Résumé :
Pairing Vergil’s Latin poem, the Georgics, with Golden, a 2012 painting by Brian Britigan, I explore the sexualities and ecologies of animal bodies. First, I argue that Golden responds to the “bugonias” of the Georgics, scenes in which a dead ox spontaneously generates bees. Through the image of one species emerging from another Vergil and Britigan queer straight ideas of reproduction in different ways. Vergil’s queering is processual, describing bugonia as a collision of human and nonhuman bodies and practices. In Britigan’s paintings, which omit human figures, queerness is stylistic. Britigan pays homage to the foundational work of Thomas Hart Benton while reworking Benton’s beliefs about sex/gender and sexuality. Painted just a few years after CCD devastated the world’s honeybees, Golden poignantly represents the hope of life even after extinction. While earlier criticizing Britigan’s human-less nature, I conclude by considering that the regeneration of life may require our absence.

Roughly half way through the fourth Georgic, Virgil confronts a sad reality: on occasion the entire population of a hive can perish without warning and leave the bee-keeping farmer bee-less. In response to such a devastating loss, the poet describes an Egyptian procedure, to which modern critics have given the name bugonia, whereby the farmer acquires a new swarm of bees from the putrefying carcass of a dead ox (4.281–314). After the account of bugonia, the poem takes a notoriously unexpected turn. Virgil asks the Muses about the origins of this practice and then recounts the exploits of Aristaeus, an inhabitant of the georgic world whose own bees once succumbed to famine and disease. In the narrative that follows, Aristaeus consults his mother Cyrene and the seer Proteus, who tells him about Orpheus’ descent to the underworld. The narrative ends when Aristaeus, thanks to the teaching of his mother, performs a series of activities that culminates in a new swarm of bees bursting forth from the putrefying carcass of a dead ox (4.315–558). The aetiological character of the Aristaeus narrative is clear—Virgil promises to trace the Egyptian procedure back to its first origo (4.286), and when he addresses the Muses, he specifically asks what god discovered the practice and whence it took its first beginnings (4.315–16). But for what activity does the story actually offer an aition?

Autor publicira dvije oltarne pale iz župne crkve sv. Vida i Modesta u Trstenom kraj Dubrovnika. Dominikom, sv. Katarinom Sijenskom, sv. Vidom i sv. Modestom.

Refugees who are settled around Bugoma Central Forest Reserve in Kyangwali Sub-County, Kikuube District have influenced the conservation and protection of the forest ecosystem. Adopting a cross-section research design, 265 respondents from Kyangwali Sub-County, Kikuube District were involved in the study using a questionnaire survey. Findings revealed an increase in charcoal burning by 26.4% and an increase in the cultivation of crops in Bugoma Central Forest Reserve by 19.6%. These activities are responsible for increasing vegetation cover within Bugoma CFR. There is increasing stone quarrying at 38.5% and agricultural intensification in some catchment areas (41.8%) within the Bugoma Central Forest Reserve. There is increasing forest degradation in Bugoma Central Forest Reserve by refugees. The Government of Uganda should enforce strict rules when resettling refugees to ensure that they don’t encroach on the forest reserves near their settlement.

Résumé :
We carried out a survey of Nahan’s Partridge Ptilopachus nahani in the Ugandan forests of Mabira, Bugoma, and Budongo from December 2016 to December 2017, using a point count method employing a call playback technique. The aim was to establish the population status of this globally threatened species, which was last surveyed in 2003. Separate analyses of the number of groups per point and those involving use of the Distance Program yielded the same density estimates, indicating that either method reliably estimates the density of the species. The density estimates for the three reserves were 31.6, 25.2, and 13.3 groups per km2 for Bugoma, Budongo, and Mabira forest reserves, respectively. In the last 14 years, it appears that the density of the species for Uganda has increased from 16.3 to 23.4 groups per km2, which when extrapolated translates to 16,000 and 23,000 groups, respectively. This represents a 44% increase in density, or a group growth rate of 450 per year. The lowest density and population increment was registered in Mabira and we attribute this to the apparently high incidence of disturbance and degradation of this forest compared to the other two. Since Mabira, Bugoma, and Budongo are the only remaining large tropical rainforest reserves in Uganda, strengthening their conservation or upgrading their conservation status to national parks is required to save the species.

Résumé :
This chapter examines the category and type of beehive. It investigates how to approach the bees and begin relating to them. All together in the hive, the bees can seem quite full of chaos, the very opposite of reason. The chapter delves into what kind of looking—what kind of scrutiny, what quality of attention—should the author be aiming for—what kind of gaze is good. It then reviews how to learn something about the colony as a whole by separating it out, piece by piece. A hive is not a factory, and a bee is not a machine part. The author seeks to understand her bodily experience—how it feels to be a bee going about in the world, with hooked knees and curling tongue, eyes and sting and armor plating. The chapter chronicles old rituals and traditions employed to attract wild colonies. It particularly discusses the ancient Mediterranean belief in the practice of bugonia, the spontaneous generation of a swarm from an ox or bull carcass. The chapter lays out detailed instructions for this task.
