Résumé :
Despite various global and local economic crises, the shift of some readers to screen reading, growing online shopping habits, and the shorter time spent on reading books, physical bookstores are able to change and retain their customers. This research is a continuation of a 2013 study in order to capture the current situation and identify the changes that have taken place in Lithuanian physical bookstores over the past five years. During the research, the list of bookstores operating in Lithuania compiled in 2013 was updated and clarified, and an analysis of the collected data and comparison with the data of 2013 were performed. The results showed that from 2013 to 2018 the number of bookstores in Lithuania decreased by 18.8%, to 168 units. On average, the number of inhabitants per Lithuanian bookstore increased by 16.2% and reached 16,720 inhabitants per bookstore; the number of municipalities with no bookstores at all increased to 15 (9 in 2013). The largest Lithuanian bookstore networks remained the same: Vaga and Pegasas, which maintained almost the same number of bookstores – 33 bookstores at the end of 2018. The number of medium-sized bookstore networks decreased, and only one of the nine small bookstore networks (2–3 bookstores), which owned two bookstores in 2013, remained. Such changes show that the two major bookstore networks Vaga and Pegasas are strengthening their market position. Calculated by the number of bookstores, in 2018 they already ran 39% of the market. The range of available books in physical Lithuanian bookstores has decreased – from an average 9 thousand titles in 2013 up to 6 thousand titles in 2018. It seems that the 2004–2008 race between physical bookstores for the largest range of book titles in the past is now witnessing an increase in the choice of additional goods in bookstores, sometimes even exceeding their book sales. The decrease and change in the number and range of physical bookstores in Lithuania since 2008 was due to several reasons – from the economic crisis at that time, the continuing decline of the population to the decline of book reading habits, and the transition of some readers to on-screen reading and online shopping.

What needs to be improved at present are the following: the staff who have not yet reached standard conditions; the high transport cost of books; the lack of innovation in cultural and creative products; the limited rights and interests of members; and the serious mismatch between customer flow and marketing volume. Based on the results, the author provides suggestions for its development in optimizing products, reducing pricing, training staff, broadening channels, and other aspects.

Résumé :
The author analyses the problems of erosion of the book culture and the role of bookishness in the contemporary Western and Russian identities. While analysing the processes of disappearance and displacement of bookshops, the author presumes that culture of bookstores and communication subcultures in them cannot compete with networks and e-commerce. It is assumed that the logic of capitalism favours the progress of on-line bookstores, specialising in the serial and mass literature while independent bookstores prefer to sell intellectual, non-fiction, and academic books that are not interesting to consumer readers of mass culture. The author tries to analyse causes of private non-mass bookstores crisis. The author believes that intellectuals of 2000s were optimistic in their prognosis for the development of bookstores as spaces of cultural initiatives. By the end of 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the number of independent bookstores decreased significantly when on-line bookstores occupied their place. It is assumed that the cultures of reading, book collections, personal libraries lost the positions they held in the 20th century and even in the first decade of the 21st century. The author presumes that independent bookstores became cultural ghettos and intellectual reservations, when net bookstores became successful actors of the mass culture. In general, it is predicted that heterogeneous, regionally localised minority book cultures and reading strategies of the New Medievalism may replace the “mass” book as a cultural institution of a modern political imagined communities as elements of the dying Gutenberg Galaxy with its heterogeneous national identities.

Résumé :
Why does W. G. Sebald’s Austerlitz escape from the laws of fictionality and factuality? How do so many of the people and place names inside of it start so improbably with the letter A? Why do so many iterations of A—as initials, as markings, or as individual letters—appear somewhat frequently and prominently? Why does the return of the repressed coincide with the completion of a crossword puzzle taking place in a used bookstore? Why is the puzzle located in the Telegraph? Why, of all people, is the owner of the bookstore named Penelope? What role do the bookstores, museums, and libraries play? Finally, what is the question that Sebald’s Austerlitz is supposed to answer? To answer these questions, a historically problematized rereading of the text is necessary. In terms of the History of Ideas, these questions recall Walter Benjamin’s interpretation of Proust and his Arcades Project; in terms of cultural history, the rise of the crossword puzzle; and in terms of the sources behind Austerlitz, a book and a radio program that have been either ignored or underappreciated in the criticism.

