Texte intégralAn empirical analysis on the applicability of multigrid techniques to system modeling using system identification techniques is presented. Multigrid with the Toeplitz approximation algorithm is used to model an infinite impulse response (FIR) system with a finite impulse response (FIR) model. Matrix analysis experiments are conducted on the Toeplitz iteration matrix. A comparison of alternative multigrid operators for solving the system modeling problem is presented. The extension of multigrid techniques to system modeling of odd order filters is explored. Computer simulations are developed for analyzing the effectiveness of multigrid techniques in system modeling.

Texte intégrals foreign policy by referencing their reports, articles, interviews and seminars. The study had four aims. First, it aims to analyze the JDP&rsquo
s foreign policy in the eyes of the two think tanks. Second, it shows the objective of the two institutions for shaping the framework of the discussions on the United States-Turkey relations and Turkish foreign policy by emphasizing the epistemic community. Third, this thesis intends to clarify divergences and convergences in the perceptions of the two think tanks. Fourth, it indicates the continuity, change and rupture in the JDP&rsquo
s foreign policy choices from the viewpoint of the Brookings Institution and the Council on Foreign Relations. Consequently, the thesis states that &ldquo
the given framework&rdquo
in the relations between the United States and Turkey has been largely determined by the U.S.&rsquo

The synagogue has always played a crucial role in the life of the Jewish people. It is the embodiment of a religion which dates its proud past as stemming from the beginning of creation. Nevertheless, the passing of time has not diminished the people's fervor in the observation of age-old customs, traditions, and laws. However. the Jewish people are flexible enough to acknowledge the changes inherent in the passing of time. This concept of time. a respect for the past and an awareness of the present with a projection for the future, is paramount in the architectural development of the synagogue. Throughout the years. synagogue planners have considered this melding of the present with the past, modernity with antiquity as a reflection of the needs of its people at a given time. Fundamental to the design of my synagogue is what I consider its three-fold purpose: a House of Prayer, a House of Study, and a House of Assembly -- all coalescing to serve the spiritual, intellectual, and social needs of the people. It will consider the necessity of continuity without sacrificing the need for versatility and adaptability, all within the parameters of its utilitarian needs. While ancient symbols, traditional artifacts, and alter objects should be visible, even that which is not visible but revered even more will be lovingly, albeit subtly. evident. Thus. G- d's presence will be manifested within the symbolic design concepts, the lofty structural innovations, the light and shadow imagery. The most modern artistic and architectural techniques will be utilized to create a beautiful, utilitarian, versatile synagogue, adaptable to the changing needs of its community. Thus, this synagogue can play a most important role in keeping our religion timely and timeless.

Texte intégralStingrays of the Potamotrygonidae family (Chondrichthyes: Myliobatoidei) are endemic elasmobranchs of river systems in the Neotropics. In these hosts a reside diverse fauna of parasite which includes many genera of tapeworms (Cestoda). Both stingrays and their cestodes are derived from marine ancestors. However, the taxonomy and systematics of this host/parasite system is poorly known. This study documents, for the first time, the molecular diversity of Potamotrygonocestus lineages by employing the direct optimization of 28S rDNA, ITS1 rDNA, Calmodulin and Cytochrome Oxidase I genes. The goal of this study is to understand the phylogenetic position of its members within a cladistic analysis. The results support the monophyly of the genus Potamotrygonocestus and recovered two main clades morphologically diagnosed based on hook morphology hook. The phylogenetic hypothesis presented supports the contention that P. chaoi and P. marajoara are junior synonyms of P. travassosi, and P. orinoconoensis should be considered a valid specie. Additionally, the results suggest that there are 14 new lineages that can be raised to the level of species. Members of Potamotrygonocestus proved to be more host specific than previously thought and, in relation to its biogeography, the phylogenetic hypothesis presented mirrors similar patterns of area association reported for many members of the Neotropical ichthyofauna. The expansion of biogeographical representativeness and inclusion of the molecular data in systematics of the genus allowed the recognition of distribution and infestation patterns that were previously unknown. This refinement could be interesting for other potamotrigonids genus parasites

