Review of the book: Stolyarov Yu. N. Rubakin regained / Yu. N. Stolyarov ; Association of Russian School Librarians ; Library Science Department of the International Informatization Academy ; Russian State Library ; Book Culture Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences ; National Library of Sakha Republic (Yakutia). – Moscow : RUSLA, 2019. – 416 p. [In Russian]In his new book, Yury N. Stolyarov reconstructs the biography of Nikolay [Nikolas] Aleksandrovich Rubakin, the author of over 280 books and 300 articles. The monograph is based on the series of papers by Stolyarov published in professional periodicals. The author includes Rubakin’s biography beginning with his birth in the town of Oranienbaum (now (Lomonosov, Leningradskaya oblast, Russia) till his last days in Switzerland. Yu. Stolyarov portrays a person who had to emigrate, though his all life was wholeheartedly devoted to Russia. The author investigates into archival materials, publications by the scholar, his personal correspondence, which enabled Stolyarov to demonstrate political, social and cultural impacts on Rubakin’s life and vectors of his studies. In his book, Stolyarov emphasizes the scholar’s great contribution to the study of problems in library science and bibliology, i. e. the role of libraries in self-education, promotion of science knowledge among population groups, collection development, book selection for children, reading theory, etc. Yu. Stolyarov also focuses on bibliopsychology — an independent discipline, developed by N. Rubakin and won the support of the library community. The findings of bibliopsychology has been being still used globally.

Résumé :
Introduction: The spread of false news related to nutrition shows the need to provide general public validated information on food and health, inducing them to follow healthy dietary habits. Objective: To assess whether attendance to book clubs devoted to scientific disseminations books is a useful strategy for improving nutritional knowledge among the population. Methodology: 65 adults participated in a reading club, attending a research center once a month for 4 months to talk about informative scientific books on food/nutrition. The knowledge of the participants was monitored through a survey performed in all the sessions of the club. Results: Participants were mostly female with university studies. Attendance to the book clubs caused a significant increase (P < 0.05) in the number of correct answers on a questionnaire about common misbeliefs on the topics covered in the discussed books. Participants showed a high degree of satisfaction with the activity and willingness to read more scientific dissemination books, even when most of them were not previously usual readers. Conclusions: Book clubs based on popular science books and led by scientists with expertise in the field could increase nutritional knowledge among general population, which should be further explored in different socioeconomic contexts.

Résumé :
In his review of the Estonian translation of Richard Sennett’s The Craftsman, Urmas Lüüs, from the Estonian Art Academy, expresses his thoughts about the general position of ’material arts’ in the context of Estonian higher art education and the ways the book could help to cast new light on the forms of artistic self-expression that embrace making and skill besides conceptual ideas and design. In addition to materiality and technical skills, tacit knowledge is another very important concept addressed by Sennett. Lüüs provides some contemporary examples where tacit knowledge is studied. Some attempts to re-evoke tacit knowledge may not be successful, because they have been passed literally from hand to hand, but the knowledge has perished alongside the growth of industrial production, much like it happened in metal casting for sculptures. Lüüs points out that the book nicely pairs up with Jyrki Siukonen’s book Hammer and silence that was translated and published some years earlier and enjoyed very positive reception on behalf of art students. Both books show the way towards accepting the significance of (manual) skills in all types of creative activity.

Résumé :
Abstract This paper first surveys the structure, content and purpose of al-Āmidī’s al-Muwāzana, the largest work of poetic criticism of the fourth/tenth century, then its medieval reception, which grants it quasi-encyclopaedic authority. Modern reception has often dehistoricized it by viewing it only as criticism, but book studies suggest broader contexts of interpretation. Looser than “encyclopaedia,” the notion of the “big book,” like those by al-Āmidī’s contemporaries and neighbours Abū l-Faraj al-Iṣfahānī and al-Tanūkhī, fits well with al-Muwāzana. The chronology of al-Āmidī’s life, and the idea of his “big book” as a highly personal work of lifelong scholarship, endorse M.Z. Sallām’s reading of al-Muwāzana as an intellectual ego-document. Finally, the citation practices of fourth/tenth-century “big books” anticipate aspects of the “archival” outlook of Mamluk scholarship and suggest how the “big books” discussed here sought to validate their own versions of cultural memory.