In this paradigm of adult control, children’s opinions are often overlooked.’ The goal of this paper is to review the current literature on reader preferences, with the intent of understanding the intersection of the children, adults, and publishing constituencies. Résumé :
The article analyzes the diary records of the outstanding Soviet physicist, Academician and President of the USSR Academy of Sciences Sergei Ivanovich Vavilov (1891—1951), dedicated to his reader’s perception of contemporary Soviet literature. Widely-read S.I. Vavilov collected his private library of 37 thousand volumes; he regularly visited bookstores, mainly antiquarian and second-hand bookshops. Despite the prevailing interest to the old books, S.I. Vavilov knew Soviet literature, used its images in his popular science works (S.A. Yesenin) and diary characteristics (I. Ilf and E. Petrov). The few diary entries with the assessments of the works of Soviet writers (A.N. Tolstoy, A.E. Korneychuk, K.I. Chukovsky, A. Bely, A.K. Vinogradov, V.V. Veresaev, M.A. Bulgakov, etc.) most commonly demonstrate critical attitude to them. It was defined by both his classical aesthetic preferences, formed in his youth on the material of Russian literature of the 19th century, and by his unflattering attitude to the Soviet reality, which Academician did not show publicly, allowing just certain statements in his private diaries. The generally negative perception of Soviet literature indicates that, contrary to the claims of some researchers, S.I. Vavilov was not a Stalinist and was quite sceptical of the socialist reality.

Résumé :
Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky is a Russian great writer, thinker, philosopher and publicist. His skill influenced the literature and culture of the whole world, including Polish. This article discusses the role of the author of Crime and Punishment in Polish literature and culture, including the presence of his works in Polish theater and cinema. Many Polish writers, who studied the artistic skills of Dostoevsky, were attracted by the composition and structure of his novel, introspection and reflection of characters showing interpersonal relationships, a “borderline” state of mind. Even more important than the recognition by Polish writers of the artistry of Dostoevsky is the influence on them of his philosophical concepts, especially the concept of personality. The specificity of Dostoevsky’s technique is also related to the fact that the Russian writer created negative stereotypes of Poles. It must be remembered that the reception of Dostoevsky in Poland in the first decade after the Second World War was significantly limited. Today, the works of the Russian writer are transferred to theatrical scenes, on the basis of which series, full-length or animated films are shot. There are many editions of his short stories and novels in bookstores, often translated again.

Résumé :
The article describes the use of software, written by the author, to analyze some Italian literature works from the last century by using sentiment analysis. The software is lexicon-based, with a sentiment Italian dictionary including about 30,000 positive and negative words. To set the sentiment of each word, a scale of points ranging from 0 to 100 was introduced. To check the overall sentiment in literary works, the software makes use of a new parameter, the index of positivity. It is found that sentiment analysis is an efficient way to detect the tendency of opinions (positive or negative) in literature works. The results of this analysis coincide with the critics on the classification of authors’ tendencies. The index of positivity could be useful also for bookstores: the customers, checking the index, would expect in advance, which is the overall tendency in a literary work. In this case, it would be easier to select a certain kind of work, according to the taste or the wish of customers.

Résumé :
This study attempted to explain the promotion system and changes in China's publishing policy during the 13th 5-year rule period (2016-2020) and the 14th 5-year rule period (2021-2025) through literature analysis of Chinese publishing policy documents, academic research, and reporting. First of all, China's publishing-related ministries continue to support the publishing industry and public libraries during the 12th five-year period, expanding reading infrastructure in rural areas, and support overseas publications. In addition, the reading rate of Chinese people is also increasing along with the increase in the publication of paper and e-books by domestic Chinese publishers. In addition, since the Central Propaganda Department of the Communist Party of China became the responsible department of China's publishing policy from March 2018, China's publishing policy promotion system has strengthened its connection with the Communist Party and Xi Jinping's ideas and policy promotion and education. However, despite the ongoing difficulties of offline bookstores in China due to the discount competition of Chinese e-commerce companies, Chinese publishing ministries do not implement a book sales price system and only local governments in some administrative districts provide subsidies for offline bookstores. In addition, copyright infringement of overseas video content by some Chinese companies and the prohibition of publications criticizing China's political and social problems continue.

