Résumé :

This study examines the impact of terrorism on agribusiness in Borno state. Terrorist activities in Borno state dates back to 2009 where a group of Islamic extremists popularly known as Boko Haram (meaning western education is a sin) became violent in their activities. The group operates significantly in north-eastern Nigeria where Borno state is located and since 2009. The presence of the group has led to collapse of socio-economic activities in Borno state among other states. Millions of people have been displaced fromtheir homes and forced to live in camps in neighbouring states. As a result, this study examines the impact of insurgency related activities on agribusiness in BornoState. Agricbusiness in Borno state can be measured using four different parameters, amount of area cultivated, annual crop production, rearing of livestock and fish farming. These are the major agricultural business residents of Borno state are engaged in. However due to unavailability of data, rearing of livestock and fish farming are dropped, thus focusing on area cultivated and annual crop production. As a result of these two variables, two models are developed. The first model measures the relationship between amounts of crop produced with insurgency related killings, while the second model measuresthe relationship between total areasof farmland cultivated with fatalities resulting from terrorist activity. This study employs Ordinary Least Squares methodology and finds that both relationshipsreveal negative results thus indicating statistically significant negative impact of terrorism on agribusiness in Borno State. The research work was conducted to find out on the adopting of managerial marketing strategies to revive the declining position of industries in the state, The study will help Borno state industries to identify the marketing style/ marketing strategies on day to day activities on managing it industries in the state the research also reveal that the marketing strategies and marketing logic that will be use to attract more prospective customers to patronize Borno state industries goods , Base on the finding, it was reveal that Borno state government need to invest a higher amount of money to boost the economic standard of state, create more job opportunity to the teeming youth of state, and also attract foreign direct investors for the survival of the industries of the state, all the industries need to adopt PS of marketing mix programme, marketing segmentation, packaging branding vertical marketing system and horizontal marketing system, price of product fixing policy, distribution channels, method of advertising channels product life cycles stages and the rest. Borno state industries to move out of these economic recession all the industries most adopts managerial marketing strategies for the revival of Borno industries.

Abstract The practice of gift-giving was omnipresent in trans-Saharan embassies. Gifts were the material expression of the political dialogue between rulers. Their quality and quantity was a good barometer of relations between rulers. A close analysis of the gifts sent or received by the Borno rulers (present-day Nigeria) between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries reveals a system of norms and customs on the part of the Borno chancellery. Their material value also raises the question of their economic dimension and how they were recycled. By focusing on the embassies between Tripoli and Borno in the early modern period, the aim of this article is to demonstrate that the gifts were a part of a normalized practice of diplomacy. Beyond the message carried by the gifts themselves, the Borno sultans mixed economic and political interests by integrating the exchanges of gifts into the wider trans-Saharan trade.

Résumé :

The study investigated effects of insurgency on educational development in Borno State. Basic education is the first level of education for children at primary 1 level to basic 9 which is the junior secondary school level in Nigeria. However, achieving education for all Nigerian children, Borno state need a secured teaching and learning environment. The study examined the effect of insurgent activities such as abduction of pupils and attacks on teachers in basic schools of Borno State and its effect to the development of the education in the state. The sample for the study was 270 teachers of basic schools, selected on the basis of 10 teachers from each of the 27 local government area that constitute Borno State. The instrument for data collection was a 20 items questionnaire title: Boko Haram Insurgency and educational development Questionnaires (HIEDQ). Two research questions were formulated, data collected were converted to mean, standard deviation and used to answer the research questions. It was therefore recommended that the Nigerian government should provide security to the state. The government should show higher commitment in mobilizing the armed forces to end the insurgency in the State and provide adequate security in schools. It was further recommended that the religious leaders should preach against violence act in their respective communities.

This study examines the lack of proper evaluation and performance in promoting staff of Borno state civil service commission , It is indeed clear that the effects of civil service commission in appraisal of the performance of employees in relation to promotion. Similarly, evaluation of staff promotion is a critical factor in economic and social development for it to determine the standard of the organisation. Being an employee, certain variables are expected by the individual from the organisation as rewards. It is a well-known fact that three has been a very serious decline and in some instance complete collapse of the public sector in Borno state over the years as a result of insurgency. In spite of huge financial commitments put in place by the government as payment of remuneration and other fringe benefits, the public sector in the state is either decline or in most cases embarrassingly inefficient and in effective, thought many factors contributed to this unfortunate issues of lack of proper evaluation of staff promotion in Borno state civil service commission.