Texte intégralThe members of the Potamotrygonocestus genus (Eucestoda: Tetraphyllidea: Onchobothriidae) are parasites that infect exclusively the stingrays of the family Potamotrygonidae, which are endemic of the Neotropical region. To date, seven species are recognized for this genus (P. magdalenensis, P. travassosi, P. amazonensis, P. maurae, P. fitzgeraldae, P. chaoi and P.marajoara) and two undescribed lineages were cited in the last taxonomic revision published. The taxonomy of these parasites is traditionally based on morphometric characters and therefore relies on soft tissue structures whose observed morphology is highly dependent on the fixation method used. This, in addition to the use of a restricted number of specimens from distant localities on taxonomic studies, led researchers to believe in a low morphological variation for the genus. In this study, 1753 Potamotrygonocestus specimens were examined from almost all of the South American basins. The traditional morphometric parameters for the genus taxonomy were not useful for species diagnosis, but the discrete parameters from the morphology of the hooks were shown to be informative characters. The hooks are sclerotized structures and its shape is not dependent on the fixation of the specimen, therefore having a great potential to distinguish species. Based on the morphology of the hooks, the Potamotrygonocestus nominal species that were recognized were redescribed and four new lineages were found. Among all the taxa examined, only P. chaoi e P. marajoara still need a detailed diagnosis, because it was not possible to distinguish these two species based on the morphology of the hooks. Based on the data at hand, an inference key for species of Potamotrygonocestus is proposed based on the morphology of the hooks. Among the 32 potamotrygonids morphotypes obtained for this study, only five were not infected by Potamotrygonocestus. These hosts were restricted to the Madeira and Purus basins and for P.leopoldi from the Xingu River. The host-specificity observed for the parasite worms of marine elasmobranchs closely related to Potamotrygonocestus were nor found in this freshwater genus Additionally, more than one species of Potamotrygonocestus were found infecting the same host specimen, an occurrence never noted for this parasite taxon.

Texte intégralDuring this study, we have synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles by soft routes in aqueous media. Anatase, brookite and rutile have been obtained in pure phases, with well-defined size and morphology. Thermal treatments were conducted at temperatures ranging from 500 to 750°C to study particles sintering. We have observed the influence of initial morphology on particles sintering. We also have shown that the anatase → rutile and brookite → rutile phase transition and kinetic were modified by initial morpholgy of particules, but also by annealing gas atmosphere and by the presence of impurities on the particles. This last result was used in a second point to thermically stabilized anatase and brookite nanoparticles by lanthanum doping. Particles have been characterized by numerous techniques, such as high resolution transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analyses and differential scanning calorimetry. X-ray diffraction was widely used to characterize sizes, morphologies and phase transition during sintering

This dissertation analyzes the effects of Congressional redistricting in the United States using the Brookes Method, developed by R.H. Brookes, a New Zealand political scientist. The Brookes Method disaggregates electoral bias into five separate components. My analysis shows that the party winning control of the House benefits from the most prevalent component of bias but that Democrats persistently benefit from the next most prevalent component. This means that Republicans can never win the House as effectively as Democrats can. The Brookes Method also informs electoral bias pertaining to racial gerrymandering. Using the Brookes Method to evaluate three states with a history of using extremes in race-based redistricting (Georgia, Louisiana, and North Carolina), my analysis reveals that these states have disaffected Democrats in redistricting more sharply than has the country as a whole. Using the Brookes Method to evaluate the small number of states using independent commissions to carry out Congressional redistricting, I find that electoral bias in these states is different from that found in states with legislative redistricting, and surprisingly, is often higher in commission states. This suggests that commissions are in some cases not truly independent and/or are merely fomenting a different kind of partisanship. I propose a new formulation (the Hill Ratio) of a familiar compactness standard, the area-perimeter measure. Thousands of House districts across time are analyzed under the measure and trends in compactness are noted. My analysis finds that districts in the U.S. have gotten considerably less compact since the early 20th century, while districts in Canada are still more compact than U.S. districts were even in the 1920s. Some of the states noted for their noncompact districts in the 2000s also had the least compact districts in the early 20th century. Finally, compactness is used as a factor in voter knowledge. My analysis finds that voters in non-compact districts are less likely to possess basic knowledge about their representatives and districts than voters in compact districts, while knowledge about statewide and national officeholders and party control is largely unaffected by the compactness of the congressional district. This is true when analyzed both at the aggregate and the individual level. These two measures of districting are harmonious with proportional representation ideals. The Brookes Method is an explicit comparison of majoritarian seat outputs with a proportional ideal. Compactness, in the words of Polsby & Popper, "tends to inhibit gerrymandering. By inhibiting gerrymandering, in turn, one abets proportional representation ... by empirical tendency."

