Attar, Dena Wardah. « Women reading online : the gendered process of developing new literacy practices ». Thesis, University of Sussex, 2003. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.288612.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis examines the experiences of women becoming Internet users and readers of online texts. Millions of women in the UK began to access websites and exchange emails for the first time in the late 1990s and beginning of the 215' century. The existence of a gender gap amongst earlier adopters revealed that there must be particular obstacles facing women as new users and readers, which the thesis sets out to investigate using a multi-disciplinary approach and a range of research methods. The data is drawn from three distinct sources. First, sixteen female and six male readers were observed and interviewed while accessing their own choice of websites. This produced data on texts-in-use in conjunction with audiotaped literacy events, taking the method pioneered in schools by the Fact and Fiction Project, in its study of gender and literacy, in a new direction. Secondly, data on adult women learning to use the Internet was gathered in the form of a reflexive account of teaching beginners' classes between 2000 and 2002 at an inner-London public access location. Thirdly, women's reactions to one specific online text, an emailed petition about women in Afghanistan, were explored through an analysis of emails and comments made in interviews. The analysis situates reading online as a socially constructed literacy practice while stressing the distinctiveness of individual literacy events. It is argued that some events have particular significance, impeding or assisting the process of developing a repertoire of new literacy practices. The obstacles women face are identified as linked to the dominance of particular online texts, gendered power relations in the home and workplace, and previous educational experiences. Opportunities to create as well as read, and feeling sufficiently in control of work, access and technology, are identified as key factors in becoming a confident online reader

Gee, Stacey. « 'At the sygne of the cardynalle's hat' : the book trade and the market for books in Yorkshire, c. 1450-1550 ». Thesis, University of York, 1999. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/9792/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This case study of the production and use of books in Yorkshire in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries has two main aims. The first aim is to investigate the relationship between book production and book ownership in Yorkshire during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Unlike the methodology of this thesis, previous studies have usually studied the book trade and the market for books separately. By focusing on both book production and use, this study shows that it is not usually possible to argue from the evidence of one to the other. In order to comprehend both book trade networks and the reading public they served, it is necessary to investigate them together. The second aim of this thesis is to investigate how the book trade was affected by socio-economic and religious changes, in particular, the early years of the Reformation and the new technology of print. Using the evidence of the franchise register of York and guild ordinances and other sources, I show that speculative book production in York became more important after the advent of print. As a result of the self-protecting activities of the London booksellers and printers, however, by the mid-sixteenth century the York book trade was predominantly a service industry. Some previous studies have argued that major changes also took place in levels of literacy and methods of reading during this period. Yet the evidence of Yorkshire wills and inventories indicates that the early religious reforms and the advent of print did not affect the ownership of books to any significant extent. A straight-forward contrast between manuscript culture and print culture is therefore too simplistic and we must consider the variety of ways in which books were acquired and used.

Laugle, Kelly M. « Measuring the alphabetic principle : Mapping behaviors onto theory ». Thesis, University of Oregon, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/10331.

Research suggests that development of the alphabetic principle is a critical factor in learning to recognize words and becoming a successful reader. The alphabetic principle encompasses both the understanding that relationships exist between letters and sounds and the application of these relationships to reading words. This study investigated the degree to which different measures of the alphabetic principle were predictive of later reading development. These measures were examined in the context of Ehri's phase theory of sight word development to investigate how different behaviors associated with the alphabetic principle fit within a developmental framework. Two cohorts of students (109 kindergarteners, 212 first graders) participated in this study from spring of 2007 until late fall of 2008 (58 second graders, 121 third graders). The predictive powers of single and combined measures of the alphabetic principle were analyzed using sequential regression. Results indicated that each measure explained significant between-student variation in performance on measures of word reading fluency, oral reading fluency (ORF), vocabulary, and reading comprehension. A measure of letter-sounds embedded in nonsense words appeared to have more utility for the prediction of reading outcomes than a measure of letter-sounds presented in isolation. Additionally, including a measure of nonsense words with a measure of letter-sounds embedded in nonsense words increased the predictive power of the model over and above the predictive power of letter sounds alone. Growth on ORF served as an additional criterion for the purpose of investigating the methodology of measuring growth. Two conceptualizations of growth were explored: raw score change over time and individual rates of growth over time (slope). Correlations and sequential regression were used to evaluate the relationship between raw score change and measures of the alphabetic principle. Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) was used to model individual slopes on Lexile measures of ORF (LORF). In general, raw score change appeared largely unrelated to measures of the alphabetic principle. HLM analyses revealed that individual differences in slope on LORF were minimal and not very reliable, making the prediction of these differences difficult. Recommendations for future research and implications for practice are discussed.

