Résumé :
It was investigated the association between leptin gene single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) T2411C and T3266G with carcass traits in F2 pigs obtained by crossing native Brazilian Piau with commercial sows composed of Landrace, Large White and Pietrain breeds. Association analyses were performed using a statistical model that included genotype, sex, and batch as fixed effects, sire and error as random effects. The T2411C SNP was associated with skinless and fatless boston shoulder weight (BSW), backfat thickness at last rib, 6.5 cm from the midline (P2), skinless and fatless picnic shoulder weight, and sirloin weight (SLW). The T3266G mutation was associated with slaughter age, bacon weight, BSW, midline backfat thickness between last and last but one lumbar vertebra, midline backfat thickness at last rib, P2 and rib weight. Phenotypic associations were also performed by combining genotypes for both SNPs. Associations with P2, carcass yield, total boston shoulder weight, and SLW were observed. The results obtained demonstrate that the SNPs analyzed have potential to be explored as markers for carcass composition in pigs.

Résumé :
Weakening of the endosperm tissue around the radicle tip before radicle protrusion and a potential role of endo-β-mannanase during germination of lettuce seeds (Lactuca sativa L.) at high temperature (35 °C) were investigated. Seeds from the thermotolerant genotypes `Everglades' and PI 251245 had greater endo-β-mannanase activity before radicle protrusion at 35 °C than the thermosensitive genotypes `Dark Green Boston', `Valmaine' and `Floricos 83'. Thermotolerant genotypes also generated more ethylene at high temperature. At 35 °C, germination of `Dark Green Boston' and `Everglades' seeds produced at days/nights of 20/10 °C was 10% and 32%, respectively, whereas germination of seeds produced at days/nights of 30/20 °C was 67% and 83%, respectively. Higher endo-β-mannanase activity was observed before radicle protrusion in `Dark Green Boston' seeds produced at 30/20 °C compared with those produced at 20/10 °C. A relationship between seed germination at high temperature, ethylene production, and an increase in endo-β-mannanase activity before radicle protrusion was confirmed.

Résumé :
Rationale The Boston criteria are used worldwide for the in vivo diagnosis of cerebral amyloid angiopathy and are the basis for clinical decision-making and research in the field. Given substantial advances in cerebral amyloid angiopathy's clinical aspects and MRI biomarkers, we designed a multicenter study within the International cerebral amyloid angiopathy Association aimed at further validating the diagnostic accuracy of the Boston and potentially improving and updating them. Aim We aim to derive and validate an updated “version 2.0” of the Boston criteria across the spectrum of cerebral amyloid angiopathy-related presentations and MRI biomarkers. Sample size estimates Participating centers with suitable available data (see Methods) were identified from existing collaborations and an open invitation to the International Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy Association emailing list. Our study sample will include: (1) a derivation cohort – Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Boston cases from inception to 2012 (∼150 patients); (2) temporal external validation cohort – MGH, Boston cases from 2012 to 2018 (∼100 patients); and (3) geographical external validation cohort – non-Boston cases (∼85 patients). Methods and design Multicenter collaborative study. We will collect and analyze data from patients' age ≥ 50 with any potential sporadic cerebral amyloid angiopathy-related clinical presentations (spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage, transient focal neurological episodes and cognitive impairment), available brain MRI (“index test”), and histopathologic assessment for cerebral amyloid angiopathy (“reference standard” for diagnosis). Trained raters will assess MRI for all prespecified hemorrhagic and non-hemorrhagic small vessel disease markers of interest, according to validated criteria and a prespecified protocol, masked to clinical and histopathologic features. Brain tissue samples will be rated for cerebral amyloid angiopathy, defined as Vonsattel grade ≥2 for whole brain autopsies and ≥1 for cortical biopsies or hematoma evacuation. Based on our estimated available sample size, we will undertake pre-specified cohort splitting as above. We will: (a) pre-specify variables and statistical cut-offs; (b) examine univariable and multivariable associations; and (c) then assess classification measures (sensitivity, specificity etc.) for each MRI biomarker individually, in relation to the cerebral amyloid angiopathy diagnosis reference standard on neuropathology in a derivation cohort. The MRI biomarkers strongly associated with cerebral amyloid angiopathy diagnosis will be selected for inclusion in provisional (probable and possible cerebral amyloid angiopathy) Boston criteria v2.0 and validated using appropriate metrics and models. Study outcomes Boston criteria v2.0 for clinical cerebral amyloid angiopathy diagnosis. Discussion This work aims to potentially update and improve the diagnostic test accuracy of the Boston criteria for cerebral amyloid angiopathy and to provide wider validation of the criteria in a large sample. We envision that this work will meet the needs of clinicians and investigators and help accelerate progress towards better treatment of cerebral amyloid angiopathy.