The author of this article deals with the issue of the historical evolution of the book publishing and distribution in RSSM in 1940–1989. The author makes a historical retrospective on the historical evolution of book distribution wich was generally attributed to the „Moldknigotorg” - a republican association of the book trade that monopolized the book market in that period. This state structure for has played a substantial role in promoting the book among the mass reader. Thus, the idea of launching the “Luminița” project appears, which was, in fact, an instrument of “taming” the writers against the Soviet regime and of giving up ideas of national identity. The study brings again into description the main scientific realizations, the works, the personalities in this sphere, presenting in the same time also the political-ideological part of the writing literature in this Soviet period.

Therefore, a study is needed to determine the structure of the sentence structure used. The purpose of this study is to find out the sentence structure in the 2019 literacy reading book for elementary students published by the Language Development and Development Agency in 2019. According to Indonesian Standard Grammar, the sentence structure in question is the type of sentence based on the number of clauses, the type of predicate, the category of syntax, and completeness of the elements. In this paper, the intended sentence structure is only limited by the sentence structure based on the type of predicate. The research method uses a qualitative descriptive approach, namely by noting the sentence structure of fourteen 2019 literacy reading books for elementary school students to see the type of predicate. The results of the study are expected to be able to show the types of sentence structure in the 2019 literacy reading books for elementary students. The results of this study are also expected to be used as a reference for teachers. parents, and book writers in selecting and writing appropriate reading books for elementary school-aged children.

Physical books are an important part of the development of a civilization, history has repeatedly shown the huge impact of knowledge, ideas, and information that was spread directly starting from the era of Mesopotamia, Ancient Greek, Baghdad, Renaissance, and continuing until the present day. Indonesia has a stigma of low interest in reading, but socio-culture is not a natural thing but something systematic and created slowly. Pondok Cina Station has a history of causing hundreds of scholars to demonstrate and hold up KRL due to the eviction of 35 secondhand book stalls to modernize the station. A strong inner bond between scholars and literature is a reminder that physical books are not dead and need to be studied to achieve quality and widely useful socio-culture. Secondhand Bookstore and Physical Books are closely related to various educational institutions, apart from their cheap prices, they also have easy access to read the books beforehand. Secondhand Bookstore become an interesting opportunity in an empathetic movement that pays attention to one of human primitive abilities, namely cognitive. Empathizing with Secondhand Bookstores and Physical Books aims to find and examine the sweet spot that can provide a place that encourages users to be interested in literature, by using the heterotopia design method and emptiness (suwung) philosophy to give birth to a place that ignites a new culture that can be developed systematically and progressively to achieve a new era of literature.

The article examines the work of bookstores and music stores in provincial cities. Their owners successfully adopted their manners of doing business of their colleagues from the two Russian capital cities and formed individual advertising mechanisms of their commercial operations that brought steady and stable incomes. At the present time, the characteristic features and structures of the small enterprises of that time period that were in serious competition with each other and worked to increase consumer demand and expand the market for their products, are of great interest to researchers. Among them is the Kashkin dynasty, which created a successful network of sales of books and music in Voronezh, Orel, Tver and other provincial cities. Its representatives, two brothers, Vladimir Dmitrievich and Lev Dmitrievich Kashkin, realized their potentials in detail in their commercial, creative, and social activities. The Kashkins’ bookstores and libraries epitomized their unique family experience, observed upon acquaintance with their special catalogues, which provided a distinct documentary testimony of the era. They contain valuable information about the structure and the content of the book and library funds, their quantitative and qualitative indicators, and their system of working with clients. The author of the article sees as being especially important the opening of new categories for sales of musical literature and musical instruments. In this context, this material has not yet appeared in the focus of scholarly research and appears for the first time from the position of comprehension the music publishing business in the Russian culture of the second half of the 19th and the early 20th centuries.

This development reflects the high appreciation of science, the dissemination of knowledge through bookstores and literary salons, as well as the critical role of the clergy as educators and intellectual leaders in Islamic society.