Résumé :
The editorial goals of the Journal of Marketing are (1) to advance the science and practice of marketing and (2) to serve as a bridge between the scholarly and the practical realms, each of which has a vital stake in what is happening on the other side. The main vehicle upon which the Journal of Marketing relies for achieving these goals is the publication of full-length articles that are grounded in scholarly research. However, two other sections of the Journal, the Literature Review and the Book Reviews, also play a vital role in fulfilling its editorial goals. The former section informs JM readers about developments that have appeared in related journals, whereas the latter focuses on providing critical reviews of influential books. The following editorial (1) reviews the role of books and book reviews in the knowledge dissemination process, (2) details the role of the Book Reviews, and (3) offers some guidelines for book reviewers.

Résumé :
Purpose The paper aims to understand the book subscription characteristics of the students at each college and help the library administrators to conduct efficient library management plans for books in the library. Unlike the traditional association rule mining (ARM) techniques which mine patterns from a single data set, this paper proposes a model, recency-frequency-college (RFC) model, to analyse book subscription characteristics of library users and then discovers interesting association rules from equivalence-class RFC segments. Design/methodology/approach A framework which integrates the RFC model and ARM technique is proposed to analyse book subscription characteristics of library users. First, the author applies the RFC model to determine library users’ RFC values. After that, the author clusters library users’ transactions into several RFC segments by their RFC values. Finally, the author discovers RFC association rules and analyses book subscription characteristics of RFC segments (library users). Findings The paper provides experimental results from the survey data. It shows that the precision of the frequent itemsets discovered by the proposed RFC model outperforms the traditional approach in predicting library user subscription itemsets in the following time periods. Besides, the proposed approach can discover interesting and valuable patterns from library book circulation transactions. Research limitations/implications Because RFC thresholds were assigned based on expert opinion in this paper, it is an acquisition bottleneck. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to automatically infer the RFC thresholds from the library book circulation transactions. Practical implications The paper includes implications for the library administrators in conducting library book management plans for different library users. Originality/value This paper proposes a model, the RFC model, to analyse book subscription characteristics of library users.

This research paper examines the shifting role of the Encyclopaedia Britannica as a politicised, Western, gendered (male) account of history. This paper considers the encyclopaedia’s problematic status as a “holy” book or monument to human achievement, and explores destructive abstraction as a method by which this status can be challenged. The paper outlines the conceptual and practical development of my creative work in three distinct chapters. Chapter one explores the shifting role the encyclopaedia has played within culture, as well as the various ways it has been interrogated and challenged in contemporary art practice, with a particular focus on the work of Simryn Gill, Idris Khan, and John Latham. Chapter two examines works by Ann Hamilton, On Kawara, and Titarubi to explore the function reading serves in society and religious practices. Chapter three explores the act of destruction as a form of abstraction in the work of Ann Hamilton, Michelle Nikou, and Simryn Gill.

Résumé :
The aim of this literature review is to investigate what previous research indicates about how students’ reading development is influenced when reading ordinary books or e-books, but also how their attitudes towards reading are influenced. I will also use Henk Linskens’s (2018) work Henke och Bokstäverna som Hoppar to exemplify my perspective on the results from the research. The result of all the research gathered indicates that there are no significant differences in reading development among students using e-books or traditional books. It appears to be slightly better to use traditional books to promote reading comprehension, while e-books seem to promote students’ word knowledge slightly better. In order to achieve a good result in both cases, a more knowledgeable adult is needed to support the student, which follows Vygotsky's socio-cultural perspective. When it comes to students’ attitudes towards reading, e-books create positive attitudes towards reading in general, which could be due to their many opportunities for individualization. However, there are big differences between boys and girls in the matter, where boys benefit from using e-books while reading and girls benefit from using traditional books.