Résumé :
Objective Understanding the pattern of population risk for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is critically important for health systems and policy makers. The objective of this study was to describe the association between neighborhood factors and number of COVID-19 cases. We hypothesized an association between disadvantaged neighborhoods and clusters of COVID-19 cases. Methods We analyzed data on patients presenting to a large health care system in Boston during February 5–May 4, 2020. We used a bivariate local join-count procedure to determine colocation between census tracts with high rates of neighborhood demographic characteristics (eg, Hispanic race/ethnicity) and measures of disadvantage (eg, health insurance status) and COVID-19 cases. We used negative binomial models to assess independent associations between neighborhood factors and the incidence of COVID-19. Results A total of 9898 COVID-19 patients were in the cohort. The overall crude incidence in the study area was 32 cases per 10 000 population, and the adjusted incidence per census tract ranged from 2 to 405 per 10 000 population. We found significant colocation of several neighborhood factors and the top quintile of cases: percentage of population that was Hispanic, non-Hispanic Black, without health insurance, receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, and living in poverty. Factors associated with increased incidence of COVID-19 included percentage of population that is Hispanic (incidence rate ratio [IRR] = 1.25; 95% CI, 1.23-1.28) and percentage of households living in poverty (IRR = 1.25; 95% CI, 1.19-1.32). Conclusions We found a significant association between neighborhoods with high rates of disadvantage and COVID-19. Policy makers need to consider these health inequities when responding to the pandemic and planning for subsequent health needs.

Résumé :
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been associated with regulation of body weight and appetite. The goal of this study was to examine the interactions of a functional variant (rs6265) in theBDNFgene with dietary intake for obesity traits in the Boston Puerto Rican Health Study.BDNFrs6265 was genotyped in 1147 Puerto Rican adults and examined for association with obesity-related traits. Men (n=242) with the GG genotype had higher BMI (P=0.009), waist circumference (P=0.002), hip (P=0.002), and weight (P=0.03) than GA or AA carriers (n=94). They had twice the risk of being overweight (BMI≥25) relative to GA or AA carriers (OR = 2.08, CI = 1.02–4.23, andP=0.043). Interactions between rs6265 and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) intake were associated with BMI, hip, and weight, and n-3 : n-6 PUFA ratio with waist circumference in men. In contrast, women (n=595) with the GG genotype had significantly lower BMI (P=0.009), hip (P=0.029), and weight (P=0.027) than GA or AA carriers (n=216). Women with the GG genotype were 50% less likely to be overweight compared to GA or AA carriers (OR = 0.05, CI = 0.27–0.91, andP=0.024). In summary,BDNFrs6265 is differentially associated with obesity risk by sex and interacts with PUFA intake influencing obesity traits in Boston Puerto Rican men.

Résumé :
Abstract Objectives Studies have reported an association between acid lowering agents (ALAs) such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and histamine-2 receptor antagonists (H2RAs) and malabsorption of vitamin B-12 (B-12). Therefore, we sought to examine the association between ALA use, including PPI and H2RA, and B-12 deficiency in a cohort of older Puerto Rican adults residing in the Boston MA metropolitan area. Methods This analysis was conducted within the Boston Puerto Rican Health Study (BPRHS), an ongoing longitudinal cohort that enrolled 1502 self-identified Puerto Rican adults aged 45–75 y at baseline. Our study was comprised of 1428 participants at baseline, with complete baseline data on plasma B-12 concentration, of whom 1155 and 647 participated in wave-2 (mean 2.2 y from baseline ± 0.61 y), and wave-3 (mean 6.2 y ± 0.98 y), collections, respectively. B-12 deficiency was defined as plasma cobalamin <148 pmol/L or methyl malonic acid (MMA) >271 nmol/L. Covariate-adjusted logistic regression was used to examine the association between overall ALA, PPI and H2RA use and B-12 deficiency at baseline and wave-3 (mean 6.2 y) as well as between long-term use (mean 6.2 y) and B-12 deficiency at 6.2 y of follow-up. Logistic mixed effects models were used to examine associations between baseline ALA, PPI and H2RA use and trajectory of B-12 deficiency over 6.2 y of follow-up. Analyses were further stratified for B-12 supplement use, based on food frequency questionnaire. Results Of 1428 participants at baseline, 455 were ALA users, of which 361 were PPI, 112 H2RA and 18 concomitant users. In baseline cross-sectional analyses, including analyses stratified for B-12 supplement use, we did not observe an association between ALA, PPI, H2RA use and B-12 deficiency. We also did not observe an association between long-term ALA, PPI, H2RA use and B-12 deficiency at 6.2 y. Further, in trajectory analyses, we did not observe an association between baseline ALA, PPI, H2RA use and trajectory of B-12 deficiency from baseline through 6.2 y follow-up, including in analyses stratified for B-12 supplement use. Conclusions In this study we did not observe an association between ALA, PPI, H2RA use and B-12 deficiency over wave-3 (6.2 y) follow-up. Larger studies with more detailed exposure information are needed to further examine these associations. Funding Sources NIH.