Gerhard Rohlfs was born in Vegesack near Bremen in 1831. He was a frequent traveler in Africa, and in 1865-67 he became the first European to travel from north Africa across the Sahara to the west African coast, from Tripoli to Borno, then through Bauchi and Keffi to Loko, thence down the Benue to its confluence with the Niger at Lokoja, which he reached on 28 March 1867. From there, he proceeded upstream along the Niger to Raba, delivering presents to Masaba of Nupe. From Raba, he traveled overland through Yorubaland to Lagos. In 1868 he published an account of the first half of this journey, from north Africa to Borno, in Petermann's Mitteilungen. In 1872 his account of the second half, “Gerhard Rohlfs' Reise durch Nord-Afrika vom Mittelländischen Meere bis zum Busen von Guinea, 1865 bis 1867, 2. Hälfte: von Kuka nach Lagos (Bornu, Bautschi, Saria, Nupe, Yoruba),” also appeared in Petermann's. A later publication, Quer durch Afrika, which appeared in 1874-75, covered the entire journey.Rohlfs' accounts of his travels in west Africa south of the Sahara have up to now been greatly neglected. The works mentioned above have never been published in English translation, which no doubt goes some way to explain this neglect. Rohlfs' information on his stay in Kuka (the capital of Borno) and his visits to Bauchi and Nupe have been cited by some scholars, at least. Very few, however, appear to have consulted his description of the last leg of his 1866-67 journey, in which he proceeded from the Niger south through Yorubaland to Lagos, visiting Share, Ilorin, Iwo, Ibadan, and parts of Ijebuland on the way.

Background: Endourology which includes lower urinary tract (LUT) endoscopy, is an important component of standard urological practice worldwide. The objective of our study was to audit the LUT endoscopic procedures performed in Borno, a state in north-eastern Nigeria and share our experience.Methods: We, retrospectively reviewed the Lower urinary Tract endoscopies performed in Borno state over 9 years, from January 2012 to December 2020. Data related to LUT endoscopies were extracted from the patients’ clinical notes and operation theatre registers of the 2 focused hospitals in Borno where endourology procedures were performed (University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and Royal specialist hospital maiduguri) and then analyzed. Urology patients who did not undergone LUT endoscopy were excluded.Results: We analyzed the data of total sum of 201 patients for the 2 hospitals, which represented the sample size for the study. Mean age of patients was 47.2years, with male to female ratio of 3.5:1. Bladder tumor with or without haematuria (31.3%) was the commonest indication for LUT endoscopy, seconded by removal of ureteric double J stents (23.4%). Urethrocystoscopy (74.0%) was the commonest procedure performed predominantly under local anaesthesia, for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.Conclusions: We reported LUT endoscopies in Borno which was commonly indicated in bladder tumors presenting with or without haematuria. Urethrocystoscopy is the commonest procedure. As we get more endourology equipment in the public hospital many of our patients will benefit from these minimally invasive procedures in both lower and upper urinary tract diseases.

This is a correlational study designed to determine the relationship between pattern of study and creativity on students’ academic achievement in Colleges of Education in Borno State. The study set two research objectives and tested two research hypotheses. It used conceptual framework and cognitive approaches; this study is unique because Njidda (1994) investigated the relationship between study habits and performance of Diploma students in Faculty of Education University of Maiduguri while this study investigated the relationship between pattern of study and creativity on students’ academic achievement in Borno State College of Education. The target population fo r this study was 4,517 students who have registered in NCE awarding institutions in Borno State. Purposive sampling technique was used to select two Colleges of Education in Borno State, the stratified random sampling procedure was also employed to select (322) participants 186 students from 351NCE III students' from Kashim Ibrahim College of Education, Maiduguri and 136 students from 210 NCE III students from Umar Ibn Ibrahim College of Education, Science and Technology, Bama. Students’ Pattern of Study Inventory (SPSI) and Students’ Creativity Test (SCT) was used by the researchers. Pearson’s r was used to test the hypotheses raised in this study. The results indicated that there is very low and positive relationship between creativity and patterns of study among students of Colleges of Education and indicated a high and positive relationship between the two variables. Based on the results the study recommended for College of Education counsellors to give more encouragement to the students to improve their pattern of study and use of some designed study time tables to improve outcome o f their studies. There is also the need for r College counsellors to give advice to the students to sustain their effort since the results revealed high and significant relationship between students ’pattern of study and creativity.