Résumé :
The article examines aspects of the development of the visual book, in particular the graphic novel, as the newest synthetic art form, which combines the visual and the verbal. The exploration is devoted to the analysis of the evolution of the graphic novel: from a simple comic book form to a meaningful novel, from a series of drawings to a recognized literary genre. The popularity of the graphic novel continues to grow. Its place in the artistic coordinate system and its significance for the culture of the beginning of the XXI century are studied. The newest kind of synthetic art shows good dynamics of development and aspires to take the place among literary works. Modern graphic novel addresses serious issues, constantly improving the form and content. The article analyzes the artistic features of the graphic novel and its national differences. Despite the peculiarities of graphic novels in the United States, Western Europe, Japan, and Ukraine, there has been a clear convergence of publication formats in recent decades, although each of the works, such as manga, BD, or Ukrainian painting, depicts its national hero. The recognition of graphic novels as a separate art form was facilitated by the nominations and awards of prestigious literary prizes. Despite considerable criticism, art critics have acknowledged that "graphics are becoming a new power tool for storytelling". Graphic novels are becoming increasingly important in the field of publishing. A separate place for a visual work of literature has appeared on the shelves of bookstores. Traditional bookstores and libraries offer a wider selection of graphic novels. Sales of graphic novels are growing.

Résumé :
Upon the 90s of 20th century, in the diversification as well as ‘complexity’ of social and cultural norms, the highness of Chinese literary reform slowed down. The vibrant artistic peaks, under the influence of Western philosophical trends, gradually cooled off. It was known that enlightened spirit that shined brightly in the beginning of the reform was unlikely to replicate in all corners of secular society – a society in which successful businessmen were the main driver. Meanwhile, not going public in bookstores, in theaters, or on television means that arts remained a display item. Therefore, art was never closer to the market like this period. Literature tended to depart from the central norms into the periphery. Chinese academics in general and literature in particular, at that time, were not lagging behind the synchronic advances in the West because it was inherited from an earlier period of ideological liberalization in which researchers as well as literary authors were trained on the basics. This essay studies the reception of the influence from Western philosophical trends on Chinese literature by the second half of the 20th century with the aim of partly explaining the above phenomenon.

Résumé :
There is a wealth of popular literature available on dog behavior and training; sourcing reliable and trustworthy advice is important to achieving successful training. The aim of this study was to select five best-selling (at that time) dog training books, and review their general content and references to basic learning theory and human communicative cues. An Internet search was performed on three online bookstores’ websites for “best selling” “dog training” books. The books were by Millan and Peltier (2006), Fennell (2002), Stilwell (2005), Pryor (1999), and Monks of New Skete (2002). The results showed marked differences across all books, including inconsistencies in the depth of information provided, and some starkly contrasting training methods were advocated. Overall, these books were not all considered to function as instructional manuals. The persistent popularity of these books suggests that they have likely contributed appreciably to the type of information accessed by dog guardians.

The article reconstructs the notion of the Boundary Object developed by Susan Leigh Star and James R. Griesemer, and asks how this concept can be made fruitful for a literary network analysis. Boundary objects seem to be especially interesting for the media history and social history of literature. They enable a rereading of institutions and organizations such as bookstores, libraries, reading societies, and salons, but also of major editorial projects.

Résumé :
This study aims to describe the contribution of Abbasid civilization to education both covering Abbasid history, policies related to scientific development, and developing educational institutions. This research is a literature research by emphasizing historical aspects with heuristics, criticism, interpretation and histography steps. The results of the study showed that there were several policies implemented by the government to develop science and civilization which included translation projects, rihlah 'ilmiyyah and the construction of educational institutions which included libraries, kuttab, mosques, madrasas, art studios, bookstores, observatories, ribath and zawiyyah. When contextualized with Islamic education today, there are several alternatives offered by the Abbasid State. First, in addition to using a normative approach, an experimental approach in education is needed as a solutive alternative to facing industrial challenges. Second, to form educated people, there needs to be a synergy of all elements, not just educational institutions. Third, Islamic educational institutions must have a concentration in certain sciences on the basis of Islamic norms.

