these cases and the territory, works; in particular during the absence of the main component: the human one. The case study Santo Stefano di Sessanio, an ancient village in the center of Italy, inhabited until 90's, shows how the examination of urban shape represents the potentiality of his own revitalization. By relating his historical identity to the scattered hotel projectual approach, it contributes to combine conservation, valorization and sustainability of the existing building fabric, in order to claim the authenticity of these villages declaring their own autonomy and dimension to major urban centers polarization. In this example transformation is meant as conscious project that grow up from the built reality not from the project itself, transformation as knowledge of urban facts, tool to approach to the structure of this reality.