Texte intégralThe Canadian basin is among the few basins worldwide for which the nature and the geometry of the substratum, and therefore the opening mode, are still unknown. Paleogeographic models based on the few data available are subject to controversy, with different mechanisms and inception ages. According to current paleogeographic models, the margins of Canadian basin either considered as extensional or transform margins. Detailed study of their structures and chronologies is a preliminary exercise to discriminate between permissible models. The most sollicited opening model assumes a change of polarity of the overall subduction south to the canadian basin during the multiphase Brookian orogeny. The Brooks orogen is located north of the alaskan peninsula and south of the canadian basin. It constitutes one of the main assembly stage of terranes in the Northern Cordillera : docking of the Arctic-Alaska-Chukotka terrane with the peri-Pacific arcs system. Its collisional stage is deemed synchronous of the opening of the Canada Basin, which is likely to provide clues about the coupling between tectonics of the north basin and intra-Alaska Cordillera deformation. This orogen has both recorded and influenced the geodynamic history of the Canadian basin. The relative chronology of the development of the two structures is essential and any reconstruction of regional geodynamics must reconcile them in terms of kinematics and boundary conditions

Laterally extensive, well-developed clinoforms have been mapped in Early Cretaceous deposits located in the northeastern 27,000 km2 of the Colville Basin, North Slope of Alaska. Using public domain 2-D seismic data, well logs, core photographs, and grain size data, depositional geometries within the Nanushuk and Torok formations were interpreted in order to constrain the transport conditions associated with progradation of the shoreline and construction of the continental margin out of detritus shed from the ancestral Brooks Range. Using STRATA, a synthetic stratigraphic modeling package, constructional clinoform geometries similar to those preserved in the North Slope clinoform volume (32,400 km3) were simulated. Sediment flux, marine and nonmarine diffusivities, and basin subsidence were systematically varied until a match was found for the foreset and topset slopes, as well as progradation rates over a 6 million year period. The ability of STRATA to match the seismically interpreted geometries allows us to constrain measures of possible water and sediment discharges consistent with the observed development of the Early Cretaceous clinoform suite. Simulations indicate that, in order to reproduce observed geometries and trends using constant input parameters, the subsidence rate must be very small, only a fraction of the most likely rate calculated from the seismic data. Constant sediment transport parameters can successfully describe the evolution of the prograding margin only in the absence of tectonic subsidence. However, further work is needed to constrain the absolute magnitude of these values and determine a unique solution for the NPR-A clinoforms.

The core object of this work is the black lesbian woman: a political subject under construction in Brazil. This study aims to give visibility to the processes of intersectional discrimination and oppression daily experienced by the black lesbian woman. The research wants to contribute with the construction and affirmation of this identity, as well as to provide elements for Social Work professional interventions and for the education of new Social Workers, in the face of contemporary expressions of social inequalities. Four women contributed to the construction of this work, and the main criteria for their selection were their self-determination as black and lesbians. Furthermore, the researcher looked for recognized political activists of the black lesbians movement, between the ages of 35 and 65, in order to enable the expression of generational differences. The field work, qualitative in nature, was based on semi-structured interviews, dealing with the following aspects: a) Personal and political history; b) Questions related to race, gender and sexuality; c) Prejudice and discrimination, and d) Public policies and Social Work. Each one of those aspects was discussed in terms of identity, race and prejudice, all of them related to Social Work. The fieldwork revealed that in some situations of racism are far more perverse and relevant than discrimination and prejudice based on lesbian phobia.