Résumé :
For several years now, James Baldwin’s life, portrait, and work have enjoyed a central place in the public eye. Although social and audiovisual media have made significant contributions to Baldwin’s return to the cultural and political limelight, the circulation of his published writings remains a vital part of the author’s ubiquity. Moreover, since Baldwin’s omnipresence in bookstores transcends an American or even Anglophone context, this international and multilingual circulation contributes to Baldwin’s world literary standing, as befits the self-described “transatlantic commuter.” This article moves beyond the customary approach to Baldwin’s published success by tracing presently circulating European translations of his work. The article examines the historical developments in Baldwin’s European circulation-through-translation from the time of his death (1987) up until the present, including brief discussions of the French, Italian, and West German translations from the 1960s onward. Of special interest are the pioneering and dominant roles that French and Italian publishers have played since the late 1990s, and the acceleration in circulation that took place across the continent in the wake of the films I Am Not Your Negro and If Beale Street Could Talk. The article concludes with a few remarks on the translation strategies of several key publishers in France, Italy, Germany, and Romania.

How to realize your self? This question, reflective of neoliberal understandings of individual subjectivity and the sacred, is the basis of the Egyptian self-help guide whose artwork graces this issue's cover. The book is one among hundreds like it that can be bought in Egypt's bookstalls and bookstores, from where they circulate through the homes and workplaces of readers. This growing and popular corpus is the focus of Jeffrey T. Kenney's “Selling Success, Nurturing the Self: Self-Help Literature, Capitalist Values, and the Sacralization of Subjective Life in Egypt,” the first of two articles that make up the section “Therapeutic Discourses.” Kenney argues that as capitalism has expanded in Egypt, it has given rise to a pervasive consumer culture and, relatedly, a self-help literature that competes with Islamic etiquette manuals. Mixing modern ideas and ethical practices to form varied and unpredictable combinations, self-help has become a flat universal idiom, but what has given it its legitimacy in Egypt is its association with local tradition. “The inherent message of self-help,” Kenney writes, “is not simply the glorification of the individual but, more pointedly, the sacralization of the self and subjective life choices—an interpretive trend that, in Egypt, simultaneously functionalizes Islam and fosters new understandings of what it means to be Muslim.”

In this research, the authors assess the applicability of the SERVCON model to the e-commerce (e-service) environment in the context of student textbook purchases. Following a literature review, a survey was developed based on previous scales; items were modified to fit the e-commerce environment. The survey was administered to college students in business courses, and 281 usable responses were received. Factor analysis resulted in several items being dropped, but the six factor SERVCON model was validated in the online environment. The validated model was used to compare service convenience perceptions between students purchasing books online and students purchasing books by traditional methods (brick-and-mortar). The service convenience measures for online purchases than brick-and-mortar purchases for decision, access, benefit, transaction, and postbenefit convenience. The study validates the SERVCON model in the e-service environment, and extends work that explains consumer behavior in e-services. Traditional bookstores need to explore options to improve services in the brick-and-mortar environment. Online vendors can improve their web sites to provide better service convenience to their customers.

AbstractThis article analyzes the growing interest in Jews and all things Jewish in contemporary Poland—from the spectacular popularity of festivals of Jewish culture to the opening of Judaica bookstores and Jewish cuisine restaurants; from the development of Jewish studies programs at various universities and the creation of several museums to artists’ and public intellectuals’ engagements with Poland's Jewish past and Polish-Jewish relations more broadly. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, over sixty formal interviews with Jewish and non-Jewish activists, and informal conversations with participants in various Jewish-centered initiatives, I argue that this cultural phenomenon is related to the attempt by specific political and social groups to build a pluralistic society in an ethnically and denominationally homogenous nation-state. I build on the literature on nationalism and symbolic boundaries by showing that bringing back Jewish culture and “resurrecting the Jew” is a way to soften, stretch, and reshape the symbolic boundaries of the nation that the Right wants to harden and shrink using Catholicism as its main tool.

Résumé :
The presentation in this paper departs from Habermas's description in Technical Progress and the Social Life-World (1971). Technical progress produces a realm or world called the system, the world of engineering, which can be compared with the everyday world, namely the life-world. This description aims to reveal the extreme contradiction between the two which also departs from the thoughts of Snow, Huxley, Schelsky, and Frayer. The approach used in this research is the study of texts: the method of literature or literature review. In this case, a literature search is carried out by reading various books, journals, and other publications related to certain research topics. Checked the list of books and journals related to Habermas, both in private libraries, campus libraries, regional (public) libraries, bookstores, and the internet in the form of e-books and e-journals – browsing websites. From this bibliographic search, several sources were found in the form of books, journals, magazines, and proceedings. In his study, Habermas sees that the two worlds have their interests. That is, the direction of development of both presupposes a reciprocal relationship. However, this relationship can also be unidirectional which can dominate other areas. To avoid this domination, Habermas offers a solution in the form of dialogue, public communication that is free from domination, which can be carried out through political policies. Habermas sees that public communication is the only way to fight the domination of the system. By turning to communication, according to Habermas, pessimism over technical progress that has resulted in disaster for humanity can be overcome.