Shrestha, Nina. « A Study on Students Use of Library Resources and Self-efficacy ». Thesis, 2008. http://eprints.rclis.org/22623/1/NinaShrestha.pdf.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This study has been undertaken to determine the "Students use of the library resources and self-efficacy". This study has tried to find out the information seeking behavior of the graduate level students and their knowledge about the library resources and services made available to them. And how their familiarity with the resources and technology develops self-efficacy. The study has tried to find out how the integration of the Internet has affected the information searching habit on students. The study has collected empirical data on the information searching behavior of the students of the three respective colleges taken under study they are Thapathali College, NCCS(National College of Computer Science) and Kathmandu University. These data has been gathered from 25% of the actually targeted group of study. Questionnaire method has been obtained to collect primary data from the 200 full time students of which 127 has been returned which is the exact number of questionnaire tabulated for the study. After tabulating and analyzing the data the findings of the study indicated that students are most in the need of intervention as they often come to college unprepared. The guidance in the use of library resources and services is necessary to help students meet some of the information requirements. It is also found that library books, e-journals and Internet are the most popular source of information for the course work and research and the place of Google in the student’s information behavior is prominent and positively co-related to use of traditional library resources. The study shows that in today’s fast paced world the desire for expediency has promoted students to place a premium on information that can be found easily and quickly. To this end, many students limit their search to electronic resources, choosing format over substance and convenience over accuracy. In particular reliance on the world wide web as a primary and often sole research tool has impacted the quality and rigor of students projects and reduced students familiarity with more traditional print resources and bibliographical databases in their college library collection. Internet has rapidly become one of the most powerful global sources of wide range of information presenting many possibilities for the efficient and unlimited dissemination of information. It has contributed positively in enhancing the search effectiveness. Which has lead to giving students psychological boost and problem solving ability. The newfound confidence due to the easily accessible information resources has upgraded the learning ways among them. Students have become more competent and confident about what they could achieve in the given situations and knowledgeable about the ways that leads to the achievement. With the popularity of the electronic resources as the major information sources the study has also found that all the libraries is automated with some having their own online catalogue system with subscription to electronic journal sites and bibliographic indexes. Even if the library did not have various electronic resources they gave Internet services through computer labs and online catalogue. But without proper knowledge of accessing the information sources both electronic or print students are vulnerable to the overloaded information and was not seen so much keen on using the library’s electronic resources they preferred internet resources as its interface is easy to use and they could get unlimited information on the subjects. Proper guidance and lack of professional person along with the inadequate collection in the material as well as insufficient networking computers has been the main drawbacks on students exploring the resources. For them to be more interested towards libraries librarians along with the faculty members need to work together in educating them about the services and resources that is available and library should also work towards networking with other libraries so that it could provide better range of materials in given subject. In this study even though students are drawn to information sources that allow them to complete their research in “the easiest least painful way” the large percent of students are still motivated to learn about accessing their present library resources. With such a strong bias among students towards using the web as their primary research tool, library instruction should be considered a crucial means of introducing students to print resources of the library beside the web. Numerous studies have shown that positive change in student’s research skills and knowledge of the library and its resources after library instruction. This study has also tried to point towards that aspect of the library where it could educate its users by giving orientation so they can become an accurate searcher and make use of the right information at the right time.