Résumé :

The main purpose of this study is to determine the effect of blended teaching method on junior secondary school students’ retention in Basic Technology subject in Biu Educational Zone of Borno State, Nigeria. Two research questions and two null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The study adopted quasi-experimental design of pretest, posttest nonrandomized nonequivalent control group design. The population of the study was 22,968 Junior Secondary School students offering Basic Technology in Biu Educational Zone of Borno State. Purposive sampling technique was used to select two Junior Secondary School in Biu Educational Zone of Borno State for the study. The total sample size was 182 students in their JSS II. The instrument for data collection was developed by the researcher titled: “Basic Technology Retention Test (BTRT)”. The instrument was validated by three experts. A reliability coefficient of 0.88 was obtained using Cronchbach Alpha after the draft instrument was trial tested on 30 JSS II students of Government Day Juniour Secondary School, Damaturu, Yobe State, Nigeria. Mean and standard deviation was used to answer the research questions while z-test and ANOVA was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The finding of the study revealed that the There is significant difference in the mean retention scores of students in Basic Technology taught using blended and lecture teaching method in Biu Educational Zone of Borno State; Male students’ retention mean scores were higher than their female counterpart in both blended and lecture teaching methods. This indicates that blended teaching method is effective in teaching both male and female students. Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made: Government should liaise with the appropriate school authorities in order to encourage and support the use of blended learning platform in secondary schools as this could enhance students’ retention in various subjects.

Based on the results obtained, the college counsellors should use their skills to advice students to sustain and maintain the good relationship between their exhibited patterns of study and self-concept.

Résumé :

The paper investigated the influence of organizational climate on lecturers’ organizational commitment. The research employed a correlational design with a total sample of 60 participants from continuing education institute of Borno State, Nigeria. Data were collected through survey method and analyzed using inferential (Pearson correlation and multiple regression) statistics analysis. The findings of the study depicts the presence of significant and strong relationship between organizational climate and organizational commitment (p < 0.05), also organizational climate appeared to be predictor of lecturers organizational commitment in continuing education institute of Borno State (β= .206, t = 3.564, p< .01). In view of the findings, recommendations were offered to the institute to enable them establish norms with regard to acceptable behaviors in the institute, implications for policy and practice were drawn in addition to need for further studies.

Résumé :

Heavy metal pollution is a global issue of concern which results from both biogenic and anthropogenic activities. Hence, an investigation of soil pollution is pertinent because of its potential threat to human health. The present study examined the concentrations, contamination and pollution load index cum ecological risk factor for some heavy metals in soil samples collected from Borno Express (BOEXP), Tashan Kano (TASKP) and Tashan Bama (TASBP) motor parks within Maiduguri, Borno state of Nigeria. The data obtained showed mean concentration range of 0.34 - 1.18 mg/kg, 0.04 - 0.15 mg/kg, 0.07 - 0.41 and 0.18 - 0.29 mg/kg for Zn, Cr, Cd and Cu respectively. Nonetheless, lead was not detected in any and all samples analyzed. The increasing order of concentrations in the soils followed: Zn > Cu > Cr > Cd, Cu > Cd > Zn > Cr and Cd > Zn > Cu > Cr for BOEXP, TASKP and TASBP motor parks respectively. Notwithstanding, the results showed lower concentrations to the allowable limits of World Health Organization (WHO). Furthermore, the contamination factor of cadmium in the TASKP fell within the (0.10 – 0.25) category, indicative of slight contamination whereas in TASBP, the calculated value 0.5125 was within (0.51 -0.75) category implying severe contamination. The other heavy metals analyzed showed contamination factor as well as pollution index values < 0.1 indicative of very slight contamination.Keywords: Borno Express, Tashan Kano, Tashan Bama, Motor Parks, Contamination Index.

