Résumé :
William Lane Craig has written an impressive apologetic book on the topic of the historical Adam, which like all his previous books, is comprehensive and thought-provoking. The biblical, theological, and scientific data presented in this book are enormous. The conclusions of his arguments can be easily understood through his own summaries at the end of each chapter, but to really deconstruct his arguments and critically evaluate the presented scientific data would be beyond the scope of a review article and my scientific expertise. There have been several book reviews written by other scholars on Craig’s book, but Craig has been disappointed by the fact that some of them have completely missed his point (and appear to have perhaps not read his book!) This is quite plausible given the density of information and syllogistic argumentation that are weaved in this book. His responses to these various flawed book reviews can be easily found online from a simple Google search. Before presenting my critiques, I feel it necessary to provide a brief overview of the book so that readers and Craig himself, if he reads this, can easily point out where I have misunderstood him, should that happen.

Résumé :
In the context of new times, new types of writing are created in order to meet the demands and wishes of the contemporary public. Printed books make no exception especially given that the reading of (especially printed) books has declined, despite variable statistics over the years. The book reading habits have thus decreased, so making printed books attractive to readers has been a matter of concern for contemporary writers like Adam Thirlwell, as illustrated in his novella Kapow! (2012). In line with the contemporary mind-set of revolutionizing the way in which narrative is presented and the technique in which it is composed, Thirlwell plays with readers’ conceptions and expectations about literary texts, producing a highly experimental work. Along with the montage/collage technique, which will be discussed in the present paper, such concepts as ergodicity, autofiction, metatextuality, paratextuality, metamodernism or altermodernism are central to a proper understanding of how Thirlwell’s novella works and represent highlights of the exploratory undertaking of this article. Keywords: ergodic literature; metamodernism; altermodernist fiction; contemporary autofiction; revolution of the text; intra-notes; collage/montage.

Résumé :
The book of Genesis is known as the book of origins. It’s often referred to as one of the five books of Moses or the Pentateuch. Scholars have written many articles and essays about the book of Genesis. While reading the book of Genesis, the researcher discovered some similarities or relationships between Adam and Eve’s fall and the story of the drunkenness of Noah. As will be seen in this study, this comparative study is crucial in understanding more about and the entire narrative of the Torah. This includes the story of the descendants of Shem and their conflict with the children of Ham. The purpose of this article, therefore, is to derive lessons from Noah’s drunkenness and Adam and Eves fall by closely looking into their similarities and differences.

Summers, Nicole M. « Adam or Aziz| Mothers' socialization of prosocial tendencies in 6- to 8-year olds during joint book reading ». Thesis, Saint Louis University, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10096626.

Texte intégral
Résumé :

Mothers’ socialization has been shown to impact prosocial tendencies in children. Discussions during joint book reading may provide a context to observe mothers’ strategies for evoking emotions. More specifically, mother-child talk about emotions, cognitive states, and inductive reasoning may enhance children’s perspective taking about characters experiencing diversity. However, mothers may differ in their amount and type of talk if the characters in the story are from an in-group or out-group. While not all mothers may engage in these strategies during book reading, evoking sympathy in children has been shown to predict children’s prosocial attitudes and behaviors toward others in need. The goal of this study was to explore mothers’ discourse strategies during a joint book reading task with first and second graders. Moreover, this study aimed to test whether reading and discussing a story about an in-group or out-group member differed and whether certain differences increased donating behavior and prosocial attitudes and from pre- to post-tests. In the main results, children’s donations did not significantly increase from pre-test to post-test as hypothesized nor did donations differ between the in-group or out-group story condition. However, children’s prosocial attitudes toward both in-group and out-group children improved equally from pre-test to post-test. Also as hypothesized, maternal discourse differed between story conditions. More specifically, there was an interaction between child gender and story condition where mothers with daughters used more emotion talk and cognitive state talk when discussing out-group members than did mothers with sons. Exploratory analyses revealed that mothers who used more emotion talk and inductive reasoning had children with lower prosocial attitudes when averaged across time of measurement toward both the in-group and out-group. Alternatively, children’s trait sympathy predicted higher average donations and prosocial attitudes. Finally, children’s civic identity scores predicted children’s average prosocial attitudes and maternal discourse variables (i.e., emotion words, cognitive state words, and number of inductive sequences). Future research should continue to investigate the relationship between children’s civic identity and maternal discourse, as this was the first study to explore the two. In conclusion, inducing sympathy in children may be an effective strategy for fostering more favorable attitudes toward other people in need regardless of their group identification. Additionally, individual child characteristics may predict children’s inclination to help others in need; however, aspects of mothers discourse may hinder such prosocial tendencies with children if they induce personal distress.