Résumé :
In the context of promotion there are interesting phenomena related to the process of traveling chicklit and teenlit novels since going out from the publisher's warehouse to the readers. The process is through systems and mechanisms that involve many professional workers outside the field of literature. They are the marketing profession; from a public-relation, sales-promotion, to event organizers. To spread the chicklit and teenlit novels, team-work utilizes mass psychology conditions. The potential for public consumerism is exploited through various strategies. Every major publisher such as Elex Media Komputindo, GagasMedia, and Gramedia Pustaka Utama, has a promotion and marketing division that is responsible for selling products and ensuring the smooth distribution of products to consumers in the broadest range of regions. This business involves professional workers in certain fields that work in synergy. Promotional tips are carried out through event launching, book launching, book reviews, "meet the authors", and others. That way, marketing novels is not enough just to be stacked in a shop window, but promoted on a large scale through magazines, newspapers, book covers, even on-line bookstores (e-shop) on the internet.

AbstractHow to cope with the end of utopia? How to move from making history on a day-to-day basis to capitalizing on a legend? That is the dilemma Russian veterans of the Donbas insurgency have faced since the exalting atmosphere of Novorossiya faded away. In this article, I trace the transformations of the Novorossiya utopia from the point at which Russian volunteer fighters began to return to Russia and found themselves compelled to reinvent themselves in a new context. I first look at the difficult reconversion from war to politics of Donbas heroes such as Igor Strelkov and Aleksandr Borodai and how their efforts to launch new structures based on their war legitimacy have succeeded or failed. I then turn to investigate the birth of new heroes, such as the writer Zakhar Prilepin, who wave the metaphorical flag of Donbas at a time when exaltation of the war has declined. After that, I explore how Novorossiya has become a literature genre that occupies the shelves of Russian bookstores, spanning from Novorossievedenie—the “science of Novorossiya”—to the rich subgenre of war memoirs and veteran diaries.

There is no extensive secondary literature on travel guides, despite their popularity among readers and their status as one of the best-selling genres in bookstores. The medium was more thoroughly researched in the disciplines of geography, tourism and folklore, especially in the late 1980s and 1990s, although different aspects and points were deepened depending on the discipline and thus a “compact field of reliable knowledge and theories” could not be developed. (Wicke 2011: 22). Buhl (2020: 39) concludes that travel guide research is primarily concerned with the historical change in the genre from its emergence to the 20th century or attempts to create a typology of this broad, diverse genre. However, for the purpose of this research, of particular interest are the publications that refer to the ways in which the target countries are presented from an intercultural perspective; still, the number of these studies has remained insignificant to this day. The most recent and very comprehensive study comes from Gesa Wicke (2011), who fills the research gap with her study of the staging of foreignness in tourist guides to Sicily. The subject of analysis based on available research for the medium travel guide will be the travel guide form Philine von Oppeln “Nordmazedonien. Mit Skopje, Ohridsee und allen Nationalparks” (2020).

Résumé :
The Serbs in Old Serbia and Macedonia in the late 19th century, in national terms, were not recognized by the Turkish authorities. Their position in this region made it difficult for the Bulgarian and Greek propaganda and armed troops of Albanians, so the Serbs had to struggle to defend themselves and defend their national identity. One aspect of this struggle was the educational and cultural activity reflected in the establishment and development of the Serbian primary and secondary schools, the establishment of bookstores, and church-school communities. Support in all this was given by t he educational institutions, which had the task of minimizing foreign influences and using the potentials at their disposal to achieve national integrity. Thanks to their existence, at least for a short time, it seemed that the prevailing attitude was that the Serbs in those areas at the same time formed a bridge and an insurmountable gap between East and West. Besides the State government, support in dealing with educational issues was given by the Saint Sava Association established at the initiative of Svetomir Nikolajevic, professor of History and Literature at the Great School. Academic, political, and national activities of the Association were expressed through the establishment and work of Saint Sava evening, Preparatory and Theological-Teaching School in Belgrade.