The objective of which is to demonstrate how counselling can maintain marital stability and avoid, minimize and manage the divorce and post-divorce crisis among couples. Marriage is a ‘give and take’ relationship which should be ‘till death do us apart’ affair. Some basic principles of marriage are approval of the couples, payment of bride prize and religious rites, and possible problems of divorce among couples include psychological, social and economic, and causes of divorce are poverty, promiscuity, poor feeding and infertility to mention but a few have been enumerated. Family Ecological Equilibrium Interaction, Family Cognitive Restructuring, Family Psychosocial Harmony Restoration and Group Crisis Intervention strategies were proposed as counselling strategies to increase family stability and mitigate divorce among couples.

New archaeological research in Borno by the Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe-Universität, Frankfurt am Main, Germany, has included the analysis of pottery excavated from several sites during the 1990s. This important investigation made us search through our old files for a statistical analysis of pottery from the same region, which although completed in 1981 was never published. The material came from approximately one hundred surface collections and seven excavated sites, spread over a wide area, and resulted from fieldwork in the 1960s and 1970s. Although old, the analysis remains relevant because it provides a broad geographical context for the more recent work, as well as a large body of independent data with which the new findings can be compared. It also indicates variations in both time and space that have implications for the human history of the area, hinting at the ongoing potential of broadscale pottery analysis in this part of West Africa and having wider implications of relevance to the study of archaeological pottery elsewhere.

The regulation of broadcast religious programming is a critical challenge the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) is facing in Nigeria. In Maiduguri, the capital of the north-eastern Nigerian state of Borno where religion forms a core part of the people’s culture, a great deal of Borno Radio Television (BRTV) and Nigerian Television Authority Maiduguri’s (NTA Maiduguri) airtime is allocated to Islamic preaching during the Muslim’s annual Ramadan fasting. However, there is a dearth of research on whether the airtime those broadcast stations allocate to Islamic programming complies with the NBC code on religious programming. This research gap formed the main research question of this study which was conducted during the second quarter of 2019. Primary data were collected using key informant interviews with five personnel from the two broadcast stations and the Maiduguri office of NBC, while secondary data were obtained through the review of official documents. Key findings showed that the airtime allocatedto religious programmes exceeded the 10% NBC limit, BRTV allocated more airtime to religious programmes than NTA Maiduguri and Islamic programmes were allocated more airtime than programmes of other religions. Recommendations on how to improve compliance to NBC’s regulations were offered at the end.Peraturan program siaran keagamaan merupakan tantangan bagi NationalBroadcasting Commission (NBC)/Komisi Penyiaran Nasional di Nigeria. Namun, ada kelangkaan penelitian tentang apakah jam tayang yang disiarkan oleh stasiun-stasiun siaran itu untuk program Islami. Kesenjangan penelitian ini membentuk pertanyaan penelitian utama yang dilakukan selama kuartal kedua 2019. Data penelitian ini dikumpulkan menggunakan wawancara informan kunci dengan lima personel dari keduanya stasiun siaran dan kantor Maiduguri NBC, sementara data sekunder diperoleh melalui telaah dokumen resmi. Temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa “airtime” (jam tayang) dialokasikan untuk program keagamaan yang melebihi batas 10% NBC, BRTV mengalokasikan lebih banyak “airtime” ke program keagamaan dari NTA Maiduguri dan program Islam dialokasikan lebih banyak “airtime” daripada program agama lain. Implikasi dari penelitian ini adalah perlunya kepatuhan terhadap peraturan NBC.

This paper examined the implementation of Universal Basic Education programme in Borno, Bauchi and Taraba states, Nigeria. The major problems that the paper looked at include lack of infrastructural facilities, storage of teaching and learning material and qualified teachers. Observation and documented evidence from the three Ministries of Education, Local Education Authorities and Universal Basic Commission were used in collecting the data. The study revealed that some of the teachers recruited to participate in the programme had fake certificates. This was discovered through verification of results by the UBE commission in Borno state. Despite the problems observed, the UBE has in the three states employed over 7.000 teachers as well as built and renovated classrooms. It was recommended, among other things that, statistical information on the components that makes teaching and learning effective should be considered before embarking on such an important educational programme for the nation.

Abstract:Little is known of why institutional transfers have been largely disappointing. Berkowitz et al. (2001) have argued that because of what they call the transplant effect, imported law lacks effectiveness unless there is an initial level of familiarity or the imported law is successfully adapted to local legal norms. Yet, history shows that institutional transfers are possible: Why have some countries been more successful than others in importing foreign institutions? The paper introduces a framework for the analysis of the transplant effect, which is based on institutional economics. In the second part, we investigate the case of Borno State in northeastern Nigerian where institutions transferred during colonial rule and upon independence have been largely ineffective. In the case of Borno, the lack of a European educated bureaucratic class, low commitment of the political leadership, generally low levels of education and urbanization contributed to the low effectiveness of imported institutions.