The initial research questions for this practice-based doctoral research project was to ask, "Is it possible to develop a more confident, self-conscious creative voice able to articulate one's identity more clearly through the making of handmade artefacts?"; this thesis applies the methodologies of autoethnography and pedagogy to consider an answer. My original contribution to knowledge through this enquiry is the identification of the ways in which the exploration of identity through autoethnographic, creative and pedagogic methods encourages an expanded field of self-knowledge, self-confidence and sense of creative self.

Résumé :
This thesis explores the potential futures of the scholarly monograph in an increasingly digital environment. By positioning the medium of the book as a major site of struggle over the future of scholarly knowledge production within the humanities, this thesis argues for the importance of experimenting with alternative ways of thinking and performing the academic monograph. In particular, it argues for the importance of experiments that go beyond simply iteratively reproducing established print practices of knowledge production, dissemination and consumption. This is especially important when the present print-based arrangements tend to sustain the interest of established stakeholders, inhibiting wider access to scholarly research and experimentation with new forms of scholarship and scholarly communication. This thesis will examine some of the forms a politics of the book based on openness, remix and liquidity might take. It will draw on some recent experiments in scholarly book publishing—from liquid and living books to anonymous authorship and radical open access—that try to challenge and rethink the book as a fixed and stable commercial object, as well as the political economy and scholarly practices surrounding it. These experiments do so by cutting the book together and apart differently and by exploring experimentation as a specific discourse and practice of critique.

Résumé :
Annotation: „Tabula rasa” – the theory of the philosopher John Loke represents the man without a book. The importance of the book in the formation of personality is demonstrated by the countless prohibitions of books throughout human history – „blacklists” of forbidden books and burned books. Hence the rhetorical question: – „What is your first book?”, „What books were in your training?”. The book is the source of knowledge that can be passed on to other generations contributing to their formation. Good governance can only be achieved based on qualitative knowledge. The need for elite education has been realized since antiquity. Thus in all societies, the formula of creating special schools for the children of kings and aristocrats was used. The Party High School was created in the Soviet Union for Party Officials because good governance equals the higher level of idealization of the official. Cultural and scientific elites have a role in defending national culture and merit in universal science. The book is an artifact in the demonstration of the existence of a people, and the people who will not have written books will remain out of history.

Résumé :
Analyzing the success of books is a matter of interest among publishers, professional book reviewers, expert writers, and even curious readers. Such a task has many influencing factors concerning the intrinsic content and quality of the book (e.g., interest, novelty, writing style, and engaging plot) and others regarding external factors such as social context, author relationships, and luck for publication. Faced with so many variables, recognizing a successful literary work is a challenging endeavor even for specialists in the publishing market. Our objective is: to explore a dataset of books in the Portuguese language created to obtain more knowledge about the different variables of success in the literary context; to understand and evaluate the metrics collected that indicate new perceptions about books using graphical views.

Résumé :
The authors of this paper deal with the pedagogical and philological significance of Sava’s Spelling Book printed in Russia (Moscow) in 1692, in the Russian-Slavonic language. This spelling book is about 100 years younger than the First Serbian Spelling Book (The Spelling Book of Sava Inok of the monastery Dečani). This spelling book of the Russian recension reached all the way to the Serbian lands, being, on one hand, the precedent, and on the other hand, the follower to the books that are to appear in Serbia and its new literary language. The authors of this paper explain in a detailed way the method of letter teaching by which each letter (Slavonic, Greek, and Latin) is being assigned a corresponding picture. This points out to the pedagogical approach to the acquisition of new knowledge (the basics of reading and writing) which uses pictures of animals and plants in order to facilitate the process of letter learning. In his lecture, KarionIstomin, the author of the spelling book, suggested totally new teaching methods i.e. the new methods. Namely, Sava’s Spelling book is the precursor of contemporary spelling books, since all of them use the connection between letters and pictures as the basis of their teaching method.