Résumé :
Studying the translations in Swedish language of Italian twentieth century women writers, one is astonished by the randomness and the incompleteness. It is often the case of single translations published almost haphazardly and with lack of consistency when it comes to follow up the work of an author. Despite favorable critics, despite a Nobel Prize, the Italian women writers of the twentieth century have never really been established in Sweden. Except for a brief period, Elsa Morante and Natalia Ginzburg. Only the works of the latter could in theory rise to the status of a classic of in the mind of Swedish readers. This is not the case, however, of books by Grazia Deledda, which after a very successful period around the Nobel Prize in the twenties, have disappeared from the shelves of bookstores and libraries. It is as if these authors have fallen into some gray area of literature, almost an intangible cemetery for forgotten novels and old translations. This work represents the first outcome of a mapping of the publishing of Italian women twentieth century writers in Sweden. Hence, the interest is also to publish a bibliography hitherto unedited of these authors in Swedish language translation.

It was inevitable that after the demise of the series of military dictatorships that ruled Argentina so violently between 1976 and 1983, the return to democratic institutions would occasion an outpouring of the kinds of writing and cultural activities banned or censored by the generals. Movie distributors in Argentina today cannot keep up with the demand for films that could not be seen during these years (or were seen only with extensive and capricious cuts). Theaters are competing with each other to present works dealing with human rights violations and related themes. Television programming, which the military assiduously controlled, has now begun to evince some social consciousness. Meanwhile, the print media have filled bookstores and kiosks with myriad publications bearing witness to the attempt to recover a cultural tradition altered and fragmented by the so-called Proceso de Reorganización Nacional.

Types of independent work with the coursebook, additional materials are necessary to have when studying or reading books and other manuals. Selected types of readers (based on lectures “Students' independent work with the book” by I. P. Lvov), the preferences of readers on the nature of the literature and recommendations for its choice. It is substantiated that, according to I. P. Lvov, the book plays an important role in the development of thinking and speech culture of students. The Ukrainian teacher singled out four groups of students. Representatives of the first group are only interested in the reading process. To the second group of readers I. P. Lvov included people who like to read adventure literature and detective stories. The third group consisted of readers who are interested in serious, scientific literature, new books of modern bookstores. To the fourth type of readers, the scientist referred those who seek knowledge and therefore makes serious demands on the book. It is proved that the Ukrainian teacher emphasized that the effectiveness of reading books is possible if the reader has a system of knowledge in a particular field, has the skills of good orientation in the text with the selection of basic principles and ideas. The result of mental work should be clearly designed in the form of writing or speaking, and the effectiveness of the process of working with the book depends not only on speed but also on the method of reading.

Résumé :
An examination of popular advice literature geared toward Muslims living in the West, such as the type commonly available in U.S. mosques and at online Islamic bookstores, indicates that there exist at least two potentially conflicting narratives regarding the ?ij?b (the veil or headcovering) as a pious practice. The first narrative presents female sexuality as a natural and positive force, as long as it is properly channeled. The ?ij?b, in this narrative, is not meant to categorically repress women’s erotic nature, but is a pragmatic social practice meant to avoid eroticism in the public sphere, where it would be a source of temptation and disorder. Often corresponding to this narrative is a notion of (female) sexuality as constant, and an ideology that deemphasizes gender differences. A second narrative presents erotic desire and fulfillment as a marker of attachment to the world and an assertion of the ego-self (nafs), and therefore negative, even in the context of marriage. In this view, the ?ij?b is an ascetic practice, a means by which a woman may discipline her self and develop a greater spiritual-moral faculty. This narrative, in many instances, considers sexuality to be malleable, and also tends to be paired with an emphasis on sexual difference. This paper seeks to tease out the conflicting models of the erotic that emerge in this genre of writing. It further suggests that deviations from a text’s core narrative and appeal to the opposing narrative betrays a lack of commitment to either a particular narrative of veiling or a particular model of eroticism. Rather, such deviations suggest an instrumental use of these narratives and models in favor of the predetermined conclusion, which is the injunction to veil, and to which end both models of eroticism and both narratives of veiling are bent. A final objective is to show, by drawing on ethnographic research, that the conflicting models of eroticism found in popular advice literature are mirrored in the thinking of the contemporary Western Muslim women who are the intended readers of this literature, and to reflect upon the possible consequences of this theoretical conflict upon Western Muslim readership.

