Résumé :
The type IIA nonsupersymmetric meta-stable brane configuration consisting of three NS5-branes, D4-branes and anti-D4-branes where the electric gauge theory superpotential has a quartic term for the bifundamentals besides a mass term is constructed. By adding the orientifold 4-plane and 6-plane to this brane configuration, we also describe the intersecting brane configurations of type IIA string theory corresponding to the meta-stable nonsupersymmetric vacua of corresponding gauge theories.

We study Myers' world volume effective action of coincident D-branes. We investigate a system of N0D0-branes in the geometry of Dp-branes with p = 2 or p = 4. The choice of coordinates can make the action simplified and tractable. For p = 4, we show that a certain pointlike D0-brane configuration solving equations of motion of the action can expand to form a fuzzy two-sphere via magnetic moment effect without changing quantum numbers. We compare noncommutative D0-brane configurations with dual spherical D(6 - p)-brane systems. We also discuss the relation between these configurations and giant gravitons in 11 dimensions.

We construct the type IIA nonsupersymmetric meta-stable brane configuration consisting of (2k+1) NS5-branes and D4-branes where the electric gauge theory superpotential has an order (2k+2) polynomial for the bifundamentals. We find a rich pattern of nonsupersymmetric meta-stable states as well as the supersymmetric stable ones. Résumé :
We consider a toy model with flat thin branes embedded in a five-dimensional Weyl integrable manifold, where the geometric Weyl scalar provides the material that constitute the brane configurations. The brane configuration is similar to the Randall–Sundrum model. However, it is found that the massless graviton is localized on the brane with negative tension. So, in order to solve the gauge hierarchy problem, our world should be confined on the positive tension brane, and this is crucial to reproduce a correct Friedmann-like equation on the brane. The spacings of graviton mass spectrum are very tiny, but these massive gravitons are hidden in low energy experiments because they are weakly coupled with matter on the brane.

Starting from an [Formula: see text] supersymmetric electric gauge theory with the multiple product gauge group and the bifundamentals, we apply Seiberg dual to each gauge group, obtain the [Formula: see text] supersymmetric dual magnetic gauge theories with dual matters including the gauge singlets. Then we describe the intersecting brane configurations, where there are NS-branes and D4-branes (and anti-D4-branes), of type IIA string theory corresponding to the meta-stable nonsupersymmetric vacua of this gauge theory. We also discuss the case where the orientifold 4-planes are added into the above brane configuration. Next, by adding an orientifold 6-plane, we apply to an [Formula: see text] supersymmetric electric gauge theory with the multiple product gauge group (where a single symplectic or orthogonal gauge group is present) and the bifundamentals. Finally, we describe the other cases where the orientifold 6-plane intersects with NS-brane.

For the D-branes on the SL (2,R) WZW model we present a particular choice of outer automorphism for the gluing condition of currents that leads to a special AdS2 brane configuration. This configuration is shown to be a static solution in the cylindrical coordinates, and a nonstatic solution in the Poincaré coordinates to the nonlinear equation of motion for the Dirac–Born–Infeld action of a D-string. The generalization of it gives a family of nonstatic AdS2 brane solutions. They are demonstrated to transform to each other under the isometry group of AdS3 space–time.

We propose a full-fledged open string framework that seems suited to study the black hole information paradox. We set up a configuration to compute the scattering amplitude of a IIB open string around a D5-brane. The D5-brane is situated at the origin of a transverse D3-brane. A string perturbation theory is employed where the geometry of the D5-brane is treated as a potential. We reason that the setup is capable of reconciling the unitary evolution of states and information loss that is measured by an observer on the D3 brane. With the configurations of these kinds, the information loss is an apparent phenomenon: it is just a manifestation of the fact that the D3-observer does not have access to the "hair" of the D5 black brane.