Résumé :
The colonists living in the new United States after the American War for Independence were faced with the problem of forming new identities once they could no longer recognize themselves, collectively or individually, as subjects of Great Britain. After the French Revolution American politicians began to weed out the more radical political elements of the newly formed United States, particularly by painting one of the revolution’s biggest defenders, Thomas Paine, as unworthy of the attention he received during the American War for Independence, and fear ran throughout the states that an anarchic revolution like the French Revolution could bring the downfall of the nation. State, local, and regional organizations sprang up to fight Jacobinism, the legendary secret group of murderers and anarchists that fought against the French government. This distressing situation gave rise to new literature that sought to describe the “real” origins and background of Jacobinism in the War in Heaven and in Eden, and a new movement against Jacobinism was established. Fears about the organization of secret societies did not wane in the decades after the French Revolution, but worsened in the last half of the 1820s when a Freemason, William Morgan, disappeared under mysterious circumstances in connection to an exposé of Masonry he had written. Most Americans assumed that Freemasons had abducted and murdered Morgan in order to keep their oaths and rites secret. One influential early American who was influenced by this socio-historical was Joseph Smith, Jr., the founding prophet of Mormonism. Smith interpreted the Eden narrative in light of the movement against secret societies, and literary motifs common to anti-Jacobin literature during the period provided language and interpretive strategies for understanding the Eden narrative that would influence how Smith produced his new scripture. Only a few months after the publication of the Book of Mormon Smith edited the version of Eden found there into the text of the Bible itself and made the biblical narrative conform to the version found in the Book of Mormon through his own revisions and additions.

The territory issue has always been present in the constitution of human societies; its apprehension and domain are bonded to the most several forms of power, including the ideological that has often been used as a way to justify the different forms of ownership, since its usage is through the mastery of a particular social group. In this sense, the importance of territory is presented in this research as a concept discussed in Geography textbooks for middle school author Melhem Adas, during the period from 1970 to 1990. To this purpose, the historical approach goes back to the nineteenth century (XIX) with the establishment of the emergence of Modern School in Europe, which a priori had the function to justify the founding of the nation-state from the established school knowledge in schools. Geography as school content played a key role to justify the sense of patriotic nationalism, so important to get the project of the national State in this period. The concept of territory was, thus, widely used to substantiate the nationalistic ideals and the textbook was the instrument used to ensure such goals. The political, economical and social changes that occurred during the Historical process redefined the relationship between society and territory and its conception has undergone several theoretical transformations, which were analyzed differently in a large range of science fileds, including Geography. The historical angle (selected part) chosen for this study took place because of the historical context in which it was written in the didactic work of the author mentioned above, in the case of Brazil, took the implantation of the military dictatorship and political opening, from the mid-1980, when also occur the paradigm shifts of the geographical science.

Muhanna, Elias Ibrahim. « Encyclopaedism in the Mamluk Period : The Composition of Shihāb al-Dīn al-Nuwayrī’s (D. 1333) Nihāyat al-Arab fī Funūn al-Adab ». Thesis, Harvard University, 2012. http://dissertations.umi.com/gsas.harvard:10276.