Résumé :
The article examines the activities of the Library of the National Academy of Sciences in Lviv, which ranked third among Lviv book collections and had the largest systematic collection of Ukrainian literature in the world. The library was founded by Oleksandr Konyskyi, and the librarians were O. Makovey, M. Voroniy, M. Hrushevskyi, K. Pankivskyi, M. Pavlyk, D. Korenets, I. Krevetskyi, and V. Doroshenko. Attention is focused on three sources of books coming to the library: gifts from famous figures, exchange with foreign scientific institutions, and purchases from bookstores and antique stores. The donations of V. Antonovych, O. Barvinskyi, O. Borodai, B. Zaklinskyi, I. Franko, Yu. Tselevich and others joined the gatherings of the NTSH. The exchange took place in doublets and editions of the National Academy of Sciences. The library received books in various languages from all over the world. The list of institutions with which the exchange took place is regularly submitted by “Chronicle of NTSH”.There was an active exchange with Slavic scientific academies (Serbian, Yugoslav, Bulgarian, Polish, Czech). Contacts were also established with second-hand and antique shops both in Ukraine and abroad. The maximum use of all possible sources of collection of the Library of the National Academy of Sciences made it possible to create a book collection of such a level that we can talk about its uniqueness in Eastern Europe

Résumé :
The American minister Charles Monroe Sheldon published the “runaway bestseller” In His Steps “What Would Jesus Do?” in 1896. The initial, and stupendous, popularity of Sheldon’s social gospel novel has not yet been scrutinised in relation to its historical antecedents. By 1899 the weekly Outlook remarked on the transatlantic cross-over of the book, stating: “wherever one went in London, whether on trains or buses, in bookstores or shops, [one] found people talking about In His Steps.” In that same year W. T. Stead reissued his non-fiction book If Christ Came to Chicago, which had first been published in Chicago in 1894, two years before Sheldon’s sermon-story. The 1899 title page declared: “The Precursor of ‘In His Steps’/ If Christ came to Chicago!... /What Would Jesus Do?” Stead’s non-fiction book sold well on both sides of the Atlantic, before and after Sheldon’s novel was published. So, was this simply a marketing stunt designed to attract more readers? Or did Stead’s new title register deeper concerns about the relationship between fiction, journalism, and the social gospel movement? Investigating the somewhat vexed relationship between these two texts, this article traces the transatlantic roots of In His Steps. Comparing the afterlife of the novel with its immediate non-fiction ancestor, I explore the synergetic, if at times uncomfortable, relationship that developed between the social gospel movement and the periodical press at the end of the nineteenth century.

Résumé :
The ongoing digitization of our literary heritage, together with growing competition between publishing houses has led to a situation where the retranslations of works considered canonical have changed their form of extending from diachronic, linear development in time to a synchronic “explosion” of parallel texts, whose task is to win over readers/consumers with their individual novelty, distinctiveness and “inventiveness.” In fact, such translations gain a new function – they become a marketing tool for publishing houses. In my opinion the newest retranslations of Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita is one of the most interesting examples of the process described above. In recent years, new Polish versions of this novel have been published at a dizzying pace (five new translations between 2015 and 2018) and in overwhelming numbers (five editions were published in four different translations in 2018 alone). These new translations of Bulgakov’s novel have evoked a lively response from readers. All sorts of analysis, comparisons and opinions have been published not only in scholarly journals, but also in daily newspapers, internet forums and in comments on online bookstores. On the internet, professional translation criticism coexists with the personal opinions of internet users (often based on non-literary factors) and with marketing content, advertisements, and blurbs deliberately made to look like reviews. In this article I would like to discuss the new roles of professional translation criticism under the circumstances described above, analyse its presence on the internet and try to define its new objectives. On the one hand, its voice should be loud and clear enough to be heard within the virtual chaos of texts, whilst on the other hand it should be persuasive and lucid enough to assist readers with their decision-making regarding a particular translation and to perceive the literary value of texts hidden behind attractive covers of new editions.