Résumé :
Social networks are most commonly seen as a technology used only for entertainment purposes. However, they can also be used for serious purposes in business and education environments because they are powerful tools that can accomplish various roles and purposes. It is important to do research on them from an information system and information science point of view by analyzing user information behavior so we can see trends and issues in behavior in connection with these systems. This research aim was to explore how Web 2.0 and social networks are having an effect on users’ information behavior. The method used for the collection of data was a semi structured interview, containing questions constructed according to the issues of Web 2.0 and social networks identified on the literature, along with typical features or characteristics of social networks. Purposive sampling was used, the interview participants selected were four teachers and four second year students of the DILL Master Course. This sample was selected according to the criteria that they had to have a professional background on information science and knowledge and skills about using social networks. The method for analyzing data was discourse analysis and a framework of categories was created to present the data in a certain order. This study identified various trends and tendencies in users’ information behavior and some future directions for research were proposed. Findings of this type of study provide insights to users’ information behavior in information systems, they could contribute to a better understanding of the users and to the design of such systems; this is relevant when it is necessary to build information systems from the point of view of users needs and behaviors, that is, by taking a bottom-up approach.

Résumé :
This thesis discusses the ability of students of library and information science (LIS) department, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN), Jakarta who were enrolled in 2007, in searching and evaluating internet-based information. This research uses a quantitative approach with a questionnaire as the research instrument. The result shows that the students’ ability in searching and evaluating internet-based information is low which means that their information literacy is also low. Based on this research’s result the writer suggests that LIS department of UIN should collaborate with UIN’s central library to increase the frequency of information literacy programs, by holding more seminars and workshops; the writer also suggests the need to include information literacy education in the curriculum of LIS department, and in other departments too. Both LIS department and UIN central library need to have additional qualified human resources who are ready to teach and to socialize information literacy programs.

Résumé :
It intends to investigate the possibilities of virtual learning platforms as enabling environments for promoting information skills. For this study, is taken as reference the case of Virtual Learning Environment (EVA) at the Universidad de la República (UdelaR) and analyzed from the conceptual framework of information literacy. Virtual learning environments have widespread use in university education, their use reveals the possibility of new forms of learning, placing the student as the protagonist of the learning process. It’s because of this fact, which new questions appears about the teaching-learning process involving different aspects. Based on the principles of information science, this research focuses on the linked virtual environment issues (as a new context in which it is taught and learned) and information literacy from the perspective of information development skills mediated by the use of these platforms. The characteristics of information skills is analyzed and strategies for developing them in virtual environments is proposed. Qualitative methodology is used by performing a triangulation between bibliographic survey and systematization of information literacy in virtual environments, interviews and a case study. Based on documentary research on the core issues and transverse to the problem analysis categories (which represents information skills) that are tested through a case study with the EVA platform is proposed. This analysis is complemented by conducting interviews related to the Universidad de la República’s learning platform qualified informants. At the same time it carried out a survey and systematization of the main features of national and international information literacy experiences in virtual environments. Results highlights a number of characteristics of virtual learning environments that can promote the information skill development using the same as mediators and creating content that address the particularities of these environments. The need for university libraries are present in virtual learning environments it is observed as a must. It is expected that the results of the investigation, which specify alternatives for the promotion of a range of skills in information constitute useful inputs to generate information literacy programs through virtual environments. While obtaining new theoretical elements in the area of information literacy contribute to the training of future professionals of information that will have a national view of the problem in the context of the Universidad de la República. More specifically in the area of activity of the Facultad de Información y Comunicación is to contribute to the development of the research on information literacy, carried out under the PRODIC.

Résumé :
With the development of the Web and, consequently, of the digital libraries, open archives, repositories between other, new systems and information sources have been created, placing the users in a new search and information retrieval environment, characterized by the abundance of informational resources disposed in the hypertext format, increasing the access possibilities significantly. Ahead of this ‘information digital environment’, one of the Indexing Languages functions is to represent the information of the documents contained in these information systems, so that the user be capable to access that information for the use, communication and, mainly, for the generation of new knowledge. However, the problem-key of the Information Retrieval goes by the search of theoretical and methodological proceedings for the Information Organization and Representation. In other words, the principal problematic is to find means of improving the methods of Information Organization at the conceptual level, in way to increase the accessibility for the end-users. Ahead this, an exploratory study of theoretical analysis was proposed of some information search behavior models that, in agreement with the specialized literature, they are the ones that have larger impact in research terms in the area. Such models can be incorporate to the information thematic treatment processes, allowing to librarians and indexers the if give bill of the intervening variables in the search and information retrieval process of the users and, this way, that they understand the factors that affect the information organization and representation. As results are considered that an approach that tries to place the user in the center of the concerns in the Information Organization should appeal to the accumulated experience in the calls studies of users. It is ended that the studies about the users' information behaviors, that include the contextual factors that intervening in these behaviors, can contribute for the development of new systems and tools for the Information Organization and Representation, as well as for the use of the information, be in the academics/scientifics contexts or, still, in other types of organizations.