Résumé :
This dissertation explores the emergence of a golden age of Arabic encyclopaedic literature in the scholarly centers of Egypt and Syria during the Mamluk Empire (1250-1517). At the heart of the project is a study of Shihāb al-Dīn Aḥmad b. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Nuwayrī’s (d. 1333) Nihāyat al-arab fī funūn al-adab (‘The Ultimate Ambition in the Branches of Erudition’), a 31-volume encyclopaedic work composed at the beginning of the 14th century and divided into five parts: (i) heaven and earth; (ii) the human being; (iii) animals; (iv) plants; and (v) the history of the world. My study examines the formal arrangement, thematic contents, and codicological features of this seminal work, arguing that the rise of encyclopaedism in this period was emblematic of a certain intellectual ethos, a systematic approach to the classification of knowledge which emerged in the discursive context of a rapidly centralizing imperial state. I argue that the Nihāya grew out of an amalgam of several genres (including the adab anthology, the cosmographical compendium, the chancery scribe manual, the dynastic chronicle, and the commonplace book), developing into a new form and serving a different purpose from its literary predecessors. Such texts, long considered tokens of intellectual and cultural decadence, demonstrate the strategies used by Mamluk religious scholars, chancery scribes, and littérateurs to navigate an ever-growing corpus of accumulated knowledge

The present work studies the reception of the Bible by Jorge Luis Borges by means of the analysis of his complete work. It consists of three parts. The first one, merely contextual, outlines the literary fortune of the biblical imagery, a question that has occupied to the Anglo-Saxon criticism from the decade of 1980, and concisely attends to the way in which three important authors for Borges Dante, Milton and Blake used the Scriptures in their work. The second one attempts to specify, from the basis of certain biographical information, declarations and writings of Borges, the importance that the Biblical literature had for him and the way it influenced his own poetics. The third one analyzes the literary use of certain characters of the Scriptures by Borges; the analysis reveals that these characters personify in a paradigmatic way some of the central topics of his work, as knowledge, death, time or identity.

Résumé :
In the Slavic grammar books of the 16th-17th centuries, the category of dual was represented in the fi rst Slovenian grammar book «Arcticae horulae succisivae» (1584, Wit-tenberg) by the Protestant grammarian A. Bohorič (1520 –1588) and in the grammar book of the Church Slavonic lan-guage «Slavonic Grammar with Correct Syntax» (1619, Jevje) by M. Smotrytsky (1578–1633 (?)).It was assumed earlier that the Slovenian grammar had had a possible impact on Smotrytsky’s Grammar. However, the analysis of the dual forms in Bohorič’s G r a m m a r and Smotrytsky’s Grammar showed that such an impact was most likely impossible. When creating their gram-mar books, the authors were guided by different aims: if A. Bohorič was following the practice of using the forms of a living language, then Smotrytsky was orienting towards the fi xed stable forms of dead written language.

The historical works (books, fathnamehs and treaties), works of art (narratives, anthems), safarnamehs of the ambassadors of the European and Eastern countries and some other documents are the main sources of the Safavid period. “Tarih-e alam-arayi Abbasi”, “Ahsan-ut-tavarih”, “Khulasat ul-seyr”, “Qisse al-Khaqani, “Dasture Shahriya-ran”, “Kholdebarin and a number of some safarnamehs, including those of Pietro Della Valle, Adam Olearius, Chardin, Tavernier and Kampfer may be stated as the most reliable sources of the mentioned period. The author of one of the valuable sources “Kholde-barin” differs from the other authors by his special features. Mirza Muhammad ibn Yusuf Valeh Isfahani, the author of the work, wrote his work on the basis of “Habib as-Siyar”, “Ahsan-ut-tavarih” and “Tarih-e alam-arayi Abbasi”. Kholde Barin is one of the important historical books written in the period of the Safavids. This book was written in Persian. The book is the big historical book that describes the political and socio-economical condition of that period in details. The work consists of eight chapters and a conclusion. Keywords: Sheikh Safi, “Kholde-barin”, Muhammad Valeh Esfahani, the Azerbaijani Safavid State, Shah I Abbas.