The various activities carried out by the fundamentalist group called Boko Haram have created fear among the populace and the international communities. This group was the first set in Nigeria to be labeled as an insurgent organization by the United State of America and its associates. Since 2009 to date the group has carried out so many violent activities in the North-eastern Nigeria through Kidnapping, suicide bombing, attacks on innocent citizens and robbery. The study explores the usefulness of Geographical Information System (GIS) in understanding the various pattern and nature of insurgency in Borno State. In other to achieve this aim, the study provided the following objectives which include updating the existing database of insurgency activities in Borno State showing the pattern of the nature of insurgency in Borno state from 2009 to 2017 and identifing the area with the highest and lowest insurgency activities in the state. Secondary data where utilized from Armed Conflict Location and Events Dtat (ACLED) 2018 version, and security records. ArcGIS was employed for the analysis of the spatial pattern of the nature of insurgency. The result shows that suicide bombing was the commonest nature of insurgency in the study area with 505 incidence, while attacks on foreigners was the least with 9 incidence. It further shows that Maiduguri had the highest insurgency incidence throughout the period of study. The study therefore recommended that adequate security measures showed be employed, rollout counter violent extremism programs and emphasized the humanitarian dimension of international aid.

Past studies have documented the relevance of strong industrial base to economic development. Although several measures have been put in place to develop the industrial sector, the performance of Micro, Small and Medium Scale Businesses (MSMEs) leaves much to be desired. This study examines socio-economic factors affecting Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises Performance in Maiduguri Borno State, Nigeria. Data was generated from a survey of 84 Micro Small Medium Enterprises operators in Maiduguri and analyzed with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23. Descriptive and Inferential Statistics were used to analyze the data collected. The results from the Exploratory Factor Analysis, Correlation and Multiple Regression Analysis show that insecurity and inadequate infrastructural facilities are the most significant factors affecting MSMEs performance in Borno state. The study therefore recommends that government should provide better security and improve infrastructural facilities such as power supply in order to enhance MSMEs performance.

The study was a survey that investigated the causes and consequences of teenage pregnancy in Borno State, Nigeria. A total of 1,500 parents participated in the study from 15 high, medium and low density residential areas of Maiduguri Metropolis. The sample consisted of 874 (58.27%) males and 626 (41.73%) females. A questionnaire tagged Causes and Consequences of Teenage Pregnancy (CACOTEP) developed by the researchers was used to collect data for the study. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques of frequency counts, percentages and rank ordering. Chi-square (x2) was also used to test the null-hypothesis at 0.05 alpha level of significance. Results of the study indicated poverty, experimenting sex, early sexual debut, single parenting, broken homes, street hawking, lack of moral education, rape, peer influence and exposure to pornographic films as some of the causes of teenage pregnancy while abortion, expulsion from school, loss of self-esteem, risk of contracting HIV/AIDS, VVF, RVF, premature labour/birth and premature death were some of the consequences of teenage pregnancy in Borno State, Nigeria. Significant relationship does not exist between gender and teenage pregnancy as revealed by the study. Sex education/reproductive health education, moral education, discouraging street hawking and inculcating positive social values by counsellors, parents, community and religious leaders using both print and electronic (visual and blind) media, hand bills and staging dramas on the negativities of teenage pregnancy were some of the implications for counselling proffered. It is recommended that the Borno State government should stop girls from hawking, introduce females’ entrepreneurship centers and build counselling centers to engage services of certified counsellors with a view to halting the menace through moral/religious counselling.