Résumé :
In this paper, we will use a BIonic solution for analyzing the holographic cosmology. A BIonic solution is a configuration of a D3-brane and an anti-D3-brane connected by a wormhole, and holographic cosmology is a recent proposal to explain cosmic expansion by using the holographic principle. In our model, a BIonic configuration will be produced by the transition of fundamental black strings. The formation of a BIonic configuration will cause inflation. As the D3-brane moves away from the anti-D3-brane, the wormhole will get annihilated, and the inflation will end with the annihilation of this wormhole. However, it is possible for a D3-brane to collide with an anti-D3-brane. Such a collision will occur if the distance between the D3-brane and the anti-D3-brane reduces, and this will create tachyonic states. We will demonstrate that these tachyonic states will lead to the formation of a new wormhole, and this will cause acceleration of the universe before such a collision.

We consider a configuration of strings and solitons in the type IIB superstring theory on M5×T5, which is composed of a set of arbitrarily-wound D-five branes on T5 and a set of arbitrarily-wound D-strings on S1 of the torus. For the configuration, it is shown that number of microscopic states is bounded from above by the exponential of the Hawking-Bekenstein entropy of the corresponding black hole and the temperature of closed string radiation from the D-branes is bounded from below by the Hawking temperature of the black hole. After discussing the necessary and sufficient condition to saturate these bounds, we give some speculations about black hole thermodynamics.

Résumé :
We use the model of L. Randall et al.3 to investigate the stability of allowed quantum field configurations. Firstly, we find that due to the topology of this five-dimensional model, there are two possible configurations of the scalar field, untwisted and twisted. They give rise to two types of instability. Secondly, when allowed to interact in the brane, the untwisted field is shown to be unstable even if it is at the true vacuum ground state as a result of one-loop corrections that arise from coupling with the twisted field. On the other hand, the twisted field can make the two three-branes (that are otherwise identical in their properties and geometry) distinguishable therefore causing an energy difference between them. That is due to the antiperiodicity of the twisted fields, when rotating with π to go from one three-brane to the other. This energy difference between the branes renders the fifth dimension unstable. This toy model is simple enough to use to illustrate a point that can be important for the general case of any high dimension model, namely: higher dimensions, besides many other effects can also induce more than one field configuration and that can have consequences (e.g. instabilities) even after reducing the problem to four dimensions.

We describe a dynamical worldsheet origin for the Lagrangian describing the low-energy dynamics of a system of parallel D-branes. We show how matrix-valued collective coordinate fields for the D-branes naturally arise as couplings of a worldsheet σ-model, and that the quantum dynamics require that these couplings be mutually noncommutative. We show that the low-energy effective action for the σ-model couplings describes the propagation of an open string in the background of the multiple D-brane configuration, in which all string interactions between the constituent branes are integrated out and the genus expansion is taken into account, with a matrix-valued coupling. The effective field theory is governed by the non-Abelian Born–Infeld target space action which leads to the standard one for D-brane field theory.

Résumé :
In string theory, a scalar field often appears as a moduli of a geometrical configuration of D-branes in higher-dimensional space. In the low energy effective theory on D-branes, the distance between D-branes is translated into the energy scale of the gauge symmetry breaking. In this paper, we study a phenomenological consequence of a possibility that the Higgs field is such a moduli field and the D-brane configuration is stabilized by a stationary motion, in particular, revolution of D-branes on which we live. Then, due to the Coriolis force, Higgs mode is mixed with the angular fluctuation of branes and the Lorentz symmetry is violated in the dispersion relation of the Higgs boson. The Higgs boson mass measurements at LHC experiments give an upper bound [Formula: see text][Formula: see text][Formula: see text] GeV for the angular frequency of the revolution of D-branes.