Watkin, Thomas.

Taking the case of community development corporations (CDCs) in the city of Boston in the United States, this dissertation questions the construction of a structured professional territory in the social and physical space of the community. These CDCs operating in poor neighborhoods embody the evolution of the community development field and the professionalization of committed organizations in the field of housing and in multiple economy and social activities. In this context, this thesis aims to identify the community space as a network of actors and a set of spatial practices. After explaining its institutionalization by the state and a group of actors, this dissertation proposes to study the organizational structure of the CDCs as the result of a combination of real estate activities and a social movement. Examined from its emergence during the sixties to the economy and financial crisis of 2007-2011, this analysis is based on the methods of social network analysis and an ethnographic exploration of professional identifies shaped by the commitment and movement of individuals in the space of the community. Situations of collective affirmation of the existence of CDCs illustrate this territorial extension of the practices and the tensions it has on the players who take part of it. Finally, the identification of this professional territory is viewed through the experience of the economic crisis and housing mortgages generating relationships between actors and in which the community becomes both a space for change and adaptation to face an unstable situation

In this thesis an investigation of the ratio of the production cross section of W and Z bosons in association with one jet at LHC is performed. The cross-section ratio is measured with LHC proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, collected by the ATLAS experiment in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 40 pb-1. The analysis is performed selecting W and Z bosons decaying in the muon channel. It is the first time the ratio of W and Z bosons production associated with one jet is measured at such a high center-of-mass energy, the measurement is the first one at the LHC. This measurement constitutes a very important test of perturbative theoretical calculations based on the advantage of the partial and full cancellations of various uncertainties. It also serves as constraining backgrounds with similar topological signatures in the search for new physics phenomena at the LHC. The measured ratio value is presented as a function of cumulative jet transverse momentum thresholds and found, within statistical precision, to agree well with perturbative LO and NLO QCD predictions

The scientific work presented in this thesis is based on proton proton collision produced, at 13 TeV in the center of mass, created by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and recorded between 2015 and 2017 by the ATLAS detector. After a short introduction on the physics program at LHC, the first chapter gives a comprehensive overview of the theoretical context and motivation. Then a complete description of the ATLAS detector and more generally the experimental setup is given with a highlight on the different physics objects used in this research. The third chapter is dealing with a measure of the performances of the ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter, namely the study of the electron identification efficiencies using W decaying into electrons and neutrinos events. In the following chapters, the core of this thesis work, the search and study of the associated Higgs boson production with top quark pair, so-called ttH production, within the Standard Model schema and beyond is treated. The observation for ttH production with the ATLAS detector recently announced in 2018 represents a significant milestone for the High-Energy Physics field. In order to broaden the spectrum of this ttH analysis beyond the SM, this 4L channel final states was also studied in the context of the search for doubly charged Higgs boson decaying into W±W±, H±±→W±W±.In conclusions, future prospects in Standard Model (SM) as well as Beyond SM (BSM) scientific results that could be reached using the full Run1 and Run2 combined available statistics are given

Résumé :
This thesis presents measurements of the cross section for the production of a W boson in association with jets and the ratio of the cross sections for the production of a W boson and a Z boson in association with jets. Both measurements are performed in proton-proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb-1. The dataset allows for the exploration of a large kinematic range, including jet production up to a transverse momentum of 1 TeV and multiplicities up to seven jets. Results are presented as a function of jet transverse momenta and rapidities and as a function of event variables such as the scalar sum of the transverse momenta of the jets. Results as a function of dijet angular variables are also presented. The measurements are compared to several state-of-the-art QCD predictions including next-to-leading-order perturbative calculations, resummation calculations and Monte Carlo generators. Finally, the effect of the results on parton distribution functions is explored.

Résumé :
The associated Z vector boson production rate of the Standard Model Higgs boson has been measured in decays into two b quarks, with the Z boson decaying into an electron or muon pair in the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The associated Z vector boson production cross section in the Standard Model is almost two orders of magnitude smaller than the dominant Higgs boson production cross section from gluon fusion. Proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV delivered by the LHC with the ATLAS detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 13 fb−1 has been analysed. A Higgs boson produced via associated production with a Z vector boson is excluded with a 95% confidence level in a mass range between 110 to 130 GeV at 6 to 11 times the Standard Model cross section, respectively.