Little attention has until now been directed to the rich information on title-holders contained in the two chronicles of the imām Aḥmad b. Furṭū written in 1576 and 1578 respectively. This neglect is partly due to the very confusing style of the imām's writing. In particular, he refers to the three highest ranking Bornoan officials by translating their Bornoan titles into Arabic: the Digma is called ‘al-wazīr al-kabīr’, the great Jarma ‘al-rā'id al-kabīr’, and the Cikama ‘al-ḥājib’. Once the meaning of these Arabic titles is decoded it appears that the political organisation of sixteenth century Borno owes very little to the Islamic model. Furthermore it becomes clear that the commander of the Bornoan corps of musketeers was the great Jarma, an official of Ngizim origin, and not a Turkish military instructor as one may have suspected.However, since Ibn Furṭū is mainly concerned with military activities, only a few functions of the three high-ranking court officials emerge from his account; others have to be inferred from the information provided by nineteenth-century European travellers and from more recent anthropological accounts. In Borno the political organisation of the Sayfuwa state fell to pieces in the first half of the nineteenth century, when al-Amīn al-Kānemī and his successors built up a new system of administration. This progressively supplanted the old system, which was based on a great number of court titles and attendant offices. Important elements of the political organisation of the Sayfuwa survive until the present day in some former vassal states of Borno which became independent in the course of the nineteenth century or earlier.

This study examined the impact of Boko Haram Insurgency on the socio-economic development of Borno State, Nigeria. Three research objectives, three research questions and three research hypotheses were formulated to guide this study. The study was based on the Karl Marx Theory of Violence Conflict. The study was a descriptive survey and was carried out in Borno State. A sample size of 400 respondents was determined using the Taro Yamani formula. The respondents were made up of Military personnel and civilians which were selected based on a multi-stage sampling technique. Questionnaire and Interview were the instruments used for data collection. The instrument gave high reliability of 0.84 when subjected to a reliability test using the Cronbach Alpha method. Collated data from the study were analyzed using frequency, mean, standard deviation and regression analysis. Results from this study showed that there existed a weak relationship between Boko Haram insurgency and economic activities, food, security, and educational development in Borno State. The study concluded that the Boko Haram situation demands the articulation of a comprehensive strategy and the political will to address its root causes and dangerous dynamics, focusing on inhibiting opportunities for recruitment and radicalization, and choke its financial windpipe, amongst others. The study noted that the Nigerian military has too often taken civilian casualties too easy into account. By killing citizens in the North, the population's frustration against the military increases, thereby increasing Boko Haram's appeal as an alternative. Thus, it recommended that the government should rather put its focus on the protection of civilians, witnesses and key peacemakers such as moderate Imams who preach against the insurgency.

This is a correlational study design to determine the relationship between creativity and self-concept on students' academic achievement in Colleges of Education in Borno State. The study set three research objectives and tested three research hypotheses. For the purpose of this study, two main approaches were used; cognitive approaches were applied to creativity while humanistic approaches were also applied to self-concept. The uniqueness of this study lies in the area where Xiaxia (1999) investigated gender differences in their examination of the relationship between creativity and academic achievement. While this study focuses on creativity and self-concept on students’ academic achievement, the target population for this study was 4,517 students who have registered in NCE awarding institutions in Borno State. Purposive sampling technique was used to select two Colleges of Education in Borno State, the stratified random sampling procedure was also employed to select 322 participants 186 students from 351 NCE III students’ from Kashim Ibrahim College o f Education, Maiduguri and 136 students from 210 NCE III students from Umar Ibn Ibrahim College of Education, Science and Technology, Bama. Students’ Creativity Test (SCT) and Students’ Self-concept Scale (SUSS) was used by the researchers. Pearson ‘r’ was used to test the hypotheses raised in this study. The results indicated a very low and positive relationship between creativity and self-concept among students of Colleges of Education, the results indicated a high and positive relationship between the two variables and the results also indicated a very high and positive relationship between the two variables. Based on the results obtained the following Counselling strategy are suggested; there is the need for counselling personnel to guide the students on how well they should improve their creativity and self-concept through enhancing the students ’ imaginative thinking and improvised their needs by the authority

The way the traditional Borno scholars represent Qur'anic Arabic in Old Kanembu testifies to their understanding of Arabic grammatical structures based on traditional grammatical treatises. The function of Old Kanembu is motivated by the grammatical module of tafsīr studies, which includes iʿrāb, ḥarf, naḥw and other related disciplines. However, the Borno ʿulamāʾ do not strictly adhere to Arabic linguistic theory and also exploit the distinctive linguistic properties of the Old Kanembu language. In its elaborated output form, tafsīr in Old Kanembu incorporates four explanatory levels: (a) morphosyntactic; (b) phrase by phrase / lexical; (c) sentential and (d) interpretative. Thus, it is built on two interrelated platforms: metalanguage (i.e. language designed for description of language) and exegesis (i.e. interpretation of the text). This combination makes Old Kanembu a very powerful ‘software’ with a solid foundation in the science of tafsīr, that allows its users to check their own knowledge of the Qur'an with the precision required by the Arabic grammatical sciences. In its basic grammatical format, Old Kanembu is a platform for the exegete who provides tafsīr in full format. Thus, Old Kanembu serves both grammatical and interpretative purposes perfectly.