Résumé :
A new model which allows a non-minimal coupling between gravity and quintessence in the configuration of teleparallel gravity was recently proposed by Geng et al. [“Teleparallel” dark energy, Phys. Lett. B 704 (2011) 384–387] and they named it teleparallel dark energy. Now the main problem which arises is to know what is the source of this dark energy? The answer of this question is given by us in [Formula: see text]-theory. This type of dark energy may be produced at three stages in our model. First, one six-dimensional universe is formed by combining and expanding [Formula: see text]-branes. We know that this universe-brane is polarized on two circles and our four-dimensional cosmos and two [Formula: see text]-branes are yielded. At third stage, two [Formula: see text]-branes glued to each other and one [Formula: see text]-brane is formed. This [Formula: see text] connects our universe with another universe, gives its energy to them and causes the production of dark energy. Thus, the [Formula: see text]-brane is unstable and dissolves in our four-dimensional universes and supplies the needed teleparallel dark energy for expansion. These calculations are extended to [Formula: see text]-theory and shown that the amount of teleparallel dark energy which is produced by compactification of universe-branes in [Formula: see text]-theory is more than string theory.

We calculate the partition function of M-strings by using the refined topological vertex formalism. We find that the supersymmetry of M-strings gets enhanced to [Formula: see text] by tuning some Kähler parameters. Furthermore, we discuss another possibility of the enhancement of supersymmetry which is different from the above one.

String instanton Yukawa corrections from Euclidean D-branes are investigated in an effective Standard Model theory obtained from the minimal U (3)× U (2)× U (1) D-brane configuration. In the case of the minimal chiral and Higgs spectrum, it is found that superpotential contributions are induced by string instantons for the perturbatively forbidden entries of the up- and down-quark mass matrices. Analogous nonperturbative effects generate heavy Majorana neutrino masses and a Dirac neutrino texture with factorizable Yukawa couplings. For this latter case, a specific example is worked out where it is shown how this texture can reconcile the neutrino data.

Résumé :
Recent analysis suggests that the classical dynamics of a tachyon on an unstable D-brane is described by a scalar Born–Infeld type action with a runaway potential. The classical configurations in this theory at late time are in one to one correspondence with the configuration of a system of noninteracting (incoherent), nonrotating dust. We discuss some aspects of canonical quantization of this field theory coupled to gravity, and explore, following an earlier work on this subject, the possibility of using the scalar field (tachyon) as the definition of time in quantum cosmology. At late "time" we can identify a subsector in which the scalar field decouples from gravity and we recover the usual Wheeler–de Witt equation of quantum gravity.

Résumé :
We discuss the one-loop effective potential and static (large d) potential for toroidal D-brane described by DBI-action in constant magnetic and in constant electric fields. Explicit calculation is done for membrane case (p=2) for both types of external fields and in case of static potential for an arbitrary p. In the case of one-loop potential it is found that the presence of magnetic background may stabilize D-brane giving the possibility for non-pointlike ground state configuration. On the same time, constant electrical field acts against stabilization and the correspondent one-loop potential is unbounded from below. The properties of static potential which also has stable minimum are described in detail. The back-reaction of quantum gauge fields to one-loop potential is also evaluated.

Résumé :
We study the localization properties of fundamental fields which are coupled to one another through the gauge mechanism both in the original Randall–Sundrum (RS) and in the modified Randall–Sundrum (MRS) braneworld models: scalar–vector, vector–vector, and spinor–vector configuration systems. For this purpose, we derive conditions of localization, namely, the finiteness of integrals over the extra coordinate in the action of the system considered. We also derive field equations for each of the systems and then obtain their solutions corresponding to the extra dimension by a separation of variable method for every field involved in each system. We then insert the obtained solutions into the conditions of localization to seek whether or not the solutions are in accordance with the conditions of localization. We obtain that not all of the configuration systems considered are localizable on the brane of the original RS model while, on the contrary, they are localizable on the MRS braneworld model with some restrictions. In terms of field localizability on the brane, this result shows that the MRS model is much better than the original RS model.

Résumé :
We have obtained a rotating black hole solution in the braneworld scenario by applying the Newman-Janis algorithm. The new solution carries two types of charge, one arising from the bulk Weyl tensor and one from the gauge field trapped on the brane. In order to obtain this result, we used a modified version of the algorithm in which the involved complexification is the key point. The analysis of the horizon structure of the new metric shows similarities to the Kerr-Newman solution. In particular, there is a minimal mass to which the black hole can decay through the Hawking radiation. From the thermodynamical analysis, the possibility of a degenerate horizon gives a temperature that, instead of a divergent behaviour at short scales, admits both a minimum and a maximum before cooling down towards a zero temperature remnant configuration.

