Résumé :
The varied career of Adam Easton (c.1330—1397) led him from Norwich Cathedral Priory to Oxford, Avignon and Rome. Not only a monk of the Benedictine Order, he was also a scholar, theologian, diplomat and cardinal, and his work reflects the breadth of this multifaceted background. This volume presents recent research on Easton’s oeuvre, his diplomacy and the books that accompanied him on his travels. Amongst the works addressed in this volume are Easton’s Defensorium ecclesiastice potestatis, his Defensorium Sanctae Birgittae and his Office for the Feast of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. Further evidence is also offered on his testimony during the Great Schism, on the dating of his copy of De pauperie Salvatoris, while two reassessments are made of his likeness, including his sepulchral monument at S. Cecilia in Trastevere in Rome and the Lutterworth wall painting. Finally, a catalogue of Easton’s important manuscript collection is also provided.

Barrett, Kyle, dir. ReFocus : The Films of Mary Harron. Edinburgh University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474494410.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Mary Harron's diverse career includes cult films such as I Shot Andy Warhol, American Psycho and The Notorious Bettie Page, as well as a range of network and cable television episodes in innovative shows including Homicide: Life on the Street and Six Feet Under. This is the first book to examine an overlooked filmmaker in relation to feminist cinema, discussing the dialectical dynamics within her wide-ranging body of work. It is argued that Harron has fostered a distinctive career through her stylistic and aesthetic choices prompted by cultural contexts, controversial subject matter and production limitations. Each chapter provides an in-depth study on Harron's creative approaches to film and television production, with essays offering close readings of her 5 narrative features, television work, and promotional films. The book offers a robust examination, with scholarly approaches from the fields of cinema, television, gender, fashion, death and celebrity studies. This is a long-awaited and crucial introduction to a ground-breaking figure in contemporary cinema.`

Tuckett, Christopher. Women in the Gospels of Mark and Mary. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198814801.003.0008.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
While the Gospels of Mark and Mary are very different and neither gospel makes the role of women the prime focus of attention, the prominence of female characters is striking in both. This chapter explores how, despite their great differences, the two texts show a remarkable similarity in their depiction of Jesus’ women followers. In both, women take on crucial roles at the conclusion of Jesus’ earthly career. Although the original ending of Mark may suggest that the women disciples failed to communicate the message entrusted to them at the, this impression is countered by the later Markan endings and by most other post-Markan retellings of the tomb story. In the Gospel of Mary, Peter and Andrew’s attack on Mary is countered by Levi’s defence of her as a uniquely privileged disciple. Both Mark and the Gospel of Mary use women figures to present a message of discipleship.

Davey, Jennifer. Mary, Countess of Derby, and the Politics of Victorian Britain. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198786252.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Lady Mary Derby (1824–1900) occupied a pivotal position in Victorian politics, yet her activities have largely been overlooked or ignored. A Female Politician places Mary back into the political position she occupied and offers the first dedicated account of her career. Based on extensive archival research, including hitherto neglected or lost sources, this study reconstructs the political worlds Mary inhabited. Her political landscape was dominated by the machinations and intrigues of high politics and diplomacy. As this book uncovers, her political skill and acumen were highly valued by leading politicians of the day, including Benjamin Disraeli and William Gladstone, and she played a significant role in many of the key events of the mid-Victorian era. This included the passing of the Second Reform Act, the formation of Disraeli’s 1874 government, the Eastern Crisis of 1875–1878, and Gladstone’s 1880–1885 government. By exploring how one woman was able to exercise influence at the heart of Victorian politics, this book considers what Mary’s career tells us about the nature of political life in the mid nineteenth century. It sheds new light on the connections between informal and formal political culture, incorporating the politics of the home, letter-writing, and social relations into a consideration of the politics of Parliament and government. A Female Politician is a rich investigation of how a woman, with few legal or constitutional rights, was able to become a significant figure in mid-Victorian political life.

Résumé :
A short assessment of Jenkins’s legacy and the impact of the state-capital symbioses that his career exemplified. Jenkins had much in common with the richest person in Mexico of today, Carlos Slim, for both were wizards with numbers, fearless purchasers when others were panic-selling, monopolists, and beneficiaries of crony capitalism. The persistence of monopolistic plutocrats is something of a legacy of Jenkins’s career. Other legacies include the persistence in Puebla of autocratic governors affiliated to the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and the recurrence of gringophobia in the rhetoric of the nationalist left. A more positive legacy is the fruit of his philanthropy: the Mary Street Jenkins Foundation, still one of Mexico’s biggest charities, and the Universidad de las Américas-Puebla (UDLAP), one of Mexico’s leading universities.