Résumé :
The phenomenon that can be perceived in biblical texts is a specific structure of the relations between characters that basically has the form of “twins”. The “twins” are somehow set at the same distance from the third character, which can be graphically pictured as the top vertex of the triangular structure. However, this third character also has its own “twin”, but their relation is different than the relation between the aforementioned twins: the third and its “twin” somehow go together, yet they are somehow opposite to each other. For this reason, the twin of the third we named “doppelganger”: it is the shadow figure of the third, yet mostly having the different value from it (“positive” instead of “negative”). Usually at the coming of the doppelganger the third disappears from the story. In this paper we shall analyse this phenomenon in the Genesis, but using metodology of Data Science. Data collection was made by reading several translations of the Book of Genesis and recording the appearance of characters (Adam / Eve, Yahweh / Snake). Correlation between parameters was determined using Pearson's and Spearman's correlation coefficient, more precisely, the correlation matrix. After statistical data processing, a conceptual model was developed. Using System Theory, a computer model of this complex, closed system describing a “pattern of behavior” was developed. For the validation of the model, considering that the distributions are asymmetrical non-Gaussian distributions, a non-parametric tests were applied. A search of scientific papers did not find any work that deals with the research of the Book of Genesis as complex, closed system according System Theory, using Data Science methodology and Simulation modelling as a research method. This paper presents a developing knowledge-based model which contributes to philosophy of religion.

Résumé :
Acknowledging the Anthropocene crisis, my research examines myth and myth-making to reimagine the role of Claude Lévi-Strauss’ bricoleur concept. Following Joseph M. Coll’s Taoist and Buddhist systemic thinking inspired theory of sustainable transformation, the practice-led project evolves into the making of an essayist film that conveys a specific personal myth.My research reckons that a bricoleur should perceive myth-making as an organic growing organisation that acquires intuition and posteriori knowledge. And focus on a narrative that evolves into the mythic identity of a piece of coal and a bar-tailed godwit corresponding to designated oppositional values and semiotic assets. Apart from the practitioner works of Stan Brakhage, Chris Marker and Adam Curtis, my research also dives into Elysia Crampton Chuquimia, Howie Lee and Yaksha‘s musical languages to explore the other narrative possibilities when re-examining history in a socially conscious manner. As the film soundtrack is also part of the myth-making production. My practice-led project inevitably evolves into the subject of the self as the production presents a negotiation through metaphors and signifiers concerning memory, history and experience. The filmmaking echoes a search for the wisdom of self-acceptance. It adopts Stephen Yablo’s understanding of conceivability to generate and regenerate meaningful assets. Concepts are planted to grow into newer representations compromising posteriori knowledge and self-realisations, with informal syllogistic reasoning concerning the epistemological nature of imagination and the transformative structure of myth. The contextual knowledge of my research examines the subject of myth and myth-making through Jacques Lacan's theory of fantasy, Jungian analytical psychology and Claude Lévi-Strauss knowledge of structural linguistics. It adopts Lévi-Strauss’ canonical myth formula concerning the missing discussion of experience, community, and the wilder contexts of shamanology. Maurice Merleau-Ponty's phenomenological body and Martin Heidegger's thoughts on the philosophy of technology concerning the body-to-technology relation and the notion of symbolic light and darkness. With critics on the instrumentalist stance of technology and Rene Descartes's modal metaphysics concerning Arnold Gehlen’s conservative alert of mankind’s debased condition of modern existence, my research proposes that myth-making is a necessary altruistic form of social technology that can transform experience into wisdom. Acknowledging that will is the priority for behaviour change. The production examines the Dao of myth and myth-making as a specific technological answer to resolve David Attenborough's calling for a global transformation and collaboration in his book A Life of Our Planet. To further develop such a technology, my research seeks a systemic understanding of myth and myth-making. Therefore, my research hypothesis a wholistic and heuristic methodology, namely Daoist bricoleur. By experiencing a personal myth, I celebrate my Manchu and Chinese culture origin and the complexity of my upbringing. My research visits the endangered Manchu Ulabun storytelling tradition and reckons the film production rely on the structural establishment of critical mythic fragments founded on autobiography and social conventions. <div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The multi-functional mechanical arm equipped on engineering vehicle can achieve different functions by installing different mechanism devices through the interface at the end of the mechanical arm. It can achieve functions like engineering construction and road rescue. Mechanical arm systems often work in complex environments, which requires good reliability and safety of the boom system.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">When the mechanical boom is working, the pressure of each luffing cylinder is large, and the contact force and acceleration of each boom are complex, which requires a certain degree of verification and optimization before it can be put into production. In this paper, a virtual prototype of a vehicle mounted hydraulic mechanical arm with four booms is established. Through ADAMS, the dynamic analysis of mechanical arm under multiple working conditions is carried out, the movement parameter changes and the pressure changes of each luffing cylinder are analyzed. A multi working condition optimization scheme is proposed to parameterize the coordinates of each hinge point of the mechanical boom. Through sensitivity analysis, the parameters of articulation points that have great influence on the force of the boom system are obtained for optimal design, so as to minimize the maximum pressure of each cylinder and improve its working condition.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">The maximum pressure of each cylinder of the optimized mechanical arm is reduced by 20% - 50% compared with baseline, and the force curve becomes more gentle, eliminating the sudden change of pressure, which makes the dynamic characteristics of the mechanical arm significantly improved, makes its lightweight design more possible, shortens the deployment speed of its boom, and increases the working efficiency and reliability of the engineering vehicle, This provides a reference for the design of other kinds of mechanical arms.</div></div>