First, bibliotherapy is seen in context with other forms of therapy and with regard to how they interact. Then, the history of bibliotherapy is outlined. To find a meaningful set of definitions, a special model is used. This part is continued with an examination of possible content, forms, addressees and approached problems in bibliotherapy. As a method of research, a review of current journals in the field of behavioural medicine and psychiatry as well as traditional literature in the field is undertaken. Then, the way in which users can find health sites of high quality on the internet is discussed with special reference to consumer protection, legal and ethical issues. Information from interviews with librarians and other key-players in the field are used to highlight the Austrian situation regarding bibliotherapy and public libraries. Finally, some current developments in the UK are discussed. The findings suggest that there are mainly two ways of seeing bibliotherapy today. One is concerned with therapy using the written word, which can also be literature or poetry and therefore, in which librarians can play an important role. The other is more concerned with self-help manuals and here usually cognitive behavioural therapists or physicians are clearly involved and models of co-operations with libraries are developing.

Résumé :
This research project aims to raise awareness of the information needs and information seeking behavior of family members of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), since in this community the use of information is vital when making the best decision regarding their well-being and quality of life. The methodology used is of a qualitative type and is framed within the ELIS (Everyday Life Information Seeking) model proposed by Reijo Savolainen in 1995; to carry out this research, semi-structured and recorded interviews were conducted with 12 parents of people with ASD who have some relationship with the organization Aletea; this organization attends all kinds of consultations on this subject and tries to train family members and raise awareness about this spectrum to achieve a more inclusive and tolerant society. Also, at a previous stage, qualified informants of the Aletea organization were interviewed, as well as an important professional in health to better contextualize the problem of the use and management of information by these families, as well as to have a more insight clear of the existing advances and the improvements that are still necessary in this community. The results were rigorously analyzed based on categories and subcategories for a better understanding and separated by block according to the main subject to which they refer. Due to the scarce research production in Uruguay and the world on this specific issue, it is expected to contribute and give rise to new research to make this community visible and the obstacles they face daily. Résumé :
The present research, of qualitative and quantitative nature, presents the validation of the psychometric properties, a survey that measures the self-perception of the informational competences of a group of students of the Industrial Civil Engineering program at Universidad de La Serena, Coquimbo Region, Chile. In the context of Chilean higher education, a valid instrument to determine the development level of informational competencies doesn't exist. These informational competences are an essential tool in the teaching and learning process in higher education. This work develops a comprehensive framework that provides the theoretical foundation for the concepts of informational competencies and validation of a measuring instrument. The expert judgment procedure or the face validity method is used to determine the content validity of the survey. As well, the Cronbach Alpha internal consistency method is used to evaluate the reliability level of the instrument. The results of both processes are analysed and the conclusions of the study are presented. Finally, this research presents an approach for training of the informational competencies for surveyed students, through a practical training course.

Résumé :
The aim of this research is to detect different sources that researchers use most frequently in their doctoral theses and assess the local needs of library users. Analysis citations in academic publications is a very interesting method when you need to know how the information is used by researchers. Bibliographical references of thesis can offer us a very detailed view of the use of the library collection. This method has been complemented with users opinion collected in a questionnaire. Combination of these two techniques has helped reduce the subjectivity inherent in data analysis. The study shows that the authors of the doctoral theses cite almost in the same proportion both magazine articles and monographs. PhD's students at the University of Balearic island do not use much the library catalog but instead they use the Internet as a valuable source for writing their thesis.