Résumé :
To realize massive pions, we study variations of the holographic model of massless QCD using the [Formula: see text] brane configuration proposed by Sakai and Sugimoto. We propose deformations which break the chiral symmetry explicitly and compute the mass of the pions and vector mesons. The observed value of the pion mass can be obtained. We also argue a chiral perturbation corresponding to our deformation.

We discuss some recent results on a holographic description of QCD on the basis of a [Formula: see text]- brane configuration in type IIA superstring theory. A special attention is paid to studies of the baryon dynamics in that model. Using the fact that baryons in large Nc QCD should be regarded as a soliton, it is seen that this model reproduces the experimental data quite nicely.

Résumé :
We propose a field theory for describing the tachyon on a brane–antibrane system near the minimum of the potential. This field theory realizes two known properties of the tachyon effective action: (a) absence of plane-wave solutions around the minimum, and (b) exponential fall off of the pressure at late time as the tachyon field evolves from any spatially homogeneous initial configuration towards the minimum of the potential. Classical solutions in this field theory include nonrelativistic matter with arbitrary spatial distribution of energy.

Résumé :
Twistor-like formulations for super p-brane theories in the D-dimensional space-time including D=11 supermembrane are suggested in an extended configuration space. This extension is carried out by the addition of auxiliary spinor coordinates of the moving repere (the Newman-Penrose dyades for D=4). The spinor coordinates are realized as the Lorentz harmonics and necessary for the irreducible covariant description of the κ-symmetry. Using this harmonical realization a generalization of the Newman-Penrose dyades for the case D=11 is suggested.

Résumé :
For the noncommutative torus [Formula: see text], in the case of the noncommutative parameter [Formula: see text], we construct the basis of Hilbert space ℋn in terms of θ functions of the positions zi of n solitons. The wrapping around the torus generates the algebra [Formula: see text], which is the Zn × Zn Heisenberg group on θ functions. We find the generators g of a local elliptic su (n), which transform covariantly by the global gauge transformation of [Formula: see text]. By acting on ℋn we establish the isomorphism of [Formula: see text] and g. We embed this g into the L-matrix of the elliptic Gaudin and Calogero–Moser models to give the dynamics. The moment map of this twisted cotangent [Formula: see text] bundle is matched to the D-equation with the Fayet–Illiopoulos source term, so the dynamics of the noncommutative solitons become that of the brane. The geometric configuration (k, u) of the spectral curve det |L(u) - k| = 0 describes the brane configuration, with the dynamical variables zi of the noncommutative solitons as the moduli T⊗ n/Sn. Furthermore, in the noncommutative Chern–Simons theory for the quantum Hall effect, the constrain equation with quasiparticle source is identified also with the moment map equation of the noncommutative [Formula: see text] cotangent bundle with marked points. The eigenfunction of the Gaudin differential L-operators as the Laughlin wave function is solved by Bethe ansatz.

Résumé :
Gravity duals for a class of UV complete minimally supersymmetric nonconformal gauge theories require deformed conifolds with fluxes. However these manifolds do not allow for the standard Kähler or conformally Kähler metrics on them, instead the metrics are fully non-Kähler. We take a generic such configuration of a non-Kähler deformed conifold with fluxes and ask what constraints do supersymmetry impose in the baryonic branch. We study the supersymmetry conditions and show that for the correct choices of the vielbeins and the complex structure all the equations may be consistently solved. The constraints now lead not only to the known cases in the literature but also to some new backgrounds. We also show how geometric features of these backgrounds, including the overall warp-factor and the resolution parameters, can be seen on the field theory side from perturbative “probe-brane” type calculations by Higgsing the theory and studying one-loop 4-point functions of vector and chiral multiplets. Finally we discuss how UV completions of these gauge theories may be seen from our setup, both from type IIB as well as from the T-dual type IIA brane constructions.