Résumé :
This paper aims to fill the gap in major Islamic topics by developing an ontology for the Book of Purification in Islam. Many trusted books start with the Book of Purification as it is the key to prayer (Second Pillar after Shahadah, the profession of faith) and required in Islamic duties like performing Umrah and Hajj. The strategy for developing the ontology included six steps: (1) domain identification, (2) knowledge acquisition, (3) conceptualization, (4) classification, (5) integration and implementation, and (6) ontology generation. Examples of the built tables and classifications are included in this paper. Focus in this paper is given to the design and analysis phases where the technical implementing of the proposed ontology is not within this paper’s objectives. Though, we presented an initial implementation to illustrate the steps of our strategy. We make sure that this ontology or knowledge representation on the Book of Purification in Islam satisfy reusability, where the main attributes, concepts, and their relationships are defined and encoded. This formal encoding will be available for sharing and reusing.

Résumé :
The main criterion for the competitiveness of a teacher or expert in the field of science is a good ability to present their knowledge to students in an interactive form without spending a lot of time in preparation. The purpose of the study is to analyze modern editors to create educational information content in the modern educational space and to present a modern tool for creating web books based on the latest IT technologies. Modern editors of web material creation have been analyzed, statistics of situations on mastering of knowledge by listeners, using interactive methods of information submission have been investigated. Using the WYSIWYG concept and analyzing modern information tools for presenting graphic material, an effective tool for teaching interactive web material was presented. An adapted version of the MarkHub online editor based on cloud technologies is presented. Using MarkHub cloud-based online editor for the unified development of educational content can significantly increase the author’s productivity in the content creation process. At the same time, the effects of reducing the time spent on formatting the external presentation of the content, making synchronous changes to different versions of the content, tracking the versions of the content, organizing remote teamwork in the network environment are achieved.

Pitt, Jordan A., Neelakanteswar Aluru et Hahn Hahn. Supplemental materials for book chapter : Microplastics in Marine Food Webs. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, décembre 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1575/1912/29556.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The identification of microplastics (MPs; 1 µm - 5 mm) and the inferred presence of nanoplastics (NPs; <1 µm) in a wide variety of marine animals, including many seafood species, has raised important questions about the presence, movement, and impacts of these particles in marine food webs. Understanding microplastic dynamics in marine food webs requires elucidation of the processes involved, including bioaccumulation, trophic transfer, and biomagnification. However, in the context of microplastics and nanoplastics these concepts are often misunderstood. In this chapter, we provide a critical review of the literature on the behavior of plastic particles in marine food webs. We find clear evidence of trophic transfer, equivocal evidence for bioaccumulation, and no evidence for biomagnification. We also identify a number of knowledge gaps that limit our ability to draw firm conclusions at this time. These supplemental documents are in support of an invited chapter to be published in this book: S.E. Shumway and J.E. Ward (Eds.) Plastics in the Sea: Occurrence and Impacts (Elsevier 2023).

Résumé :
This publication is the third product of the Erasmus + Project entitled Voices of Immigrant Women (Project Number: 2020-1-ES01-KA203-082364). This product is based on a set of policy recommendations that provides practical guidance on intervention proposals to those with political responsibilities in governance on migration management and policies for integration and social inclusion, as well as to policy makers in the governance of training in Higher Education (University) at all levels. This is intended to promote the development of practical strategies that allow overcoming the obstacles encountered by migrant women during the integration process, favoring the construction of institutions, administrations and, ultimately, more inclusive societies. The content presented in this book proposes recommendations and intervention proposals oriented to practice to: - Improve Higher Education study plans by promoting the training of students as future active protagonists who are aware of social interventions. This will promote equity, diversity and the integration of migrant women. - Strengthen cooperation and creation of networks between academic organizations, the third sector and public administrations that are responsible for promoting the integration and inclusion of migrant women. - Promote dialogue and the exchange of knowledge to, firstly, raise awareness of human mobility and gender in Europe and, secondly, promote the participation and social, labor and civic integration of the migrant population. All this is developed through 4 areas in which this book is articulated. The first area entitled "Migrant women needs and successful integration interventions"; the second area entitled "Promoting University students awareness and civic and social responsibility towards migrant women integration"; the third area entitled "Cooperation between Higher Education institutions and third sector"; the fourth and last area, entitled "Inclusive Higher Education".