Résumé :
Automatic differentiation is a technique that allows one to easily calculate exact partial derivatives of complex, composite mathematical functions. This technique is described in a book by Rall1 of the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Independently, S. Marshall of Xerox Corp. developed an algorithm that is effectively automatic differentiation, and extends the technique to arbitrary order partial derivatives of functions of arbitrary number of independent variables. Since aberration coefficients are merely partial derivatives of final ray coordinates with respect to initial ray coordinates, automatic differentiation can be employed to calculate any aberration coefficient desired of any lens system, including misaligned and nonsymmetric ones. Partial derivatives of these systems for use in lens tolerancing and optimization can also be directly calculated. Examples of aberration calculation and Gaussian beam tolerancing, using an implementation of ray tracing and automatic differentiation in the ADA programming language, are given. The work of Forbes2 in the area of computation of chromatic aberration coefficients using an equivalent, highly optimized power series method, is also mentioned.

Résumé :
In his seminal book, Conceptual Blockbusting, James L. Adams states that an emotional block to creativity is the “inability to tolerate ambiguity . . . an overriding desire for order; and having no appetite for chaos.” Tolerance for ambiguity can be defined as the degree to which an individual is comfortable with uncertainty, unpredictability, conflicting directions, and multiple demands. Industrial designers work in ambiguous environments. Unfortunately, modern organizations are ordered around the principle of doing things that are efficient, repeatable, and reliable...the fundamental problem with trying to be creative is that it’s none of those things. Higher education is a modern organization that does not encourage students to develop a tolerance for ambiguity but strives to eliminate ambiguity from their educational experience. How one deals with uncertainty and the stress of an ambiguous situation is an important consideration in the life, education, and professional practice of industrial designers. An industrial design student with a low tolerance for ambiguity, who is seeking opportunities in the professional world, is bound to feel stress, anxiety, and frustration. This paper defines tolerance for ambiguity to create awareness of its influence on the success of students who are studying industrial design. Recognizing and developing opportunities for students to experience and practice ambiguous situations is important to student’s success as they move from the educational experience into professional life.

The relationship between the abundance of natural resources and socio-economic performance has been a main object of study in the economic development field since Adam Smith. Dominated by the verification of the so called curse of natural resource, the mainstream literature on the topic has been mostly on the study of cross sectional data at the national level, with limited empirical use of exogenous differences in the abundance of natural resources at the subnational level. We explore the case of Peru, a mining-rich middle income country where -exploiting a unique data set constructed for this purpose- we are able to assess systematic differences in district-level welfare outcomes between mining and non-mining districts. We find evidence that the condition of being mining-abundant district have a significant impact on the pace of reduction of poverty rates and inequality levels. We also estimate a heterogeneous response to the mining-abundant condition, finding stronger responses in lower-poverty, higher-inequality districts. Finally, we find a trend suggesting incremental positive marginal effects of the level of exposure to mining transfer, as proxy for the degree of abundance of mining activities, on the reduction of poverty and inequality.