Cooper, Brittney C. “Proper, Dignified Agitation”. University of Illinois Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252040993.003.0004.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This chapter recuperates Mary Church Terrell as a critical theorist of Black racial uplift. The first President of the NACW, Terrell went on to have a sixty-year career in Civil Rights activism. This chapter moves across the span of her career, mapping her development of a concept called “dignified agitation,” which she introduces in a 1913 speech. She returns to this formulation throughout her career, and the author argues that this idea of dignified agitation is one that she both learned and propagated as part of the NACW school of thought. But it also acts as a bridge concept, and she, as a bridge figure to Civil Rights era Black women intellectuals, who both respected the NACW school of thought and sought to move beyond it in critical ways. Because of the deliberate ways that Terrell wrote about her love of dancing in her autobiography, this chapter also considers the ways in which she is part of a genealogy of Black women’s pleasure politics, even though the current Black feminist discourse on pleasure typically focuses on blues women in this time period. Because Terrell is considered one of the foremost proselytizers of respectability, a turn toward her articulation of pleasure politics richly complicates the manner in which we read her as a theorist of racial resistance and gender progressivism.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Born into slavery during the Civil War, Mary Church Terrell (1863–1954) would become one of the most prominent activists of her time, with a career bridging the late nineteenth century to the civil rights movement of the 1950s. The first president of the National Association of Colored Women and a founding member of the NAACP, Terrell collaborated closely with the likes of Frederick Douglass, Ida B. Wells, and W. E. B. Du Bois. Unceasing Militant is the first full-length biography of Terrell, bringing her vibrant voice and personality to life. Though most accounts of Terrell focus almost exclusively on her public activism, Alison M. Parker also looks at the often turbulent, unexplored moments in her life to provide a more complete account of a woman dedicated to changing the culture and institutions that perpetuated inequality throughout the United States. Drawing on newly discovered letters and diaries, Parker weaves together the joys and struggles of Terrell's personal, private life with the challenges and achievements of her public, political career, producing a stunning portrait of an often-under recognized political leader.

Résumé :
In the Conclusion arguments are drawn together and the relevance of Anglo-Saxon reception studies to contemporary political events in 2017 is emphasized. It is argued that ‘Anglo-Saxon poetry’ is as much a category of discourse as it is a body of literature, and one which is continually in motion. The career of fossilist Mary Anning and her posthumous reception is invoked as analogous to the evolving construction of the past. Thomas Hardy’s knowledge of philology and Anglo-Saxon is briefly considered before Fossil Poetry concludes by critiquing Jones’s earlier book Strange Likeness and the way it figured Old English within modern poetic tradition.

Résumé :
10 Strategies for Reentering the Workforce: Career Advice for Anyone Who Needs a Good (or Better) Job Now is an easy-to-read guide for anyone who needs to reenter the workforce because of economic necessity, a plant closing, corporate downsizing, divorce, injury, or other life-changing circumstance–including the simple desire for a new challenge. Expert career counselor Mary E. Ghilani identifies each type of career changer and discusses the unique challenges each group faces, the options available to them, and strategies for finding a new job or successfully returning to school to upgrade skills. The book also offers numerous ways to overcome obstacles and defeat the common yes, buts that prevent people from achieving a satisfactory work life. This book will directly help unemployed and mid-career workers who need to find a better job quickly to keep their heads above water. But it will also be of great service to those who can take some time to completely reassess where they are and where they are going. In her practice as director of a career center, Ghilani often hears common laments like, I wish I had a job that… or I always wanted to be a… These statements are usually followed up with, But now it’s too late, or, I don’t have the skills, or, It will take too long or cost too much. Her response: Do work that you enjoy for the remaining working years of your life, even if it means going back to school or starting at the bottom of the ladder. That, she explains, is a much better alternative to toiling unhappily while awaiting retirement. Besides great advice, the book also contains hands-on tools for figuring out what constitutes a great job, sample resumes and cover letters, and a list of Web sites catering to those eager to reenter the workforce or find a better job.

Résumé :
Gret Palucca quickly ascended to dance stardom in the 1920s. Born in 1902, Palucca received her dance training at Mary Wigman's pioneering Dresden studio in the early 1920s and was among the first generation of Wigman students to go on to innovate in the world of dance. During her career ascent, Palucca positioned herself in close proximity to visual artists, and she especially touted her relationship with artists at the Bauhaus, the innovative school for art and design in Weimar Germany. This chapter examines the visual images of Palucca created by students and teachers at the Bauhaus. In so doing, it challenges the standard literature that associates Bauhaus dance exclusively with dance choreographer Oskar Schlemmer.