Texte intégralPaleoclimate reconstructions are essential to contextualize recent warming that is affecting the Arctic region faster than anywhere else on Earth. To better understand this rapidly changing landscape, I used sedimentological evidence from Lake Peters and Lake Schrader in the northeastern Brooks Range to infer changing environmental conditions over the past 16,000 years (16 ka). Across five core sites, distinct changes in the visual stratigraphy and physical sediment properties including sediment bulk density, organic-matter content, and grain-size distributions record changing environmental conditions. The oldest sediments accumulated rapidly and contain little organic matter, interpreted to represent a landscape dominated by glacial and paraglacial processes associated with the rapid upvalley retreat of glaciers. No robust evidence was found for a climate fluctuation concurrent with the Younger Dryas. A peak in organic-matter abundance between 12–10 ka is attributed to a maximum in Northern Hemisphere summer insolation and accords with other regional paleoclimate reconstructions. Following this, conditions appear to have become drier as indicated by sediments with high density and low organic content until 5 ka. Alternatively, these sediments could represent a glacial advance, but this is unlikely as regional evidence for cooler conditions is absent. From 5–2 ka, organic matter consistently increases in several cores and is attributed to increased river discharge, which carried terrestrial organic matter into the lakes, or to increased summer temperatures, which led to higher productivity, or both. After 2 ka, sediments increase in density and decrease in organic content, which suggests the growth of glaciers within the catchment. Moraine mapping and lichenometry confirm previous studies and accord with changes in lake sediments. Rhizocarpon geographicum thallus diameters on boulders located on the outermost moraine crest suggest the maximum Holocene glacial extent is associated with increased moraine frequency from elsewhere in the Brooks Range dating to 2.5–1.9 ka. New measurements from a distinct moraine crest from an additional valley show consistency within the basin and are likely associated with a regional increase in moraine frequency from 1.1–1.0 ka. Increased sedimentation rates and organic productivity in both lakes may record glacier retreat during the last century. This study provides a framework for future research and fills an important gap in paleoenvironmental records for the northeastern Brooks Range.

Texte intégralThe kinematics and geodynamics associated with the compressional deformation in the Brooks Range and British-Barn Mountains, respectively in Alaska (USA) and North Yukon (Canada), in a back-arc setting has long been debated. In particular, the tectonic history of the Arctic Alaska continental block located in the foreland of the Brooks Range has been diversely interpreted in the plate reconstructions proposed for the Canadian basin. The Brooks Range mountain chain develops from the Lower Cretaceous to the Cenozoic. Constraining its exhumational history and its link with shortening evolution is essential in this arctic area where plate tectonics, associated to the Canadian basin opening in the North, has led to controversial geodynamic models. Tectonic coupling with the active Pacific subduction in the south as well as major seismogenic strike-slip faulting make this orogen a key area where to refine the regional plate reconstructions and understanding of orogenic processes. The Cenozoic evolution of the Brooks Mountains is poorly understood although it is a nearly unique example of arctic orogen, which have potentially recorded major climate changes like Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum, the Oligocene cooling and Quaternary glaciations. This orogen is a key to study and quantify the climate impact on the north-alaskan topographic growth. This study combined low-temperature thermochronometry (FT, U-Th/He) on granitic and sedimentary rocks, which were thermo-kinematically modeled using Pecube in order to define the orogenic evolution of this arctic region since 100 Ma. In parallel, a field-based structural study (North Yukon and Brooks Range) was combined with the analysis of subsurface data. Thermochronological data, coupled to thermometric RSCM analyses and thermal modeling first define a slow exhumation period (0.2 km/Ma) from Upper Cretaceous up to the Eocene. With the Eocene, exhumation rates drastically increased to reach 1.25-1.29km/Ma as the deformation also migrates from SW toward NE. In both alaskan and canadian parts of mountains ranges a clear Oligocene exhumational event is identified. This event is linked to out-of-sequence crustal duplexing in the internal part of the range in the Brooks Range, contemporaneous with the propagation of deformation offshore, along British and Barn Mountains

Texte intégralThe use of solar energy via photoelectrochemical water splitting is an attractive approach for clean hydrogen production. Because of its physico-chemical properties, Earth abundance and non-toxicity, TiO2 is one of the most studied photoanode material. Yet the focus is only put on the anatase and rutile structures. However, photoelectrochemical properties of TiO2 brookite remain quite unknown and need to be assessed. Here we present an easy, scalable synthesis approach for photoanodes allowing a good control of crystallinity, shape and particles size and their organization in the photoanode. The three different pure phases of TiO2 nanoparticles were synthetized, assembled into a photoanode with a dip-coating technique and appropriately sintered to obtain good film cohesion. The brookite phase is first studied: parameters such as thickness and porosity of the electrode, crystallinity and size of the crystallites are carefully investigated to understand their influence on the photoanode performances. Interestingly, its poor photocurrent cannot be attributed to electron-hole recombination at grains interfaces rather than charge carrier separation and transfer properties in the bulk of the particles. Furthermore, the influence of the TiO2 phase is evaluated. Because of small particles size and isotropic morphology, poor electron and hole transfer were found too deleterious to establish an indicative performance hierarchy between anatase, brookite and rutile pure phases. Eventually, phase mixture of anatase – rutile was investigated and showed a significant performance increase attributed to the improvement of charge carrier separation and mobility