This paper investigates challenges of teaching Literature-in-English in secondary schools within Yobe and Borno states in north-eastern Nigeria, and the impact this has on university admission requirements. A core requisite for admissions into B.A English and LL.B. in all Nigerian universities is an O’ level credit pass in SSCE or its equivalent in Literature-in-English. This poses a major challenge to many candidates from Yobe and Borno States due to either the non-teaching or the inability of the students to pass with the required credit in the end of secondary school examinations. Adopting a mixed-method approach, the paper investigates reasons that bring about these problems within the period 2009 – 2019. Quantitative and qualitative approaches, through questionnaires and interviews, and Consensus Workshop, through Focus Group Discussion (FGD), were adopted to gather the data. The paper finds and concludes that socio-cultural factors, unavailability of effective and specialist teachers and gender issues were the major reasons for the non-teaching of the subject and the failure of students in public secondary schools to pass with credit in the two states. The paper recommends amenable measures to be taken to address these problems and challenges.

Malaria disproportionately affects all ages with a high burden among children below five years. Thus, control measures are deployed including Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC). The present study assessed the impacts of SMC on malaria burden among subjects aged 3–59 months in Borno State, Nigeria. Twenty (20) clusters were randomly selected from accessible 16 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Borno State, Nigeria, and SMC was deployed in 10 of the clusters by administering a full dose of amodiaquine plus sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine at monthly intervals for 4 months consecutively. Three hundred and ninety-nine children were enrolled in the study. A structured questionnaire was used to obtain demographic and malaria-related data. Thick blood smear, thin blood smear, and capillary sample were collected two weeks after the 4th cycle of SMC. The prevalence of malaria and anaemia was determined among the subjects and for the clusters. The proportions of the female (46.4%; 185/399) and male (53.6%; 214/399) subjects were similar (p>0.05) with subjects aged 24–47 months (35.8%; 143/399) accounting for the highest proportion (p<0.05). Malaria prevalence was 10.3% (41/399) and was higher among non-SMC subjects (15.9%; 31/195) than among SMC subjects (4.9%; 10/204) (p<0.05, df = 1, χ2 = 10.8). Malaria prevalence was higher in non-SMC clusters (80.0%; 8/10) than in SMC clusters (30.0%; 3/10) (p<0.05, df = 1, χ2 = 40.5). The mean haematocrit of the 399 subjects was 34.0 ± 5.3% with an anaemia prevalence of 18.1% (72/399). The mean haematocrit was higher among SMC subjects (35.4 ± 5.0% vs. 33.1 ± 4.2%; p<0.05) while anaemia prevalence was higher among non-SMC subjects (21.5% vs. 14.6%; p<0.05, df = 1, χ2 = 2.8). Of the SMC subjects, 4.9% reported adverse drug reactions. SMC is safe and significantly reduced malaria burden among children in Borno State, and thus, the measure could be deployed in the state for effective malaria control.

Résumé :

The seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) antibodies in dogs in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, Nigeria, was determined using the Latex Aagglutination Test (LAT). Antibodies (LAT titer > 1:64) to T. gondii were found in 42 (25%) of the animals examined. Antibody titers in positive dogs ranged from 1:64 (15 dogs) to1:2048 (3 dogs). There was a significant statistical difference (P < 0.05) between age groups of dogs, the prevalence being higher in dogs ≥ 3 years (Χ2 = 13.73 P = 0.0002, OR 2.80 CI95% 1.28-6.13 P = 0.008). Pure Alsatians and their crosses were less likely to be seropositive (OR cross breed 0.28 CI95% 0.13-0.61 P = 0.001, OR Alsatian 0.16 CI95% 0.04-0.58 P = 0.002). The high prevalence of T. gondii infection that we found in dogs suggests a need for a larger survey to determine the national prevalence and identify possible risk factors in different agro-climatic zones. Such a study will help in formulating nation-wide control measures for toxoplasmosis.
